and neighbor alike because she was born and raised in this wonderful gem of a town. Growing up around thousands of tourists instilled in her at a very young age the importance of hospitality and customer service. Like most, Kathy worked while attending school and college. The importance of working hard to achieve her goals became second nature to her. Kathy has a fierce drive and competitive nature that leads her to provide unmatched customer service. Her interest in real estate began about 15 years ago, when she and her husband purchased their first investment property in the town they love so much. Her passion for real estate grew as their portfolio grew and she knew she wanted to share her wealth of knowledge with others. When not sharing her passion for the Cape May area, Kathy can frequently be found around town with her husband Mike and their adventurous children. Their family’s love for aviation drew her to volunteer at the local NSAW Aviation Museum, “It’s important for us to give back to a community that has given us so much support.” When not juggling her children between school and sporting events, Kathy and her family enjoy paddling the waterways of her beautiful hometown and soaking up the sun while taking in the nature that surrounds them every day.

Everything you wanted to know about Cape May’s peppy periodical... and then some FREQUENTLY ASKED Qs What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? We are in the process of planning Exit Zero Filling Station, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It will be a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! The leases on our old building expired so, while the new HQ is being built, we are producing this magazine from a secret location on the island. When will the new place be open? Late spring — that’s as precise as we can get right now. What if I need to visit you in person? We should be able to take care of your requirements by phone and/or email, but if you REALLY need to make a visit, call us first on 609-770-8479. If you don’t have a shop, how do I buy a Discount Deck or EZ merchandise? You can buy the Discount Deck either by calling the above number and paying by credit card or by visiting our online store at ezstore.us. For now, there is a limited amount of stock in our online store — a few selections of T-shirts and hoodies, mostly. I used to stop by the store for my copy of the magazine. Where do I go now? We deliver all over the island, and as far as Rio Grande. Closest spots to our old office include Sunset Liquors, CVS, West End Garage and Cappelletti’s. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). Please note that you can still subscribe to the color issues — $25 for three issues. Call 609-770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us. Do April showers really bring May flowers? Yes and no. They do feed the plants, but too much rain (several days worth) can pool on top of soil and damage what’s underneath. In other words — for the love of god and daffodils — bring on the sun, please.

Utsch’s Marina was founded 60 years ago, when Ernest Utsch Sr made the move from the candy business in Philadelphia to the boat business here. He started out with 14 slips; now there are more than 300. Now on its third generation of management, Utsch’s is a floating campground for folks who want to vacation on their boats — Walter Cronkite docked here. Utsch’s is also home for several businesses, including East Coast Parasail, Hell Yeah Watersports and Steger Stand-up Paddleboard.

Ramblings From The Editor
T
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
he Exit Zero crew hit three of Cape May’s top spots for Easter brunch over the weekend — Aleathea’s, Beach Plum Farm, Washington Inn — and reported back that each meal was delightful and that each place was packed with customers (not including all the brand-new stuffed bunnies the under-fourfoot set had in tow). Another sign that spring is here — despite this string of unspring-like weather — is a recent call for volunteers from the ReTURN the Favor program, which will celebrate its sixth year this season. ReTURN the Favor, managed by The Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor as well as the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network, is a campaign to save the vulnerable horseshoe crab. More than 400 million years old, this gentle prehistoric creature may look a little scary (a hard outer shell, many-clawed underbelly and swordlike tail will do that), but the truly scary thing is imagining life without these prehistoric little critters. We depend on the blue blood of this animal — overharvested as bait for
conch fishermen — for the testing of intravenous drugs for bacterial contamination. If you’ve ever had a hospital stay, there’s a good chance you owe your life to a horseshoe — no exaggeration. Shorebirds rely on them, too, by fueling up on their tiny eggs in order to survive epic migrations. The Delaware Bay is ground zero for horseshoe mating — as many as 1.3 million come onto New Jersey’s bay beaches in May and June. Only problem is, wave action often turns these endearing arthropods upside
down as they’re making their way onshore for a group whoopie session, and they have trouble righting themselves. It’s not unusual on Higbee Beach to see hundreds of them stranded at the tideline with their tails in the air as if to say: “A little help, please.” Enter ReTURN the Favor, whose volunteers do just that: turn the animals right-side-up again before they become seagull brunch. I haven’t counted how many I’ve tipped over in the 15 years I’ve been walking Higbee Beach, but I CAN say that in five years, more than a quarter million horseshoes have been rescued by this program, with more than 131,000 of them saved in 2017. Compare that to ReTURN’s first year, which rescued a meager (by comparison) 4,597 crabs. The campaign also collects horseshoe crab data so that we’re better equipped to strategize conservation plans. If being a hero is a goal of yours, consider reaching out to the Wetlands Institute for more info on how to keep this program viable. To join a rescue walk, visit returnthefavor.org.

Bartender Of The Week Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week Billy Scott from The Rusty Nail is up. How long have you been bartending? Four years. Favorite drink to make? A gin and tonic. Finally an honest answer! What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer waves me down, then turns around to ask his/her party what they want to drink. Don’t act ready when you’re not ready! Biggest tip you ever received? $200. Just for being awesome.
BEER OF THE WEEK
WINE OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co Honey Porter - ABV: 5.4% Roasted and dark crystal malts shine through in a smooth and light-bodied porter that is balanced by a hint of sweetness thanks to the local Jersey Fresh honey. Welcome to the Garden State, bro. Apiology is the bee’s knees!
Collier’s Liquor Store Annabella California Red Blend - $22.00 Comprised mostly of Cabernet and Merlot. This wine is full bodied enough for the Napa Cab drinker yet refined enough with cool black fruit flavor for the casual red enthusiast. Enjoy with red meat dishes. Cheers!
Produce Report Ever wonder what the best time is to eat corn or a tomato? Each week, get an update on what food is in season in Cape May. So far, it’s been a pretty slow start for produce in our area due to the cold temps. However, asparagus season is around the corner. Did you know that everyone makes “asparagus pee,” but not everyone can smell it? Pee-yew!

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about) and who spat their drink from laughing too hard. (Or who didn’t get the joke — womp, womp.) The place: Bella Vida. There’s a holy vibe to this spot, and not just because you’ll leave here saying: “Holy cow, that meal was good.” Your favorite Bible verses are scattered like Easter eggs throughout the restaurant, with pops of surf decor on the walls. The table: Under the glass top, for our reading pleasure, were two messages from former customers — one, a few lines on the goodness of god. The other, a note from little-known superhero Uranium Man. “I parked my small spaceship in your lot,” it read. “I’m now refreshed and shall continue on my voyage to your sun. No worries, I’ll travel at night. Xoxo, Uranium Man.” A decent Yelp review, if we’ve ever heard one. The server: Christina, who was attentive, knowledgeable, patient and also the illustrator of an adorable giraffe doodle on our check. Diane, the designated leaver of doodles on white boards and other surfaces around our office, felt salty because it was objectively better than her signature piece, which is the butt of an elephant. We wonder if Christina always draws giraffes, or whether she sometimes switches it up. The drinks: The beverage stars were a freshly pressed carrot juice for Jack (“I’m always happily surprised by how sweet it is!” he said), and a mango-orange juice for Mike. It was delicious, but came with what Jack calls “an evil, plastic straw.” The food: A fish burrito for Katie, an ABLT for Mike (“A” is for “avocado”), a Costa Rica-inspired tico burrito for Jack and a buffalo chicken salad for Diane with blue cheese dressing. All were a good fit for people (and intergalactic travelers) who prefer fresh ingredients. The discussion: Would “I was slightly hungover” make a good title for Katie’s memoir? (Probably.) Did Mike accidentally go to Easter brunch at Aleathea’s with sticks in his hair and leaf-blower dust on his face, after a long stint of yard work? (Yes.) Does everyone secretly consider cake the driest and least exciting of celebratory desserts? (The world may never know.)

Doughnut Ambush Of The Week
Every week, we hit some lucky people up with a warm bucket of doughnuts from RSK! We are always looking for ways to bring good cheer and happiness to the streets of Cape May — hence our latest pay-it-forward ploy... the Doughnut Ambush! Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winner is Chuck Reese from Wildwood Crest, assistant manager at Kohr Bros on Washington Street Mall. So who would he most like to share this bucket with? Elvis. The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
slipped on ice this week. It was not intentional, though you know I do adore slapstick comedy. I think I inherited that from the late and occasionally lamented Ma D’Catur, who was never happier than when watching someone hurt themselves in comedic fashion. She would, if such delights were not occurring often enough for her tastes, engineer then: she had a range of props, from the “Free candy: help yourself, neighbor!” sign and an open box that contained laxative chocolate (there was a public lavatory at the end of the block in these days, funded by Ma herself: she was not interested in poor souls soiling their breeks so much as the sport of seeing them cross their eyes and legs, then hobble at top speed towards the loo. Of course the door was locked, but that was not apparent until they tried the handle), to the spring-loaded sections of sidewalk that would propel the unwary pedestrian a block into the ocean, or sometimes just a block straight up in the air and then down again. Such obvious cruelty is not to my tastes: I prefer the butt of my pranks to be able to limp
away, ideally with most digits still attached. I have on occasion smeared the pavement with powerful adhesive so that, over the course of four steps, a wandering Shoebie might go from sneakered (white, and large) to socks (white, often with cartoon characters inexpertly woven in) to barefoot, with a look pf puzzlement on their faces. Anyways, I would have laughed at my own fall had I not been busy slipping up in the air with such speed that my rather lovely brogues flew off, and I performed a perfect
360-degree flip, landing on my feet. I wish there had been an audience, other than Young Albert, whose opinion and approval matter to me, but is of little further benefit given he can’t speak in order to tell anyone. He did bark, though, and that conveyed a mix of amusement, mild concern, the beginning of an idea that he might eat me should the fall prove fatal and, finally, some awe. The episode did remind me that our official Cape May Jape season is about to start. The aim is to provide hilarity at the expense of out-of-towners, and we are taking suggestions as to how best spend the Japery Fund of $30,000. Front runner is the plan to instal a car-crushing machine on Beach that will seize and reshape random passing vehicles into cubes no larger than three feet. The funny part will be that the occupants will be inside, unharmed, but able to honk the horn and turn on the wipers and such, to the great hilarity of people watching. Admittedly, early testing on the outskirts of Wildwood has resulted in fewer laughs and more horrified shrieking than hoped for, but we will persevere!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, wine-pairing dinners
he snow has melted, at last, and the world is yawning, stretching and waking up. The birds and buds are back. The sun shines again. We appreciate everything a little more in the springtime — including food. Seasonal favorites like new potatoes, artichokes and beets are the best they will be all year. Less common treats like fiddlehead ferns invite you to expand your repertoire. Give your tastebuds a spring awakening with a wine-tasting dinner. Don’t wait for an excuse to host a dinner party. Your friends are eager to shake off their winter isolation. They will happily overlook your ongoing home improvement project and your unsociable dog — plus candlelight makes every home look better. Host a party just because the asparagus looks really good in the supermarket. Maybe you want to explore the latest trends in wine —they say sherry is making a comeback, and the United Kingdom is producing its finest wines in years. Are you intrigued by canned wines, or does that make you think of a high school party in the woods?
You can have a silly theme, like wines with animals in their name — cats and butterflies dominate the shelves — or colors, or even expletives — a surprisingly large category. Consider a Cape May theme — raise your salt game with some Cape May Sea Salt. Use Cape May Olive Oil for your salad dressing. Cape May Peanut Butter can find a place on your dessert table. Serve wines from a Cape May winery, or ask for recommendations at The Wine Cellar at Harry’s, Collier’s Liquors or Sunset Liquors. Pick up scone mix and cof-

fee at Love the Cook to treat your overnight guests to breakfast the next day. You don’t have to be an expert chef to plan a delightful dinner. Your appetizer can be as simple as a nut tray or cheese plate. Experts suggest planning to serve wine from lightest to darkest. Perhaps serve a sparkling wine with an appetizer, a white wine with your soup, a light red with the meat course and a port with dessert, for example. For your non-drinking guests, ask before serving non-alcoholic wines. Because these include some alcohol, they are great for calorie counters, not so great for alcoholics. Consider fancy iced tea or cinnamon water, or some trendy fermented soda. Or, let a chef treat you. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts presents a wine-pairing dinner, on April 27 at 7:30. The chef at the Mad Batter will prepare seafood risotto, onion soup, salad with pears and pomegranates and grapes, pork tenderloin, and red velvet cake — along with the proper accompanying wine. Tickets are $75, including tax and gratuity. Call 609-884-5404 or visit capemaymac.org.
Our 2018-2019 COOL CAPE MAY book will be on sale in May. It’s $25 for nearly 400 pages. In full color! Pre-order today and we will ship it to you for FREE! Buy at ezstore.us.

By Veronica Scutaro, President of Cape May Film Society
T
his weekend you have a chance to be part of something big — and unique here in South Jersey! The 18th Annual Cape May Film Festival starts this Friday, April 6 and goes until Sunday. Our festival is the only place you can find incredible indie films in a town that prides itself on wonderful visual and performing arts. Cape May has the best theater, the best music, and outstanding artists. And thanks to the Cape May Film Festival, marvelous movies. When it comes to screening independent film, we’re the only game in town — and one of the only and certainly the longest running festival in South Jersey. And we’re the pride of the Garden State as well. Remember we were the first film festival to win the statewide people’s choice award since they began 10 years ago — and we held the honor for three straight years before our friends in Montclair took over. We’ve been at this a long time, and we bring to town the most thought-provoking, insightful films being produced today. You
would have to travel at least an hour away to find a theater that plays these amazing films. And if you got there, you’d miss talking with the producers, actors, directors or writers. We have always been the premiere venue for filmmakers to show their work and get feedback from the audience. Be one of those in the audience this year! On Friday night, we’re showing one of the more important and beautiful environmental films about coral reefs. On Saturday night, we’re hosting the producer of the remarkable film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And all weekend, interact with the filmmakers who are making these cool films.
And talk about touching the future... we are featuring young students on Saturday morning. Then late Saturday afternoon we’re screening award-winning movies from the Temple University graduate film program. These could be tomorrow’s Spielberg or Scorsese! In between, we are featuring our curator’s picks from dozens of films submitted this year. Stick around Sunday for more films and a chance to get together and talk with other film lovers and the people who make the movies happen! You won’t want to miss this weekend’s superb lineup! These are films that you and your loved ones will talk about for years! And plan to join us all year round for great programming as a member of the Cape May Film Society. We look forward to this weekend to help fund other workshops and presentations for the rest of the year. Join us tomorrow night at the West Cape May Borough Hall, 732 Broadway or visit www. newnjstatefilmfestival.com. Come early to save yourself an aisle seat!

T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My girlfriend and I moved in together after dating for four years. We now find ourselves with duplicates of things — we have three cars, for example. We have two beds, two sofas — you get the idea. My problem is that no matter what the duplication, I’m the one who has to give up my possessions. My La-Z-Boy. I love that chair. She wants me to give MY car to HER son. What if we break up? I could be left without wheels or a bed to sleep in. Should I cave? I fear there will be no living with her if I don’t. — Identity Thief Victim Dear Victim Why did you move in together? You must choose to either continue to play the role of victim or stand up for yourself. If your girlfriend wants to give her son a car, let her give him her car — she has two. And if this
Wise answers to perplexing questions
proves to be a dealbreaker for her, you must question the wisdom of continuing down this one-way road. The other things are duplications which can be donated to Family Promise. As to the La-Z-Boy, I am in total sympathy with your girlfriend. However, you need to treat yourself to an afternoon at Cape May Brewery and think about whether you want to spend your days in captivity or in freedom Dear Answer Lady My fiancée likes to play the slots — a
lot. So much so she is going to Las Vegas for Cinco de Mayo with her girlfriends. She often goes to Atlantic City and I am usually included, but I’m wondering why I’m not invited to this upcoming jaunt. It’s true I don’t gamble but why wouldn’t she want me to come? — Left Out Dear Left Out The Answer Lady suspects your fiancée has a gambling Jones and since you do not share that zeal, she’d rather be around those who do. Or she doesn’t want you to know how much she loses at any given gambling escapade to get those perks. While she’s away, take the opportunity to take stock of the relationship. Gambling can be an addiction like any other and could jeopardize your financial stability if you combine your resources once you are married. The Answer Lady’s advice is — if you do seal the deal — keep your finances separate from hers. A visit to Cape May Day Spa is in order to get your Zen in line. They have spring specials and The Answer Lady suggests the Ocean Renewal package is just what you need.

Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
t’s called bird “watching,” but much of the gratification that comes from identifying birds is rooted in identifying bird calling. You, too, probably wish you were better attuned to bird vocalizations. Well, why not set your mind to it. Getting better is a matter of practice and resolve. You’ll discover that the more birds calls you recognize, the easier it becomes to learn the next one. Take pine warbler. The rich warble is superficially similar to the trill of dark-eyed junco but less brittle sounding. Worm-eating warbler and chipping sparrows also trill, but neither is here yet. Their arrival is still some weeks away. The oo-eek squeal of wood duck is idiosyncratic but you need to hear it to commit the sound to memory. Laughing Gull? You must be kidding me. The birds arrive with their mouths wide open. To live in Cape May is to know the calls of laughing gull. Other gulls are more challenging. Herrings emit a keening cry. The call of great black-backed is similar but lower pitched and more gruff. Ring-billed’s cry is squealing.
Don’t tell me you can’t do this. If you can identify the two-noted honk of Canada Goose, you can do all the rest. And if you, like me, have a hearing deficiency, just get closer. The audio frontier. It confers greater intimacy with the natural world than sight alone. Consider, by relying upon eyes alone, all the birds behind your back go undetected. When the sun goes down, your bird study is over for the day. But if you augment your visual skills with better tuned ears, you’ll double your birding hours and locate more
birds for your eyes to feast upon. Yes, there are CDs you can buy and online services that help sort out the world of bird sound, but nothing beats hearing and seeing birds in real time. Step 1: Train yourself to listen. Step 2: Every time you hear an unfamiliar bird song, track the singer down. Step 3: Put the sound in a category for reference. Is it a “chip” or a “trill,” a “warble” or a “bleat?” Is the vocalization complex or simple, a single note or phrase repeated over and over, like the song of northern cardinal? Now is the time to start familiarizing yourself with bird sound. In Spring many male birds are singing rings around their territories and by starting early in the nesting season, you won’t be overwhelmed. After you amaze yourself with your newfound knowledge, you can amaze your non-birding friends, should you have any. And after you bore your non-birding friends to tears, All you’ll be left with is birding friends who will want you to help them decode the wonderful world of bird sound.

LUCKY is three years old and has been waiting at the shelter for over a year. She is very petite for her breed, but has a huge personality and tons of energy. Whether she is settling quietly in her kennel or showing off her favorite tricks, she loves meeting new people. Lucky is waiting for her very special someone to love forever. Adopt today!
LAYLA came to the shelter after living outside. As a result, she loves to interact with people at her own pace. Her previous owner had several children and said that Layla was comfortable with them. Layla has a soulful expression that begs for attention and care. She loves to romp in the yard and take long walks followed by cuddling. Adopt today!
SPARKLET is a sweet girl of about 3 years old whose life up until now has been terribly harsh. Although Sparklet’s teeth are ground down to nothing, her ears are chopped mercilessly short, and her leg is deformed due most likely to a bone fracture that never received medical attention, she is a happy survivor. Give this angel a second chance!
