Brother Joscephus Plays Cape May P14-20
Sweet! It’s Our Weekly Doughnut Ambush P24
It was a weekend of fiery, soulful, world-class music at the Exit Zero Jazz Festival. These photos were taken at the Schmidtchen Theater at Lower Cape May Regional High School during the Saturday performance of headliner and Grammy winner Marcus Miller — a composer for over 20 movies, including the Halle Berry classic Boomerang. But artists had crowds dancing at venues throughout town — Convention Hall, Carney’s, Cabanas, the Rusty Nail, Iron Pier, SeaSalt, Aleathea’s, and on Carpenters Lane. More coverage next week! What happened to the Exit Zero Store and Cookhouse? They both got eaten up by the Exit Zero Filling Station monster, a super-exciting project right across the road from our old place. It’s a gas station, convenience & merchandise store and restaurant! Oh, and it’s where our publishing office is, too. Just look for the big EXIT ZERO sign on the side of the building. Why are you no longer offering subscriptions? Too many people were either receiving their issues very late or, in some cases, not at all. That’s all down to the vagaries of sending by bulk mail, which was our only option, unless you want to pay $100 to get EZ delivered first-class (some people actually HAVE signed up). You can still subscribe to the color issues — $32.50 for four. Call 609770-8479 to order, or visit ezstore.us.

Lake Lily in Cape May Point, named for a preponderance of lily pads, was an important source of freshwater for the Kechemeche indians who resided on the Cape in the 1600s. Pirates, possibly even Captain Kidd, also came ashore here to drink from Lake Lily. During the War of 1812, locals contaminated the lake with saltwater in order to keep British soldiers from filling their casks. Today, it’s a serene place for birdwatching, cared for by the nonprofit Friends of Lake Lily.

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
eeling that post-jazz-festival glow? You’re not alone. As I type this, it’s Tuesday morning and Exit Zero Jazz Festival organizer Michael Kline just received a call from a festival attendee waiting for a flight to Africa from Philadelphia airport. He wanted to make sure to reserve his VIP passes for next year’s event. “He’s moments from embarking on this epic trip and he’s focused on what a great time he had here.” Although he didn’t have the final numbers, Michael said this year’s event was most likely a record breaker, both in terms of musicians and the crowds who came out to hear them. “The clubs were never busier,” he told us. (We’d like to add it was also a record year for the number of Grammy-nominated musicians who visited our restaurant — we provided meal vouchers to each performer.) In other words, the festival “took on a life of its own,” according to Michael. Having sipped on a few Jameson and gingers while captivated by the jazzy/bluesy/gospel stylings of Davina and the Vagabonds and the
raucous funky-rocky-jazz sounds of Big Sam’s Funky Nation on Sunday, I agree. For some people, that jazz-fest glow has been tempered by the most common Cape May frustration: Parking. (Dun, dun, dun...) We received an email from Weddings by the Sea owner Catherine Walton, who received an overtime ticket for parking in one of the mall spots where meters did not turn off on November 1, as they have in the past. Had Catherine known this, she says, “I would have parked 20 feet away on Decatur.” The
city decided to prolong the meter-monitoring (or meter-madness, depending on your perspective) in this area at the behest of the mall’s Business Improvement District. The argument? Historically, mall employees take up all available spots come November 1, leaving visitors inconvenienced. (If you’ve been following the happenings at city hall, you know there are other parking proposals currently on the table for council to discuss in coming months, including increasing the hourly rate in coveted spots in order to make parking more affordable elsewhere while amping up free trolley services.) Michael told us he heard no parking complaints during the entirety of festival weekend. But we won’t be surprised if Christmas-season visitors make the same mistake Catherine did. Existing signange has been amended, but what longtime vacationer is making a point of noticing that? We may need to think outside the box on ways to get the word out, at least until the new rules catch on. We’d like to keep our reputation more music-mecca, less parking-problem.

Bartender Of The Week
Oh, the view! We’re Still Open...
Fridays and Saturdays... still offering the finest in Tapas, Apps, and Shares.
And for an Elegant Holiday... Book your seasonal celebrations with us!
Located above Cabanas • 609-884-1925 • IronPierCraftHouse.com
Every week, we visit a local bar/restaurant to get the inside scoop from the person slinging the drinks. This week, Chris Baeringer from The Ugly Mug is up. How long have you been bartending? Seven years. Favorite drink to serve? An old-fashioned, Manhattan or a martini because I enjoy making quality, classic cocktails. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers wave to get my attention when I’m at the register. Biggest tip? A guy once gave me $200 to take a shot of bitters. Well isn’t that bitter sweet...ba-dum ching!
BEER OF THE WEEK
Cape May Brewing Co White Caps - ABV: 7.50% Brewed with hefty portions of wheat and oats, White Caps has a soft mouthfeel, a pillowy head, and a robust body. Featuring Mosaic and Citra hops, this effervescent Double IPA explodes with notes of papaya, mango, stone fruits, and citrus.
WINE OF THE WEEK
Sunset Liquors Giapoza Pinot Noir - $14.99 The wine is juicy and weighty, with smooth tannins wrapped around flavors of ripe strawberry, milk chocolate, and cinnamon. Pairs nicely with chicken and turkey. The perfect bottle for a holiday feast!
Seafood Report After chatting with some local fishermen, we were informed that oysters are in season. Did you know that oysters are meatier in months that have “r” in their names? So you may hear people call them “arsters.” Also, eating four oysters a day gives you a complete daily supply of copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and zinc. THANKS FOR ANOTHER GREAT YEAR! Join us in 2019 and unwrap more good times.

Every week, our photographer walks the streets armed with a bucket of doughnuts, courtesy of Joe and Lisa of RSK Doughnuts, on Carpenters Lane. There are about 40 mini doughnuts in here. It’s quite the treat. You can buy one at RSK. Perfect for the beach, or in front of the fire, drinking coffee and watching a movie. This week’s winners are Sydney and Chris who are servers from Baltimore, MD and were on their way to the beach when we ambushed them. So who would they most like to share this bucket with? Brendon Urie from Panic! at the Disco. PHOTOGRAPH BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column is back! Social satire, shameless plugs... and general self-indulgence.
W
as kind of a slow week here at Undertow Central, so prepare yourselves for lots of random idiocy. More so than normal. TNT Acoustic (myself and Tim Joyce; he’s the acoustic, I’m the eye candy) played a couple of gigs. And I will now tell you all about them. (What’s that? You think I’m writing overly wordy sentences just to pad out this week’s column because of a dearth of material? Why, I am offended. So offended. So very very very very very very very, very very offended.) Saturday night we played at the Anglesea Pub in North Wildwood. I’d played there a few times in the last five years or so with various musical partners — Mike Rogers, Bill Caterini, Mike Dempsey, all fine players — but it marked the first time Tim and I had played there together since the mid-90s heyday of Southwind, when then-owner Ralph Rittenhouse demanded we play Chumbawumba around six times a night.. (If you don’t know, Southwind was THE Cape May band of the 80s and 90s, and I was lucky
enough to be lead singer for five of those). So it was something of a reunion as we played to a raucous crowd that sung along with just about every song. Tim even got to whip out some Gaelic. It was a hoot-and-a-half and we’ll returning there for several dates in December. I won’t tell you when, because no one in the Exit Zero distribution area has ever made a trip across a bridge to see a musical act. (Sorry, that was mean and, quite frankly, opens me up to a good bit of roasting. The dates are December 1, 8, 28 and 29) Sunday we played at our semi-regular

off-season (so many hyphens!) home of The Brown Room. Attendance was sporadic and the mood verged on hostile as the Eagles were in the process of losing to the Cowboys (sometimes it’s good to work during the game), but we all ended up having a good time. Kevin Crookston and his wife, Gail, sat front row and heckled us all night. (To be fair, TIm asked her to) and Laurie Johnson sent a couple of Don Draper-sized cocktails my way. (To be fair, I kind of made her.) And one patron enthusiastically sang along to “Piano Man”. All in all, another great night in Cape May’s living room. We’re back on the 25th, if you’d care to join us. Speaking of Congress Hall (pow!), I’m excited to be rejoining the Congress Hall Choir for the tree-lighting festivities this year (November 30.) I’m also really nervous because it’s a lot of great music and I can’t make any of the scheduled rehearsals! But… I’ve never let a lack of rehearsal stop me before (See; Dudes, Love Me. Strangers, The. Every Show, Elaine’s.) The concert is 6-7 in the ballroom. After that, I’ll be singing out-

side with TNT: Christmas Edition (me, Tim, Terry Dougherty and Rachel Husta) 7-8. There’ll be a few songs from the choir outside at 8, with the tree being lit af around 8:20. Can’t wait. And I don’t care what anyone says; November 1 is the perfect time to start playing Christmas music. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a godless heathen. Scintillating Conversation of the Week: In the kitchen at Exit Zero Filling Station, between EZ chief Jack Wright and Filling Station kitchen stalwart Jose Ramos. A Scotsman and a Puerto Rican. They talked for five solid minutes and I have no idea what either of them said. Real-life, real-time closed caption. That’s a million-dollar idea. Forgot to mention I got to wait on a table of my old Morey’s Piers colleagues — Kyle and Jordan Morey, Denise Beckson, Wally Jurusz, Sam Shurgott and a few others. They probably felt sorry for me, going from midlevel management at a world-renowned amusement to their waiter a few years later. They shouldn’t. I’d wait on them a thousand times before spending another hour on Ghost Ship. I think Frank Underwood was talked about more in the latest/last season of House of Cards than before he got busted for jumping on top of that Rent kid. For the record; worst final season and final episode of a once-revered show I’ve ever seen. Song Recommendation of the Week: “About A Boy” by Badly Drawn Boy. I recently asked my Facebook friends to recommend the greatest alternative songs from the last 30 years as I’m curating a list for a possible future band project, and this one came up a few times. It was written for the criminally underrated Hugh Grant movie of the same name. It’s perfect. And yes, I recently quit Facebook because Facebook is stupid. What began as a nifty way to reconnect with your high school friends and former crushes has become agitprop for the American Left. To wit; a fairly decent,
November 15, 2018 yet fairly innocuous election night joke, “The Case for Abolishing the House of Representatives”, a play on Democrat’s desire to abolish whatever THING they just lost (the Senate, the Supreme Court, the Electoral college to name a few. Don’t believe me? Type “Abolish the” into your Google and see how it auto-fills) brought out a number of apparent constitutional scholars and fact-checkers, all ready to correct and shame me for my political stupidity. And why post such a bad joke if I didn’t want to debate? First, you telling me I’m wrong about everything isn’t a debate, it’s myopic close-mindedness and makes you look like the petty, humorless scold you probably are. Second, I thought humor was fair game. Or does that only apply to the 75 anti-Trump memes you share every day? The joke was fine, not my best, not my worst. The pearl-clutching reaction it inspired just made me kind of sad. Lastly this week, as many of you know, I’m a bit of a Marvel Comics nerd. I grew up reading the Golden Age stories of the mid-60s, when unforgettable characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk became the first real generation of pop culture, and began collecting during the Silver Age of the 70s and 80s. I dipped out in the 90s when everything went EXTREME, guns were the size of Volkswagens and every costume had 9000 pockets (plus, who could afford $3 for a comic?), but by then my mind had already been informed. My children will never understand what it means to be able to go see these indelible characters in a new movie every few months; so much of our father/son dynamic is built around anticipating then enjoying the vast and wondrous Marvel cinematic universe. This is all my long-winded way of saying thank you to Stan Lee, who made it cool to be a nerd. Exelsior! ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
W
e need an Aquariatorium! I know, Wildwood has that well-intended collection of fish tanks of theirs, and Coney Island has a collection of smelly penguins and a glib-looking sea lion or two. But it is high time we had a world-class center to show off our aquatic treasures! And I do not just mean the O’Malleys, that upstanding family who to a man have webbed feet and tiny gills. Though they will have a place, for sure, alongside Agnes the Mermaid, who escaped the circus ship when it ran aground at The Point one stormy night, and made friends here. She is shy and chooses to shun the limelight, but her beachfront home is, most mornings, joined to the ocean by a peculiar series of tracks in the sand. No, I mean a tank of colossal proportions, and a dozen fellows just like it! We have our kraken eggs to hatch, the remains of Captain Kidd’s ship to rehome in one, and that school of man-eating herring we captured just as they were about to devour
Adored by Visitors...
Ocean City. I think perhaps we were a little hasty with the timing there, but never mind. And we have been training sea lions for generations — initially to hunt and sink Nazi U-boats by swimming up to them when submerged and tapping out “Edelweiss” on the hulls, causing the confused Hun to open up to check whether in fact Marlene Dietrich was seeking to come in. This was a roaring success, though it came unstuck when a careless trainer left his vinyl compilation Maudlin Tunes for the Slow and Mildly Racist
playing, and soon after, the sea lions took to forming barbershop quartets and singing “Dixie” to entice a gullible folks into water. No loss, mind you, but we decided we couldn’t have that in case they learned show tunes and lured all those muscular young Cape Gay visitors away. And lord help us if they expanded their repertoire to include Irish and Scotch folk tunes. And last but not least we will need our perennial favorite, the Curious Tidal Shoebie Tank. That is a huge empty glass enclosure, with the name writ large, and an open door. Well, sure enough, first one Shoebie and then another and then, given herd mentality, dozens of them, will crowd in, braying “Say! What IS this?” and “Mabel, take me a selfie of me!” and suchlike. At which point the door locks and the tank fills with a million gallons of water in under three seconds. This attraction dovetails nicely with the scheduled feeding of Jane, the famous New Jersey Great White, who is in fact a pet of ours, and rather sweet, if she is fed her bodyweight in fresh tourists every week.

T
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, watching football
here is a magic in football that makes grown men sigh — something to do with a chill in the air, green grass and camaraderie. I’ve seen it in the eyes of former players of all levels, from an old southern gentleman who played for the Eagles in the 1950s to his contemporary, who played only pickup games. I’ve seen it in recent graduates and injured players; in big offensive linemen and slight kickers, even in team moms, cheerleaders and spectators. I don’t get it — I would have been one of the few Americans happy to see Heidi start on time in 1968, famously depriving football fans of the chance to see the conclusion of the game between the New York Jets and the Oakland Raiders. I do appreciate the game’s built-in metaphors — there’s a hint of melancholy in the knowledge that the season is short, that you only get so many chances, and that sometimes you’re going to get hurt. American football has its roots in old English games. Some speculate the name referred to games played by peasants on
foot, instead of on horseback by the ruling class. The word shows up in English as early as 1363 and 1424, in laws passed by aristocrats to ban “idle play” for the working classes. By the 1820s, “football” was used to describe diverging sports — the rough game played at the Rugby School in Warwickshire, England; the ball-carrying version played in Scone, Scotland; and the foot-dribbling version played in Westminster, which became Association football or soccer. On the other side of Atlantic, American college players allowed blocking, added the
line of scrimmage, and introduced “down and distance,” giving the offensive team four chances to gain yardage. Rutgers and Princeton played the first college game in 1869; by 1890, the game had taken on a recognizable form, and by 1910, the huddle, the snap and the forward pass came into use. Because it’s a team game, football is best enjoyed in a crowd. Sure, you can watch alone and argue with the TV screen, but it’s more fun to debate calls with other fans while eating cheesy, carb-y snacks. You can make friendly wagers on more than the score, speculate on the relative per-hour earning capacity of Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady, or discuss fantasy football. In Cape May, you can find fellow fans at a number of places. Be prepared to root for the Philadelphia Eagles, whoever is playing Dallas and, of course, your own home team. The 5 West Pub offers Eagles Game Day specials. The Boiler Room offers specials all day Sunday, and the Rusty Nail offers Pigs and Pigskins. Check out Fins for NFL Primetime and C-View for fine football food.

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady The holidays are on us and I am already beginning to dread them. I have no family to speak of, but my husband is one of six. It’s not that I don’t love his family. The problem is that he doesn’t get along with some of his brothers — especially the elder one. They are 50-year-old men still vying for their mother’s attention. And she does nothing to stop it. There is always some spat every time we visit. Like clockwork, three days before Thanksgiving, he picks a fight with me over something silly. I’m quite tired of it. — Post-Holiday Stress Disorder Dear Disorder Clearly, counseling is the only real answer to this. In the short term, try not to dance with him. If he picks a fight, try to ignore it as much as you can. Secondly, is

there any way to NOT go to the obligatory Thanksgiving dinner? Feign illness and have a quiet dinner at home? Every year would put a strain on any marriage. Test the waters post-Thanksgiving when he’s in a better humor and see how he takes it. In the meantime, why don’t the two of you go on over to Oyster Bay. Have a nice cocktail and some shucked oysters at the bar. Breathe, relax and enjoy each other’s company. Dear Answer Lady I have to lose five pounds before
mid-December when I am attending a formal Christmas dinner for my company. I bought the dress six months ago and just happened to try it on the other day and went ballistic when the zipper wouldn’t zip. It’s a beautiful dress and I would never find anything more suitable this late in the game. — Too Tight to Breathe Dear Too Tight Long term? Enrol in North Beach Gym. Make that your Christmas present to yourself. Short term, lay off carbs and booze completely and walk, walk, walk. There are plenty of nature trails around especially at Cape May Point State Park. And then there are those lovely beaches we have. Walk along the sand. It’s more resistance than walking along the promenade. Also, Cape May’s community pool at the Cape May Elementary School is now open. There is no more perfect exercise than swimming. However, you might want to think about Plan B — Victorious at the Pink House has some lovely frocks, or find a seamstress to let out the seams a bit.

The Movie Column
W
Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society reviews “The Old Man and the Gun”
hen I was younger, I’d ask a lot of questions before going to the movies — what’s it about? Who’s in it? Now that I’m older, one question stands out: “What’s the run time?” There are a lot of long movies out there. How long should a movie? Answer: as long as it needs to be — and not a minute more. The Old Man and the Gun seemed interesting. Robert Redford is the star, says it will be his last movie. Interesting… but… run time? One hour, 30 minutes. I’m in! And I went in with high expectations. Maybe they were unfounded expectations. Would it to be like my favorite bank robber movie, Hell or High Water? That was one of the top three movies of 2016. I know. I know. Comparing movies like that is unfair. Anyway, this movie was nothing like it. And it was good, very good in fact. Sissy Spacek glowed as Redford’s love interest. Danny Glover and Tom Waits turned in wonderful supporting performances. Casey Affleck was in it. I still hav-
\Redford excels in what may be his last movie en’t seen him act yet — just seems to be playing the subdued character he seems to be in real life. The story follows career criminal Forrest Tucker during his last string of bank robberies ( you guessed it, as an old man). He is a prison escape artist as well. In that, the film had some chuckles and perhaps even a couple of tense moments. But it never had the depth and substance of Hell or High Water. Okay, okay. No more comparisons. The chemistry between Redford and
Spacek was thoroughly enjoyable. And when he was with his fellow robbers (Glover, Waits), there was a genuine ease about their interactions. Affleck’s character and story was one dimensional with really little compelling about it — and it needed to be as the cop hunting Redford down. Please see aforementioned assessment about the actor’s way subdued persona. If this one gets some Oscar nominations — prediction, it probably won’t — but if it does, it’s because of the “old person“ sympathy vote. Like Eastwood sometimes gets. Anyway, The Old Man and the Gun were good entertainment — I just wanted this flick to be great. As I left the theater, no joke... a man behind me says to his wife, “It was about 20 minutes too long.” I had to turn around and say, “Yes, but it could’ve been a two-and-ahalf-hour movie and 20 minutes too long.” So it was a little like daylight savings time in the fall. At least we got to go home and get another hour of sleep. Points for that in this old man’s book!

Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
Y
esterday, it happened again. A couple from Texas, edging into retirement, walked onto the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State Park and, with a little guidance, were brought to discover birds. The northern harrier hunting the marsh edge was captivating, but the spray of yellow-rumped warblers also garnered their attention. They seemed surprised that I was familiar with the area around Houston. I explained that travel was the great side benefit of birding. You can take the hobby anywhere. The ecotourist infrastructure is phenomenal. There are lodges in places that Rand McNally has never heard of. River cruises down the Amazon, fine dining in facilities built atop Mayan ruins. But if you never travel farther than Cumberland County, you should know that the Delaware Bay region offers some of the finest bird watching on earth. Back to the Texas couple. Later, I ran into them at the Northwood Center in Cape May Point, test-driving binoculars. Noting that
they’d moved up to one of the Alpha instruments instead of the bargain pair I’d recommended, I congratulated them on their choice and was pleased to note that they’d taken my advice and purchased a Kaufman Field Guide to the Birds of North America. Boy, I love it when people listen to me. When people tell me “they tried birding but found it frustrating,” one of two things happen. Either their binoculars were not designed for birding or they owned the Audubon field guide with the plastic green
cover. The book should be illegal — it was based on a false premise and the images are marginal at best. So if you tried birding and found it frustrating, head over to CMBO and get outfitted. Now all you need are birds and since you are in Cape May, that is an easy problem to solve. Fall migration continues. You aren’t too late. November is actually the most exciting month to be in Cape May. You never know what is going to turn up. Rare vagrants and November are synonymous. Western kingbird, anyone? There’s got to be one or three somewhere. Try checking out the utility lines along New England Road. Western Kingbirds seem to love this stretch. But if all you turn up are eastern phoebes and cardinals, it still beats sitting indoors and getting all steamed up about the news. It’s a proven fact. Bird watching lowers blood pressure and gets you the exercise your GP has been telling you to get. You may even live long enough to save enough for that river cruise down the Amazon.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
UNO is young... about one year and he weighs 65 pounds. He recently arrived at the shelter with very little history. He is a dog that will require space and exercise. He has good leash manners and seems to enjoy walking distances. He likes to run in the play yard, but does not know the game of fetch. Give Uno a shot — he’s number one. (Get it?)
BELLA is a 6 year old lady who is already a shelter favorite. She lived with children but as the family grew, they did not have enough time to devote to her. Bella loves to be with people and happily leans into “her human” for petting and attention. Bella is your allaround wonderful, happy dog! Stop by the shelter and adopt Bella today.
AURORA is a one-year-old doberman mix who arrived at the shelter as a stray and is trying to fit into her new environment. She loves human interaction and wears a ready smile for anyone who interacts with her. She is learning proper behavior cues and is eager to learn new things that will make her transition to a home easier.
