It’s Restaurant Time In Cape May! The best thing about spring in Cape May? Sure, the suddenly sprouting daffodils and cherry blossoms are lovely. But it’s the restaurant reopenings that really raise the spirits. After a winter when only the few remain open, spring is the time when you can once again sample food and drinks from some of the best restaurants in the south of the state. Washington Inn, Merion Inn and Rusty Nail are among the latest to open their doors. Now get out there and feast!

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

The vampire squid, which grows to about a foot, has webbing between its arms that it turns inside out and wears like a cape, hence his name. If he gets scared, he shoots blue, glow-in-the-dark mucus from the tips of these arms to stun a predator and make a break for it. Because they’re often injured during capture, it’s difficult to obtain vampire squids for observation. None were ever on display until 2014, at Monterey Bay Aquarium.

The original Cape May Jazz Festival launched in 1994 with a city-wide concert that drew nearly 2,000 people to venues throughout the city. What started as a grass-roots effort gained credibility as a nonprofit. Over the years, jazz greats like five-time Grammy winner Terence Blanchard and Clark Terry, mentor to Miles Davis, performed. The economic impact to the city was very positive. But, due to infighting amongst the board, the festival came to an end after 16 years. In 2012, music agent Michael Kline took over the reigns and launched the Exit Zero International Jazz Festival, which takes place in November and April (this weekend!) each year. It’s earned a reputation as one of the most respected and creative festivals in the nation.

Save Me the Plums Ruth Reichl In this memoir, the former editor of the late, great Gourmet magazine recounts her years at the helm, sharing media gossip, interactions with celebrity chefs and personal anecdotes about life as a working mom. It’s... deliciously good.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: 5 West Pub in North Cape May, brought to you by the same folks behind Tisha’s Fine Dining on Washington Street Mall. (5 West is located just five miles from Tisha’s, hence the name.) The server: Donna, who was swift and friendly. (Yes, we DID resist the urge to break out in the Ritchie Valens song when she introduced herself, so please send all the gold stars.) The trivia: This place used to be a Wawa. Now, with a sleekbut-rustic design and casual-but-cool vibe, it’s a higher-end pub where everything is homemade. They also host great specials during Phillies games, so what’s not to love? The Food: Meatballs for Jack, south-Philly style. What can we say? He likes his beef like he likes his women. (Diane’s from Philly, not shaped like a meatball, if you need that one spelled out.) We also enjoyed pan-seared scallops with bacon and onion marmalade and wasabi cream. They were locally caught and you could tell. Then there was the special buffalo chicken wrap with lettuce and tomato. They don’t call it “special” for nothing. Plus a side of broccoli rabe sautéed in olive oil and garlic for a healthy dose of vitamin K. The contest: Have you heard about the Shaken and Stirred Chopped Competition these guys hosted? Twelve area bartenders competed for a $100 gift card to 5 West, a very nice bottle of booze and — most importantly — bragging rights. They had five minutes to make the best cocktail possible from a mystery box of ingredients. Preliminary rounds took place over the course of several weeks, and the championships were held last Thursday. Congrats to Mike Wilson of Carney’s for winning it all, and to 5 West for thinking up such a cool event. The conversation: The ups and downs and ins and outs and highs and lows of our experience in the restaurant industry. It’s a roller coaster. As in, it makes you feel exhilarated and also slightly nauseous all at the same time. The consensus: If we could, we’d high-five 5 West. (See what we did there?)

It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places — from $3 off fudge to $15 off dinner. It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into Lynne Schneider and Marianne Torbert, from Philadelphia, who were on their way to Sunset Beach. We asked them to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. They picked out a $10 discount for Cape May Fish Market. Who would they like to share this with? The innkeepers at Queen Victoria, where they were staying.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

his week in the hapless adventures of your average twit… Compared with past weeks, this one was relatively uneventful. I mean, it was full of events, but not EVENT-events. One of these was the absurdly fantastic Billy Joel show by my tribute band, The Strangers, at Cabanas on Saturday. After a nomadic winter playing Beatles shows at Carney’s and the Ugly Mug (two fine venues I look forward to playing again this summer), it was nice to return “home” to Cabanas. It took a few songs to settle into a groove (we hadn’t played since September), but once we did it was possibly the best we ever sounded. At least until my throat gave out and I was kind of shouting on key. Al Olivero, Sue Polcer, Walt Sapsai, Steve Kyle and Dave Landis carried my sorry ass across the finish line. (Sorry for the foul language, I’m testing my editor to see how far I can push it. Fart.) Stalwart supporters (and world’s nicest stalkers) Randy and Wendy Redelico were on hand to dance and sing along. Wendy slid me her traditional $50 (that’s what it costs to be

my friend) and Randy vehemently thwarted my attempts to kiss him hello and goodbye. He’s very Terryphobic, that one. A sweetheart, but a total Terryphobe. Gregg Carpenter stopped in after his Mad Batter gig to listen to a few songs and make the singer real nervous. I keep trying to get him to join one of my bands. I think he’s holding out for the Barry Manilow tribute, Terry Man I’m Low. Kath Scullion and Dean Bloemer continued their Lou Gehrig-like streak a day after having snacks and watching the Phils at

Exit Zero Filling Station. (I wasn’t sure about Bryce Harper, but after the Phanatic cleats, the Rocky decal on his bats and scoring from first on a single to left field, I’m ALL IN.) Justin Mattes is a Cape May local I didn’t meet until we ended up in the same Billy Joel fan group on Facebook. Justin is profoundly disabled, and just as profoundly nice, offering an assortment of fist-bumps and high-fives before scootering home. Presumably through Bedford-Stuy, alone. Lisa and Lou Mraw, followers of O’Brien & Joyce, drank the Kool-Aid and came to their first Terry O’Brien-led tribute show. The first of many, I hope. I usually try to end these little paragraphs with a punchline, but Lisa and Lou are just so nice it’s hard to think of one. How about… Lou has big feet! (Nailed it.) Billy Joel Night, Part 2 is Saturday, May 4 at Cabanas. After that, it may be time to retire a few of these songs — the ol’ pipes don’t stretch quite as far as they used to and “An Innocent Man” just points at me and laughs. This show will be 7pm-11pm so all you old codgers can stay for more than one set. Come

for the Early Bird Special, stay for the rock and roll show! (I mock, but I’m ready for bed by 6pm.) The only thing more fun than the Billy Joel show was clocking in for my breakfast shift the morning after. I’m not a morning person in general, seven hours after a gig I’m positively murderous, especially if you want something off the menu. THE MENU IS THE MENU, PEOPLE. PLEASE USE IT. But I digress… We hosted a baby shower for the Negro family (5 West, Tisha’s) that was legitimately fun (and lucrative, thank you Paul and Jennifer!). Most of the wait staff from 5 West were on hand and took great joy in making ME serve THEM for a change. We must have served 500 Aperol Spritzes, Mumbai Manhattans and Jalapeno Mangoritas (welcome to this back door ad for the EZFS cocktail menu), all expertly constructed by Jimmy Murtha, for whom I have an excellent nickname that won’t get past the censors. Good luck with all the having of the baby and stuff! Nancy Granick popped in for lunch and we talked baseball, which I really needed. Nobody in my house likes baseball and their eyes glaze over when I start talking about on-base-plusslugging percentages. The Kennett Square McCarthys had some breakfast and grossly over-tipped their server, even though he forgot their sausage. They’re Kennett Square McCarthys but not related to THOSE Kennett Square McCarthys. This paragraph is for the seven people on Earth who know what I’m talking about. Birding weirdo Tom Johnson (aka Big Sexy!) is working his way through our menu one item at a time. Tom was about to depart on a trip to Colorado where he, in essence, leads birding tours. (He also likes our Highlander). Please don’t tell him I called him a weirdo while he was gone. You know how violent those birding weirdos can get. On Monday I slept through my alarm and arrived 40 minutes late for an acting job I’d booked.

April 11, 2019 And, of course, one of the wind-y little back roads you have to take to get to Cranbury, NJ was being paved and traffic was stopped for 15 minutes. Once inside, and after apologizing profusely for my tardiness, I could NOT. STOP. SWEATING. Seriously. It was like Albert Brooks in Broadcast News. Also? Couldn’t remember the lines I didn’t have time to study over the weekend. So, how’d it go? Crushed it. One take for each of my two scenes. 110 miles up, five minutes in front of the camera, 110 miles back. $900. Need three of these a week… The production assistant asked, “Weren’t you the used car guy in that commercial?”, completely making this actor’s day. I made the drive up in my sweet, sweet 2019 Galactic Aquamarine Toyota Camry. (Okay, I actually took the Gun Metal Grey 2013 Highlander, but this seemed a cool way to introduce the Camry.) We almost bought a used one, but figured what the heck? Let’s lease ourselves a new car, we’ve earned it. I am now dangerously close to having a cool car. My first since my 79 Chevette. Tisha Roussos, have you seen my new car? I was surprised to see that Elaine’s is bringing in an outside company to produce their shows this year after decades of employing in-house writer-directors, of which I was one. Three times. Which may explain why they’re bringing in an outside production company. I happen to think this is a pretty great idea, though I am saddened that it marks the end of Parker Smith’s tenure with the company. Parker and I butted heads a lot over the years (mostly because he’s a bleeding heart liberal hippie pinko commie bastard) but there was no one I more enjoyed sharing a stage with. And the laughs were plentiful. On to the next chapter, friend. Gah! I’m out of room again! We’ll talk about all my upcoming gigs and projects next time. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

W

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ell, that’s my base tan sorted for the season already. The recent sunny spell has seen my skin tone segue from Translucent Alabaster (trademarked, and available as a premium gloss paint from all top suppliers) to “Angry Lobster” in no time at all! In fact, as I dictate this column, my manservant Kitchener is carefully applying aloe to the entirety of my body (I do not hold with partial tans — “all or nothing” is the D’Catur family motto, after all), and I can finally talk without weeping from the pain. This method of tanning is one that myself and a small handful of aficionados in Cape May favor. One of whom is the current president of the “Cape May Wild Tanners”, as well as the editor in chief of this infamous newspaper. (He also seems to run a singularly delightful gasoline station in the town, called Exit Zero Filling Station. I stop by every week to buy 100 gallons of fuel to support local businesses. My treasured Aston Martin only runs of highly leaded patrol from 1930, so I have no specific use for the stuff, other than to fashion

Molotov Cocktails to throw at overly exuberant Shoebies in high season). He and I and some others (though not as many as there used to be. I would almost come to believe we are doing something unhealthy, ridiculous though that sounds) meet on the first hot cloudless day, at a secret spot on the beach, where slowly rotating tanning rigs have been set up, not unlike roasting spits but without the spike part. We shed our clothes, are oiled by lithe assistants (virgin olive oil only) and are turned at a rate of once a minute, so that the tan is perfectly applied.

Find Your Way Back...

There’s no time limit as such: once an hour Kitchener cracks a raw egg on our bellies as we slowly pass horizontal, and if they fry before sliding off, then we are ready to call it a day. At that stage we are draped in light robes and discuss how well we feel and look. I know, I know, there are some minor downsides to this method, not least being the next day’s agony, and the startling crimson skin tone. But amazingly, when you repeat the process soon after, you then go a deep, luxurious mahogany shade, that can last all season. Admittedly, sometimes you wake up a week later to find that you have shed your skin in the night, but that’s a risk we Wild Tanners take. As for those who say we are rash, I point to our founder, and local worthy, Wally Herbert. You may not know him by name, but you will by sight. Wally is the stooped chap with the skin like a chocolate alligator and the cataracts. It is with this in mind that we will, this season, be painting the sidewalks of the city in reflective silver metallic paint. This will ensure all residents have an all-over tan, with no charge.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, collecting history

ooking at the history of African Americans in Cape May, it’s tempting to focus on the big names. Harriet Tubman reportedly walked these streets and ran her underground railroad through them. Stephen Smith used his actual railroad to carry hundreds of people north from slavery. Of course, it’s impossible to celebrate these heroes without addressing the shameful parts. New Jersey permitted severe treatment of slaves, and our gradual emancipation plan meant that there were still slaves here in 1846, and still “apprentices for life” until 1865. New Jersey officially assisted with the return of fugitive slaves to their “owners.” In 1804, a black man named William Coachman, a taxpayer in Middle Township, was sold as a slave, and it took years to regain his freedom. Cape May’s resorts welcomed slaveholders as guests, even when they brought their slaves. Tubman and Smith worked for freedom here, but escaped slaves had to travel further north to be truly free. Still, thanks to unnamed heroes who carried out small, everyday acts of bravery, a

thriving community of African Americans called Cape May home after the Civil War. By the 1920s, 30% of the population was black, and there were 60 black-owned business in town. The 1960s brought aggressive urban renewal which destroyed many of these business and caused hundreds of people to leave town. Some persisted, and today Cape May’s African American population hovers around 5%. One who stayed was the late Janet Davidson Nash. With her husband, John, Nash ran the Planter Hotel in Cape May at 810 Lafayette Street. According to an ad in a 1972 issue

of Ebony magazine, the Planter offered efficiency apartments, AC and TV. A postcard shows bright yellow awnings and plenty of parking. Janet, called “Dolly,” named the hotel for a ship used to ferry slaves to freedom in 1862. Dolly’s great-grandfather, Robert Smalls, piloted the Planter, a Confederate ship, through the Union blockade, earning freedom for himself and 16 others. Smalls returned to the south and bought the Beaufort, South Carolina home where he had been enslaved. Dolly and John, a native of Cape May who attended the Franklin Street School, met at Hampton University in Virginia. They both became schoolteachers and later, amateur historians and collectors. Their collection, along with African art from the late Reverend Robert Davis, of the Macedonia Baptist Church, and others, form Collecting History: Personal Collections of Cape May’s African American Community presented by the Center for Community Arts in association with Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities. The exhibit, at the Emlen Physick Estate, runs through April 14. Admission is free.

The Quicky Horoscopes Your near future in two sentences by Lady Diane

OPEN YEAR ROUND

Washington Common, Cape May 609-884-8643 l lynnardens.com

ARIES You will attend the Exit Zero Jazz Fest this weekend. To the dismay of your friends, you will begin saying things like, “I’m digging these chill jives, man,” “We’re in the pocket,” and “Look at these hepcats.” TAURUS You will sign up for the MudHen Brewing Co half marathon at the end of the month. You will not actually run, but you WILL sport your finest athleisure that day, which is practically the same thing. GEMINI You will decide to learn a new language. Instead, you will spend hours Googling Katharine Hepburn and imitating her transAtlantic accent, which is practically the same thing. CANCER You will finally replace the lightbulb that’s been out for an embarrassingly long time. You will feel so accomplished, you will reward yourself with a Manhattan and an episode of Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares. LEO You will embark upon your favorite, most sacred ritual — breaking out your flip-flops for the first time this season. You will swear you hear angels singing from the heavens. VIRGO You will get wind that Kraken Curry is back on the menu at Exit Zero Filling Station. You will invite your friends to join you for dinner by way of a text that reads IT IS TIME TO UNLEASH THE KRAKEN. LIBRA You will hear that the new Boarding House hotel on Lafayette Street is pet friendly. You will book a staycation for you and your dog, who seems extra stressed out by the political climate recently. SCORPIO You will attempt the keto diet. You will determine giving up carbs is akin to giving up joy, and you celebrate this revelation with a plate of linguini from Sapore. SAGITTARIUS You will finally remember to make a list before heading to the grocery store. You will forget to bring the list. CAPRICORN After extensive research, you will determine that Starfruit Lemonade is the best flavor of seltzer water. You will find excitement in the bubbles. AQUARIUS You will finally clean out your car. You will find six pens, 29 quarters and 37 feet of expired CVS receipts. PISCES You will try Krusty’s Partially-Gelatinated Non-Dairy GumBased Beverage from Cape May Brewing Company. You will feel inspired to rewatch old episodes of the “The Simpsons.”

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My 14-year-old son is keen to have a summer job but I’m not sure he’s ready or that the employer is ready for him. On the plus side, he is very energetic and a self-starter. He’s also reliable and honest. On the negative, he’s very open and says inappropriate things. I don’t want to see him fired at 14. I’d also like him to be a kid for another summer or two. He’ll hopefully be working for the rest of his life. Why not enjoy these next two years? Am I being paranoid? — Hovering Mom Dear Hovering Paranoid? No. Overprotective? Yes. He is young but if he is willing, why not let him give it a try? There are plenty of opportunities — Beach Plum Farm, the Original Fudge Kitchen. Many restaurants

hire young people to bus tables. Landscapers may be another avenue depending on his interests. Or, what about a job beachside? Cape May has a great Junior Lifeguard program. The important thing is to let HIM find the job, not you or your husband. If he takes it upon himself, it stands to reason he will be more likely to make it a success and it will show great initiative to you and, more importantly, as you say, to the employer. Dear Answer Lady My baby is due next month and

everyone wants to be in the delivery room. At first, I was happy about that, but now that the due date is nearing, I’m not so sure. My nagging mother, my opinionated mother-in-law, my hyperactive sister, the dads and my husband. It’s a lot of people. On the other hand, if something doesn’t go right (I want to have a natural childbirth) — I want someone fighting for me. And, I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. — Fretting Mom-to-Be Dear Fretting Mom The answer to your dilemma is called a waiting room. All, save hubby, go there and wait. If a problem arises, it falls on hubby to communicate that. In terms of hurt feelings, simply tell them it’s doctor’s orders. Which it would be anyway — all those germs. It’s a birth, not a gala. In the meantime, make yourself happy with a trip to Happy Baby and Lynn Arden’s Children’s Shop. All those cute little onesies, baby clothes and nursery items will make you smile — how can they do otherwise? Happy thoughts. And stop worrying about all those pesky relatives.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

am ever amazed at the doggedness of birders. Monday, April 1 was a case in point. Temperatures in the parking lot of South Cape May parking lot were flirting with the freezing mark but the sustained winds were 15-20 mph, making it difficult to stand. Co-leader Chuck and I stood alone at 7:25, pondering whether anyone would show. Only once have no patrons showed and that was a cold rainy day in March. But as birders often say, “I’d rather bird in the rain than strong winds.” Sure enough one car, then two, then three filed in and soon we were joined by five patrons and three other leaders. Setting off under the conjoined calls of male Red-winged Blackbirds, I wasn’t optimistic about prospects for a memorable walk. But you never know what Ma Nature is going to serve up. Weather doesn’t determine whether there will be birds, but where and what. It was Bill who first directed us to the swarm of large white birds arcing over the dunes. Gannets, Northen Gannets, a Northern Hemisphere booby. Wintering off the Carolinas, when the internal clock of gan-

nets strikes March, these large seabirds head north to breeding cliffs off Nova Scotia, Head winds or no, the birds were heading north. And while the parade of gannets is commonly routed well offshore, the winds prompted them to hug the shore, heading somewhat unaccountably into the bay. Hundreds of blade-winged birds arrowing into Delaware Bay and knifing into the water. I estimated one thousand birds in view at once and they kept coming, the greatest migration of gannets I’ve ever seen.

Transfixed by the sight, the pair of Oystercatchers pinned below the lip of sand by the wind almost went unnoticed until we were within 30 feet, a distance that permits a near macroscopic view of these shorebirds. Through spotting scopes, the yellow, goat-like eyes were riveting and their strident whistles as a dog walker pushed them to higher ground were loud enough to carry over the wind. Good morning ma’am, it’s April. Beach-nesting bird time. Time for dogs to be on leashes, just as the signs advise. Thank you in advance for being a good neighbor to the birds. I own dogs and love to see run them on the beach outside nesting season. And I note that Higbee Beach has no leash laws and no beach-nesting birds to trouble. Not that Higbee Beach would have been any less windy, Frankly I admire your fortitude and note that only one of your dogs took out after the birds. Bad dog? No, just doing what dogs do. Bad dog owner. We give a little, the birds give a little and we all enjoy an ecologically rich Cape May. See you next week?

PRINCE is a labrador retriever and boxer mix who recently came to the shelter as a stray. He is friendly and loves to run freely in the playyard. Prince is healthy and clearly lived with a family, however, there is no history to report whether he lived with children or other pets.
