We were stoked — or, in jazz parlance, it blew our top — to sponsor last weekend’s Exit Zero International Jazz Festival. The event, produced by Michael Kline, takes place twice per year and brings world-class musicians to our island for a weekend of phenomenal performances at venues throughout town. Among the artists? Grammy-winning legend Chick Corea, New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band and soulful gospel-jazz musician Lizz Wright, whom NPR calls “effortless and elevated.” We ended the weekend feeling inspired, exhilarated and, yeah... jazzed.

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS
Weird Sea Creature
Did You Know?
What We’re Reading
The Longhorn Cowfish is cute, with horns that protrude from its head. These horns, which grow back if damaged, make it more difficult to swallow, so less appealing to predators. Some have described these guys as “Pokemonlike.” Don’t be fooled — if a longhorn cowfish is stressed, he’ll release a deadly poison from his skin. To uncover his food, animal and plant matter, he’ll use his mouth to blow away sand on the ocean floor. Aww!
The abolitionist Harriet Tubman worked at hotels in Cape May and used her earnings to become one of the most significant conductors on the Underground Railroad. In Wilbraham Park, you can see a tree that was planted in her honor, a rare species, the Franklinia, that once only existed in the deep south. The Macedonia Baptist Church is currently working to convert an adjacent, pre-Victorian house to a museum that will also honor Cape May’s once-large African American community. It should be completed in 2020 to coincide with the release of the new $20, which will bear Tubman’s face on the front.
What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours Helen Oyeyemi Called “flawless” by NPR, this collection of short stories reads like a novel. There’s the tale of an abandoned child and one about students at a puppetry school. Each is beautiful.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Or, as was the case this week, we went a little further. To Philly. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: The Love in Philadelphia (Hey, sometimes we go over the bridge.) This place is brought to you by the same people behind Talula’s Garden. That’s right, it’s another Stephen Starr winner. A must-visit if you find yourself on S. 18th Street in the city of brotherly love any time soon. The occasion: Diane flew in from San Francisco, so we needed to pick her up from the airport. Boy were her arms tired. Badum-ching! The server: His name was Tyler, but Diane called him a “beautiful specimen of a man.” He told us about the Lambrusco cocktail he’d been drinking the night before — and no, this affinity for painfully outdated, fizzy Italian wine did not make him any less beautiful. The food: Let’s start with those complementary bread sticks, a crunchy, fennel-infused treat. Then we ordered the exotic mushroom toast — you’ve never seen bread this sexy — followed by the grilled spring asparagus topped with salsa verde, an egg and truffle gremolata. [Insert chef’s kiss here.] Next up: spaghetti and lobster, complete with a rich lobster bisque and crispy celery. To die for. Finally, the half rack of ribs was whole on flavor, thanks to a citrus barbeque sauce, brussel sprout slaw and buttery skillet cornbread. As a palette cleanser, we enjoyed the torched broccoli smothered in scratch-made hot sauce. Exquisite. The elevator: There’s a little free library in there, where you can add a book and take a book at no charge. How… novel. (We’ll see ourselves out.) The drinks: Let’s talk about the very good bourbon drink. What do you mean “What was it?” It was a very good bourbon drink! Ah, we see the problem here. Very Good Bourbon Drink is the actual name. This is the “Who’s on first” of mixology. The cocktail is made with Jim Beam black, Gran Classico bitter, Iris vermouth and apple cider. It lives up to its name. The consensus: One of us just might have to book another flight out of Philly, so that we can book another flight into Philly, so that we have an excuse to stop over at The Love on our way home to Exit 0.

Chef’s Signature Dish Place: Harpoons on the Bay Chef: Lisa Shriver Signature dish: The Harpoons Shrimp (tempura style with wasabi aioli); the smoked white fish dip served with everything crackers; and, of course, the burger. “It’s a chef’s blend of meat served on a nice, soft snowflake roll that absorbs the juice of the patty really well,” Lisa says.
Wine Of The Week Collier’s Liquor Store Austerity 2017 Cab Sauvignon - $14.99 Honey-laced red cherries, spice-cake, molasses and cola aromas show on the nose of this widely available bottling. It’s a bit sweet and simple on the palate, with cherry-brioche flavors. Pairs well with grilled meats served with hearty root vegetables or bold pasta dishes.

The Exit Zero Filling Station Ambush Come get gas at our place and you might just get lucky!
It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places — from $3 off fudge to $15 off dinner. It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into Lucille Doherty, from Rio Grande, who was on her way to the grocery store. We asked her to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. She picked out a $5 discount for The Spice Cellar. Who would she like to share this with? Her sister who lives in Florida.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
elcome to this week’s most Underest of Tows. The good news is nothing too harrowing happened this past week (aside from those new car payments); the bad news is I’ve had a couple of cocktails. Or is that the good news? Regardless, this will be the best column I never remember. I’d like to start with an apology. I wrote a bit about Justin Mattes last week that ruffled a few feathers and, in retrospect, it’s not hard to understand why. Justin is a local guy, a fellow writer, and a fellow annoyingly huge Billy Joel fan. (We’re like the Scientologists of music fans: “Listen, I promise, it’s really good, and at the end you’ll feel so much better…”) Pre-Apology of the Week: To any Scientologists reading this. If it helps, Tom Cruise is my personal lord and savior. Pre-Pre-Apology of the Week: To any Christians I may have offended with that last sentence. If it helps, Jesus is my homeboy. Pre-Pre-Pre-Apology of the Week: To any old school rappers I may have offended with my use of the word “homeboy” in such a
non-Dope manner. If it helps, I have a License to Ill. But I’ve gotten off track, as often happens when I’ve had a few drinks and I’m trying to un-make myself look like a total jerk. So, Justin is disabled. I poked a little good-natured fun at this (I am nothing if not an equal opportunity ball-breaker) and that made a lot of people mad, which I get. I thought it was relatively harmless, tied together with a pretty lame Billy Joel joke, so I didn’t quite get the big deal. Then I realized that I wasn’t the one who read about himself
in a really popular local magazine, written by someone he thought was a friend. And for a while I just felt awful. Then Justin very graciously accepted my private and public apologies and, while I still feel a little awful, it’s a whole lot less awful than I felt a few days ago. Thank you, Justin. You are a good man and you’ve made me a better one. I look forward to seeing you at Billy Joel Night Part 2 on Saturday, May 4 at Cabanas, where I hear you’ll be giving erotic lap dances to all the Uptown Girls, though you can’t afford to buy them pearls. (Humor is my mechanism. I’m really sorry. Justin is not the first person I’ve unintentionally offended with my words. I can only try to make him the last.) If you couldn’t tell by the front-page picture in this week’s issue, last weekend was the Exit Zero (we’re just a sponsor, not the organizer) Jazz Festival! Now listen, previous jokes I’ve written about jazz weekends have gotten me angry emails, shunned in public places and once even suspended from this very column. So I’m just going to say this: for

three days, at least, Cape May was cooler than Paul Newman. And that’s pretty dang cool. Exit Zero Filling Station had the honor of making dinner for jazz giant Chick Corea (or, as I explained to my kids, the Kanye West of jazz), who requested an off-menu curry (the jazz equivalent of demanding ONLY green M&Ms backstage) comprised of mostly squash and chickpeas. There’s talk of adding it to our regular menu; the Chick (pea) Curry-a. (Jazz snaps, jazz snaps…) And from my very unscientific survey, it seems a lot of jazz guys love Billy Joel. You see? Take THAT everyone who ridiculed me for being an obsessive Billy Joel fan from 1983 to present! Speaking of Billy Joel, my Beatles band, Love Me Dudes, is back at Carney’s this Good Friday night, 7-11 (THAT’S SEVEN-TO-ELEVEN FOR ALL YOU OLD PEOPLE IN THE BACK!) How great is my life that every few weeks I get to sing some of the greatest songs ever written by some of my favorite artists for some of my favorite people in front of my awesome bands? Pretty great. Carney’s has been pretty great to us this off-season, so we hope you’ll come see us there. Their new brick-oven pizza is fantasmagoric. Speaking of The Beatles, my Billy Joel band, The Strangers, will be at the Anglesea Pub 8-12 on, uh, Super Saturday, or whatever they call the Saturday after Good Friday but before Easter Sunday. (Catholicism can be very confusing… Pre-Pre-Pre-Pre Apology of the Week…) I know it’s Wildwood, but I promise it’s a good time and if you don’t come out to see us then Sean MacMullan is gonna take my thumbs, Charlie! (Points for getting the Pope of Greenwich Village reference. Bonus Points for reading it in your Eric Roberts voice.) Speaking of Eric Roberts, my acoustic duo, O’Brien & Joyce, is playing the Brown Room in Congress Hall on Saturday, 3-7. I know 3-7 Saturday is earlier than 8-12 Saturday and that
April 18, 2019 these paragraphs are out of order, I know how time works! But I’m writing this column like jazz, man. It doesn’t have to make sense, IT JUST HAS TO BE. (Did I mention I’ve had a few drinks? Makes it hard to write this while driving… Get off the sidewalk, asshole! Pfft… pedestrians.) I don’t know what to make of this next collection of words (fitting for this week’s column), but Secondo bartender Mike Rohm told me a story about Christopher Cross (“Arthur’s Theme”) renting a boat from the late, great Peter Tork (The Monkees) to go sailing with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (“Southern Cross”). Just… what? I’ve been teasing this next bit for a while now, and I guess you’ve earned some… relief? Is that gross? Anyway, the big news (and worst-kept secret in town since I’ve been telling anyone that will listen) is about my new band! Long story short — after our Beatles Night at Carney’s in January, Sean Carney asked about a series of summer Beatles shows. Scheduling conflicts precluded this, so I suggested my Billy Joel band. Alas, this was also not to be, but now I was on the scent. Sean asked, “How about a set of Beatles then a set of Billy Joel?” DING! Pretending it was my idea, I replied, “How about one set of Beatles, one set of Billy Joel, one set of Bruce Springsteen and one set of Prince?” Several hundred phone calls, texts, Facebook messages and smoke signals later, I found a group of musicians just bonkers enough to join me. I’ll tell you more about these crazy idiots in the coming weeks, but wanted to get this out there. We start June 23 and play every Sunday until August 18th. I really can’t wait. Now we just need a band name. Sgt. Purple’s Italian Shuffle? The Raspberry Piano Freezeout in the Sky with Diamonds? Maybe just The Terry O’Brien Band. Unless any of you have a better suggestion. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow. (Great. Now I have a hangover.)

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
read with interest that the great and dreadful metropolis of New York City (or Gomorrah as I call it. No, wait that’s Wildwood) is introducing “congestion charging”. The idea is that people who wish to drive into the city — presumably to perform acts unsuitable for regular society (oh, no, once again I am thinking of Wildwood) — will be charged for the privilege. Personally I would pay to escape that den of iniquity, but each to their own. But the idea is sound, and so the secret Small Council of Cape May met last night to agree to introduce the same to Cape May. With, of course, our city’s trademark tweaks. As you all know, we specialize in taking a good, simple idea, and making it blisteringly complex and then adding extra layers of reckless detail, until we are the envy of the civilized world (and Ocean City) for a short period before it all collapses in chaos, recriminations and most often, fire. Witness our grand plan to have our very own Panama Canal, through which the riches of the world would flow. Thus far, that waterway has seen only a handful of
rowboats, some yachts and a speedboat of high rollers from Atlantic City, who were high as kites and looking for El Dorado. So, the basic plan is that every out-oftown motor vehicle will pay a cash sum of one king’s shilling (the amount if mandated by a rather old but strict law) to pass the city limits, on pain of musket fire. Obviously that is all and good, but will not swell the coffers quite as much as hoped. Thus, some additional variations on “congestion charging.” The most obvious and popular is the
Find Your Way Back...
“excess Shoebie charge”, based on sheer poundage. This is in no way discriminatory, but practical, and based on our limited real estate acreage. On top of which, there will be a “rapid movement charge”, whereby those smug grayhound-like visitors who spend little time eating or purchasing tat, but run around at high speed scaring small children and old people. From hence, visitors will be fitted with a motion tracker, and for every mile over ten per day, a charge will be levied. As a side note, and based on that most entertaining documentary, “Speed”, tour buses that visit will be fitted with a similar but more dramatic device that will deter unnecessary idling or slowing. Finally — and this is a masterstroke — construction is starting on a spectacular new thrill ride, The Cape May Centrifuge, which will be not only free, but mandatory. The ride will spin visitors at such speed that any loose items on their persons will tear free from pockets and bags, to be sifted and itemized. A test run netted $298 in loose coins, 98 credit cards, 109 rings, a few dozen strange body piercings, and several sets of dentures.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, celebrate Easter with a difference
eer may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Easter, but the ancient beverage has a strong connection to this spring celebration. Celebrate this connection with an Easter Kegg Hunt at Cold Spring Brewery. For 1500 years, monks in Europe have been brewing beer, both for their own needs and to raise money for the poor. Over the centuries, they mastered the art of brewing, and created special beers for special seasons. Paulaner monks in Bavaria brewed a beer so substantial that it could be used in place of food. For the six weeks of Lent — the pre-Easter season of sacrifice — these monks abstained from solid food and drank four beers every day, and five on Sunday. Because their beer was hearty enough to be considered “liquid bread,” the monks suffered no ill effects. Their beer was sweeter and lower in alcohol than beer made with modern brewing methods, so they were likely imbibing 1000 calories of carbohydrates daily, with a bit of protein, potassium, magnesium and
B vitamins. Legend says they felt guilty for their easy Lent, so they sent a keg of their beer to the Pope for confirmation that they were denying themselves sufficiently. Apparently, the beer spoiled on the journey to Rome, and the Pope assured the monks that their beer diet was indeed a sacrifice. Some modern Christians turn this tradition on its head and abstain from beer during Lent, and so serve beer with Easter dinner, which is often lamb or ham, two meats that pair particularly well with beer. The Easter Kegg Hunt is a sort of scavenger hunt held at the Cold Spring Brewery on
Saturday, April 20 from 12 to 8. For this free event, you start at the tasting room and ask a server for your answer sheet. Follow the directions to explore Historic Cold Spring Village for eggs. Each egg contains a clue to finding the next egg. At the end, you put your answers inside the Easter Kegg. One winner will be drawn from among the correct answers. The winner will receive a Cold Spring Brewery Growler. Visit hcsv.org for more information. You can also hunt for adventure at Congress Hall, which offers Wilderness Adventures for guests, with activities like Tree Printing and Slime Making. Visit caperesorts.com. If you’re seeking a more traditional Easter activity, there’s the free Kiwanis Annual Easter Egg Hunt for kids up to age 10 on Saturday, April 20, at 10:00am at Cape May City Elementary School. Willow Creek Wintery also offers an Easter Egg Hunt in their Alice in Wonderland Garden on Easter Sunday at noon. Also on Easter, there’s the traditional Easter Fashion Stroll at Rotary Park. Registration begins at noon, and the stroll begins at 1.

I
magine a story 500 million years in the making, complete with captivating wildlife, strange archeology and aerial shots that swoop subterranean. You can see all this untouched beauty in a stunning feature film on Saturday night during the 19th Annual Cape May Film Festival, April 27, at West Cape May Borough Hall. The film is Decoding the Driftless, and it is an unbelievable site to behold. For the past three years, the Cape May Film Society has focused on conservation. Nature is such an integral part of life in this region it’s no surprise we take this so seriously. We have a national refuge in our midst — in Wildwood Crest at the US Fish and Wildlife Refuge. For as long as we’ve been screening these nature films, this one has been the most captivating of them all. The opening scene is breathtaking, and from there the views only get more vibrant. This geography is untouched by glaciers, and until this film was made very little was known about these areas. Truly the filmmakers, who provided detailed notes for our
Q&A afterward, are deeply committed to the natural world around us... and around you here in Cape May. Their purpose is to educate so these places don’t go away for our children and grandchildren. These largely untraveled areas hold secrets underground so unique you may not believe what you’re seeing. From the films producers we get this description: “This film is a wild ride of adventure through the air, across rugged landscapes, on and under the water, through a secret underworld, and across time itself to
explore and decipher ancient clues of archaeology, paleontology, geology, and biology of the Driftless Region, with its captivating scenic beauty. Learn why one region, in the heart of America, is the only ‘island driftless region’ in the world.” Emmy Award-winning filmmakers George Howe and Tim Jacobson of Sustainable Driftless and Rob Nelson of Untamed Science produced this feature-length film on the amazing origins, diversity, and resources of the Driftless Region. The team also includes Swedish filmmaker Jonas Stenstrom of Untamed Science, and six-time Emmywinning wildlife cinematographer Neil Rettig. The crew delivers extremely rare footage of natural phenomena and scenic beauty in the Driftless in ways never seen before! Our journey will take us to four states: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois to uncover ancient mysteries, endangered IceAge throwbacks, and globally rare ecosystems as you experience this wonderful film. The evening will start at 7pm (film starts at 8:00) at the West Cape May Borough Hall.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My best friend has a new girlfriend, whom I do not like — at all. I’m very upset about it. He and I did everything together and now she constantly interjects herself into our friendship — including inviting herself to join our weekly golf outing. Which would be fine, I guess, if she could play. But she can’t, though she thinks she can and asks for gimmes (“Give me a pass” at actually putting the ball into the hole) on every putt. Naturally, he gets upset when I complain. He thinks all of this is “cute.” What do I do? — Third Wheel Dear Wheel Ride it out. Either their relationship will settle into a more normal pattern or they will drift apart. You already realize how counterproductive it is to voice your
Wise answers to perplexing questions
resentment. Pushing your friend into a corner in which he must choose you or his new love is a loser. And you may have to come to terms with the fact that your friendship will never be quite the same if the new love is controlling and decides he shouldn’t have any one but her. You might want to try bringing another player into the mix and make it a foursome. Try asking your friend out to the Ugly Mug for a beer. Even if she meets you there later, it will give you at least some time together.
Dear Answer Lady My brother-in-law asked my wife and I to host my sister’s 40th birthday party in OUR house. So unfair. We’re in a no-win. If I say no, I look like the uncaring brother. If I agree, it’s a boatload of work. We’re looking at a guest list of 40-plus. And knowing him, he’ll expect us to pay for it. We’re in business and the whole family thinks we are rich. We are not. When I asked him why he didn’t ask my parents to do this, he said, “It’s too much for them.” Too much? Are you kidding? We have three children and a business. What do I do? — Unwilling Party Planner Dear Unwilling First off, talk to your parents. You can surely expect them to help you financially, if they are able. Secondly, pick a neutral location like Harpoons on the Bay or the Filling Station. Agree to the party and split the bill between you, your brother-in-law and your parents. No need to kill yourselves preparing the house, the lawn and the patio for guests. The chef will worry about the menu and you can all enjoy your sister’s big birthday.

Bird Droppings
E
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ven before setting out, co-leader Karen, a CMBO Associate Naturalist, let it be known that priority one on this Monday Morning South Cape May Meadows walk was the Sedge Wren. Apparently one had been discovered the day before in the southeast corner of the Meadows. Chances were it was still there and would constitute a Life Bird for some members of our group, a Cape May County record for others and a Year Bird for all. One of the sub-games in birding is how you sort and package the birds you find. Accordingly, a bird you have never seen before, a Life Bird, assumes enhanced value. Me? I’m not much on bookkeeping, but I do enjoy seeing (and hearing) birds that are uncommonly encountered. This paucity factor makes even birds as bland as Sedge Wren highly desirable. A Sedge Wren, for those of you now driven into a frenzy of erudition, is a tiny, buff-colored, grass-skulking phantom that breeds widely across central North America but rarely in New Jersey, where the species win-
ters in small numbers at mostly at the edge of tidal marsh. So secretive are the birds that even in heavily birded areas like Cape May, they may remain undetected until spring temperatures drive them to song, a staccato chatter preceded by a sharp chip or three. So intent was Karen upon her prize that she suggested reversing the route so we’d arrive more quickly to the bird’s reported position. But, presuming the bird had not departed, I concluded that its penchant for song would be as persistent at the end of the
walk as the beginning. Luckily for me this proved to be the case. We were further aided in our effort by CMBO Director, David La Puma, aka Sedge Wren Finder who kindly pinpointed the exact location of the bird which was singing and even showing itself about 30 feet off the dog leg, up near the dunes. So obliging was the bird that some were even treated to scope views. The Cattle Egret found near the end of the walk was added value to an already successful walk. Once common in the county, the bird no longer breeds locally. Distinguished from Snowy Egret by its orange bill, this mostly terrestrial heron is a testimony to the mercurial nature of bird populations. They rise and fall, ebb and flow. So anyone up for a Wren Quest? Bring your high expectations and have a pure heart. Consolation Prize: Cattle Egret? Main pool end of north end of East Path on the left. Or you can wait until next Monday’s walk, 7:30 South Cape May parking lot, when we’ll all try again. And who knows what new discoveries await? It’s why birders get up every morning.
Another Happy Client... “The service is great! The stylists are warm and inviting, making everyone feel welcome. The stylists were attentive to customer feedback and did a beautiful job with dye, cuts and styling. We were very impressed with the knowledgeable staff and commitment to service. MYSTIC is a handsome, 2 year old boy who arrived at the shelter confused and forlorn. He has blossomed into a dog who loves human companionship and eagerly looks forward to his time outside the kennel. He loves to snuggle with his humans and will even climb into laps if offered! Give this affectionate pup a loving home and adopt!
PRINCE is a labrador retriever and boxer mix who recently came to the shelter as a stray. He is friendly and loves to run freely in the playyard. Prince is healthy and clearly lived with a family, however, there is no history to report whether he lived with children or other pets. Prince appears to be dog friendly and is definitely good with people. Adopt!

NORMAN was brought into the shelter as a stray and has quickly made his presence known through his happy personality. He loves running in the yard and chasing toys, although he hasn’t quite gotten the idea of returning them! Norman needs a family that will give him some “tender loving care” and continue his training. Adopt today!

KING TUT is regal and fascinating just like his namesake. He was found with his brother Ramsesses, while wandering around a colony. They have lost their home, their family, everything. So here at this late stage of their lives they start anew. Could you be the new family that King Tut deserves? If so, stop by the shelter and adopt today!
MUFFY knows he is not really a Scottish Fold, but his ears are permanently folded. It might have been from bad ears his whole life, but Muffy still has that cute effect doesn’t he? And the best part is that he is one lovey cat. So if you don’t fall for his “pedigree,” he can melt you with his heart! Because nothing will keep you warmer than this Muffy’s love!
SALENGER the Great! What makes him so great you ask? The stories that he can tell. He tells of a playful lion that will stalk the rolling ball of terror. He tells of a blanket that will keep your lap warm on the cold nights. But most of all he tells the story of a family to share in his great adventures especially in the one that he can’t wait to call home!
