Feasting On History Gala Last Tuesday, Historic Cold Spring Village kicked off the 2019 season with its 19th annual gala. Held at Naval Air Station Wildwood, the event bring hundreds of guests together to dine, buffet style, on a smorgasbord of offerings from Cape May County restaurants and food trucks as well as wineries, breweries and distilleries. This year, proceeds will benefit repairs to a home on Village grounds once owned by the family of Jacob Spicer, who published the “Concessions & Agreements” document which established freedom of religion, freedom of speech, trial by jury and other rights for New Jerseyians.

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

About the size of a thumb, sand crabs are clawless and can move only backwards. You can find them burrowed into the sand by the water’s edge in Cape May. They’ll stick out just their eyes and their antennae, and when a receding wave passes over them, they’ll unwind a second-pair of antennae and use it to scoop plankton from the sea to eat. Sand crabs can also swim and, weird for a crab, tread water.

Once upon a time, the oyster capital of the world could be found 23 miles northwest of Cape May, as the crow flies. This was 100 years ago, when Port Norris -- located where Maurice River meets Delaware Bay -- was homebase for a thriving maritime industry. In the 1950s, disaster struck when an oyster disease devastated the population. But today, thanks to a long-term collaboration between marine scientists and commercial fishermen, the small bivalve is making a big comeback in Cape May’s waters. Cape May Salt Oysters, which begin in a hatchery before being raised in the wild, are sweet, briny, and the most delectable treat on a breezy Cape May afternoon.

Furious Hours: Murder, Fraud and the Last Trial of Harper Lee, by Casey Cep After a preacher allegedly murdered his family, he was shot dead. Harper Lee, author of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” wrote about the case in a nonfiction book that never published. This is a page-turning look into that investigation.

Bartender Of The Week This week, Billy Scott from The Rusty Nail is up. How long have you been bartending? Five years. Favorite drink to make? A Mezcal Margarita. What’s your bartending pet peeve? Waving! It’s simply bad form. The worst is when a customer waves you down then turns to the group to see what they want. As I learned in Boy Scouts 20 years ago, “be prepared.” Dream job? Pro surfer.

Spring is Here!

Place: The Boiler Room Chef: Dylan Rutherford Signature dish: Prosciutto Arugula Pizza. “It’s a true classic among pizza lovers. I love the simple wood fired margherita pizza, however when a salty 18 month aged prosciutto di parma is added on top with peppery Beach Plum Farm arugula, it doesn’t get much better than this. Hint: Ask for Bulgarian feta cheese on top!”

Wine Of The Week Joe Canal’s Discount Liquor Store Ca’Furlan Prosecco- $9.99 A Prosecco for the Champagne drinker! Very low on the sweetness scale for an Extra Dry Prosecco. Color is light straw and the nose has some refreshing floral notes and almost a hint of pineapple. Nice acidity on the finish.

The Exit Zero Filling Station Ambush Come get gas at our place and you might just get lucky!

It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places — from $3 off fudge to $15 off dinner. It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into Rose Boniello from Ridgewood, NJ who was on her way back home after filling up. We asked her to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. She picked out a $10 discount for Tisha’s on Washington Street Mall. Who would she like to share this with? Her daughter Christina.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

appy week of May 16th, everyone! Such a special time of year, where one gathers their kin around the fire to recount tales of past weeks of May 16th, which are then passed down to the next generation in glorious tradition. My favorite week of May 16th occurred in the year 1997. Watched a ball game, went to a movie, ate some food. It was the most amazing week of May 16th I’ve ever experienced. Glorious stuff. (Can you tell I don’t have much to write about this week? But my voracious readership DEMANDS content, so here we are…) High Compliment of the Week: While closing up Exit Zero Filling Station I put on the Squeeze Pandora station. “Up the Junction” came on and bartender Sean Hagerty gave me a look. “What?” I asked. He shook his head, “How do you not hear you right now?” I blushed at having my voice in any way favorably compared to that of Glenn Tilbrook, and a Squeeze tribute band remains the dream, I’m just not sure I’ll find a club willing to book a Squeeze tribute band. Perhaps in combina-

tion with a few other 80s British new wave acts like, say, The Cure, Elvis Costello, The Clash, hmmm… Stay tuned! Speaking of music (I am nothing if not adept at segues), I made a little of it this past weekend. But enough about my sex life. (Zing!) Saturday I sang at a wedding in Kinnelon, NJ with Strangers/ Love Me Dudes keyboardist Sue Polcer. Where is Kinnelon, you might ask? I might answer, Kinnelon is in northern north Jersey, past Canada, at the top of a mountain that sits atop a taller mountain, a taller mountain bearded with Middle

Earth-type walking trees with a few rudimentary paths carved out for travel. I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of several lost Inuit tribes lest I break the Prime Directive. But I can tell you the ceremony occurred at Smoke Ring Rise and was beautiful. And that I now understand why Sue is always so grumpy when she comes down here 16 times a month for gigs. That drive sucks. But it was for a good cause and they paid me a lot of money to be there, so win-win. On Sunday, O’Brien & Joyce loaded into the Rusty Nail on pontoons and played a soggy Mother’s Day gig for a crowd of hundreds! Okay, dozens. Okay, 14. Still, there were worse ways to spend a Sunday, and the folks who did brave the elements seemed to enjoy our music, which ranges from 70s Easy Listening to Late 70s Easy Listening. But we did break out a few “new” songs this week, including “Copperline” by James Taylor and “Sons & Daughters” by The Decembrists. These songs were met with a lot of blank stares, and if people don’t start applauding and enjoying these little obscurities I’ll

be left with nothing but 10,000 more repetitions of “Brown Eyed Girl.” You wouldn’t wish that on a guy, wouldja? Regardless, we always enjoy playing the Nail, good weather or bad, inside or out, busy or sparse, Sunday or Monday… you get the idea. Thank you, Dana Bezaire. Fatal Mistake of the Week: If you notice a little more flavor, a little more zing in the magazine this week, it’s because EZ honcho Jack Wright is out of the country (and stay out!) and has allowed me (ME!) to edit this week’s issue. So if you notice more dick and fart jokes than usual in this week’s Answer Lady, Bird Droppings, and Activities columns, you’ll know why. But not The Old Fogey. I’d never touch that gem. (Though I will take credit for the “oodles of oodles” line.) Patron Saint of the Week: Exit Zero Girl Friday Katie Repici, for not hurling a blunt object at me every time I yelled, “Katie! How does this work?” while editing this week’s issue. My man Shane Boyd, late of Congress Hall, made an appearance at the Filling Station, looking much thicker than last we met. Thick meaning muscular, not thick meaning “thicc.” He attributed this to his new life as a scalloper, hauling those cages in and out of the water. Says he works about 90 days a year and makes three times what he used to and now I don’t like him anymore. (Congratulations on the twins, Shane! I know you and Stefanie went through a lot to get here. Much love.) Side Note: I’ve typed the word “appearance” probably 12,000 times in my life and have spelled it “appearence” all 12,000 times. Cape Island Gardens seems pretty proud of their sign declaring 65,432 ¼ plants in rear, but, first of all, ouch. Second of all, I’ve been delivering Exit Zero there since last fall and have never seen this supposed ¼ plant nor can I prove its existence. Look for next week’s special investigation into Plantgate. Side Note II: I’ve typed the

May 16, 2019 word “existence” probably 8,000 times in my life and have spelled it “existance” all 8,000 times. I dropped off my usual 5 copies of EZ to Cape Bookkeeping in N. Cape May with my usual effusive ebullience, which was met with dour contempt by my accountant, Karen Mirable. Why so grumpy? I wondered. I then gave her the old rub-myfingers-together bit asking if I’d paid her yet for her (quite excellent) tax services. She shook her head slowly and mouth the word “no” with such dripping disdain I had to take a step back. Ok, so all of that is fiction. Except my effusive ebullience. And her excellence as a bookkeeper. And me owing her money. Just… hire her is what I’m saying. (I’ll bring a check this week, Karen. Honest.) Side Note III: I’ve typed the word “ebullience” 3 times in my life and have spelled it “ebulliance” all 3 times. Glass Houses of the Week (Non-Billy Joel Division): I get that you can’t please everyone all the time, and that chasing down a negative Yelp or TripAdvisor review (especially one regarding a play you spent a year writing, but I digress) is generally a waste of time and numbs the soul, but I found it a little rich that Herald reporter Rachel Shubin complained publicly (Facebook, where else?) about the cost of her visit to EZFS considering the price of a ¼ page ad in her paper could feed a family of four for a month. Maybe a private message or email next time. Then you won’t get roasted in The Undertow. KISH! (Breaking glass.) Enjoy this calm before the Memorial Day storm and be sure to sign up for the Beatles Open Mic at Carney’s on Monday, 5/27, 3-7, hosted by Love Me Dudes. I’ve started an event page on Facebook where you can peruse the song list and claim a couple of tunes to sing or play with the band. This is how our Beatles Nights started way back in 2013 and we look forward to sharing the stage with all of you. Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

H

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ere are some things that are banned from Cape May this summer season. The list is in no particular order, and the single defining characteristic of entries is that they will make our city safer, less odorous, and more esthetically pleasing. (1) Chimpanzees. Especially those riding tricycles. They are savage beasts, and since the release of that docu-drama, Planet of the Apes, are keen to take over the world. (2) Clowns. Actual clowns, as opposed to clownish visitors, and year-round residents with clownish tendencies. Clowns on tricycles are doubly unwelcome, as they are able to squirt people in the face with water from a fake lapel flower, and then cycle away at speed. (3) Tricycles. No good ever came of a person on a three-wheeled bicycle. I saw The Shining many years ago, and have never quite gotten over it. To that, “creepy twins” are banned. Also, did you know that the single biggest cause of death in the over-70 population is the humble tricycle? 90 per cent of such fatalities come from small children and

childish adults riding tricycles. The remaining ten per cent from nostalgic old people trying to ride a tricycle. Take the great “Elderly Lemmings” episode of 1934: some 287 old people out for a ride on their trikes perished when their leader suffered a “senior moment” and pedaled off the Point into the ocean, the other 286 gleefully following. The artificial reef caused by the submerged machines was in the end a good thing for marine life, if a little morbid. (4) Box lunches. Anyone seen opening a

Find Your Way Back...

Tupperware container or neatly folded aluminum package will be ejected without mercy. (5) People with no abdominal muscles on the beach. I am sorry, but we have standards. I will personally patrol the beach with a set of medical pincers, with which to examine abs on a case by case basis. It’s an arduous task, but I am willing to endure it. (6) People who do not carry a copy of Exit Zero. This will be remedied by our inspectors, who will all carry copies of this rag folded in the manner of “The Millwall brick”, with which to strike offenders. (7) Fans of blended whisky who are over 22 years old. A year is usually enough for a young person to learn the delights of a single malt. Infractions will be met with a full shot glass of Macallan, to teach a gentle lesson. (8) Dogs without “oodle” as part of their breed name. It is nothing personal, but our detailed studies have shown that people willing to spend more on a canine than a used car, are more likely to spend extravagantly when staying in town. We encourage oodles of oodles.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, running fun

unning is an efficient way to get your exercise. You need little in the way of equipment, say, a reliable pair of sneakers or two, little training and you can make your own schedule. On the down side, the things that make running convenient can also make it lonely. That’s where a race comes in. Races offer a sense of community, even for beginners. You don’t have to run races to be considered a serious runner, but you also don’t have to be a serious runner to run races. You can join the running community at any level, and the people you meet at your first race may become good friends. Some participants may be in a solitary mood, but runners in general are a friendly bunch, especially if you’re behind them! You’ll laugh with strangers at funny costumes or tee shirt slogans, like, “I’ll give you a dollar not to pass me” or “I’m just here to make you look faster.” Critique the tee shirts traditionally given to runners who pre-register. “Shop” the gadgets, shoes and outfits you see around you. Share sunscreen, body glide and play-

lists. Commiserate over less than stellar conditions, like rain or heat, and explore the swag bag offerings. You’ll only be as solitary as you want to be. Cape May has several races coming up, including the brand new “Cape May Tech 5K Fun Run and 1 Mile Walk” on May 18 at 9:00 a.m. at Cape May County Technical High School, 188 Crest Haven Road in Cape May Court House. The cost is $25 on race day for the 5K and $15 for the walk. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. on race day. The “Aviation Museum Runway 10k, 5k

and Fun Walk,” also on May 18, is a unique opportunity to run on an actual runway still used by planes. The race finishes INSIDE the museum. (There’s a strict 75 minute time limit, so slower runners will have to detour). Registration is $35 for the 5K, $45 for the 10K, and $15 for the Walk. Registration ends May 16, 2019. Race day registration begins at 7 a.m. The event benefits the restoration efforts of the Naval Air Station Wildwood (NASW) Aviation Museum’s Hangar #1, where last week’s annual Feasting on History gala was held. There will be music, beer, bagels, water, fruits, and other refreshments post-race. On May 26, you can join the annual “Claire Brodesser Memorial 5K Run/1M Walk” at Beachcomber Camping Resort at 462 Seashore Road. Sign-in begins at 8:15. Proceeds benefit Cape Regional Medical Center. If you’re not camping with them, park near the front gate, then go into the store to register ($15 dollars) and be directed where to park. Race organizers remind you to “dress for the weather and wear comfy shoes!”

The Movie Column

I

t didn’t take long for reaction to Avengers: Endgame to come in. With a movie this epic, it seems appropriate to cover it in two separate, spoiler-free columns. Mary, who serves up one of the best diner breakfasts, was one of the few people who didn’t like the movie. “It needed more action,” she said. “It was boring—honestly, I slept a little. It did not live up to the hype.” She leaned in and whispered this next line, as if it’s a spoiler (it’s not). She said, “I understand the ending and why everything went down the way it did, but it dragged.” Aly wasn’t thrilled with “all that went down” (to borrow from Mary) at the end. One thing she particularly appreciated though was the show of “girl power” when many of the heroines joined forces to do battle. “Loved that,” she said. She also found many parts of the film that moved her deeply — something I struggled to find despite loving the film. Sean has reacted to my comment about Stan Lee creating something on the magni-

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

tude of the Star Wars franchise. “Actually,” he said, “Marvel is one notch better.” This coming from a Star Wars follower is big news. Was Sean betraying his beloved “May the fourth” fellow fans? “Marvel Universe is the Star Wars of our generation,” the millennial says, indicating that Marvel is the not the new kid in town but new king of the hill! The box office seems to agree with recent Marvel films surpassing ticket sales of competing Star Wars installments. Does it matter when

both are owned by Disney? Or is there something to be said about the two getting the creative and cash support of the entertainment giant. “And the set up between the two is very different,” Sean continues. “Star Wars had its initial first three episodes back in the 1970s and 80s, and the prequels and sequels came from that first set of films. Marvel draws in multiple sets of characters and storylines that work together, but can also get back to their own franchises. It really is a universe of ideas.” The film showed growth, says Jacquie. “This is not standard superhero film with gratuitous action and violence,” she said. “This installment showed growth... like some of the characters did. The characters matured in this movie—and the franchise did too. The women coming together at a critical part of the movie was a real demonstration of that maturity.” Avery gets the last word: “Best film ever made.” He’s seen it four times...and counting.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Please tell me what how you tell someone politely to shut up. I am the mother of five children and life is pretty hectic on a daily basis. My mother-in-law sprung for a facial and I was so ready for this. The music was soothing, the room lovely. I was just starting to relax when the masseuse started talking and talking and talking about her obviously boring life with her cat. By the time it was over, I literally had to keep myself from running out of the place! Was there anyway to handle this other than to suffer in silence? I couldn’t wait to get back to my five screaming kids. – No Oooohhhm Moment Here Dear Ooohhhmm You were indeed a captive audience. A sharp rebuke could have resulted in a not so smooth facial, so tension was going to be pres-

Wise answers to perplexing questions

ent anyway, but you could have told her you are mediating and appreciate the chatter but need the silence more. You certainly should issue a formal complaint to the owner or manager informing them that you will never return nor tell anyone else to patronize them. Therein lies your power, albeit after the fact. Meanwhile tell your family you would like to try Cape May Day Spa’s Balancing Facial should put your chi back in sync. Dear Answer Lady I gave my girlfriend what I thought was a

beautiful. and I might add, expensive, bracelet for her birthday. She looked at it and asked me where I bought it. I asked her why and she said she’d like to return it and get “something that is my taste, honey.” I’m pretty hot about this. I think her reaction was rude and unacceptable. I am darn near breaking up with her over it. Am I overreacting? - Taken for Granted Guy Dear Taken for Granted This sounds like it is about a lot more than just a bracelet. What you say is true, but she may have thought your relationship was “comfortable” enough that she could be “truthful.” On the other hand, if she is this abrasive about everything – that can be a problem. The Answer Lady thinks the latter is true, otherwise, why go from a bracelet to a break up? This is where you need to focus your attention. Do you really love this woman? Take a breather and think about what is really bugging you. To help you relax, visit the newly-renovated Brown Room. Have a cocktail, sit out on a rocker with the ocean and the sunset in clear sight and follow your heart.

Bird Droppings

E

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

very Spring I pick a bird whose arrival marks the official onset of Spring. This year it’s a stunner; Prairie Warbler, an uncomm bird that is, fortunately, common to our area. Small and dumpling shaped, this mostly yellow warbler is equipped with a tail that, feeding or singing, is ever twitching, making it one of our three tail wagging species, with the Palm Warbler and endangered Kirtland’s Warbler, a bird never officially recorded in Cape May. Audubon claimed never to have heard the bird sing, which is unfortunate for him: the bird’s buzzy, rising notes render it instantly recognizable. Zoo, zoo, zree! The song that first alerted me to the bird’s presence. Audubon can be forgiven his ornithological lapse; in his time Prairie Warbler was a rare bird. It was the felling of the eastern deciduous forests and successional recovery that led to the bird’s proliferation. Now, there is scarcely a south Jersey field that does not host a pair. Here they will stay, raising

one or two broods, before retreating to the West Indies for a winter layover. The birds are often found in the same habitat as Yellow Warbler, from which Prairie can be distinguished by it’s black spectacles, streaked sides and, if you are very close, rufous streaks on its back. Also, Yellow Warbler is not a tail wagger. But if you are in Prairie Warbler habitat, be on the lookout for Blue Grosbeak and Yellow-breasted Chat, two more common breeders hereabouts.

The fields of Higbee Beach are probably the best place to search for all three species and, if you don’t trust your ears, a CMBO field trip will virtually assure you a look. But don’t dawdle. Spring is ephemeral. The birds are in full song now as they establish breeding territories to win a mate. Once they get the girl, birds limit their vocalizations to morning and evening hours. Prairie Warbler is a real looker, one Western birders would cross the continent to see. Lucky you to be in a location where they are common. Audubon would envy you. So dedicate an hour or two to savoring a bird that enriches the dowery that is every Cape May resident’s birthright. Challenge yourself to track down the warbler whose song seems to climb the ladder: Zoo, zoo, zree! Yellow Warbler goes Sweet, sweet, oh-so sweet! Blue Grosbeak is a rich Warble. Yellow-breasted Chat makes a cacophony of toots and whistles. Prairie Warbler sometime sings from under cover. Be patient and you will be rewared. Use your cell to become familiar with its song.

MAX is a high energy young dog. He lived with children and 2 cats. A slow and appropriate introduction to resident cats and even another dog could yield a positive outcome. Max loves to run in the yard and he has good leash skills for taking nice walks. He needs an active owner who has the time and energy to devote to him. Adopt this cutie today!

PRINCE is a labrador retriever and boxer mix who recently came to the shelter as a stray. He is friendly and loves to run freely in the playyard. Prince is healthy and clearly lived with a family, however, there is no history to report whether he lived with children or other pets. Prince appears to be dog friendly and is definitely good with people. Adopt!

BUBBA would love a great retirement home where he can relax, purr, love, eat, sleep and keep you company. Bubba doesn’t have a mean bone in his body so making him great with visitors and grand kids. He is in very good health for an older guy and is very clean. Bubba also doesn’t eat too much so he won’t cost you too much either! Adopt!

LEVI is a beautiful big male, but don’t let that fool you. He is a working male. Levi’s early years were spent outside surviving the rough and tumble ways of the alley cat. Now Levi would like to spend his days lounging in a warm cozy home. So if you’re looking for a hearty male, then come on by and meet Levi. He deserves all the love in the world!

PUMPKIN is the perfect companion cat. She will sleep with you, sit on your lap and purr to you with love. Her owner of six years needed to find a home for her and gave Pumpkin to his mother. Well, they didn’t tell her there was another cat! So she had to give Pumpkin to the shelter. So if you’re looking for one special kitty, adopt this Pumpkin!

“Ed was an excellent find and resource, especially in the beginning of our purchasing process. He is fully versed in the geographical and cultural aspects of the areas he represents. He was always available and reachable as our search times were limited (out-of-state buyers) and presented properties that met our criteria and price range. We managed to accomplish our goal in a short period of time and Ed was a critical contributor from start to finish. Not only is Ed a respectable Real Estate agent, he is also a gentleman.” — mark and eileen CAROL A. 202 Yale Avenue, Cape May Point Spacious Cape May Point Home. Perfectly set up for entertaining friends and family in the generous great room with a fireplace. The great room is completely open to the large dining area and kitchen. Vaulted ceilings and plenty of windows open the areas to sunlight and fresh ocean air. The house has 4 bedrooms and 2 and a half baths (including the very large Master bedroom and full bath). There are 2 sizable decks, one off the great room and one at the roof level. Both are perfect for morning coffee, enjoying the sun all day or just catching the sunset after a day at the beach. A new 50 year roof has been installed and the warranty is transferable to the buyers. The floored attic has plenty of storage space. Additionally, there is a large area in the crawl space for kayaks and surfboards and a perfect storage space for bikes and chairs next to the outside shower. Just two short blocks to the beach. In addition to being a fabulous home to enjoy in all seasons, this would be an excellent summer rental. Presented by Andrea Moffatt $799,000
