SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

The leafy sea dragon looks like what would happen if a seahorse and a plant had a baby. These guys, who grow up to 13.8 inches, blend in with the seaweed they live amongst, which may help them stay safe from predators (though it’s not known who eats them). Males have a spongy patch under the tail where females deposit their eggs -- that’s right, males bear the babies. Divers, unfortunately, often take leafy sea dragons as pets.

Yes, Cape May really IS an island. Originally, the present-day area of Cape May City was cut off from the rest of the mainland by a small creek -- aka, Cape Island Creek. Contrary to popular belief, this waterway is still in tact, save for a small portion where the city borders Lower Township. But even without the creek, Cape May is an island. That’s because, during World War II, the Army Corp of Engineers created a canal connecting Cape May’s harbor with the Delaware Bay in order to improve military operations for the Navy. This man-made waterway is what you drive over when you come over the bridge for a relaxing, rejuvenating stay on the Cape.

Furious Hours: Salt: A World History, by Mark Kurlansky How can a book about the humble thing you sprinkle on your eggs be fascinating? Just trust us on this -- Kurlansky makes the argument that salt has shaped civilization, citing political, scientific and religious records, and it is truly compelling.

Ramblings From The Editors

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Diane Stopyra

ape May is our happy place and this is usually a particularly happy weekend — the unofficial kickoff to summer. Typically, we’d devote these column inches to Memorial Day happenings. But something tragic happened last Saturday that should be addressed. While biking on Broadway near Yorke Avenue in West Cape May, Efterpi Hines, a 56-year-old resident of Cranbury, New Jersey, was hit by a New Jersey Transit bus. She died of her injuries. We don’t know much yet, including who’s at fault. We called Chief Tony Marino of Cape May Police Department but he wasn’t able to divulge much or speculate about what happened. CMPD’s investigation is still open, and these detectives are working alongside the NJ State Police and New Jersey Transit. What we DO know? This tragic incident highlights a scary reality of life on the island: Cape May isn’t as bike-friendly

as we’d like it to be. Fortunately, there are efforts underway to make it more so. In June of 2017, in a 5-0 decision, city council voted to establish a Bike and Pedestrian Advisory Committee. Since then, this group has spearheaded efforts like a new, free jitney service that will help reduce the number of cars on the road. This week, having collaborated with each municipality, they are also releasing a color-coded map of safest bike routes on the island. Broadway is designated “yellow” on this map, meaning it’s not the worst place to pedal [red] and not the best [green]. While the street has bike lanes and sharrows, parked cars can block these sharrows, so bicyclists are forced to enter the roadway. Eventually, the goal is to earn Cape May the title of Bike Friendly Community, a national designation that will require a great deal of change and years of effort. We chatted with Tricia Hendricks, deputy mayor and liaison for the committee, who

told us representatives from Ocean City, already a bike-friendly community, are impressed with the “tremendous inroads” we’ve made in the last two years and that, although the process will be rigorous, “as long as we’re committed, we’re on track to receive the designation.” Last weekend’s tragedy might just supercharge that progress. Carol Sabo, West Cape May mayor who lives two blocks from where the crash occurred, has already reached out to the city engineer about the possibility of reducing the speed limit on Broadway from 30 to 25. In the meantime, the best we can do, Chief Marino told us, is to critically evaluate our abilities before navigating the road — on two wheels or four. “Sometimes people on vacation don’t want to take their car, but it’s been a while since they’ve ridden a bicycle,” he said. “Likewise, drivers here might not be used to city-like traffic. It’s important to be aware.” Happy holiday weekend. Stay safe.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. This time around, we didn’t actually go to a restaurant. Hey, we like to mix it up now and again. The place: The lovely island home of Jordan Rowan, general manager of The Virginia hotel on Jackson Street, and Gabi Urda, super-talented local photographer. It was the first birthday party of their daughter, Lilo. (Gabi and Lilo turned up in the same outfit — how embarrassing!) The food: Hoagies and veggie trays and potato salad and guacamole and chips and fruit with fruit dip — oh my! Plus adorable cupcakes and doughnuts for dessert. Is this how all baby parties are? Sign us up! The shirt: Jimmy Zeitler, sales associate with Jersey Cape Realty, arrive by bike in an eggplant T-shirt — as in, printed with the picture of an actual eggplant, not just eggplant-colored. His wife, Laura, with whom he owns The Columbia House on Ocean Street, cited the sexual connotation of the vegetable in emoji speak, and said the shirt would be “mysteriously disappearing” soon. The run-ins: We also saw Maxwell Moran, graphic designer for Cape Resorts, and his precious, one-month old baby, Avery. Her carrier was sporting a “Stay away — you’ve got germs!” sign, and you know what? We DO have germs and we do not blame you one bit. Curtis Bashaw, head honcho of Cape Resorts, turned up, too, but couldn’t stay long since he was on his way to the Hamptons where his company operates the Baron’s Cove hotel in Sag Harbor. The proud grandparents: Ken Rowan, international pilot with Delta Air Lines, and Viviane Rowan, interior designer who owns the beautiful shop White on Hughes Street. They spend much of the offseason at their second home in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, which is super annoying mostly because we can’t do the same. The final word: Happy birthday to Lilo! As for the rest of you: Maybe check with your spouse before purchasing produce-related attire.

Bartender Of The Week This week, Jason Palombaro from Cabanas is up. How long have you been bartending? 26 years. Favorite drink to make? A Jameson neat because it’s efficient. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers ask for water when I’m slammed. Because it’s still a drink to be made that people rarely ever tip on, especially wedding parties! Dream job? A nurse.

The Signature Dish Place: Aleathea’s Chef: Tai Menz Signature dish: Sesame coated Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl served rare. “It’s my favorite thing to eat after a long day on the water. We serve it over wakame seaweed salad, diced Jersey tomatoes, cucumbers, mango slaw and avocados. It’s simple, filling and cool on hot summer days.

Wine Of The Week Collier’s Liquor Store Pendulum Cabernet Sauvignon - $17.99 Alluring aromatics of black pepper, charred oak and dark berries, cherry, red apple and sweet fresh tobacco on the palate. The Exit Zero Filling Station Ambush Come get gas at our place and you might just get lucky!

It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places — from $3 off fudge to $15 off dinner. It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into Berny Gamble from Cape May who was on her way to Beach Plum Farm. We asked her to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. She picked out a $10 discount for the Exit Zero Filling Station! Who would she like to share this with? Her hubby Harry and George Clooney. Haha nice choice!

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

ou’ll have to pardon my sardonic cynicism of the last couple of weeks; I binge-watched all nine seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm and now view everything through the prism of Larry David. So far it’s gone pretty good. Pretty… pretty good. If you are an establishment that usually stocks Exit Zero magazine and you had a little trouble finding your copies this week, it’s because your intrepid delivery man did not bring plastic bags with him and it was raining, so he had to get a little creative in finding dry places to leave them. Think of it as a fun, Exit Zero Easter Egg Hunt! But with magazines! Yeah, that’s it. Also, ask your neighbors — I left a bunch at Seaside Cheese and Kasey’s Canine Kastle. And I, uh, didn’t forget to bring plastic bags. Not at all. I was, uh, making a statement. An environmental statement, man. Don’t you people ever think of the planet? Luckily, one of us was. I’ve had a few encounters with Birding Weirdo Tom “Big Sexy” Johnson at Exit Zero Filling Station in recent weeks with no

adverse effects since first calling him a Birding Weirdo (he has not, as yet, deposited me in a trash can or stuffed me in a locker, which is appreciated). There was a little tension, but it was sexual in nature. The other day he had lunch with a whole flock of Birding Weirdos. Took an hour to sweep up all the seeds from the floor. And what does one call a flock of Birding Weirdos? A gaggle? A pod? Celibate? Dropped off my usual five copies of Exit Zero to Cape Bookkeeping and Karen Mirable last Thursday. As I filled out a check for the money I owed her for her impeccable tax ser-

vices (truly, she is a wizard), she thanked me for my plug a few weeks earlier. “Hoo boy…” I thought. “She clearly hasn’t seen this week’s issue…” Suffice to say, I will no longer be venturing past her associate Amanda Martin’s desk in future weeks, or at least until I feel the coast is clear. I did not learn how to make enemies out of friends, it’s something I was just born with. (Friend or foe, hire Karen to do your books. Just, uh, don’t bust her chops in your column. I’ll let you know how next week’s delivery goes. If you don’t hear from me, I’m probably locked in a filing cabinet in her storage unit.) And yes, it’s the same Amanda Martin at Cape Bookkeeping that I lightly made fun of a few weeks back, and only just last week did I put this together. “It’s okay,” she said. “Last time you came in I thought I knew you from somewhere (I’ve served her and her husband, the ever-decisive Charles, about a dozen times at EZFS), it’s just weird seeing people out of context.” I get this for normal people, Amanda, but I’m famous! And now I’d like to say a few words about

my new best friend, Lance Vogel. But really, can words do justice to a man who makes all those around him want to be better? A man of such fine, upstanding character and integrity that he must surely be touched by angels. A handsome, virile man that all other men aspire to be. I say thee nay, mere words fail. Lance Vogel must be experienced to be understood, and I will duel to the death any person that says, nay, thinks otherwise. (Oh, and congrats on Uncle Frank getting the Lakers head coaching job.) Ran into local music man Gregg Carpenter at 5 West last Wednesday night (where I totally didn’t go to watch the fourth quarter of the Raptors-Bucks game and thank you very much Raptors for finally deciding to have a bad fourth quarter a day after murdering my 76ers with one of the fluke shots of all time, but I digress). I’ve asked Gregg to work in just about all of my tribute bands at one time or another but haven’t found the right fit yet. Though his eyes lit up when I mentioned James Taylor. So maybe that? Or maybe he just doesn’t want to work with me. I’ll know for sure when I offer him a spot in a Gregg Carpenter tribute band and he says no. I got a load of sage advice from Inkwell proprietor Heidi Cummings the other day when ordering business cards and paying off my Beatles T-shirts from, ahem, 2017, almost none of it fit for print. In short; if you’re of a certain age, please get a colonoscopy. Sedated, if possible. Ran into local gym rat Mark Chamberlain while delivering magazines to Ostara’s, where I get my weekly delivery java fix (I went a little nuts and got a regular coffee this week). Saw him a few hours later while delivering to his North Beach Health Club. He asked, “How’d that coffee hold you?” I answered, “It got me to my next one.” That next one came from Avalon Coffee & Bagel in North Cape May. When I stepped up the register to pay they said, “You’re good!” And thus the Free Cof-

May 23, 2019 fee Gauntlet was thrown. Ball’s in your court, Ostara’s. Ball’s in your court… It was a strangely gig-less week this week. I kept feeling like I was forgetting something. But I did run into the lovely Marnie Lengle (at 5 Below, of all places), who runs the Harbor Square Theater concert series. This is a monthly show, usually themed (The Last Waltz tribute, Woodstock, The Ladies of R&B, etc) in Stone Harbor and well worth your time. She also booked my Beatles and Billy Joel bands for shows at the water tower later this summer. She is a woman who gets things done and gets them done right. If you are not watching Fosse/Verdon on FX you are doing yourself a huge disservice. The intertwined life stories of legendary director/choreographer Bob Fosse and just-as-legendary actor/dancer Gwen Verdon is one of love, deceit, heartbreak, triumph and failure. In short, it is an American opus. Michelle Williams is a knock-out as Verdon and Sam Rockwell might be at his best here playing Fosse. I want it to be 1,000 hours long and I want to watch all 1,000 hours right now. Also, Aya Cash, who plays Neil Simon’s wife Joan (and also co-stars on the raunchy, hysterical “You’re the Worst”) reminds me so much of Holly Knapp (Ding!) it’s scary. As you read this it is either just before or right in the teeth of Memorial Day weekend. If you’re so inclined you can catch me singing at the following; O’Brien & Joyce Saturday at Secondo, 530-930, and Monday at the Rusty Nail, 4-8. Monday my Beatles tribute, Love Me Dudes, is hosting a Beatles Open Mic at Carney’s, 3-7. You can hit me up on Facebook to see the list and pick out a couple songs to sing or play with the band, or you can accompany yourself, we’re easy like that. Anyone who attends all three will get my undying respect and one soft drink of your choice. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

will never understand the young. Just the other day I walked into the third-floor bathroom in the mansion, and caught one of my great-great-something grandsons taking photographs with what I had assumed to be a modern “pager” but is a cameratic apparatus and a miniaturized telegraph machine combined. He was a-fluster. When I demanded to know what was going on, he claimed he was sending pictures of Gentiles to his girlfriend, a wild-eyed young lady who hails from Wildwood. None of the spotty teen’s explanation made sense to me, any more than his state of partial undress, but then nothing the young do seems to be based on logic, anyway, and so I turned on my heel with a muttered “degenerate.” “But grandpa! All the kids do it nowadays!” he wailed. This fixation to send images explains why I have seen lines of chattering young people at the Point at sunset, holding their flat telephones out at arm’s length: I assumed they were making a call and afraid of the Radiation that Ma D’Catur used to insist streamed forth

from electrical devices in such quantities that it would scramble a fellow’s brains. As a result, we all wore rather jaunty aluminum helmets when the morse code machine was being used at home. I must say, the Radiation must have been strong enough even to penetrate those caps, as Ma was what people in those days used to call “cuckoo” and in the end was convinced that next door’s cat, Michael, was the antichrist and stealing from her purse. Anyway, it seems that those peculiarly self-obsessed youngsters are in fact photo-

Find Your Way Back...

graphing or making tiny talkie movie of their own faces, and for some reason pinching their cheeks in and pouting their lips at the same time. I even saw one chap with his camera-telephone on a stick, which he was waving in a manner that suggested he was challenging me to a duel. I instinctively whipped out my well-known swordstick (no euphemism here) and knocked the device from his hand. He instantly burst into tears and incoherently identified himself as an “influenza” and demanded recompense, along with a goodie bag and a room for the night. The infectious chap had a nerve and so I casually enquired as to whether his recording device had enough film inside, and when he nodded, I bade him turn it on, with the idea being he might make a “flick” to record his compensation. The finished work is entitled Entitled Wretch Gets Thrashing From Local Character and is a rollicking 30 seconds of the aforementioned wretch shrieking and rolling around on the sand as a small dog — played by Young Albert — savages him mercilessly. I expect to win all the yootyubes, and an Oscar.

The Activity Column

A

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, gearing up for ghosts

ccording to believers, Cape May is a hotspot for paranormal activity. Ghosts are apparently drawn to the quartz-rich sand which produces Cape May diamonds and reveal themselves in swirling mists and unexplained footsteps. Amiable area skeptics would rather credit weather and shoddy construction, but most agree with Hamlet — there are, indeed, “more things in heaven and earth” than science can explain. Experiment for yourself — take your kids on a ghost hunt. Kids crave harmless fright. By kindergarten, most children can tell the difference between real and pretend, and by third grade, they’re ready for a little scare. Parenting experts and centuries of storytellers agree on this — playful fright builds confidence in children, encouraging them to speculate about their monster-fighting capabilities and allowing them to explore real-world fears in a safe, age-appropriate way. A ghost hunt is the spooky adventure your kids need, and it’s also an excellent way for bigger, noisier kids to take an after-dinner walk while someone

rocks the baby to sleep. Announce the hunt in advance with a book about Cape May’s ghosts from Cape Atlantic Book Company. Let your kids assemble a ghost hunting kit made up of common tools you could pick up at Swain’s. Although there are expensive kits for sale online, yours can be as simple as a flashlight, a thermometer and a notebook. The flashlight lights your way and may flicker, like the candles in a Victorian seance, in response to a ghost hunter’s questions; the thermometer reveals cold spots which may indicate a ghost; and the notebook is to record hypotheses and obser-

vations according to the scientific method. Add an analog radio set between stations and a tape recorder to capture electronic voice phenomena. Download apps to your smartphone if you want to get fancy — you can get a virtual ouija board, a “ghost box” communicator, or a ghost detecting camera. Contrary to what the Ghostbusters led you to believe, you don’t need coveralls or geiger counters, but you do need bug spray. Focus the search on outdoor ghosts so you sleep soundly later. Debrief in the bright lights of the arcade. Bring the bug spray on a Ghost Walk through Historic Cold Spring Village, Thursdays through September. Stroll through the village by lantern light as you listen to tales of ghostly encounters. Ghost Walks depart from the brewery at 8pm at $16 per person, $12 for HCSV members and children 3-12. Visit hcsv. org for information. Or, if you’d like to learn more about earthly ghosts, join the Nature Center’s search for ghost crabs, Thursday, June 27 at 8:30. Call 609- 427- 3045 to register. $5 per person. Bring a flashlight and meet at the beach access of Mount Vernon Avenue.

The Quicky Horoscopes Your near future in two sentences by Lady Diane

ARIES: You will attend the International Kite Festival next to the Wildwoods Convention Center this Saturday. You will be inspired to go fly a kite. TAURUS: You will spend hours cleaning and prepping your barbeque grill. You will be so exhausted afterward that you will order tasty takeout from Exit Zero Filling Station instead. GEMINI: You will spend a few delightful hours dolphin watching from the roof deck of Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille. You will be inspired to go surfing. CANCER: You will take your dog for a walk on Higbee Beach. Everyone will comment on what a good boy he is and you will beam with pride. LEO: You will rewatch the finale of Game of Thrones. You STILL will not be able to get over how — spoiler alert — Bran (Brain!) won the throne. VIRGO: You will find the seaglass motherload while beachcombing at low tide. You will guard the location of your treasure with the same ferocity with which Austria guards the secret to the Hapsburg napkin fold (look it up!). LIBRA: You will eat your weight in asparagus because it’s finally in season! You will find yourself humming the lyrics to “Age of Aquarius” as “Age of Asparagus.” SCORPIO: You will learn to play Bridge. You will feel like a little old lady but, whatever, it’s fun. SAGITTARIUS: You will make sure to light your bike if riding at night, because you are smart. You will also put tassels on the handlebars because you are fancy. CAPRICORN: You will finally part with that favorite pair of sweatpants from 1999 that have a tear in the crotch and a stain on the knee. You will require space at this difficult time. AQUARIUS: You will go for your first dip in the ocean of the season. It will be everything you dreamed and more. PIECES: You will set up on the beach from sunrise to sundown with a good book, a picnic basket and something refreshing inside a koozie. Because it’s Memorial Day Weekend, baby.

The Movie Column

L

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

et’s talk about Keanu Reeves’ excellent adventures! The third chapter of his series entitled John Wick hit theaters this past week. I didn’t see the first two flicks in the series, and something tells me I didn’t need to. My fiancée caught me up easily. No, I don’t think there’s any spoilers here. Wick was a calculated killing machine. He went rogue, and for that he’s being chased down by all of the other assassins. There is a bounty on his head of $14 million. From the first fight scene, you know this movie will not hold anything back. Welcome to the summer blockbuster madness. The bloodshed that takes place is so extreme you can’t help but to laugh. It’s a phenomenon I can’t explain. Laughing at somebody else’s demise just doesn’t seem right, But it’s been going on for decades. Consider Charlie Chaplin. We laughed because of the predicaments he faced and because of his bad luck and misery. He was quoted saying, “My pain may be the reason for somebody’s laughter, but my laughter

must never be the reason for somebody’s pain.” The bosses of the assassins want him dead, and everybody is trying to get that bounty. Only problem: Mr Wick won’t die. And by that I mean this one is getting rave reviews and making box office bucks. The same can be said of Reeves, he continues to succeed. The actor is — wait for it, wait for it – 54 years old. You heard me! His big break was 30 years ago with the role of Ted and Bill and Ted’s Excellent

Adventure. Next year, he reprises that role in a new movie. He has done all kinds of flicks — romantic, silly, and action movies. The latter seem to become the more memorable ones — certainly the ones that are turned into franchises. This latest movie of his is a good crowd-pleaser. Everybody at the theater was all about the dazzling special effects and seemingly endless fight scenes But, honestly, how many people can they kill in one movie? More importantly, how many bad guys are so bad with a gun or sword that they can’t get a good shot at our main character? You could ask a lot of questions about plot development, character development, all those bad shots — but you don’t have time to think. It’s one fight after another with just a little breather in between. In the end, you leave the theater happy for the fact that you haven’t had to think for the last two hours. There’s something to be said for that little breather, too.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have a boatload of family members coming in for my husband’s 60th birthday — ages one year to early 30s — and I am wondering what to do with them. Naturally, we’ll have a birthday barbecue with all the trimmings in the backyard. I am sending them all off to the beach while I get ready, but I’m not sure what to do with them the next two days. What else do you recommend? — Events Organizer Dear Organizer An afternoon at Morey’s Pier is certainly in order. Rides, games and the beach. They’ll be so exhausted when they get home, they will fall into bed. The twenty-year-olds can have a night out at Carney’s and the Ugly Mug and brunch at Uncle Bill’s Pancake House is a Sunday must for the whole gang. They will leave

Wise answers to perplexing questions

happy and you will get them out of the house which can sometimes be claustrophobic for everyone. Dear Answer Lady I started dating this girl about a month ago and we are currently I guess semibroken up because I refused to come to her family outing on Memorial Day weekend. I simply did not want to meet her parents, her grandparents, her aunts, uncles, her cousins. It’s too soon for all that and I don’t really like people anyway. I don’t go to my own family

stuff if I can weasel out of it. I like this girl — which is rare for me — and I would like to continue seeing her, but I am not that guy. I’m not the guy you bring to huge gathering where they all stare at me and decided if I’m good enough. My question to you is — what can I do to make amends but still make it clear that it was unfair to subject me to that. — Not that Guy Dear Guy Start by sending her flowers from Kate’s Flowers as a peace offering. Have them delivered and in the card invite her to dinner at The Ebbitt Room. If she agrees, and you must have some inclination that she will since she did want to introduce you to her whole family, then you have won half the battle. Don’t bring up your refusal to go to the gathering right away. Have a cocktail and app and while you are waiting for the main course, be honest with her as you were with the Answer Lady. Explain that you are not a people person, that you cannot change who you are, and that meeting her family will have to come in small doses.

Bird Droppings

N

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

onbirders must wonder what drives birders to pursue their avocation with such passion. The answer is, “It’s a quest.” Every species you have not seen becomes your next quest, a challenge to be met and mastered. So it was on Monday, when 18 eager participants turned out for my Monday morning Meadows walk. Eager enough to brave the sub-fifty temperatures and steady rain. Twenty years ago, I might have marched the group around the south Cape May Meadows. Now. When the weather turns gnarly, I relocate to the Sunset Grill whose welcoming roofed deck and view of Delaware Bay allows unencumbered, dry, looks at lots of birds, plus coffee and hot cocoa. The breakfast sandwiches are pretty darn fine, too. Back to quests. After compelling looks at migrating swallows, terns and profile views of a long-tailed duck, Karen spotted a swarm of sandpipers on the jetty south of Sunset Beach, which husband and ace birder Bill Boyle confirmed to be Purple Sandpipers. Arctic breeders but Atlantic coast win-

ter residents. What this means is that if you don’t live in the Arctic, or reside close to the Atlantic coast, your chances of seeing one of these animated rocky coast specialists are slim. On sandy coast, like ours, the birds substitute rock jetties for rocky coast. So specific are Purple Sandpipers in their habitat selection that in 40 years of birding, I have never seen one on a beach. One of my group, a young birder from Washington DC, had never seen the species. Not willing to accept a semi-conjectural

scope view, she set off in the rain to close the distance, a quarter mile walk in the rain. Gaining the jetty, she found the birds less than cooperative, but eventually got a look that did not make our consciousness squirm. Warmed by her successful quest, she returned to the group and a curtain call. By good fortune, a flock of 20 Purple Sandpiper that must have been hiding on the far side of the Concrete Ship materialized out of the gloom to festoon themselves across the tip of the jetty 50 feet in front of us — so close, you could see the orange base of their bills. Then a bonus. Flying up the beach was a small, pallid gull that I initially identified as a Ring-billed but which proved to be an adult Iceland Gull, a rare wintering species. Life birds in stereo for our Maryland birder. Which explains the other reason birding is so alluring. You never know what Ma Nature is going to serve up. It’s what drives birders out on a rainy day — and why, after 40 years, I keep birding. Next, please.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

DREAM is a beauty whose name truly reflects her personality. She came to the shelter with her housemate when her owners could no longer care for them. Her piercing blue eyes hold your attention as you walk through the shelter and she wears a perpetual grin. Dream would be a wonderful, companion for a family that is looking for an active, big girl.

ASH was a beloved 4 year old German Shepherd whose owner could no longer care for her. She lived with another dog as well as cats and is very confused to be at the shelter. Ash prefers to be leaning into humans in the yard rather than chasing toys, although she will chase a ball if thrown. This beautiful girl is looking for a loving home. Adopt!

Robert Panaccio, VMD Robert Moffatt, VMD Nancy Reilly, VMD Patricia J. Link, DVM

MAXINE is a two year old German shepherd who lived with a family including children before coming to the shelter. It is reported that she was good with everyone in the family, but was not comfortable with outsiders. It is for this reason that Maxine came to the shelter. Maxine will be shown to potential adopters with an approved application and by appointment.
