“Summerland” At East Lynne Last Wednesday, the long-anticipated play Summerland opened at East Lynne. The show, a New Jersey premiere performing at the First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, tells the story of William M. Mumler, an 1860s photographer who claimed he captured spirits of the dead with his camera in Boston and New York. A detective is out to discredit him — will he succeed? The gripping play — which may even get the Exit Zero philistines to the theater — runs through July 20. For more info, visit eastlynnetheater.org. SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

There are 60 species of Glass Squid in the ocean, some reaching as large as 9.8 feet. Most are totally transparent, hence the name. The bodies are typically puffy, with eight sets of arms (six short, two long). Many glow in the dark because of lightproducing organs located beneath the eyes. They also carry around a pouch that’s filled with ammonia solution, which helps them float.

A couple of silent movies released in 1913 were shot in Cape May. The most famous, Louie, the Life Saver, starred Harry Bentham. The 1971 movie Going Home featuring tough guy icon Robert Mitchum was also (partially) filmed here. Same with a slasher film called The Prowler, about teens murdered on the night of a graduation dance, starring Farley Granger of Alfred Hitchock fame. In 2016, Heather Graham and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje filmed Wetlands (pictured), about a tortured cop attempting a fresh start here.

In West Mills by De’Shawn Charles Winslow This debut novel follows a pregnant black woman in a small North Carolina town that doesn’t accept her. It chronicles her friendship, over four decades, with the one neighbor who does.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: The Ebbitt Room porch at The Virginia hotel. The scene: We’d just come from the beach on a breezy Sunday, feeling sunkissed and blissful. The only thing missing? Something cool and refreshing to sip, plus a few nibbles. So we headed to the porch for all of that, plus some excellent horse watching. Say what? That’s right — Cape May’s horse-drawn carriages head right down leafy Jackson Street, meaning the soundtrack to an evening on The Ebbitt Room porch is delightful clip-clopping courtesy of a beautiful steed. The people watching’s not so bad, either. That guy in the velvet suit jacket had us puzzled, then we realized he was a musician heading into the Mad Batter restaurant next door to perform, and those guys are so cool they’re allowed to dress however they like. The server: The always cheerful and delightful Plamena from Bulgaria. We asked what her name means in her native language and she said “fire.” We have no way of knowing whether this is true or whether Plamena’s name actually means something decidedly less cool like, say, potatoes. We’ll take her word for it, though. The food: Arguably the most savory lobster roll on the island. Grilled oysters. A side of fried cauliflower. Pork spare ribs that fall off the bone. English pea agnolotti. And… whoops, sorry. We blacked out for a second from remembering the sheer, sensual joy of this meal. The dish we didn’t get: The side of carrots. When we asked Plamena if we’d ordered too much food, she gave us an honest answer: yep. So we nixed the, uh, smallest, healthiest thing on the menu. Don’t judge us! The drinks: Rosé wine, jalapeño margaritas, old fashioneds (with the good kind of cherries, naturally). The buzz: We expertly managed to hit that perfect point between not tipsy and too tipsy. And we expertly managed to stay there. Remind us to update the “special skills” section on our respective resumés.

Cape May’s original farm-to-table

Place: The Red Store Chef: Lucas Manteca Signature dish: The Chorizo Torta. The homemade chorizo sausages brings back a lot of memories from Argentina for me. Then we nail it with the layers of flavors, the sweetness of the tomato jam, the kick of the roasted poblano, earthiness for avocado and, of course, the fried egg as a cherry on top.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

nce again I come to you approximately 36 hours past deadline. This is not because I’m an irresponsible journalist (all apologies to real journalists) but because my life is so jam-packed with awesomeness I need as much time as possible to put it all into words. Also, I forgot. But I only forgot because my deadline fell on Father’s Day. And possibly the six-pack of Bud Light I drank at band rehearsal (to which I did not drive...). The day started with my boys (Owen, Jackson and Henry) taking me to lunch at Lucky Bones. The food was reliably excellent as it always is at Lucky Bones, and I’m not sure if Kayleigh our waitress was really into me or just working on her tip. I guess the only smart thing to do is go back several times to find out. After that was the FINAL rehearsal of The Terry O’Brien Band, which makes its world debut THIS SUNDAY the 23rd at Carney’s, 9-1. As with any new venture, there are some nerves, but mostly I’m excited to perform this material. ICYMI, this band is playing one set each of Beatles, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen

and Prince (in that order) and features Love Me Dudes members Al Olivero, Rachel Husta and Sue Polcer, Credibles survivor Dr David Bee and newcomer Richard Lewis (no, not that Richard Lewis). Rehearsals have been boisterous (the Bud Light helps) and lots of fun. How can they not be when playing songs like “Born to Run” and “Let’s Go Crazy”? We look forward to playing them for you and hope to see you there. Speaking of Carney’s (what a sweet, sweet segue), Terry O’ke starts this Tuesday the 25th, 9-1. (It actually started last Tues-

day, the 18th, but too late to make last week’s issue). I’ve hosted a lot of karaoke shows in a lot of venues since 2005, but last summer at Carney’s, my first one there, was the most consistently bananas. By a lot. (Adult shows, anyway; there are some kids shows I can’t talk about…) Every Tuesday a panel of judges will determine our top 3 finishers, all of whom we hope to bring back for a 2019 Karaoke Sing-Off on Labor Day. If you’d like to be one of those judges, drop me a line on Facebook. (Stay off my Twitter.) Thank you Carney’s (Sean, in particular) for these gigs and the other 25 or so we have lined up for the postseason! Working backwards a bit, Saturday was also a humdinger. My Beatles tribute, Love Me Dudes, had the pleasure of playing the 174th Annual Cape May Point Picnic (174 is an estimate; no one seems to know when it started). What started in February as a chance meeting at a gas station with Connie Campanella (not as skeevy as it sounds, but it’s more fun not to explain) culminated in the Dudes rocking Pavilion Circle for two

hours last Saturday. Everyone seemed to have a good time and we hope to be back again one of these days. Thank you, Connie, for pulling into Exit Zero Filling Station one freezing winter afternoon! Speaking of Exit Zero Filling Station (I mean, come on… that’s a beautiful segue), after the Beatles gig my acoustic duo, O’Brien & Joyce, became the first musical act to ever play EZFS! We weren’t quite sure what to expect, if that room would be conducive to live music, but turns out our fears were unfounded. From song one, the full dining room was singing along, making requests and generally having a great time. (Billy, who tipped us four times, may have had too much fun, but I digress.) And the acoustics are amazing; we barely needed speakers and microphones. Anyway, O’Brien & Joyce will now be your regular Saturday night Exit Zero entertainment, 6-10. Because I don’t work there enough... I reminded Tim (Joyce) several times during the week that I’d be arriving shortly before our 7pm start time due to the picnic, but not to panic, I’d be there. He countered by starting at 6:30 because he’s bad at remembering things. I will never run out of things to write about because I’m the Exit Zero Delivery Guy, which gives me about 125 targets a week from which to plunder. This week I ran into George Andy at Hidden Beauty salon. This is notable only because I also used to get haircuts. I’m not exactly sure what George does for a living, only that it must be something very organized as he is the most prepared customer I’ve ever served at the Filling Station. I don’t want to rat anybody out, but they got babies working at Ostara’s. Must. Kill. Jon. Sachar. Retraction of the Week: Last week I complained that I gave local chanteuse Maddie Hogan a $20 to get me a drink at one of my gigs and did not get any change. She informs me that she bought

June 20, 2019 me the drink on her own dime and put the $20 back in our tip jar. Meaning I then split that $20 with Tim at the end of the night, costing me $10. THANKS A LOT, MADDIE! Ok, I don’t really want to kill Jon Sachar. Anymore. But in that three minutes he gave me his Home Depot card to pay his dinner bill while I was juggling seven tables I probably could have done it. This was the same night I thought it would be a good idea to put inserts in my shoes to help combat my foot/ankle/ heel issues but only left me wallowing in such freakish agony that I almost had to quit my Rusty Nail gig the next day. I still don’t like having cable (a percentage of my bill goes to prop up networks that hate me that otherwise could not survive on ad revenue alone because cable is a racket) but I am glad I finally got to watch Deadwood on HBO. Every time I watch a movie that realistically depicts the Old West the more convinced I become I would not have lived past eight. Lastly this week, and before I dip out for my Rusty Nail gig, I’d like to congratulate my eldest son Owen on his graduation from high school. The country was still holding its collective breath the day he was born (9/18/01) and we weren’t exactly sure what kind of world he’d be entering. We now know it’s a better one than before him. Owen has always been current-age-going-on-40, looking out for his baby brothers and picking up the slack when mom or dad had to work, which mom and dad deeply appreciate. That he is handsome is not in question (he is my son), but beneath that surface lies the soul of a poet, beats the heart of an artist. It has been my privilege to shepherd this first leg of his journey. I love you, boy. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

love Cape May during a thunderstorm. At the first sign of those swollen gray clouds, I drop whatever I am doing/whoever I am giving a good seeing-to (my patience is notoriously thin, and it takes little in the way of a lapse of manners or a failure to get to the point for me to snap and whip out my stout rod) and rush to the Widow’s Walk. From there, a fine single malt in hand, I can watch as lightning reduces the less intelligent of visitors to smears on the sidewalk. You might think that this tends to happen more often than chance would account for. And you would be correct: while every tall building in the city has a lightning conductor, those do not act as regular lightning conductors do. Certainly, they funnel the colossal charge away before it can reduce the building to flaming toothpicks. But instead of grounding and wasting all of the wondrous electricity, we have a series of sub-sidewalk copper cables that route the bolt around the town, to be brought briefly but spectacularly to the surface through a series of levers and cables in the D’Catur Mansion. I holler coordinates down

to my faithless manservant, Kitchener, who scribbles them on parchment and inserts them into a bronze tube, which is whisked away by the mansion’s pneumatic vacuum tube system, to the engineers in the basement. Those insulated worthies haul on the switches and a mere handful of seconds later, the electricity is delivered to the paving stone requested. The effects are seldom less than impressive, and it takes skill to aim them correctly, and on time. There are several hundred target spots in town, and what with the oft-swift-

Find Your Way Back...

moving targets, the interrupted line of sight, and the delay between me shouting and the charge being delivered, it can be imprecise art. Why, I remember one busy night shouting so many coordinates that the lever-chaps grew agitated, and a dozen lightning charges went astray. Half simply flowed into the city grid, blowing light bulbs in a hundred homes, and turning on electrical appliances at random, three arrived at the Admiral Hotel at once, causing an explosion and conflagration that caused damage that has to this day not been righted. And one, due to some watt-related quirk of physics, rattled around town for a day before grounding into the soles of the visiting Wildwood Ambassador. Why, the poor chap was just about to sign over the deeds to that benighted village to us, in order that we might return the land to nature, and the inhabitants to a simple, happy pre-sentient grazing state. The pen lit up like Christmas, as did his teeth. Quite a sight, I assure you. As soon as we find the melted pen, we will complete the signing and action that plan: it’s a kindness to those poor Wildwooders, after all.

O

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s tuna time

nce upon a time, most Americans caught their tuna from the supermarket shelf. At one time, 85% of Americans had a couple of cans of tuna in their cupboard. Today, just like Charlie, the rejected fish in the commercials of my youth, canned tuna gets no respect. Star-Kist Tuna’s many “Charlie” commercials featured a tuna who clamored to be chosen. Styled as a beatnik, with a beanie, glasses, and the hip lingo of the Beat Generation to showcase his “good taste,” Charlie, illogically, wanted to be caught. At the end of every commercial, the narrator reminded Charlie that only the best tuna were chosen and a hook would appear carrying the note, “Sorry, Charlie.” Though tuna was the star fish of the twentieth century, it only came to popularity due to a sardine shortage. Before 1900, tuna was a “trash” fish and few Americans even knew what it tasted like. Fish, in general, was only a small part of the American diet, and most of that was salmon. In 1910, Americans ate about six pounds of all

fish annually, compared to 60 pounds of beef, another 60 of pork, and 16 pounds of chicken. Fishermen derided tuna as the “chicken of the sea” because of its bland flavor, and marketers cleverly twisted this phrase to sell the fish to a skeptical public. Canned tuna was cheap and shelf stable, perfect for cold dinners in the summer, casseroles in the winter, and sandwiches for lunch. In addition, tuna is high in protein and iron, and low in fat and calories. Tuna’s popularity took a dive when nutritionists raised concerns over high mercury levels, conservationists revealed that net fishing was dangerous to dolphins, and

prices began to rise. The current popularity of the keto diet has given canned — and pouched — tuna a boost, but Americans currently prefer fresh fish. Sorry, Charlie. As tournament fishing season gets underway, serious tuna anglers will be in Cape May this week for the MidAtlantic Tuna Tournament, June 19 through June 23. Twenty boats will participate in this “intimate, high stakes” competition which features strict rules and “big payouts” for yellowfin and big eye tuna caught in the deep sea canyons. If their success inspires you to go fishing, cast a line, join a party boat, or book a charter boat. Visit njfishing.com for information about surf fishing and finding a boat for deep sea fishing. At the South Jersey Marina, for example, you don’t need a reservation to join the party boats Cape May Lady and Porgy IV, but you do need to arrive at least a half hour early and bring your own lunch. A four hour trip costs $45, with discounts for children and seniors. Use their rods and reels for $5 or bring your own. Visit southjerseymarina.com for more information.

The Theater Column

East Lynne’s “Summerland” is reviewed by Sally Galbraith

T

he cast and crew of Summerland, a NJ Premier by Arlitia Jones appearing through July 20 at East Lynne Theater, does not disappoint. The theater is at 500 Hughes Street in Cape May (www.eastlynnetheater.org). This three-character play, set in New York City after the Civil War, tells the story of the spirit photographer, William H. Mumler, (1832-1884). Jones weaves a fictional mystery around these historical characters, Mumler (Kyle Walton), his nemesis detective Joseph Tooker (Jared Jason Murray), and Mumler’s wife, clairvoyant Katherine (Elisabeth Ness). The single set, Mumler’s studio, is almost a fourth character. Beautiful and eerie, the set features velvet fainting couch and classical sculptures, and busts that are ultimately covered in black cloth by the photographer. Kudos to Lee O’Connor as Technical Director and Stage Manager. The central focus of the set is Mumler’s imposing camera, a family heirloom of East Lynne Artistic Director Gayle Stahlhuth. Determined to prove Mumler a fraud,

Tooker appears in Mumler’s studio under false name to have his portrait taken. Many of Mumler’s clients seek proof of an afterlife as evidence that loved ones lost during the Civil War live on. Tooker’s portrait reveals a spirit image that is very disquieting for the detective, who fought for the Union and lost an arm in battle. Act one belongs to the photographer and the detective, whose intense intellectual sparring alludes to their disturbing pasts. In the duel between a spiritualist and a materialist, the conflict between the two emerges. Mumler believed that death exists, but that grief does not have to. His photographs give proof of an

afterlife, the idealized Summerland of the title. Tooker believes that death is the end. He has reason to hope this is true. The entrance of Katherine Mumler in the final scene of the first act introduces a third character, seemingly the most powerful. She drives away the inquisitor Tooker and the spooky effects intensify. Act two belongs to Elisabeth. Her power over the men is uncanny. All of these characters harbor secrets. Their unsolved mysteries intensify the question at the heart of the play. Is death final? This drama asks more questions than it answers and gives the audience much food for thought. Tom Byrn also directed Silent Sky last year at East Lynne, and played Abraham Lincoln and Will Rogers in previous seasons. He has elicited fine performances from each of his actors, all newcomers to ELT. The eerie music Byrn chose is perfect. Production assistant Andrew Lofredo took a well-deserved bow at the curtain call. At least we know the source of those other worldly noises and the moving furniture… Or do we?

TAURUS: You will order the kale and granola salad from Mayer’s Tavern. It will be so good that you will order seconds. GEMINI: You will get stung by a jellyfish. Your friends will pee on you before you can inform them that urine doesn’t actually stop the pain — that’s a seaside myth. CANCER: You will buy yourself a pair of Grunden’s flip-flops from SeaGear Outfitters. Because they are antimicrobial, they will not stink even when you get them wet. LEO: You will attend Wine and Paint Night at Willow Creek Winery on Monday, June 24. You will invent a new style of art called “drunken impressionism.” VIRGO: You will set out to spend the weekend catching up on errands. You will actually spend the weekend contemplating which breakfast cereal has the best mascot. LIBRA: You will dig a hole on the beach but you will fill it back in when you are done so no one trips because you are a responsible beachgoer. Good for you! SAGITTARIUS: You will get Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Who Will Stop the Rain?” stuck in your head. This will be particularly annoying as you have not headed down to Virginia and the clouds are not, in fact, pourin’ confusion on the ground. CAPRICORN: You will see a shooting star. You will wish for a sixpack and some rhythm but, alas, there are some requests even the cosmos are not powerful enough to grant. AQUARIUS: You will perfect your laughing gull impersonation. You will clear the beach around you. PISCES: You will stop traffic to help a turtle cross the road. You will get run over but you will be okay in the end and, most importantly, you will successfully save that turtle!

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I put up a stockade fence in my yard. Done by professionals. My neighbor came out as soon as the job was done to measure it and found that I was three inches over the line, falling on his property and is demanding that I have it moved back. Is this unreasonable and insane? I have no choice but to acquiesce, otherwise he is threatening to call code enforcement. Oh, by the way, he’s a lawyer. I feel I should try one more time to reason with him before I call in the fence guys. My wife says that’s a waste of time and will make matters worse. What do you think? – Fenced In Dear Fenced Listen to your wife. First off, the error was the fencing company’s and they must make it right. It looks like your neighbor is

Wise answers to perplexing questions

offended by the fence construction. Maybe he thinks you’re fencing him out. Maybe he doesn’t like the look of it. Maybe he’s likes to fight. It doesn’t matter really. You have to live next to him for many years, presumably. So, let it go. Clearly, however, you will not be inviting him over for the big “I built a fence” barbecue. What you need to do now is go to Collier’s Liquor Store. Buy a bottle of your favorite adult beverage. Sit back and enjoy the fence, knowing it blocks him from your view.

Dear Answer Lady My baby sister borrowed my car and backed it into a telephone pole, putting a small dent in the back. She refuses to fix it. Why? Because she’s my baby sister and gets away with this kind of thing all the time. I’m sick of it. I worked hard to buy that car. She works hard at being a get-over artist. I want her to make this right. Can I turn her into the police claiming a hit-and-run? — Played Out Dear Played Out No, you cannot claim hit-and-run, which is typically perpetrated on a life form not a pole. IF she does not pay you for the car repair, the punishment must be that you do not lend her your car or anything else in the future. When she tries to guilt you into doing so, simply remind her of this car incident. It does seem that you are hinting that this is a larger issue with you and perhaps other members of the family. You can’t control what they will do but you can make sure you do not enable her bad behavior. A trip to Sunset Grill is a must. Order a burger and sit and enjoy the view and get your chi flowing in the right direction.

Bird Droppings

Y

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ou’re a Cape May birder. Good for you. Now the bad news, it’s June, Spring migration is over, Fall migration is two or three weeks away. Nothing to do but hope for an early and active hurricane season to blow some good fortune our way, you think. I think you should take up a new hobby, Try bird watching. Don’t just tick birds off on a list. Watch them. See what they are doing, what kind of food they’re targeting and how they find it. Let yourself be engaged and entertained. The other day I was watching House Sparrows in our back yard. We don’t marinate our yard in toxins so there is lots of insect life (and weeds). Most people think House Sparrows just chow down on boardwalk scraps, discarded donuts and pizza rind. But the sparrows in my yard were flushing and catching small white mouths hidden in the grass. Not a moth escaped and I learned not to take this common immigrant sparrow for granted. When I first started birding, House

Sparrows built their nests in the ivy clinging to the chimney of a neighbor’s house. The activity of the adults was captivating and the throaty “churp” of House Sparrow as iconic as the sound of lawn mowers and the jingle of the ice cream truck. Sixty years on, the sound of House Sparrows reminds me of popsicle so cold they smoked in the super-heated air of a North Jersey summer. In my youth, I only got to see Laughing Gulls during our family’s two-week vacation to the shore. Now I get to see them

every day and my challenge is to try and figure out their daily pattern. Most people think LAGUs eat nothing but French fries. No, there were Laughing Gulls on the Jersey Shore long before French fries. In the summer of 1977, I spent a lot of time with a young gull researcher on Nummy Island was a greenhead-infested colony of Laughing Gulls whose 20 nests were numbered. We learned that the primary food ferried to young was not French fries or pilfered hot dogs. The gulls were disgorging crops of horseshoe crab egg and adult greenhead flies to the young. It was an eye opener to me and time well spent learning about a common bird people only think they know. We paid a price in blood. The greenheads the gulls did not get took retribution upon the researcher’s bare legs. (Me? I wear jeans year-round.) So try bird watching. You never know what you’ll learn and it will keep you occupied until shorebirds start south in July. Happy bird watching! Keep good notes. Wear jeans.

BONNIE the beagle bounded into the shelter as a stray. She is an energetic young girl (only 7 months old) who needs a family to work with her enthusiastic outlook on life. Bonnie loves human attention and eagerly tries to gain that. She needs a loving home that will work with her lively personality to develop her into a family companion. Adopt today!

JACK is a 4 year old miniature pincher mix. He lived with a family including children, another dog and cats prior to coming to the shelter. Jack is crate trained. He enjoys playing with toys, taking walks, riding in the car and simply relaxing outside in the sunshine. He is very affectionate but can take time to warm up to strangers. Meet Jack today!

BUBBA would love a great retirement home where he can relax, purr, love, eat, sleep and keep you company. Bubba doesn’t have a mean bone in his body so making him great with visitors and grand kids. He is in very good health for an older guy and is very clean. Bubba also doesn’t eat too much so he won’t cost you too much either! Adopt!

BIANCA is a Siamese and snowshoe mix. She’s also a senior princess who will likely have many eager suitors stopping by the shelter. Her vaccinations are up to date, she’s house-trained like a boss, and now all she needs is a good home with a deserving guardian. Think you’re cool enough to care for this hip cat?

KITTENS...What’s your favorite color? Orange, black, grey, white, buff, tabby? Male or female -- they’ve got ‘em. Full of energy and as cute as can be, you’ll find the kittens will bring a smile to your face, and warm that lonely corner of your heart. Adoption Fee: $70.00. Note: the photos of the kittens posted have already been adopted.
