Hops Festival At Physick Estate Another one of the unofficial harbingers that summer is here? The fast-growing annual Hops Festival! Last Saturday from 10am to 6pm, throngs of attendees enjoyed blues, booze and barbecue on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate. The free event featured live music from Frank Bey, Bluebone, James Supra and Sarah Ayers as well as local beer, kids’ activities and a crafts-and-collectibles show. Oh, and the perfect weather was just a bonus. Let the 2019 season commence! Pictured: Jeanne, Dan, Adeline, Dylan McCabe, Teresa, Michael, Riley, Aubrey, Haley and Kennedy Schimek

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

The orangutan crab looks like, well, an underwater orangutan. It has long limbs and a shaggy coat of red hair inside which small microorganisms and bits of plankton catch. The creatures then pluck these things out and feast on them. These small fuzzy crabs may also hide ocean debris in their hair for camouflage purposes. They live mostly on reefs in the western Pacific — no monkeying around.

On a drizzly day in August, 1905, Henry Ford and Louis Chevrolet faced off in an automobile race on the sands of Cape May, between Madison Avenue and Poverty Beach. It was a highly anticipated publicity stunt — “The excitement is as intense as if a lighted match had been thrown into a gasoline tank,” read a Philadelphia Inquirer article. “All of the hotels have arranged for early breakfasts. Time and tide wait for no man.” During the race, Ford’s car was overtaken by a wave, and he came in last. Chevrolet set a new world record, one mile in 57 seconds. More than 20,000 people turned up for the event.

Calypso By David Sedaris A king of comedic narrative nonfiction, Sedaris does it again with his latest collection of personal essays: misanthropic, self-deprecating and totally relatable.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: SeaSalt at the Ocean Club Hotel, an “upmarket surfand-turf spot.” The seats: On the breezy deck patio, across from the beach. The server: Sydney. She was lovely. And her recommendations were spot-on. Yes, that blueberry lemonade was refreshing without being too sweet. The music: The Herb Moore Trio regaled guests inside. (They perform here every Tuesday, folks.) We had the opportunity to chat with musician Terry Dougherty for a bit, and we discussed how he stays so trim: No carbs. Diane says she’d give up schmaltzy romcoms and early bedtimes before turning her back on pasta (and that’s saying something). The conversation: We discussed all the times people have given fake names to Exit Zero photographer Aleksey Moryakov. We’re on to you, Seymour Butts. The other conversation: We also discussed the Cape May bubble — is it real or just a seaside myth? It appears it was not in effect this particular evening, as the sky DID start drizzling a little while we dined, but only enough to cool us off. Servers graciously offered to move us inside, but we declined and so did all those around us. The food: Cape May Salt oysters (because we cannot, apparently, get enough). Baby back ribs (because Jack never met a rib he didn’t like). Lobster ravioli (because Diane wasn’t kidding about that pasta lust). A grilled marinated pork chop with a sticky rice cake and Asian slaw (because, duh). And crab croquettes with chili aioli (because the crab is delicious and aioli is a lot more enjoyable to eat than it is to spell). The verdict: Let’s just say we kept eating long (and we mean long) after we were full. The shout-out: Big ups to the little girl next to us who chowed down on an octopus salad with bean sprouts and charred cucumber instead of, say, chicken fingers from the kids’ menu. Good on you, girlfriend.

Bartender Of The Week This week, Bobby Boyd from the C-View is up. How long have you been bartending? 28 years. Favorite drink to make? A rum runner because it tastes delicious! What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer doesn’t know what they want when they wave you down for a drink. Dream job? An actor. We’re seeing a little bit of a mix between Brad Pitt and Mark Wahlberg!

The Signature Dish

6:30-2 weekends; 7-2 midweek BEACH & PERRY, CAPE MAY

Cape May’s original farm-to-table

Place: Peter Shields Inn Chef: Carl Messick Signature dish: I would have to say my crab salad is a dish that follows me everywhere. I created this dish as an addition for one of my old chefs many years ago. It’s jumbo lump crab, smoked salmon, mache, toasted almonds and basil aioli. It was the first thing I created that was put on a menu and meant a lot to me as a young chef.

Wine Of The Week Collier’s Liquor Store Hecula Spanish Red $12.99 Intense and shiny cherry red color. On the nose, it blooms pleasant ripe red fruit aromas and sweet spices. It has very elegant and integrated wooden notes that do not cover its intense fruitiness. Pairs well with beef, pasta, lamb and venison. Enjoy!

The Exit Zero Filling Station Ambush Come get gas at our place and you might just get lucky!

It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places — from $3 off fudge to $15 off dinner. It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into local tattoo artist Destanie Safford, from Perigee Moon Tattoos, on her way to Cherry Hill. We asked her to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. She picked out a $5 discount to the Rusty Nail. Who would she like to share this with? Comedian, Gene Wilder.

Undertow

I

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

n a hurry, so let’s make this quick. (Title of my sex manual.) All kinds of cool things happened this week, but the one that’s got me so jazzed as I write this at 3:30am Monday (only 10 hours past deadline) is the debut of the Terry O’Brien Band, which JUST HAPPENED at Carney’s (and happens again every Sunday night through August). We tore through sets of Beatles, Billy Joel Bruce Springsteen and Prince, and, if my extremely sore throat is any indication, had a good time doing it. I even lost half a pound! I’m very proud of my bandmates, Dr David Bee, Rachel Husta, Sue Polcer, Al Olivero and Richard Lewis, who took on the massive task of learning a LOT of songs in a VERY short period of time and carried it off with aplomb. (The Springsteen set was one of the highlights of my career, it was that much fun.) Thanks to Carney’s, Sean in particular, for planting the seed of this idea and allowing us to water it. I think it’s going to bear a lot of fruit. And that was a lot of plant analogies in one sentence. Many thanks to Kathleen Scullion

and Dean Bloemer, who gritted their teeth through the Beatles and Joel stuff they’ve heard us play a thousand times by now, and stuck around for the new stuff. We do it again this Sunday at 9, and if anyone is feeling brave enough for a 10-mile journey, we’re at The Watering Hull in Stone Harbor this Friday, also at 9. Also, after saying it out loud a few times on stage, “The Terry O’Brien Band” feels a little egotistical. Even for me. Carney’s has these wonderful inhouse video billboards that show photos and vid-

eos from their last 40 years. Cousin Ray Heslip is in every third one. It was a week full of firsts for us here at Undertow Central. As mentioned last week, O’Brien & Joyce debuted at Exit Zero Filling Station (where I moonlight as a server and manager) on Saturday and will keep showing up on Saturdays until Jack Wright kicks us out. We also played our first ever gig at Mayer’s Tavern on Thursday. Mayer’s was kind of famously Cape May’s dive bar, but Joanie Kelley and her crew have done a fantastic job in running this place as a real respectable joint. I had questions about Joanie’s judgment seeing as how she’s dating John Wilsey, but turns out she’s pretty okay. (Smiley face emoji.) The biblically inclement weather pushed us inside last week, but we’ll see you on the patio this week. Have the scallops. It’s just what you do at Mayer’s. Last week was also the first Terry O’ke of the season at Carney’s, and it was just as insane as you’d think. Francis “Don’t call me Francis” Mikulak, Victoria DeFrancesco (whose name I always misspell but I’m too

far past deadline to look it up) and Dave The Tool Man Tooley had the very difficult task of judging our contest, which was won by Rachel Sheets on her 22nd birthday which is impossible because I was just hosting karaoke at her sixth birthday party last week. If you want to be a judge one of these nights just drop me a line on the Facebook, where all the young people gather. Terry O’ke at Carney’s is every Tuesday at 9. Be advised: The judges are very susceptible to bribes. What else did I do this week? Oh yeah… Tim Joyce and I played a bananas gig at the Rusty Nail on Sunday (after Exit Zero on Saturday, just before the TOB Band Sunday night… you see why my throat is always sore?) and I continue to be amazed at how gracefully they handle such massive quantities of humans (most of whom are on VACATION, dammit, so gimme what I want and give it to me now!) on a daily basis. And I don’t want to make anyone feel bad, but the Rusty Nail is, by far, our best tipping gig. Suspiciously, a good many of those tips come from toddlers with no visible means of income. They must work at Ostara’s. (Ha! That’s a call back to last week’s joke about my favorite little coffee joint. Because the best jokes are always the ones you have to explain.) Speaking of Ostara’s (that was a really satisfying segue), I stopped in for my usual decaf caramel macchiato (thank you, spell check) last Thursday while out delivering Exit Zero magazine, and the lady put on my sippy lid right in line with the seam of the cup like some kind of psychopath! I mean, that’s crazy, right? No? Just me? Okay then… Speaking of Exit Zero magazine (man, that’s good segue), if you’re the person who insists on slicing open the palettes of new magazines in the wee hours every Thursday morning to get your two copies then leaving the rest to soak in the rain, please know that everyone here

June 27, 2019 hates you. Pardon me one second. (Goes to see Toy Story 4 with son Henry at Harbor Square Theater in Stone Harbor after a sausage pie at Stone Harbor Pizza Pub. Both were excellent.) Okay, I’m back. Apology of the Week: To the very friendly-looking older couple sitting at Lance Vogel’s desk at Bank of America, probably applying for a mortgage or something, who looked suitably bewildered when I barged in and said, “Tell cousin Frank I can be his T.J. McConnell. A limited skillset, but feisty as all get out.” I set a new personal record with 17 sneezes in three minutes the other night. Lastly this week, a couple of goodbyes. First, I did not know Ernie Trionfo in any meaningful way. Like any Cape May musician I’d heard his name several thousand times, how great a guitar player he was, how good a dude. But our paths rarely crossed. Because of this, a flowery farewell felt unearned, and I wasn’t going to say anything until a good friend reminded me that the people who are hurting from his absence can always use a kind word. So I’ll offer this; when an entire community goes into mourning, it becomes very clear the positive impact you made. Farewell to you, Ernie. And peace and comfort to Patty Blee. Second, I became friends with Bill Caterini around 2010. It was not long after that I met his mother Elaine and swiftly became her friend. Elaine has left us. She was everything you wanted in an Italian mother: “Sit. Eat. Talk.” The kitchen table was her courtroom. She always made me feel welcome and she always made me feel looked after. She’d seen and done just about all of it and is now off on her next adventure. She will be sorely missed. All my love to Bill, Nancy, Corinne and their extended family. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

saw the damndest thing the other day, when out walking with Young Albert. We were having our usual Summer Evening Adventure – offending Shoebies and biting their ankles (the former me, the latter Albert for the most part, though I have been known, when driven to distraction, to drop to all fours and take a nip out of the offender’s Achilles tendon), pausing for photographic images of ourselves beside tourists, and dispensing lifestyle advice to those fortunate enough to cross our paths. We had just finished listing the flaws in a group from Philly (“Sir, your waistline is greater than your pants’ inside leg measurement: eat less!”, “Madame, you sound like the offspring of a donkey and a bullhorn. Speak less, and with more forethought: a maximum of 40 words in any one exchange!”) and were gathering our breath before tackling a brace of New Yorkers whose loud tones were harming the air quality, when we saw it. Picture one of those diabolical cross-bred monsters that go by the generic description of “doodles”. I think it was an emotionally needy

Whoodle (a Wheaten Terrier, which I approve of, and a poodle, which I admire). Moreover, it was sporting a diaper. One that appeared to me made specifically for dogs. All thoughts of lecturing the owner about her taste in canines went right out the window, replaced by a burning desire to ask “WHY?” Which I did, in exactly those tones, with the words “IN GOD’S GREEN EARTH?” added. She was remarkably composed and verged on “arrogant”, which is all one might expect from someone putting a diaper on a dog.

Find Your Way Back...

“I simply loathe having to scoop up feces and then bag it!” she declared, as if I was the idiot. “This way, all that needs done is a diaper change! Isn’t that just DARLING?” “Madame,” I intoned, “diapers are for humans under two years old and over 80. I bid you and your infantilized hound, good night and good riddance!” Scathing though I was (I expect she had to go straight to the nearest ER to receive treatment for the scorch marks my comment left) she had a point. Not about the diapers, but about the nuisance of people leaving bags filled with dog poop, as if somehow their having bagged the stuff is all that is needed, and the Poop Fairy will come along later. Which is not the case, now, as we stopped that particular deity’s retainer as an austerity measure. But really, the current system, where we have stout men and women collect the bags — totaling 14,000 a week — and then drive them to the Cape May Municipal Recycling Trebuchet, to be loaded and then fired over towards Wildwood, is time consuming and expensive... though hugely satisfying.

T

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, film camp

here is magic in moviemaking. Humans have been doing it for about 150 years, and I’m still amazed by the mechanics of the process. Someone — or many someones, as credit should be shared among Louis Daguerre, Henry Fox Talbot, the Lumiere brothers, Thomas Edison and more — found a way to capture images by letting light filter through an artificial eye onto a bit of glass covered in chemicals. Today, we capture images on a computer chip and display them with microscopic mirrors or liquid crystals. Moving pictures may have begun to settle a wager — supposedly, Leland Stanford bet someone $25,000 that horses simultaneously lift all four feet and paid Eadweard Muybridge to prove it — but movies serve many purposes. We watch films on our phones to learn how to unclog a drain or solve differential equations or speak Italian. We send short clips to family members when the baby says something cute. We document news and weather. Most magically, we tell stories. Under the charm of a movie, we scream,

laugh, and cry. We bond over the experience, if only to argue about the ending. We showcase the wonders and horrors of nature and of mankind. When we can’t change real life, we turn to reel life and escape with Wonder Woman — no man’s land, indeed. Or Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire — crying when Cedric Diggory’s father calls out, “My boy!” We swoon when Darcy hands Elizabeth into the carriage, even if he’s not played by Colin Firth, and cheer when Tarajii P. Henson climbs the ladder to that chalkboard in Hidden Figures. We laugh at Some Like it Hot and dance to Singin’ in the Rain. Flickers of light elicit these

reactions because talented people cast their spells. All the greats started somewhere. Ten-year-old Steven Spielberg commandeered his father’s eight millimeter camera. Ava DuVernay started with a 12-minute film. This week, budding Cape May filmmakers will be creating their first projects. Since 2001, the Cape May Film Society has hosted a Teen Film Camp designed to teach young people the basics of filmmaking. For five days, students will write, shoot and edit short films with the guidance of an adult instructor. You may see these junior creatives roaming around town in costume, retracing their steps to get a scene right. On Friday night, they’ll share the films with their families, and some will be magical. The camp has earned its reputation, and is already sold out this year. Plan ahead for your 10 to 18 year old next year. Tuition is $225. Visit newnjstatefilmfestival.com for information. For a glimpse at other talented local teens, check out the East Lynne Theater Company’s student workshop production, Monday, June 1 at 8:00. Admission is free.

The Movie Column

“Toy Story 4” is reviewed by Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

T

here was a risk to me seeing Toy Story 4 without Aly and Julia, my daughters. Part of it is because I might not like the new movie. The first three iconic installments, started in 1995, represent Hollywood’s perfect trilogy. I’m probably the only movie reviewer who says this, and I stand by the claim. But would 4 be the one that bombs? Here’s the real risk of seeing Toy Story 4 without my kids. We’ve always seen these movies together, sometimes wanting to see them again! My kids are grown now, and we can’t always coordinate schedules, so I’m in the theater without them. What if I didn’t want to see this one again because it’s terrible? This time, the story starts simply enough. With Andy off to college, Bonnie is the new kid in the toys’ lives. But things are different in Bonnie’s room. She takes the sheriff’s badge off of her Woody doll and pins it on Jessie the cowgirl. Many times, Woody sits in the toy chest collecting dust balls. Hey, he’s not her favorite toy — it happens.

Bonnie is heading to kindergarten orientation, and she’s anxious and upset. The always dutiful Woody is compelled to sneak into her backpack to join her. He scurries unseen to help her when another kid takes all her art supplies. She suddenly finds art supplies in front of her, and she creates her own creature from a spork and eyeballs and pipe cleaners for arms. Forky is the new “toy’s” name. He thinks of himself as trash.

Getting him to think of himself as important to Bonnie is a challenge. If that were the only storyline, there wouldn’t be much of a story. Unbelievably, the writers have done it again. Bonnie’s family takes one last road trip before kindergarten officially starts, and the filmmakers take us on a journey that explores some very deep subjects with hilarious twists and turns along the way. Bo Peep returns to the series as a road warrior loner and Buzz learns to listen to his inner voice. Woody must learn one of the greatest lessons of all: the importance and power of moving on. It brings in so many of the wonderfully insightful elements of the last three films yet somehow puts us on a brand new trajectory. This film is a masterpiece in G — family friendly, extremely funny, and deeply moving. Suffice it to say I need to see this film again... yes, while it’s still in theaters. And if my daughters are around, I’d love to take them with me. If we don’t see it together, if they see it without me, that’s okay, too. Lesson learned, Woody. Lesson learned.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I made plans for a girls’ weekend. I thought it would be fun to have a day at the beach, stay at a B&B, have dinner at George’s and enjoy a concert in Rotary Park with cocktails afterwards at The Brown Room. I noticed that everyone was in except one of my closest friends. When I asked her why I hadn’t heard from her, she said she simply couldn’t afford it. I feel so badly. It never occurred to me. Of course she can’t afford it. Because of health issues, she can only work part-time, but I never realized it was such a struggle. I would pay for the whole weekend, but I’m afraid that will embarrass her even more. I really want to make this right. — Clueless Dear Clueless From the outset, you should have told

Wise answers to perplexing questions

her she would be your guest, but as you point out, you didn’t consider how tight her finances are. The lesson for the future is mindfulness and the need to be aware of others’ troubles. In all fairness, she probably does not act as though she is struggling. She probably does not want anyone to know and that is why you didn’t pick up on it. Why not ask her to join you on the beach? Offer to treat her to dinner and she can surely join you for the concert at Rotary Park which is free. Tell the rest — if they too are unaware

of her circumstances — that dinner is an early birthday present. Dear Answer Lady My girlfriend says I dress like a slob and she’s paranoid that I’ll show up for her family’s annual July 4 barbecue “dressed like John Belushi in Animal House.” I don’t want to embarrass her but I’m never going to be on the cover of GQ. I think she should just accept me as I am — and so should her family. What say you, Answer Lady? I told her I’d do what you say. — Fashionably Slobby Dear Slobby One afternoon does not a re-do make. Go to Galvanic and get yourself some trendy duds. First of all, you’ll shock your girlfriend, and that should be good for a few days of positives vibes. Secondly, it’ll make you feel good. Every once in a while, it’s good to move out of you comfort zone. You’re still the same person and how you interact with your girlfriend’s family will not change. The clothing is superficial, but why not take an opportunity to make a good impression. And no, you cannot take the clothes back after the barbecue.

Bird Droppings

S

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

o much has been made of the shorebird horseshoe crab link that other important elements may have been overlooked. I just learned for instance that Herring Gull nesting has decreased by 89% in Maine, large gulls take five years to mature. During this time they have nothing to do but find food and not become food themselves. I noted many years ago that the shores of Delaware Bay from Reeds Beach to Egg Island Point are paved with sub-adult Herring Gulls May through July. The birds are feasting not on crab eggs but the dead and dying remains of horseshoe crabs that died in the procreative effort. I’m wondering if the lack of adult crabs impacted Herring Gull populations as well as Red Knot? We’re talking about of thousands of gulls here, generations of gulls drawn to the bounty of dead and dying crabs. And yes, gulls are not dependent upon crab eggs as the knot is. Gulls are omnivorous and its long been speculated that open landfills fueled the recovery of the Herring

Gull in the early 20th century. Once hunted for their feathers tp fuel the fashion trade, Herring Gull was extirpated as a breeder in Maine where their cry is, now, iconic. But the population trend is not promising. We may yet live to see an age when Herring Gulls are once again, rare. Landfills are increasingly uncommon, too. When I first came to Cape May, there was a landfill in West Cape May and my first gull watching trip was to the Hackensack Meadowlands whose bounty of edibles now

lies beneath a blanket of grass and a nature preserve. I have no doubt that gulls will find a way. Hardy, inquisitive and able to ingest anything but strychnine and fish hooks, my money is on the gulls. Yet and still, the diminishment of Herring Gull numbers is just one more reminder that the natural world is dynamic and we as part of that dynamic influence the lives of other living things by what we do and don’t do. The diminishment of large gulls should prove a boon to terns whose eggs and young are predated upon by gulls, but time will tell. Laughing Gull numbers, too, were affected by the over harvest of crabs. In fact I suspect, based upon my personal observations, that the primary food source for young gulls was horseshoe crab eggs. Not French fries as many a tourist might suspect. Over hundreds of hours of observation, I never saw a single fry fed to a nestling. But I freely admit to a potential sampling bias. My observations were conducted in May/June, before the peak tourist season.

MYSTIC is a handsome, two year old boy who arrived at the shelter confused and forlorn. He has blossomed into a dog who loves human companionship and eagerly looks forward to his time outside the kennel. Mystic is becoming adjusted to a crate which makes the transition to new home easier. He loves to snuggle and will even climb into laps if offered!

JACK is a 4 year old miniature pincher mix. He lived with a family including children, another dog and cats prior to coming to the shelter. Jack is crate trained. He enjoys playing with toys, taking walks, riding in the car and simply relaxing outside in the sunshine. He is very affectionate but can take time to warm up to strangers. Meet Jack today!

Robert Panaccio, VMD Robert Moffatt, VMD Nancy Reilly, VMD Patricia J. Link, DVM

REDS is a four year old boy with a perpetual smile. Whether he is watching potential adopters walk by his kennel or running in the yard after a tennis ball, he is always smiling! Reds lived with a family but when his owner moved, there was no room for this big boy to go with them so he is at the shelter waiting for another family to adopt him. Adopt today!

CUDDLES refuses to be ignored, especially when it’s time for dinner. If you don’t speak cat, that’s okay he’ll still talk to you anyway. Cuddles loves to be pet and chin scratches are his favorite. He get along with other cats too! Cuddles doesn’t know why someone would just leave him outside, but he’s ready to find his new home! (FIV+)

ROCK got his name because he’s a tough guy on the outside with a heart of gold on the inside! If you come meet him, Rock will be sure to steal all of your attention. He likes being pet and brushed, but he also loves playtime! Don’t worry about his eye, Rock got hurt a long time ago when he was living on the streets but it’s not a worry anymore! (FIV+)

DEJA was supposed to be fixed and then put back outside, but was offered a chance. She was given the opportunity to prove that she can be someone’s special kitty. That she could stay warm indoors and not have to fight for her scraps. Deja’s gentle demeanor is what saved her life from the outdoors and is what will change your heart to leaving her behind.
