The Fourth At Congress Hall Throughout its 200-year history, Congress Hall has hosted a Fourth of July celebration. Now, this celebration has become a week-long party. The capstone is a family picnic on the lawn (or lobster bake in the ballroom) as well as carnival games and music. After this year’s picnic, visitors and locals decked out in red, white and blue were treated to a fireworks display, accompanied by “oohs” and “ahhs” from the crowd. God Bless America... and Cape May, too!

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

The Pink See-Through Fantasia (that’s its real name!) is a swimming cucumber discovered in 2007 in the western Pacific. The transparent, pinkish-hued body makes for totally visible intestines and internal organs. The creature also glows in the dark in order to scare predators. Unlike most sea cucumbers, who stay on the sea floor, this guy uses a wing-like collar around the mouth to swim.

Cape May was inhabited only by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans until 1609. That year, Henry Hudson became the first white man to sail around the Cape. While he didn’t succeed in his mission, which was to discover a new route from Europe to Asia, he did go back to Europe talking about this cool new peninsula he found. This inspired other explorers to make the trip. Among them was Captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, spelled M-E-Y, in 1621. He fell so in love with the humidity he discovered here (no kidding!) he decided to name this place after himself: Cape Mey. Unfortunately for him, this was before the time of proofreaders, so this was quickly misspelled on charts and maps as Cape May, M-A-Y.

Disappearing Earth By Julia Phillips Set on a remote Russian peninsula, this novel tells the story of that community, and of two sisters who mysteriously disappear from it.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: PigDog beach bar in Wildwood. Specifically, it’s located at Mariner’s Pier and the boardwalk. Brought to you by the Morey family of Morey’s Piers fame. The name: It refers to a particular surfing stance in which the rider is crouched low with a bent front knee and extended back leg. (It kinda resembles a hunting dog dragging a wild pig.) The vibe: No shoes? No problem. When we say beach bar, we mean beach bar. This place is family, dog, and bathing-suit friendly. The occasion: Jack Wright’s birthday. The seating: We took Flotsam, one of two private wooden cabanas offering its own server, an excellent view of the ocean and lounge chairs and a table. (The other is called Jetsam). The water park: PigDog is adjacent to Raging Waters, and we took advantage. Yes, that was us you saw desperately trying to keep our inner tubes upright. We flipped out of them at every possible turn in the Sky Pond, which sends riders on a slide into four elevated pools before a final splash. Graceful, we were not. But we took a turn in the Lazy River to recover from the harrowing experience. The MVP: That would be Jack, the Scotsman who moves less like a fish and more like a frantic orangutan when exposed to water. But, he persevered. “You don’t have to cheer for me like a tiny child each time I make it down a slide alive,” he told the rest of the group. The MOAB: That’s shorthand for The Mother of all Bloody Marys, and boy is it tasty when you’re feeling slightly, ahem, waterlogged. It comes in a 32-ounce pitcher with a garnish of barbecue brisket, pickled shrimp, fries, a chicken tender, wings, pigs in a blanket, cheese, olives, cucumber and, for the traditionalists, celery. The food: We ordered a delectable smorgasboard of pork sliders, coastal shrimp salad sliders, a sausage griller with Beyond (plantbased) sausage, and brisket quesadillas. Then we ran out of the cabana for a dip in the ocean to burn it all off. The server: Greta. We loved her. The final splash: Sometimes, it’s fun to spend a whole day playing tourist. It’s especially fun at PigDog.

Bartender Of The Week This week, Kyle Rodriguez from the Rusty Nail is up. How long have you been bartending? Three years. Favorite drink to make? A Mexican frose and a pina colada because all I have to do is push a button! What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer tells me there’s not enough alcohol in their drink. Dream job? To be a professional golfer.

The Signature Dish Place: Harry’s Ocean Bar & Grille Chef: Mark Ehrhardt Signature dish: Clam chowder! It’s won Cape May’s annual contest seven years running. Secret ingredient? “Wouldn’t be secret if I told you,” Mark says. “But it’s made with highquality, local ingredients.” Bonus: It’s hearty enough to be an entrée. Not full yet? The baked brie app, served in a pastry shell with raspberry jam and fresh fruit, is dynamite, too.

Wine Of The Week Sunset Liquors Proud Pour Sauvignon Blanc $18.99 A bright, refreshing wine with a rich bouquet of flavors. Hints of citrus, melon and stone fruit transition onto the palate, accompanied by a pleasant minerality and vibrant acids that finish smoothly. This wine’s balanced profile and clean finish are sure to please any oysterlover. Pairs well with shellfish.

Undertow

H

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

ere we are, at the Underest of Tows, a mere 36 hours past deadline as my editor taps his foot, staring at his email, waiting for this little gem to appear in his inbox. (Why does that sound dirty?) This column is one of the few things I control in my life, so I like to hang onto it as long as possible. So what if that means Jack Wright ends up in a slightly earlier grave waiting for it? To me, it will all be worth it. And speaking of slightly earlier graves, what better place to wish a happy birthday to Cape May’s favorite irascible, cantankerous, furry Scotsman than right here in the column he is so calmly and patiently (read: neither calmly nor patiently) waiting for? So I hope you’ll all join me in wishing Jack a happy 63rd birthday with many happy returns. Or many regular returns. Or unhappy returns. As long as there’s a lot of them. Happy birthday, boy-o! (And if you’ll allow one sincere moment; thank you for taking a chance on this unknown writer back in 2003. The Undertow has been a transformative occurrence in my life.)

Can’t wait for your wife Diane’s 19th birthday, which is swiftly approaching... As we left off last week, my vocal chords were on life support after four gigs in four days with a fifth staring me in the face. I am pleased to report that I and, more importantly, my voice, survived. It was only after four days off that it clamped up on me Saturday night at Exit Zero Filling Station, and remained at DefCon 1 through my Rusty Nail and Carney’s gigs this past weekend. Sigh… On the bright side, I haven’t yet gotten that one really awful summer cold I get every year

and at this point in the season I think it’s safe to say that I don’t think I will and it’s standing right behind me, isn’t it. Much thanks to Sue Polcer for filling in Saturday night at EZFS (which was oddly quiet, then oddly mobbed). My regular wing man, Tim Joyce, was out of town, making this the fourth Terry O’Brien-related musical concern Sue has now been part of (Love Me Dudes, The Strangers, The Terry O’Brien Band and now The Terry O’Brien Band Duo. One more she gets a free set of steak knives). Exit Zero Filling Station has been slamming the last few weeks and, like every other business in the country, is a little shorthanded (thanks, Trump). So if you or anyone you know is looking for an extra kitchen or bartending shift, drop by. You will be hired. Conversely, if you are a guest of ours and things aren’t going 100% according to Hoyle, perhaps use a little of that human empathy. A vast, overwhelming majority of you do. The other four go on Yelp. ing Station, especially when the gas station runs out of gas, but… Hahahahahaha! Who am I kidding? That’s hilarious. Everybody point and laugh! But where was I? Sunday was O’Brien & Joyce at Rusty Nail and it was reliably awesome. Longtime Terry O’ke sufferers Shannon Spadt and John Perkins popped by for a drink. She got to Hollywood Round on American Idol, he… is her boyfriend. Where did they meet? Terry O’ke! One of about two dozen long-term couples borne out of drunkenly singing other people’s songs, and one of the three that are still together. Jon Sachar also popped in for a bit and, for the first time in a few months, my first instinct was not murderous rage. Sunday was The Terry O’Brien Band at Carney’s and I gotta tell, this band? Pretty good. And getting better now we’re playing a regular schedule. This week’s gig was the tightest yet, the dance floor full from “Help!”, our first song, to “Purple Rain”, our 42nd. People have embraced this multi-tribute format, which is awesome, because we had no idea what to expect. Turns out, if you play great songs by great artists, audiences will enjoy it. Who knew? Did I mention that last week my wife Cathrine got up to do a few songs with us? And that my youngest son Henry, 13, stole the show by singing “Piano Man”? After which all the girls were fawning over him and going, “Oh, Henry”? Shockingly, he now wants to be a musician. Speaking of music (lamest segue ever), I stirred up a bit of Facebook controversy this week by sharing a meme titled “Every Grateful Dead Album Ranked: They all came in last.” I find this hilarious because I couldn’t name one Grateful Dead song I like beyond “Touch of Grey”, which every Grateful Dead fan hates. But hoo boy, did a lot of Dead fans come out swinging, despite my repeated sentiment that I respect their place in the pantheon. I don’t get it, but I don’t care if you do. But apparently I’m

July 11, 2019 some kind of idiot for not recognizing their brilliance as greater and more influential than The Beatles. Okay? I guess? Sure? Art is 100% subjective, and I can’t help it if your taste sucks. But I can still love all you sinners, even if I hate the sin. Days Without Smoking: 1. My erstwhile castmate, Parker Smith, and I have a road trip lined up for later this week. We’re carpooling up to Philly for a commercial audition. I think we’re both up for the same part, Afircan-American Trans-Lesbian in wheelchair. I think I have a slight edge; I am a lesbian trapped in a man’s body. Thinking of you, Cousin Ray. Hang tough. I would trade a good percentage of my god-given vocal talents for a working idea of how my car defrosters operate. Pit Bull: 1. Dom Piro’s Face: 0. (Dom is a friend, an excellent bartender at the Nail, and proud owner of a third nostril.) Does no one on the internet know how to spell masturbate? Once you know that Carney’s door guy Kurt Seer, Sr is the father of Carney’s chief cook and bottle washer Kurt Seer, Jr it seems impossible not to have known it before. Reminds me of the first time I met my wife; I knew her last name was Fiorentino, I had just watched The Last Seduction starring Linda Fiorentino on HBO, I kept telling Cathrine she reminded me of a movie actress, and what was my first guess? Elisabeth Shue. Not so swift on the uptake sometimes this guy writing this sentence. That’s all for this week. In case Jack forgets to put my ad in (again), you can catch me and Frank Maione (piano and vocals) at Mayer’s on the deck 7-10. Saturday Sue and I are back at Exit Zero, 6-10, piano and vocals. Sunday is The Terry O’Brien Band at Carney’s, 9-1. Monday is O’Brien & Joyce, 4-8 at Rusty Nail. And Tuesday is Terry O’ke at Carneys. Come listen and/or sing and/or drink! ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

have a complicated relationship with golf. Less so with golfers, who I regard as a pox. Especially those in little electric carts, excepting the morbidly obese, or people missing legs. Mostly, my scorn is because of the abominable fashion choices. And because ever since the military tradition of Cape May Offensive Golfing was outlawed in 1919, the “sport” is nothing more than rotund pink men chasing tiny balls around with sticks. You haven’t heard of Offensive Golf? It started off as a desperate measure by besieged settlers trying to stave off a Lenape Indian attack. The alternative version of this story, and one that I am forced to concede is more likely, is that it was a cruel sport designed by aggressive colonials, who, having run out of disease-carrying blankets to give to the original owners of the land, started hitting smooth stones with long sticks, aiming at the sickly Indians. Thus the origin of the phrase “hole in one” — it originally had the words “I hit, and made a” before “hole in one”. Well, we moved on, eventually, but the law requiring every town in this part of New Jersey

to supply a militia “armed withe stout sticks and no less than a dozen lead balls no smaller than a plum, and able to strike a rain barrel 100 yards away no less than nine times from ten in one minute” was not repealed. So when World War One came along, The Cape May Good Pals Regiment packed their clubs and ammunition and marched off to the front. Well, to the docks, obviously — the front was rather a long way off in France. As it happened, a storm blew up as the two ships left The Point. Luckily, the troopship was able

Find Your Way Back...

to weather it, but the larger concrete vessel carrying 10,000 lead shot balls, sank right off the beach. So the Good Pals, arriving at the trenches, were forced to improvise, and modified the early hand grenades to be a little more round, and added a heavier end to the clubs to accommodate the extra weight. Soon, they were driving grenades all the way from their trenches to the enemy’s! And when the lines were close together, they invented the “putter” with which to tap a grenade gently into a foxhole. We brought the sport home, of course, and for a year, Cape May’s Offensive Golf Tourney attracted skilled and demented veterans from all over the world. Sadly, during the final, which was sponsored by the rather rough blended “Pogue Mahone” whisky, one of the golfers sliced a grenade and it went clean through a window in the Admiral Hotel, where not only 3,000 bottles of the whisky but several thousands of grenade rounds were stored. That ended not just the hotel, but the sport’s license, I am sad to report.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the classic backyard barbecue

ooking over an open flame is a technique as ancient as mankind itself, but call it barbecue and you’re cooking in style. The word comes from the indigenous people of the Caribbean islands, who built frames of green wood to cook fish and pigs. Often, a bowl in the flame would catch the drippings, which would later be used to make broth. The local pigs were wild, with none of the layers of fat of domesticated pigs. Cooks learned to let the meat roast slowly, over several hours, to create a tender meal. Christopher Columbus and friends heard the native word for the technique as “barbacoa,” which became “barbacado” in Spanish and “barbecue” in English, appearing in print as early as 1648. In America, barbecue s both a noun and a verb, and it is used as a synonym for grilling, or to describe various regional cooking techniques, most of which include cooking a protein low and slow on a grill, smoker or pit. There are disputes over what constitutes “real” barbecue, but anything goes — whatever you like best is authentic. Pork rules in

some areas and beef in others, and, in Kentucky, it’s mutton. Some chefs prefer a vinegar-based sauce on the protein, others like mustard, still others honey. Vegetarians are staking their claims to barbecue as well, with cauliflower steaks, zucchini planks and even grilled lettuce gaining prominence. For your Cape May barbecue, stock up on supplies. Swap out your propane tank at the Exit Zero Filling Station. Visit Westside Market on Broadway in West Cape May for burgers, hot dogs, and steaks — bring your own bags because they are going green. Pick up sausages at Gaiss’ Market, 1215 Bayshore

Road in the Villas, and grill them up before adding them to your tomato sauce. For fish, try the Lobster House fish market — the line moves quickly and you usually encounter a neighbor or two to chat with while you wait or H&H Seafood. Pick up your produce at the West Cape May Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays, or at one of Cape May’s farm stands. Get local honey from the Cape May Honey Farm on Sunset. Forget the notion that grilling reduces the mess in the kitchen, as most dishes will require some chopping or marinating. It’s just more fun to cook outside. Even basic meals taste better — try a true grilled cheese using thick slabs of Lobster House bread. Encourage picky eaters to try something new — grilled asparagus is a revelation. Make a foil packet for sliced vegetables or delicate protein. If you’re in the mood for the pure protein without the heat, try Cape May’s House of Jerky on Liberty Way, off the Washington Street Mall. Finish off your barbecue with some ice cream from Fine Fellows, or try a Peace Pie.

Cape May Stage’s “Sylvia” reviewed by Veronica Scutaro

C

ape May Stage is presenting Sylvia, by A. R. Gurney, a laugh-out-loud look at middle age in America through August 2. Empty-nesters Greg (Michael Scott) and Kate (Kate McCauley Hathaway) pull up their suburban stakes and move to the big city. Kate pursues a new career and finds fulfillment, but Greg is stuck in his same old job and yearning for something more meaningful. Enter Sylvia, a stray dog Greg finds in the park and brings home — flea-infested, not housebroken, and definitely not the pet of Kate’s dreams. Greg falls in love with the dog and focuses so exclusively on the adoring canine that affections for his wife fade. Kate’s anger, frustration and hurt rise to a pitch that most people experience at some point in a relationship. Hathaway’s performance is a true portrayal of how a seemingly benign situation can quickly devolve into a battle of wills. Kate battles her husband and the stray dog, Sylvia, who is played by Kate Berg. Don’t get caught up in the fact that a woman is playing a dog. Think Screwtape Letters, wherein the woman plays the

cat. It works. Bravo, Ms Berg! Who will win this war for Greg’s love and attention? Scott and Hathaway play this couple to perfection. Their life together, their dedication, and their desires to grow are spot on. Through these emotions, humor emerges that keeps them energized enough to sustain “together.” Berg’s performance as Sylvia the dog is exceptional —her body language, gestures, facial expressions and views are truly canine. Anyone who has a dog or who talks to dogs will see DOG in Berg’s performance. There

are scenes in which the audience is completely convinced that the woman on the stage is a dog in a human body. The main comedy in this production comes from the many performances of Andy Prosky. His versatility hits the audience as he transforms himself from Tom, the neighbor with the manly dog, to Phyllis, the classic Upper East Side grande dame, to Leslie, the androgynous psychotherapist. Prosky is entire ensemble unto himself and what an ensemble it is! The dialogue in this play is filled with meaning and emotion and humor. The final message of compromise and kindness should not be lost in the humor. Roy Steinberg brings this realistic picture of life to a place where every dog lover wants a non-dog lover to be. The set is the quintessential upper East Side pre-war apartment, built-ins, glazed windows and all. And to quote the director who quotes Will Rogers: “If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.”

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I visited my daughter’s apartment for the first time last week. She lives in North Cape May and I live in Maryland. I still cannot get over how filthy it was. Clothes everywhere. Dirty dishes piled up in the sink. The bathroom and kitchen have not been cleaned since the day she moved in. I did not raise her this way and she was insulted when I called her lapses into question. Is there no threat I can level at her to make her understand the importance of neatness and cleanliness? It affects your ability to face the day or even life as far as I am concerned. – Mrs Clean Dear Mrs Clean See, here’s the problem — your need for order has, The Answer Lady suspects, made you an enabler who never taught your daughter how to maintain order on her

Wise answers to perplexing questions

own. Now that you are no longer around to hover, she has gone over to the slob side and embraced chaos either out of rebellion or sheer laziness. Maybe she’s waiting for you to come over and clean, again and again, and straighten things out. Maybe she doesn’t even notice. Although, she must have known how the sight of that would affect you. Fortunately for you, the solution is simple. Hire a cleaning service. The Answer Lady recommends Mark Chamberlain. We’ll even give you the number: 609-425-0693. If she’s making

enough money, she can pay for it. Otherwise, split it, but make her pay her fair share. Dear Answer Lady A gang of us went to Harpoon’s on the Bay to have dinner and watch the fireworks. When the bill came and it was all said and done — like after we were home — we realized that somehow one of the “team” never ponied up. What should we do now? Did he assume we were treating him, although we gave him no reason to think that? We said, “Everybody pitch in $30.” When we came up short, we thought we miscalculated and threw in the extra $30. Now what do we do? — Cheated Dear Cheated Get his money first next time. Bring it up nicely the next time you see him in case there was some misunderstanding. If so, he’ll pay right away, but if it was his intent to bilk you, he’ll deny it or tell you he’s “short” but will get it to you later. At least he will consider himself forewarned. As The Answer Lady’s daddy always said, “Sometimes it’s worth getting deceived just to find out the measure of a man.”

Bird Droppings

T

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

he Solstice is behind us. The earth has started the annual tilt on its axis that will end six months from now in winter. As you read these words, the first of autum’s southbound migrants are crossing over Canada, en route to refueling stations here in coastal New Jersey. Dowitchers and Lesser Yellowlegs are members of a pan-global family of birds that includes, sandpipers, plovers and other birds whose feet straddle the ocean and shore, the “shorebirds.” Most are long-distance migrants, using their powers of flight to exploit the seasonal riches of the northern summer and retreat to southern regions. It’s a good strategy providing your constitution is built for distance and speed, and providing you can refuel en route. That’s where New Jersey comes in. In spring, it’s the eggs of horseshoe crabs that give northbound birds that fill the fuel tanks of birds. In fall, it’s small invertebrates the birds exhume from mud and sand. The number of inverts is low in spring, hence the need for crab eggs. But now with

marshes teeming with life, the birds fan out, each species using its own species specific strategy to secure prey. Dowitchers are tactile feeders. Yellowlegs are visual hunters. Dowitchers probe, yellowlegs stab. Sandpipers feed on the run, plovers walk, stop pick like robins. Seen any Sandpipers on the beach, lately? No you haven’t. The Sandpipers, or Sanderling, are still in the Arctic, breeding. High Arctic breeders, Sanderling and Red Knot get a later start on

the nesting season than subarctic breeders. In fact, as the first subarctic breeders are heading south, the last of the high Arctic breeders, the White-rumped Sandpiper, is still heading north. All this coming and going is risky and demanding, so you might reasonably ask why birds don’t just stay here? Some do. But using different breeding strategies reduces competition and allows birds, because of their power of flight, to make the most of seasonal bounty, like the insect riches of the Arctic. You think New Jersey is buggy? Wait till you get to the tundra. Hundreds of thousands of acres of prime mosquito habitat. It’s why caribou walk into the wind and are sometimes forced to run to escape the blood-sucking cloud of insects. Sanderling? They’ll be back on our beaches by late July, many still showing traces of breeding plumage. It’s energetically expensive to molt, too, but if it wins you the right to mate, it’s worth the change of wardrobe.

FREE LECTURE/FILM SERIES

THUR., JULY 11, - PATRICIA CHAPPINE NEW JERSEY WOMEN IN WWII - 7PM Author Patricia Chappine speaks about her novel, “New Jersey Women in World War II” & hold a book signing!

July 11, 2019

6/29: Around 10pm In The Brown Room PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALEKSEY MORYAKOV

Chappine explores the pivotal roles that New Jersey women played during World War II. New Jersey women during this time did everything from enforcing blackout orders on the coast to selling war bonds. Even African American women who were fighting discrimination in their own country volunteered to help with war efforts. Doors will open at 6:30pm and the lecture will start at approximately 7:00pm.

DREAM is a beauty whose name truly reflects her personality. She came to the shelter with her housemate when her owners could no longer care for them. Her piercing blue eyes hold your attention as you walk through the shelter and she wears a perpetual grin. Dream would be a wonderful, companion for a family that is looking for an active, big girl.

JACK is a 4 year old miniature pincher mix. He lived with a family including children, another dog and cats prior to coming to the shelter. Jack is crate trained. He enjoys playing with toys, taking walks, riding in the car and simply relaxing outside in the sunshine. He is very affectionate but can take time to warm up to strangers. Meet Jack today!

MAXINE is a two year old German shepherd who lived with a family including children before coming to the shelter. It is reported that she was good with everyone in the family, but was not comfortable with outsiders. It is for this reason that Maxine came to the shelter. Maxine will be shown to potential adopters with an approved application and by appointment.

CUDDLES refuses to be ignored, especially when it’s time for dinner. If you don’t speak cat, that’s okay he’ll still talk to you anyway. Cuddles loves to be pet and chin scratches are his favorite. He get along with other cats too! Cuddles doesn’t know why someone would just leave him outside, but he’s ready to find his new home! (FIV+)

ROCK got his name because he’s a tough guy on the outside with a heart of gold on the inside! If you come meet him, Rock will be sure to steal all of your attention. He likes being pet and brushed, but he also loves playtime! Don’t worry about his eye, Rock got hurt a long time ago when he was living on the streets but it’s not a worry anymore! (FIV+)

BUBBA would love a great retirement home where he can relax, purr, love, eat, sleep and keep you company. Bubba doesn’t have a mean bone in his body so making him great with visitors and grand kids. He is in very good health for an older guy and is very clean. Bubba also doesn’t eat too much so he won’t cost you too much either! Adopt!
