SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS
Weird Sea Creature
Did You Know?
What We’re Reading
The creepy, freaky goblin shark has a pinkish hue, because the outer layer of its skin is actually see-through, meaning what you’re actually seeing is the blood pumping through its body. With its blade-like snout, the goblin shark is here to haunt your dreams. But no worries — while these guys exist in every ocean, there’s only been 45 identified in the world, and most of those hang near Japan. So it’s not likely you’re going to bump into one of these critters while paddling at the Cove.
In 1971, a 27-year-old Coast Guard officer, Tom Carroll (above), and his wife, Sue, opened the Mainstay Inn on Jackson Street. They decorated the century-old building with period antiques and rebranded it as a B&B, only a handful of which existed, sprinkled throughout New England and Sutter Creek, California. The Mainstay Inn, which now exists on Columbia Avenue, drew national attention with feature stories in Americana and New York magazines, igniting a bed and breakfast boom that would earn Cape May the unofficial title of Bed and Breakfast Capital of the World.
Little Fires Everywhere Celeste Ng Shaker Heights is a seemingly perfect suburban enclave in Cleveland, Ohio, where the lawns are manicured and orderly, and so are the people. That is, until one woman shakes things up for good. Named a best book of the year by The Washington Post.

Where We’re Eating
Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week
E
very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: On the water at the iconic Lobster House, a 500-seat restaurant under the umbrella of the Cold Spring Fish and Supply Company, which also operates a fishing fleet (which is why the fish at the LH is always so fresh), a fish market and a packing and shipping plant. This was our first trip to the restaurant following a recent renovation. The seats: We dined at the bar. It’s now been raised up — along with the floor of the restaurant — as a preventative measure for when storm surges cause the harbor to flood. You want your fish on your plate, after all… not swimming up to it. The vibe: Diehard fans of the LH will be glad to know: The change is very subtle. The look and spirit of the place are still intact. (Though the restaurant’s lovely bartenders say they get more of a cool “skilodge” vibe now that their heads are closer to the wood exposed beams of the ceiling.) The high-tops: Yep, they’re new… and lovely. The carpet is also new. But, no worries, it’s the same signature, custom tartan that’s always been specially made for the Lobster House by some lucky carpet maker, who gets a LOT of business from here every time there’s a flood (maybe not so much in the future, though). The food: Oysters rockefeller, which were perfectly briny and savory and delectable. Plus blackened redfish with a side of aptly named red bliss potatoes — it’s Jack’s go-to here. No meal at the Lobster House is complete without their famous onion bread, which Jack loves as much as he loves Diane (says Diane). Manhattans to wash it all down. The run-in: The O’Hara clan — Katie and parents Tommy and Nancy — who run Sunset Liquors on Sunset Boulevard, plus Katie’s boyfriend, avid cyclist Eddie Behrens, who you will also recognize from the liquor store crew. Katie and Eddie are among a handful of cool, energetic young people infusing new life into our little island. The takeaway: Don’t flounder (heh) — get thee to the Lobster House.

Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
hear jigsaws in my sleep, along with table saws, compressors, oscillating multi-tools (the worst — like a bad trip to the dentist), nail guns and drills. It’s like my life is sponsored by DeWalt. It wasn’t that long ago we went through months of renovations to get the new Exit Zero Filling Station open on August 1, and now here we are again, getting ready for ANOTHER opening (watch this space). My brother, a very practical and sensibe man, thinks I’m a nutcase. So does my wife and my parents. Yes, I may be addicted to renovations. But it seems like most of Cape May is joining in. I’ve never witnessed so many businesses getting a spruce-up. Which is why it was so difficult finding more than one or two places to eat dinner. That’s changed in the last week, with the Lobster House reopening (the bar is my go-to in the winter — the vibe is so authentically cool) and the relaunching of a beachfront gem, The YB. The restaurant was opened by The
Brothers Karapanagiotis (kudos if you get the Dostoevsky reference), Yianni and Pete, but has now been taken over by Brandon Stickle, a longtime employee, and chef Peter Gingerelli. The wife and I went there last Friday, along with Galvanic power couple, Ryan and Sam Platzer, and their baby son Jack. A few observations: 1. The food is superb, especially that pork belly starter. 2. The renovation (there’s that word again) is inspiring. Brandon’s girlfriend
Corinne Rietheimer, aka the owner of Shore Soaps, did a fantastic job with a tight budget. 3. Little Jack Platzer is one of the coolest babies I’ve ever met and might yet inspire us to bring a kid into this messed-up world. Ryan and Sam have gone through their own share of renovations — they opened up a striking new store on the mall a few years back, then took over the old Cucina Rosa and did a huge redo on that building, while also making a pretty gorgeous home for themselves in the Historic District — so gorgeous that recently a lady visiting from Montreal was inspired to walk in the front door to check out the kitchen. Mon dieu! Last week, I mentioned I would get the total amount of cash raised from the Ice Ball at Congress Hall on February 9. Only the princely sum of $190,000. An amazing achievement. The dollars will go towards turning the war memorial at Columbia and Gurney into a park.

Bartender Of The Week This week, Nicole Douglass from The Mad Batter is up. How long have you been bartending? Seven years. Favorite drink to serve? A vanilla vodka white Russian because they are delicious! What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers ask me and the other bartender for the same thing, so we both wind up making/getting it! Dream job? To be a meteorologist.
Chef’s Signature Dish Place: 5 West Pub Chef: Paul Negro Signature dish: Crab cake tacos. “Hands-down the top seller,” said owner Paul Negro. “I’ve never seen a crab cake taco anywhere else... only fish.” But it’s not just novelty that makes the dish — it’s taste. It comes with housemade coleslaw, tomato relish, pepper mayo, sliced avocado and fresh cilantro on flour tortillas.
Wine Of The Week Joe Canal’s Discount Liquor Chateau Beauchene 2016 Cotes Du Rhone - $13.99 30 to 50 year old vines have produced a wine with an inviting, expressive, slightly peppery nose. A medium-weight style, it has freshness and aromatic detail, with gently saline tannins and bright acidity riding in on the finish. This would make a great house wine, at home or in a restaurant.

The Exit Zero Filling Station Ambush Come get gas at our place and you might just get lucky!
It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places — from $3 off fudge to $15 off dinner. It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into the Creegans from Ridgewood, NJ, who were headed home after a day trip to Cape May. We asked them to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. They picked out a $10 discount for Fins Bar and Grille. And who would they like to share this discount with? Teddy Roosevelt.

Undertow
W
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
elcome to the third week of February! It only feels like the 23rd week of February. How can 28 days take 1,000 days? I’m coming to you live this week from the cozy confines of Undertow Central (my house in beautiful, downtown Erma) and have come to the startling realization that this thing is a lot harder to write when I’m NOT enclosed in glass and sniffing diesel fumes for 10 hours. Probably easier to read, but harder to write. I’d like to start this week with a big THANK YOU to everybody who came out to the Ugly Mug for Part 2 of the Seventh Annual Beatles Night, Cape May. And an equally big THANK YOU to the Ugly Mug for having us. Entertainment manager Chris Baeringer did a great job of putting up with my near-constant texting and Acute Audio Anxiety. I was like his neurotic new girlfriend for about two weeks there. And bar manager Amber Slawek did a great job brokering the deal quick-fast-in-a-hurry and providing us a home. I’ve bored you with this story a million
times by now, but May 23, 1993 I moved to Cape May for the summer, and the first place I hung out was the Ugly Mug, where I met the band I would eventually front for five years; Soutwind. So my love for the place is deep and abiding and I thoroughly enjoyed performing there with my amazing band. Actually, amazing may be a bit of an understatement. Transcendent is more like it. Seven years together, four with this current lineup. I don’t know how many Beatles bands were playing in America on Sunday, but I’d put this one up against any of them.
You know a band is good when I’m the weakest link, because I’m pretty awesome. There were many familiar faces among the crowd, including Randy and Wendy Redelico (DING!) who were only able to stay for one set. I guess there was some kind of big paint emergency in North Jersey. The Redelicos have been staunch supporters of mine since about 2005, when I was the center of an NPR story about my book (Murder-Oke) and my karaoke business and Randy’s singing was, um, featured. His version of “Sunrise, Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof will bring you to tears. (And I think the segment is still up on the NPR website.) Exit Zero’s hirsute head honcho Jack Wright came out for a set with sexy jet pilot Ken Rowan, who bought me a beer and a shot and I knew I liked him. Jack, as is his wont, took about 15 seconds to insult Suzanne Kulperger, who was there not taking candid photographs. Suzanne, an accomplished photographer whose work exudes something I’m not smart enough to articulate, has been dying to pho-

tograph my son Jackson, a ridiculously talented dancer (and great kid, according to Dennis Elia). I said, “Hey! Suzanne! How come you don’t want to photograph me?” She just stared at me blankly for about 30 seconds before bursting into fits of laughter. Maybe I have INNER beauty, Suzanne! Ya ever think of that!?! Okay, I made up that last part. But it seems like the kind of thing that could happen. Local gadabout John Cooke stopped in long enough to tell me (warn me?) that we’d probably get the post-Mad Batter Open Mic crowd, and he was not mistaken. The best band in the room may have been at Booth #12, where Brandon Smith, Mike Dempsey, Walt Sapsai, Jr, Lara DeCosta and Gregg Carpenter sat to watch and put unrelenting pressure on the lead singer. Kath Scullion and her Merry Band of Pirates were on hand to pillage and plunder. Cousin Ray Heslip showed my a few photos on his phone and I ACCIDENTALLY SWIPED! OH GOD, THE HORROR! Ray was showing off his extensive record collection. I used to think he was full of shit when he told me he had every record in the world. Now I think he’s still full of shit, but he does have an awful lot of records. Soon-to-be Filling Station co-gas-pumperr Francis “Don’t Call Me Francis” Mikulak and his lady fried Harley Quinn, I mean Victoria Defrancesco, were there and you don’t care because they’re from Wildwood. Pete and Lorraine Baldwin had the unmitigated audacity to show their faces after missing our January show. Ballsy. Lorraine was lovely, as always, and Pete either wore a sweet throwback Oakland As jersey or I was really drunk and it was just a T-shirt with an A on it. I was sick as a dog for the gig, as has become custom. At this point I think it must be 50% psychosomatic. But I can’t figure out why. I don’t have any unresolved mommy or daddy issues. He’s dead, she’s dead, I’m dead inside so there’s nothing
February 21, 2019 going on there. And it’s not like I sit around all week pulling out my eyelashes and gnashing my teeth worrying about the gig. But somewhere in there is the butterfly flapping it wings in China and causing a hurricane in Florida. Now, if you’ll pardon me, my OCD now requires that I go wash my hands for 17 minutes exactly. So it is with a sore body, sore throat and elated spirit that I say thank you to everyone who made Sunday night so incredible. Love Me Dudes return Friday, March 15 at Carney’s. Speaking of Carney’s, I and some other musically inclined fellow travelers are working on a deal that would bring you lots of Beatles and Billy Joel music on Sunday nights this summer, so stay tuned. As a warm-up I got to play a gig on Saturday with my old running mate Bill Caterini. We played Anglesea Pub for Happy Hour. They are putting the finishing touches on their renovations along with every other restaurant in the world and, again, you don’t care because it’s in Wildwood. Just go there. It’s nice. And I owe Sean McMullan money. I am quitting smoking. Honest to god, for real. By the time you read this it will have been four days since I last lit up (if I make it that long, which I totally will). I’ve been addicted to these things for about 27 years now so instead I’m going to try becoming addicted to being alive. Up next: alcohol. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha hahahahahahahahahaha! Sorry, sorry... Lastly this week, please join me in sending a good thought out to Charlie Walsh, who lost his beloved wife Dorothy last week. Charlie is a fine musician, a better man. I met him at the first Beatles Night in 2013, where he played the skins on a few tunes, and he has been a part of my life ever since. There has been no greater friend to the Cape May music community. Today, let’s all be a friend to Charlie. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
T
here are only three things in life that should be stuffed: turkeys, pillows and beavers. Actually, I only added that last because I once said it in reference to one of the moth-eaten specimens in my taxidermy wing, and a gaggle of my witless male descendants burst out in puerile giggling. Ever since, all I need do is utter the phrase and the irritating flock of relatives who hang around me in the vain hope that I will pass away and leave them a penny, either faint dead or shriek with laughter. I have determined that on the chance that I am struck by lightning or pierced through the heart by a sharp stake (the only two things that I know will cause my permanent death), in my will I will leave them each an actual stuffed beaver. How they will giggle, right up to the moment they realize that my last wishes also involve every one of them being buried in the D’Catur Pyramid (location classified for now) with me. I have been hearing talk about stuffed ballots. And by that I mean my faithless manservant, Kitchener, has been reading me the computer-newspaper, and is particularly
interested in those stories about vote rigging. I cannot fathom whether that is because of his own shady past (he washed up ashore after a shipwreck one night many decades ago, and has a birthmark on his left buttock that is either a map showing the location of Captain Kid’s treasure, or an upside-down cartoon of a pig) or because of his view that America is about to become a series of feuding kingdoms, much like that documentary Game of Thrones, but where everyone is a howling-mad Targaryen. Either way, I tend to agree with his glum
assessment that the democratic experiment here is not turning out so well, and that sooner rather than later we will have some blithering old white man or other who decides to stay on as president just until some “emergency” or other is settled, but while he’s there, why doesn’t he just make life easier for people like himself by making it intolerably hard for women, black people, gay people and anyone whose net worth is less than a billion dollars. So we are about to return, here in Cape May, to a system where every man, woman and simian (and some canines) gathers in the town center once a week and raises hands, paws or indeed any other digit that does not offend public decency, to decide matters large and small. If a rough head count is not enough to decide, then we will have an old-fashioned “sing-off” where opposing sides will be required to perform a song, and the most musical and coherent one wins the vote. To those very few of you who may sputter “but that makes NO sense” into your foaming craft beer, I say to you: “Compared, sir or madam, to WHAT?”

The Movie Column

ell, what did you think of the film Bohemian Rhapsody? I know, I know, you’re reading this for my review. Well, if you’re a fan of the hit music group Queen, you’ve undoubtedly seen this tribute to their lead singer (and pop icon as well as brilliant music writer/composer) Freddie Mercury. The story was well told, fantastically acted, and deserved all of the award nominations it has received and won. Admittedly, it made me buy tickets for the next Queen tribute band concert coming to my area. It’s not like I’m leading up to a drastic criticism of the movie — it’s just that when it’s time to give out awards, is it only the movies with serious money behind them that get the recognition? How many awards? Too many to count. Rami Malek, who plays Mercury, has been nominated for an Best Actor Oscar, and the film was nominated for Best Picture along with three other categories. Malek won the Golden Globe for acting and the film for best in the Drama category. He was also
By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
awarded Best Actor at BAFTA (the British film awards) and Screen Actors Guild. Do we love Malek’s portrayal so much... or do we love Freddie Mercury so much? He was an icon, and his songs touched many of us (true, not all of us) in a personal way. My favorite is still “Somebody to Love” and the title track in this case, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” When you look at the other performances for Best Actor, they all seem like good candidates. But when you think of the
Find Your Way Back...
characters they’re portraying... well, can you compare Dick Cheney to Freddie Mercury? I guess time will tell what the Academy feels about these two performances, and the others. For Malek, this has been a huge success and a big win already. Mr Robot, a television series, has been his claim to fame thus far... but I’m not much of a TV guy. This is his breakout role. If you haven’t heard his name thus far, Oscar or not, you’ll be hearing it much more. So how does the film stack up to its competitors? When you spend the money they did to recreate the Live Aid experience, you know it’s worthy of the nomination. When you see the field of nominated films, you know that nearly every one of those selections is worthy of being there. Celebrity seems to win out every time, but let’s see if that will be the case. Join us for the BEST Oscar Party in New Jersey — Sunday February 24 from 3-7pm at Aleathea’s! Visitnewnjstatefilmfestival.com to learn more.

P
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, fireside chats
resident Franklin Delano Roosevelt took advantage of America’s love affair with new technology by delivering occasional radio addresses to his fellow citizens. His thirty “fireside chats” invited Americans to listen not as if they were at the president’s fireside, but as if he were at theirs — sitting with their families, hashing out the problems faced by the nation. FDR used common language to explain complex issues like the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the “Arsenal of Democracy,” and the geography of the foreign places that became the “battleground of civilization.” The talks were serious but confident. The issues he addressed, like “packing” the Supreme Court and introducing a social safety net, were controversial, but his speeches, carefully fact-checked and written and revised with the help of speechwriters, gained the trust of allies and rivals alike. FDR’s first fireside chat was shortly after his inauguration in 1933. He deftly defused the panic surrounding a banking emergency
with a speech that began, “My friends — I want to tell you what was has been done in the last few days, and why it was done, and what the next steps are going to be.” Reassured Americans put the bulk of their hoarded cash back into circulation. His last speech, shortly after D-Day, encouraged Americans to buy war bonds and credited citizens with a role in the progress of the war. Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945 at the age of 63, less than a month before Germany surrendered. You’re going to have to leave your own cozy fireside to hear chats on a variety of sub-
jects from Cape May’s scholars. Cold Spring Brewery offers free Thursday afternoon chats on a variety of topics. On February 21, it’s The Life of Sarah Spicer. Other topics include the American flag, Alice Paul, submarine warfare, baseball, and whaling. Visit coldspringbrewery.org for more information. Some speakers will take questions, but like FDR’s speeches, these events are mostly about listening. If you’d like to get your hands on the microphone, ask about the Cold Spring Brewery Open Mic nights, Fridays through March 29. Bring your own guitar. MAC’s Lunch and Learn series continues at Cape May United Methodist Church, 635 Washington Street, on Wednesdays at noon. Doors open at 11:30. Bring a bag lunch. Beverages and dessert are provided. $5 admission, free for MAC members. Topics include the music of the Titanic, Amelia Earhart, and Victorian medicine. Visit capemaymac.org for more information. For a more substantial lunch, MAC holds sessions at Lucky Bones for $20. Reservations (609-884-5404) are required.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I talk with my hands. Always have. I was at lunch with my girlfriends last week and spilled red wine on a friend’s white sweater. I felt awful. I offered to have it cleaned but I have to say... she did nothing to make me feel better and, in fact, told me the sweater was the last present her mother gave her before she passed away. Was that necessary? Did she have to volunteer that to make me feel worse? I want to make amends. What do you suggest I do? Buy a new sweater? — Red Faced Dear Red Here’s a helpful hint: You might want to consider white wine when out amongst the public, given those pesky hands. It’s true that your friend could have taken the high road, but it is also true that she truly did despair of the stain and the long-lasting repercussions.
Wise answers to perplexing questions
The Answer Lady is confident that an application of hydrogen peroxide lifted the stain out and that “all’s well that ends well.” It might behoove you to offer to take your friend to lunch at Fins as atonement. If she turns you down, you’ll know you are still in the doghouse, but most likely she has forgotten or resolved the issue by now. Have courage. Dear Answer Lady Our annual family gathering was last month. It’s a celebration dinner of my mother’s and my younger sister’s birthdays
which are within days of each other. It’s been like this since my sister was one. I barely get a card on my birthday but here’s my real problem. How old do I have to be before my mother stops showing my younger sister favoritism — to the point of telling people how proud she is of her “Cover Girl” daughter. (They were both models — on a MINOR scale.) I am tempted to just stop attending but never have the courage. — Ignored Dear Ignored Sibling rivalries are as old as Caine and Abel — look how that ended. The Answer Lady knows this is easier said than done — BUT the best thing you can do is to ignore her. Dismiss her and act as though you don’t care. There is something wrong with someone that sadistic. Mean-spirited people prey on what they perceive are your weaknesses. Do not show that face. Boycotting the family gatherings gives her a win. But you could well miss one or two. Schedule a cruise next year. In the meantime, you need to restore your chi. Pay a visit to Good Scents. Just walking through the door is a healing experience.

Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
I
woke to a new sound for 2019 this morning... the sound of a Mourning Dove calling, cooah-coo-coo-coo. Many people mistakenly ascribe the call to an owl. No, just Mourning Doves announcing the beginning of a new breeding season. For this prolific Columbid, breeding “season” is something of a misnomer. The lusty doves can breed any month of the year and the birds may raise six or more broods per year. In my youth, in North Jersey, we did not have wintering Mourning Doves. Northern birds retreat from locations where snow covers the ground, blocking their access to the seeds that constitute 99% of the bird’s diet. The proliferation of backyard feeding stations has resulted in more birds wintering farther north and more birds surviving the winter. I suspect it has also boosted breeding success. Healthy, well-nourished birds can turn their minds to other pursuits. And with young in the nest a ready supply of seed comes in handy. Pigeons feed their young a porridge-like regurgita-
m a s s a g e b o d y s c r u b s & w r a p s
tion called pigeon milk. It obviously works because the North American population of Mourning Doves is 120 million. As North America’s most popular gamebird, the 20 million doves harvested per year does not even cut into the birth rate. Do the math: Two eggs per nest, times six nesting attempts per year, times 90 pairs. That comes to a lot of squab If you want to attract doves to your yard, millet is their seed of choice. You’ll have to toss it on the ground. Dove feet are cumber-
some, ill suited for small perches. And doves also like a fresh water source since their diet requires that the birds drink often. So tied to water sources are the birds that westward-bound pioneers watched for the birds to lead them to water. While there are other dove species in North America, we in Cape May have only this one. So far! A larger paler species, the Collared Dove, is spreading like dove feathers in the wind. First established in the West Indies, this Old World native was first recorded in Florida in the mid 1970s. By the end of the century, it had marched clear across the continent. It has been recorded in every state and is now established across much of the US and southern Canada. Only the Northeast awaits colonization. But if you see a large pallid dove with a narrow black collar, you are not the first and you won’t be the last. Collared Doves have a nasal bray call that is much at odds with Mourning Dove’s plaintive coo. Seated side by side on a utility line Collared Dove will dwarf Mourning Dove.

MOMMA is an energetic, happy 4 year old brown and white beauty. Her owner could no longer take care of her, so Momma sits in her kennel, eagerly watching people go by and hoping she will have a home again. A family that wants an active companion but beyond the puppy stage would be a match. Her sweet disposition will win over your heart!
ROCCO is 4-5 years of age. He came to the shelter through no fault of his own and deserves a loving new home. He lived with adults, and was well behaved with young grandchildren. He is friendly with people and appears to be dog friendly too! Rocco is very affectionate and eager to please. He will be a great family pet. Adopt today!
HARPER came to the shelter as a stray. She is very energetic and friendly, although she has not mastered her manners, she seems to be friendly towards other dogs. She will do well with a family that is very active and has the time to help her with training. Harper is crate trained and enjoys both running in the yard and taking walks. Adopt today!
