Having A Masquerade Ball!

10:30pm At Ugly Mug’s Halloween Party P17-20

Festival Of Frights At Holly Shores Campground P32-42

It wouldn’t be Halloween on the Cape without Congress Hall’s annual Phantom Ball. This year’s masqueradethemed party, held last Friday night, featured tasty boos (er, booze), decadent desserts and spooky-good dancing from skeletons, members of the Adams family, a particularly realistic-looking seahorse and a host of other ghoulish characters you’ll find pictured in these pages. Top photo: Jim, April, Brianna, Mike, Meagan Left photo: Liz, Madonna and crew More photographs inside and in next week’s issue. Aleksey Moryakov

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

The Giant Spider Crab, found about 1,000 feet below the surface of the ocean, is the largest crab in the world -- it can grow up to 12 feet, claw to claw. With a bumpy shell that helps these guys blend into the ocean floor and avoid predators, these guys live up to 100 years. Ugly as they may be, they’re considered a prize delicacy in some parts of Japan.

The Exit Zero International Jazz Festival -- launched in 2012 by Michael Kline, agent to the (music) stars -- takes over town twice a year, in April and November, when acclaimed jazz, soul, blues and R&B performers rock venues throughout the city. Among the artists who’ve played the Cape? Nine-time Grammy award winner Wynton Marsalis, piano prodigy Joey Alexander, and legendary soul man William Bell. Here’s what the EZ team had for lunch this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: The family-owned Cape May Winery and Vineyard, in North Cape May on Townbank Road. The scoop: They encompass 70+ acres and tend the oldest vines in Cape May County, with eleven varietals and over 20 styles of wine, white to red, dry to sweet. It’s owned by the Craig family, who also operate Lucky Bones, The Washington Inn and Love the Cook. The accolades: There have been many. Most recently a Best in Class in the Garden State Wine Growers’ annual competition. The hawks: They were flying overhead as we approached the rustic front entrance, which was decked out in festive fall decor. Like something out of a postcard? Yes, yes it was. The seats: There are several options at Cape May Winery, including cozy tasting rooms, an outdoor patio, and a breezy, second-floor deck. We chose the quiet glassed-in sunroom complete with fireplace, overlooking the grape vines. The tapas: That’s right, Cape May Winery serves food prepared by uber-talented chef Mike Siegel. We opted for a charcuterie board complete with a mix of gourmet cheeses (sheep, cow and goat, thankyouverymuch), plus serrano ham, cured pork sausage and cured pork loin. On the side, we enjoyed apples, pepitas, sliced bread, spicy mustard, caper berries, cornichons and house-made lavender honey. Chef’s kiss. We also ordered the crispy Nashville chicken sliders with citrus-herb mayo and jalapeno coleslaw, plus the butter-poached lobster sliders. Don’t judge us! The wines: We went for the Barrel-Fermented Chardonnay, or BFC as it’s called at Cape May Winery. This is their flagship wine, and it’s oaky, balanced and the perfect complement to that housemade honey. The trivia: As of 2018, Cape May County is an American Viticultural Area (AVA, aka good at wine growing), and we’ve been designated a US wine-growing region. Or, as The New York Times put it, Cape May County’s “loamy soil and relatively moderate climate” make us a “small but obscure treasure.” Salut!

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

o not adjust the vertical, do not adjust the horizontal. We are in control. What you are about to read is a terrifying, mind-numbing collection of half-formed thoughts and insipid Dad Jokes from an unhinged, lunatic mind. Should you or anyone you love accidentally ingest these words, please rinse their eyes with bleach and feed them some Thai Shrimp and Coconut soup from Exit Zero Filling Station, the world’s greatest known cure-all for what ails you. Now, sit beack relax, and enjoy, for you have entered... The Undertow Zone, where no man has gone before. (I know I mixed a few classic sci-fi TV tropes there, but I’m on deadline, dammit...) With Exit Zero honcho Jack Wright away for two weeks to Points Unknown (Portugal? Scotland? Villas?) he has made the fatal mistake of leaving me in charge of editorial content this week, which means you can look forward to a lot of fart jokes inserted into the otherwise fart joke-less Bird Droppings, Answer Lady, Old Fogey, etc.

(Okay, that’s not true. Although the temptation to drop fart jokes all over the magazine this week was pretty strong, Jack’s last words to me were, “And don’t Terry everything up!” So... no fart jokes, no Squeeze references, although there will probably be plenty of typos.) I hope you’re all enjoying your Halloween... I would say day, but it really seems to have turned into its own mini-season in recent years, with decorations coming out in stores a little after Easter, and Social Media Nerds lecturing us all how Very Important it

is. Me? I’m old enough to remember when it was a fun day at school comparing costumes with your friends and getting an ass load of free candy. We call this era The 1970s. I come to you this week in a mild panic at getting the issue finished before deadline, and an hour or so before Tim Joyce and I play the West Cape May Christmas Parade fundraiser at Exit Zero Filling Station. If you were here, I’m sure you had a good time. If you weren’t, I’m sure you missed a good time. Tim and I play EZFS every Friday and Saturday, 5-9. Tuesdays I play with my Wildwood Homie, Bill Caterini. And at every gig I tell our guests, “If you’ll turn to page 25 and come up with a pen, I’d be glad to autograph my column.” This is invariably followed by someone asking me, “Terry, how do you sing so well and write so good?” I will, in my humble way, answer, “It’s not easy, but I manage. It must be all this God given talent!” The guest, satisfied, simply nods, a tear in their eye and turns away. Then everybody claps. My Halloween Saturday was pretty insane in that way only I can schedule myself

for an insane Halloween Saturday, with a gig at EZFS, an early dip-out, and a Terry O’Brien Band gig at Carney’s. That’s when things got... active. First off, I decided to try on my nifty Star Trek uniform shirt that afternoon instead of any of the 30 afternoons it sat in the Amazon Prime bag in my room, and found that the XXL shirt fit more like a freakin’ Chinese Medium. Seriously, you could see my pulse through this thing. So what is a fat guy in a tight shirt to do? Get 20 or 30 of his closest friends and bandmates to tell him, “No, you look fine!” That’s what. TOB Band guitarist, Dr. David Bee, however, chose not to participate, calling me “fat ass” a dozen times or so. Tough talk coming from a guy dressed as a banana. And how does a guy named Bee not go AS A BEE??!!? Anyway, it’s that kind of tough love from a trusted friend that keeps me grounded. The jerk. Carney’s started a little on the slow side, but by our Billy Joel set the place was hopping. I spent most of it playing goalie on the, uh, excited dancers and backing up as far as I could (drummer Al Olivero must have the image of my butt lasered onto his retinas, the lucky devil) in an effort to avoid any undue conflict or touching of the unwashed heathens, but all it took was the 3 seconds I turned around to call out the next song for a reveler to send my iPad stand flying and, more egregiously, spilling my pint. It was handed back to me soaked in Miller Lite and sporting a web of cracks along its face. It was at this point, the intro to “My Life”, that I told the band to vamp for a minute while I went to the rest room to splash some cold water on my face and gain control of my blood pressure. And, while I did manage to calm myself and complete the evening with a semi-functioning iPad, it would be a lie if I said I didn’t perform the entirety of “You May Be Right” with my left middle finger extended to a certain audience member. As Billy Joel famously reassured me in 1984,

October 31, 2019 I’m only human. The rest of the night was a blast. My friends Edward Kohl and Maddie Hogan took home some cash for their Zipper Face and Sweeney Todd costumes, the Bruce Springsteen and Prince sets rocked some faces, and nobody else called me fat. I must also mention that Carney’s manager, Sean Carney called me on Sunday to thank us for a great night and offer to pay for the repair to my iPad. This is, what we call in the business, a Stand-Up Move, and it’s greatly appreciated. First estimate is the repair will cost $30,000. Earlier, at EZFS, it was great to see Sandy and Joanne McCullough for the 2nd week in a row. Are they becoming, dare I say, regulars? Sandy and I spent a lot of years tossing jokes back and forth when he was the mayor of the southeast corner of the bar at Rusty Nail in the 90s. I’d like to ressurect that tradition, if Sandy is still smart enough to keep up. (See what I did there?) It’s also becoming apparent that Ginny and Hugh Murray are challenging John Cooke for the title of Most Omnipresent Cape May Gadabout. What we need now is an app where you can collect them all. Capemon Go? Is Ray Crew reading my column and programming his 101.5 WCFA-LP show just for me? If so, I approve. I haven’t heard Billy Joel’s “A Room of Our Own” since I bought Turnstiles in 1986. I’m sure this 16th reboot of The Terminator will clear everything up. Lastly this week, by the time you read this I will have had my shoulder looked at and either be in a sling, minus one arm, or feeling stupid it was a pulled muscle all along. Hoping for the pulled muscle thing, but losing an arm might get me some Sympathy Points at home. Either way, if I don’t wave, don’t be insulted; my arm hurts (or I don’t know who you are because I’m too important to remember you). Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

do miss The Age of Steam. I know, I know: I was the loudest objector when The Age of Sail ended, and I may have declared the first steamship to be the work of the devil, and set about it with my walking cane when first it docked in Cape May. But in no time at all I was sailing all over the world on the finest brass-and-chrome ships, with my leather portmanteau and my faithful manservant. Of course, in those days, one was allowed to dock where one pleased, and to rush ashore and liberate whatever works of antiquity one considered to be of value, to be steamed back to a museum in America or London, and native protests be damned! Why, that is how Cape May’s Museum of Lost Wonders (location: secret) came to possess The Other Elgin Marbles, the Sphinx’s nose, and The Dread Jade God of Wildwood. Things have changed, though, and not for the better. I was talking to the Scotch brute editor in chief of this very rag, about his plans for a “wee hoaladay” to Scotchland, and was taken aback by his plans to fly, in what

he called “coach.” He described the scenes on such a flight: seats so flimsy one can see the outline of the underwear of the person ahead through the seat back, and so close together than one’s arms are pressed into the clammy flesh of the poor people on either side. “Naw, there’s no porcelain cups for tea!” he explained, “but ye get wee bags of pretzels!” Really, I considered striking him down on the spot, on the grounds that he was better dead than so debased, but then I realized that with him out of the way (temporarily, as opposed

to slain by my hand) I would be able to write about whatever I pleased, in this, my most impressive column. And be able to include all kinds of clever double entendre without an anxious call starting with “ah dinnae ken…it’s a bit much…” In the end, I chose pragmatic mercy, and a solution that got him out of my hair for s spell, but spared him the need to travel like a condemned man en route to the colonies. Thusly, I rapped him sharply on the temple with my calloused hand, rendering him unconscious, and hoisted him (with some difficulty) into my most splendid brass-bound travel case, the one lined in plush velvet. We then had the case ported to the docks, to be loaded into the hold of The Pogue Mahone, a Celtic vessel bound (eventually) for the fair port of Paisley, from whence he came. Of course, the two weeks’ travel time will be a challenge, but we included a packet of crackers and a flask of single malt, plus a candle and the compelling book D’Catur’s Travels Abroad, so he will emerge slimmer, and better educated.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, run for your life!

Z

ombie season is upon us, and you may be sitting on your couch, feeling a little smug. You’re confident that you can outrun the zombies on Night of the Living Dead, or The Walking Dead, so maybe you can postpone your return to running. Maybe you can safely snuggle back under a blanket for another marathon of movie watching. Don’t be so sure. Zombies are getting faster, according to scientists from Carnegie Mellon. They used the fictional concept of zombies to study real diseases. Though the concept of undead humans overstaying their earthly welcome is ancient, most movie zombies draw from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. On the islands of the Caribbean, people told tales of voodoo practitioners reviving and enslaving the dead. With a blend of African legends and Catholic teachings, storytellers created these monstrous metaphors, but zombies have also been created through viruses, radiation, and chemical warfare. Carnegie Mellon researchers determined that zombies suffer

from “Conscious Deficit Hypoactivity Disorder,” or “CDHD,” an acquired syndrome which robs victims of free thought. Classic zombies have CDHD type 1, characterized by “lethargic movement.” A classic zombie can’t catch a human on the run. Modern zombies have CDHD Type 2, so they retain their pep. Check out the Resident Evil series or Zombieland 2: Double Tap, for zombies who display terrifyingly acrobatic abilities. You’re not going to outrun these zombies unless you get fit, and the cheapest way to get fit? Rrunning! Luckily, running is as much fun as zombie movies. Adults tend to forget that part.

Watch kids being let out of a preschool. The first thing they do is start running around. The next thing they do is start laughing. Don’t believe me? Run, or, if you’re out of shape, move as fast as you can for a few minutes. See if you don’t start giggling, and nothing makes you feel less like a zombie than a good giggle. It only takes about twenty minutes a few days a week to keep a human from zombie-like feelings. Though zombies gather in mobs, they don’t really socialize. Running, on the other hand, is an unexpectedly social hobby, whether you are fleeing a horde or joining a running group before a local race. And, if you run outside in daylight, you don’t have to worry about becoming a vampire, either. Sunshine helps to regulate your body clock to keep your energy up. Cape May’s flat streets let you set your own pace, or move to the sand for a harder slog. Wear bright colors to avoid the dangers of invisibility. Casale’s Shoes of the Cape May Running Company can help you find the sneakers you need to get started.

The Movie Column

Arts columnist Tom Sims reviews “The Gospel According to Andre”

F

ashion is fleeting, style remains,” says legendary style commentator André Leon Talley in the 2017 documentary The Gospel According to André. The film has screened internationally and picked up two prestigious nominations. The movie will premiere with your friends at the Cape May Film Society on Saturday, November 9, 6pm at West Cape May Borough Hall. Visit www.newnjstatefilmfestival.com for details. “Nobody really needs another handbag or another sweater or another coat,” says Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief at Vogue. “It has to be emotional. And André could always make the reader feel that dream, feel that emotion.” This film is compares very favorably to one of my favorite fashion documentaries, Iris (2014). That film follows an eccentric, larger than life fashion icon—and so does this film. The footage in this film spans decades. There is outstanding integration of footage from the segregated South, where Talley was born and raised, and his own videos of chic micro fashion shows. You’ll easily tell that

filmmaker Kate Novack carefully spent time to assemble this rich tapestry. The textures of this film are as real as the clothing Talley reviews. Watching the master at work charming a designer is sight to behold. “André is one of the last great editors who knows what they’re looking at, knows what they’re seeing, where it came from,” says Tom Ford, one of many designers featured. “And André tosses out all these different words, and he’s so big and his gestures are so grand... I think a lot of people

think this guy is crazy.” Talley has been a fixture in the world of fashion for so long that it’s difficult to imagine a time when he wasn’t defining the boundaries of great style. This film takes viewers on an emotional journey from André’s roots in the Jim Crow South to one of the most influential tastemakers and fashion curators of our times. This film draws fascinating, unexplored connections, between the elegance of André’s beloved grandmother and the Black Church of his youth and his later iconic, barrier-breaking work at publications like Women’s Wear Daily, W and Vogue. Weaving together a wealth of archival footage from the most glamorous moments in fashion history with André’s poignant reflections on his life and career, The Gospel According to André is a cinematic monument to one of the most unique figures of 20th Century American culture. If you are a lover of film and a fashion junkie, Cape May Film Society highly recommends you make this screening.

ARIES: You will buy 46.5 mums from Duckie’s Farm Market. When people ask why, you’ll respond: “Mum’s the word.” TAURUS: You will adopt a dog from the Cape May County Animal Shelter. You will name him William Shakespaw. GEMINI: You will surf a particularly dangerous wave at the Cove, and your life will flash before your eyes. It will consist mostly of waffles from the Mad Batter. CANCER: You will go for a stroll through the historic district. You will walk through a particularly crunchy pile of leaves, which will disturb the horse from a nearby carriage, who will run wild onto the beach, which will scare a flock of tree swallows, who will poop on Quentin Tarantino, which will give him the idea for his next film. LEO: You will give in and become a birdwatcher. You will become so engrossed in trying to spot a raptor through your binoculars, you will not notice when one lands on your head and takes up residence there for the rest of the day. VIRGO: You will win $1000 in a hot pepper-eating contest. You will spend it all on milk. LIBRA: You will go for a run on the trails at Cape May Point State Park and encounter a white-tailed deer who leads you to a secret pond where a bunch of gnomes are eating takeout from Exit Zero Filling Station. SCORPIO: You will hold a conch shell to your ear. Instead of hearing the ocean, you will hear Russell Crowe yell “Are you not entertained?” SAGITTARIUS: You will write an epic fantasy series about a place called Middle-earth where an unlikely hero must destroy an evil ring. All the characters will be cats, and you will call it “Lord of the Strings.” CAPRICORN: You will visit the Wetlands Institute. You will be so overcome by their work saving the diamondback terrapin, you will make a donation to help fund their research and conservation program. AQUARIUS: You will spend the weekend learning Mandarin and discussing social phenomenology theory. Just kidding -- you will watch reruns of “BoJack Horseman” while eating leftover pizza from Lucky Bones in your underwear. PISCES: You will capture a spectacular Cape May sunset on your iPhone. You will earn mad cred on the gram.

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My wife and I have separated and I moved out of the house into another one that I share with two other guys in the same boat. The problem is one the guys has no sense of boundaries or consideration for his roommates. My first week there I bought groceries - some were for the house but other stuff – my favorite lunchmeats, a rotisserie chicken, orange juice – were for me. He goes on a bender at night; comes home and the next morning the only leftovers are bones, empty wrappers and an empty container. None of which were even thrown into the trash, but left on the counter waiting for someone else to clean them up. I see why he’s single and I see why my wife was always at me for the same issues but in the meantime, what I do about him? This also costly. – Fed Up

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Dear Fed We take it he was completely unapologetic. Well, If he’s anything like some of the men the Answer Lady has had close encounters with, he’ll never look in the vegetable bin. Put your goodies in there until you can go out and buy a small fridge which you can put in your bedroom? What does the other roommate have to say about all this? We suspect he eats out a lot. Speaking of which, you sound like you need a Lucky Bones pizza and an artisan beer. Get thee down there ASAP and forget about Mr.

Hog. Dear Answer Lady My best friend is the nicest person in the whole world. Would and has done anything for anybody but she’s utterly embarrassing when we eat out. She is SO rude to the servers, I can feel my face turn red when she talks to them in that dismissive, demeaning tone of hers. I’ve told her about it before, but she waves me away and denies it. It’s as though she can’t help herself. I don’t want this to affect our friendship, but I’m afraid it already has. I find every excuse in the world to not go out to lunch with her, which is a problem, because for years we have met once a month for lunch or dinner. What to do? – Embarrassed Dear Embarrassed The Answer Lady knows one thing you can do – record her and play it back for her. There’s no excuse for such behavior. You need to seriously talk to her about it. Take her to Beach Plum Farm’s market. Get something to go and make use of the picnic benches. Yes, you are taking a risk that she will end the friendship, but isn’t it already on the decline?

Bird Droppings

T

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

he Columbus Day Meadows walk is typically well attended. Especially when winds are blowing northwest. This one was classic. 46 participants in the South Cape May parking lot tempered somewhat by the absence of migrating raptors. Regardless, we set out on the trails with assurances that everyone had binoculars and knew how to use them. Sparrows were the first order of business. Swamp (dark), Savannah (trim), and Song (disheveled). Sparrows are a challenging group but at least they stay put. The Center path produced no surprises, a surprise in itself. Last week a Yellow-billed Cuckoo was sleeping on an exposed branch. Scope views of a perched Cooper’s Hawk more than compensated for the cuckoos absence and provided an opportunity to discuss raptor hunting techniques. Coops are bushwhacker. We arrived at rail corner in good time and lingered because one participant thought they saw a snipe in the reeds. Thus we were still in position when a Sora stepped into plain view and binocular enhancement

disclosed a Virginia Rail skulking behind, probably the first time in birding history that these two marsh birds have stood in the same field of view for fifty birders. The Sora was particularly obliging, standing in plain sight before a sea of admirers, many of whom had never seen Sora Rail before, as the held breath and whispered “Wows”could attest before the bird darted behind a curtain of cattail. We moved on to the dune to discover the trail under a foot of seawater, so we retreated land-side. By this

time the cries of indignant Greater Yellowlegs filled the air. We searched in vain for the reported American Golden Plover until a passerby allowed that the tundra breeder had jumped to the inner pool side. Plovers also play fair, standing in the open and walking with a halting robin-like strut. Even among a host of killdeer, the bird stood out, Killdeer are also plovers who find drought stricken ponds ideal habitat. On the east side, a Common Gallinule cavorted among the assembled Green-winged Teal. Pintails, mallards and American Black Ducks rounded out the roster and I’m willing to bet the Black Ducks were “Life Birds,” for west coast birders. We left with the plover still showing nicely and returned to the parking lot in time for visitors to pole leaders about best next places to go. In October, in Cape May, with northwest winds, this means the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point. All in all a splendid morning, a three rail walk insofar as the gallinule is also a rail. Even the Russian judge would have given the outing a score of ten.

Itty doesn’t like being picked up too much, but loves to be pet. If you have room in your home for an old gal like Itty Bitty, come meet her at the shelter!

CRUELLA got her name, not because she is cruel, but because of her black and white markings and different color eyes. Being cooped up with all these other cats are making Cruella a bit stir crazy! Come meet this cutie at the shelter and give her all the space she needs to roam and conquer her home. She’s eagerly awaiting your arrival!

LEELOO has been at the shelter for over a year now. Her family couldn’t take care of her anymore, so Leeloo got brought here. We know what you’re thinking—“That is one big cat!” And you’re right, She’s big, bold and beautiful. Although she is on the older side and a little set in her ways, Leeloo loves to be brushed and pet. Adopt today!
