Annual Wine And Spirits Fest The third annual Wine and Spirits Fest held at Convention Hall last Saturday left attendees in, excuse us, good spirits. The event, which allowed for the tasting of wines and distilled liquors from top makers, featured live music from Erik Simonsen, food from Red Brick Ale House and more than $2,000 in raffle prizes. The event was sponsored by Law Enforcement United, which raises awareness for law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Proceeds will benefit the organization’s Road to Hope bicycle ride which honors the fallen and encompasses 250-mile routes in VA, PA and NJ.

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

The Pelican Eel, aka a Gulper, is not really an eel at all — it’s a scaleless fish named for a giant mouth that extends like that of a pelican to hold on to prey. As far as fish go, this guy’s a pretty poor swimmer. Instead, he relies on a pink or red bioluminescent (a glow-in-thedark) tail that draws in other fish the pelican eel can then eat for dinner. The gulper can be more than three feet long, with a body that’s half tail.

In the 1960s, when mayor Frank Gauvry (center) advocated for an outdoor, mall in Cape May, the concept was still a northern European idea that hadn’t made its way across the Atlantic. Revitalization efforts in America were still focused on car-friendly construction like highways and parking garages. Only five major cities in the US offered anything similar. But, despite a great deal of hostility, when the mall was completed in 1971 it became an instant success. Merchants were able to stay open after Labor Day, and city leaders flocked to Cape May to experience the concept.

American Fire Monica Hesse This is the nonfiction story of Accomack County in rural Virginia, the target of a months-long arson campaign. It’s a true-crime love story in which the characters and motives are as weird as they are compelling. A strange trip through the heartlands.

Where We’re Eating

Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: The Ebbitt Room on beautiful, tree-lined Jackson Street. We snuck in just before they closed for a lobby renovation. Geez, everyone is renovating these days. Renovating is the new black. The seats: We grabbed the last three at a packed bar. The bartender: Leo Moryakov. Fun fact: He’s the younger brother of legendary Exit Zero photog Aleksey Moryakov. Another fun fact: Aleksey was cleaning bathrooms and Leo was a towel boy when EZ honcho Jack Wright was (mis)managing the Congress Hall pool bar in the summer of 2002. Oh how they’ve grown. The drinks: The signature Pear Martini for Diane, and approximately 14 glasses of water. She’s training for a race and chronically dehydrated. And (surprise, surprise) Manhattan and Old Fashioned for Jack and Katie. The eavesdropping: At one point, Jack tried to speak with Diane, but she shushed him. She was fully engrossed in the argument happening near her. Let’s just say some of you have some… unusual, let’s say, political ideas that cause a girl to do a spit take with her martini. The food: Chargrilled oysters, pappardelle puttanesca, short ribs, burger with truffle fries, a lobster roll and a side of brussel sprouts. Yep, just the three of us… why do you ask? The assignation: Katie left early for a secret meetup at the VFW. Before she took off, she proudly revealed her “discovery” that you can now park in the 15-minute spot on Jackson without being ticketed. Uh-oh, secret’s out. The run-in: Local businessman John DeMayo came in with his wife Dawn. They discussed with the bar the prospect of Mike Trout, best player in baseball, signing with the Phillies next year when he’s a free agent. This would be a… home run. (Zing!) The takeaway: Eating at the ER is good. Listening in on other people’s conversations is not.

Ramblings From The Editor

T

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

here we were, just before 6pm on a Saturday night on a deserted Washington Street Mall, skulking in doorways, sheltering from the rain and trying not to look conspicuous. It was important that we delay our attack until after 6pm. To go for it any earlier would have seemed desperate and unseemly. And then, suddenly, we were not alone. People came from every direction, heading for the same place — the door of Casale’s Shoe Store. Were you there? If not, you missed a grand old time. Me and the wife walked away with seven (count ’em!) boxes of shoes for about the same price as dinner for two at one of disgraced chef Mario Batali’s restaurants in Manhattan. (Weird reference, I know, but he WAS famous for his orange Crocs, so there IS a link.) Every year, Casale’s puts on a crazy sale. How crazy? Half of the current sale price crazy. It only lasted for two three-hour slots on Friday and Saturday. And to my lovely

drinking in Cape May, given the exciting change that is (the gods be willing) about to happen at Exit Zero Filling Station. I’ve been teasing y’all for many weeks because I couldn’t jump the gun, but this week we were planning on having our liquor license being awarded by the Borough of West Cape May. I’ll have more news on this in next week’s issue, when hopefully all is signed and sealed. Speaking of exciting new things in town, Mickey and Kate Chew have bought the All-Irish Imports store bang in the center of town and plan to open an ice cream and coffee shop this summer. And so continues the march of the young entrepreneurs. I love it! A belated congratulations to the Washington Inn and Peter Shields Inn for being named in the list of 100 Most Romantic Restaurants in America by the OpenTable reservations company. There were restaurants from 32 states included, so this is a pretty serious shout-out.

³ colleague Marjorie McGhee, who hollered out, “I need a new husband!” after she saw us load up... it wasn’t my treat. The wife flashed the credit card for this one. It was the perfect ending to a fine night in Cape May. Before that, we ate the best seafood pot pie I’ve ever had at Oyster Bay (the lobster pot pie at Exit Zero Filling Station is pretty good, but this was world-class) and bumped into the Harpoons brothers, Brady Schoenrock and Jeff Raiczyk. It’s important that I research eating and

Bartender Of The Week This week, Miranda Roemhild from The Lobster House is up. How long have you been bartending? Two years. Favorite drink to serve? A cosmo or old fashioned. I make them so well that when I turn around, they’re gone in the blink of an eye! What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers snap to get my attention. Dream job? Either a teacher or a business owner.

Chef’s Signature Dish Place: Peter Shields Inn Chef: Carl Messick Signature dish: I would have to say my crab salad is a dish that follows me everywhere. I created this dish as an addition for one of my old chefs many years ago. It’s jumbo lump crab, smoked salmon, mache, toasted almonds and basil aioli. It was the first thing I created that was put on a menu and meant a lot to me as a young chef.

It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places — from $3 off fudge to $15 off dinner. It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into the lovely Karen Manette Bosna, the gypsy yogini, from West Cape May who was headed to teach a class. We asked her to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. She picked out a $10 discount for Quincy’s Lobster Rolls. Who would she like to share this discount with? Husband Dan.

I

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

t’s a rainy Sunday as I write to you this week from the Gastender (copyright pending) Booth here at Exit Zero Filling Station. But hopefully it’s sunny and warm as you consume this amusebouche (that’s French) of journalistic-ish perfection. Being the new gas pumper guy has allowed me to meet a great many interesting people. I also met... Chris Hughes, a carpenter who commutes to Philly from Cape May Point almost every day. He always brings his truck which, after his drive, is a Jackson Pollock of salt and dust. Chris set a dangerous precedent by tipping me $5 the first time I washed his windows, leaving me bitterly disappointed any time he tips less. (I actually negotiated my way down to a more reasonable $2-$3 per wash because I’m good with money.) Leslie Donaldson, assistant to Cape Resorts capo de tutti Curtis Bashaw (pfft, big deal, I have three assistants, and they have to do everything I tell them, like put their laundry away and feed the cat) pulled in to gas up one of their fleet of company vehicles.

As I cleaned her windshield she said, ”I feel like I won a ticket to the car wash!” I said, “Come back in three months, I’ll be doing this in a Speedo.” After an awkward silence I said, “You’re picturing me in a Speedo right now, aren’t you.” She laughed and said, “Royal Blue.” I apologize to her and to anyone who now has a picture of me in a Royal Blue Speedo stuck in their head. (And it would be red, in case you’re wondering.) Jack McDonough and I had a nice chat about weatherpersons and how, like baseball players, they can fail 75% of the time and still

make millions while destroying attendance to your Beatles show at Carney’s in January. Turns out Jack has a couple of grandkids in the Bastard Sons of Captain Mey — Dylan O’Donnell and Max Crowley. Actually, only one of them is his biological grandson, the other is only like a grandson, though I forget which is which. Bastard Sons has got the goods. Catch them before they outgrow our little pond. I also met Dan. He’s fresh out of Quantico. That’s all I can tell you. When I’m not writing my column or working on my novel or pumping gas or helping out with the EZ construction project or singing Beatles songs, I deliver Exit Zero every Thursday morning (unless there’s a blizzard in PA, in which case it’s a Friday morning) where it seems people have accepted that I’m not local Tarzan Mike DeMusz. (Don’t worry ladies, and a few gents; he’ll be back soon.) In doing so, I’ve learned just how much graft and corruption has gripped our idyllic little community. For example... Kate from Kate’s Flower Shop on Park

104 JACKSON STREET

Boulevard plied me with with a free rose for my wife on Valentine’s Day. And what did she want in return? Nothing. She was just being nice. I’m not sure she understand how this quid pro quo thing works. (Thanks, Kate! Glad you survived Valentine’s Day, which must be like Christmas for flower shops. Or like Valentine’s Day for flower shops. I’m bad at analogies.) At Kate’s I ran into local raconteur Carl Behrens, whom I had JUST SEEN at the North Cape May Wawa an hour earlier. It’s possible he just happened to be getting coffee and flowers the same time I was, but it still felt pretty shady. I’m keeping an eye on you, Carl. Right next door at Chez Michel, world class pastry chef Michel Gras, who is French and therefore inherently 30% squirrely, offered me a fresh baked pastry. ON THE HOUSE. See, that’s how they get you. First one’s free then you’re hooked. He asked me what I’d like, I told him, “Dealer’s choice”, and he forked over a danish with cheese in the center topped by a little peach “yolk.” It is quite possibly the greatest pastry I have ever eaten. The bastard. And then, AND THEN, I stopped next door at Ostara’s, a nifty little coffee shop you should visit, and ordered a decaf. (Don’t make fun.) Not only did Vicky, the owner, brew me a fresh one from some cappuccino pods, she had the audacity to only charge me $2 for it. $2! And it had just the mildest sweetness to it that I couldn’t quite place but was absolutely delicious! How dare she. (A sincere thank you to everyone above, except Carl, and to everyone who makes my delivery day brighter with a kind deed or word.) Speaking of free stuff, I was recently tasked with tasting several Cape May Brewing Company IPAs that may or may not be available at a restaurant in West Cape May in the very near future. “A tasting!” I may or may not have declared. “I say thee

February 28, 2019 nay! A task such as this requires a drinking!” So, here we are. First up was a Devil’s Reach Belgian Style Ale, which paired well with a couple episodes of Young Doctor’s Notebook on Netflix, in which Harry Potter-ite Daniel Radcliffe plays a younger version of John Hamm in 1917 Russia. Good show, good beer, good start. Next was their Cape May Lager, which is a little less hoppy, and went well with compiling a set list for an upcoming band project. Im such a tease, aren’t I? Not a tease; this beer. It takes you all the way there. Then came their by-now classic IPA which, if you’re into IPAs, is as good as it gets, which is, coincidentally, the movie I watched while drinking it. Like Jack Nicholson’s famously caustic character, this beer made me want to be a better man. I then blacked out for a bit. When I came to I fired down an Always Ready Northeast Pale Ale. This one is a bit on the tart side, like a wife venting about her day at work after she’s vented about her day at work while you were at work. Not my wife, of course. Just a wife in general. Finally, I powered down a Coastal Evacuation Double IPA. I’ve long believed nothing could improve a Taco Bell Crunchwrap. This beer proved me gloriously wrong. Thank you, Cape May Brewing Company, for allowing me to sample your fine product and develop a crippling addiction to hops! That’s all for now. Remember to come see Love Me Dudes at Carney’s on March 15 for their Polar Bear Plunge fundraiser. This gig will feature the return of Mike O’Brien on lead guitar and lead complaining about Parkway tolls. Next Thursday is my birthday! Please deliver all gifts and cash to: Gastender Booth, 110 Sunset Boulevard, West Cape May, 08204. (Oh, and I’m still smoking, like an idiot. Bye!) ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Inside City Hall

Highlights from the February 19 meeting of Cape May City Council... by Susan Tischler QUOTE OF THE NIGHT “I’m 84 years old. I no longer can reach behind my back and undo my bra. So, I’ve had to make an adjustment. I now have a bra that fastens in front.” — Lenore McGann speaking to city council and warning about making adjustments that might adversely affect Cape May’s historical status. She hopes “that we keep Cape May an old city.” In other words, she’s still wearing a bra — she didn’t abandon it. She’s hoping condos will not replace the Allen African Methodist Church, which met its doom following a June, 2018 fire. Its fate is still up in the air. THE LOWDOWN City Manager and CFO Neil Young presented his recommended budget in a special meeting which preceded the regular meeting which preceded a closed session meeting. Phew. The recommended budget calls for a nine-tenth of a cent increase. Current Fund $19,806,246; Beach Utility $2,606834; Tourism Utility $1,330,000; Water-Sewer Utility $7,118,000. If approved, this would give the city another $257,400. What does

this mean to you? Your property taxes would increase by about $9 per every $100,000. IS THIS FINAL? No, it’s just the beginning of the process. Council can add or delete as they see fit. The formal budget will be presented at the March 5 meeting. A public hearing and the final vote will be held April 2. Fire Chief Alex Coulter addressed council on that subject when he noted there was no money set aside for three additional firemen. “My plea to you in the coming years,” he said, “is I need more people. If you can’t scrub my back in ’19, please scrub it in ’20.” ONE WAY? NO WAY! Business owners

and residents on Broad and Bank streets turned out in force to protest passage of a proposed ordinance which, if approved, would have made Bank Street one way, heading north from Lafayette and east from Venice to Elmira. WHO DOES IT AFFECT? Restaurants 410 Bank Street and Mythos, Long & Foster Real Estate, Homestead Realty, Bank Street Commons, Swain’s Hardware, Patricia Jackson Jeweler, Free Love Bridal, Ladies Room Consignment Boutique, Miss Demeanor and Guardian. Plus, residential homes. 410 Bank owner Steve Miller referred to the section as “Our Town,” as in the 1938 Thornton Wilder play which depicts a town which is deceptively quiet at first glance but actually has a lot going on. WHO WANTS THIS? Engineers and the Planning Board maintain that two Master Plans have suggested this change is necessary for safety purposes. Bonus: It would free up 20 parking spaces that would be paid by smartphone app only. Translation? No parking meters. Ergo: All profit.

No maintenance. WHO DOESN’T WANT THIS? Those against — virtually everyone in the room — claim the proposal has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with creating 20 parking spaces. Or as Pat Jackson of Patricia Jackson Jewelers put it, “Another band-aid solution in Cape May.” Other ‘No Way One Way’ advocates pointed out the flooding issue. They asked why the city would encourage parking on a street that floodsso regularly, which can severely damage vehicles with salt water intake. Bank Street resident Christine Miller led the charge for addressing the flooding issue and to respect the harmonious character of the commercial/residential district. It was a Who’s Who of Cape May when it came to those who stepped up to the plate and voiced their concerns before council. Along with Steve Miller and Pat Jackson, Greg Coffey of Bank Street Commons, Gail Wilsey of Long and Foster, Terri Swain and Glenn McBrearty of Swain’s Ace Hardware spoke. Planning Commission chairman Bill Bezaire was the lonely guy in the room. He advocated for the ordinance and asked that the “baby not be thrown out with the water.” Translation? Don’t summarily vote it down. SO WHAT HAPPENED? Council tabled the matter to study it further. NO SCHOOL LIKE OLD SCHOOL Freshman councilmember Zack Mullock felt the heat. A resolution, which he sponsored, regarding the process for appointing members of the advisory committees of Cape May was defeated 3-2. Think volunteers as in those appointed to the beach safety, bicycle and 10 other committees involving over 85 volunteers. Traditionally, volunteers are either solicited by council members — the mayor is especially influential — or approach council to serve. Mullock’s resolution called for posting such openings on the city’s web-

February 28, 2019

site so more than just insiders would know there was an opening. The ordinance also called for the entire council to discuss the appointees in a closed session, if necessary. WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON? The resolution came about because Mullock and fellow freshman council member Stacy Sheehan felt left out in the cold when appointments were made without their being consulted and then were expected to vote on those appointments. Mullock maintained the new rules would make the process “more transparent.” Leading the charge on the other side of the coin was Deputy Mayor Patricia Hendricks who maintained the new rules would actually discourage people from volunteering because the process — especially the closed door session — would be intimidating. She added that those interested in serving often show up at committee meetings to stay abreast. Their efforts, she added, are often rewarded in that they are then asked to serve on committees they showed an interest in. This was backed up by volunteer extraordinaire Rose Traficante, who said she would find a more formal process intimidating. Council member Shaine Meier said he changed his mind and would not vote for the ordinance, having been moved by the prospect that the new rules would discourage participation.

Mullock offered to drop paragraph five calling for a possible closed session meeting. Meier said he could only support the ordinance if paragraphs 2, 4, 5 and 7 were dropped. In other words — he wasn’t voting for the ordinance. BUT NOT SO FAST Our sources say this issue is not dead. FEELING THE LOVE! Council adopted an ordinance rescinding an ordinance they amended a few months back. This new ordinance, which passed in a 4-1 vote, rescinds term limits for Cape May Advisory Committees. This means that once on, you stay on until the administration changes or dissolves the committee. Councilmember Mullock was the dissenting vote. He maintained that all the surrounding municipalities have term limits “to avoid a monopoly and to ensure democracy.” WHAT ELSE HAPPENED? Council passed an ordinance in a 5-0 vote redefining the role of the council liaison on the Historic Preservation Commission, Shade Tree and Environmental commissions. Council liaisons are meant to convey information to other council members and to members of the commissions. They are not to par-

February 28, 2019 ticipate or opine on whatever issue is before the commission. Previously, the council liaison could speak to an issue. Now... Mum’s the Word. LET’S HEAR A HOORAH! Council, with Cape May Police Department Chief Tony Marino taking the lead, honored retiring Sergeant Thomas Connelly. Connelly served in the CMPD for 25 years. His family as well as other CMPD officers were present during the recognition ceremony. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house after his thankyou-very-much remarks. POINT OF ORDER City Solicitor Frank Corrado had to repeatedly school citizens at the meeting on Roberts Rules of Orders. WHEN CAN YOU SPEAK? Residents and interested parties can approach council on second reading of an ordinance because it requires a public hearing before a vote. Council also adopted a measure a while back allowing public comment before council votes on the resolutions before them. AH, BUT WHAT’S THE HITCH? The comments and questions must come before the individual resolutions are read and come up for a vote. TRANSLATION, PLEASE: When it’s resolution time, if you see a resolution about which you might have questions, you must speak then. Once they are actually reading the resolution, in other words, once you actually know what the resolution entails, you cannot comment. Which, we should note, is a huge step forward. Previously, no comment was allowed on the resolution part of the meeting. You especially cannot shout out comments from the peanut gallery. Very frowned upon. Understand? DID ANYTHING ELSE HAPPEN? Yes and no. Council met in a closed session to discuss litigation regarding the now out-of-business Broadway Pavilion that left owing the city rent money and to discuss other contract issues. No action was taken.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

wish the telephonic device had never been invented, and that instead of encouraging that tinkerer Alexander Graham Bell, I had struck him on the head with my walking cane. The thought came to mind the other day when I picked up the handset and found myself talking to a machine masquerading as a young ninny who was trying to tell me I had won a vacation. I handed it over to Young Albert, who delights in the sport of such things and was growling in interested fashion. He can do that for hours without the human who comes on the other end realizing he is a dog, and I am fairly sure he has a share in a beachside cabin in Ocean City as a result of his gruff, incomprehensible patience. I remember the night Bell invented the infernal device. We were occupying that mental state knowns as the Einstein Zone in the Admiral Hotel, that short-lived mood where one has had two fine malts, and before the third has kicked in, where clever ideas seem to burst forth like bees from a hive. Bell was doodling on a napkin and kept interrupting my own musings on whether or not “Call me

Ishmael” was a good way to start my autobiography (I had the working title D’Catur’s Dick — it was about my good self and Cape May’s improbably large humpback whale, Richard, who seemed to look on me with affection). “I have two perfectly functional ideas about to take shape!” Bell was barking in that annoying brogue of his. “What one will I write down, the machine that will usher in a time of world peace and an end to hunger and sickness, or a handset that allows you to talk nonsensically at people who also have one?”

Find Your Way Back...

With hindsight I should have chosen the former, but I had not been paying full attention, and also I find sustained periods of peacetime tedious, and so I said, “People always want to blather, Bell. Go with that one.” He vanished into the depths of the hotel and I drank some more with Ernie Hemingway, before Bell reappeared wearing a sailor hat and carrying what I took to be a suitcase with a trombone affixed to the top. He placed it on the bar and scuttled off trailing a cable, shouting, “This will be just the very thing for ships in trouble to call for help!” A moment later the damn thing inflated a set of bellows and the trombone parped and a tinny voice came out. “Ahoy!” it yelled! I was about to explain that there was an inherent flaw with the idea, given the need for a cable, and all, but Hemingway, who was in the Belligerent Zone, screamed, “Demon!” and shot it with his elephant gun. I was impressed by the distant shriek as the amplified sound reached Bell, and we toasted his success, though the chap never regained the use of his left ear.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, roller skating

can’t help thinking roller derby was invented by a family after one-toomany snow days. February already has a knack for feeling like the longest month of the year. Christmas toys have lost their novelty. A faint wet-wool smell lingers over everything. Cozy togetherness has turned into, “Must you chew so loudly?” Your beloved offspring can set your wheels spinning when spring seems far off. Time to hit the rink. Of course, you’re not actually going to knock each other down, though a bout of rock ’em, sock’ em relatives may sound tempting. Roller derby itself was not created as a contact sport. It was born of roller skating races and endurance contests in the late 19th century. An astute promoter noticed that spectators were as interested in dramatic falls as in who crossed the finish line first. In the 1930s, Leo Seltzer created the Transcontinental Roller Derby, in which teams of professional skaters competed for points. At first, contact between skaters was prohibited, but by 1940, it was encouraged. By the

1970s, roller derby became a spectacle like professional wrestling, with choreographed stunts, scripted storylines and cartoonish villains. Thanks to Texas Rollergirls, it enjoyed a rebirth in the 2000s. Modern roller derby has returned to its sporting roots, requiring safety equipment, fair hits and standard, flat tracks. Competitors increasingly use their real names, instead of aliases like Hermione Danger and Peach Clobber. The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, the sport’s governing body, has petitioned for inclusion in the Olympics.

Roller skating requires athleticism. The side-to-side motion uses muscles in your hips that are unchallenged by running, walking or cycling, and your gluteal muscles work hard enough to shake off the imprint of your couch cushions after your last TV binge. Your core muscles come into play as you keep your balance and your arms even get a little workout — flailing may not look pretty, but it does burn calories. You’ll get an aerobic workout, too, and singing along to the skating music helps to produce the endorphins necessary to shake off your winter doldrums. You and your family can give each other a little space while still helping each other out. Skate at Cape May Convention Hall on weekends through March 31, with special sessions for toddlers and teens. Admission is $5 for skaters, $2 for non-skaters. Bring your own skates, or rent — four-wheeled skates are $2 and inline skates are $4. A concession stand offers drinks and light snacks. You can also schedule a private party — call the Cape May City Recreation Department on 609884-9565 for more information.

The Movie Column

T

he Cape May Film Society held its annual Oscar Party Sunday, February 24 to a sellout crowd. The party was held in the Rose Room at Aleathea’s and we’re very grateful for their support and great food and service. Will Knapp was our Top Notch Trivia host. Do you remember Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder and the Oscar winner he shared the screen with? Answer: Matthew McConaughey. How about the two Oscar winners in the original Odd Couple? Answer: Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. Rounds about actors and actresses were won by the team Hong Kong Cavaliers, named for the rock group in Buckaroo Banzai. No matter where you go, there you are. There was also a raffle for gift baskets with movie themes. Patty Woodruff won a spa package and the film Crazy Rich Asians. Catherine Van Sciver from Burlington won a basket of Italian foods from Arthur Avenue with the movie Big Night. Craig Weidel from Court House won a basket with a DVD of Wonder Woman, but he gave it to his daughter,

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

saying he was already married to Wonder Woman. Thank you, Dottie and Mal Knapp, for that report from the party! Now for the show. It started unlike any Oscar show in recent history. No host, quicker to the presentations, moving acceptance speeches along. And with each of those acceptances, you saw the diversity in entertainment. Quite a turnaround from a few years ago! Bravo! Each award during the night offered everyone something to celebrate, no matter

their background or culture. The acceptance speech for Best Animated Feature, won by Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, says it all. The team of filmmakers said that many children everywhere could say that they “could relate to the lead character” in the film. If you haven’t seen this film, put it in your queue! There was diversity in the platforms on which films were released as well. Not all films were distributed exclusively in theaters — some were screened on Netflix simultaneously. And the streaming service was thanked throughout the night. Roma deservedly won for Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Language Film and Alfonso Cuaron won Best Director. This is an important film for many reasons — highlighting the life of a domestic worker, an indigenous woman. There were brilliant moments, though it wasn’t my favorite. Green Book won for Best Picture. THAT was my favorite! To quote the film’s director, “This film is about loving each other despite our differences.” And that seemed to wrap up the heart of this year’s award ceremony.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I took my wife to dinner Valentine’s Day to our favorite restaurant. Unfortunately, we were seated next to a young woman in her twenties and her father. The daughter spent nearly the entire time complaining to her father about his failure to lend her his car when she needed it. Apparently, no one in this young woman’s family would lend her a car. Not her mother. Not her sister. Not even her now ex-boyfriend. The whining was excruciating. For a while, we sat in silence listening — it was a train wreck. Her voice was so loud and high pitched it was hard not to listen. I did make an effort to start talking about other things — amusing things that we would laugh about, loudly. Perhaps we should have complained to the hostess, but I thought that would make matters worse. It

diminished our good time. What would the proper protocol have been? — Held Hostage Dear Hostage Ahh, the best-laid plans… The only thing you could do would be to ask that your table be changed. However, The Answer Lady is thinking that on a Valentine’s Day dinner night, that would have been fruitless. No one wants a scene — which most assuredly would have ensued. You did the right thing. You made the best of it. Think about it this way — the evening will be a memorable Valentine’s

dinner which you will laugh about for a long time. The Answer Lady’s advice is to get thee to Cape Winds Florist or Kate’s Flowers. A dozen red roses would be a nice way to put a positive end to a not so smooth evening. Dear Answer Lady My ex-husband is unreliable. This is fine when it comes to me and one of the reasons we’re no longer married, but our children are disappointed when he doesn’t show up at the time he says he would or doesn’t take them to the movies, to Morey’s Pier, or bowling or miniature golf. How do I explain this to them without enabling or lying to them? They are five and seven. — Worried Mom Dear Worried Tough one. You never want to undermine the other parent. It makes you look small and bitter. On the other hand, it puts you in an intolerable situation. Tell them that daddy means well but cannot always deliver. The Answer Lady suggests you buy season passes to Morey’s Pier. It will save you boatloads of money and give you both a back-up plan when promises made cannot be kept.

Bird Droppings

L

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ike most bird watchers, I enjoy traveling to distant corners of the planet to reap the harvest of native species, but I didn’t have time to board a plane and travel to East Africa, the Amazon or Antarctica, to name some of my favorite destinations without diving too deeply into the alphabet. All I had last Sunday was half an hour between writing assignments. But that half-hour could easily get me to another favorite location and back in time for a brew. That place is Strawberry Avenue near Port Norris. From the parking lot there is an elevated wooden boardwalk navigating one of the planet’s richest tidal marshes, the marshes of Delaware Bay, home to thousands of wintering waterfowl, nesting eagles and assorted other avian treasures. Passing the eagle nest on my way to the parking lot, I stopped to make sure Ma Eagle was on duty. Sure enough, her white head was showing just over the rim of the nest. Beneath her were likely three eggs that by July would be fledged young. Last year she and her mate got off three young, a sure sign that the Delaware

m a s s a g e b o d y s c r u b s & w r a p s

ecosystem is healthy and productive. It was too early for Osprey, but a resident Red-tailed Hawk was perched along the tree line. From out in the marsh, Canada Geese were calling, not the din of flocks but the conversational gabble of paired birds. Yes, even the geese were in the early stages of a new breeding season. Farther out in the marsh, a cloud of snow geese took wing, then settled. Then near the clam processing plat a thousand or so Herring Gulls lifted off and remained airborne. The eagle, it seemed had

gone over there. Bald Eagles are not picky eaters. Goose or gull, it’s all the same to them, Above the keening cries of gulls I could hear the chirping twitter of Green-winged Teal. This small hardy duck winters here by the thousands, fattening up for the long journey back to the Arctic. So late in the day and so early in the season, my field trip did not disclose any songbirds, except for the hundred or so blackbirds gathering to roost. Four hundred and twelve paces out, four hundred and twelve back. Natural wonders all around me and it didn’t cost more than half a gallon of gas. On the way home, taking the scenic route, I passed a flock of 60 turkeys foraging in a field and a scrawny black cat who was likewise birding. But as human minds do, mine was racing ahead to May, thinking about those neotropical migrants that will soon be returning from their winter retreats. Kentucky Warbler, Prothonotary, Blue Grosbeaks, all just weeks away, for the next time I decide to go birding abroad. Right here at home in the world-class birding destination in my own back yard.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

BUBBA would love a great retirement home where he can relax, purr, love, eat, sleep and keep you company. Bubba doesn’t have a mean bone in his body so making him great with visitors and grand kids. He is in very good health for an older guy and is very clean. Bubba also doesn’t eat too much so he won’t cost you too much either! Adopt!

PHOEBE is just like any modern girl who has special dietary needs. No grains for her! Now if you can’t afford her good food or clean litter, there is a song that comes to mind whenever Phoebe’s skin starts to act up. “Smelly cat, smelly cat? What are they feeding you? Smelly cat, smelly cat. It’s not your fault.” Give this cutie a home and adopt today!

DOC is just what the doctor ordered. Looking for your daily dose of love and joy brought on by a pet? Well you came to the right place! Let this cutie pie cure you of all your loneliness. Already have other cats? No problem! Doc is good with other cats and doesn’t mind sharing his love with others. Stop by the shelter and adopt Doc today!

“In a recent sale transaction, the lot we were buying had an extended contract time due to the State of N.J. D.E.P. approval time. The sales contract had to be amended and re-signed 3 times. Mr. Connolly was always ahead of the contract due dates and the sale was closed after 18 months of the state approval process. The success of the sale was due to Ed’s non-stop persistence.” — Bill M.
