Topping Off At Boarding House On March 13, the island’s newest hotel, the 11-room Boarding House on Lafayette, hosted a Topping Off Ceremony and behind-the-scenes look. The dog-friendly space, brought to you by the Hirsch family of Montreal Beach Resort, has a modern concept with rustic touches and a surf-inspired vibe. While the ethos will attract active-lifestyle enthusiasts, it also caters to those who prefer doing nothing on vacation (except lounging on a roof deck). Congrats to all!
St Patty’s Day At The C-View Inn P52-58
The Hirsch family and local council officials attended the Topping Off ceremony at the Boarding House — meaning, the last beam was laid in place for this cool new inn. More photographs in next week’s issue. Aleksey Moryakov

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS
Weird Sea Creature
Did You Know?
What We’re Reading
The vampire squid has a bit of an identity crisis — it is neither vampire, nor squid. The eight-armed creature gets its name not because it sucks blood, but because of the skin that connects those arms — it looks like a cape. This little guy is harmless. Instead of hunting for food, it feasts on particles that get attached to its sticky tentacles. Instead of releasing ink, it releases a colorless liquid that glows in the dark, attracting potential mates.
In 1609, while Lenni Lenape roamed the Cape, English captain Sir Henry Hudson was commissioned by the Dutch United East India Company, to find a new water route to Asia. The mission failed but, when Hudson’s ship struck ground, he was forced to wait in the Delaware Bay, and may have set foot on our peninsula. Disappointment back home was tempered by excitement over news of this uncharted peninsula. Several men followed in Hudson’s footsteps, including Dutch captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey, in 1621. Upon arrival here, he named it Cape Mey, later misspelled on paperwork.
The Spirit of Science Fiction Roberto Bolaño This 1984 novel from a late, great Chilean author tells the story of two bohemian young people — the poet Remo and the science fiction writer Jan — in Mexico City, both trying to create a life in the literary world.

Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week
E
very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: The family-owned Ocean View Diner and Family Restaurant on Beach Avenue. The music: Pearl Jam’s “Better Man.” Lead singer Eddie Vedder wrote the song in high school, likely inspired by wanting his mother to leave his stepfather. REM’s “Losing My Religion” also came over the speakers. As the kids say, we are HERE for this ’90s renaissance. The renovation: Well, well, well — the Ocean View has gotten a glo-up (something else those kids say). Translation: The place has swagger. Think rustic-industrial chairs; minimalist, micro-mesh shades; light grey walls that provide a feeling of both airiness and warmth; new chalkboards denoting specials; and white ceramic pendants lights. Don’t worry, that lovely Cape May mural on the back wall remains unchanged. The server: Kimberly. She’s attentive and friendly and, in the grand tradition of diner servers, calls you “honey” in a way that makes you feel seen. The conversation: We discussed the geopolitical ramifications of the 2009 global economic downturn. What can we say? Ocean View food is brain food. The food: Egg sandwiches all around! Jack ordered his on a croissant for “a little cosmopolitan flair.” The hot sauce: Sriracha. Fun fact: 20 million bottles are consumed globally per year. The EZ crew is responsible for roughly half. The hot tip: Did you know you can opt for tater tots over homefries? That’s… woke (as the kids say). The placemats: They come complete with ads and/or discounts for everything from tires to soap to funeral services, including one writeup of “Sun of a Bleach” cleaning service. Punny AND practical. The review: According to a writer from honestcooking.com, this place serves “upscale, beachy, diner food. I may have just invented that category of food, but it is truly the best way to describe it.” The parking lot: It’s not as tricky as Wawa’s, but it’s tight. No worries — Jack navigated it smoother than the butter on his cosmopolitan croissant.

Ramblings From The Editor
U
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
sually when hard-headed, business-minded Republicans are in the same conversation with social Democrats, eco warriors, bleeding-heart liberals and everything else in between, it gets ugly. It only takes a couple minutes of cruising through Facebook to see that. That wasn’t the case at Cape May’s Convention Hall on Monday, when it was clear that all of the above were standing on the deck of the building, agreeing on a common cause... taking a stand against seismic testing in the Atlantic Ocean, possibly off the shore of our lovely old town. The protest was called by the Clean Ocean Action group, with an impressive roster of speakers to advance the cause, including Representative Jeff Van Drew, who is co-sponsoring bills that would outlaw seismic testing and oil drilling in the Atlantic Ocean. However, who knows how long that would take. And, in the meantime, seismic
testing could actually begin in the very near future. Last November, the National Marine Fisheries Service, in its infinite wisdom, gave authorization to five different companies to engage in the practice, which scientists agree would either drive marine life away from our waters or kill them. Such a thing would devastate businesses in this area. Commercial fishing would be the biggest victim. And you could say goodbye to activities such as whale and dolphin-watching.
The war against seismic testing (and the oil drilling that would follow) is being fought on several fronts. Earlier this month, New Jersey joined eight other states to support a federal lawsuit brought by environmental groups to outlaw seismic testing. We’ve all seen that the man in the White House isn’t always given to outbreaks of common sense or logical thinking, but here’s hoping that he can take a look at the math and realize that offshore drilling in the Atlantic Ocean is, in technical terms, a really, really bad idea, and not just for us folks who either do business or pleasure here. The 130-mile New Jersey shoreline, which begins in Sandy Hook and ends in Cape May, generated $44 billion in tourism revenue, according to figures in 2016, supporting more than 838,000 jobs and generating $5.6 billion in federal taxes. Seismic testing wouldn’t just likely spell the end for, say, the endangered right whale... it would spell the end for a way of life at our beloved Jersey Shore.

The Exit Zero Filling Station Ambush Come get gas at our place and you might just get lucky!
It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places — from $3 off fudge to $15 off dinner. It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into Steve Holderness, from Bucks County, PA who was in town working on a buddy’s house on 1st Avenue. We asked him to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. He picked out a discount at The Original Fudge Kitchen. Who would he like to share this with? Wife Felicia, who loves fudge.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
s I sit and write to you through bleary eyes and with a very sore throat in the dawn hours of Tuesday morning (only 36 hours past deadline!), it’s hard to convey just how… intense this past week really was, but I’ll try… I was finally able to trade in my Exit Zero Filling Station gastender parka for a server’s uniform and interact with some humans on our freshly waxed floors (ahem) on a level a bit more personal than “Hi, what can I get you?” I mean, it’s kind of the same thing, serving food, serving gas... you know what I mean. EZFS has these new things called “Bartenders,” one of whom is Jimmy Murtha. Jimmy spent over a decade at the Brown Room, and all I’ll say is that their loss has been our gain. Then there’s Sean Haggerty, who texted me on Monday and had a job on Tuesday (I’m Trump-ian that way). Sean and I spent a lot of nights at Rio Station. He slung the drinks, I slung the tunes. Tish Roussos bartends, too, sometimes, but I’m not saying anything because she kind of scares me. Fins owner Jeff Gernitis, following the
sage advice of his gas man, had the Thai shrimp soup, perhaps the best thing on our menu. Thanks, Jeff, for talking me up to my boss, and for that birthday dinner a few weeks back. One of only two gifts I received this year, but I’m not bitter. (Oh, and who books your music? I know a guy in about 17 bands…) South Philly native Martin Collins and his lady friend Tina Franks, having heard about us all the way up in Somers Point, came in for lunch. (When you hit Somers Point, you know you’ve made it). My Beatles band came up in conversation (as it does in every conver-
sation I start) and he said, “You weren’t that Beatles band at the Cape May Brew Fest at the Physick Estate last year, were you?” (Okay listen, the actual quote was more like “were you those guys that played at that place that one time with all the beer and crabcakes?”, but I can’t print that). I said, “Yes.” He said (actual quote), “Man, we were just about to leave when we heard Sgt Pepper’s and turned back around.” That, right there, might be the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. Love Me Dudes keyboard player Sue Polcer and LMD Super Fans Dean Bloemer and Kathleen Scullion came in for drinks. Kathleen pointed out that, according to the closed captioning, the Washington Capitals were playing the Philapelphia Flys. And Dean made the bold statement that mystery writer John Sanford was as good if not better than Robert Crais, and almost caught these hands. I had four gigs in approximately 72 hours this past weekend, so all your inner monologues should sound like Will Arnett after a pack of Marlboros and a lot of whiskey. Or like me after a half-pack of Marlboro Lights

and a moderate amount of whiskey, which would probably seem like a lot of whiskey if you weren’t a seasoned whiskey drinker like me. (Million dollar idea: seasoned whiskey to pair with your EZFS curry, Nobody steal it.) Friday night, Love Me Dudes, my Beatles tribute, ripped it up at Carney’s. Many familiar faces beamed up at us in the newly renovated Main Room. Congras to the Carney Kids (Michael, Sean, James); the new room looks great, and that new brick oven pizza was outstanding. I got to play with my brother Mike, who was filling in for Herb Moore (strained left quad. Ha! Kidding. He had a conflict, but a sports injury sounds cooler). Mike is the reason I love music and the reason I’ve been flooding Cape May with tribute bands the last seven years. I mean, he’s also kind of a dick, but I love him. Anyone with a brother knows what I’m talking about. Saturday afternoon O’Brien & Joyce played Cape May Distillery in Green Creek. I would say I sang there, but that’s too strong a word. I spoke with the intent to sing. Some unforeseen sound issues Friday night (100% my fault) led to a little over-straining of the ol’ pipes, which aren’t as elastic as they used to be. So Saturday was… rough. Which is why it’s nice to have a wingman like Tim Joyce, who can not only pick up the vocal slack, but lecture you on overusing your voice while doing it. We even mixed in a Dolly Parton song for CMD bartender Tom Ward, who kept my glass at perfect bourbon-sipping level. Not sure if it was good for my throat, but it was real good for the rest of me. He and my dearest, oldest friend Lauren… Laura… Lori?... tended bar. Known hecklers Herb and Diane Mogck (Mo-JIK) hung out with us. Herb always enjoys stumping the band while Diane just gets drunk and mean. (Not true, but now she has something to yell at me about.) Herb and I had a nice chat about how the music you grow up with stays with you forever, and how he
March 21, 2019 thinks Love Me Dudes are better than the Beatles tribute he recently paid $50 to see. THAT might now be the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me. After the gig I went to see my boys Owen and Jackson in the LCMR musical, Curtains, which, while not a household name, gave every kid in it their moment(s) to shine. And as much as I love Owen, Jackson, Quinn Dougherty (spawn of a Dude), Evan Warburton, Evan Smilyk, Katie King, Reid Shriver, Katie Beane-Fox and everyone else I’m running out of room to list, and as much as I’ve enjoyed watching you all work together since seventh grade, my man Aaron Agostini stole that damn show right out from under you. YOU SHOULD ALL BE VERY PROUD. But Aaron should be just one skoach prouder. On St. Patrick’s Day, O’Brien & Joyce made their Nauti Spirits debut which, I think, was a success. I mean, nobody booed and our tip jar was pretty full. Our friend Marnie Lengle, who keeps the trains running in Stone Harbor (she organizes the Harbor Square tribute concerts), brought cheese and crackers, but opted not to sing, giving me the old, “It’s not you, it’s me…” That, right there, is the meanest thing anyone has ever said to me. We closed out our weekend with our first gig in the newly refurbished Brown Room, where I sang with both vocal cords tied behind my back, yet managed some of my best work of the weekend. Randy Redelico almost got himself tackled by the woman who thought he was stealing our tip jar and Wendy made a new best friend and competitor in the Terry’s Biggest Fan Club (measured in appreciation of Terry, not size of fan). It was just a really great day and night and I went home knowing I didn’t leave any bullets in the chamber. And just like that I am out of room to tell you about my new summer band project, so you’ll just have to come back again. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
Y
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ou may have read in this newspaper, or watched on the televisual, about cities adopting tiny electrically powered scooters for people to zip around on. Or you may not — I confess I only read my own column, as well as those rare but heartrending pages about dogs who are looking for a good home. I have my manservant Kitchener read them aloud to me: “Razor is a 300lb cross, who is a total sweetheart and wants only to be cuddled all day. His tiny foibles include a deep hatred of children, a total intolerance for other dogs, a ferocious dislike of people in uniform and a tendency to express his anxiety by reducing every piece of furniture in the house to matchwood if left unattended for more than seven seconds.” At the end of every one, Young Albert will bark dismissively and since he has legal veto of any proposed new pets, none of those lovely animals end up here. Also, I confess I do not watch the regular “news” channels, preferring to stick to Cape May-ncient TV: Programming for the Elderly and Intransigent. This is a 24-hour channel devoted to citizens over the
age of 80, who are each given five minutes in which to complain, rage, judge and tell anecdotes about “the old days”. On the hour, there is a slot sponsored by Wildwood Laxatives: Moving Stories to Move Your Bowels that highlights the clear and present danger that strangers or “people not like us” pose to old Cape May people, whether by casual contact in the street (“A Shoebie Bumped Me, and Gave Me Comsumption”) or random evil (“Jeffrey Dahmer Stopped Me And Asked for Directions, Once. He Was Very Polite”).
Find Your Way Back...
Anyways, back to the tiny electric scooters. One of my irritating descendants was buzzing around The D’Catur Mansion on one, recently. The dreadful youth was making fast progress until he inexplicably caught his front wheel in my walking cane, and continued at a great rate of knots down the hall into the trophy room, minus the scooter. I seem to have hundreds of grasping great-great nephews and he will not be missed. I am not sure we shall get the stains out of the bison head, though. This is why we will never allow such a scheme in our city. Can you imagine thousands of Shoebies whizzing past, XXXXL white tees billowing like sails? Instead, we have invested in e-Pogo-sticks. Not only are they a delight to watch, but the powerful little batteries will allow bounces of up to six feet, depending on rider obesity. The noise will be minimal, and other than the casual risk of decapitation, I can see no downside. Also, we are having a secret remote added to every one, that will allow an impartial judge such as myself to send any antisocial or underspending visitors off to The Point, to hop neatly into the water.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the gift of music
usic is a gift. It offers cheap emotional support, whether you are despondent or delighted. Medical professionals recognize this, and use music to treat a variety of disorders. Music reaches patients with Alzheimer’s when nothing else can, offering a social connection and a feeling of security. People can relearn to speak by putting their sentences into a singsong cadence. Singing or playing music helps to regulate breathing, and music’s mood-enhancing benefits help people with everything from schizophrenia to heart disease. We amateurs self-medicate with music. Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” has been a boon to the heartsick since 1978, but some patients need an additional dose of Patsy Cline’s “Crazy” or Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger.” Broadway show tunes cure a variety of ills. I went to high school in the ’80s, so I prescribe myself Pat Benatar and Cyndi Lauper when I need an infusion of courage. For my daughters, Halsey and Ariane Grande do the job. “Bohemian Rhapsody” singalongs
cross generations, as do Elton John, Simon and Garfunkel and Billy Joel. And because we are in New Jersey, The Four Seasons, Springsteen and Bon Jovi take the sting out of household chores. We may have spent the weekend scrubbing guano out of the attic, but hey, big girls don’t cry, right? We’re tougher than the rest, and we’re going to have a nice day, so we’ve got that going for us. When your voice is sore from singing, take time to listen to live music. In summer, you can choose your venue by walking around town until something catches your
fancy. In March, you have to plan a little, at least until Cape May Singer Songwriter infuses the town with music on March 29 and 30. Until then, find live music at the Cape May Winery every Friday in their Tap Room Happy Hour. On Saturdays 2-5, local musicians are featured. Visit capemaywinery.com for information. At Willow Creek Winery, Fire Pit Fridays offer wine, tapas, and music under the stars. Look for Kenneth Richardson at The Ebbitt Room on weekends for the music of the Eagles and Motown. The newly renovated Brown Room has music most nights, featuring artists like Darin Macdonald on the piano, or the acoustic duo, the Honeyhawks. Downstairs at the Boiler Room you can find a live band playing danceable music. The Congress Hall Winter Concert Series offers Troika — modern country music with a dash of pop and EDM — in the ballroom on Sunday, March 24 at 7:30pm. Come for dinner and a show - $36.99 for adults, $9.99 for dinner. The concert alone is $15.99. Visit caperesorts.com for details.

OPEN YEAR ROUND

ARIES You will play a game of rock, paper, scissors to see who’s buying drinks at Oyster Bay tonight. You will find it odd that it takes as much effort to lose that game as it does to win it. TAURUS You will buy a houseplant, and you will talk to it. Don’t panic — it will not talk back. GEMINI You will buy a reusable water bottle from West End Garage in an attempt to up your water intake. You will fill it with vodka instead. CANCER You will organize your books by color. You will never again be able to find the book you are looking for. LEO You will set out to spend your weekend catching up with old friends. But you will cancel plans to look at cute photos of inflated puffer fish on Google and watch reruns of The Golden Girls instead. VIRGO You will go for a short run along the Cold Spring Bike Path. You will stop once to tie your shoes, four times to pet a dog, twice to check your email, and three times because running is hard and whose idea was this anyway? LIBRA You will give your bike a tune-up for spring. You will make an unfortunate joke about being a “cycle-path.” SCORPIO You will try the new buffalo chicken panini from the Exit Zero Filling Station. You will tell all your friends how delicious it is. SAGITTARIUS You will contemplate which “Harry Potter” house is your best fit. You will decide you are a Gryffindor while everyone knows you are a Slytherin. CAPRICORN You will eat an impressive amount of pizza from Blue Moon. You will not know whether to feel proud or ashamed. AQUARIUS You will come into a new word-of-the-day calendar. You will skillfully work contumacious into a sentence. PISCES You will write your legislators opposing seismic testing and offshore drilling off our coast. You will have good karma for the rest of the year.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
T
his year marks the anniversary of the first man landing on the moon. Let’s look at two movies: First Man (a narrative film) and Apollo 11 (a documentary). Apollo 11 is an expertly edited and produced collection of actual footage that tells the story of the first landing on the moon. The retelling of the story is nostalgic and revealing about just how much money was spent on this pursuit. The expanse of the program is captured in sweeping pans of control rooms and airfields. First Man is the latest film from a director who’s getting a lot of exposure the last few years. Damien Chazelle is the director who won an Oscar for his 2016 film La La Land, while is 2014 film Whiplash won three Oscars. First Man won an Oscar for its visual effects, but of this director’s three most popular films... this latest would have to be ranked third. The film gets high marks for presenting diverse viewpoints (in the story with woeful lack of diversity otherwise) on the space
did produce the movie). It seems like this era ushered in a whole lot of, “They can put a man on the moon, but…” As in, “They can put a man on the moon, but they can’t find a way to [fill in your own complaint here.]” For me, I would fill in the blank with “make healthcare affordable for everyone” or “build affordable housing.” Couldn’t the advances we made in satellite programming or GPS been made without walking on the moon? The beginning of First Man provided maybe a tiny reason for moonwalk madness beyond male bravado or ego. Ryan Gosling portraying astronaut Neil Armstrong says (paraphrasing), “Travel allows us to see things we didn’t see before.” As we start thinking about the summer season, I do remember that travel does changes us. Adventure takes us away from our element. Did we have to go all the way to the moon to prove that? Couldn’t we have just offered these astronauts a trip to Cape May? Put your boots around and walk on the sand — probably the same feeling!
race of the 1960s. He spent a little time on opposing opinions as to whether we should have been in such a hurry to walk around the moon for a few minutes. Also in its favor, the film doesn’t shy away from telling of the lives lost in pursuit of taking that short stroll. One of the highlights was the Gil Scott-Heron song Chazelle dared to put in this film. But apart from these small departures, this storyline was frankly too simple — or should I say too Hollywood (after all, Steven Spielberg

T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am a very busy mother of three and I prepare dinner nearly every night. In order to make things run smoothly, I have a certain system of organizing the kitchen. When I am making dinner, I don’t want to play hide and seek. The problem is I cannot get my kids or my husband to empty the dishwasher and put everything where I want it. Do I just tell them not to bother? Do I have a seminar on the “Everything has a place” topic? Do I give up and resign myself to kitchen chaos? — Kitchen Nazi Dear Kitchen Oh my. The Answer Lady understands the problem first hand, but alienating the very people trying to help you is a greater issue. The first thing you can do is to slip over to Swain’s and buy yourself a few organizer
Wise answers to perplexing questions
baskets for your drawers and mark them — “gadgets, cooking utensils, measuring tools, miscellaneous crap.” That will help everyone to stay on the same page. Try marking the cabinets as well — glasses versus coffee cups; bowls versus saucers. This should accomplish two things — alert your family that you are compulsive-obsessive (as if they don’t already know that) but also give them a guide to what you expect. You might also bring them into the cooking process. That would give them a real idea of why organization is so important.
Dear Answer Lady My son’s wedding is in late August and I am looking for a gown that would be appropriate. However, I live in fear of the bride’s mother, who is a fashionista. I know she’s combing the designer stores as we speak. I cannot afford a designer gown, nor do I really want that. I just don’t want to look frumpy and dowdy. Now how do I avoid that? — Scared Mother-of-the-Groom Dear Scared Come on. Put your big girl panties on. The Answer Lady does not care how much your co-mother-in-law spends — no one can upstage the bride nor you, unless you let them. Stick with a classic style that is flattering to every figure, usually an A-line for a tealength and a straight line for a gown. No waist enhancements. Don’t think you have to stick to blue either — wear a color that is flattering. You might want to stop into Kaleidoscope and think about a fascinator. A hat might be too much but a fascinator could give you just the lift you need without breaking the bank. Breathe. You’re really just a bystander here.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
en thousand species of birds on the planet, but the most beautiful of them all is right here in Cape May. You’ll excuse my partiality but is there anything more stunning than a male cardinal? I don’t think so. Not this side of Ecuador, anyway. So imagine my visual shock at turning the corner here at Cape May Bird Observatory and seeing 13 crimson-garbed birds festooned in the bushes and feeders just outside the window. Not a record tough. I once counted more than 20 males in Hunterdon County, birds gathering to roost. It was this gathering that prompted me to keep counts of cardinal aggregations. I’ve learned that the large, colorful sparrows gather after the breeding season because many eyes see approaching danger better than two. Being colorful has major advantages during the breeding season. Female cardinals select in favor of the most colorful
males. Color in cardinals signals health and somebody who knows how to be a good provider. So the brightest cardinal gets the girl but being a bright red cardinal is a liability for the rest of the year. It makes it easy for hunting hawks to single you out when a flock takes wing. This is why many male birds shed their courtin’ clothes after breeding and
drab down to become less conspicuous. But changing your entire wardrobe is energetically expensive. The cardinal strategy of keeping one suit of cloths but traveling in a protective convoy makes energetic sense. Blue Jays have much the same strategy. Other birds solve the problem by being exceptional vocalists. In these species, most notably mimids, like mockingbird, the guy who has the greatest vocal array gets the girl. Outside the breeding season all you have to do to keep from being eaten is keep your mouth shut. But any day now, the gonads will start sizzling and male cardinals and mockingbirds will hitch themselves aloft and announce their presence and intentions with song. It’s what songbirds do. And the days of seeing bachelor flocks of cardinals outside my window will be over for another season. From here on in two males in the same bush is one too many.
