Singer Songwriter Weekend Line-Up P34-35

PAL Comedy Night At Convention Hall P40-51

We are in the middle of the Shaken and Stirred Chopped Bartender competition, hosted by 5 West Pub. Twelve participants — all local bartenders competing for a $100 gift card to 5 West, a nice bottle of booze and, of course, bragging rights — have five minutes to make the best cocktail possible from a mystery box of ingredients. Winner of the first round (March 14) was Mike Wilson of Carney’s. Winner of the second round (March 21) was Andrew Steiner of The Establishment at 100 in Wildwood. Another round of competition kicks off today (March 28), followed by the championships on April 4. Best of luck to all involved, and... cheers! Top: Team Kat Left: Denise, Kenneth and friend

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

Last week, The Atlantic profiled the mola, a “big, weird, pancake-shaped fish,” aka a “5,000-pound bag of secrets.” Picture googly eyes and an ability to play dead. It has giant, ridiculous-looking fins that extend 14 feet from its body, helping it to motor at more than 21 feet per second. Despite their huge size, they’re harmless to humans. They ARE a danger to themselves in captivity, because they bang up against aquarium glass.

In 1991, the Army Corp of Engineers admitted that, in digging a canal between Cape May’s harbor and the Delaware Bay to protect American ships during World War II, they’d left the town’s beaches vulnerable. Jetties had been extended to protect this canal, and these jetties did their job. But they also starved Cape May’s beaches of sand. The government reacted by pumping, via dredge, an initial 900,000 cubic yards of sand onto the Cape May’s main beach, and they’ve done so every two years since. This was the first federally funded project of its kind in the state.

Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Oyster Bay. The seats: At the bar. But we did not order from the bar menu because we are rebellious like that. (Okay, not that rebellious. You’re allowed to order from the regular dinner menu here.) The vibe: Casual, but not too casual. The server: Krista. Super friendly. And she didn’t mind accommodating Jack’s persistent, persnickety request that his Manhattan be served without rocks but in a rocks glass, because martini glasses are, apparently, too dainty for his masculine hands. The starter: We began with the fried tomatoes and crabmeat app. The tomatoes are coated in panko breadcrumbs (which are lighter, airier and crispier than regular BCs) before being fried and topped with a spicy New Orleans-style remoulade sauce. Yes, this tasty treat DID launch a discussion about Fried Green Tomatoes, the movie. We love you, Ruth and Idgie! The mains: Let’s talk about that seafood pot pie, because we think we blacked out for a minute. Is it possible to be turned on by a lobster cream sauce? Turns out, yes, if it’s made with gruyere. There are also chunks of lobster, savory scallops and flavorful shrimp in there, plus hearty potatoes and peas. Jack immediately emailed Oyster Bay owner/ chef Chris Holl to let him know they’ve forever ruined him for other pot pies, dammit. We also ordered the oh-so-tender braised short ribs with natural pan gravy, cremini mushrooms (which hold up very well in that gravy, we should say), and cherry tomatoes over pappardelle pasta. That’s the broad, flat kind if you, like Diane, love pasta as much as life itself but have trouble keeping track of which kinds are flat and which kinds are swirly. (Yes, she says “swirly.” And yes, she’s Italian. For shame.) The run-in: We chatted briefly with Brady Schoenrock and his business partner Jeff Raiczyk. These gentlemen, of whom the EZ crew are fond, own Harpoons on the Bay, opening April 12. The on-deck meal: We’ve got our eyes on you, crispy duck breast with Vermont maple glaze. We’ll be back.

Inside City Hall

All the matters, murder and mayhem (we’re exaggerating) from Cape May City Council, by Susan Tischler QUOTE OF THE NIGHT “I don’t know who came up with the phrase Cape May Renaissance. I hope it was me, but it describes perfectly what has happened over the last 50 years.” MAC (Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities) president Tom Carroll, describing Cape May’s transformation from rundown to National Historic Landmark Status. ON A POSITIVE NOTE City Council opened its regular meeting to a standing-room only crowd, many of whom were there representing MAC in honor of the official dedication of the Historic American Building Survey (HABS) Exhibit Dedication. WHAT’S THAT? Last spring MAC put together an exhibit of Cape May’s architecture — a then and now — of the Victorian town’s most prominent examples of period architecture first researched by a team led by the late Carolyn Pitts. Some of the original team, among them historic preservationist Hugh McCauley, got together and assembled an exhibit of photographs, architectural drawings and summaries of the stately

structures. MAC looked for a permanent home for the exhibit, which had been on display at the Physich Estate’s Carriage House and found one in City Hall. MAC president Tom Carroll spoke before the crowded room and singled out curator Karen Fox, designer Jean Barraclough, MAC Director Michael Zuckerman, historic preservationist Hugh McCauley, Assistant City Manager Jerry Inderwies, Jr and a boatload of others. MOVING FORWARD? City Council, in 3-2 vote, moved forward on construction of a Public Safety Building (PSB) with the

hiring of USA Architects of Philadelphia. Specifically, the resolution called for a $142,847 contract [Phase One is $70,000. Phase Two $72,000] which is for conceptual designs and engineering schematics for the proposed PSB, which would be built in the same area where the fire department is now, combining both fire and police and other services in a 30,000 square-foot facility. BUT WAIT – WHY 3-2? WHO WAS OPPOSED? Mayor Chuck Lear, Deputy Mayor Tricia Hendricks and Council Member Shaine Meier were for. Just to make sure everyone understood his vote, Meier shouted his, “yes.” That left the new kids on the block — council members Zack Mullock and Stacy Sheehan — as the dissenters. DID THE PUBLIC HAVE ANYTHING TO SAY? OH YEAH. Barney Dougherty, Co-chair of the Public Safety Advisory Committee charged with the task of finding an architect (eight were considered), complained about approving both Phase One and Phase Two in one action. Although he said the committee was unanimous on the

EXIT ZERO architect selection, they were not unanimous about whether the site is big enough to accommodate both police and fire. Resident Christine Miller didn’t like anything about the resolution, most particularly the manner in which the architect was chosen and called for a referendum and a no vote on the resolution. Resident Bill Seeger also questioned the methodology used in the selection process, citing that the winner was at one time 52 points behind and in fifth place. “How did they woo you,” he asked, and go from fifth to first? Meier, the council representative on the building committee, said USA took the day because they were willing to stand up to the public scrutiny when it came to presenting their design. Other architectural contenders were not. And “their presentation was stellar.” FABULOUS, DARLING, SIMPLY FABULOUS In a self-described “dramatic” and passionate endorsement of USA, resident Rose Traficante, who also served on the PSB advisory committee, agreed that USA’s presentation was “fabulous.” In explaining the 52-point disparity, she maintained it was the difference between how someone looks on paper versus how they are in the interview. She also said the committee checked references and some were “Meh.” WHY DID THE NEW KIDS VOTE NO? Council Member Sheehan agreed with Barney Dougherty that the space eyed for the PSB is not big enough. The proposed structure, she said, is 50% larger than Convention Hall. “I want this to be the best building they can have,” she said and suggested that the city only move forward on a new fire station while still using the police station at West Cape May. And think about a new police station at a later date. “If we separate them, we won’t have a parking issue,” she said. Council Member Mullock called the resolution hiring

March 28, 2019 USA “a mess.” He also called the plan to build a public safety building without a referendum “ridiculous.” And he agreed with Sheehan and Dougherty, as well as the recently deceased advisory committee chair and former mayor Jerry Gaffney in their opinion that the site proposed for the PSB is not adequate. Or as the late Mr Gaffney put it, “It’s like putting a size 12 foot into a size 10 shoe.” Mullock concluded that “adding an architect to this mess would be a disaster” and ultimately commits the city to a $714,00 total contract with USA. He also implied that there was something a bit untoward in the hiring of USA in that they were hired to work on a similar project in Collingswood. WHAT’S THE CONNECTION? Cape May hired the mayor of Collingswood as a redevelopment consultantfor $14,000. Meier said Mullock was “grandstanding.” THE RESOLUTION STILL PASSED. WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? In order to build a Public Safety Building, which would cost an estimated $10 million, the city must pass a bond. In order to do that, council by law must approve the motion by four votes. They don’t have it. NOT FEELIN’ THE LOVE At the end of the meeting, Police Chief Tony Marino expressed his displeasure with the dissenters, stating that he and his department were quite happy with the proposed co-existence and said Sheehan’s and Mullock’s resistance proved that they think the fire department is more important than the police department. MONEY TALK City Council in a 5-0 vote introduced the 2019 budget for consideration which calls for a $1.25 tax hike. A public hearing on the budget will be held April 16 at 6pm. HOW MUCH WILL THIS COST ME? CFO and City Manager Neil Young helped us out here with the math. If you own a $500,000 home in Cape May, it will cost you $62.50 a year more than you were paying.

The $31.1 million preliminary budget includes the hiring of three new firefighters. The City Manager’s budget introduced at the last meeting called for a nine-tenth of a cent increase on a $30.8 million budget but did not include the hiring of the three firefighters that Fire Chief Alex Coulter had asked for like three years ago. Former city council candidate John Van der Vaarst pointed out that the one cent hike adopted last year included a half cent to cover former Police Chief Rob Sheehan’s lawsuit settlement. He said that should have expired and that then makes the tax increase $1.75 cents. City Manager Young said other expenses, particularly the recycling crisis the city faces, forced the increase. NOT HING SAYS WELCOME LIKE A HUGE PARKING METER HIKE City Council introduced an ordinance which if approved, would double the parking meters in and around the Washington Street Mall and the beachfront. Currently, the meters are $1 an hour or 25 cents per every 15 minutes. If approved, they will spike to $2 an hour or 50 cents per every 15 minutes. Final reading and a public hearing on the matter will be held April 16. TRASH TALK So, if you think the hiring of an architect was sticky…. Cape May went into the recycling business Tuesday night when council approved the purchase of two trucks for an expenditure of $189,283. Not included in this action but included in the 2019 budget is also the hir-

ing of four people to drive the truck and pick up the recycling. Council member Sheehan said she wanted to explain to people what happened. Apparently, the contract with the provider expired December 31, 2018. At that time the cost of picking up recycling went from $180,000 to $560,000 — an increase of slightly over 2%. Sheehan said the city was late putting the contract out to bid forcing the city to have to act “with our backs against the wall.” Mullock was a bit more blunt and said, “This was a screw-up. We should not be getting into the recycling business while everyone else is getting out.” City Manager Young quickly shot back, “This was not a screw -p.” Young said the primary purchaser of recycling is China and they no longer are interested in that business. With nowhere to sell the goods, the price of picking them up has dramatically increased, trickling down to the individual municipalities. Mullock said the city should have considered a contract that would be more attractive to the smaller recycling collectors. There are only two providers large enough to handle Cape May’s volume in the summer months. WANT TO OWN A RESTAURANT? Cape May is looking for an enterprising restaurateur to take over the Broadway Pavilion grill at Broadway Beach. The previous owner baled owing the city. So, good news — they city kept the equipment. Opening bid? $25,000.

I

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

look forward to a boring week one of these weeks. This week was not that week. I started with a real Curb Your Enthusiasm of a Monday. Because of some payroll snafus but mostly because I’m poor, I came home from dropping my wife off at work and depositing several large-ish checks in the bank to find the power turned off. No problem, I thought, I just put a bunch of money in the bank. That’ll clear in two days. And it’s cold out. And I have no heat… A check! I can write a check! Like they did in olden times! That’ll take a couple days to clear while my paychecks clear, and I can go to the Wal-Mart right near my house! Perfect! So after 20 minutes in the customer service line, it’s my turn. “You can take a check, right?” I ask. “Sure, we do it all the time. We just need you account number.” “Shit.” So I called the electric company, got the account number, waited 20 more minutes in the customer service line, and said, “Here’s my check with my account number.” “Ooh,

sorry we can’t take a check. Not sure why, this is the first time it’s ever happened.” So with steam shooting from my ears I drive to the electric company office in Court House, which I could have done TWICE while I was in Wal-Mart, hand over the check and use the direct line in the office to speak with an agent. “Now, be sure you’re main breaker is in the off position when the service truck shows up or you’ll have to wait another 24 hours.” “When will they show up?” “Not sure, could be 12 hours, could be 12 minutes.” “Shit.”

So I hustled home, stopping long enough for a bag of Arby’s because that shit is good, and waited. By 3pm the lights were back on and nobody was the wiser. It was around this time I was told I had to get to the MUA or the water would be turned off. And on Wednesday, our Dodge Caravan gave up the ghost, so now we’re paying twice what we should for a Toyota Highlander because our credit sucks because stuff like having your electric turned off keeps happening. Every once in a while as I move through my day I look for the camera, because there’s no way this stuff happens in real life. It’s good we can laugh at this stuff. Did You Know of the Week: Arby’s is an anagram for “America’s roast beef, yes sir.” Have I blown your mind? Thank-Yous of the Week: To the crew over at 101.5 WCFA-LP, who had me on the radio twice last week. First I was on The Locals, with my homies DJ Lil’ Ed McDonough, gadabout John Cooke, President Michael Clark, Brady “The Bunch” Schoenrock, Shaine Meier “The Liar” (Veep

reference, Shaine is an honest dude, far as I know) and Joe “No Nickname” McLaughlin, with Tom “Maddie’s Dad” Hogan running sound. We talked about the renovation of Exit Zero Filling Station, and I think I’m now qualified to testify before Congress as I answered every question with a variation on “I believe” or “to the best of my recollection” and “I was told there would be no math.” We then talked about all my upcoming tribute gigs that I’m sure you’re all sick of hearing about so I’ll give you a week off (Billy Joel tribute, 4/6 at Cabanas, 8-12). I then signed off to start my wait shift while they continued on with topics of interest to the citizenry of our little hamlet. All good stuff and these guys are really plugged in and know what they’re talking about. But I also think a little bit it’s an excuse to hang out, shoot the breeze and have a couple beers. What’s more Local than that? A couple days later I had a brief sit-down with Mike Madigan, who’s attended a few Love Me Dudes shows and wanted a little insight into the volcanic, explosive hive of talent and creativity that is my mind, which I granted. He and his wife Kathy host a Wednesday morning show which simulcasts two-and-ahalf hours later in Newfoundland. Turns out his story is much more interesting than mine; a One D Madigan from Limerick, not a Two D sheep-stealing Maddigan from Cork, his thrice-removed cousin Maggie Madigan was a Titanic survivor. She is buried in Queens, NY, with a plaque that reads “In the hearts of strangers,” as it was the people of Newfoundland who donated the money for her marker, a wrought-iron cross. Cease & Desist of the Week: If you are the person or persons slicing into the palettes of magazines in the wee hours of Thursday mornings to get your weekly Exit Zero fix, please knock it off. While we appreciate your enthusiasm, doing this on a rainy day destroys dozens, sometimes

March 28, 2019 100s of copies, which translates into 1000s of views you’re depriving our readers of. I bet if you tried you could wait. Also, we have cameras. I waited on the lovely Patricia Rainey this weekend, and her friend Denise Reinhart, as they noshed on burgers and sipped Bloody Marys. Patricia is a watercolorist of some renown and just has that glint. She asked how long I’d been writing my column. “About 15 years,” I replied. “But I’ve been a wise ass for 49.” “I know,” she answered with a grin. Well played, Patricia. Jesse Lambert swung by and, as always, hopped off with a Margerita Salmon sandwich. Jesse runs Coffee Tyme (beachfront and mall). I’m not sure if EZFS IT guy Mike Mole was annoyed or amused when, upon meeting his family (lovely wife Brittany, precocious daughter Autumn), I said, “You must be the Mole people!” I’ve only ever seen one expression on Mike’s face; harried. Working for Jack Wright, I totally get it, man. While delivering magazines last week I felt like I was trapped in the world’s slowest action movie as the giant Avalon house crept south down Seashore Road and a funeral procession crept north. It looked like they were on target to meet somewhere near the West Cape May bridge. When they get there I’ll tell you if I hear anything. How mad are you that Trump is innocent? Thank you, Dennis and Kathleen Hughes for the go bags! I was a hurtin’ puppy in the midst of a thousand gigs last weekend, so they gave me and Tim Joyce a little bag full of Tylenol, Pepto, 5 Hour Energy, water and fine cocaine. (Just kidding, there was no water.) Nice, right? Wouldn’t you know it? I’m out of room to tell you about my Carney’s band project. Check back next issue. (Think Beatles, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Prince.) ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

was wondering if this fine newspaper might need a new slogan. The thought came to mind the other day when some oaf in the street called me “an enemy of the people”. At least I think that’s what he meant — he was inebriated and slurred that I was “an enema of the peephole”, which actually sounds rather exotic. I think the fool was outraged about my previous column whereby I decried dictators, but then he was rather hairy, and so might have been mad about my account of this fine city once having an ape as mayor, and why that cannot happen again. Or possibly both — while orang utans are the gentlemen and women of the money world, chimps are buffoons with delusions of grandeur. Had I not delivered a stunning blow to the temple with the side of my hand, I might have heard his excuse. The last thing he heard before slumping unconscious (I deposited him at The Point, where he would wake up naked, and embarrassed, and possibly taken to be a sacrifice to the mer-people who live in the Concrete Ship) was me shouting defiantly: “A sprightly sheet full of the sprays of the old ocean!”

Don’t get me wrong — I love the tagline. It reminds me of simpler, gayer times. But as the last line of defense against the powers of darkness and idiocy, I think we need something that is more inspiring. I did consider the old and mostly forgotten family motto, derived from the ancient Scotch language, Gaelic: “Pogue mahone”. It means “truth and justice above all” if the late great Ma D’Catur is to be believed. But it sounds rather stuffy. There is the founding Cape May Fathers and Mothers’ city slogan — “Give us your dimes, your quarters,

Find Your Way Back...

your huddled dollars yearning to be spent” — but while I approve of the sentiment it is perhaps not going to inspire the young, who I am told (by themselves) are the future. So we* are opening it up to a contest, where you will have a say. You are to write your suggestion on a piece of paper, using cursive, or failing that a nice crayon, and your task is to encapsulate this city’s spirit, its drive and citizens and their mission on Earth, in no less than five and no more than a dozen words, excluding cusswords, the words “great again”, “twinned with Philadelphia” or “everyone is welcome”. The winner will not be chosen in a public ceremony, nor featured on the front page of this newspaper, and will certainly not see their entry go into actual use, or win a dinner for two at the remarkably lovely Exit Zero Filling Station that has recently re-opened, to great acclaim and rave reviews. * “We” being myself and Young Albert, whose own suggestion — “no cats allowed. So there” is catchy but impractical, independent of the change-resistant Scotch editor of this newspaper.

W

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, streetside history

hen you walk the streets of a familiar town, you encounter the little pieces of your personal history. Here’s the park where you learned to ride your brother’s old Sting Ray, with the high handlebars and banana seat. There’s the bar where you had your first legal drink, a sloe gin fizz. That bank cashed your first paycheck. These events didn’t seem old fashioned at the time, but they make your kids laugh. Life before ATMs and mobile banking seems like ancient history to them, and completely normal to me. History is mostly a collection of ordinary events, after all. When you wander the streets of Cape May, you encounter little pieces of our larger history, and you can soak it all in without leaving the sidewalk. Walk the streets of Cape May’s historic district on a glorious spring day. Cape May is rich in “contributing properties” which add to the “historical integrity” of our National Historic District, making it easy to imagine life in another era. There are about 70 such homes in town, from the once-identical homes on

Jackson Street, designed by Philadelphia architect Stephen Decatur Button, to the Chalfonte Hotel on Howard, to the Mission Inn on New Jersey. Pass the Soldiers Monument on Columbia and consider the staggering impact of the Great War, and the hope, when the monument was raised in 1923, that it truly had been the “war to end all wars.” Walk along Congress Street and imagine sitting on a porch in 1878, days after a great fire destroyed half the town, marveling that your street was spared and wondering whether the town would recover. Stroll down Hughes

and speculate on the friendships formed at the Girls’ Friendly Society since 1896. Ponder whether the Cherry House started as a private home in 1849, or whether it is actually older and once served as slave quarters. Wander to 653 1/2 Washington and look at the Colonial House/Memucan Hughes house. Imagine you are a Quaker attempting to persuade Hughes — the largest slave owner in the area — to become an abolitionist. (Some accounts say he freed his 12 slaves when he “found religion” late in life, others say he still owned slaves when he died in 1812.) Speculate on whether this small house is really “colonial” or whether it is as “recent” as 1800. Consider whether Hughes and his fellow tavern licensee, James Whilldun of South Broadway, were friendly rivals. Pick up a Family Treasure Hunt packet from the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities to use as a guide and learn a little about architecture as you roam. The packet is $5, and there is an answer sheet. Or, just wander, and pick up Ben Miller’s The First Resort history book for details later.

The Quicky Horoscopes Your near future in two sentences by Lady Diane

OPEN YEAR ROUND

Washington Common, Cape May 609-884-8643 l lynnardens.com

ARIES You will attend the 12th Annual Singer-Songwriter Cape May. You will be so inspired, you will quit your job to pursue a singing career. TAURUS You will figure out how to work the remotes of your Smart TV. Just kidding, it will still take you seven minutes to find the evening news. GEMINI You will return your shopping cart to the designated return area in Washington Commons instead of leaving it to roll around the middle of the parking lot. You will have good karma the rest of the week. CANCER You will take two cookies from the tray at your bank. You will do it quickly so no one catches you, even though it’s not technically against the rules. LEO You will hold the door for 14 people at Wawa this week. You will contemplate why everyone is so eager to hold the door for everyone else at Wawa. VIRGO You will play a game of Clue. It will be Colonel Mustard in the library with the candlestick. LIBRA You will wonder how long you can drive around on empty after the gas light comes on in your car. You will consider seeing how far you can push it, but you will decide this makes you a bad adult. SCORPIO You will buy a new hoodie from the Exit Zero store. You will marvel at how soft it feels against your skin. SAGITTARIUS You will remember to water your houseplants. They will die anyway. CAPRICORN You will remember that time Britney Spears danced with a python at the 2001 video music awards. You will wonder where the snake is now, but you will forget to Google it. AQUARIUS You will have a stimulating conversation over drinks at the Ebbitt Room bar about how to avoid news fatigue in an era of over-politicization. You will decide a few blood orange martinis are key to solving all the world’s problems. PISCES You will Marie Kondo your closet. But you won’t part with that neon windbreaker from 1992 because they’re coming back, dammit!

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

T

his week, some flicks were released to DVD. Green Book and SpiderMan: Into the Spider-Verse were two reviewed already here. Here are a couple that were not and didn’t totally disappoint. You know what I mean. When you’re watching something at home your standards are lower, right? You drop your guard a little. When you’re in the theater, your attention is committed to the screen — and you have a heightened sense of expectation. It’s in this vein that I present a few films for your consideration, released in theaters last year. Widows is a action thriller about three women whose husbands (unbeknownst to them) were involved in illegal operations that ultimately spelled their demise, thus the name of the movie. The storyline is very simple: the bad guys are after the widows, and the grieving women have a chance to commit one final heist to grab the money that could ultimately save their lives. Although it may seem a dark premise,

your eyes! Remember what I said about letting your guard down while watching movies at home. This film was not as bad as you may have heard. In this world of nastiness, it’s good to see a movie where you can just be entertained. And if you can do that in jammies at home... well, all the better! Emily Blunt delivers as the iconic nanny. Lin-Manuel Miranda comes through as well. If you hate all things Disney, then sit this one out... ya hater. If you want mindless fun, have at it. Lastly, I heard from one of our good readers about my lukewarm review of the Oscar winner Roma. Richard Sexton writes: “Agree completely with your review of Roma in Exit Zero. Kept hearing how great it was, but it did not live up to the hype. The cinematography was beautiful, the story had potential, but somehow the whole was less than the sum of the parts. As you said, it was sluggish.” Richard recommend the Oscarnominated Polish film Cold War, which I’ll watch and review next week. It’s also now streaming.

the film works. It is like Ocean’s Eleven — the best and original remake from 2001, not the insufferable train wreck installments that came after. As you can imagine, there are twists and turns (and not all of them unpredictable). The cast is outstanding and happy to say not wasted — if you don’t like Viola Davis, you’re gonna have to write me and tell me why. I dare you. She is one of the most impressive actors to watch on screen today. The other movie? Don’t roll your eyes… it’s Mary Poppins Returns. Hey, stop rolling

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I went to a dinner party a couple of weeks ago where everyone but us were Trump fans. We sat politely and did not express our views and afterwards we both felt hypocritical and cowardly that we did not stand up for our beliefs. Most of our friends are Republicans and we have navigated those waters pretty well over the years, but lately it seems harder and harder. Did we do the right thing? — Polite to a Fault? Dear Polite; The Answer Lady tries to stick to the tried and true adage of never discussing religion or politics in public. However, when likeminded people get together, it is inevitable in this day and age. As you point out, these are treacherous waters. So, you must decide. Do you want to keep these people in your circle?

Wise answers to perplexing questions

If so, and you feel compelled to acknowledge that you have a different slant, you can make your case civilly and respectfully and at the end of it underscore the fact that you both feel it is necessary for people to cross party lines socially and not always hang with folk who think as you do. Thank them for that opportunity and then move on. A nice bottle of Chablis or a Cabernet as a hostess gift will also go a long way to keep things friendly. Sunset Liquors, Collier’s or Joe Canal’s can help you there.

Dear Answer Lady The senior prom is coming up and my mother and I are arguing constantly about what I am wearing. She is too oldfashioned. She says I am too risqué. Well — she has another word for it, but you get my drift. I work very hard and I am paying for everything and think I should be able to choose my own gown. — Prom Diva Dear Diva Why don’t you and your mother try another word — compromise? There is a gown somewhere between a burqa and exotic dance attire. Sit down with the thought in mind that you and your mother will find something that is both sensuous and appropriate. Such a thing does exist. A plunging back; a long slit up the side revealing the leg... both give any prom diva a look of sensuality and glamor. Isn’t that the goal? To deliver a knock-out punch when you open the door and your prom mate sees you? Stop in at Victorious for accessories. Finding something special — a necklace, a scarf, an evening bag — might even inspire the actual gown choice.

Bird Droppings

M

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

onday, March 25, was warm, windless and partly cloudy, an unlikely juxtaposition of elements for the second Monday Morning Meadows bird walk. Usually. In March, Ma Nature serves up windy and rainy to go with a chill in the air. But the seven patrons and five leaders had lovely weather to go with our two-hour walk and 40 bird species — a fine mix of winter residents like Gadwall, American Wigeon and assorted other puddle and diving ducks. Best in show was the plump, cherub-like Field Sparrow keyed up for scope views as it sang. On the beach, we were treated to half a dozen American Oystercatcher engaged in a game of territotial dibs. Two birds were saying: “Look guys we worked this out last year. This section of beach is ours. Yours is somewhere else.” To which the rival pairs replied: “That was last year. This year is up for grabs.” The outcome is to be determined but, come May, a worthy pair of Oystercatchers will care for young on this stretch of beach. Offshore, strings of Northern Gannet

were heading out of the bay. Overhead, an Osprey patrolled. Recently returned from winter quarters in the Amazon Basin, the bird with a gift of fresh Menhaden locked in his talons was eying the horizon, anxious for the arrival of his mate of two seasons. The fish made it clear there was no Bald Eagle in the neighborhood, today. Osprey lose about every other fish they catch to our resident Bald Eagles.

On the other hand, today was an exceptional day for Mr Mink. This is the day he became breakfast for a second year Redtailed Hawk. Near the end of the walk, one of our patrons drew our eyes to the perched bird twenty feet up in a sapling. It was evident the bird had prey. Some seeing the bushy tail concluded squirrel. Others noting the dark fur said muskrat. As we approached, it became evident that the prey had pale nails. Now there is one species of local mammal that is dark brown, has a bushy tail and pale nails. That is mink. They are fairly nocturnal, so not frequently seen, but not uncommon in South Jersey marshes. While a Red-tailed Hawk with prey at 30 would have capped off a great morning walk, Ma Nature had one more enchantment to offer, a flight of seven migrating Great Blue Herons that did a fly by. So that was today’s bounty. Thirty species. Next Monday? I dunno. That’s why I’ll be at the Nature Conservancy Parking lot on Sunset at 7:30, to find out. You are welcome to join us.

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

THEA is a young adult- about 1.5 yrs old. She came to the shelter because her owners could not care for her. Thea happily runs around the yard chasing balls. She is very affectionate once she gets to know you. When she would like a treat, she sits very prettily and offers her paw to shake. Thea enjoys long walks and would make a great companion!

SAPHIRE & SASSY are a bonded mother/ daughter pair who provide “double the fun Their owner purchased Sassy from a breeder and had her for the 8 years of her life. Saphire and Sassy lived with another Sharpei; unfortunately the owner was unable to keep three dogs so this pair is at the shelter waiting for another chance at life.

DORA is the sweetest and most affectionate little 12 year old Jack Russel mix breed pup. She lived with the same family for ten years before they decided she was too much work to keep. Dora is housetrained, well mannered in the home, loving and very playful. If you can open your heart and home to a senior pet... Dora is your golden girl!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

LUCKY is a young male looking for a companion who needs to be ok with sensitive souls. Lucky enjoys quick bouts of running from one spot to the next. He also enjoys confined spaces under things. But Lucky hates scary movies and games, like most kitties. So if you’re feeling lucky today, stop by the shelter and adopt your winning ticket!

MISTLETOE may be named Miss Mistletoe but there is nothing short of cat-titude when it comes to her. She’s a kitty that knows her mind and has no problem giving you a piece of it. Mistletoe has been blessed with both beauty and brains. So if you think you can have what it takes to love a kitty of her awesomeness, come and adopt Mistletoe today!

BUBBA would love a great retirement home where he can relax, purr, love, eat, sleep and keep you company. Bubba doesn’t have a mean bone in his body so making him great with visitors and grand kids. He is in very good health for an older guy and is very clean. Bubba also doesn’t eat too much so he won’t cost you too much either! Adopt!
