Singer-Songwriter Is Music To Our Ears The 12th annual Singer-Songwriter Cape May featured two afternoons of business panels, workshops, clinics, demo-listening sessions and musical keynotes at Congress Hall. In other words: This was a massive learning and networking opportunity for 150 musicians. For Cape May locals and visitors, it was also a massively cool feast for the ears — these musicians played 15 venues throughout town over the weekend. ‘Twas a rollicking kickoff to spring on the Cape!

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

The Atlantic wolffish — aka the seawolf — can grow up to five feet and weigh 40 pounds. It’s named for its fang-like teeth that it uses to eat spiny sea urchins, crabs and other hard-shelled things. The coolest thing about it? The wolffish produces a natural antifreeze, which allows it to endure extremely cold water. Sadly, because of overfishing, wolffish numbers have seriously declined in recent years.

You may know Congress Hall as the place Tina Fey and Oprah have enjoyed breakfast, and Anne Hathaway has enjoyed cocktails, but it’s also the oldest seaside hotel in America. Built in 1816 by Thomas Hughes, it was so big locals thought it unviable, and they called it Tommy’s Folly. Twelve years later, the building was renamed Congress Hall because of Hughes’s election to Congress. Since then, four presidents have stayed here, including Benjamin Harrison who turned the building into his Summer White House. The hotel, which burned down twice, is now a hub of community events centered on simple American pleasures.

Daisy Jones & the Six Taylor Jenkins Reid Set in the late 70s and inspired by Fleetwood Mac, this novel tells the story of a fictional, wildly successful band that splits on the final night of its tour. It’s great for fans of music and also just great storytelling.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Lucky Bones. Now with tasty additional parking! The host: We were seated by none other than Lucky Bones owner, David Craig. He showed us to a corner close to the fireplace. The vibe: Casual. Friendly. Nautical, but not in a gimmicky way. The trivia: The Delaware Bayshore is ground zero for horseshoecrab mating in the late spring. These gentle creatures, which are older than the dinosaurs, have a hook-like claw that was considered by early whalers on the Cape a good luck charm: the lucky bone! The run-in: We saw the inimitable and charming Bob Epaldo, who is looking particularly studly. He’s lost 35 pounds via walking and mindful eating. “Two healthy meals per day, one unhealthy,” he explained. Jack responded that this is similar to his own eating plan: “Two healthy meals per day, three unhealthy.” The starter: Cowboy chili for Jack. Or, as David Craig put it when he handed over the dish: “Cowboy chili for a cowboy.” Flattery will get you everywhere, you saucy boy. The good news: The best-selling Lucky Bones cookbook is now reduced in price from $19.95 to $12.95! (This is good news for everyone but Diane, who wrote it.) The mains: We had the quinoa and kale salad with toasted pecans, cranberries, goat cheese and Asian pears. There was a perfectly cooked piece of grilled salmon on there as well. We also ordered the special: chicken and waffles with country sausage gravy, maple syrup and toasted pecans. It made us proud to be southern! (We’re not actually southern, but this dish makes us like to pretend.) The on-deck meal: We’re looking at you, four cheese mac & cheese with buttery panko breadcrumbs. We’ll be back. The conversation: We discussed the woman with two uteri (that’s the plural of “uterus;” we Googled it) who gave birth to a baby one month after giving birth to a baby. That’s either amazing or horrifying, depending on one’s diaper budget. We also discussed the comedian who won Ukraine’s first round of elections. The takeaway: True life is stranger than fiction. It’s also tastier with Lucky Bones.

The Exit Zero Filling Station Ambush Come get gas at our place and you might just get lucky!

It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places — from $3 off fudge to $15 off dinner. It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into Taylor and Tom Seal, from Asbury Park, who were in town for a day trip. We asked them to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. They picked out a $10 discount at Red Oak Trading. Who would they like to share this with? Taylor’s father, Bob Norton.

I

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

write to you this week bleary-eyed and exhausted, yet happily bleary-eyed and exhausted, fresh from my annual mecca to Northampton, MA where I became an official member of the house band at their 13th Annual Beatles Open Mic night. They paid me money and everything! Bright and early Saturday morning I zipped up to West Orange, NJ (151.7 miles) to pick up my brother Mike, and we winged in up to NoHo (186.3 miles) to the luxurious Fairfield Inn, with enough time to jump in the shower before the show. (Note to Self: next year, pack toothpaste. The complimentary Fairfield Inn envelopes of toothpaste-type substance were less than satisfying.) I won’t make the whole column about a small town in Massachusetts that none of you care about (okay, maybe one of you cares about it), but the show ran the gamut from seasoned professionals to those making their stage debuts (with a couple people falling OFF the stage. I was not among them, which I count as a win.). And yes, THIS is the idea I totally stole in 2012 that became the Love Me

Dudes you know and love today. (Who will, coincidentally, be returning to their open mic roots at Carney’s on Memorial Day Monday, which you should all come to and sing at, but more on that later in the season.) My new-to-me Toyota Highlander made the trip like a boss, averaging a tick over 25mpg, and it was really nice to drive a car in which I could set the cruise control at 72 and not worry about it blowing up. Maybe next year we take a caravan (oof, too soon…) from Cape May and take over the show. Who’s with me?

This Week from the Dept. of It Never F*cking Ends: As you may have read last week, our 2008 Dodge Caravan broke down and was going to cost too much to fix, so we quickly acquired the aforementioned 2013 Highlander, which closely resembles a tank and handles like a Porsche. That was Friday. The following Thursday morning, my sons Owen (17) and Jackson (16) left for school in the 2002 Ford Focus I was bequeathed by my mother shortly before she passed away (listen, I know a 2002 Ford Focus with 100,000 miles on it isn’t every 40-something-year-old guy’s idea of a cool car, but when your dying mother says “Please take my car” you take the damn car) which they promptly crashed, bringing a furious end to the era of The Ivory Blur. Both kids are fine (if they weren’t, don’t you think I might have led with that?), but the Focus is no more, putting us in the market for a second new car in the span of six days. My wife, Cathrine, did an admirable job of keeping it almost together upon receiving the call no mother wants to get. The boys were, unsurprisingly, shaken, and we took

them up to CMRC for a onceover (where I put $2 in the Pepsi machine and did not get my Pepsi because life is a cosmic joke and we are this month’s punchline) and they were given a clean bill of health. Luckily, nothing more than a very dramatic life lesson. (Anyone who has driven into the early morning glare of Breakwater Road can sympathize with Owen.) Then, on Saturday, Jackson broke his ankle. (I’ll be spending the rest of this week under my blankie.) We rented a car from Enterprise to get us through the weekend and, I gotta tell you, the 2019 Nissan Rogue? Pretty badass. Now less harrowing stuff... A local radio station that shall remain nameless instantly won my heart by playing “Tempted” by Squeeze (the most criminally underrated of all criminally underrated bands), and immediately lost it by following with “You Give Love a Bad Name” by Bon Jovi (the most criminal band ever foisted upon an unsuspecting public). The sudden change in the quality of music almost gave me whiplash. (Yeah, maybe stay away from car accident jokes for a week…) For the first, and last, time in their school careers (Owen graduates in June), all three of my boys performed on the same stage at the inter-scholastic concert at LCMR. It was a very nice moment for their mother and me and no I wasn’t crying it was just really dusty in there, okay? Each school performed a short set and finished by joining forces on Toto’s “Africa.” They were all great, but the runaway star of the show was sixth grader Bella McKeown. Holy moley. Big things, small packages and all that. I am consistently blown away by the talent in the kids around here (and jealous they have parents that support their dreams, but this is not the time and I should talk to somebody…) At this concert I also rescinded my praise of Aaron Agostini (who stole the show in Curtains) for not being suit-

April 4, 2019 ably impressed by my fawning review. Perhaps this will teach him not to be overly impressed by the words of a regional columnist with 73 loyal readers. In the midst of these tough last couple of weeks, I got a very nice phone call from Karen Mirable, my accountant at Cape Bookkeeping. Nothing against Karen. She’s wonderful. But when your best news is coming from your accountant, something is very wrong. Apology of the Week: To Cape May Brewing Company founder Ryan Krill and family who came in for a late lunch at Exit Zero Filling Station and instead were pitched a business idea by their waiter. Very untoward. Mea culpa. (But we should talk about that idea, it would be a TRIBUTE to your forward thinking…) Speaking of tributes (my name is Terry and I’m a segue-holic), THIS SATURDAY APRIL THE SIXTH my Billy Joel band, The Strangers, is going to rip it up at Cabanas, starting at 8pm for the 3rd Annual Billy Joel Night, Cape May Part 1 (Second show is Saturday, May 4). I know many of you have been to my Beatles shows, which is lovely and amazing, but I daresay you will have as much if not more fun at a Joel show and find yourself saying at least twice during the night, “I forgot how many damn hits Billy Joel had!” (Pro Tip: It’s a lot of hits, and we play just about all of them.) I love, love, love the Beatles shows and sing my heart out at every single one, but I’m just a little bit more connected to the Billy Joel stuff as it’s a little more of my era. I had been a tangential fan most of my childhood, but when my friend Chris Pusey (Pew-zee, perverts) played “Goodnight Saigon” to accompany his report on the Vietnam War in 8th grade, something just opened up and I became a (super-annoying) fan for life. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow or have a heart attack-ack-ack-ack-ackack.

The Old Fogey

W

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

hat in the name of all the gods is a sheepadoodle? I was out for my morning constitutional the other day with Young Albert and we were busy doing star jumps (part of the daily routine that maintain our status as human and canine demi-gods) when a Stranger (anyone from across the canal plus people who have lived here for less than 50 years) stopped us, with the ludicrous aim of “introducing” our dogs to one another. Albert, being a Yorkie, is not for introductions so much as he is for chasing down and savaging other animals (and weaker humans) but we do live in the 20th century, or some such, and I know that times change. So I looked around, not sparing more than a glance for what I assumed was a mop that the woman had recently used to lean a large dirty floor, and politely (if icily) asked: “And where, Madam, would your dog be? I ask because I am at star jump 299 of 300 and once complete, we must strip to our shorts and sprint to the fort on the beach.” I did not add that Albert only performs 100 star jumps, on account of having all four

paws on the ground, and being liable to be blown across the street in the breeze at the height of his leap. “This is Aldous!” she brayed, and damn me if the mop didn’t spring to its feet and slobber all over me. For it was not actually a mop, and was in fact a canine only marginally less intelligent that a mop. “Madam, I cannot tell one end from the other!” I announced, as I tried to restrain Albert, who takes a dim view of slobber. “Hold your llama back, or I fear it will be injured!”

Find Your Way Back...

To my surprise, she laughed, and shouted: “Aldous is a sheepadoodle!” as if that in some was as an explanation. To make matters worse, she then asked, “And your little darling, is he a yorkadoodle?” Well, I confess I have heard of Yankee Doodle Dandy, because the legendary Jimmy Cagney visited Cape May while rehearsing for the movie. I remember because I was home after capturing the Nazis’ rocket-powered plane prototype, which I landed in Cape May. Albert was looking at Aldous askance, clearly bamboozled by this tomfoolery, and while he was deciding whether to attack or hide (two of his three default actions) the lady explained in more detail than needed, that the current trend is to mate a poodle with virtually anything that passes, and then sell that off as a new and non-shedding breed. Truly, this is a remarkable time to be alive. Well, I had a brief thought, as I learned about the existence of labradoodles, golden doodles, weinerdoodles and suchlike, then gave a set of instructions that if followed would have led to the existence of the shoebiedoodle.

Does the rapid news cycle — daily, or even twice-daily newspapers replaced weeklies — deprive us of a chance to stop and think? Must everything be analyzed and classified? Long before Ian Malcolm observed it in Jurassic Park, people wondered whether “scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” Annie Jump Cannon epitomized the problematic scientist of the day. Cannon developed a system for classifying the stars in the sky, dividing them by Balmer absorption lines into O,B, A, F, G, K and M, which she suggested students remember as “Oh, be a fine girl, kiss me.” Over a 40-year career at Harvard, she personally discovered over 300 stars. Not only was Cannon investigat-

ing the heavens with alarming accuracy — is there truly nothing sacred? — but she was a woman in the sciences, she was unmarried, and she was deaf. Though she was far from a mad scientist, Cannon defied categorization in an era that loved its labels; therefore, she made people question their comfortable assumptions. How do we trust a person who defies expectations? Who polices the boundary pusher? If we can’t judge a brilliant astronomer by looking, can we judge a criminal? If humans evolved, as Charles Darwin theorized, could we devolve? Fic-

tion of the era played with this discomfort. In Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, the evil man remains young and handsome — only his picture ages. Dr Jekyll tested the limits of science and produced Mr Hyde, according to Robert Louis Stevenson; and he takes the serum even after he knows the danger. What if Jekyll didn’t create something, but rather unleashed it? What if Hyde lurks inside all of us? Writers like Dickens were scary enough as they showed the ugliness of ordinary people. With this new style of story, Mary Shelley, Jane Webb Loudon, Jules Verne and HG Wells gave voice to fears that were out of this world. Learn more about science fiction at the Lunch and Learn lecture at Lucky Bones on Saturday, April 13 at 11:30am. Presenter Melissa Palmer will speak on Victorian Fathers of Science Fiction and Horror. The $20 cost of admission includes the Lucky Bones’ lunch buffet. Beverages may be purchased separately. Reservations are required. Visit capemaymac.org or call 609-884-5404 for more information.

The Quicky Horoscopes Your near future in two sentences by Lady Diane

OPEN YEAR ROUND

Washington Common, Cape May 609-884-8643 l lynnardens.com

ARIES You will get a bad haircut. Not coincidentally, you will buy a fine hat from the Kaleidoscope shop on the mall. TAURUS You will see a seal sunning itself on Broadway beach. You will remember the words of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center and stay 150 feet away or else that seal will steal your selfie stick and impale you. GEMINI You will buy Easter candy for your kids. You will eat it all after they go to bed. CANCER You will cancel plans in order to stay in and watch the next episode of American Idol despite protestations from your significant other. (They won’t admit it, but they secretly think Katy Perry is adorable, too.) LEO You will attend the Birds in Flight workshop hosted by Cape May Bird Observatory on April 6. You will learn how exciting northbound spring migrants can be. VIRGO You will attempt to teach your father how to use emojis. You will have an awkward time explaining which emoji combinations might inadvertantly symbolize sexual acts. LIBRA You will attempt intermittent fasting. You will be derailed by the chicken-and-waffles at Lucky Bones. SCORPIO You will also attempt intermittent fasting. You will be derailed by the Rudy Dog at Exit Zero Filling Station. SAGITTARIUS You will start mapping out your itinerary for jazz fest. You will pretend you are not too much of a troglodyte to appreciate jazz. CAPRICORN You will set out to do some lap swimming at the Cape May City Elementary School pool. Instead, you will tread water, play Marco Polo and pretend to be a merperson. AQUARIUS You will worry that the nail technicians administering your pedicure are judging your feet. They are. PISCES You will begin stock-piling newspapers for the first crab-picking event of the season. It’s nearly time.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

T

his week’s column is inspired by a suggestion from Richard Sexton, one of our readers. Cold War is a complicated love story from Polish filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski, who received his first Oscar nomination for directing this past year. He has one more than 60 awards in decades of filmmaking, but he truly has come to prominence in the 2000s. Cold War was also nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Language Film. Ironically, all three categories were the same in which Roma won its Oscars. For me, the two ran a very close race in all three achievements — but Cold War won for more compelling storytelling and dialogue. And if there was an award for “most ingenious use of subtlety in capturing your attention,” it would have been this film. A stare that turns into a gaze, a shadow that falls just so... this is subtlety that may get lost on some audiences. When it’s done right, you can’t help notice it. When it’s done to near perfection, you feel it. In Roma, this

original series Hanna (Cold War also came from Amazon Studios). Wiktor is played by Tomasz Kot. The two have a chemistry that carries you through right to the very last scene. Magnificent performances. The cinematography in this film is bold and yet slight at the same time. Nearly each intro shot to a new scene is a masterpiece painting. And the dialogue was gripping as well with no throw away lines and good use of silence on film as well as brilliant words. The direction in this film is deliberate without being fixed. The artistic value is intentional without being sluggish. This film is currently streaming on (you guessed it) Amazon Prime... where I only WISH I could get a kickback for all this praise! Richard, thank you for suggesting this film! To the rest of you reading this column and finding yourself talking back (either with kindness or cursing) write me at tomhsims@ aol.com. Suggest a movie to review. Who knows? I might just review it here! Next week we look at the upcoming 19th Cape May Film Festival! Mark your calendars: April 27.

was done well. Pawlikowski nailed it. His story was more engaging as well. Lovers who live in post-World War ll Poland. Wiktor dreams of escape, Zula is plagued by the uncertainty of the unknown. Can your soulmate torture you that much? Well, it may not be mundane but it makes for intriguing narrative. Our two lead actors (lovers) are no newcomers but primarily known for their work in Polish film. Zula is played by Joanna Kulig. She appears recently in the Amazon

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My uncle died suddenly and the memorial service is next week. He is my father’s sister’s ex-husband and, although I grew up being close to him, my mother has been divorced from my father for nearly 20 years. She is insisting on going to the service, but my father’s family revile her because of the custody fight over me. My uncle’s family barely remember who she is — she was only married to my father for four years. She will not listen to reason and, to top it all off, will most definitely come an hour late. What will I do? — Color Me Red Dear Red Sometimes there is nothing you can do but sit back and try to enjoy the show. The Answer Lady understands how embarrassing it will be for you but know

Wise answers to perplexing questions

this – MOST people are very polite and will go along with it. Will they talk about her later? Yup. But then she probably expects and relishes that, because who else would willingly walk into the hornet’s nest? One thing you can do is make sure you sit with your father. That should be easy since she will be late. You need to go to Accents on Beauty and get yourself the whole beauty treatment to prepare you for the day. One needs to look one’s best when trouble is brewing.

Dear Answer Lady There’s a girl in my class that I really like and would to ask her out, but not anything that is too date-like? I’m not even sure she likes me, but I think maybe she does. Mostly, I’ve played this out in my mind. I can’t quite get it together to make anything a reality. Tell me what to do, Answer Lady. — Indecisive Guy Dear Indecisive Not too indecisive though, since you have made up your mind you want to ask her out. The Answer Lady’s first suggestion is that you need to establish a rapport first. Try to speak to her every day about everyday things. That paves the way for two things — your invitation will not come out of the blue and you will get a sense of whether or not the invitation is welcomed. The worst that comes out of it is a friendship. Where it goes from there is the journey we all embark on when we decide to take a risk. You are wise to keep the “date” low key. Why not a trip to the Cape May County Park Zoo? It’s fun and won’t break your piggy bank.

BUBBA would love a great retirement home where he can relax, purr, love, eat, sleep and keep you company. Bubba doesn’t have a mean bone in his body so making him great with visitors and grand kids. He is in very good health for an older guy and is very clean. Bubba also doesn’t eat too much so he won’t cost you too much either! Adopt!

MUFFY knows he is not really a Scottish Fold, but his ears are permanently folded. It might have been from bad ears his whole life, but Muffy still has that cute effect doesn’t he? And the best part is that he is one lovey cat. So if you don’t fall for his “pedigree,” he can melt you with his heart! Because nothing will keep you warmer than this Muffy’s love!

LILY, like a flower, she needs a lot of special attention. A soft touch is what this delicate girl is looking for. Some sun to thrive in and some blankets to wrap in. A quiet atmosphere that will allow her to bloom into the beautiful flower that she is. Nothing stressful. Just calm and peace for little Lily girl. Could this be you? Adopt today!
