You weren’t imagining it — there WERE a lot of hippies in Cape May on July 13. This was the date of the Corinthian Yacht Club’s MidSummer Party, themed around the 50th anniversary of Woodstock. The event was co-hosted by Karen and Yogi Kurtz and Donna and Gary Padussis, and bell-bottomed attendees enjoyed hamburgers, hot dogs and grilled chicken barbecue at tie-dyed tables between dancing to music from Robert Moffett and Love Affair. It was a night of peace, fun and enough flower power to last all summer. Above: Charlotte, Carol, Jess, Karen, Nancy, Anthony. Left: Ed, Barb, Steve, Paula, Michele, Paul. More photographs inside and in next week’s issue!

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS
Weird Sea Creature
Did You Know?
What We’re Reading
The megamouth shark is known for, yes, its ginormous mouth. It cruises around the sea with this gaping maw open in order to catch its prey, shrimp-like animals called krill. (The creature is one of only three sharks to feed this way.) There have only been 56 confirmed sightings of the megamouth. Found in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans, this guy can grow to 17 feet. Due to a flabby body, it’s not a very good swimmer. (Relatable.)
The Cape May Maritime Museum is in the process of restoring a US Coast Guard motorboat that was once stationed in Ocean City. A lifesaving vessel, it represents the final wooden fleet the Coast Guard ever made, and it is one of only a few in its class remaining. Noteworthy, this is the same kind of boat used in the Coast Guard’s most famous and daring rescue, depicted in the movie The Finest Hours, starring Chris Pine and streaming on Netflix. For more information on the project, email Tarrant. jerry@gmail.com to check out the boat, or keep your eyes peeled for an in-depth article in Exit Zero’s next color issue.
Less By Andrew Sean Greer This hilarious, Pulitzer Prizewinning novel tells the story of a struggling novelist who travels the world to avoid a wedding.

Here’s what the EZ team had for lunch this week
E
very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Nick Filet on the beachfront. It just opened, after much anticipation — at the site of the old Exit Zero beach store. My, what a difference a renovation makes. We couldn’t recognize the space. The vibe: Fast and casual. Kid and beach-goer friendly. Eat-in or takeout. The occasion: It was, uh… Thursday afternoon. (Don’t judge us.) The seating: We took our meal across the street to a breezy bench on the promenade with a view of the ocean (and also a view of our car because we didn’t have enough quarters to pay the meter, so we were on strict meter maid-watching duty… womp, womp). The food: A lobster and filet grilled cheese. It tasted like nostalgia with a classy twist — tender meat and succulent lobster. (Yes, we COULD have ordered a lobster and filet salad instead, but you only live once and we will not be shamed.) We also enjoyed a lobster roll, which was chock-full of the good stuff. It was buttery without being too buttery. Savory without being heavy. Oh, and the fries! We added a helping of the delightful parmesan truffle option, and they tasted like summer. But we’ll be back for the Old Bay fries in a jiffy, too. The conversation: We talked about Megan Rapinoe and how the photo of her joyful moment in the recent US Women’s World Cup, arms extended, has gone totally viral. Turns out, EZ head honcho Jack Wright had a role to play in another viral, soccer-related moment. In 1999, when Brandi Chastain ripped off her top after her winning kick against the Chinese to secure the US Women’s second World Cup victory, it was done as a nod to a magazine cover for which she’d just posed nude (save for some strategically placed soccer balls). The mag? Gear. Its executive editor and the guy who came up for the idea for the shoot? Jack. The takeaway: Nick Filet is so good, you may be inspired to rip off your shirt. Or maybe not.

Bartender Of The Week This week, Dom Piro from E.M. Hemingway’s at the Grand Hotel and Rusty Nail is up. How long have you been bartending? 21 years. Favorite drink to make? Draft beer. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When five customers order five different drinks and pay with five different credit cards. Dream job? To be a drummer in a reggae band.
The Signature Dish Place: The Rusty Nail Chef: Jimmy Burton Signature dish: The Mac Attack! It’s a new addition to the Rusty Nail menu this year. It comes topped with either barbecue pulled pork or buffalo chicken. Our mac and cheese is currently our signature dish. This year, we decided to take that dish and elevate it to a new level of deliciousness.
Beer Of The Week Cape May Brewing Co The “Z” is Silent Flanders-style Red Ale ABV: 8.1% Fruity up-front while reminiscent of the red wine barrel’s past life, the brew has aged for over 42 months in the barrel to fully develop its flavor profile. It has an upfront, harmonious blend of malt and acidity, with a touch of funk and a tannic quality tying things together.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
he wife and I popped into Harpoon’s on the Bay the other night for our annual Act Like a Tourist night. I had a Moscow Mule, she had a Mermaid Water that she didn’t know came in a bucket and spent the rest of the night being embarrassed that her drink came in a bucket. I did the only thing a good husband could do; ordered her a glass of wine and drank the bucket. Please, no applause. Any good husband would do the same. Gregg Carpenter was on stage playing a nice mix of standards and obscurities, the grilled wings were excellent and remain my favorite in the Cape May area, and the wasabi shrimp were pretty great, too. Cath and I couldn’t get over the Cucumber Noodles being noodles made of cucumber. Genius! Newly minted 65-year-old Jack Wright and his child bride, Diane Stopyra, were at Mayer’s Tavern while I was setting up for my gig Thursday. I sang “Just the Way You Are” at Diane’s request and they dashed right out of there. Wow. I guess my smooth, sexy vocals really put them in the mood. (NARRATOR:
Diane had an upset stomach. Terry did NOT put them in the mood and now they may never be in the mood again just thinking about it.) I’m growing my beard back, dammit! I don’t care if the only dark patch left is over my lip and makes me look like Bald Hitler. I simply cannot continue to walk around with this much face. But I warn you; I think I’m going to grow a hipster beard, with beads and bird nests and shit. Days Without Smoking: 1. I’ve been remiss in not mentioning that a movie I worked on in the winter of 2018 has
been making the festival rounds and has been very well received, winning lots of independent film awards. Exit 0 (unrelated) is a psychological thriller written and directed by South Jersey native E.B. Hughes and starring Augie Duke (Chasing Bullitt) and Gabe Fazio (A Star is Born). The movie also features a lot of local actors as background talent and in small roles, including Lindsey Axelsson as a waitress, Kevin Ebner as a doomed husband, and, well, me, as Man #2, the part that holds the production together. No word on when it may get a wider release, but I’ll let you know. In the meantime I’ll be polishing my Oscar speech. It’s Thing-On-My-Leg season. And the thing on my leg has a thing on its leg. My new delivery partner, Henry O’Brien, has been doing a pretty good job. More importantly, I now have someone who will finally believe all the crazy stuff I see in the wee hours and hidden corners of Cape May. Such as The Rabbits of the Point: They move in packs of 10-12, in conspiratorial huddles, dispersing only when bathed in headlights and not until you are five feet away. It’s creepy.

FOOD & DRINK
I’m starting to think Watership Down was a documentary. The Midnight Possums: Every quarter-mile one of these delightful creatures darts from the bushes to make you slam your brakes and swerve. Are they just following their animal instinct? Or are they only hoping you stop long enough for their 50 possum buddies to steal your hubcaps? The Bayshore Stroller: There is no time of day, morning, noon or night, that you will not find a man or woman walking the length of Bayshore Road, from Villas to North Cape May. What do they seek? Are they on a quest? Or are they the shimmering ghosts of generations past looking to right the wrongs of… nope, never mind, that guy just snot rocketed into the bus stop. The Villas Wawa: You will never find a more wretched hive of villainy. The nightmare delivery scenario came to fruition last week — thick summer traffic, Ocean Drive under construction, two construction traffic lights, both red both ways, and the drawbridge up, both ways. In other words, I hope Two Mile Landing really appreciated that bundle of Exit Zero that week. They almost wound up in the drink. What kind of guy is Angelo Rotondi? The kind of guy that, within five minutes of my posting on Facebook about fixing or replacing my blown speaker, calls me up with a half-dozen ways to do both. He is the MacGyver of electronics, a Houdini with a paint brush and the Michelangelo of vaping. Sixteen years I’m writing for this rag and my name is still not in the opening credits. My wife starts here six months ago and BOOM! Inside corner, page 4. I’ve encountered quite a few people lately who have gone out of their way to tell me (A) how glad they are that I’m back writing this column and/or (B) that they’ve been reading it for years. Like Steve Ocker, who stopped in to Exit Zero Filling Station for lunch and to tell me what a big fan he was. I got a mild Kathy Bates in Misery vibe, but Steve did not
July 18, 2019 attempt to hobble me. And Terry O’Neil, who brought with him an Exit Zero-esque magazine from Cape Cod he thought I’d enjoy, then proceeded to consume 27 umbrella drinks and dirty dance with his wife while Tim and I played Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler”. Why are my fans always so weird? And male? I’m kidding, of course. Steve and Terry are very nice guys, as are the many others whose names I did not get who have offered a kind word. I know not all of these are home runs, but sometimes a single is all you need to get the run home. Recently ran into local carpenter Mark Heany at Red Brick Ale House. To me, he will always be “guy who fell off my neighbor’s roof in 1995” and “guy who immediately assumes I’m a Limbaugh-Hannity-Trump knuckle-dragger when I post anything even mildly political on Facebook.” We talked it out over beers and agreed that, while we don’t agree on much, we can still be people to each other. I didn’t like Obama very much, but he may have been onto something with that Beer Summit. I really, really wanted to love Yesterday, the new film by Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire) about a guy who wakes up and is the only person in the world who remembers The Beatles, and while I did enjoy a few scenes, overall I was disappointed. I mean, it’s fine. But with a premise that rich I just wanted more. Though there is one scene that instantly brought me to tears. I won’t spoil it, but you’ll know it when you see it. It’s normal to sneeze 17 times in three minutes, right? If you’d like to hear me sing this week, you may do so at the following venues: Saturday, O’Brien & Joyce at Exit Zero Filling Station, 6-10. Sunday, The Terry O’Brien Band at Carney’s, 9-1. Tuesday, Terry O’ke at Carney’s, 9-1 (Contest! Cash Prizes! Booze!). Thursday, O’Brien & Joyce at Mayer’s Tavern, 7-10. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
look forward to the first Bacon Confetti of the summer season almost as much as I adore the first snowdrop, or the earliest Shoebie sighting. All three events make me misty-eyed, though the last one also has me scurrying for my elephant gun. But the annual sight and sound of an entire pig zapped into a million sizzling airborne fragments is one of my favorite things in nature. Well, I say nature: the giant magnifying glass atop the Widow’s Walk on the D’Catur Mansion is useful, too. It was installed in WW2, to harness the power of the sun to bring down Nazi bombers. By chance, it was first used in anger against a U-Boat that surfaced off the Jersey Shore, sinking it, and such was the jubilation that the mayor got quite carried away and decided to look in the front end. Well, there was a high thin shriek, then the fool wafted eastwards in the breeze, in the form of a small cloud of ash. Sadly (for the magnifier, if not for our fine city), the war didn’t reach Cape May, and the only subsequent use was in error, when the Concrete Ship appeared without warning (other than the official one, which Young
Albert had eaten before I could see it), we burned a hole in it and sent it to the bottom. So, after a few decades of flying under the radar to avoid blame, we dusted off the glass when some bright spark was looking for a way to keep up with the demand for bacon at the height of the season. The theory was, bacon takes a few minutes to fry to perfection, costing time and money, and so the first demonstration was planned for dawn on the beach. Well, the idea was that a poor pig would be dispatched in the time-honored Cape May way,
Find Your Way Back...
with a silenced pistol shot to the back of the head while the poor ham is watching Fox and Friends on television, and too pre-occupied complaining about how dumb the presenters are to notice the town assassin (an actual salaried position). Then, a massive pan would be placed on the beach, and 500 rashers fried from afar, in a heartbeat. Well, it was a good plan, and had Young Albert not gotten carried away and barked and jumped at the control lever, we might have had, for once, a smoothly executed plan. Sadly, that dog adores bacon, and so the pig was happily strolling along the sand, wondering what the crowd was for, and expecting maybe a party, when the million-times magnified rays of the sun struck it head on. Well, let me tell you, bacon confetti is rather splendid, and there was not a dog nor a citizen who was not running around barking in delight and snapping at the air. It became a tradition, and is 98 per cent accurate. On those few occasions when we miss the pig and strike a Shoebie, that works also.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the British invasion
onditions were ripe for the British Invasion of the 1960s. On one side of the Atlantic you had a young nation, grieving the assassination of a popular president. On the other, you had a changing empire struggling to regain its footing. One needed cheer, the other only needed love, and soon both were glad all over. The hopeful pep of the Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand” caught the attention of a somber America in January, 1964. Before then, the only British songs to reach number one in the US were instrumentals, for a total of four weeks. In 1964 and 1965, British acts topped the chart for 56 weeks. Anglophilia was Beatlemania and much more, as American teens treated everything English as cooler, more stylish, and more important. For the British performers, the warm reception was a surprise. Musicians who grew up in war-scarred England, where rationing persisted until 1955, thought good things came from America, not the other way around, according to singer Petula Clark. Suddenly, Americans loved anyone and anything
young and British. Bands of young men — the Dave Clark Five, Herman’s Hermits, the Kinks, the Rolling Stones — and solo young women like Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Marianne Faithfull and Lulu found adoration everywhere. The impact spilled over into the movies, as bands from the Beatles to Freddy and the Dreamers made jukebox films, and Eliza Doolittle, Alfie and James Bond ruled the box office. The Saint and The Avengers came to television, and Twiggy dominated fashion in Mary Quant’s designs. American musicians responded in a
variety of ways, including adopting faux accents and mythical English ancestry. Many, like the Beach Boys, welcomed the British beat and blended it with their own style. Elvis Presley reportedly wanted the Beatles banned from America for their antiwar stance. Artists like Jimi Hendrix and Sonny and Cher went to London to stretch their own boundaries. Motown and folk music continued doing their own thing, confident that music had room. The British Invasion slowed by the end of the 1960s, but Brits have never lost their hold on American pop. Revisit The British Invasion Years at Cape May Convention Hall this Friday, July 19 at 8:00pm. Tickets are $42. Call 609884-9565 or visit capemaycity.com for tickets. This show offers music from the British Invasion bands, including a Beatles tribute, along with the American response, with songs from the Turtles, the Monkees, the Beach Boys, and Neil Diamond. If that’s not enough, you can see Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone at Cape May Convention Hall on Wednesday, July 24.

E
Arts correspondent Tom Sims on a compelling new documentary about Nina Simone
xceptional documentaries make you aware of extraordinary historic characters. And this weekend you have a rare chance to get to know one of life’s unsung heroes. Join your film buff friends of the Cape May Film Society this Saturday (July 20) for a special screening of What Happened, Miss Simone? This Emmy Award winning, Oscar-nominated documentary about Nina Simone, aka The High Priestess of Soul includes rare film footage of recordings never heard before. Cape May radio personalities Ed and Marie LaDuca from the Center for Community Arts will spark conversation with fun facts and musical myths. “I’m just a soul whose intentions are good,” so the song goes, “Oh Lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood.” A year before the song “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” became a mega-hit for Eric Burden and the Animals in 1965, it was originally written for and recorded by Simone. You’ll follow her fascinating life story from classical pianist prodigy turned jazz and blues performer...
then turned revolutionary hero for the civil rights movement. She was militant in her fight for social justice while on stage. But she was “Nina Simone 24/7,” her daughter said, adding, “that was the problem.” Playing in Atlantic City and Philadelphia, she started with only the piano because she didn’t want to sing. She began singing because the clubs where she played demanded it. In time, that voice would become so much more important than for just delivering melodies. She began by helping her millions of
fans to become curious about themselves and their history. She’d make them ask, “Who am I? Where do I come from? Do I like me? Why do I like me?” Her multiple albums and countless tours ascended culture and music to identify with the revolutionary idea of identity. Some called her the “patron saint of rebellion.” Back in the 1960s, she told Martin Luther King, Jr, “I am... NOT... non-violent.” Malcolm X’s daughter, Attallah Shabazz said, “She was not at odds with the times, the times were at odds with her.” Her dancing was smooth and quirky. Sometimes her looks were long and piercing (and at times alarming). Her lyrics were passionate if at times inciting. Her closest friends and family say her demons were real, and she struggled with them every day. You could watch this film on your own, but why would you do that when you can react to the film with friend and learn more about this intriguing, captivating, and talented rebel? Visit www.newnjstatefilmfestival.org for details.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I was tipped off about a job that I was not only qualified for but would have been one of only a handful of applicants. I told my best friend because he has a similar skill set, and because I was so excited about the opportunity. To my surprise, I was told two weeks after my interview that my best friend got the job. He already had a job. I did not. This is a lateral move for him. I’m furious and want to punch him in the face. What I want to know, is what would you do going forward? It’s a small town and we are bound to run into each other. We have many of the same friends. Plus, I’m not sure when I’m going to get over the urge to punch him in the face. — Permanently P.O.’d Dear Permanently The Answer Lady understands
Wise answers to perplexing questions
completely the “urge to punch him in the face,” but if you were to do so it would end badly for you. Worse than it already has. It sounds trite but you’ve got to have faith that fate has another plan for you. Ergo, start looking forward not backward. Otherwise, your anger will eat you alive and you’ll be of no good to yourself or anyone else. So, go hit a punching bag at North Beach Gym and while you’re doing so, start working on Plan B. Next time you see your alleged BFF? Nod, ignore and move on.
Dear Answer Lady This sounds petty, but an acquaintance of mine, whom I have had to my house for dinner many times, wants my recipe for chocolate cake. It’s been handed down for generations in my family and has a secret ingredient. The taste and texture are incredibe, I freely admit. I just don’t want to share it with anyone other than my daughters. It doesn’t help that this friend is a terrible cook and the recipe would be wasted. She’s asked me for it several times. What do I tell her? I’ve used all the usual excuses. — Baking Betsy Dear Betsy Here’s a helpful hint — tell her the truth. Tell her it’s a family recipe handed down from mother to daughter going back many generations and it would be a breech of trust to share it. As a consolation prize, go to Cape Atlantic Book Company and order Ina Garten’s Barefoot Contessa at Home cookbook for her. Her Beatty’s Chocolate Cake recipe is to die for. Watch out, though. She may prefer it to your own.

Bird Droppings
I
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
f there is a Creator, I suspect he made American Goldfinch last, a final touch of color and animation to cap off a fine tapestry of life. Smaller than most sparrows, with a conical bill and short notched tail, these seed-eating Acrobates are widespread across North America, breeding as far north as southern Canada and wintering south into Mexico. We in Cape May get to enjoy the birds year-round although in winter, with sunlight colored males, toned down to a greenish brown, many human residents fail to recognize the “wild canaries” as they are widely known at their feeders. But now, at the height of the breeding season American Goldfinch males are in their bright yellow black winged courting cloths and breeding season is NOW. Late nesters, across much of North America the birds raise young in July and August. This late start is timed to coincide with a peak abundance of weed seeds as well as insects whose protein the young need to grow. Both adults choose the nest sites, often
in a low bush or thistle, but it is the female who builds the cup-shaped grass nest, secured to the hosting plant with spider silk and lined with thistle seed fibers. Contoured to fit her body, nests are so tightly constructed that they hold water. In winter, birds continue to forage mostly on seed but can be drawn to your yard year-round by offering thistle seed. Known for their bounding flight and cherry “per-chick-ores” call, it is not sur-
prising that this dolllop of sunlight is the State Bird of three states, including New Jersey. Only Northern Cardinal has more emblematic acclaim. There are two other goldfinch species in North America, Lesser Goldfinch and Lawrence’s, both western species. To find American Goldfinch, try the parking lot of the South Cape May Preserve and the fields of Higbee Beach. Be alert for any bright yellow bird with black trim. Yellow Warblers which occupy much the same habitat, lack the goldfinch’s black wings and jaunty black cap, if you find thistles gone to seed, you’ve found goldfinches. Also to be looked for is male Indigo Bunting, a sparrow-sized and shaped bird the color of a summer sky. If you are new to bird watching, both of these species are easily approached and viewed even without binoculars, but through binoculars, their vibrant color will blow you back to a brain stem. Head over to Cape May Bird Observatory, 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point and get an eyeful.

By war’s end, they had connected over 26 million calls and were recognized by General John J. Pershing. When they returned home, the U.S. government told them they were never soldiers. For 60 years, they fought their own recognition. This documentary features rare, 100-year old footage of these women working hard to help their country. Doors will open at 6:30pm and the lecture will start at approximately 7:00pm.

REDS is a four year old boy with a perpetual smile. Whether he is watching potential adopters walk by his kennel or running in the yard, he is always smiling! Reds lived with a family but when his owner moved, there was no room for this big boy to go with them so he is at the shelter waiting for another family to adopt him. Meet Reds today!
JACK is a 4 year old miniature pincher mix. He lived with a family including children, another dog and cats prior to coming to the shelter. Jack is crate trained. He enjoys playing with toys, taking walks, riding in the car and simply relaxing outside in the sunshine. He is very affectionate but can take time to warm up to strangers. Meet Jack today!

MAXINE is a two year old German shepherd who lived with a family including children before coming to the shelter. It is reported that she was good with everyone in the family, but was not comfortable with outsiders. It is for this reason that Maxine came to the shelter. Maxine will be shown to potential adopters with an approved application and by appointment.

BIANCA is a Siamese and snowshoe mix. She’s also a senior princess who will likely have many eager suitors stopping by the shelter. Her vaccinations are up to date, she’s house-trained like a boss, and now all she needs is a good home with a deserving guardian. Think you’re cool enough to care for this hip cat?
KITTY-KAT has been in the same home for seven years. Unfortunately her owners decided that she could no longer stay. Kitty likes other animals but prefers the company of adults. At her age young ones can be stressful. So if you are looking for an independent kitty that will hang out and still play around, then I she is the perfect kitty for you.
LEVI is a beautiful big male, but don’t let that fool you. He is a working male. Levi’s early years were spent outside surviving the rough and tumble ways of the alley cat. Now Levi would like to spend his days lounging in a warm cozy home. So if you’re looking for a hearty male, then come on by and meet Levi. He deserves all the love in the world!

One of Cape May’s few grand Victorian cottages to have survived as a singlefamily home. It combines the grandeur of the old with the efficiency of the new. High ceilings, original gilt mirrors and large airy rooms overlook an expansive, fully-fenced garden plus off-street parking for four cars. Elegant living and dining rooms were made for entertaining.
