SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

The common spider crab is also called the Atlantic spider crab — or the portly spider crab. The shell is hairy and spiny and protects a body that, claws and all, can be 12 inches across. Though they look scary, spider crabs are gentle creatures, slow moving and harmless to humans. Unlike the crabs we’re most used to enjoying with a Corona and some Old Bay seasoning, these guys can actually walk forward, not just sideways.

Cape May has been named among the top 10 beach towns in America by Coastal Living magazine. “Cape May is separated from the mainland by a narrow canal,” it reads, “yet feels somehow a world apart. Horse-drawn carriages and trolleys add an air of refinement, as does the open-air, pedestrian-only Washington Street Mall where you’ll find antiques stores and art galleries. But it’s the Victorian-era buildings in town that prove the most transporting; walking past the gingerbread confections is like flipping through a storybook that harkens back to the mid-1800s, when Cape May became America’s first seashore resort town.”

The Most Fun We Ever Had By Claire Lombardo This beach read — complete with beautiful writing and fully realized characters — brings you into the drama of a Midwestern family saga.

Cape May historian Don Pocher passed away at the age of 90 last week. Above, he’s pictured in Cape May with his late wife Pat, with whom he authored Cape May in Vintage Postcards. Don, a US Navy veteran, was also an accomplished sailor (below you can see him silhouetted, top center, on the yacht Geronimo in Oyster Bay, New York). Right, he’s pictured with longtime companion Marge Wetherill. Rest in peace, Don... you will be missed by a lot of people.

Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Fishcakes Dockside Grill on Ocean Drive, on the way into Wildwood Crest. CBS Philadelphia’s ‘Taste with Tory’ segment called this place “the end of the rainbow” before you get to Cape May proper and “a small spot with big flavor.” The occasion: Sunday funday. The walls: There aren’t any. This means, should you turn up, you’ll be eating on a breezy, wood patio under a tin roof overlooking the BreeZeeLee Yacht Basin of Cape May harbor. The mood: We were post-beach, hungry for some shade and just plain hungry. We were still feeling sandy, salty and sun-kissed, and we wanted a place that fit our vibe. Fishcakes ticks off two of our favorite “als:” nautical and casual. The server: We spent so much time in the hot sun this day, we forgot to get her name. But she kept the iced tea coming with extra ice and without us even having to ask, so we’ll just call her “our hero.” The food: Delightful fish tacos to start — they’re done with Corona(!)-battered cod, cabbage slaw, mango salsa and avocado cream. We also had the signature lobster roll, which is made on a buttered and grilled brioche bun with lobster salad, for a little something different. (It’s the most popular menu item.) We also went for the weekend-only woodfired chicken, which was succulent in all the right places and nicely seasoned. The conversation: Foodie culture is great and all, but sometimes you just want to sit in a plastic chair with a good view, a cold drink and paper dinnerware. The stop: We had such a lovely late afternoon, we didn’t want it to end, so we stopped at Rita’s Italian Ice on the way home for a sweet treat. Jack, who was born before the invention of dessert, apparently, was first befuddled then paralyzed by the menu, but he finally settled on a gelati with vanilla custard and mango water ice. “So wait — they put them… together?!” he said. Mind = blown. The takeaway: Walls are overrated. Fishcakes is not.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

o let me tell you about my Sunday; Owen and I dipped into Dock Mike’s for breakfast, a good beginning, but have you noticed that Dock Mike’s isn’t on a dock? This bothers me more than it should. It’s like the LED sign outside Planet Pizza in Villas that reads OPEN 7 DAYS above the wooden sign that reads CLOSED MONDAYS. So, I guess it’s open seven days?Just not in a row? And really? Planet Pizza? Was Hut Pizza not available? Or are you hoping that people are going to think, “Gee willikers! Lookee here! It’s that place from Toy Story!” So cynical we are these days. Anyway, Dock Mike’s, which has a very generous breakfast-until-2pm policy, was great. Owen had steak and eggs. Sounds basic. Knocked our socks off. I, on Day One of my two-day weight loss challenge, had an asparagus, mushroom and cheese omelet with a side salad (!) and it was super yummy. After breakfast it’s a little pre-gig R&R. For Owen, this means a couple hours on his Nintendo Switch which he swears is the last gaming system I’ll ever have to buy him

(as was the Wii, the Wii U, the Playstation 4…). For me, it means laying down, watching a few Red Letter Media videos on YouTube (you know, I tried to become a rich and famous YouTuber but none of you watched so THANKS OBAMA) and maybe drift off for a short nap. My naps, like all my sleeps, are short. And sudden. Because I go into apnea about three seconds after dozing and now you know why I always look tired. It’s because I’m always tired. The only two times in my life I can recall sleeping well are 2002, the year I did Atkins

and lost about 40 pounds (promptly put 50 back on) and the stretch earlier this decade when I was on drugs. I mean, prescribed drugs. And if you’re sleeping on Red Letter Media, you have no one to blame but yourself. They did a six-hour critique of The Phantom Menace. The movie is two-and-a-half hours. But Sunday; every other is a double-dip for me, Rusty Nail 4-8 with Tim Joyce (O’Brien & Joyce) and 9-1 at Carney’s (The Terry O’Brien Band). Yes, it’s a long day, a lot of singing, but, hey, I’m not digging ditches here. I consider myself fortunate to make my living with my voice. Sure, sometimes I’m not sure how I’ll run the six-gigs-in-seven-days gauntlet I’m staring at next week. But I could have a real job, and that would suck. To make the Carney’s gig on time, I load my PA in before the Nail; mixer, power amp, etc. So Owen comes with me to help because he’s a good son and I didn’t give him a choice, and we’re carrying speakers down Beach Avenue and SNAP! Something in my upper left rib cage pops and I can’t move or breathe because the pain, the pain of it all. It’s kind of

to the side and toward the back so I’m reasonably sure it wasn’t a heart attack (who knows? Could still be…), so I gingerly direct Owen what to plug in where because I can’t use my body. This lasts less than three minutes before I have to take over because Owen, smart as he is, can be a real idiot (love you, boy). Voila! The things are making sounds! Everything is ready for tonight!. What could possibly go wrong? A lot. Did I mention I was wearing my new Adidas flip-flops, or slides, as the kids call them? Every time I buy new flip-flops I remember why I never buy flipflops. It’s footwear for your feet only if you have no intention of walking. No, yours are not comfortable, you’re brainwashed. Anyway, Sunday; I drop Owen at Exit Zero Filling Station (he really is a good kid, unlike his good-for-nothing brothers) and miraculously get a parking spot at the Nail. I use six things from my truck (a 2013 Toyota Highlander, have I mentioned?); mic stand, iPad stand, small table for drinks, power wheel, tip jar and gig bag (mics, noise makers and such). It took three trips to retrieve these six items because my upper left quadrant is basically paralyzed and OH MY GOD how am I going to get through this day? (The Mrs slipped me one of her Fun Pills at EZFS which took a little edge off, but it still felt like someone slowly twisting a screw into my side.) Listen, I know my writing can sometimes get a little florid and at times I use more analogies than a beach tagger tags beach tags, but it really hurt. Like, a lot. Still does, actually. And stop giving those beach taggers such a hard time! They’re just doing their job. So, Sunday; Tim and I get set-up (we had to carry the speakers one handle each like little girls), I take my first deep breath before the opening verse of “Peaceful, Easy Feeling”, our regular opening song and the regular opening song of 97% of acoustic duos across this great

July 25, 2019 nation of ours, and the pain shoots and the stars pop because taking deep breaths requires the expanding of the rib cage and mine is just fucking broken I think. All of it. All of the ribs in the cages and I’m going to die it hurts so bad. So, okay, no deep breaths, I got this. Just use your throat muscles to push every song. For the next eight hours. No big whoop. Who needs proper mechanics? It’s just my throat. (Insert nervous laughter.) Did I mention it was hot? Like, Africa hot, if I may paraphrase from the great Neil Simon. So I’m sweaty, I stink, my left side is throbbing and I can’t sing. I’m trying to paint a picture here. So we settled into a standard Rusty Nail gig. Every note is agony, but we’re getting through it (thank you Tim for sharing the load and if any of you chuckled at that get your minds out of the gutter) and I’m mentally gearing up for the Carney’s gig when I get a text from my guitar player; Family emergency. Not going to make the gig tonight. I receive this as 745. The gig is at 9. My guitar player, Dr David Bee, is an optometrist and reliable guy so my first thought is, Yeesh, I hope everything is okay. My second thought is, How the hell are we going to play this Carney’s show tonight? I’m running out of room so I’ll keep it short; after shaking the guitar tree and finding no fruit, and almost conscripting Tim into the band, I decided the sanest thing to do was have a Bonus Terry O’ke night, which we did, and it ended up being a lot of fun. And Dr Bee, we’re all thinking of you and your mom and hope she gets well soon. And it’s possible that all happened on Monday. I’m never really sure what day it is. Oh, and thank you for the recommendation, Diane Stopyra, I love my new Brooks. Brooks’? Whatever, I love them. Pretty wise for a 14-year-old. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

A

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

t last, a decent warm spell. I am never happier than when the temperature is such that ill-prepared Shoebies catch afire in the midday sun. Cape May’s excellent fire department was founded not for the purpose of extinguishing house fires per se, but to rapidly douse combusting tourists. That’s one of many facts that will soon appear in Encyclopedia D’Catur-ica, a true explanation for everything in Cape May. Such was the density of hot bodies on the beach and promenade in high season that a simple spontaneous human combustion could rapidly spread, much like a wildfire, though fueled by fat. That is how the Great Fire of 1878 began. The mercury topped 130 degrees and an entire family of husky visitors from Philly caught afire on the beach. The onshore wind carried the flames across a sea of prone, combustible sunbathers, and across the road to the hotel, where the entire late-summer stock of “Mahogany Extra Tanning Oil – With Added Gasoline” erupted. We agreed such could never happen again, and so founded the fire department (motto:

No Combusting Shoebie Left Ablaze!”) along with the Fireproof Asbestos Bikini and Thong Company, whose wonderful advertising slogan — “Look Smoking Hot Without The Smoke!” was a stroke of genius. Sadly, there was some irritating politically correct hoohaa about asbestos, and wild claims that it might not be good for one’s health, and so we had to retire the garments. In fact, we repurposed some 3,000 unsold bikinis and did a deal with a housing construction company, that used them for fireproof insulation. To this day, peo-

Find Your Way Back...

ple in Cape May who carry out renovations report quantities of skimpy beachwear inside the walls, and often mistakenly assume these are the result of a serial killer, and call 911 or that wonderful Channel Craig psychic medium fellow who appears in town every year, to scare up some ghosts. Of course, the city DID have its own serial killer — The Cape May Cabana Chiller Killer — but that’s another story, also to be found in the Encyclopedia D’Catur-ica. Enough nostalgia — the chill evenings are upon us again: it dropped to 74 degrees overnight, necessitating a rummage around for one of my old fur coats (from before I realized it was wrong to shoot 320 marmosets to make one fine coat). But I am confident that due to our current administration’s absolute confident scorn for the notion of climate change, that we will soon be hitting 100 degrees at least one half of the year, and though this might mean that we need to relocate the beachfront by 100 yards, and jack our homes up a few feet, that’s a small price to pay to bask in the sun yearround. We should also buy the fire department some extra long hoses in preparation.

S

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Movies on the Beach

ome people require ideal conditions for movie watching. They want ushers to bar the doors against latecomers. They seek ergonomic seating and crisp projection. My sound engineer friend gets cranky if he can’t secure the best seat for sound in every theater — at Carnegie Hall, I think, it’s in the first tier balcony, slightly off center. His home theater aims audio excellence at one chair, perfectly placed on a taped mark in the center of the room. Movies on the Beach is not for these people. Movies on the Beach is for people who enjoy the communal act of movie watching and aren’t bothered by imperfect sight lines. It’s for people who don’t mind a mother softly singing along with Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz, turning “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” into a lullaby for the toddler in her lap. It’s for people who enjoy sharing a significant look with a stranger as she realizes her kid understands Teri Garr’s “Roll, roll, roll in the hay,” line in Young Frankenstein; people who enjoy the crowd’s giggles of anticipation

as those who have seen a classic anticipate the reaction of those who haven’t; people who aren’t insulted if their date falls asleep midway through the film. It’s for people who can get comfortable on a blanket in the sand, with the sound of the waves and the arcade as background music, and the stars in the sky competing for attention with the stars on the screen. It’s a summertime treat. Cape May’s Movies on the Beach are also free. There are activities for the kids before the movie starts, and space at the edge of the crowd for them to move around if they get antsy. There’s usually enough of a breeze to

keep the bugs away, and it’s often cool, so you get to wear your new Cape May sweatshirt. Nearby shops and restaurants offer more variety than any concession stand, everything from fudge to ice cream to hot dogs to lobster rolls. And, if it rains, the whole thing moves indoors to Convention Hall. Bring your blanket or beach chair to Stockton Beach in Cape May every Thursday through August 29. Children’s activities begin at 8:00 and the movies usually begin around 8:30. Double check what’s playing, lest your Friday beach day be ruined because you brought your 10-yearold to see Jaws. Bring your own snacks, pack a late dinner picnic, or get some takeout. Bring a sweatshirt and bug spray, just in case. Be prepared to piggy back a sleepy kid back to the hotel room. Scheduled movies include Young Frankenstein on July 25; The Wizard of Oz on August 1; Jaws on August 8; The Secret Life of Pets on August 15; Sherlock Gnomes on August 22; and Mary Poppins Returns on August 29.

The Movie Column

“Rocketman” and “Yesterday” reviewed by Dottie Knapp

T

wo very different movies, two decades of music, one common element: unbelievable. Rocketman follows the younger days of Elton John. My husband Mal hadn’t heard any of his music; I have, but never attended any of his concerts. Well, we both feel like we’ve been to one of Elton’s concerts now. It’s like you have a first row seat with all the music, high performance, costumes, lights… this film had moments of brilliance. We felt all the emotion with heart-stopping songs. More importantly, the story was compelling and the acting was exceptional. If Rami Malek won Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody last year, then Taron Egerton needs to at least be nominated for his portrayal of Sir Elton. And watch for Ron Howard’s daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard. You may not recognize her. She transform herself to play Elton John’s demanding mother, Sheila. This film focuses on the superstar’s rise in popularity, and our next film explores

a world where four other superstars never existed. While Rocketman was more in your face at times, the movie Yesterday was delightfully charming. Imagine waking up in a world where the Beatles never existed. Himesh Patel plays Jack Malik, a guy who wakes up in an alternate universe where the fab four have been erased from time. He is the only one who knows of their music, and he introduces the world to many of the group’s older songs for the first time. Now this is our music, and mostly

they used earlier Beatles songs. In fact, we would welcome a sequel where they launch into later recordings of the legendary lads from Liverpool. The premise of Yesterday was simply pleasant, and the way it was executed was masterful. And we encourage you to go with someone who knows the Beatles well — you’ll get all the references better that way. There are little inside jokes that hardcore fans will get more quickly. There were seemingly throwaway lines that someone more knowledgeable would have gotten right away. We’re waiting for Rocketman to come to Broadway as the next big musical. Literally take it of the screen and put it on the stage, and you’ve got a hit on your hands. Yesterday was more enjoyable for us because it played to the music of our generation, and did so very agreeably. We are waiting for this movie to come out on DVD so we can own it —Rocketman was good to have seen once, but that’s all we’ll need. But see them both — these two musicfilled films definitely struck the right chord.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’m leaving for college next month. I will be a freshman and my father, who always wanted to be a doctor, wants me to go in as a pre-med major. I am more interested in being a microbiologist and I am tired of arguing this point with him. He is paying the bill, but am I supposed to live a life that I don’t want just because my father couldn’t fulfill his own dreams? I know that sounds harsh and I don’t want to say that out loud, but I’m getting more and more frustrated. — Not Going My Way Dear My Way First of all, a majority of incoming freshmen end up changing majors a couple times before they ever graduate, so both of you are overreacting to something that may never come to fruition in either case. Secondly, a lot can happen once you actually start classes and

Wise answers to perplexing questions

begin taking exams. More importantly, yes, your father will have to come to terms with the fact that whether he is paying or not, you must live the life you want and not the one he is imposing on you. On the other hand, it might be wise to think about a Plan B — for paying for those final years after you have declared a major. In the meantime, take dad to Cape May Brewing Co. so the two of you can enjoy an evening free of debate. Dear Answer Lady I work in a popular restaurant in town.

It’s pretty intense and getting along with the kitchen staff is essential to getting along with the customers and making sure their dinner is made to their satisfaction. The problem is one of the line cooks has made it real clear he doesn’t like me. I’m not sure why. I suspect because one of the women servers likes me a lot and doesn’t like him. I have a girlfriend so the whole thing is stupid. But what can I do to fix it because he makes sure my plates come up last or not quite right? Fortunately, he only works a couple of nights but it’s enough make the night miserable. — Targeted Dear Targeted Try this: On a night he works, and you don’t, show up for dinner and make a point of introducing him to your girlfriend. If he likes a beer after hours, go to Collier’s Liquor Store and pick him up a six-pack. Most importantly, you are simply going to have to go out of your way to make nice and discourage any advances from his virtual lady love. We don’t mean to be rude, just avoid hanging out or any excessive chitchat. Yes, it’s annoying, but humans are crazy sometimes.

Bird Droppings

W

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

henever I return from some distant strand, I am astonished by the bird riches of New Jersey. My wife Linda and I spent most of June in Maine, and while the environment is compelling and temperatures moderate, I missed the birds of South Jersey — Carolina Wren, Purple Martin, Chimney Swift, Gray Catbird, Northern Cardinal. I’m not saying Maine is impoverished. All I’m saying is that New Jersey boasts more diversity and has greater bird density. Just down the street from our home, Prairie Warblers and Blue Grosbeaks are breeding, two species that would stop traffic in Maine. Puffins? Well they don’t breed here, but they winter offshore. As for migrating shorebirds, New Jersey’s unglaciated coast is a magnet for hungry shorebirds. Maine’s rocky coast, not so much. Invertebrates like sand and mud — New Jersey has lots of both. Last year, I went on a shorebird field trip that involved a two-mile walk to reach a marshy area. In Cape May, the stuff flanks every

causeway and in July and August, tidal pools are jammed, shoulder to shoulder with dowitchers and yellowlegs. And let’s not overlook those Sandpipers playing tag with the waves. High Arctic breeders, the tiny dynamos are migrating south, now. Enjoy them, they are part of our natural dowery. What they are searching for in the wave-softened sand are small invertebrate prey, chiefly mole crabs. Enjoy the show and keep Fido on a leash.

The birds are putting on weight to continue their journey. Some may travel as far as Tierra del Fuego. That’s a long way for a tiny bird whose wings knit hemispheres and whose feet straddle biomes. Shorebirds are miracles clad in feathers, as evolutionarily refined as any bird on the planet. Built for speed, with scimitar-shaped wings, bodies trimmed to reduce drag and a blood sugar mixture twice as rich as ours, North America’s shorebirds are worth your study. Everyday miracles we get to see routinely on the Jersey Shore. Adults migrate first, young follow. We don’t know how birds which hatched just weeks ago know where to go. All we know is that by staggering the migration by age class, it reduces competition. You’ll know the juveniles when you see them — their backs look scaly. Adults may show traces of their red breeding plumage about the head and neck — otherwise they live up to their species name, Calidris alba. Alba, white. The blank canvas upon which changing seasons are painted.

Russell, Maureen, Kathy, Dennis Lee Trimble will speak about his novel, “Beyond The Call”, and hold a book signing. Lee Trimble’s “Beyond The Call” tells the inspiring true story of Captain Robert Trimble, a hero who rescued hundreds of World War II POWs. Captain Trimble was chosen for this covert mission with very little training in covert operations. Without formal training on his side, this man risked it all to bring his fellow soldiers to freedom. This lecture is open to the public and is a free, family-friendly event. Doors open at 6:30pm & lecture starts at 7:00pm.

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

BELLA is a sweet 10 year old Border Collie who came to the shelter because her owner is ill. She lived with another dog (Jack- also at the shelter) and could blend into a family with another dog if a proper introduction was made. Be prepared to meet Bella on several occasions before taking her home. A quiet adult household is recommended. Come by!

KISKA is a young black, white, and gray beauty who was found wandering and brought to the shelter. She loves to run in the yard but quickly returns to her human for a quick pat. Kiska would be comfortable in a family that is familiar with husky traits and would keep her exercised and active. Adopt this beautiful lady today!

ESKA is an energetic young husky who arrived at the shelter as a stray. She is a bit nervous when meeting new people but quickly warms up and flashes her husky grin. Although she loves the activity of long walks, she is still working on her leash skills. Eska is an affectionate girl and would succeed with an owner that understands her puppiness is part of her charm!

CUDDLES refuses to be ignored, especially when it’s time for dinner. If you don’t speak cat, that’s okay he’ll still talk to you anyway. Cuddles loves to be pet and chin scratches are his favorite. He get along with other cats too! Cuddles doesn’t know why someone would just leave him outside, but he’s ready to find his new home! (FIV+)

ROCK got his name because he’s a tough guy on the outside with a heart of gold on the inside! If you come meet him, Rock will be sure to steal all of your attention. He likes being pet and brushed, but he also loves playtime! Don’t worry about his eye, Rock got hurt a long time ago when he was living on the streets but it’s not a worry anymore! (FIV+)

DEJA was supposed to be fixed and then put back outside, but was offered a chance. She was given the opportunity to prove that she can be someone’s special kitty. That she could stay warm indoors and not have to fight for her scraps. Deja’s gentle demeanor is what saved her life from the outdoors and is what will change your heart to leaving her behind.
