Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

The Pufferfish (aka blowfish) may look adorbs, but its poison is 1,200 times more deadly than cyanide, even to humans. Another defense mechanism? The creature can rapidly inflate with air and water to appear too large to eat. In Japan, the pufferfish is a delicacy, despite one bad cut spelling certain death. Eleven people died by pufferfish in Japan between 2005-2014... is it worth the risk?

In 1939, Jesse Laudeman, a local fish dealer, purchased Schellenger’s Landing docks from Reading Railroad Company. He grew his wholesale operation, Cold Spring Fish and Supply Company. Located on the docks was a small restaurant called Bateman’s that Jesse and his wife Vaud turned over to their son, Wally. Now, the Cold Spring Fish and Supply Company is run by Wally and Marijane’s son, Keith Laudeman. The operation includes a fish market, packing and shipping plant, fishing fleet and The Lobster House restauran. The doecks are one of three commercial fishing operations that make up the second-largest port on the east coast.

Inside City Hall

The happenings from Cape May City Council’s latest meeting... by Susan Tischler QUOTE OF THE NIGHT “Frankly, my concern is not the eating habits of people who go to the beach.” The Honorable Carl Buck, III regarding the hot dog vendor in front of his Beach Avenue property. More later.

R

emember that on the table, off the table... No wait — it’s still tabled —motion/ordinance to livestream meetings? No? Here’s what you need to know: Councilmember Stacy Sheehan has been trying to get an ordinance passed since May which would require advisory committee meetings to be taped or livestreamed, maintaining the public should be privy to their discussions. The motion has repeatedly gone down by the dreaded 3-2 vote. The majority – Chuck Lear, Tricia Hendricks and Shaine Meier – maintain that the volunteers on those committees are camera shy and will feel constrained to discuss ideas openly and may be discouraged from volunteering. So, the ordinance appeared once again and council in a 5-0 vote took it back off the table and then summarily voted it down in

a, wait for it, 3-2 vote. Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn That’s pretty much what Carl Buck III told Deputy Mayor Hendricks and councilmember Sheehan when they said the hot dog vendor in front of his Beach Avenue house likes it there because it is “fruitful” and “an economic issue.” To illustrate his displeasure with the vendor’s appearance, he brought visual aids. Three ginormous photos of a seen-betterdays-white van, propped-up cart and weirdumbrella array hot dog stand. Sort of the shabby chic of hot dog vendors. Judge Buck argues that there are seven spots along Beach where vendors can set up. There are currently

only two vendors on the beachfront. They are supposed to rotate locations daily. His plea before council is to allow others to “share the wealth” and eliminate Judge Buck’s property as a possible location. His reason: “Because I have been blessed with this vendor for many, many years.” He has no problem with the other vendor because “his vehicle doesn’t look like a disaster.” Since this is the second year in which he has asked for a change, he actually wrote an ordinance and submitted it to City Solicitor Frank Corrado, who says he did not receive it. What happened? Yeah, nothing. Cape May TPA Gives Thumb Down to PSB Plans The air went out of the room Tuesday night when CM Taxpayers Association spokesman Jules Rauch delivered a stinging criticism of the city’s process in determining what kind of Public Safety Building will be constructed. If your head has been in the swimming pool these last few months, the city hopes to build a police and fire facility, aka a Public Service Building (PSB). There are those who feel the lot is too small to accommodate one facility and those who are perfectly happy

with that configuration, among them the two chiefs, CMFD’s Alex Coulter and CMPD’s Tony Marino. Why is TPA Against It? In calling for the city to “suspend all architectural design activity,” TPA argues the city has not presented “documented justification” for the current design plans being discussed. Rauch called for a referendum on the project, which has also been touted by councilmember Zack Mullock. Sheehan has also been critical of the process — hence the livestreaming effort. In order to pass a bond to pay for the PSB, the city needs four votes in favor. During the public comment section of the meeting, Chief Marino said he hoped the TPA position “would not derail the project.” Fun Fact: Kate Wyatt, who is the TPA president, also heads up the PSB Advisory Committee. Awkward! Sparks fly Chief Marino took issue with councilmember Sheehan’s objection to using a lieutenant for duty and paying that officer overtime. Fun Fact: Lieutenants are salaried and have contracts prohibiting the payment of overtime. Sheehan earlier got into a back-and-forth with City Manager Neil Young over the overtime. It seems the police department is short four officers and, by fall, five. Chief Marino said he is also hampered in hiring because of the infrequency of the civil service exams. He has reached out to the county asking for 30 applicants and got six, two of whom were disqualified, leaving four to consider. He also said, in the past, CMPD academy graduates have worked in Cape May for two years and then transferred to a department outside of the city. Chief Marino said he asked City Manager Young about the legality of the overtime and got the okay. Ironic Touch: Sheehan’s brother Rob was the CMPD chief until he got into a kerfuffle over the issue of comp time versus flex time in regard to then Lieutenant Chuck Lear’s contract — now mayor. Sheehan stuck to her guns stating that her objection

August 1, 2019 was paying a lieutenant O.T. instead of changing the shifts. Councilmember Meier charged Sheehan with “airing our dirty laundry in public.” Sheehan argued that the money is “public and the public should know.” Reservations about Preservation Several residents, most of them from Jefferson Street, saying that council may not be keeping an eye on the city’s historic landmark status as much as they should and the result is “lollipopping”, aka elevating a property above its appropriate lot size. Roz Johnson complained about “the monstrosity” being built on Washington: “I was told it’s a 10-unit condominium with 10 parking garages?” No one on council or the city manager would confirm nor deny if they knew what was being built. Johnson also asked how the developer was permitted to build such a structure without the neighbors being notified. According to Hendricks, the plans were approved in 2008 and suggested that she OPRA (Open Public Documents Act) the plans. Johnson asked how she was to interpret them even if she goes to the trouble of OPRAing them. Anything Else? Oh yeah. The residents of Jefferson Street are pretty upset by the “renovation” of a house at 901 Benton Street. The Federal-style house was built circa 1909 and was designated a contributing structure. In other words, not quite historic but pretty close. The new owners raised the house and, according to the neighbors, altered the landscape allowing a stream which runs through the area to now flood the other neighbors’ homes — which they allege, it did NOT do occur prior to the “renovations.” Additionally, the neighbors maintain the house has not been renovated but virtually demolished and is a slap in the face to the city’s preservation status, or as one Jefferson Street resident put it, “If you don’t stop this now, you’re going to lose the city’s landmark status. Get on top of this now while you can.”

Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. Where we ate: Foo Bao, the eatery serving Asian street food next to Zoe’s Cafe in the Beach Theater complex on Beach Avenue. The name: It translates to Lucky Bun. The menu: Asian sliders, aka open-faced, steamed buns with a variety of savory fillings. The owners: That would be Amy Kao and Lu Rexhepi, who are scuba divers, new parents and generally cool people. This year, they took over the Rhythm of the Sea, an arts and crafts bed-andbreakfast on the beachfront, as well as Zoe’s Cafe, across from Convention Hall. In the annex space next door, they opened Foo Bao, since Lu — formerly executive chef of Cape May’s SeaSalt — lived in Thailand and has a background in Asian food. He was also the chef at Kittichai in Manhattan, serving gourmet Thai food. The occasion: Sunday Funday. Once again, we were feeling hungry after a lazy, lovely beach day in Cape May Point. But, because we were sandy, we wanted something quick and casual, where we could eat outside and in the shade. The deal: $5.50 gets you one Foo Bao bun, but $10 gets you two filling buns PLUS a side of green papaya salad and a can of soda. We tried a bunch of options, including the pineapple-chili aioli shrimp, the soy-braised short rib, the sesame-chili chicken and the Asian BBQ pork. We also went for the Thai-Basil lemonade, which hits the spot on a hot day. (But, yes, they DO offer Thai iced tea, too.) The verdict: The flavors! Oh, the flavors! Be still our hearts! What a different-yet-approachable addition to the Cape May dining scene. The conversation: How good the buns are, obviously. How good the people-watching is from an outdoor table, where you overlook foot traffic on Beach Avenue and the promenade while feeling that delicious ocean breeze. And how cool it is that that Convention Hall, just across the street, offers $5 fitness classes year round. The dessert: Rita’s Italian Ice is JUST next door, so call it luck. Call it fate. Call it a ridiculously good idea.

I

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

come to you this first day of August in the midst of a stretch of nine gigs in eightdays, my voice as supple and soothing as 30-grit sandpaper rubbing a balloon on a chalkboard, my legs as fresh as a Jack O’Lantern in December, but at least I’ve gained three pounds. I’m pretty sure at this point that my voice has become invincible. It seems no matter how hard I try to kill it, a Billy Joel show the day after a Beatles show the day before a Springsteen show after an acoustic show, it always rises from the ashes. Literal ashes, as my continued attempts to stop smoking have, so far, failed. Though I have cut down quite a bit. Which, I know, doesn’t mean much. But I have gone so far as to purchase myself a new vape. And I will now never shut up about being a vaper. Anyway, it’s possible I’ve had a couple of cocktails and think I sound better than I do, but I’m pretty sure that, girl, I’m amazing. Yas kween! Come hear and judge for yourself on Saturday at Exit Zero (6-10), Sunday at Rusty Nail and Carney’s (4-8 & 9-1) or Thursday at Mayer’s Tavern (7-10). Or come judge others

at Carney’s at Tuesday night Terry O’ke (9-1). This is actually one of my slower weeks... Fate took me to Cape May Court House last week where I ventured into their branch of Avalon Bagel and discovered the most aggressively awful sippy lids ever. There was no way to drink without searing some part of my delicate upper lip. It was like the Corn Baller in Arrested Development. If you don’t understand this reference, stop what you’re doing and go watch Arrested Development. Why was I in CMCH, you might ask? Shut up and I’ll tell you, I might answer. I was

at the radiologist to get X-rays of my ribcage and figure out what the hell is going on in there (for context, please refer to my dramatic reenactment from last week’s column). I was also there to get a mammogram. Or ManO-Gram, as the tech called it. Found a lump, made an appointment, got it checked, everything is fine. You can read this paragraph one of two ways; me trying to de-stigmatize what is generally considered a female issue, or making fun of me for being fat enough to have a breast exam. That choice says more about the reader than about me. And, ladies, I now totally empathize. I promise I’m not making it up when I tell you that a few people a week have been introducing themselves and telling me how much they enjoy the colulumn, they’ve been reading it forever, can’t believe Owen has graduated and Jackson and Henry are growing into such fine young men. Problem is, I rarely have the time or wherewithal to jot down names (“jot down” = open Google Drive on my phone, I am nothing if not a 21st cenury columnist). But I do remember running into Jim Faulkner

outside Sunset Liquors before a recent shift at the Filling Station (it always helps to quaff a pint of vodka before going in there… kidding) who made no bones about not being a fan in my earlier tenure (03-10) but has grown to appreciate my stylings since my return last year. Either he has evolved or I have gotten better, and I don’t think I’ve gotten better. So… thanks, Jim? At Mayer’s Tavern I Barbare Haight, who some might remember for having a jawless dog that romped around Higbee’s (and now haunts my dreams). She asked me why Jack Wright is selling his West Cape May home. I don’t actually know, but I answered, “Drugs.” Then there is the inimitable Tim Shriver, singing bartender at Carney’s, who has regaled our huge Terry O’ke crowds with songs ranging from Frank Sinatra to Willie Nelson. Neither of us is able to hop up on the stage quite like we used to (the stageright step ladder has become as essential a piece of equipment as my karaoke computer or microphones) but Tim is still the bighearted, relentless ball-breaker he’s always been. And you know what? Not a bad singer. I also got to hang with Ben Cohen, who is besties with Kathi Horan Schaedler and jumped in as a karaoke judge and we are now best friends. I was remiss in not talking about the amazing gig my Billy Joel band, The Strangers, played in Stone Harbor two weeks ago. Huge stage, loud speakers, about 300 people. I got to feel like a real Big Shot. I was even more remiss in not telling you my Beatles band, Love Me Dudes, played there this past Tuesday. So I, uh, hope you liked it? Big thanks to Marnie Lengle, Grand Dame of Stone Harbor, for booking us. It’s been so weird having money this summer. If I need something I can just, like, buy it. I did a little investigative journalism (I read their business card) and discovered that Ostara’s, the cute coffee shop on Park Boulevard I’ve been having

August 1, 2019 fun with this summer, is run by Vickie and Anastasia Ostara, a couple of sisters-in-law who “like each other more than our husbands.” Pop in and support this family business, and make sure you order from the baby. That toddler makes a hell of a latte. I would absolutely pay $1 a month for the rest of my life for a streaming app that only showed The Office. Days Without Smoking: 1. Hoping to get it up to 2 any day. The 7th and final season of Orange is the New Black is pure Trump derangement porn. Used to think Dr Bee was a nice guy until he pulled a Shoebie U-ee in front of Carney’s and snaked the parking spot that was rightfully mine. (The Shoebie U-ee is a U-turn executed in the middle of a street with total disregard for traffic laws and human decency, usually perpetrated by tourists who believe Driving However You Want Because You’re On Vacation is a thing.) Everything worked out in the end as another car left and we each backed up a space. Even paid for my meter! But I’m not sure I can ever truly forgive a Shoebie U-ee. At the request of local gadabout John Cooke, The Terry O’Brien Band opened our Carney’s show with Bruce Springsteen Sunday night and this continues to be the most fun set of music I’ve sung in my 25 years as a professional singer. Until we play an R.E.M. set, which will then be the most fun. I’d also like to thank my friend Stephen Prince for talking to my wife during the entire Bruce set which are the songs I sing to try to make her, uh, happy. Thanks, bud. That’s going to do it for this week. Dropping off for a quick nap before my Rusty Nail gig where I’ll try, once again, to put a stake through the heart of my voice. Okay, that was weird. Ahem, where I’ll try, once again, to entertain a crowd of wonderful guests with my singing abilities. Better? ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Exit Zero Filling Station Ambush Come get gas at our place and you might just get lucky!

It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places. This week we bumped into Brenda and Rob Avoletta from Virginia, and their friend Helen Santoro from Philly who said that being in Exit Zero is on their bucket list! Congrats you made it! We asked them each to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. They picked out a $10 discount to Tommy’s Folly, $5 off A Place On Earth and $3 off Fudge Kitchen. Helen said she’d share with her niece, and Brenda and Rob their children.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am very happy with my score on the Cape May Celtic Tanning Chart, originally designed for Irish immigrants. I regard the Irish as a pestilence and only slightly more loathsome than the Scotchmen, who tend to arrive singly and wander around town like tiny rainclouds, whereas the Irish historically came in boatloads, stumbling around singing and bare-knuckle boxing, until given roles in police and fire departments, whereupon they would stumble around singing and bare-knuckle boxing, but with fire hoses and nightsticks. I am beginning to think that we Lenape (I use the term “we” loosely and take into account the effects of mass murder, starvation and forced loss of land, plus those pox-ridden blankets. In view of all of that, I feel it’s my duty to “be” a modern-day Lenape. Obviously, I have modified that a little, to encompass my ownership of the D’Catur Mansion and my fleet of collectible automobiles, but I think I am a Lenape in spirit) should have outlawed the immigration of people whose intent was genocide, and turned those boatloads of

rowdy Irishmen, dour Germans, over-talkative Italians and relentless Frenchmen around, with a canister of buckshot as reminder not to come here again. Well, those Irishmen arrived pink, and within a few days of summer starting, were verging on crimson. The Germans, oddly, tended to go brown, whereas the Scots went from blue to white. We devised the chart to encourage those vampire-like arrivals to survive their first summer, perhaps by putting their vests back on, and possibly wearing hats.

Find Your Way Back...

It was not that we minded the thinning of their ranks, as such, but they can be a dreadful blight on the landscape, when sizzling like bacon and rambling about “the old country” and “the craic”. So, we have our “stealth sunblock” program, where tanning specialists walk around with their charts, which are not unlike the Pantone books that pretentious people like to own. Whenever a resident or visitor matches one of the danger zones – skin colors that are, to be technical, scarlet, “like a well-slapped erse”, peeled or rare, they are sprayed head to toe with factor 100, which is rather like emulsion paint. Thus people are actively encouraged to match the parts of the chart with names such as cowhide, mahogany, George Hamilton and drip coffee, no milk. I am currently midway between chocolate labrador and Uncle Bill’s Delicious Pancake, a tone that is, thanks to my diligent nude tanning regime on Cape May’s secret naked beach, 100 per cent consistent across my whole body. My aim is to end the season “beef jerky”, with the skin texture like an aged handbag.

S

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, learning to surf

urfers tend to be, dare I say, nice. Something in the nature of the sport gives its practitioners an appearance of inner peace. Maybe it’s the etiquette of the line up. Perhaps it’s the patience required — surfers spend most of their time paddling and waiting, only to ride a wave for an average of six seconds. Once they are up, they seem to care less about conquering their wave than joining with it. This connection tends to make them outstanding stewards of the environment. Surfers share a language that requires a translator — goofy foot, A-frame waves, barrels, bumps. They also share a culture that goes beyond California and the Beach Boys. River surfers from Munich share something with lake surfers in Illinois and tow-in surfers in New South Wales. If you’ve ever wanted to join the surfing community, Cape May is a great place to learn. EcoVentures offers surfing lessons for children and adults on weekdays and limited Saturdays. Call for reservations as early as possible, 609-742-5656. They provide all

the equipment you need for 60 minute ($65) or 90 minute ($95) group lessons where participants learn at their own pace. Private lessons are also available, perfect for people who need a little extra help. Ocean safety information is included, and instructors are CPR and First Aid Certified. Steger Beach Service also offers lessons, starting at $65 each for groups of three or more. Call 609884-3058 for information. You can also rent a surfboard from Steger’s if you have a friend who can teach you. If you’d like to “step into liquid” more gently, consider stand up paddleboarding

(SUP). SUP is a great workout and a great way to explore the salt marshes. Aqua Trails, located by the Nature Center on Delaware Avenue, offers SUPs for rent every day. Keep to the harbor, or take your board to the beach for a little more excitement. One hour is $25.00, two hours is $35. Half day, full day and weekly rentals are also available. Call 609-884-5600 or book online at aquatrails. com. Aqua Trails also offers a morning camp for teens August 12-16. This is a great way to tire your kids out so you have a chance of keeping up with them the rest of the day. Call the Nature Center of Cape May (609-8988848) for information. Steger’s also rents SUPs for similar rates, at the foot of the Cape May Bridge near Utsch’s Marina. Follow signs to their neighbor, East Coast Watersports. Renters under 16 need a guardian’s permission. SUP Cape May (609-827-1086) offers a 90 minute tour, including photography, for $45; special sunset and full moon paddles, and a Yoga SUP class for $45. They also have an intense $90 tour for advanced paddlers only.

The Theater Column

East Lynne Theater Company’s “The Rainmaker” reviewed by Dottie Knapp

L

et’s make one thing clear — East Lynne Theater Company’s The Rainmaker is a comedy and all the actors, under Gayle Stahlhuth’s direction, use every opportunity to give you an evening of fun. But this play is more than just laughs. Not to get sappy, but it’s about faith, hope and charity. And since it’s a story about a family, we have sibling rivalry and the reward at the end is self-confidence gained by the interaction of all concerned. John Cameron Weber, playing H.C., the father of the Curry clan, is an East Lynne alum. He is genial and kind, and I enjoyed watching his reactions as the play develops. His body language and facial expressions are as clear as his spoken words. Another familiar East Lynne Theater Company face is Mark Edward Lang, playing Noah, the older brother who exemplifies practicality and rigidity. Watch him become softer and more caring. The younger brother Jim, played by Jeffrey Smith, will have you smiling as soon as he steps on

the stage. He is more than charming as a young man trying to find himself. Like their dad, the brothers want a husband for their sister, Lizzie. Mat Labotka is File, the unmarried deputy sheriff, and unwilling target of the Curry family men as a possible suitor for Lizzie. He does a lovely job of being a sympathetic character in spite of his rejection of Lizzie. You’ll enjoy watching the sheriff, played by Jeff Sharkey (another East Lynne alum), try to convince File he needs

companionship. Like all the characters in this well written play by N. Richard Nash, everyone evolves, and Lizzie, as portrayed by East Lynne veteran Veronique Hurley, perhaps most of all. You can’t help but love her as she goes from first believing she’s plain, to radiantly glowing by the end of the play. She also has the comic touch when she imitates the suggestions by the men in her family as to how to get a man. When Jon Kovach explodes on the scene as Starbuck, the Rainmaker, who for the price of $100 will bring an end to the drought, I promise you: you’ll believe he can. You have until August 31 to see the fine ensemble cast bring this 1954 Broadway play to life. One of the playwright’s daughters, Amanda Nash, is coming to see the show on August 1. For information and reservations, call 609-884-5898 or visit eastlynnetheater.org. East Lynne Theater Company performs in The First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, 500 Hughes Street.

ARIES: You will fall in love this week! (And we don’t just mean with the Asian buns at Foo Bao on Beach Avenue.) TAURUS: You willl take a break from alcohol because, let’s face it, that beer belly is getting too big. It’s okay; you will discover a new appreciation for flavored water and prune juice. GEMINI: You will check out David Macomber’s new art studio on Washington Street. You will find a painting to spruce up that one sad room in the house ( you know which one we’re talking about and, sadly, so do all of your friends). CANCER: You will realize all your hopes and dreams. Sorry, we meant to say “memes” — it will be a busy week on social media. LEO: You will attend the annual Cape May Craft Beer and Crab Festival Saturday, August 3, at the Emlen Physick Estate. You will leave feeling less… crabby. VIRGO: You will attend Rocktown Tuesday at Exit Zero Filling Station for a soundtrack of classic rock and $5 vodka specials. You will spontaneously perform your very best air guitar for everyone in the dining room. LIBRA: You will book a trip kayaking in the Pine Barrens in order to get in touch with nature. You will, instead, get in touch with your need for air conditioning. SCORPIO: You will attempt to waterski. You will fail spectacularly. SAGITTARIUS: You will get The Carpenters’ “Rainy Days and Mondays” stuck in your head. This will be particularly annoying as it is neither raining nor is is Monday. CAPRICORN: You will run into your ex. Unfortunately, you will be hyperventilating your way through frog lunges while listening to Ace of Base at North Beach Health Club at the time. AQUARIUS: You will bike to the Central Park Farm Market with friends. You will buy produce you don’t even like because it looks so pretty — cucumbers for everyone! PISCES: You will watch a sunset at the Cove. Against a pink and orange sky, you will see dolphins leaping and surfers dropping in on glassy waves, and you will marvel at the beauty of this place.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am 16 and do not have much money. I do work a part-time job but most of that goes to help my mother out. I told my girlfriend that I would love to go to a rock concert in Atlantic City next month. She said, “Oh, I can get the tickets for you.” I was thrilled. She did get the tickets and then asked me for the money. The ticket cost $79. She’s asked me for the money twice and when I told her I thought she was giving me the tickets, she just laughed and asked me how I could think she would ever do that and told all our friends. I paid her but was I wrong or was I right? I feel so stupid. — Scammed Dear Scammed You were certainly not scammed. Your friend did not benefit from getting the tickets or take your money and not give you the

Wise answers to perplexing questions

ticket. You simply misunderstood her intent. It’s an easy thing to do and it probably never occurred to you to question what you thought was her generosity. It’s unfortunate she told your friends, but these things are forgotten in a week. Turn this into a good thing. Apologize for the misunderstanding. Go to the concert. Have a good time. Or try to sell the ticket. Either way, take this burden off your shoulders. Give yourself a mental health break. Go to Dairy Queen on the Washington Street Mall and treat yourself to a blizzard.

Dear Answer Lady My father died last week. He was a very difficult man right to the end but my mother, who was married to him for over 50 years, is devastated. The problem is my father said he wanted no funeral, no memorial service. My sisters and I are trying to convince our mother that memorial services are for honoring the deceased, but let’s face it, are for the living. We want her to able to hear stories about dad — he was a character. We want her to be surrounded by friends who can comfort her and ease the loss. She reads your column and we were wondering if you would tell us what you think. — Bereaved Dear Bereaved Why should your mother be saddled with dealing with this devastating loss alone? You might want to think about having the gathering at a place like the Chalfonte, Harry’s or Harpoon’s on the Bay where it is airy and low key and have the feel more of a luncheon for friends. Your mother may fear that she is dishonoring her husband’s wishes, but stress the idea that it is a celebration of life.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

t’s called “bird watching,” but it’s more than this — the act of engaging the birds around us evolves into a sensory interface with the natural world. Take any accomplished birder, place them in a sensory deprivation chamber for a few months, release them into a familiar setting and by dint of what they see and hear, they will tell you the date with two weeks leeway either way. Take this morning. Backyard, Mauricetown, NJ. Hot, humid, green everywhere. I grew up in this soup. But when in summer? Green grass said June. We’re typically crispy brown by July. But if June, why no din of robins singing? Why isn’t the air ringing with the sound of Laughing Gulls. Today, the chatter of Chimney Swifts is the dominant sound. Looks like the kids are fledged. This means July or August. The hummingbird feeder is ringed with fresh plumaged young that the male lets feed and that immature Bald Eagle overhead is showing no molt, so it’s this year’s bird. A cardinal chips and a male streaks

across the yard to meet her. They mate. Second brood time for Cardinals. All the lines seem to be crossing over early to mid-July and the Osprey Overhead second that supposition. Come August the air over Mauricetown rings with the strident cries of young Osprey waiting to be fed. In June it’s adult females screaming for hubby to bring in the damn fish. Looking toward the flowers I find lots of skippers and the yard is being navigat-

ed-crossed by hunting Halloween Pennants (dragonflies that appear in mid-summer.) Yes watching birds simply opens the door to the whole world of nature. So after my audio reconnaissance I am content to say that this is early to mid-July. The wedge of shorebirds passing overhead whose stuttering call notes identified them as Short-billed Dowitcher, sealed the deal. Why not August? Because the air is not filled with Purple Martins, whose millionbird-strong ranks infest the sky then. Today there are only a handful of locals. Bad news for the pennants but good news for a naturalist newly returned from weeks away. I’m glad I didn’t miss the martin buildup. I’ll keep you posted through this column but for now presume that a trip to the Riverside Park in Mauricetown is on your calendar for mid-August. Some years the peak in martin numbers comes early. But I have never seen a Purple Martin in October. By then, the churps and trills of martins will be filtering through the canopy of the Amazon Basin.

FREE LECTURE & FILM SERIES THURSDAY, AUGUST 1ST at 7PM

They eject us from planes when disaster strikes. They gently guide us to Earth from thousands of feet in the air. They transport us with amazing speed and remarkable safety. And they keep us alive in the most extreme environments humans have ever explored. This series tells the stories behind the machines and devices that help us survive in the skies--space suits, parachutes, ejection seats, and jet engines--and how they evolved from humble beginnings to incredible instruments that have changed the world and lifted us to new heights. This lecture is a free, family-friendly event. Doors open at 6:30pm.

BRUNO is two years old and lived harmoniously with a family including an older child whom he loved. Bruno’s best friend was the neighbor’s dog so he may be suited to a household with another pet. Bruno is about 80 lbs. He is crate trained and knows the commands to sit, lay down, wait, and shake. He is a very loving and calm dog. Adopt today!

MAXINE is a two year old German shepherd who lived with a family including children before coming to the shelter. It is reported that she was good with everyone in the family, but was not comfortable with outsiders. It is for this reason that Maxine came to the shelter. Maxine will be seen to potential adopters with an approved application and appointment.

ESKA is an energetic young husky who arrived at the shelter as a stray. She is a bit nervous when meeting new people but quickly warms up and flashes her husky grin. Although she loves the activity of long walks, she is still working on her leash skills. Eska is an affectionate girl and would succeed with an owner that understands her puppiness is part of her charm!

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

BIANCA is a Siamese and snowshoe mix. She’s also a senior princess who will likely have many eager suitors stopping by the shelter. Her vaccinations are up to date, she’s house-trained like a boss, and now all she needs is a good home with a deserving guardian. Think you’re cool enough to care for this hip cat?

ROCK got his name because he’s a tough guy on the outside with a heart of gold on the inside! If you come meet him, Rock will be sure to steal all of your attention. He likes being pet and brushed, but he also loves playtime! Don’t worry about his eye, Rock got hurt a long time ago when he was living on the streets but it’s not a worry anymore! (FIV+)

DUSTY was born in beautiful Victorian Cape May. He was a happy kitten, he was loved, played, hunted like any other kitten. He played by the beach, rolled in the sand. Dusty was special, his caregiver knew he could never part with him. 15 years forward, Dusty’s caregiver passes away, leaving Dusty scared, confused and homeless. Adopt!
