Cuteness Overload On The Beachfront Why, yes, Cape May WAS extra cute on August 2. At 11am, the annual baby parade launched at Congress Street and headed down Beach Avenue before concluding at Howard Street. Trophies were awarded at Convention Hall in several categories, including Pretty Baby, Children Walking in Fancy Dress, Children Walking in Comic Dress, and Decorated on Wheels. But it was arguably spectators on the promenade who received the greatest award: a day of adorableness. See inside for cuteness overload. Pictured: Mom and Alessia, Hope and Pamela Brockman

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

Quahogs are those large clams whose shells are most commonly employed in clamshell pitching contests. They move through the mud of our tidal flats via a muscular foot. With two short siphons, each quahog can filter about a gallon of water per hour, clearing out the pollution. If you see a quahog shell with a small hole at the top, where one might string a necklace, that means the clam has likely been eaten by a snail.

As recently as 18,000 years ago, Ice Age glaciers melted over frozen ground, and some of the gravel, pebbles and other sediment locked within these glaciers flowed south over present-day New Jersey. Oftentimes, the dredges that replenish our beaches tap into these so-called fluvial deposits offshore. In the winter of 2012, to the dismay of tourists, a $9 million replenishment project in Cape May deposited large rocks onto the beach, and a firm from Virginia was brought in — at a cost of $160,000 — to remove more than 3,000 tons worth.

Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Freda’s Café, the cozy BYO eatery on Ocean Street that serves New American fare and flies under the radar. The vibe: Intimate and homey. It’s cute as a button. The server: Alexis waited on us, and Shannon (SO of Max Crowley of Bastard Sons of Captain Mey fame) stopped by the table to chat. Both were engaging and efficient. The apps: Jim Barnes, our good friend and a senior project manager with DL Miner Construction, started with the crab, mascarpone, and artichoke heart-filled spring rolls. They looked good but we wouldn’t know because he refused to share. Jim’s better half and interior design extraordinaire, Allison Faith Morgan, ordered a splendid plate of fried goat cheese. Diane, apparently on a mission to devour every bivalve in the county, opted for the fried oysters with crumbled bacon. Jack slurped a bowl of seafood bisque. The conversation: Restaurant jokes. No, there is NEVER any comedic value in offering a Blockbuster card in lieu of payment. Also, hornets’ nests. Jack is supposed to eradicate one on his rental property for the benefit of his tenants, but the thought of killing innocent creatures… stings. Finally, Allison, a native of Detroit, used to party under the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Detroit with Canada. This is, of course, before border security became what it is now. Today, you’d be lucky to party underneath the West Cape May Bridge without being told to get back on your side. The entrées: Couldn’t resist the crab cakes, a Freda’s signature dish served with garlic mashed potatoes and a mango sauce. We also had the blackened halibut just for the — don’t say it, Jim! — halof-it. We rounded out the meal with ahi tuna and sticky rice ( y’all are going to have to forgive Diane’s chopstick skills) and the Asian peach BBQ glazed mahi and valasso salmon. Succulent, all. The price: High $30s-low $40s. It’s not cheap; it’s gourmet. And you get what you pay for. The takeaway: Oh, we didn’t like this at all! (Sorry, bad restaurant joke…)

This week, Jimmy Iapalucci from The Washington Inn is up. How long have you been bartending? Five years. Favorite drink to make? A New York sour. It’s a whiskey sour with a red wine float. I enjoy floating the wine to complete the cocktail. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When a customer says, “Make me something.” Let’s see how many people tell you to make them something this week! Dream job? A sports analyst.

Wine Of The Week Sunset Liquors Dry Creek Vineyard Fume Blanc $14.99 At first swirl, aromatics of lemon, grapefruit, pineapple and lemongrass leap forward from the glass with nuances of freshly cut grass and cucumber. On the palate, the wine is bright and refreshing with flavors of lemon, passionfruit, grapefruit and lemongrass. Pairs well with scallops.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

othing is going to change until we stop yelling and start talking... I keep thinking one of these weeks will be a slow week but it never happens. I say thinking because I can’t say it because my throat is a toxic waste dumpster fire on a barge of burning tires. Or I hit a skunk. Either way, as I write to you this fine Monday afternoon I have completed a gamut of 15 gigs in 14 days and am staring down the barrel of another 10-in-9-days decathlon. I know writing about my sore throat annoys some of you, but I write about my sore throat because I know it annoys some of you. Most recent was another killer gig at Carney’s on Sunday. How killer? So killer that I was moved to take my mic off its stand and dance around on stage like an idiot for the first time since 1995. But when 200 people are singing along to “Born to Run” what else are you supposed to do? I don’t know how Bruce Springsteen does it. I would literally explode if 50,000 people in a stadium sang along to a song I wrote. Much props to my band mates, Dr David Bee, Richard Lewis, Sue Polcer,

Rachel Husta and Al Olivero. Dat shit toit. Local gadabout John Cooke was there to do two things. First, to snap one of the best pictures of me ever taken. Second, to see if he had successfully goaded Anne Hathaway into coming to the show to sing a song. (She famously attended a Terry O’ke show at Martini Beach in July, 2008 and is an excellent singer, as evidenced by her Oscar-winning work in Les Miserables, which I’m sure she considers a close second to her performance of “Suddenly I See” at Terry O’ke.) Anne was in town to see mom Kate in Sylvia at Cape May

Stage, which I hear was excellent. This was preceded by a predictably excellent O’Brien & Joyce gig at the Rusty Nail, where the Three Marys from Delco arrived, took three seats directly in front of the stage, and settled in for a Bastard Sons of Captain Mey show. They were mildly-but-good-naturedly disappointed. I explained that, sure, the BSOCM may be younger than us, sure they may be better looking than us, sure they may be better musicians than us, and sure… what was I saying? It was here, rudely interrupting my cigarette break, that Pete and Lorraine Baldwin gifted me with a nifty Beatles Fun Kit (complete with certificate of authenticity) from 1965 or so. I told Pete, “If this thing’s worth 10 grand I’m not giving it back.” He said he’d already checked, it’s worth 40 bucks. So… thank you for the thoughtful gift you were comfortable parting with after checking eBay. (Just kidding, it’s an awesome gift and I really appreciate it.) So I said “Sweep the leg!” into the mic much to the enjoyment of the guy wearing

the Cobra Kai T-shirt, who then confessed to being a How I Met Your Mother fan but was somehow unaware that William Zabka was Barney Stinson’s hero and was the REAL hero of The Karate Kid and… looking back at that sentence, it reads like Pop Culture Mad Libs and I apologize. Mike, Matt, Melinda and the rest of the Ohio Contingent followed me from acoustic at the Nail to Terry O’ke at Carney’s and, let me tell you something, they get real competitive about their karaoke out there in Ohio. Especially the siblings. When will the world realize karaoke contests destroy families! Days Without Smoking: 1, but expected to shoot right up there. Tim and I (O’Brien and Joyce) spent the better part of our week playing Exit Zero Filling Station — Wednesday for a Cape May Brew Co. event, Thursday for EZFS’s first birthday, Saturday for our regular gig. Which reminds me, HAPPY BIRTHDAY EXIT ZERO FILLING STATION! May you live long enough for Jack Wright to pay off his mortgage. Four out of five O’Briens agree it’s the best place to work. This would be five out of five but the fifth isn’t old enough to work. No one was sure how live music would go over at EZFS, if it was a live music kind of place. But turns out people have been digging it. I have to admit, it’s pretty cool when 50 people eating dinner all stop to sing the chorus of “Country Roads” together. Rob King, whom I have dubbed “Prince” as he is the younger brother of Stellar Mojo front man Jon King, makes what might be the best brick oven pizza in Cape May (Carney’s). Last night he whipped me up a pulled pork jawn that made me sad when there was none left. God bless you, Rob, you’re doing the Lord’s work. Again this week, several people stopped me out of the blue to tell me how much they like and/ r get annoyed at my column, and again I forgot to write down your names. Still, thank you very

August 8, 2019 much. It’s always nice to hear that something I’ve written has entertained/annoyed you. Keep that shit up. I also got a couple of compliments on my experimental new beard. It’s like a regular beard, only awesome-er. Had to go solo on my Exit Zero delivery run this week as my partner called out sick. (Actually, his mother called him out sick and actually my partner is son Henry). This bummed me out because it meant more work for me but also because I love hanging with my boy in the wee hours dreaming up NBA trade scenarios where the 76ers can get Kevin Durant AND Russell Westbrook AND James Harden and not have to give up all that much. Pretty sure they don’t read my column at Ostara’s because I’m still welcome there. Been meeting a lot of people from Pittsburgh at my gigs this summer. When did we start allowing people from Pittsburgh? By the time you read this I will probably already be finished the new Robert Crais Elvis Cole novel and if you aren’t I feel sad for you. Except for Dean Bloemer, who continues his blasphemous claims that John Sandford is better. I’m currently finishing The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn and, although it bears many similarities to Gone Girl, Girl on the Train and Into the Water, I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Here’s where you can catch me involved in various shenanigans this week: O’Brien & Joyce Thursday at Mayer’s Tavern, 7-10, Friday at Harpoons on the Bay (DEBUT GIG!), 6-10, Saturday at Exit Zero Filling Station, 6-10, and Monday at Rusty Nail, 4-8. Saturday 10-2 is a Love Me Dudes Beatles show at The Ugly Mug (yeah yeah yeah!) and Sunday is The Terry O’Brien Band at Carney’s, 9-1. Tuesday is Terry O’ke at Carney’s, 9-1. I know it’s difficult to read that in paragraph form, but I can’t find anywhere to take out an ad… ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Exit Zero Filling Station Ambush Come get gas at our place and you might just get lucky!

It’s a pleasant experience getting gas at Exit Zero Filling Station. Our smiling faces, the cool vibe. Now there’s even more reason. This year we are giving away to random drivers a discount to enjoy at one of the top restaurants, stores, salons or activities, courtesy of the fabulous Exit Zero Discount Deck! If you don’t know what this is, you oughta! We also call it Vacation in a Box because it contains 50 great discounts to one of your favorite Cape May places — from $3 off fudge to $15 off dinner. It’s the real deal, and it only costs $20 for the entire pack. This week we bumped into Scott Eaby from Lancaster, PA who was filling up before his trek back home. We asked him to pick a card from the deck to enjoy. He picked out a $5 discount to Coffee Tyme. Who would he like to share it with? His wife Jan.

The Old Fogey

S

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

orry, folks, but Cape May is full up. The one millionth visitor of the season was counted arriving yesterday at 4.06pm, and that means we have used up our quota of outsiders, as defined in the “We Don’t Like Too Many Strangers, Less’n They’re Prepared To Spend Gold” law of 1852. The change was not immediately noticeable, as we are keen not to exclude those people willing to part with gold at a rate of no less than one dollar per minute, for at least 12 hours of the day. A variety of scanners are hidden around town for this purpose. These range from powerful X-ray machines and weighbridges under the sidewalk, to a horde of “Artful Dodger” pickpockets who are legally empowered to lift the purses/wallets/jewelry of randomly selected targets. This gives us a sample from which we can base some smart statistics, and also deposits several hundred wallets into the coffers, not to mention the occasional splendid watch. Those guests displaying what I call the Scotchman attitude to spending here, are not generally snatched off the sidewalk and deposited in the canal (as used to happen, until ships

reported trouble navigating the passage for all the sputtering, complaining waterlogged Shoebies) but are gently targeted by subliminal ads and apparently random encounters with “other visitors” who are in fact Excess Men, who will mutter such things as, “Say! You look like a chap who loves a bargain! Did you know you can eat all you like in Wildwood, for under a dollar?” Obviously, should all else fail, we have our Shuffle Mob, a trained group of people whose training is aimed at changing people’s “status” (as one of my annoying great-great-grandchil-

Find Your Way Back...

dren calls it) from “in Cape May” to “Not in Cape May” without them necessarily noticing. The trick is, a dozen nice people fall into step with the no-longer-welcome visitor, smiling and taking their arms, draping a comely hand around a shoulder, gently hitching a thumb under a belt loop, and start agreeing with any and everything the person says, whilst wafting them past the city limits. Obviously, loose change is carefully removed from their person at the same time, along with any items of clothing that we judge to be inappropriate to their body shape of the decade we find ourselves in (the exception being spats — spats are always in fashion) and replace the offensive item with a nice cardigan, or a jaunty hat, for example. This will be invoiced for later, of course. Another alternative is to expand the geographical size of Cape May, so we are less congested. We can, if necessary, widen the canal overnight, in the out-of-town direction, whilst surreptitiously filling in our side. By my calculations, we can be halfway to Atlantic City before anyone notices, let alone complains about suddenly being part of this dazzling city@

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Tai Chi

ake some time this summer to celebrate your summer body — not the body someone else thinks you should have. Celebrate the actual human form you are spending your summer in, whatever condition it is in, right this minute. Marvel at the things that work — maybe your ears pick up the crashing waves, or your eyes notice the glint of sun on the water, or your feet carry you up the steps of the lighthouse. Marvel, too, at the accommodations you make for your non-working parts. Then, treat your whole summer body to something new - the ancient art of tai chi. Tai chi, or, more fully, Tai Chi Chuan, “supreme ultimate boxing,” evolved from an ancient form of self defense. Generally, tai chi involves dance-like movements which flow into each other in a set form. Beginning from a slight crouch, you twist, reach and turn in orchestrated sets, which can have as many as eight movements or as many as 150. The slow, smooth movements use the principles of Qigong, or “breath skill.” There are many forms, including some that use weap-

ons like swords or staffs. According to legend, tai chi was created in the 13th century by Zhang San Feng, who developed it while watching a snake battle a crane. Tai chi has been practiced in China for at least 800 years, often by healthy young warriors. The exercise gained popularity in the West about fifty years ago, when doctors noted its benefits for unhealthy, older warriors - patients with heart disease, Alzheimers, fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s and more. For elderly people who have suffered a fall, tai chi is especially useful because it improves balance and strength, giving patients the ability to

recover from the next stumble. In addition, studies show that people who practice tai chi walk more quickly and take more steps than their peers. It’s not a calorie-blasting workout, though you’ll note that regular practitioners look fit. Instead, it’s a moving meditation. You’ll focus on your breathing and your body’s movements for the length of each set, and find that your haven’t thought about your endless to-do list since the class began. The City of Cape May Recreation Department offers a variety of group exercise classes for locals and visitors. No registration is required and admission is $5. Classes are held on the Convention Hall deck or on the beach below. Tai chi is offered Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30am. Beach yoga is also available, on Saturday and Sunday at 8am, Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:30am, and Tuesday nights at 7. Call 609-884-9565 for more information. And if you are looking for that calorie blast, consider the classes at the Lafayette basketball court. Visit www. hold-onfitness.com for information.

The Movie Column

The latest “Spider-Man” reviewed by arts columnist Tom Sims

Y

ou’ll see, Peter. People... need to believe. And nowadays, they’ll believe anything.” So says the newest and possibly the most quotable character from the Marvel universe, Mysterio, in the latest superhero film Spider-Man: Far from Home. This latest iteration of the web-slinger’s escapades really stays true to the first appearance in comic book storyline of a troubled teenager turned hero. Okay, maybe casting Marisa Tomei as “poor old Aunt May” was maybe not as true to the comic book — but come on, it’s Marisa! Tom Holland returns as Spidey in the second installment of this third reimagining. Confused? This is the third time the cast and crew (and feel) has been changed up completely for the hero. So far, the portrayal by Holland has been exceptional — the smaller, cocky but inexperienced teenager Peter Parker is in the original I remember from early comic books. Jake Gyllenhaal steals the show (at least his half) as the new caped crusader who

helps to fight giant destructive forces who have invaded Earth as the four elements. The water monster is particularly threatening bringing fluid havoc in the one place that would probably feel it most: Venice! Peter and his classmates are on a summer field trip in Venice as the water monster rises from the tide! They name the new costumed battler in green with a dome head “mysterious” and borrowing a little from Italian, the call him Mysterio. Another quote from him: “It’s easy to fool people

when they’re already fooling themselves.” I’m not going to say this film elevates to the highest peak set by other flicks from Marvel. There have been others that I’ve felt more. But it works in many ways. It doesn’t take itself so seriously. Sometimes it dances on the border of trite, but in the end, it’s as bold as a darker, more ominous story. In general it’s a crowd pleaser. At times, I felt like I was watching a James Bond movie or one of the Mission:Impossible films. It was that much of a globetrotter. More importantly, there were hi-tech moments and otherwise outlandish stretches that made me feel like I was watching a spy mystery mega-adventure as well as superhero movie. In the universe of summer fun flix, this is top rated. Join Cape May Film Society August 24 at West Cape May Borough Hall for the film 20 Feet from Stardom featuring the stories of legendary background singers like Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fisher, Claudia Lennear and Judith Hill. Read more here in this column about that feature soon.

CANCER: Someone will steal your parking space on Carpenters Lane. A flock of seagulls will create abstract art on their windshield. LEO: You will watch an ominous thunderstorm roll in over the horizon while eating at Iron Pier. It will be so captivating you will order an extra round of lollipop wings and short rib grilled cheese. he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My granddaughter starts her freshman year at college in two weeks and I have offered to fly with her to the school and get her settled in, but she asked me if her boyfriend could come and I am not happy about that and have told her so. She accused me of not liking him and said he should be treated like any other member of the family. I asked her mother about it, and she said, “It’s up to you.” My granddaughter is driven and stubborn, as is her mother and I don’t want a confrontation, but I am determined that this be a trip with just the two of us. It may be the last time I can spend this much time with her. Do you think I’m being too inflexible? — Determined Mimi Dear Determined The Answer Lady thinks you are dead right. It also sounds as though her mother has trouble

Wise answers to perplexing questions

saying no and dumped that task on you. Take her to the Mad Batter for brunch and explain it this way — this is family time and lo, though she may look at her boyfriend as “family,” he is not. Tell her you want this to be a special time and you do not want your attention divided in any manner except to focus on her and sending her off in style. But don’t be surprised if said boyfriend finds himself a seat on the plane not far from you. By the way, where are his parents? Dear Answer Lady I am having trouble with my 12-year-

old son acting out; hanging out with questionable friends; and generally pulling away from the family. It started this summer when he found his new friends. He’s very bright and very talented and I fear if we don’t do something now to steer him in the right direction, he might be lost to us in just a couple of years. I’ve tried talking to him, but he just shrugs me away and turns to his video games — which he spends too much time on. Can you help me out? — Worried Dad Dear Dad One word — sports. Find one he likes. Sign him up for everything until he settles into something. Sports are fabulous problem solvers, especially for high-energy boys. If he is not the athletic type, sign him up for karate lessons, which are beneficial to everyone. Sports teaches such wonderful life lessons. Music and the arts are another avenue. Give him a reason to get up in the morning other than the usual. Take a bike ride to the Cape May Point State Park for a picnic and talk it over.

Bird Droppings

L

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ate summer in Mauricetown and the air rings with the strident food begging whistle of newly fledged Osprey, hounding their exhausted parents. The whistles will continue through August, until the adults call it quits, say “good luck, kid,” and call it a season. Next stop. Amazon Basin. Fifty years ago, the sky over Mauricetown was bereft of Osprey. Blame DDT for that. But that’s old news. The new challenge? Climate change. It’s going to impact all creatures whose lives are wedded to coastal environments. It’s going to affect salinity, fish populations, and this will impact fish-eating birds. So watch the Osprey, once again our canary in the coal mine. Right now Osprey are still producing 2-3 young per nest. When we start seeing 0-1 young per nest, we’ve got a problem. Shorebirds, too are going to face challenges. Shorebirds like coastal environments where water and land meet. This wouldn’t be a problem if shorelines were simply allowed to migrate as sea levels rise. The problem is

our species has a vested interest in stabilizing coastal areas to protect property. Bulkheads and even offshore sand pumped onto beaches means bad news for shorebirds. The beaches of South Cape May were bolstered by sand pumped from deeper waters a few years ago. Sanderling, those small sandpipers that play tag with the waves, generally avoid this stretch of beach, now. Likely because the beach no longer supports the marine invertebrates Sanderling feed upon. Not all sandpipers like sand. Many are

mudpipers, preferring the invertebrate rich flats exposed at low tide. It’s harder to assess the impact that rising sea levels have on these species, but estimates are that many shorebird species have declined by up to 70% since the 1960s. So, there you have it. We may well be at the beginning of another systemic crisis. And once again, it will be birds of prey that call out the alarm. Or not. As some genius once observed: “Silence is so accurate.” Today, it’s bright and sunny, young Osprey are calling to be fed, and tens of thousands of migrating shorebirds are winging toward Cape May beaches, trusting that the food they need to sustain them will be there. They do not breed here, many will not winter here, but Cape May is a critical stepping stone from way up there to way down there. Sand, after all, is just very mature stone. But lets just not stick our heads in it, as we humans tend to do. You don’t believe in climate change? Ours will be the last generation to enjoy that luxury.

KISKA is a young black, white, and gray beauty who was found wandering and brought to the shelter. She loves to run in the yard but quickly returns to her human for a quick pat. Kiska would be comfortable in a family that is familiar with husky traits and would keep her exercised and active. Adopt this beautiful lady today!

DREAM is a beauty whose name truly reflects her personality. She came to the shelter with her housemate when her owners could no longer care for them. Her piercing blue eyes hold your attention as you walk through the shelter and she wears a perpetual grin. Dream would be a wonderful, companion for a family that is looking for an active, big girl.

TESSA is a three year old who arrived at the shelter as a stray; however, her owner contacted the shelter soon afterwards and relinquished her saying that he could no longer care for her. According to the owner, Tessa lived with cats and another dog as well as older children. Tessa is a bit shy in the beginning but quickly warms up and leans in for petting. Adopt today!

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

CLEO has fallen on some bad luck. She was originally brought into the shelter in 2015 after she was abandoned outside. She was then adopted and had a loving person for several years. Unfortunately, her owner passed away recently and she had to come back to the shelter. Cleo is a little sad to be back in a cage and would love to find her new family.

ROMEO is a very special kitten. He has a condition called cerebellar hypoplasia. That’s a really big word that means he walks kinda funny. It doesn’t bother him at all, he still loves to be hugged and snuggled. There are plenty of those ordinary kittens, you should pick someone different like Romeo. Come meet this snuggly little lover today!

WAFFLES came to the shelter and got checked out by the doctor and found out she has a pretty bad heart murmur. The good news is they said maybe she could grow out of it, but only time will tell. In the meantime, she’s waiting here at the shelter. But waffles would be much happier if she had a home and a family instead of living in a cage.
