Backyard Fun At Farmers Market The West Cape May Farmers Market is a celebration of this area’s beautiful produce (they don’t call us the garden state for nothing) and the storied agricultural history of this island. Now in its 18th season, the market runs every Tuesday through August 27 in the Backyard Park behind Borough Hall on Broadway from 3pm-7:30pm. In addition to the fresh produce, each event features live music (next up, the Cape May Roots) as well as baked goods, craft vendors and clothing. We’ll see you there! Right: Adam, Callie, Malia, Jason, Skylar, Lindsey. More photographs inside and in next week’s issue!

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS
Weird Sea Creature
Did You Know?
The Marbled Stargazer, also known as the Pop-Eye Fish, gets its name from the positioning of the eyeballs on top of the head. He buries himself deep in the sand so that just these eyes and a mouth are visible. Then he waits for smaller fish to pass before electrocuting them via a special pouch between the eyes that release 50 volts at a time.
Because we’re located at the tip of a peninsula, Cape May is one of the few places in the world where the sun both rises and sets over saltwater. Cape May’s sunsets are so beautiful partly because the air is so clean here. (Pollution in the atmosphere can mute vibrant colors.) Large storms can also lead to beautiful sunsets. Clouds on the back end of a departing weather system serve as a projector screen, helping reflect striking colors our way. In the fall, Cape May’s sunsets are even more spectacular. That’s because the air tends to be a little dryer, meaning there’s fewer moisture particles to scatter those red and pink wavelengths before they reach the human eye.

Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week
E
very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Louisa’s Café in the historic, sunny building on Jackson Street. You know it as the place that, 30 years ahead of its time, launched the farm-to-table movement on Cape Island. The vibe: So cute, so quaint, so clean and so happy. Think chalkboard menus, fresh flowers and a childlike whimsy. The whale: Inflatable. And located in the tub of the upstairs bathroom. The waitress: Brenda Roth. She worked at Louisa’s when she was just a 15-year-old kid, washing dishes and making apps alongside fellow kid, Will Riccio. Now, Will is owner at Louisa’s and Brenda is your lovely, knowledgeable server. The philosophy: It’s all about simple, honest food prepared simply and honestly. Imagine real, fresh, local ingredients that are allowed to shine on their own — no gussying up necessary. Will sources produce and herbs from Beach Plum Farm in West Cape May, and he sources fish from, well, right here. The apps: Like the derriere of a Kardashian sister, the tomatoes in the tomato, feta cheese and red onion salad are impossibly plump. Unlike the derriere of a Kardashian sister, these tomatoes are all natural. (Badum-ching!) Can we get an amen for the miraculous soil of the southern Cape! For some summer comfort food, we also ordered the cajun crab soup. Chef’s kiss. The entrees: We opted for the sautéed flounder with dill horseradish and the pan-seared grouper with tomato, mint and peach salsa. And we are happy to report that we have exceptional taste. Fun fact about the main dishes? You can swap the sauces. The desserts: We’d never tell a person what to do. Okay, who are we kidding? Order one of Louisa’s homemade desserts, and that’s an order! We went for the chocolate pie complete with orange and apricot glaze, plus a peach-and-blackberry crumble. Did we need dessert? No, we didn’t. The takeaway: Simple never tasted so good.

This week, Denise Randazzo from The Rusty Nail and E.M. Hemingway’s is up. How long have you been bartending? Eight years. Favorite drink to make? An old fashioned because it’s a classic cocktail that I know how to make well. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers interrupt other customers when I’m talking to them. How rude! Dream job? A nurse.
Beer Of The Week Cape May Brewing Co Takes Two To Mango - ABV: 6% Kettle-Soured Mango Shake IPA That’s a lot of buzz-worthy beer terms. Juicy, soft, full-bodied and rich, Takes Two to Mango is sour and tart, sweet and luscious, hoppy and fruity and seductively intriguing. Is it a dessert? Is it a beer? It doesn’t matter! Just drink it, and let beer be your dessert tonight.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
aybe this column is sometimes painful to read, but this week it’s painful to write as Sunday night I did a thing to my left wrist that makes me want to chop it off and type one-handed for the rest of my life. (There’s a “Terry’s watching porn” joke in here that I’m too classy to make.) On top of this, after all my shit-talking about my invincible voice, it gave way Monday at the Rusty Nail, where every song was officially the “Joe Cocker Version.” There’s nothing worse than being the World’s Greatest Singer and not being able to sing. Fortunately, my wing man, Tim Joyce, was there to pick up the slack. Yes, this meant living through the hell that is Tim singing 47 Jimmy Buffet songs, but sore throat beggars can’t be sore throat choosers. That’s a saying, isn’t it? My summer of five gigs a week and recent gamut of 21 gigs in 19 days finally caught up to me. What can I say? I’m somewhat human. Not human were the incredible crowds we drew, starting at Mayer’s Tavern on Thursday, continuing into Harpoon’s on
the Bay on Friday, carrying on through Exit Zero on Saturday, plowing into my Love Me Dudes show at the Ugly Mug LATER on Saturday, an amazing audience at Carney’s for the Terry O’Brien Band on Sunday, culminating in what was probably our biggest crowd of the season at the Nail on Monday. I love and appreciate all of you who take time out of your week to support my various musical concerns. I’m currently suffering through a bout of Imposter Syndrome, where I feel like I don’t deserve all the love that has been shown to me and mine, but I
will continue to accept it. Special thanks to Brady Shroen… Brady Scheron… Brady Schoer… special thanks to Brady for booking us at Harpoon’s, our first, hopefully not last, gig there. And to Michelle and Steve Bistak and assorted husbands, wives (and lovers) for hanging out. You all know that Herb Moore is one of the world’s finest guitar players (if you don’t know this, be sure to check out him and Love Me Dudes bassist Terry Dougherty Saturday nights on the Congress Hall veranda), but who knew his son Henry was one of the world’s finest keyboard players? Henry filled in with the Dudes on Saturday and is probably too good for that band but don’t tell him that or else he’ll want more money. Thank you, Henry! And thank you Herb, for creating him. Well, half of him anyway. Local gadabout John Cooke ventured in to Carney’s on Sunday for our Bruce Springsteen set. John is one of the ambassadors of Cape May, always using his social media for good and not evil, and helpfully pointed out all the hot chicks who were digging me. We

then had a brief conversation about wedding rings and how they get heavier the closer you get to Mount Doom. He’s my Frodo! Or maybe my Gollum. Only time will tell… On break at Carney’s I stepped outside for some fresh air (okay, a cigarette), and Earth’s Largest Moth landed on my shoulder. I mean, I could feel it tugging on my shirt like it wanted to drag me off to its lair. This thing had a dog in its mouth. I eventually got it to dismount, no thanks to Rob King, who just laughed at me as I flailed about. He’s lucky he makes a great brick oven pizza… Showed up to my Filling Station gig on Saturday and hostess Layla Freeman, a fine young lady who is attending Rowan University this fall with my son Owen and I hope they fall in love and get married because she’s awesome but I’m probably embarrassing them both right now so I’ll stop, told me “Gayle says hello.” Gayle who, she didn’t know. So if you’re the Gayle that told Layla to tell me hello, um, hello. (Stalkers, amirite?) Days Without Smoking: Got up to 4.5 this week before crumbling Sunday night. I’ll try to do better this week. Honest. If you’ve read more than two of my columns you probably know that Robert Crais is one of my all-time favorite authors. His newest Elvis Cole and Joe Pike novel came out this week and if you haven’t read any of Robert Crais’ Elvis Cole and Joe Pike novels you should stop what you’re doing and remedy that RIGHT NOW. Anyway, he shared a photo on Facebook from a book signing in Michigan, I replied, “Come to Cape May!”, and shortly after got a notification that “Robert Crais liked your post.” So we’re basically best friends now. Reminds me of the time my favorite sci-fi author, Orson Scott Card, wrote a blurb for my book. Remember that time I had a book? I’ve seen Once Upon a Time in Hollywood twice in the last
August 15, 2019 week. It is that rarest of things, a hopeful Tarantino movie. Leonardo DiCaprio is great, but Brad Pitt slyly steals the show. I highly recommend, but brace yourselves for the last 10 minutes. Also binged on The Boys on Amazon Prime, which is like The Avengers if it was written and directed by, well, Quentin Tarantino. And if you haven’t watched both seasons of Fleabag on Amazon, do it right after you finish reading every Robert Crais novel. I’d like to wish a happy birthday to my youngest son, Henry, who turns 14(!) today, August 15. Like his older brothers Owen and Jackson, he has ignored my pleas to avoid going into showbusiness and is on his way to becoming quite the piano player. He’s a good boy, a great dude and my best friend. The four hours we spend delivering Exit Zero all over Cape May County on Thursday mornings are the best four hours of my week and I love him something awful. (I’m not crying YOU’RE crying.) So Henry, keep on keeping on, and please show up for work at the Filling Station at 8am on Monday. Lastly this week, a goodbye. Roy Baker was a good man. A local titan. I guested on Living Room Sessions a couple of times (co-hosted by the lovely Liz Shay) on 101.5, and made sure to never ask him a question to which I did not want an honest answer. A meticulous listener. If he gave you praise you earned it. Instrumental in cultivating the current, thriving open mic scene in Cape May. I’ll miss his wit and knowledge, but I’ll mostly miss him exhaling into his microphone when a guest pushed him to exasperation, the Richie Ashburn of Cape May. Peace to Donna, Shannon, Chris and those beautiful babies. I would ask him to rest in peace, but I know he’ll do no such thing. See you on the other side, Roy. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
adore American Leopard Dogs. This in no way detracts from my abiding loyalty to Yorkshire Terriers, whose-ferocity-t0-weight ratio is the highest of any animal on Earth. Anyone who has ever rubbed Young Albert the wrong way, (figuratively or literally) by calling him “good boy”, or tickling him under the chin, to name but two triggers, will attest to this. Usually whilst shrieking and running down the street with what looks to be a russet goatee attached to their top lip. But I encountered a Leopard Dog last week, when out “jogging” (as I believe the young ones call it). I was proceeding along the beach at a fast rate of knots, my day-glo orange short shorts shining like the sun, when I saw the beast keeping pace along the dunes. I took the animal to be a hyena, such was its lope and spotted pelt, and tried to remember where the closest weapons stash was (as you know, we in the Cape May Militia are fond of storing interesting armaments in case of the collapse of society. We do not use maps, for reasons of security, which is at the same time smart and very stupid). Well, I ran right off the end of The Point, and swam to
the Concrete Ship, where I swiftly unboxed what I had imagined was a panzerfaust taken from the Nazis when I stormed Hitler’s Bunker, but was in fact a 12-pounder canon. I fired off a round anyway, which missed the presumed hyena, and bounced off across the beach. Imagine my surprise when the hyena barked happily and fetched it, swimming capably out to the ship and dropping it at my feet. Well, various expert signs came to me that suggested it was not in fact a hyena. The density of fur on its spine was too low, the spread of its
Find Your Way Back...
paws too wide, and the spacing of the canines too regular. Also, the name tag declaring Fonzie on the rather nice collar was a hint. Not to mention that hyenas have not been seen in Cape May since 1897, when some deranged mental patients from Wildwood (otherwise know as Wildwooders) released all of the animals. Luckily for us, if not the hyenas, Ernie Hemingway was in town that weekend, along with his dueling pistols. He had intended to use them to settle a few scores, but thankfully, he spent all his lead ammunition facing down the hyena pack in Martini Beach. Well, clearly it would have been the height of bad manners to reload and shoot Fonzie, and so instead I took him home to the address on his tag, where a charming immigrant family (they hailed from Philly) greeted him joyfully, and thanked me for rescuing him. Obviously, I feigned great puzzlement when he dropped the damned cannonball on the floor. But when they asked “where DID you get that, Fonzie?” he merely gave me a knowing glance and barked in a manner that suggested he would discuss it no more.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, breakfast like a pirate
mall wonder that children want to be pirates. From a five-year-old’s perspective, a pirate’s life looks very inviting. Sail where you want, when you want; spend your days climbing and sword fighting; sleep in a hammock. What could be better? They aren’t entirely wrong. Although some crew members were forced into piracy, many joined the trade because life was better under the Jolly Roger. Sailors on regular ships were subject to harsh conditions, including contaminated food, arbitrary corporal punishment, and a rigid class structure. Questioning a capricious captain — who might have bought his commission and have little navigational skill — could lead to a charge of mutiny. Pirate ships, on the other hand, offered a primitive democracy with elected captains, more generous food rations, profit sharing, and a quartermaster to mediate disputes. The captain was in charge during a raid, but the rest of the time he was just another member of the crew. Most pirates — with notable exceptions — preferred to use
intimidation instead of actual violence to rob their victims. Piracy also disrupted the slave trade by capturing slave ships. Because they could not risk interacting with slave markets, pirates often freed the slaves or invited them to join their ranks. Race was no barrier to success in the pirate world — Blackbeard’s second-in-command was an African. Piracy is, at its heart, still a vicious occupation, but don’t worry about making heroes out of murderous thieves. Kids need imaginative play, complete with bad guys. Imaginary battles give them confidence to tackle the battles in their own lives. Experts
say pirate play is a healthy way for kids to pretend, and an easy way for parents to find teachable moments. Pirate stories offer opportunities for crafting — model ships, tinfoil weapons, eye patches and maps. They offer lessons in geography and history. Pack oranges and bananas in the sea chest and teach about scurvy. Practice math by dividing some booty. Promote teamwork by renaming household chores — swabbing the deck, fixing the sails, and scraping barnacles sound more exciting than mopping the floor, folding the towels and washing windows. Kick off your family’s pirate adventure with breakfast, a story, and a treasure hunt on Tuesday, August 20 at the Emlen Physick Estate. Admission is $20 for adults and $18 for children ages 3 to 12. Call 609-884-5404 for more information. On August 24 and 25, join in the swashbuckling fun at Historic Cold Spring Village. Tickets start at $14. Their Seafarer’s Weekend will include a pirate training, including jokes and lessons about life at sea, a treasure hunt, sea shanties, and a “cannon load of fun.”

The Theater Column
Cape May Stage’s new show “Sidekicked” reviewed by Sally Galbraith
C
louds gathered over Cape May this week while the world premier of Sidekicked brewed a perfect storm of talent inside the Robert Shackleton Playhouse. The one-woman show starring Sally Mayes was crafted by so many talented theatrical professionals that each deserves an individual review. When playwright Kim Powers chose to write about Vivian Vance he was fascinated by her nearly career-shattering breakdown, actually the beginning of her television stardom. Powers is the senior writer for ABC’s 20/20 and has received two Emmys for his work on the program. He has just been nominated for a third. His love for I Love Lucy and its supporting actress is evident in this production. Sally Mayes plays Vivian Vance. The wig she dons for this performance magically transforms her. Designed by Hamilton hair and wig designer Charles LaPointe, it casts a spell. The real magician is Mayes, whose talented performance encompasses all the principal voices of Vance’s life: Lucy, Desi, William Frawley, and, of course, Ethel Mertz. This tour de force is
seamless, entirely believable, and time goes by so quickly! It’s the shortest 75 minutes I have ever spent at the theater. Director Roy Steinberg is very excited to bring this new play to Cape May Stage. He elicits a performance both poignant and funny. Also noteworthy is the final letter written by Vance to Lucille Ball, displayed in the lobby following the show. Tony winner Jess Goldstein’s costumes feature the chenille robe Mayes wears for most of the play. Preparing for her entrance, she changes into a housedress that does not quite hide the glamour of Vivian peeking through
Ethel’s frumpiness. Nice touch. No wonder Ball saw her as a rival. Set designer Spencer Potter creates pleasant disarray in Vance’s dressing room for the final taping. Vance is speaking to her therapist, Dr Steele. She bares her soul, from her difficult childhood, through her three marriages, to the climactic breakdown and her eventual fame. Vance’s fraught relationship with Ball figures heavily, as does her enmity with William Frawley, her TV husband Fred Mertz. Vance is tired of playing second banana. “I’ve been sidekicked to death.” Laughs and tender moments abound. Vance is preparing for her last show and packing her memorabilia — but not the treasured Emmy — portraying past scenes, including the breakdown. As she teetered on the brink, she wrote down her name and address in case she forgot who she was. When she goes through the door to to take her place onstage with Lucille one last time, we don’t see her as a second banana, but as a star. The show runs through September 20; more info at capemaystage.org.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have a problem. I have been flirting and sexting with my best friend’s boyfriend. Yesterday, she confided in me that she suspects there is someone else. I feel so guilty. I’ve broken off all communication with him and told him why, but feel so hypocritical giving her advice on what to do. Should I tell her? It will be the end of our friendship and I don’t want that. And it’s even more awkward when he’s around. — Two-Timer Dear Two-Timer Oh, what a tangled web we weave…. There is no question that you have to come clean. Yes, the friendship will most likely be over and there probably isn’t much hope for the two-timing beau either. The Answer Lady suspects it all started out very innocently and then escalated. To your credit, it remained an
Wise answers to perplexing questions
extreme flirtation, but still it affected the course of a relationship and for that you must take full responsibility. After you tell your friend, make sure you do something that will give you some healing help. Go to the Nature Center of Cape May and see about an Aqua Trails kayaking tour. Being on the water will give you time to reflect, plus the physical act of kayaking will help focus your thoughts so you can bring yourself back to a good place again. Dear Answer Lady My mother and I went back-to-school
shopping last week and it ended up in a huge fight. I know most guys aren’t this opinionated about clothes, but I’m very particular about what I wear. And my mother just wants what is cheapest. It’s my money. It’s why I worked all summer — well, part of the reason. Before this summer, it was always, “When it’s your money, you can do what you want. When it’s my money or your father’s, you’ll do what we want.” Okay, so now it IS my money and she’s still dictating what I wear. Is there a solution to this? — Clothes Conscious Dear Conscious There is no solution per se, but there is a word called compromise. Propose this: You agree to some of the clothing she suggests and she allows you to buy two outfits at your discretion. You might point out that in order for you to be a responsible adult, you need to start making some decisions with her guidance. If you maintain your temper, she will be impressed by your thoughtfulness and respect the effort you are making. If she does agree, The Answer Lady suggests a trip to Galvanic would be an excellent place to start.

Bird Droppings
O
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ne of the rarely mentioned benefits of being a bird watcher is the grounding it accords. The calendar year is marked by signature, touchstone events. Their arrival and our awareness affirms the ecological permanence of the world we live in, a direct challenge to the frenetic uncertainties that engage us at every turn. One such epic event is the annual gathering of Purple Martins in the marshes of the Maurice River near Mauricetown. The birds, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, gather here to fatten up for their flight to South America, where in the insect-rich skies over the canopy of the Amazon Basin, they will wait out the insect-impoverished northern winter. But first they have to get there. The point of this article is to advise you that the buildup is occurring and that, while the peak is still some weeks away, the hour before sunset finds a steady wave of birds heading east over Mauricetown, amid the cris-crossing flight pattern of local Chimney
Swifts, whose numbers, too are impressive. The martins are broad-winged gliders, the swifts resemble cigar butts set on slender, quivering wings. The problem with natural phenomena is its temporal nature. Now you see it, now you don’t. But that is also what makes natural spectacles special. Go at the right time to the right place and be WOWed. Arrive late and mark your calendar for next year. There is no set-in-stone date to see the most martins.
Adult birds mass in the first half of August, immatures come later. By early September, most of the birds will be gone and I have never seen a Purple Martin in New Jersey in October. The Mauricetown Riverfront Park offers a good safe viewing place, but there is no guarantee that the main roost will be near there, this year. The birds settle into the tall reeds lining the river at or near sunset and the prime roost site shifts year to year, sometimes above Mauricetown, sometimes south. Be that as it may, last evening several hundred birds were winging over Mauricetown, heading in the general direction of the bridge. What bridge? Oh right, you don’t live here. The only bridge crossing the Maurice River south of Millville. That bridge. The park is just south of the bridge, across from the Osprey nest. Remember: now you see them, now you don’t. Nature offers no rain checks. How far from Cape May, one hour, except on Sunday. Be there. Be affirmed. Bring binoculars.

KISKA is a young black, white, and gray beauty who was found wandering and brought to the shelter. She loves to run in the yard but quickly returns to her human for a quick pat. Kiska would be comfortable in a family that is familiar with husky traits and would keep her exercised and active. Adopt this beautiful lady today!
BELLA is a sweet 10 year old Border Collie who came to the shelter because her owner is ill. She lived with another dog (Jack- also at the shelter) and could blend into a family with another dog if a proper introduction was made. Be prepared to meet Bella on several occasions before taking her home. A quiet adult household is recommended. Come by!

REDS is a four year old boy with a perpetual smile. Whether he is watching potential adopters walk by his kennel or running in the yard, he is always smiling! Reds lived with a family but when his owner moved, there was no room for this big boy to go with them so he is at the shelter waiting for another family to adopt him. Meet Reds today!

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
CLEO has fallen on some bad luck. She was originally brought into the shelter in 2015 after she was abandoned outside. She was then adopted and had a loving person for several years. Unfortunately, her owner passed away recently and she had to come back to the shelter. Cleo is a little sad to be back in a cage and would love to find her new family.
ROMEO is a very special kitten. He has a condition called cerebellar hypoplasia. That’s a really big word that means he walks kinda funny. It doesn’t bother him at all, he still loves to be hugged and snuggled. There are plenty of those ordinary kittens, you should pick someone different like Romeo. Come meet this snuggly little lover today!
LAZLO is an all-around excellent cat. He is very friendly and loves getting attention. Lazlo is a senior cat with the heart of a kitten, and he will chirp at you when he wants you to pet him. Lazlo clearly had a family who cared about him at some point, but he was found outside as a stray. Can you offer this loving senior his forever home?
