Pure Paddle Power! The awe-inspiring Cape to Cape Challenge, put on by the DeSatnick Foundation, was held on August 18. Race participants (athletic, brave and, some would argue, crazy) rode the Cape May-Lewes Ferry to Delaware before navigating their standup paddle boards the 16 miles back across the mouth of the bay to Queen Street, New Jersey’s southernmost point. The event raised more than $30,000 for spinal cord injury victims and their families, and culminated with a well-earned after-party at Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille afterward. Congrats to all! Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

The Mexican Lookdown is an oddly shaped creature with a very steep forehead. It’s hard to miss from the side (that head is huge in profile), but the fish is so skinny that if you look at it straight on, it’s difficult to even see. The Mexican Lookdown uses this to its advantage, confusing predators simply by changing the direction of its swimming and changing size.

TRACEN Cape May, located on the harbor, is the only coast guard training center in the nation. There are 1,000 total military and civilian personnel employed at this base, which has an economic impact of $174 million on the county. At any given time, there my be as many as 960 recruits training on base, and over 4,000 will train here this year. Approximately 80 percent of the Coast Guard workforce begin their careers in Cape May.

The Dragonfly Sea By Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor This is a powerful coming-of-age story that focuses on a strong-willed girl from an island off Kenya. You won’t be able to put it down!

Here’s what the EZ team had for lunch this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. Where we ate: Homestyle to Go, the new takeout and quick bite spot in West Cape May. The occasion: We needed food for the beach, and we needed it quick. There will be no burning of daylight on Diane’s watch! The vibe: So casual and beachy, bright and clean. We particularly enjoy the Dawn Patrol mural which should speak to the surfing (or wannabe surfing) set. The food: A short rib sandwich, the fried shrimp po’ boy, and a mahi-mahi quinoa bowl with sautéed spinach, black beans, roasted red peppers and roasted corn. Plus a side of turkey salad and marinated olives we may or may not have eaten with our hands. Perfect beach food, all of it. Also, menu offerings change daily, based on what’s fresh. So you might discover a whole new set of options! The drinks: We consider ourselves seltzer water connoisseurs, and Homestyle To Go is the first place we’ve seen offering the Spindrift brand. It is the best we’ve had. This sparkling experience (heh, get it?) even inspired us to purchase 20 cases of the fizzy stuff online. We love all the flavors made with real fruit purée (we’re looking at you strawberry and grapefruit) but the last can of mango will inspire knock-down, blow-out fights. The beach: Cape May Point State Park. No, you’re not allowed to swim here. And, no, we will not tell you which one of us waited for the park rangers to drive their electric beach cart away so she could jump in. But she has an ocean addiction and the first step is admitting she has a problem. The conversation: It was minimal because Jack had discovered a new obsession: Sicilian-based novels detailing the exploits of an Inspector Montalbano, who is constantly preoccupied by eating and who gets lost VERY easily. Jack obviously recognizes a kindred spirit, even in fiction. The takeaway: Our beach days just got a whole lot better.

This week, Leo Moryakov from The Ebbitt Room is up. How long have you been bartending? 14 years. Favorite drink to make? An old fashioned because we put our own personal touch on it here. What’s your bartending pet peeve? I don’t have one. Yea, we still don’t believe you Leo! Dream job? I’d still be a mixologist but i’d like to work with different bars by creating new cocktails and bringing new ideas to their establishment.

Wine Of The Week Joe Canal’s Discount Liquor Store Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay Bright fruit aromas of kiwi, apple and white peach are followed by notes of toasted nuts and stone fruit, with touches of sweet oak and honeysuckle. This wine has balance from start to finish with a creamy and juicy mid-palate. Flavors of stone fruit and lime are accented with toasted nuts and barrel spice.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

bandon hope all ye who enter here. Tis through bleary eyes and a mushy brain that I write to you this week some 12 hours after the final Terry O’Brien Band gig at Carney’s on Sunday. The story of how this band originated is too dense to tell in this little space, but I found five other musicians (stalwarts Al Olivero, Rachel Husta and Sue Polcer, newcomers Dr David Bee and Richard Lewis) crazy enough to take a chance on a band that played ONLY The Beatles, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Prince, and a venue crazy enough to give us a chance. My appreciation for the opportunity Carney’s gave us knows no bounds. We didn’t know how the concept would go over, we only knew that our Beatles and Billy Joel tribute acts fared well over the years, but those are specialty acts that only play a few gigs a year. And THIS was EVERY SUNDAY NIGHT. FOR PEOPLE. We also didn’t know if we’d be any good, having amassed only four rehearsals before going live. But from night one, set one, song one we were embraced by

both locals and vacationers (although a few of those local grumbled at having to sit through Beatles and Billy before hearing the new stuff, which we remedied in subsequent weeks by tweaking the order; always listen to your customers. They’re the reason we’re here.) Anyway, some of the greatest moments I’ve had as a singer happened over the last 10 weeks. We have one more show coming up, Labor Day Monday, 3pm-7pm, an open mic jam to which I invite all my musician and non-musician friends to participate. You can play or sing anything from our set list, or just

play a couple tunes you feel like playing. We’re not picky. (Just bring your own instrument, that’s all we ask.) My friends, co-workers and world’s cutest couple, Sean Haggerty and Shannon Demirel, came to the show, which meant a great deal to me. I was wearing my supercool new Eagles T-shirt, which was grey but turning black with sweat. I asked Shannon, “Is this sexy or gross?” She said, “Definitely sexy.” So you may now expect me to wear only grey T-shirts that I sweat through. (Thanks again, guys. ean, you better learn a couple songs to play at the Labor Day open mic.) Soon-to-be Big Time Movie Director E.B. Hughes popped in to say hello before the show. His movie, Exit 0 (unrelated), is currently making the festival rounds and picking up tons of awards for the director and his actors. I, and a handful of other local folk, worked on this film and it’s pretty cool to see it doing so well. Though I hear it’s the incandescent star power of Man #2 that pulls the whole thing together. Big thanks to the Random Guy who

FOOD & DRINK

pulled me aside Sunday night to ask how my throat was feeling, having read last week about the toxic waste dumpster fire that was my voice. He also liked my line about every song that week being the “Joe Cocker Version.” It’s always nice to have someone quote something you, especially when it’s not followed with, “you asshole!” And, of course, it was awesome having my wife Cathrine and my sons Owen and Henry in the audience to cheer me on. I always sing good. I sing a little gooder when they’re there. The voice was in so-so shape this week. A nice couple from West Deptford noticed I was a little scratchy at the Rusty Nail, which preceded the Carney’s gig. They ask how I get through all these gigs, I told them I just keep showing up. And that Irish whiskey is a great numbing agent. For me and the audience. Sunday would have been a little scratchier if my acoustic partner, Tim Joyce, had shown up for our Exit Zero Filling Station gig on Saturday, WHICH HE DIDN’T! All the drugs and drink are really catching up to him, I suppose. (If you know Tim you’re laughing pretty hard at this. If you don’t know Tim, he’s never done a drug harder than Tylenol and is allergic to alcohol, the poor bastard.) Actually, his flight home from Texas was delayed several hours, causing him to miss our gig. He was there taking pictures of, I don’t know, steer or something. I’ve never really known what he does for a living. So, apologies to our fans who came out to see us, but we’ll be back this Saturday and play twice as good tro make up for it. And congratulations to EZFS, who seem to be setting new “guests served” records on the daily. Days Without a Cigarette: 0 at the time of this writing, but should be four by the time of this reading. Stay tuned for further thrilling updates. Correction of the Week: Thank you, constant Facebook heckler Blaze Damiani for point-

August 22, 2019 ing out my misspelling of Jimmy Buffett. (That’s some shoddy editing there.) Jimmy Buffett is a singer-songwriter. Jimmy Buffet is a place where you can go and choose from any one of 47 terrible Jimmy Buffett songs. Carney’s door man Kurt Seer, Sr took time on Tuesday night to rag on my beard, which I’ve been bragging on. I can only assume this is because his isn’t as thick and lustrous as mine. Jealousy can be so ugly… White Claw is the Zima of 2019, which itself was the Bartles and Jaymes of 1997. If you nominate me for one of those 10-Day Facebook Challenges, I will not only not accept, I will hate you the entire time I’m not doing it. Took my son Henry and a group of his friends over to the CapEscape escape room for his birthday the other day and I gotta tell you, those things are pretty cool. And exceedingly difficult to complete when your dad is blocking the exit. But seriously, support this small, family-owned, business. They’re on Bayshore Road in Villas. Which reminds, sometimes I like to have a little fun with the lyrics to songs I’ve sung 1,000 times. My new favorite is, “I was stranded in the combat zone, I walked through Villas Wawa alone, even rode my motorcycle in the rain…” And to the youngsters at the Rusty Nail, “Just find a place to not throw sand, and take it easy…” Those six-year-old mosh pits can get vicious. I finally did it! I finally beat the Shoppe guy on my delivery route! Sure, it took waking up at 2:30am with searing gas pain, not being able to fall back to sleep and going out at 3:30am, but dammit, I did it! Up next? The AC Press guy. I’m coming for you… As you can probably tell, I ran out of meaningful things to write about six paragraphs ago so I think I’ll just wrap it up here. Please continue to be the greatest readers in the world and I’ll keep on being the greatest writer! ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

W

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

e need a miniature ice age in Cape May. And by that I don’t mean the one we had in 1850, when the ocean froze, and we skated from The Point to Philadelphia. We need one that we can make ourselves, without waiting for those Washington buffoons. The thought came to me as I watched The Morbid Nature Channel, a subscription service that delivers the very best in horrific real-world environmental stories. Usually it features stupid people being consumed by smart animals, but this time it showed Greenland melting. Most of you could not place Greenland on a map. Or, come to think of it, Spain, Sweden or Atlantis. Greenland is a blob of land that measures close to a million square miles, with around 56,0oo unassuming people on it. It has traditionally been the home of that oaf Santa Claus and a trillion tons of ice. All of which seems to be melting (the ice, not Santa — that one has a heart of stone and only pretends to like children) and pouring into the ocean. By my calculations, our plan to slowly lift Cape May on stilts, at a rate of an eighth of an

inch a year, is now redundant. So, we will be going energy neutral — the electric cables will be snipped at the border with New Jersey, and every household will be supplied with a tiny windmill, a solar panel, and a little hydro-electric dam to place in their bath. Also, we will push forward the launch of our wondrous Organic Waste Composting Plant, into which will go anything organic that is neither needed nor welcome in Cape May, to compost and generate power as it does. One thing — make sure that if you are disposing of

Find Your Way Back...

stray libertarians, you remove belt buckles, as those clog the filters. That will not be enough, sadly. We need to instigate a powerful little ice age, and the iceberg I ordered from the Arctic Circle has been delayed as too many polar bears are hiding in it, in the hope of pouring out when they get here, and taking over Cape May. Why they did not just move to Wildwood like all the other wild ursines, is beyond me. So, I need all of you to open your refrigerator and freezer doors now, and leave them open. By my calculation, in a week, we will be feeling chilly, and in a month, it will start to snow. We will be the envy of the world, of course, and the resulting ski season will bring visitors in record numbers. I see no flaw in this plan, and encourage any of you who are naysayers or pessimists, to report to the Composting Plan for a swift remedial lesson in the Circle of Life. I am off now to steal ice cubes from The Brown Room, to be taken to the shoreline and hurled into the ocean. Every little helps, you know, so get to it!

C

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the spirits of Cape May

ape May has a reputation for spirits that go bump in the night. Ghosts like it here so there are ghost tours, and trolley rides dedicated to things spectral. Cape May is also famous for spirits of the liquid variety, home to distilleries and dozens of top notch bars and lounges. You’ll find team spirit aplenty when the Eagles return to the gridiron. But there’s another kind of spirit in Cape May — the kind you turn to when your soul needs repair. Sometimes the circle of life feels wobbly. The yin and yang that are supposed to balance — birth and death, dark and light, youth and age — is off kilter. It could be something huge, as when a glimpse of evil shatters your sense of safety or a freak accident destroys a young person. It could be something smaller, as a job loss or a failed romance. Even good news can shake you, like selling the family home or accepting a new job. Watching my grown children help to care for their grandparents is beautiful; watching them introduce themselves every visit is ugly. These are the times you need something extra to lean on.

Cape May’s residents and visitors have been seeking that extra support for centuries. The First Baptist Church had its beginnings among whalers who settled in Cape May in the 1600s. Catholics established a seasonal chapel in 1803. Methodist preachers visited the island as early as 1811. Presbyterians built their Visitors’ Church on Washington Street in 1844. The Macedonia Baptist Church was established in 1895. Wildwood’s Beth Judah Synagogue was founded in 1914. The spiritual side of Cape May is evident in charitable works, like the Crop Walk to feed the hungry, hosted by the Episcopalians, or

the Lutheran’s donation of property to help keep Cape May green. There are also special events, like the Wedding of the Sea held by Catholics to mark the Feast of the Assumption on August 15. A European tradition which includes a tossing a flower garland into the ocean, the Wedding of the Sea symbolizes the connection of the sea and the city, under the protection of God. In Beth Judah’s Shabbat on the Beach, on Friday, August 23, Rabbi Ron Isaacs will lead an uplifting service on the beach across from the Montreal Inn. Bring your beach chair and a vegetarian dish to share. In case of inclement weather, this event will be cancelled. Contact 609-522-7541 or bethjudahtemple@yahoo.com for more information. Find a list of area religious organizations at capemaycountychamber.com, or in This Week in Cape May magazine. Less traditional seekers may prefer the Bottomline Church at Utsch’s Marina or meditation meetups. Find tools like crystals or incense at Good Scents or Guardian, and don’t discount the power of a solitary beach walk.

The Movie Column

The documentary “20 Feet from Stardom” reviewed by arts columnist Tom Sims

W

hat goes into making a hit song? Lyrics? Of course. Catchy beat? Absolutely. Sometimes, though, what makes a hit is that voice you hear in the background. It’s the voice that rises above even the lead singer’s to provide wonderful harmonies and a beautiful sound experience. Your friends at the Cape May Film Society will screen the movie 20 Feet from Stardom at the West Cape May Borough Hall this Saturday, August 24 at 7pm. It tells the stories of the most successful and inspiring background singers. You don’t think of them much. But when they do their job perfectly — pitch perfectly — you recognize the hard work that goes into what they do. I can list names for you, but you wouldn’t recognize many of them. Yet they have been singing in the background on songs that you would consider classics! Merry Clayton? Never heard of her? But if you have ever listen to the Rolling Stones classic rock hit “Gimme Shelter”, you hear her singing with Mick Jagger. She’s in the background at first

— but she comes to the forefront and belts it out. And it gives you chills down your spine. “It’s just a shot away.” She sings it better than Mick. Many of these background vocalists have tried to make it on their own — and one was particularly successful. Luther Vandross went from background vocals to lead singer in a career that was marked by a number of wonderful hits. Others tried and weren’t as successful. There may be a reason for that.

There are many celebrities who speak during this documentary. Some of them leave you with a feeling that they didn’t give much mind to the background singers. And for that they looked maybe cold or foolish. One of the better celebrity presenters during the movie is Bruce Springsteen. He speaks about the reason some songs make it and others do not. It’s all about production, he says. And I couldn’t agree more. The more time that goes into how well a song is produced is equal to how successful it can be. Clayton is joined by Darlene Love, Lisa Fisher, Claudia Lennear and Judith Hill. You may not know the names, but you will know the songs! There is also vintage footage of performances and interviews with Springsteen, Sting, Jagger, Stevie Wonder and Bette Midler. What happened behind the scenes? And where are they now? Much is revealed about the music industry in this film — so much of it was waiting to be told. This film brings out true talent into the spotlight — finally and exactly where it belongs. See it this Saturday! Visit newnjstatefilmfestival.org for details.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My relatives from Italy visited two weeks ago and were supposed to stay with my sister who volunteered to host them and cook dinner. When I got there, there was no food and my sister “went out for the evening.” There was not even any food in the house. I had to order take-out — for Italians! Food is everything to my family. I hosted dinner the next night. Did not invite my sister; she came anyway and the relatives showed up with their luggage in hand. She said the AC went out. Here’s the thing — I would have gladly had them stay with me and would have gladly made dinner. My sister — who does not cook and when she does, it ain’t pretty — insisted. I’ve barely spoken to her since. I was so embarrassed. Before the relatives went back, my husband and I tried to make their stay as welcoming

Wise answers to perplexing questions

as they were to us when we visited Naples. To me there’s no forgiving my sister. My husband says it’s useless because she’ll never change. — Angry Sister Dear Angry Your husband is right. If there is a next time, try to circumvent your sister’s perhaps wellintentioned overtures. Maybe it seemed like a doable thing when she extended the invitation but the reality of it was overwhelming. It’s not worth the risk of a permanent rift. Let things cool down. Meanwhile, take a trip to Beach

Plum Farm on a Sunday. Have a little barbecue, have a glass of wine and enjoy the roosters. Dear Answer Lady My son and his girlfriend are coming for dinner Sunday. He has told me 10 times she’s a vegetarian. I am a hardcore carnivore and have no intention of changing my menu. My husband says I’m just trying to sabotage the romance and that it is proof that I am an “overbearing mother who will never cut the apron strings.” — Carnivore to the Core Dear Core This is not the problem you and your husband are making it. Stick with your planned menu. Go to Duckie’s or Central Park markets and buy a nice array of fresh vegetables. Sautée with a little olive oil, top with lemon juice and parmesan cheese. Serve over penne pasta and tada! A lovely side dish and dinner for the girlfriend. Don’t act risk alienating your son over a little thing like vegetables. And no snide comments either. She’s just a girlfriend now, but she could end up your daughter-in-law. You know how that old saying goes. Hint — it doesn’t bode well for the son’s mother.

Bird Droppings

M

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

y intent was to rise at 5:00am and pen a story about the sequence of birds awakening here in Mauricetown but, as always, it was the Chimney Swifts that stole the show. Aptly described by Roger Tory Peterson as “cigar buts on wings, these torpedo-bodied, scimitar-winged birds are built for speed. The swifts are of the fastest birds alive, in some cases attaining speeds in excess of 150mph in level flight. Staying power is another swift trait — the Common Swift of Europe is able to remain aloft for up to six months and may spend 10 months out of the year in the air. In pre-Columbian times, Chimney Swifts used to nest and roost in hollow trees. Audubon once saw 9,000 swifts descend into a roost tree near Louiseville, KY. But since the introduction of brick chimneys, Chimney Swifts have taken to nesting and roosting in these protective confine during the off-season, when the chimneys are not being used to vent smoke. Mauricetown has a surfeit of older homes whose chimneys are no longer in use. In conjunction with our

insect-rich skies, Mauricetown is an ideal habitat for swifts. Going aloft before sunrise, the birds are already cutting cookie cutter patterns in the sky by first light, a foraging pattern that continues until after sunset. I’ve seen as many as 10 swifts in view at once, not bad for birds not engaged in migration. Larger roosts than this have been found — many years ago, when I was director of Cape May Bird Observatory, I received a call from a Latina grandmother living in the Bronx at 6:30 on a Saturday morning. She

said, “Do you know about chimney swifts?” “A little,” I replied. But what interested me more was how an elderly resident from the Bronx was interested in swifts at all. “I saw them flying into a chimney,” she confided, “so I went to the Bronx Zoo and they told me what they were. And that if I went to Central Park, I would see Black Night-Herons (sic). A nice lady loaned me her binoculars. They were beautiful.” I was enthralled that even in a place as environmentally estranged as the Bronx, that birds have the power to captivate. “Do you own binoculars?” I asked. “No, but my grandchildren are saving to buy me some?” “Do you have a field guide to birds?” “No, she said, “there are such things?” She gave me her address and I sent her a Peterson Eastern Birds. “They’ll never miss it on inventory,” I mused to ease my conscience. Binoculars and a field guide. All you need to engage a world of discovery. Get out there and be captivated. Chimney Swift would make a good spark bird to start your Life List. Heads up.

KISKA is a young black, white, and gray beauty who was found wandering and brought to the shelter. She loves to run in the yard but quickly returns to her human for a quick pat. Kiska would be comfortable in a family that is familiar with husky traits and would keep her exercised and active. Adopt this beautiful lady today!

REIGN is a one year old active boy whose family was moving and couldn’t take him with them. He is adjusting to life at the shelter and learning manners and basic behavior cues. Reign needs a home that will continue his training and also understands that his exuberant behavior is his puppy outlook on life. Adopt this sweet boy today!

MYSTIC is a handsome, 2 year old boy who arrived at the shelter confused and forlorn. He has blossomed into a dog who loves human companionship and eagerly looks forward to his time outside the kennel. He loves to snuggle with his humans and climb into laps if offered! Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

BIANCA is a Siamese and snowshoe mix. She’s also a senior princess who will likely have many eager suitors stopping by the shelter. Her vaccinations are up to date, she’s house-trained like a boss, and now all she needs is a good home with a deserving guardian. Think you’re cool enough to care for this hip cat?

KIKI has been kicked in the face one too many times. Thankfully the shelter has given her lots of love and patience. Now she has blossomed into an inquisitive playful girl. Now change can be hard and she is hoping to find a home again. So here she waits and hopes that there is a home that can give Kiki the time, patience and love that she needs!

LAZLO is an all-around excellent cat. He is very friendly and loves getting attention. Lazlo is a senior cat with the heart of a kitten, and he will chirp at you when he wants you to pet him. Lazlo clearly had a family who cared about him at some point, but he was found outside as a stray. Can you offer this loving senior his forever home?

15 S. Boyd Street Cape May Court House $529,000.

Historic Southern Colonial sits in the heart of Cape May Court House just a block from the Library and Court House on a half acre corner lot with beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens. This home was built in 1901 by Dr. J. Morgan Dix with a separate entrance from the wrap around front porch into his home office, which still exists as a home office and cozy den. Having been passed down through four families over the years, it has been lovingly restored and renovated, and is one of the most unique properties in this historic town.
