The Joy Of The Jersey Tomato! West Cape May’s Tomato Festival in Wilbraham Park August 31, was a joyful celebration of Jersey’s most famous agricultural product (and also this island’s storied agricultural past). Eager attendees shopped at local food, craft and clothing vendor tables, mingled over freshsqueezed lemonade, and bid summer 2019 adieu in style. Proceeds from the event will benefit the West Cape May Shade Tree Commission in their ongoing endeavor to protect and improve the lush tree canopy of West Cape May. SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

The critically endangered Red Handfish, often poached and used as a pet, has fins that look and act more like hands. It uses them to walk along the sea floor. Between two and five inches long, you won’t find these little critters around here — these sociable little creatures prefer the waters around Tasmania.

Did You Know?

Late summer and early fall, being in Cape May can feel like being inside a snowglobe. Only, instead of snow, the sky is a blizzard of monarch butterflies. That’s because this island is an important migratory stopover for these remarkable insects. Every year, weighing less than a paperclip, these gossamer creatures travel 3,000 miles to the forested mountains west of Mexico City. (They’re born with an internal GPS system.) As they travel south, in a good year, 100,000 may be funneled onto the Jersey peninsula, the result of trying to remain over land as long as possible before having to face a tricky Delaware Bay crossing.

What We’re Reading

The Summer House By Val Mulkerns This is the story of one family’s yearly return to the Irish seaside house where they all grew up — and the ghosts of summers past that linger.

Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. Where We Ate: The Washington Inn wine bar. The occasion: We were celebrating we-don’t-feel-like-cookingand-also-we-are-craving-the-Washington-Inn-food day. The manager: Candace Carpio, who comes to Cape May via Denver, Boston and Wailuku, Hawaii, where she honed that HR and restaurant-industry skillset. She told us she’ll be spending a portion of this offseason in southeast Asia, so if you have recommendations for the best Som Tam in Thailand, she’ll likely be keen to hear ’em. The vibe: Constructed in 1846 and reminiscent of Mount Vernon, the plantation house of George Washington, the Washington Inn is among the most stately and romantic restaurants in the state. It’s bright, light and pretty, and the wine bar is a touch more casual than the main dining room. The interior is courtesy of local designer Viviane Rowan of White on Ocean Street. The bartender: Robin Giannini, who makes a mean peach martini complete with a delicious Jersey-fresh peach garnish. The folks next to us opted for the beach plum martini (#gramworthy) made from local beach plums, a tart little fruit that grows wild on our dunes. The food: Served with caramelized fennel and fingerling potatoes over a roasted plum tomato with grilled lemon and black olive tapenade, the branzino is possibly the best branzino we’ve ever tasted. Of course, we also ordered the braised lamb cavatelli (it’s a favorite of EZ employee Katie Repici) and the Italian burrata salad because the first time Diane had burrata she cried tears of joy — no kidding — and this one delivered, too. The shout-out: Big thanks to the stranger who saw the wallet we dropped on the ground and returned it to us without taking the goods. Hey, we had $10 in cash and a vintage Blockbuster video card in there! The dessert: We had to leave unexpectedly due to a loved one in the hospital (no worries — she’s fine), so we didn’t get to order. But this gives us a great excuse to go back for the Banana Foster that is probably full of ooey-gooey goodness.

This week, Daniel Mihai from The Brown Room is up. How long have you been bartending? Seven years. Favorite drink to make? A cherry bourbon sour because it’s smooth and I like to drink them. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers awkwardly, silently stare at me like a scene from a horror movie waiting for me to serve them. Dream job? To not work and just travel around the world. Don’t we all wish that!

T

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

hank you, god, for so promptly flicking the switch from summer to fall. First Will, now Grace? Who’s next? Kramer? Potsie? Have Sanford & Son weighed in? If you had “stars of the gayest, most important, taboo-shattering sitcom of the early 21st century” as “first to revive the Hollywood Black List” in your “it’s 2019 and everything is terrible” pool, please collect your winnings. (If you don’t like this mild tweak of a couple of far left Hollywood actors literally asking for a list of all who attend a Beverly Hills Trump fundraiser so they “know who not to work with”, definitely stay off my Twitter.) Was a pretty sedate week here at Undertow Central as, for the first time in many moons, I only had a couple of gigs. And by “a couple” I mean four. But after a summer of five-to-six shows a week, four felt like a week off. And they were evenly spaced so that I had a four-day stretch in which to do absolutely nothing, which was glorious. I got to do a little writing (more on that later), watch a few movies (Mission: Impossible-Fallout, remains

the standard by which all other action movies must be measured) and catch up on a little TV (the cult gem iZombie has, sadly but not unexpectedly as seems to be the norm in every show I watch, descended into Trump Derangement porn… remember when everything was perfect under Obama and there was no politics in our entertainment? Good times…). But I mostly spent the downtime just hanging out with my oldest son Owen. Jackson continued to work his ass off, making mom and dad proud and bringing his own special spark to Exit Zero Filling Station. Henry

spends five of every seven nights sleeping at a friend’s house, so who the hell knows what he’s getting into. Owen took this last week off from work to chill and hang out with friends, of whom I am fortunate to be one. It’s cool just to be in the room and watch TV with him, you know? (But don’t tell anyone we watched the brilliant new Dave Chapelle special.) Finally, Friday rolled around and we made the trek up to Turnersville to see Mum-Mum and Aunt Ellen in the house where he spent a good chunk of his babyhood (and which still feels a little hollow without Sal reigning over all). We grabbed some Chik-Fil-A because Chik-Fil-A and why isn’t there one in Cape May yet? Watched Godzilla: King of Monsters, tried to sleep on the medieval torture devices that pass for beds, and got up early for move-in day at Rowan University. Owen has been intellectually gifted since he was a baby; walking at 10 months, talking at 11 (his first words being the opening soliloquy of “I, Don Quixote”, which his father played incessantly in the van). He entered school an emotional wreck, as we all were,

At the time we were informed that it was not uncommon for kids to go to two years of pre-K, especially ones as young as Owen, to help with their social maturity, but the consensus seemed to be that Owen, though he could use a little emotional seasoning, would find himself intellectually bored to tears repeating the material, so we moved him on. He has proved that decision correct on literally hundreds of occasions since, always receiving high marks, becoming the excellent student his mom and dad never were, and emerging as a force in the theater and music departments the last three years. But had I known how goddamn hard it was going to be to walk out of that dorm room last Saturday, I would have kept him in pre-K that extra year so I could still have him here. Just one more year. But, as much as that might soothe his mother and me, it’s hard to imagine Owen’s life any differently than it has played out so far. So we’ll just have to miss him. Besides, we still get him for the next four summers, And the 10 years after that when he realizes what good a degree in writing and theater will be. My apologies, I know a lot of people don’t like when I linger too long on a single topic in this silly little column but, uh, this ain’t exactly the New York TImes (thank heavens) and if I can’t use it to heap praise on the people I love then why even have it? So sod off. If I can go back a bit, I believe my in-laws are very subtly trying to tell us to stop staying overnight. Every time we visit the Turnersville Fiorentinos there are fewer places to sleep, and those places are smaller and less comfortable than the last time we visited. King-sized beds have turned into mid-size pull-outs with paper-thin prison mattresses atop. When we go back up for Parents’ Day in a month I’m half-expecting cleverly placed tacks and screws. Well played, mum-mum, well played… Dear Cape Island Home

September 5, 2019 & Garden, I’ll stop writing semi-amusing sarcastic bits about your business if you’ll stop employing frisbee-sized, venom dripping arachnids to scare the everloving crap out of me at 3am Thursday mornings while I’m out on delivery. Ghhbrlburrguhrhuhuguh. (That’s how you spell “full body heebie-jeebie.) Part of Owen’s going -way tour was a goodbye dinner at EZFS. It was Nauti Thursday ($5 drink specials all made from Nauti Spirits booze) and I gotta tell you, the Lime After Lime and Crancherry Crunch (or whatever it’s called, I don’t remember, I had two…) were divine. As was my Coco Shrimp curry and the two forkfuls of Cathrine’s Lobster, Shrimp and Crab Pot Pie I managed to spirit away. With my music schedule going from 75 to 25, you can expect to see a lot more of me and my lustrous beard at EZFS, waiting tables, managing, maybe bartending. And O’Brien & Joyce will still be playing there on Saturdays, 6-10 (assuming O’Brien remembers Joyce’s schedule). For now, EZFS and Sundays/Mondays at Rusty Nail are our only gigs (RN is Monday this week, 4-8). I will enjoy this musical slowdown for approximately three days before champing at the bit for new gigs. Did I mention I’ve been doing some writing? My two frontburner projects are a novelization of a previously published short story The Boat, a WWII-set spy thriller that maybe six of you will remember; and a screenwriting project I can’t say much about because (a) it’s in the discussion phase and (b) anything I announce here always blows up in my face. The story involves an aging singer, who maybe drinks too much, perhaps getting one last chance to make something of himself. I don’t know where I get my ideas. So, there you go. I hope you like reading about how much laundry I have to do and how many socks I have to pair and what IS that growing on my leg? ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

C

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

an that be snow I smell on the wind, or is it the last of the tourists’ cologne wafting on the breeze, as they are headed north by ranchers on the Great Annual Shoebie Drive? I always feel a particular cocktail of emotions after Labor Day, when the throngs of visitors are gone, and I have no use for my cattle prod on my morning walk. On the one hand. I am glad we have Cape May’s sidewalks to ourselves, and to be able to walk a block without having to use the Vulcan Death Grip on fleshy necks left, right and center. And it’s refreshing to not have a big red face demand “Say! Where’s that Exit Zero Diner?” or “Is it true that Cape May Diamonds are worth more than regular diamonds?” (I always say, “Just listen for a burly Scotchman roaring like a bull and you’re close,” and “Yes of course!” in that order). But I do miss the energy of the visitors, their joy at the simplest of pleasures, and their desperation to hand over money for all manner of locally made delights and experiences. That’s not to say that things are dull

off-season. There’s Hallowe’en, the Burning Taxman Festival, Hogmanay, and other visceral thrills to be savored. We all know that there will be no spring at all lest the blood of a dozen out-of-towners be sprinkled on the roots of the All-Seeing Oak in the center of the town, before December 32nd (yes, that is an official date). The last time people failed to take this tradition seriously, winter lasted three years. And, of course, we have the beaches to deep rake. This special attachment to

Find Your Way Back...

the tractors sifts the sand to a depth of 10 feet, and typically removes around 300lbs of trash, several hundred white sneakers, a ton of cheap gold jewelry, a dozen glass eyes and as many as a half dozen entire abandoned Shoebies. These are heaped inside the Concrete Ship, to appease Neptune, and also to stop the wreck from sinking entirely and depriving us of extra tourist dollars. And, always thinking ahead, we have to make the 10,000 tons of saltwater taffy that visitors consume annually, a process not any less complex than that of distilling fine malt whisky, for taffy is made from spun gold and human hair, woven with spidersilk and threads from the poppy plant, then flash fried in silver vats, before being braided by tiny children’s hands (and some little moneys, too, when needs must) into the delight you see and love in Cape May. Once done, we can settle down for hibernation. I myself sleep from January 1 until March 1, in a bed made from the (combed) hair of virgin shoebies (virgin in that they are first time visitors to Cape May).

S

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, a Revolutionary War Encampment

eptember feels like the beginning of a new year. We in America are trained from kindergarten to mark Earth’s revolution around the sun with resolutions, along with pristine notebooks and long pencils with optimistically-tiny erasers. You don’t often get that kind of fresh start in adulthood, so we may find ourselves feeling a bit jealous of the children. Why not take yourself Back to School? Visit the Revolutionary War Encampment at Historic Cold Spring Village. The American War for Independence also marked a revolution in education. As colonies, the new United States had followed England’s lead. Some children — except enslaved children — were taught to read, write and do simple sums, but their school days were over before they were 10. Only wealthy families invested in additional education, and then mostly for boys, who might be sent to England or France to complete their studies. After the Revolution, education became a way to define an American culture. Thomas Jefferson stated that edu-

cation was necessary for the “preservation of freedom and happiness.” George Washington argued for a National Institution to educate “our Youth in the science of Government.” Noah Webster’s American Spelling Book, published in 1783, helped to create a distinct American language. African Free Schools educated freed slaves. American colleges gained prestige as wealthy patriots chose to keep their sons at home. Quality varied — in some areas, the teacher was a teenager who was barely ahead of his students — but the idea that an educated populace was good for democracy took hold.

Educate your part of the populace at the Revolutionary War Encampment, September 7 and 8, 10-4:30. Reenactors will bring the American Revolution to life. Hold your ears for an artillery demonstration on both days at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. You can also visit the school house. Ask around for information on Cape May’s strategic position during the war and the privateers who ferried troops and goods to Philadelphia, in spite of the British blockade. Try your hand at basket weaving, printing, bookbinding or blacksmithing. Watch dishes take shape in the pottery and cookies take shape in the beehive oven. Make friends with the sheep — a little feed in your hand helps. Historic Cold Spring Village (hcsv.org) is three miles north of Cape May. Admission is $14 for adults and $12 for children, free for active military with ID and a 10% discount for veterans with ID. Refreshments are available at the bakery, ice cream parlor and brewery. Call 609-884-0114 for information about the Grange restaurant for lunch.

The Movie Column

“The Farewell” is reviewed by arts columnist Tom Sims

W

hat do borders, generations, and cultures have in common? You can cross all three. When you can do that on a long trip, that’s one thing. When a film does it, that’s quite another accomplishment. The Farewell is a film out of Sundance starring Awkwafina, one of the stars from a big hit from last year, Crazy Rich Asians. The premise is simple: a Chinese family learns that their beloved matriarch, Nai Nai (played by Shuzhen Zhao), has cancer and only six months to live. The catch: nobody wants to tell her — everyone except her granddaughter, Billi, played by Awkwafina. The granddaughter doesn’t only disagree with the family, she protests. Billi and her parents moved to New York City when she was small. Other family moved to other parts of the world. To bring everybody together one last time to see Nai Nai, the family plans a wedding for Billi’s young cousin, despite the couple only being together for three months. Billi is not invited because the family thinks she will not be

able to keep the secret. But she makes her way to China for the occasion. Not telling Nai Nai she only has a few months to live is the biggest secret this family is keeping, but it is not the only secret. Billi did not get accepted for a fellowship at the Guggenheim, but she is not letting anyone know. Her father continues to smoke, but doesn’t let her know. Lulu Wang, who is not widely known, proves herself to be outstanding as both

writer and director for this film. She tells her story in an engaging and effortless way using subtle humor throughout. She captured her ensemble cast beautifully in scenes that depicted their emotion as well as being troubled by their deceit. The story was successful in highlighting the cultural struggle between family tradition and individual conscience. The interrelationships between all the family members was fun to watch with the cast all providing amazing performances. This movie reminded me of one of my favorites, City Island (2009). In that film, family was lying to one another as well, and it took an entire movie to unravel the secrets. The Farewell gives us the same humor on a global scale. Learning about another culture through a good film can be like taking a long trip without the hassles of travel. The Farewell is a journey from the US to China, and it crosses many borders — not just nations but generations and cultures as well. Seen any good movies lately? Email me at tomhsims@aol.com and let me know.

ARIES: You will take the week off to recover from the merrymaking of Labor Day Weekend. You will decide that “merrymaking” is an underutilized word you need to bring back into the lexicon. TAURUS: You will book a massage at Cape May Day Spa. You will drift off and talk in your sleep about the cultural importance of Gilligan’s Island. GEMINI: You will adopt a dog from the county animal shelter. You will name him 50 Scent and take him to the Mutt Strutt this Saturday. CANCER: You will begin training for the 23rd annual Cape May Food and Wine Festival beginning September 13. And by “training” we mean eating and drinking everything your heart desires. LEO: You will take yourself back-to-school shopping. Not because you need back-to-school supplies but because Lisa Frank folders and a California raisins lunchbox give you all the feels. VIRGO: You will ride the Great White Shark on the boardwalk in Wildwood. Youwillnotthrowupyouwillnotthrowupyouwillnotthrowup. LIBRA: You will take the Cape May-Lewes Ferry across the bay for a day of adventure in Delaware. You like big boats and you cannot lie. SCORPIO: You will embark on a Sober September in order to detox after a summer of indulgence. You will also decide that cucumber martinis from The Brown Room don’t count. SAGITTARIUS: In preparation for the big game on September 8, you will stand atop the Cape May mall clock and sing “Fly, Eagles, Fly” while wearing only green body paint and a green tutu. You will be arrested. CAPRICORN: You will see a banded Black Skimmer on the beach near Convention Hall. You will report it at bandedbirds.org so that we can better understand the population dynamics of this beautiful species, and you will receive good karma for the rest of the summer as a result. AQUARIUS: In preparation for the rest of hurricane season, you will stock up on batteries, water and canned goods. And also on all the ingredients necessary for dark-and-stormy cocktails, naturally. PISCES: You will host a “Goodbye, Summer” party in which you thank this season for all it has bestowed and welcome the coming autumnal equinox and all the change it promises. Just kidding — you will cry into your last soft-serve while sniffling, “I’m not ready for fall.”

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I was driving my daughter to soccer practice a few days ago and I wanted to take the time to talk to her about school and her classes. She is starting her freshman year in high school. I asked her repeatedly to put her phone down. She ignored me. I got so angry I grabbed her phone and threw it out the window — while driving. Then we disintegrated into a shouting match in which we both said things we should regret, although part of me does not regret anything. How do we move forward after this? — Angry Mom Dear Angry The goal is to not get to the boiling point. The burden of responsibility lies with you. Ask yourself how it devolved that your daughter has no respect for your authority or the manners to put the phone down. There is nothing to

Wise answers to perplexing questions

be gained by stating the obvious, but let’s do it anyway. You grabbed the phone WHILE driving? Oy! A sit-down is necessary. Why not apologize to your daughter regarding your own behavior and invite her out for an al fresco lobster dinner at the Ugly Mug. Tell her you are getting her a new phone but with restrictions. Leave the decision up to her. She accepts your conditions or goes without a phone. Be true to your word and enforce the restrictions. Dear Answer Lady My daughter and her best friend are going

into eighth grade and have been repeatedly subject to bullying at the “Christian” school I am sending her to. We are Latino, as is her friend, and taints about “the wall” are constant. I have gone to the principal, but she does nothing. It breaks my heart to see this happening to my little girl who is so kind to everyone. I am wondering if I should pull her out of the school or wait until high school. My daughter wants to stick it out for the sake of her friend who is picked on much more. What do you think? — Worried Parent Dear Worried Perhaps you can join forces with your daughter’s friend’s parents and leave the school together. That would make quite the statement. There might even be more parents who are facing the same problem. Think about taking your case to the school board. Get as many parents as you can together. Meet at On the Rocks Dockside Grill and discuss a strategy for dealing with the school and forming a support group. Bullies are cowards and thrive on the fact that their victims appear helpless. Take that away from them.

ROSIE is a ten year old girl whose family could no longer take care of her. It is a difficult adjustment for her to come to the shelter after living with a family for so long, so she is looking for a home that will welcome her. She would be a good companion for someone who wants a dog who has outgrown the puppy antics. Adopt Rosie today!

DIXIE is a mature, active girl who was brought to the shelter as a stray. She has quickly become a staff and volunteer favorite due to her affectionate and sweet disposition. She loves to go for walks and has good leash manners. Dixie is looking for a family that will open their hearts for this well behaved lady and give her the happy home she deserves.

Robert Panaccio, VMD Robert Moffatt, VMD Nancy Reilly, VMD Patricia J. Link, DVM

REBEL is an energetic three year who loves to chase balls in the yard and go for long walks. Unfortunately, Rebel’s owner had to move and was unable to take Rebel with him- both human and dog were devastated. Rebel would thrive in a home that would keep him active both physically and mentally and the humans would have a loving and playful companion.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

LEVI is a beautiful big male, but don’t let that fool you. He is a working male. Levi’s early years were spent outside surviving the rough and tumble ways of the alley cat. Now Levi would like to spend his days lounging in a warm cozy home. So if you’re looking for a hearty male, then come on by and meet Levi. He deserves all the love in the world!

DUSTY was born in beautiful Victorian Cape May. He was a happy kitten, he was loved, played, hunted like any other kitten. He played by the beach, rolled in the sand. Dusty was special, his caregiver knew he could never part with him. 15 years forward, Dusty’s caregiver passes away, leaving Dusty scared, confused and homeless. Adopt!

WAFFLES came to the shelter and got checked out by the doctor and found out she has a pretty bad heart murmur. The good news is they said maybe she could grow out of it, but only time will tell. In the meantime, she’s waiting here at the shelter. But waffles would be much happier if she had a home and a family instead of living in a cage.
