37th Annual Clambake At CM VFW Post 386 P20-34

Civil War Weekend At Cold Spring Village P42-46

What’s been brewing in Cape May? So glad you asked! Last Saturday, September 14, marked the annual Harvest Brew Fest on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate. Attendees enjoyed local craft beers, local wine, local spirits, local food vendors, artisans, author signings and musical talent. The picture-perfect September weather was just a bonus. We’re already looking forward to what’s on tap (heh) next year. Top: Christine and Ken Conner, Sue Rea, John Cardow, Janet and Jim Peck, Keith and Marianna Conner. SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

We picked the polka-dot nudibranch because we like his name. This guy (which is also a gal — they’re hermaphroditic) is one of more than 3,000 species of nudibranch, or small sea slug-like creatures. They come in every color combo imaginable. They are carnivores, so they eat sponges and barnacles and fish eggs. When they eat poisonous animals, they can become poisonous themselves.

Cape May’s bayside beaches commonly turn up Native American artifacts. That’s because, prior to European settlement, several Indian groups passed through this area. Men within the Lenni Lenape tribe would set fire to natural vegetation in order to smoke out deer they would shoot with a spear attached to a shaft with animal tendons. Projectile points were chipped by the water, using stone, and many still wash up today. While these are the most recognizable artifacts, lucky collectors also come across shards of pottery and tobacco pipes, jewelry made of shell beads, bone whistles, and pestle and mortar devices used for crushing spices.

Here’s what the EZ team had for breakfast this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. Where We Ate: The Pier House, aka the restaurant of La Mer Beachfront Resort on Beach and Pittsburgh Avenues. The menu: American dishes with a Mediterranean flair. The space: Brand-spanking new from the floor up. It recently underwent a rebuild, complete with a twinkly-lit new terrace. Inside, expect a light-and-airy vibe, thanks to a white marble bar and a powder-blue-and-white color scheme that feels coastal without being gimmicky. The occasion: Breakfast. And yes, that IS a special occasion in our book. The parking: Plentiful and meter-free! The weather: A little drizzly. Which meant we felt nice and cozy inside with our hot tea, sitting beside one of the many Pier House windows overlooking intrepid joggers on the promenade and pretty dune grasses fluttering in the wind. The food: Avocado toast (hey, there were millennials in our midst!) with crispy fried egg on top. The Pier House version blends the avo with Greek yogurt, making for a dish unlike the usual. Some fresh-sliced radishes provided the perfect (or should we say pier-fect?) amount of crunch. We also tried The Jackson sandwich, a take on the classic French sandwich, the Croque Madame. (We know it was good because Jack swatted Diane’s hand away.) It comes with grilled American and cheddar cheeses, applewood smoked bacon, and fried eggs on buttery artisan bread, plus potatoes on the side. The coincidence: Funnily enough, it turns out that George Andy, managing partner of La Mer, was having breakfast at our place, the Exit Zero Filling Station, at the time we were sitting down to dine at HIS restaurant. Small world… er, island. The conversation: Diane’s babysitting plans for later in the day (zoo with a four-year-old!); the recent Penn State victory over Pittsburgh (we are!); and whether Jack looked cute in his new Urban Outfitters T-shirt (he did!). The on-deck meal: For breakfast, we’ll be back for those bowls (trust us on the Hellenic Veggie).

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

eptember in Cape May is a wonderful time of year. The days are warm, the nights are cool, the AC units go back in the shed, and all the bugs start coming inside. Whoopsie of the Week: So I was finishing up a brisk breakfast/lunch shift at Exit Zero Filling Station on Sunday when my phone pinged at precisely 4 o’clock. It was a text from Tim Joyce stating, simply, “Starting.” Starting what? I wondered for about .03 seconds when my blood ran cold. “Holy crap, we have a gig.” My plan of going home, watching some football, ordering some Chinese went out the window and the scramble to get to the Rusty Nail was on. Fortunately, the Nail is about three blocks from the EZFS. Also fortunately, I had a spare T-shirt in the truck. Extra fortunately, I also keep all my music gear in there so, voila! By 4:05 I was on stage and jumping in to “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash. WHEW. Some combination of illness and constantly staring at my Google Drive schedule has given me calendar dyslexia. So, to be clear, this week O’Brien & Joyce are at Exit

Zero Filling Station on Saturday and Rusty Nail on Monday. And, uh, maybe a text or call from my wing man PRIOR to exactly 4pm would have been helpful. But, you know, my bad. And Saturday will actually be O’Brien & Olivero as I play my first gig with my Beatles, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Prince drummer Al Olivero. He’ll be stepping out from behind the skins to accompany me on guitar and piano. Will we be any good? We have no idea! As of this writing we have yet to rehearse because rehearsal is for nerds. But

Al has been playing solo gigs all over Cape May amd Atlantic City, so worse comes to worst, he can sing the whole gig and I’ll just be the sexy tambourine player like in a Robert Palmer video from 1987. (Side note: The Robert Palmer Pandora station is absolute aces.) I don’t know who she was, but the lady enthusiastically singing along to “Black Coffee in Bed” at the Filling Station won my heart. You all know Squeeze is my favorite band, or co-favorite with REM depending on the time of day, and they should be yours, too. Just do this; go to YouTube, line up “Some Fantastic Place”, “Annie Get Your Gun” and “Cigarette of a Single Man”, listen to them, and if you’re not inspired to explore more of their music, I’ll understand... just walk into the ocean. While I’m pseudo-on-the-topic, there are changes afoot in my gig calendar I should make you aware of. Starting Friday October 11, O’Brien & Joyce will be at Exit Zero Filling Station on Friday AND Saturdays, 6pm-10pm. This is good news. However, on Saturday November 2, we move to Carney’s as the O’Brien & Joyce Trio with the afore-

mentioned Al Olivero on drums/ piano/ gee-tar. So, Fridays at EZ, Saturdays at Carney’s (with a couple of exceptions) for November and December. Why create such a horrendously confusing schedule, you might ask? That’s a hurtful question, I might answer, and then explain that I booked the Carney’s gigs in February before Exit Zero was a glimmer in our collective eye. Plus, with this much overwhelming, god-given talent, it is my duty to share it in as many venues and for as many humans as possible that they might share in my awesomeness. Also, I’m contractually bound. I know what you’re thinking. “Seven paragraphs talking about gigs and schedules and obscure 80s new wave bands? Why, it’s almost like Terry has nothing to talk about this week and is just padding his column with fluff to reach a specific word count!’ I assure this is not the case. I assure you this is truly not the case. It is truly, truly, truly, truly, truly not the case. Okay, that’s totally the case. But it’s like my old pappy used to say; if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with an overabundance of metaphors that make as much sense as a pizza on an elevator. Did you ever do that thing where you’re walking into the back kitchen door of the restaurant you work at, you reach out for the knob, then somebody inside kicks the door open, completely destroying the middle three fingers of your right hand? No? Just me? I don’t know when I became so injury-prone, but do yourself a favor and don’t walk too close behind me. A safe is bound to fall out of the sky and crush me WileE-Coyote-style at any moment. So you know I like Squeeze and you know I hate spiders. How could I possibly combine these two things into something you want to read about? Like this; I’m out on my Exit Zero magazine delivery route last week (my earliest start; 10pm. Next week I’m going to start before the magazines even get there…) and I’m rolling through my Cape May Point stops, streaming the

September 19, 2019 Squeeze on the YouTube because the Highlander has a nifty Bluetooth connection, when a nasty eight-legged critter starts strutting across my windshield with impunity. “I’ll show him!” I think and flip on the wipers, hoping not to kill him but to show him who’s boss and the creature doesn’t even flinch because THE GODDAMN SPIDER IS INSIDE THE CAR! So I did the adult thing and threw the truck into park (while still moving, which I’m sure is super-good for the transmission) and ran down the street in front of Cape May Point Post Office. Funny, right? Well, about 10 stops later I’m at Cape Island Home & Garden, notorious home of the world’s largest man-eating spiders, sweating bullets, trying to screw up the courage to wander into the hellish pit of misery at this otherwise wonderful place to buy all your plants and birds and rocks and things. How did I do it? Ever see the Spongebob where he works at night and runs screaming back and forth to the dumpster? I did it like that. Speaking of my delivery route, I feel like a few places get suspicious when I pull in at anywhere between 11pm and 3am, specifically Willow Creek Winery, which requires I drive past two houses and a hundred geese to drop off their bundle, but I can assure you; there is nothing untoward going on. Just ignore that thumping coming from the truck. I hit a deer. Have a knife I can borrow? (Cheers to all who get that Goodfellas reference, and the Horse With No Name reference from previous paragraph.) Went to see IT Chapter Two with Jackson last Friday the 13th. He loves/hates scary movies, curling up next to me in dread, then bursting out with laughter, the ideal person to see a scary movie with. Part One was probably my favorite movie of 2017. This is… not that. It’s fine, a dutiful sequel that finishes the story, but it lacks the soul of the first. Now, about the Democrat Presidential debates… ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am afraid we have no choice but to leave New Jersey. Oh, I know, we have never, here in Cape May, felt like we belonged to the state, not really. Why, just the other day, a post-season Shoebie accosted me utterly without reason. And by “utterly” I mean, for merely pausing my carriage (I usually walk, but my gout was playing up, and anyway, I wanted to give the new Shetlands a run. We are, you see, home to the largest Rescue Shetland Pony center in the South, and once the poor wee beasts are recovered, I like them to feel useful, thus 28 of them pull the carriage) to tell him that his shirt was too billowy, his salmon pink shorts too snug, and his watch too large and gaudy. He then shrieked, “You lot think you’re better than me, just because I’m from Ocean City, don’t you? You think you’re oh so smart, and better than the rest of us, here on your precious little peninsula, don’t you? You’re just a snob!” I considered for a long moment, even taking my top hat off, to scratch my head. Eventually, I said “I’m shocked at your words, sir! It’s an outrage! Ocean City, you say?”

But our departure is overdue, and all at once, much prepared for. We have the canal, cunningly dug on some wartime pretext, but designed to be a moat, and we have very limited points of anchor to the mainland. Also, we have our own currency, the Captain Kid gold sovereign. Those of you who know things, are well aware that we have been circulating that pirate’s long-lost-but-actually-found-by-us treasure, and in the event of separation, there will be no change, except that we will all have extra bulges in our pants.

Find Your Way Back...

And I do not mean from the excitement of change, though I admit such is stirring even for a man of my advanced years. I mean, our official coin will be actual coin, to be handed over in exchange for local goods and services. I wish to stress to New Jersey (with the exception of Ocean City, Wildwood, and Atlantic City) that it is not that we feel superior. At least that’s not the reason, though it goes without saying that we think it to be the case. It’s because we feel you have not made the same efforts we have, to avoid sinking beneath the waves. While we have scrimped and saved to install 300,000 floatation devices under the city, you have bought new cars and homes. As we stitched 100 acres of sailcloth to fit the mast disguised a lighthouse, you collaborated with that televised monstrosity, “Jersey Shore”. And while we melted cutlery down into canons, you adopted plastics. So, we are almost ready. And come January 22, 2022,22hrs exactly (the numbers have huge significance to Cape May, as you know), we will raise the sails, weigh anchor and set off for life on the high sea!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the Food and Wine Celebration

ood often enhances a celebration, but for the next two weeks, it’s the guest of honor. Culinary delights are in the spotlight from September 13 through 22, as the Cape May Food and Wine Celebration marks its 23rd year. Luckily, this Cape May tradition usually coincides with the best weather of the season, so you can enjoy long walks along the beach to burn off the extra calories. Watch Cape May’s kitchen stars shine at a Chef’s Dine Around, on September 15, 16 or 19 at 6pm. For $125 and the good sense to make a timely reservation, you’ll enjoy “a five-course gourmet feast, with each course served in one of Cape May’s premier restaurants.” The right wine for each dish will be poured, and a wine expert will explain the pairings. A charming Cape May trolley takes you from restaurant to restaurant, providing time to socialize and digest between courses. Don’t think about it too long — these events usually sell out. Learn more about your dinner’s journey from ocean to plate with a tour of Fisherman’s Wharf, followed by lunch at the the Lobster

House. Enjoy clam chowder, with a sandwich of lobster salad or chicken sandwich, French fries and coleslaw. Enjoy a look behind the scenes of the largest commercial fishing port in New Jersey on Tuesday, September 17 and Thursday, September 19 at 11am. Tickets $30. Explore vegan dining on Tuesday, September 17 at 5:30pm at the Good Earth Organic Eatery. Try a four course Italian vegan dinner, including soup, salad, entrée and dessert, accompanied by a lecture on “Healthy Eating in the Modern Era.” Consider “food as medicine.” Tickets are $50, including gratuity. Beverages are extra.

Take your palate to new heights with a special event at Cape May Airport. On Wednesday, September 18 at 10am hop a MAC trolley for a foodie- friendly tour featuring tastings at Cape May Brewing Company, Cape May Peanut Butter Company and Cape May Olive Oil Company. Tickets $45. Later, indulge in small bites at Mudhen Brewing Company at 7pm. Guests will receive a tour of the brewery as well as their Flagship or Brewer’s Choice Flight, paired with two small bites of the chef’s choice. Cost is $50. Travel around the world through cheese on Saturday, September 21 at 7pm at Seaside Cheese. Enjoy cheese flights along with soup, salad and dessert.Tickets $25. Treat yourself to a Champagne Jazz Brunch on Sunday, September 22 at Aleathea’s Restaurant at the Inn of Cape May. Savor the music of Mary Lou Newnam and Ray Malach performing the Great American Songbook while you savor a brunch buffet. Tickets $35. Visit capemaymac.org information and tickets for these events. Please note, most venues can not accommodate children.

“Nothing Like A Dame” is reviewed by arts columnist Tom Sims

our lifelong friends, a spot of tea, and a countryside estate — sounds like a delightful afternoon. When those four friends are legendary English actresses, tea time becomes epic. What happens when Eileen Atkins, Judi Dench, Joan Plowright and Maggie Smith get together for an afternoon? Why don’t you join them? For that matter, why don’t you join your friends the Cape May Film Society as they screen the film Nothing Like a Dame this Saturday, September 21, 7pm at West Cape May Borough Hall on Broadway. These four actresses were given the honor of “dame” bestowed by England for “their service to drama.” They have known each other for decades, so it’s not a surprise when the conversation goes in many different directions. Of course, they talk about theater and acting. But this is for more than just a glimpse backstage — they talk family, husbands, war and about being pretty. “You’re no oil painting my dear, but you have the spark,” Plowright recalls a colleague telling her once. Atkins recalls two theater

teachers talking about how she is not pretty but, thankfully, one added, “No, she’s not traditionally pretty but do you know what... she’s sexy.” The dames also discuss getting older. Dench could have used a hearing aid during the filming. But Smith points out a particular pet peeve — when people ask if you’ve got your funeral arrangements in order. The best insights throughout the movie are about the theater. First is the role of Cleopatra. Atkins had never played the

part, but the other three had. They laughed about how their male co-stars never know that Antony is a secondary part opposite the historic queen. “But they never know until halfway through the performance,” Atkins said. What about reviews? To the dames, it’s simple — you don’t read them. Someone will tell us about them, they figure. “Isn’t theater a lie?” asks Plowright about the struggles actors have in portraying their parts authentically. “You find a way to make it happen and appear spontaneous, and that’s the difference between truth and illusion.” Dench takes the last word from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, “We are such stuff/As dreams are made on/And our little life/is rounded with a sleep.” The world has given these wonderful women awards, titles, and we have watched them in movies and on television and stage. Their glorious years of experience have given them the opportunity to speak volumes to the most important elements of life. Join the film Society this Saturday and listen in! You’ll be impressed.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I met a man online He lives a couple hours away but we think we can make it work once we meet, which is next week. He has offered to come to Cape May. I’m a bit nervous. He seems nice and, so far, all his info checks out, but he could be a serial killer for all I know. How do you think I should handle the meetand-greet? Where would you suggest we meet? Should I offer to drive halfway? My brother has offered to follow and keep an eye on me but do you think that would be, I don’t know, not showing good faith? — Anxious Dater Dear Anxious You should absolutely meet on your home turf and in a public place. The Answer Lady would suggest the Ugly Mug. It’s very public, very well known and has two escape routes.

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Your brother’s idea is a good one. He can easily blend in and your date will never know. You can work on good faith once you are sure you are safe. And you are wise to take these precautions. BE positive but be prepared. Dear Answer Lady My 29-year-old daughter informed me she is expecting a child and wants to move back home. You have got to be kidding! I just got my youngest out of the house and in an apartment. I just started thinking about how I was going to redo the house now that

I don’t need four bedrooms, and here she is coming back home. One bedroom’s for her and a nursery for the baby. Now my life will now be centered around a baby who will need to be looked after while my daughter works because the father has already signed off. Of course, I will not turn my back on her but when is it my time? And how do I cope with this? — Reluctant Granny Dear Granny You are, as they say in Yiddish, a mensch — a good person. Some ground rules, however, are going to have to be set down. Think about bringing in an au pair to help out and/or a housekeeping team to ease the burden, even if it’s sporadic. As for you, make taking care of you a top priority. If you want to go out with the girls for a glass of wine at Cape May Winery — do so. Definitely go to Cape May Day Spa regularly. The “Wish I Could Turn Back Time” special would be perfect. Also, make an independent living situation a goal you and your daughter actively work toward — even if it’s a mother-in-law type suite within the house.

Bird Droppings

P

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

eople often ask writers where they draw inspiration from. Mostly I rely on my inner muse. This morning I was nudged by providence. Coffee mug in hand, I sat by the front window just in time to see an Osprey f ly by with a silver-sided fish, a menhaden or “bunker,” I surmised. Schooling fish in plentiful supply, that swim close to the surface are mostly target by the “fish hawk,” an altogether remarkable. Nearly eagle-sized, it is almost wholly dependent upon fish, a specialization that the Osprey is ideally suited to capture. Equipped with a swiveling outer toe, Osprey can present fish with a cornered set of talons. The pads of an Osprey’s feet are equipped with fish grabbing spicules, just the ticket for holding slippery prey. The birds’ plumage is dense and oily, shedding water as soon as they emerge from their meter-deep plunge. The crooked wings of Osprey are designed to

withstand the shock of entry and leverage the birds aloft after a plunge. Alexander Wilson, the father of American Ornithology called the birds “vigorous winged.” And indeed the birds do f lap more than most large raptors. Osprey are the sole member of a one-species bird family, the Pandonidae; found on every continent except Antarctica, the birds in South America do not breed there. Their birds are our birds that spend the northern winter and the first

non-breeding year of their life in South America, where our birds are heading, now. In South Jersey since April, arriving in time to catch the shad and menhaden runs, the birds are departing now following another successful breeding season. Most of the nests I see host two to three young, the sign of plentiful fish and a healthy environment. Good new for Osprey and us insofar as we rely upon the same environment to support us. The best place to see Osprey is the Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point. Not only will birds be migrating overhead but nearby bunker pond is heavily fished. Bring your camera. The platform is also a good place to see Bald Eagle which f ly in to steal the fish captured by Osprey. It may not seem fair but Osprey adjust to a measure of shrinkage and after buying off the eagle, head out to catch their own dinner. See you non the platform under raptor-filled skies.

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

MAXINE is a two year old German shepherd who lived with a family including children before coming to the shelter. It is reported that she was good with everyone in the family, but was not comfortable with outsiders. Maxine will be shown to potential adopters with an approved application and by appointment only. Give Maxine a second chance and adopt!

BENNY is a black lab mix breed pup of about 9 months of age who came to the shelter as a stray. He is friendly with people and other dogs and will do well in an active home with people who are interested in training him. Benny will probably be best suited to an adult household or one with older kids since he needs consistent training. Adopt today!

Robert Panaccio, VMD Robert Moffatt, VMD Nancy Reilly, VMD Patricia J. Link, DVM

PRINCE arrived at the shelter as a stray. He is friendly and loves to run freely in the play yard. chasing toys or simply being energetic. His leash manners are excellent and taking long walks is one of his favorite things. This four year old has outgrown the puppy impulsiveness and would be a wonderful companion for an active family - he is truly a “prince of a dog!
