It’s A Farce At East Lynne! When East Lynne Theatre Company on Hughes Street started advertising their production of Arsenic and Old Lace the darkly comedic play that was first adapted for the screen in 1944, they promised “murder, mayhem and madcap fun” — and they delivered! But the fun didn’t end with curtain call. On September 18, an opening night party was held across the street at The Merion Inn. Attendees enjoyed free hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and lively chit-chat about the show. The production, which The Wall Street Journal said “crackles flawlessly,” runs through October 12.

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS
Weird Sea Creature
Did You Know?
What We’re Reading
The Giant Isopod, which can grow up to two-and-a-half feet long, is protected by a hard shell. When disturbed, it can roll up into a ball. Though related to the pillbugs you see in your garden, these guys aren’t bugs — they’re crustaceans. They walk along the bottom of the ocean, and though they can go five years without eating, when they finally chow down, they gorge themselves.
There’s no such thing as a seagull — those long-winged, web-footed seabirds you see in Cape May are, simply, gulls. We get 11 types here, and some of them are year-round residents while others are seasonal visitors. In the fall, the lesser black-backed gull is a common sight. You’ll know him by his slate-grey wings and a smudgy patch around the eye. They enjoy getting their feet wet, so you’ll regularly spot several of them standing in the surf at Cape May Point.

Here’s what the EZ team had for lunch this week
E
very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. Where We Ate: The Rusty Nail at The Beach Shack on Beach Avenue. The occasion: The last day of summer. (We’re not crying… someone must have, uh, kicked some sand in our eye.) We’d been on the beach, enjoying picture-perfect weather, and we got the nibbles. The seats: Adirondack chairs on the sand. Close enough to the firepit to get the vibe. Far enough away to not be roasted in the afternoon heat. To be honest, we weren’t really needing the heat of the firepit that day, but it does look cool. The accolade: Travel and Leisure magazine named the Rusty Nail — or the Nail, to locals — among the top 10 best beach bars in the nation. It’s also got the coldest beer on the island, according to a super scientific study conducted by us. (Though that analysis was done before we started serving our own beer at Exit Zero Filling Station, it must be said.) The Nail has always been a popular spot for the surfer crowd. And wastes better after a long day of getting barreled (or getting worked) in the waves than a cold beer? The food: VP of hotel operations for Cape Resorts, Patrick Logue, had recently told us how much he loves the Nail’s BBQ ribs, so you know we had to do it — a half rack with cornbread and a side of mac and cheese. Patrick didn’t steer us wrong. We added the cone of mozzarella sticks, because cheese. The Eagles may have lost this day (we could tell by the groans coming from the outdoor bar), but our food was a win. The dogs: Everywhere, adorable and well-behaved. Did we mention the Nail is pup friendly? They’ve got a doggie menu and everything. No, we didn’t steal the German shepherd with the soulful eyes while his owner was distracted ordering drinks, but we wanted to. The conversation: Stealing dogs. The consensus: The season may be over, but the vibe is endless summer at the Nail.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
don’t want to say the transition from being a relatively sedentary rock-androll vocalist four-to-five nights a week to hustling waiter four-to-five nights a week has been daunting, but I will say that, right now, my toenails hurt. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been fun being back at Exit Zero Filling Station on a pretty much full-time basis since September 2 (I thought the seasons changed gradually, not with the flick of a switch… maybe climate change is real?); I’ve renewed friendships that fell off the radar in June, met a bunch of new staff (including new Executive Chef Bill MacClemmy, who has been on the job only a short time but already made some excellent changes) and said goodbye to a few more (Mihai and Eve, you will be missed). All of this is great circle-of-life type stuff, but it’s a little hard on my aging tootsies. Speaking of aging tootsies… man, what a great segue that would make, but even I’m not that cruel. Adding to my various aches and pains (continuous left knee throbbing, intermit-
tent right hip pain, limited range of painless motion in my left shoulder, which is new and exciting) is the vicious bruise my pride took when I kicked the side of the access ramp at Business That Shall Remain Nameless during my delivery route last Wednesday night and faceplanted into a gravel driveway. I popped right up like Carson Wentz after a big hit, but I’m not gonna lie, it hurt. Sidebar: I just started watching The Deuce on HBO, and I was kind of buying in until James Franco walked in as James Franco’s twin brother. One James Franco is
enough for me, thanks. But if you’re watching, keep an eye out for local actress Kyra Adams in a small part. Can’t say I approve of the role, but I do approve of Kyra on her quest to conquer the world. Matt Baxter Luceno stopped in for some kraken wings the other day. Yada yada yada turns out we met a couple of years ago during Theater Week (remember that time I tried to start a theater festival on par with jazz and singer-songwriter weekend? No? Just me?) and he is currently in town for the run of Arsenic and Old Lace with East Lynne Theater Company. We spoke for a few minutes about the show, the cast (which includes my old Elaine’s co-star Jeff Sharkey), but I was mostly impressed with how, during the conversation, he didn’t once scream in pain or beg for water after eating those wings. That is acting. Also had the pleasure of waiting on Tom “Big Sexy” Johnson and a group of fellow birding weirdos. (I forget, what did we call a group of birding weirdos that travel together? A Flock? A Gang? A Celibate?)

FOOD & DRINK
Anyway, Tom signed his credit card receipt with his Declaration of Independence-worthy signature and “Weird forever!” Weird on, you beautiful man, weird on. (It was also nice of some of your companions to come back for dinner Saturday for a little O’Brien & Caterini.) Speaking of O’Brien & Caterini... it’s usually O’Brien & Joyce at Exit Zero on Saturdays, but Tim had a thing, so I brought in my Beatles and Billy Joel drummer, Al Olivero, to play guitar and piano, but turns out I also offered the gig to Bill Caterini because sometimes I’m profoundly stupid. Well, all’s well that ends well as Al was able to book a gig closer to home and Bill and I played EZFS. It’s always fun playing with Bill, the crowd really dug us, and we’re back at it on October 12. Part of my EZFS waiter schtick is to autograph my column for unsuspecting diners, some of whom willingly fork over their magazine, while others clutch it like I’m trying to steal their purse. Either way, last week Elizabeth Clifford nicely turned the tables by giving me her autographed gift shop receipt, to which I said, “What? No phone number?” She shrugged, nodded towards her husband, and left. This fame thing is really getting me places. Was nice to see Liz Shay and Rose Kelly, though I wish the occasion wasn’t quite so somber; they were acquiring raffle prizes for a benefit for Roy Baker, a local titan who recently passed. We chatted a bit about Roy and the quite excellent new Ken Burns documentary currently airing on PBS, Country Music, which Roy would probably have really liked. Never had much taste for it, myself, but, as with any Ken Burns doc, the devil is in the details. Fascinating stuff. I may or may not have spent last Friday night watching reruns of Little House on the Prairie if you want to know how exciting my non-gig weekends are. Boy, that palindrome week
September 26, 2019 last week was crazy, wasn’t it? Belated Thanks of the Week: I missed a gig for the first time in forever last Monday (a bug I’ve been fighting since 1997) and Tom Naglee was able to step in and cover me at the last minute. Tom is not only an accomplished fiddle player, he’s a pretty good guy, too. Janine Kreh won’t shut up about him… (But seriously, thanks Tom. And watch that Country Music documentary.) If you like your vape, you can keep your vape. Speaking of multi-dimensional local musicians, Dave Landis, the lead piano player in my Billy Joel band, is going to fix my dryer! The things musicians can do these days… In the wake of semi-forgetting about my Rusty Nail gig last Sunday, EZ editor-in-chief Jack Wright bellowed over the upstairs wall, “Don’t you read your own column?” Though it sounded more like, “Dintcha rid yer oon gollum?” No, I do not always read my own column, but unlike some others employed at this magazine, I am able to produce one. (Sick burn.) One of the great (meaning not great) things about having cable television back in my house is having to click some form of “WATCH” or “WATCH NOW” or “CLICK HERE TO WATCH NOW” about six times before actually getting to watch something. Also, the Phillies. That’s all for this week. If you’re feeling adventurous, come on up to North Wildwood on Friday night to hear some live music at Ye Olde Anglesea Pub. The following Friday, Love Me Dudes begins and ends its world tour with a gig in Manchester, NJ (finding towns like this are why Google Maps was invented), and mark your calendars now for Columbus Day Sunday, October 13, when The Strangers will play all your Billy Joel favorites at Carney’s ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
D
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
id you know we used to have a skyscraper in Cape May? Technically speaking, we still do, but the whole thing went a little awry, which longterm residents among you will note is a common theme in our fair city’s great projects. I tend to think it’s because we reach for the stars, and when one does that, sometimes one trips over the sidewalk. Our World’s Fair Pavilion (1878) was a crystal marvel — a 2:1 scale model of the Taj Mahal, made entirely from semi-precious stones. But a careless overlap with the National Slingshot Convention led to disaster. And our bridge across the Atlantic (1914) was an engineering marvel, and allowed a charabanc to drive from The Point to Berlin in three days. But we hadn’t seen the rise of The Kaiser, who was fast to use the bridge for his invasion of New Jersey. We had to dynamite the whole thing — you can still see the remains of the final span in the ocean off The Point. We call it The Concrete Ship to distract from just how close to disaster we came. Oddly, the more gullible among visitors actually believe that we made a ship from concrete.
Our answer to that den of foulness, New York’s Rockerfeller Center, to provide jobs during The Great Depression was The Art Deco Tower on land reclaimed out near The Point. We had hobos and similar ragged jobless people hauling a bucket-chain of rubble all the way from Wildwood (we demolished that village’s few stone buildings for raw materials) for months, and finally, work started. The Tower was a marvel of sweeping concrete spans and soaring glass windows, and within a year, we had topped out at 100 floors. I
Find Your Way Back...
think, looking back, that the decision — after a few too many single malts at The Admiral — to add a functioning lighthouse on the top, was perhaps the straw that broke the camel’s back. Because no sooner had we completed that, and gathered the (surviving) workmen to see their work officially completed, than the weight of the whole damn thing proved too much for the stone base, largely because it turned out that those duplicitous Wildwooders had not used stone in their grand buildings, but plaster. There was an almighty cacophony (more even than Cape May create on opening night) and the whole tower dropped from sight, into the depthless sinking sands. Only the very top was left poking out, which in the end turned out to be rather handy, as what self respecting beach resort doesn’t need a fine lighthouse? All in all, if one discounts the loss of life (mostly Irishmen and Scotchmen, who were too dim-witted to flee) and some $454 million spent building it (in today’s money), it all turned out rather well! And there are grand plans to slowly jack the perfectly preserved hotel up again, a foot a year!

The Activity Column

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Lunch and Learn
ost historians suggest that beach-going, as we know it, is a relatively new activity. While evidence exists that wealthy Romans built seaside villas for the views, the sea air, and leisure boating, for most of the population, the seaside was a place of work. On the beach, salt harvesters set out their pans, fishermen set out their nets, sailors set off for their journeys. For them, to be “on the beach” was to be marooned, stranded, or helpless. The shoreline marked a boundary between danger and safety as well as a border between nations. The notion of a beach vacation was foreign. An economy built around seaside amusements was centuries away. English painter J.M.W. Turner helped to equate the seaside with escape. Turner’s seascapes seemed wild and rugged to his city-dwelling contemporaries, suggesting the possibility that there was more to life than modern drudgery. Train travel made that escape possible for working-class families, and amusements popped up to invite travelers to linger. By the turn of the 20th century,
seaside towns all over the world added rides and games to beach vacations, with names that became shorthand for fun: Coney Island, Brighton, Santa Monica, Luna Park, Tivoli and Atlantic City. Cape May, accepting vacationers since 1761, was ahead of the curve. Learn about the history of seaside fun at September 28th’s Lunch and Learn, at the Washington Inn. Presenter Alex Breve will offer a “colorful look at the world of Seashore Amusements: from the Middle Ages to Cape May.” On October 26, get into the Halloween spirit with “Tombs, Tunes and Tales with Professor Gravesounds and Mary Shelley” at Lucky Bones, featuring scary stories and
music, presented by Rich Chiemingo and Melissa Palmer. On November 23, learn about Cape May’s earliest seaside visitors with “Native Americans of the Jersey Shore.” The Lenni Lenape, Native Americans who lived in and around New Jersey, travelled from inland villages to the ocean in the warmer months, where they fished and enjoyed a respite from the summer heat. Stories of legends like King Nummy and Princess Snowflower demonstrate the impact of contact with Europeans. On December 14, tune up for Christmas with presenter Rich Chiemengo. Call 609-8845404 for reservations and information. Tickets are $20 and include lunch buffet. If you can’t make a lunchtime session, consider a Sunday evening lecture. On October 13 at 5pm, Convention Hall welcomes presenter Lee Pollock for “Roosevelt and Churchill: The Friendship That Saved The World.” Discover the challenges these two men faced as they worked together to defeat the Nazi threat. Tickets are $40, $15 for students and teachers. A “Meet the Speaker” reception with refreshments will follow in the lobby.

The Theater Column
East Lynne’s “Arsenic and Old Lace” is reviewed by Mal Knapp
I
t might be the funniest play of the 20th century. In any case, Arsenic and Old Lace is the funniest play about homicidal maniacs. It runs at East Lynne through October 12. This classic opened on Broadway in 1941, and one of its charms is that it takes us back to a gentler era, one in which ladies of a certain age might entertain gentlemen callers with a glass of elderberry wine. Well… mostly elderberry wine. Two sisters, Abby and Martha Brewster, help lonely old men in this world by hurrying them on to the next. They have three nephews, Teddy, who knows he’s Theodore Roosevelt; Johnathon, a homicidal maniac; and Mortimer, a theater critic. Make of that what you will. The playwright, Joseph Kesselring, seasoned these unusual blend of characters with Elaine, Mortimer’s fiancée, Dr Einstein, Johnathon’s accomplice, policemen, a minister and, of course, a superintendent of a mental institution. The play is a farce, and pretty much all the acting is at least a bit over the top,
as it should be. Most of the actors were in last year’s production. Abby and Martha are delightfully played by Suzanne Dawson and Gayle Stahlhuth, who are clearly having a good time. Gayle also directed. New this year is Matt Baxter Luceno who does an excellent job playing Mortimer, the “serious” leading man who gets caught up in “unusual” circumstances. His comedic timing is superb. Robert LaMaire is engaging as Teddy, making his conviction that he is the president a pleasant eccen-
tricity. Paul Battiato as Jonathon is appropriately homicidal and impressively evokes Boris Karloff, who originated the role on Broadway. Morgan J. Nichols as Dr Einstein is a wonderfully physical actor. Jennifer Flynn plays Elaine, the minister’s daughter, with energy and personality, and is perhaps the only sane character. Leon Morgan, new this year, brings electricity to the part of O’Hara, a policeman and would-be playwright. He’s a pleasure to watch. Thomas Raniszewski plays a minister, a gentleman caller and an Irish cop, and while he does very well at all three, my favorite is the caller with the impossibly fake wig and moustache. Bob Reader and Jeff Sharkey are fantastic in their roles as Officer Klein and Mr Witherspoon. Last but not least, the set, designed by Gayle Stahlhuth, is perhaps her best ever. You really do find yourself in the Brewsters’ home. And you should pay it a visit. Learn more at www.eastlynnetheater.org or call 609-884-5898.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My best friend invited me over to dinner two weeks ago. I don’t get along with his wife, but I went. Dinner went well. His wife was unusually pleasant and just before dessert excused herself to go and have a smoke. It was then that my friend explained why he invited me to dinner. “We’re thinking of starting a family, but there are complications and we were wondering if you would be a sperm donor.” I said, “Oh, I see. We had dinner and now I’m dessert?” I told him I needed time to think, but my time is at an end. I don’t want to do this. I don’t like his wife. I don’t like the fact that she left the room so he could ask me this very important question which affects them both, and I don’t want to be tied to her for the rest of my life. What I don’t want is to lose my best friend. — Daddy Not Wannabe
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Dear Don’t Wannabe That loss is a chance you will have to take. This is a life-changing decision as you point out and you have every right to weigh it seriously. You might give her a pass on leaving the room. She is, we are sure, aware of your dislike of her and maybe thought she had a better chance if she left. In order to soften the blow, ask your friend out for an afternoon cocktail at Harbor View. The view may ease the tension. Focus on bringing a child into the world, not his wife’s shortcomings.
Dear Answer Lady I am a gay man who had a fling years ago with someone I continued to have a close but platonic relationship with until he moved to Maryland because of a job offer. For him our affair was apparently an experimentation and he subsequently went on to marry a woman who has been his wife for more than 10 years now. Well, last week his wife called to tell me that he died, very suddenly. The memorial service is being held near here because most of their fiends are in South Jersey. Knowing our past, she still asked me to do the eulogy. I agreed to it but am having second thoughts. I think maybe I’m just getting cold feet. — Nervous Speaker Dear Nervous It’s quite natural to be nervous, but who better than you to tell people what a great person he was. And kudos to his wife for asking you, also. Your eulogy will honor them both. Treat yourself to a smart dress shirt at Galvanic to give yourself some confidence.

Susan Tischler on the happenings and hecklings at Cape May City Council QUOTE OF THE NIGHT “I’m having a serious problem with my hearing aid. I put it in the shop and asked them for a lender. I don’t know who had this one first, but I keep hearing a message, ‘Keep America great again.’” — Gus Mosso, vice-president Village Green Civic Association adding levity to a council clearly at odds with itself. GOOD NEWS New Kids On The Block CMPD turned out to welcome two new police officers into their ranks. Chief Tony Marino appeared before council last month explaining the difficulty the department is having hiring new officers. Five are needed — the two hirees help close that gap. Ten-year veteran officer Colt Gibson is from the Vineland-Millvale area. Officer Thomas Moore of Ocean City, summered in Cape May growing up and worked at HotDog Tommy’s some of that time, clearly giving him a leg up on the Cape May culture. Happy 150th Birthday Mayor Chuck Lear and Councilmember Stacy Sheehan led the effort to acknowledge and honor the owners

of the eight homes known as Stockton Row Cottages. Among the historic property owners was octogenarian Laurice Albed who is only the second owner to occupy her Gurney Street house in 150 years. The Albeds bought the home from one of the two developers of the Stockton Row Cottages, E.A. Warren. The group received a proclamation for their dedication in preserving history. Or as Fred Echeverria, owner of the Gingerbread Cottage, 28 Gurney Street, said, “You don’t own an historic property; you are merely stewards of it.” REGULAR NEWS Get Bikes Off Beach Avenue was one of
the driving messages of the Seawall & Promenade Committee. Chairperson Scott Oswald and committee members Louie and Heather Bruno appeared before council to discuss their recommendations. Among them, they called for an expanded and upgraded Promenade beginning at Jackson Street going north, making room for bike riders and pedestrians to co-exist more smoothly than they are already and get them off Beach Drive. Dr Oswald said a bike lane would eliminate the current “free for all” and create a “safer environment.” The widening project (which would cost an estimated $350,000 and potentially be paid for through a Betterment Fund) would take bike traffic off Beach. Currently bikers, pedestrians, surreys and cars all use the same roadway. Dr Oswald likened driving down Beach to “playing a video game. It is a mass of confusion of a heavily trafficked area with no bike lane.” He admitted that the recommendation is “not ideal but the best solution” given that “we have limited options.” He concluded, “what I don’t want is inaction.” Ahhh how cute is that? Apparently, he is new

to the ways of government “progress.” SAME OLD, SAME OLD “I don’t work for you.” — Like Sisyphus pushing that boulder up the hill in the depths of Hades to no avail, Councilmember Zack Mullock once again introduced a resolution which went down to defeat in a 3-2 vote. Details Please! The resolution would have required Advisory Committees to “satisfy Open Public Meetings Act Requirements” that commissions and boards are subject to. The whole matter took the usual turn into Bizarro World as soon as the resolution was introduced. It seems that Mullock sent City Solicitor Frank Corrado a draft outlining what he would like the resolution to include. Corrado wrote the resolution which was included on the evening’s agenda. Once the resolution was introduced, the solicitor proceeded to deliver the death blow to the resolution by outlining in detail why the resolution was ill-advised. Mullock asked why Corrado did not call him to iron out the differences. Corrado shot back, “Because I don’t work for you. I work for council.” Fun Fact: What Advisory Committees are we talking about? The VERY high-profile Public Safety Building, the Lafayette Park, Master Plan, Municipal Building & Properties, Beach Safety, Bike & Pedestrian, Seawall/Promenade... yeah – a lot. So what went wrong this time? It would appear the problem centers around the explicit reference in the resolution to the Open Public Meetings Act which requires boards, commissions and government entities to publish ahead of time when they are going to meet and provides for closed session meetings. The solicitor maintained that Advisory Committees are formed specifically to avoid those requirements and asking them to adopt to that standard “deprives Advisory Committees of some that flexibility.” Mullock said he never asked that they be required to adhere to the Open Public Meetings Act but instead asked for four things: posting and publication of meeting dates; announced agendas; opening the meetings up to public comment and formal minutes taken and approved. Hark! Resolution to the resolution? Councilmember Tricia Hendricks offered a resolution to the resolution dilemma by suggesting that a resolution be rewritten formalizing protocols for Advisory Committees for those who are currently not adhering to them already. The city solicitor said he would do that and apologized if he misunderstood Mullock’s intentions. When are we meeting? What time? Why then? It would appear council cannot even agree on
a time for the PSB Advisory Committee and USA Architects to present their conceptual designs to the public for the construction of the proposed facility. Councilmember Shaine Meier, who is council’s liaison to the PSB Advisory Committee, set the meeting tentatively for October 15 and “early in the morning” because council will also meet on that date at 6pm. He was, however, hesitant to state firmly that the meeting would absolutely take place on that date lest the committee prove to be not ready. IN CASE YOU FORGOT: The last time such a meeting was scheduled, it was cancelled at the last minute because bids for the project came in WAY over budget by like $10 million over. Councilmember Sheehan, along with Mullock, have repeatedly asked for a public forum to outline the plans for the PSB to keep the public informed. Sheehan objected to holding the presentation in the morning when people may be working and unable to attend. Meier said it was hard to get all the parties together on a single date, namely CMFD Chief Alex Coulter and CMPD Chief Tony Marino. “The chiefs are key players in the study,” said Meier. “I thought USA architects were the key players in the study,” countered Sheehan. Hendricks said a morning meeting would be optimum for “our senior citizens, many of whom have trouble going out at night.” Mullock laughed at the comment and said, “That’s ridiculous.” The Result? An Octobrt 15 meeting. Sometime in the morning. Maybe. Retreat? In the public comment section of the meeting resident and Cape May Taxpayers Association board member Bill Seeger, observing that council was having their issues, suggested the lot consider having a retreat “so you can get your heads together.” Leaving one to ponder what that would like. Three of them sailing off on AJ Meerwald while the other two left on the Cape May Whale Watcher, while the city manager, assistant city manager, city clerk and city solicitor saddled up to the bar ordering, “One bourbon, one scotch, one beer?”
September 26, 2019 Who did you consult? Richard Meyers, vice-president of the Washington Street Mall Management Co, aka the Business Improvement District (BID), took to the podium comment on the proposed ordinance regarding the ban of single use plastic bags. The ordinance is in the works and will be presented for introduction at the next council meeting, according to the city solicitor. As proposed, it would not only ban the use of plastic bags but enforce a five-cent penalty to customers for the single use of paper bags as well. Meyers said the BID was in favor of the plastic bag ban but said “we cannot get behind” the five-cent charge, calling it “a logistic nightmare.” He also said that at the August 20 council meeting, Mullock, the BID council liaison, asked if the BID was consulted. Hendricks, he said, stated that the Environmental Commission (which spearheaded the recommendations) had had several discussions with the BID and were involved in the entire process. “This,” [the August 20th meeting],” he said, “was the first I heard about it.” Meyers said the BID board met a week later and “no one on the board had heard of it.” He suggested instead the ban on plastic go forward and a transition period to “educate the public” on the need to conserve precede any surcharge. “We would love to work with the Environmental Commission,” he said, “but have not been given that chance.” Hendricks countered, citing an “event” held by the Environmental Commission in City Hall in which a film was shown and featured a “room filled with bags from local merchants.” Meyers asked if members of the BID board were included. Hendricks said she had just gotten a list of BID board members and would pass it on to the Environmental Commission. Outer Limits Moments One would presume that Mullock, the BID liaison sitting to Hendrick’s right, would have been able to provide her with the BID roster at a moment’s notice, once asked; and that he would have had knowledge of any gathering which would affect the Mall merchants if so notified. Perhaps they need to adjust their channels to a different frequency.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
hey dance among the leaves like animated sparks, a wholly New World bird family whose 56 or so species have captivated observers since Alexander Wilson, the “father of American Ornithology,” who made six trips to Cape May, discovered among other birds a species he named Cape May Warbler. A misnomer, really, insofar as this yellow-tinged boreal breeder is only passing through Cape May, en route to the West Indies. Your best chances for seeing them are the circle gardens in Cape May Point where setophaga tigrina can be found attending the sap wells of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, another migrant through whose symmetrical borings ooze sap and attract insects. Cape May Warbler is also pretty common among the red cedar just north of the Hawk Watch Platform in Cape May Point State Park, where new birders can also rely upon the assistance of veteran birders to distinguish Cape May Warbler from the much more common Yellow-rumped Warbler. But if you simply want to enjoy the ani-
mation without pinning names to individual species, that’s fine. Just know that in addition to warblers, there are vireos, kinglets and gnatcatchers, all bound by their affinity for insect prey but distinguished by bill shape and hunting behavior. Vireos are sluggish, kinglets hover and gnatcatchers are hyper-active. Back to warblers, over one thousand American Redstart were counted in one day at Higbee Beach last week. The black-andorange males look dressed for Halloween,
while females and immatures are distinguished by orange panels in the tail that they fan and flash to flush insect prey. A good place to look for these and the ultra dapper and aptly named Black-throated Blue Warbler are the tiny woodlands next to the Northwood Center, in Cape May Point. Binoculars are useful, particularly for birds that play fair by moving slowly or standing still, birds like Ovenbird and Worm-eating Warbler, a caramel-colored beauty. It’s possible to find a dozen or more warbler species in that little copse of woods after a night characterized by light, northwesterly winds. If the morning is cool, focus your attention on the sunny side of East Lake Drive but, please, please, do not block traffic. See great things. By November, the show is over and most of those warblers will be safely ensconced in the tropical forests of southern Mexico and Central America with whom we have had an avian fair trade agreement going on centuries. Cape May is just a transit point between Canada and the tropics.
