Bavarian food and drink. Local artisans. More lederhosen than you can shake a sausage at. Visitors to Cape May enjoyed all this at the island’s annual Oktoberfest on historic Jackson Street. In pictureperfect weather on September 28, attendees enjoyed authentic oompa music as they strolled a German promenade… or holed up in the beer garden. (Yeah, we saw you.) The countdown to next year’s event has already begun, though waiting is sure to be the (brat)wurst. In the meantime, prost! SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS
Weird Sea Creature
Female seahorses lay up to hundreds of eggs in the abdomen pouch of a male. He carries these eggs until they hatch about 45 days later, an adorable squad of peanut-sized cuties who cling together to avoid predators. While most are small, some grow to be a foot tall. They are experts at camouflage, changing colors to blend in with coral or seaweed. Setting them apart from other fish, these guys swim upright. And, like monkeys, they use their tails to grab hold of things.
Did You Know?
Did you know Cape May was named among the eight most adorable beach towns in America by Good Morning America? How did we make the cut? “Different from the Jersey Shore image that MTV portrays, Cape May is an adorable beach town almost as far south as Washington, D.C.,” they said. “It has loads of Victorian B&Bs and quaint shops selling saltwater taffy, frozen custard, and antiques. The family-friendly town is very walkable and activities range from parasailing and paddleboarding to brewery or lighthouse tours.” Good Morning, indeed!
What We’re Reading
The Lottery By D.K. Wall Set in a small Appalachian town, this heartbreaking and dramatic novel raises the question: Is overcoming one’s past ever possible?

Here’s what the EZ team had for lunch this week
E
very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. Where We Ate: Tisha’s on the Washington Street Mall. The anniversary: This is the restaurant’s 30th year in business. The roller coaster of emotion: Happy: Hey, it’s a beautiful day. Let’s eat outside on Tisha’s beautiful patio! Sad: Oh, look, the covered patio is full, because it’s a great spot for people-watching on a pleasant afternoon. Ecstatic: But, wait! Tisha’s has a back patio that we totally forgot about, where you can also eat al fresco and people-watch on a beautiful day! Score! The server: The very cool Jill, who lived in her van for eight months. No, really! An ambassador for the nonprofit 1 Piece Each, she traveled the east coast to promote a sustainable, eco-friendly lifestyle. After coming home to Cape May in July, she organized a beach cleanup at Higbee’s. As if that’s not cool enough? She picked up an omnivorous lizard called an Argentine Tegu in Florida that she keeps as a pet. His name is Tony. We forgot to ask how he enjoys #vanlife. The food: We ordered the lobster bisque, and it was divine. Divine, we tell you! The buffalo chicken salad was buffaloaded with flavor. And the southwest grilled chicken sandwich… let’s just say there was a considerable amount of hand-swatting involved. The conversation: Do you ever think about how crazy it is that the universe just goes on (and on) forever? Like, it never stops. It just keeps going. And going! And don’t even get us started on how it’s expanding. How — how!? — can something that goes on forever get any bigger?! It’s all too much! We just can’t take it! Minds blown! The missed opportunity: We bypassed the loaded fries (crispy bacon, sautéed onions, jalapeño peppers, cheddar cheese wiz, pepper mayo), and we don’t have many regrets, but that’s up there, man. The consensus: Eat at Tisha’s. Think about the universe. Have your mind blown twice!

This week, Eric Fletcher from Carney’s is up. How long have you been bartending? Eight years. Favorite drink to make? Margaritas. I like to make mine fresh by hand squeezing limes which makes a huge difference. What’s your bartending pet peeve? When customers wave me down and aren’t ready to order. Seems to be a common theme among bartenders. If you do this, STOP! Dream job? Coach in the NFL.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
een meeting and chatting with many wonderful locals and tourists, all of whom are surprised to learn that not only did I have about 15 short stories published in this magazine between 2006 and 2010, but that the first four (Murder-Oke!, The Five Stages of Death, The Celestial and The Reindeer, the Elf and the Attic Vent) were collected for a paperback anthology, with a fifth new story (The Jetty) added just for the book, the way your favorite musician puts two new songs on their greatest hits collection so you have to buy it. So, in case you forgot or were unaware, yes, I do have a book out, Murder-Oke! & Other Spooky Cape May Tales. The stories are a lot like this column, with more murder and drunken elves. I’d tell you where to buy it but I don’t believe it’s in any shops (aside from the Cape May County Library system) so you’ll have to Google it. Last I checked you could get it for $.01 (that’s one penny) on Amazon. A bargain at twice the price! For what it’s worth, the story that seems to stick most with people is The Jetty, which
came from an idea I’d been kicking around for 20 years and was written in about 16 hours. We hope to have another collection out this winter, but I feel like I’ve been saying that for the last 11 winters. But this time we mean it! Some of my finest work (The Boat, Dead & Breakfast, Zmas) is yet undiscovered by most of you. And please note the qualifier of MY finest work which is pretty okay, but you should manage your expectations. I dropped so many spoons and plates at the Exit Zero Filling Station last week you’d think I play wide receiver for the Eagles.
Matt Luceno, currently toiling for East Lynne Theater Company in Arsenic & Old Lace (I’m not sure if he plays the arsenic or the old lace) popped by the Rusty Nail last Sunday to catch a set and WE’RE BEST FRIENDS NOW! (Am I too clingy? This comes off a little clingy…) Thanks, Matt, and I agree we should be playing just about every song from Paul Simon’s Graceland. And it really was Locals’ Summer last Sunday, with various Marinos (Barb and Tony), Johnsons (Laurie and Leif), Cookes (Suzanne and John), Murrays (Ginny and Hugh) and assorted clingers and hangers-on. You know, the people you see in March and ask, “Are you ready for summer?” then don’t see again for four months and ask, “Can you believe how fast the summer went?” and everyone looks five years older. (Except the ladies, of course.) I love playing gigs with my man, Tim Joyce, as we complete our fifth season together as musical partners. But it can be a little… challenging getting him back from break. I’ll tap him on the shoulder or give him

the universal wrist-tap, meaning “it’s time.” He’ll say, “Already?” then snap into action, eating three more French fries, talking to six more people, and getting himself another cup of coffee while his singer stands on stage rubbing his temples. So basically our break ends as soon as our break starts because Tim needs the whole break to come back from break. It’s just math. Segue Alert: Speaking of music, my calendar is about to get confusing as hell, and I don’t really want to stop the show, but I thought you might like to know (sorry, I only speak in Beatles lyrics) that I’ll be singing at Exit Zero Filling Station on Rocktown Tuesday nights starting... two days ago, backed up by my Wildwood Wing Man, Bill Caterini. Rocktown Tuesdays are a lot of fun with some excellent $5 (!) drink specials and our always-amazing array of curries and burgers. New Executive Chef Bill MacClemmy has put some nifty touches on some of our classic dishes that you’ll have to come see to believe. Rocktown Tuesdays are generally a little rowdier than your average Tuesday at EZFS, which is where Caterini and I come in, as we are also a little rowdier than your average Tuesday. I’m thrilled to be back working on a regular basis with Bill. Tim and I will continue playing Saturday nights and, starting the 18th, Fridays, as well. So much music! And don’t forget about Billy Joel (heh, typo said Billy Jowl, which is a great name for a Billy Joel tribute) with The Strangers at Carney’s on Sunday the 13th, 7-11. (I’d put all this in my ad but Jack Wright likes to bump mine if he can sell a bigger one.) Author’s Note: Stepped out for a couple hours mid-column to see Ad Astra, the new Brad Pitt sci-fi flick. In short, the first hour is really pretty great. The second hour runs out of story so there’s lots of psychobabble-y gobbledygook and WAY too long close-ups of Tommy Lee Jones. Not mad I saw it, would also not have been mad to have not seen it. (Man, I
October 3, 2019 can really turn a phrase, sometimes, can’t I?) The boys and I always make a point of hitting Stone Harbor Pizza Pub before the movie, then Springer’s Ice Cream after. I’ll be happy if/when Frank’s reopens in Rio Grande, but I’ll miss my days out with my fellas. (Owen is doing well so far in his first semester at Rowan; he has joined several theater and music clubs and played approximately 1,000,000 hours of Destiny.) Forced myself to keep watching The Deuce, and turns out it’s a pretty good show. If you can get past the core subject matter (the dawn of the Golden Age of Porn in 1970s New York and all that goes with it) there are some great performances and interesting storylines. It’s no Sopranos or Deadwood, but there are worse ways to kill an hour. Made myself a nice, healthy breakfast of eggs, wheat toast and a bunch asparagus on Saturday (I’m down about seven pounds, thanks for noticing) and spent the rest of the day trying to find the sewage leak every time I peed. Then I remembered I ate a bunch of asparagus. Have I asked who Meerwald is and why he wants me to go sailing with him? Very stalker-y. Nineteen years ago this Monday I had the distinct pleasure of watching the beautiful woman who would soon become my wife walk towards me down the beach behind Henry’s. Two hundred-plus guests, family and friends, and a few surfers, looked on. Twice that day, I nearly lost my ring, first in the sand during the ceremony, second dancing with my mom. Laughed it off at the time, now can’t imagine my life without it. Sometimes it’s loose, sometimes (most times) it’s tight, but it always reminds me of Cath. I’m happy she decided to audition for that little dinner theater in Cape May 25 years ago. It changed our lives. Mine for the better. Happy anniversary. And the over/under was 18.5, so pay up, suckers. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
W
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
e must prepare for electrical cars and limit the use of gasoline-powered ones. All while preserving our masculinity, which as we all know, will be undermined by the move away from fossil fuels. To that end, we are offering a subsidized conversion service, so that your truck, while powered by battery rather than gasoline, will have a small device added to the bottom that will heat a quantity of oil and pump it out the (redundant) tailpipe in the form of manly smoke. And when one depresses the accelerator pedal, a signal will be sent to a record player under the hood, and a deafening roar will be heard. We are offering an extra here, that the sound can be customized and be one of four of the most manly noises: (a) the roar of a bare-chested young man entering The Ugly Mug on a Friday night, (b) a Sumatran Tiger during mating season, (c) the legendary crooner Tom Jones bashing out his hit song “Delilah”, (d) an Apollo rocket launching. Also, we will be adding one of a range of masculinity-boosting essentials to every
vehicle, such as the subtle-but-effective “AllState Arm-Wrestling Champion” bumper sticker or an automated box on the dash that will randomly puff out some powerful and non-ambiguous old-style colognes (such as Old Spice, or Denim, “The Scent of a Man”). We have been trailing an automatic temporary-tattoo applier that will, when the car is motionless at lights, quickly spray out a tattoo that suggests direct heterosexuality: a pair of chaps, for example, or two muscly men wrestling. We may delay that, though, as in testing,
Find Your Way Back...
one driver was leaning sideways to change the radio station (you can have anything so long as it’s country, and sung by a man over 45) and the tattoo — a tough-guy mustache of the sort favored by local law enforcement – was stretched rather wide across his upper lip, almost from ear to ear. It gave him something of the look of the young Freddie Mercury, which to our surprise, was actually pretty damn masculine, especially when paired with a little peaked leather cap. On a more practical level, we have decided against those time-consuming charging stations, and instead have licensed that excellent and eccentric Exit Zero Filling Station to install 150 simultaneous car power outlets, each of which will plug into your vehicle and allow you to drive AND charge at the same time, so long as you don’t exceed the onemile range of the extension cable. And are courteous about rewinding it all neatly when you return, of course, using a button similar to those on vacuum cleaners to reel in the power cord, along with who and whatever has gotten tangled in the cable along the way.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’
ome sweet home can be a scary place. Your cleaning cupboard is full of chemicals that can kill you. Floor polish is flammable. Bleach mixed with ammonia makes a toxic gas. Oven and drain cleaners are corrosive. Antifreeze is poisonous to humans and pets. Air freshener is full of formaldehyde. Even dryer lint is a hazard — 100 people are injured by fires caused by lint every year. In the 19th century, things were even riskier. Arsenic was a common household item, used to make tallow candles burn better, to dye wallpaper or cloth a brilliant green, as food coloring in candy, or as rat poison. It was also a beauty aid — mixed with vinegar, it was rubbed on the skin to improve complexions. Users made themselves sick without knowing it. Exposure to small amounts of arsenic over time leads to abdominal pain, vertigo, delirium, dehydration and, eventually, death. The slow decline mimicked natural sicknesses, so accidental ingestion went unnoticed, and intentional poisoners usually went unpunished.
The current play at the East Lynne Theater Company, Arsenic and Old Lace, takes a comic look at a pair of poisoners, in a story based on actual events. In 1907, Amy Duggan Archer Gilligan opened the Archer Home for Elderly People and Chronic Invalids in Windsor, Connecticut. For “convenience,” residents transferred their money to Sister Amy, who apparently kept costs down by dispatching troublesome patients, along with a husband or two. She was convicted in 1916 of the murder of five patients, though she was suspected of killing 35 more. She was sentenced to death, but the governor commuted her sentence, and she spent the rest of life in
jail. Oddly, the state’s most famous poisoner spent her time working in the kitchen. Playwright Joseph Kesselring turned to this story for inspiration, and took the title from a sentimental 1902 novel, Lavender and Old Lace. The result is the tale of Abby and Martha Brewster, two sweet, older sisters, Mayflower descendants, who take in lodgers. Mostly, they provide excellent accommodations, but they are prone to murdering bothersome lodgers and burying them in the basement. Conveniently, one resident relative thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt, so he’s happy to dig the graves for “yellow fever victims.” Another relative has to come to visit while he recovers from plastic surgery to escape a murder charge, and he’s brought along his creepy surgeon. When nephew, Mortimer, brings his new wife to visit, mayhem ensues. Arsenic and Old Lace runs through October 12, Wednesday through Saturday at 8:00pm. Tickets are $35, with discounts for seniors, students and military. East Lynne performs at The First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street, Cape May.

Cape May Stage’s ‘The Taming’ is reviewed by Veronica Scutaro
I
n 2013, Lauren Gunderson wrote The Taming, a play about political division, extremism, a patriarchy that can’t seem to get out of its own way. This political farce is the newest offering from Cape May Stage, running through November 1. This timely play gives us the opportunity to laugh at all the things we see and hear going on politically today. Is Miss Gunderson psychic or simply a savvy observer of the human condition? Her play hit its stride during the 2016 election (she gave away the rights to readings for free if the reading took place on inauguration day). This play beautifully reflects the Stage’s theme of uncertainty for this year. Set in a hotel room at the Miss America pageant, Elise Hudson (Katherine aka Miss Georgia y’all), Holly Anne Williams (Patricia-Red State) and Dana A. Iannuzzi (Bianca-Blue State) play their roles with an energy so engaging the viewer feels more like a voyeur than audience. These three women come from different places and have deeply divided views about the future of America.
The three have very different goals as well. Patricia wants to achieve her own political ambition through a senator, a man, over whom she has great influence and power. Bianca is a blogger with 2,000,000 followers who wants to transform government and society through social media. Katherine wants them both to get on her political bandwagon and reinvent the American system by rewriting the Constitution, and she deeply believes that the three of them together can truly effect change.
As Miss Georgia, Elise Hudson is magnificent. Patricia, the only politically connected one of the group, tries to convince the women in the room that liberals are “bad” and conservatives are “good.” This certainly falls flat with Bianca, a 20-something with her own agenda to save endangered species. When all is said and done, the three heroines realize that advancing change to allow for the evolution of a country, its government and the governed, requires thought, the setting aside of personal agendas and the ability to listen to what is necessary to achieve those goals. The theme here is rich and has many thought provoking issues that are acted in rapid succession with tremendous impact. But pay attention to the attention to detail on the set (hint: note the room number). So what say ye? Banish the electoral college? Set limits on Supreme Court Justice terms? Whatever your opinion or politics, this play will remind you where we came from. Maybe that will help clear the uncertainty of where we’re headed.

ARIES: You will attend Oktoberfest at Morey’s Piers this weekend to see their giant inflatable octopus dressed in lederhosen and enjoy a Bavarian feast. And, okay, to enjoy some bier on the pier, too. TAURUS: You will hear that the hilarious new play at Cape May stage, The Taming, is an all-female cast. You will bust out your favorite “The future is female” tee-shirt and buy tickets. GEMINI: You will catch wind that Terry O’Brien is now playing Tuesdays at Exit Zero Filling Station. You will cancel all other Tuesday night plans for the foreseeable future. CANCER: You will fly a kite at the Cove in order to get in touch with your inner child. You will end up accidentally divebombing your grandmother, who will throw your kite into the ocean, which will cause a pod of passing dolphins to leap out of the water, which will inspire a movie idea from Anne Hathaway, who will be driving a nearby jetski. LEO: You will adopt a dog from the Cape May County Animal Shelter. You will name him Winnie the Pooch. VIRGO: You will drive by the Harriet Tubman museum project on Lafayette Street. You will be so inspired by this example of community unity, you will donate your milkshake money for the rest of the year. LIBRA: In celebration of your birthday season, you will host a s’more roasting party. A vicious debate will ensue over how burnt is too burnt for a marshmallow, and you will abandon all your friends. SCORPIO: A stranger will ask if you’re interested in seeing some bangers. You will punch him before you realize he’s talking about vintage cars at this weekend’s Race of Gentlemen in Wildwood. SAGITTARIUS: You will prepare a dress rehearsal of your Halloween party. But you will turn on the fog machine too early and spend the next three weeks lost in your own home. CAPRICORN: You will make a vow to keep up with falling leaves in your yard in a timely manner. You will watch old episodes of Frasier instead. AQUARIUS: You will enjoy the homemade pepperoni on the Boiler Room pizza. For weeks, you will have a recurring dream in which you are skipping romantically through a field of wildflowers with pepperoni. PISCES: You will meet your soulmate at the top of the lighthouse. You will named your first born Lighthouse.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady As you know it’s a small town. I grew up here. Left to go to college and am back working at our family business. The problem is — one of my old high school mates hits me up for a loan every time I see him. He pays it back, but it’s just torture running into him. I just don’t have it in me to say no. One day, he hit me up twice, forgetting that he tapped me earlier in the morning. Is there no nice way to stop this? — Can’t Say No Dear Can’t Oh my. You have what is clinically diagnosed as Nice Guy Syndrome. People like your high school chum can see you coming a mile away. Apart from hiding out in your car, crossing the road and hiding behind bushes, your options are: lie, telling him you’re broke or framework this by telling him you will lend
Wise answers to perplexing questions
him a certain amount once a month and no more and pray he doesn’t pay you back so you never have to lend him anything again. BUT, you MUST stick to the agreement and not relent mid-month. Think of it like parenting, you must be good to your word or you’ll be hiding in the bushes forever. Meanwhile, go to Uncle Bill’s Pancake House and order a stack of blueberry pancakes to fortify you. Dear Answer Lady My daughter has informed me that she is naming her soon-to-be-born baby
after her husband’s father. My husband, her father, died earlier this year and I am so upset about this I cannot even speak to her. When I asked her why, she said, she felt pressured by her mother-in-law. I don’t even think she wants to do this. I know damn well they will come up with some lame compromise in which the baby’s middle name will be my husband’s. Short of disinheriting them, is there nothing I can say to change this? — Outraged Mother Dear Outraged Absolutely not. You need to get over this. The decision is not yours to make. The same argument can be made for your daughter’s mother-in-law and you have every right to be upset, but you should be more concerned about the welfare of your daughter and her baby. Recognize the fact that she is being manipulated by her husband and his family and don’t make her life even worse. Extend an olive branch and take her shopping at Happy Baby, followed by dinner at Gecko’s. Your daughter needs your support, not your threats.

Bird Droppings
W
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
hen the first tang of autumn lies heavy in the air, I get that ol’ Cape May feeling. It’s a little like a first date and the homecoming parade with a touch of wistfulness thrown in. It’s when I step onto the porch and test the wind direction with my cheek before I am conscious of doing so. West wind, good. East wind, ugh. Northerly wind yippee with fudge sauce and whipped cream. It’s the passage of a cold front that sends fall migrants our way. Catching a tail wind, warblers and other neotropical migrants fill the night sky with their frail call notes, encouraging each other across the trackless miles. That big dark span of planet to the left is open ocean. “We don’t want to be there,” the tired waifs are saying to each other. “Hey, what about down there? That sliver of land between ocean and bay.” “Yeah, that looks good. Beats crossing that big dark stretch ahead.” And it is good, this welcoming peninsula
whose forests and backyard rose tangles will provide food and shelter for weary migrants. All habitat in Cape May is critical habitat August through December, when millions of migrants will pass this way, many for the first time. In autumn, the ranks of southbound birds are bloated with juveniles whose foraging skills are rudimentary. The untrimmed tangle near your fence may mean the difference between life and death to a young Mourning Warbler or Hermit Thrush. And after the sun sets thermals rising in
the air over Cape May will be festooned with migrating hawks. Sharp-shinneds and Cooper’s in the morning; falcons like American Kestrel and Merlin in the afternoon. Why this temporal break down? We don’t know. But if you want to see Melins and Peregrines you should time your visit to the hawk watch platform for an afternoon blessed with northwest to northerly winds. Osprey? Dawn to dusk. Harriers? Likewise. Bald Eagles? Mid-morning to mid-afternoon. They’ll be very high and often come in pairs. Find one, look ahead of it’s flight path. No luck. Pick up the original bird and backtrack. Oh boy. Fall in Cape May. We wait the whole year for this and now is the time. Go out and catch an eyeful and bring binoculars. No binoculars. Arrive early to thehawk watch platform and there may be a loaner or two courtesy of those fine folks at Swarovski. Yes, you have to give them back. That’s the nature of a short-term loan. The images you reap are yours to keep. So get out there and discover what makes Cape May a world-famous birding destination.
