The Bean Is The Word! Last Saturday, West Cape May painted the town green with the 35th annual Lima Bean Festival in Wilbraham Park. The quirky event, which featured live music and foodand-craft vendors, celebrates the Cape’s agricultural history. The lowly lima, once grown by Lenni-Lenapi Native Americans on this peninsula, became a huge source of income for local and regional farmers in the 1950s. Today, a lima bean kind and queen are crowned at the yearly festival, to a soundtrack of the “Lima Bean Blues.” Right: Timoteo, Nevio, Hilary, Debbie, Kaytlin, Kelly from Good Earth eatery

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

The closest you’ll come to a sea serpent? The oarfish. The longest bony fish in the sea, it looks like a herring, except it can group up to 56 feet. It’s possible to eat oarfish, but they taste gooey, flabby and gelatinous in texture. While they may look scary, they’re harmless to humans… they don’t even have teeth (they live on tiny plankton that don’t require chewing). In Japan, it’s believed that oarfish washing up on shore signals a coming hurricane.

Did You Know?

Cape May is a spooktacular place for Halloween. Our charmed city has been featured on the SyFy channel’s Ghost Hunters and on Destination America’s Haunted Towns. Oh, and also on The Travel Channel’s Most Haunted Towns. According to that program, “Following the Civil War, locals with a penchant for seances, spirit boards and Spiritualism may have opened a paranormal portal on the Jersey Shore that remains open to this day.”

Here’s what the EZ team had for dinner this week

E

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Scola, on Mechanic Street in Cape May Court House. The trip: That’s right. We went (gasp!) over the bridge. Crazy, right?! The connection: Scola is brought to you by the Karapanagiotis brothers — Yianni and Peter — who are also behind George’s Place and Shamone in Cape May. They also introduced us to The YB, now run by a former employee, Brandon Stickle. The building: A former shoe store, built in 1908. It’s where the EZ crew used to get our boots fixed. The vibe: Complete with exposed brick, soft lighting, votive candles, and white-linen tablecloths, this place is a hip, intimate, contemporary American BYO. Or, as The Press of Atlantic City calls it, a “foodie paradise ensconced in an historic, hipster haven” with a certain “urban swagger” and “some seriously groovy throwback 70s funk.” (That comes from the tchotchke decor.) The amuse bouche: Complimentary strawberry ceviche. Delicate and delightful. The apps: Fish tacos with pineapple salsa — fresh and light and lovely. Lobster mac and cheese — the ideal ratio of gooey to crispy. And a haloumi cheese and mushroom dish — mouthwatering. Warm mushrooms and warm cheese always does it for us. The mains: The special parmesan-crusted cod, and the duck confit with raspberry balsamic glaze. Scola? More like Whoa-a! The conversation: We assessed claims of prosperity through economic integration and the implications of globalization on social, political and cultural value systems domestically and abroad. Just kidding — we discussed how good the food was. But, like, we COULD discuss that other stuff if we wanted to… The takeaway: We know the thought of going over the bridge can be overwhelming. We’ve been there. But trust us, it’s worth it for a trip to Scola. Cape May will be right here waiting for you when you get back. The trend: Yianni K said, “Welcome to COHO,” as we walked in the door. Is Cape May Court House about to have a moment?

Undertow

P

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

retty interesting week here at Undertow Central, located in beautiful downtown Erma, home of the bathroom spricket, the new drone factory (itself being built by construction workers, who are nothing if not human drones, oh the irony) and a proposed $10m aquatic center that everybody wants to use and nobody wants to pay for and nobody will actually use once it’s built, just like that January 1 Planet Fitness account. It was another gig-ful week, with another gig-ful week looming, so I’m going to whisper to save my voice, if that’s okay. On Monday Tim (Joyce) and I (O’Brien & the aforementioned Joyce) finished our outdoor residency at Rusty Nail with a gig attended by numerous family and friends. Even my wife came out and sang a song (then made me go to Wawa and get her a sandwich). There were assorted Marinos and Hendersons there, and I’ve been remiss in not mentioning how often local serving legend Sean Farley is there to support us and always has kind words. But the most event-

ful part of the day occurred just before sunset. For most of the gig I serenely watched a large flock of tree swallows (or so I was told) take off and land on the beach, each time working their way south towards the Nail. It was quite lovely. And then, what’s the sound, OH MY GOD THEY’RE COMING RIGHT AT US! The flock (School? Gang? Pride? I don’t know…) swarmed through the bushes behind the stage with about 100 of them zipping past Tim and I, a few of them bumping into us and pooping on Tim’s hand along the way. I won’t lie; it was… an unsettling 30

seconds. But Tim got pooped on, so it was all worth it. The whole time I pictured birding weirdo Tom Johnson in his castle, watching through his crystal ball, rubbing his hands together, enacting his revenge. “Kill, me pretties! Kill!” On Tuesday, Cape May gadabout John Cooke and his lovely bride Suzanne made good on a decades-old promise to swing by Exit Zero Filling Station for a bite and a beverage of the Cape May Brewing Co. variety. It was our ever-growing Rocktown Tuesday, featuring Rocktown Vodka drink specials and fabulous live music provided by Bill Caterini and his very handsome vocalist (I). I owe John a drink. I’m hoping to hold out long enough for him to forget, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. He’ll follow me around for the next 20 years like Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men. Or The Terminator but, you know... beer. John and Suzanne were followed in short order by Ginny and Hugh Murray and their friend Donna… Smith? You know you’ve hit the map as Cape May’s hippest, fresh-

est drinkery when Ginny starts live-streaming Bill Caterini and his very handsome vocalist from your bar. While they hang out at some Shady Place That Shall Remain Nameless far too often for my liking, they are quality folk, like something out of a great Norman Lear sitcom from the 70s. Hugh Bet Your Wife! Wednesday and Thursday I got back on the EZFS floor as a server. Waiting tables is how I keep myself grounded, in touch with the Little People. Often, while chatting with my tables, someone (usually me) will casually mention the four bands he’s in, the column he writes, the book he’s had published, the movies he’s worked on, etc. My tables will go, “Wow, really?” And I’ll go, “Yep, I’m the most famous waiter you ever had.” Speaking of famous people who at some point in their lives were probably waiters (that’s a hell of a segure right there), as you probably all know, we had a couple of them in town last week, and I didn’t make either of them mad at me! As I sang at the Rusty Nail Friday night, a guy walked past and I thought, “That guy looks just like Alan Cumming.” (I’ll wait while you Google him and go, “Oh, that guy.”) Well, turns out it was Alan Cumming! Then I offered him my microphone and he looked tempted, then his people rushed him away lest he mix with the common folk. I hope to one day have people do the same for me. Saw him again Sunday night in the Brown Room after my Billy Joel show at Carney’s while I caught up with Steve Tzorfas (one of the three funniest people I know) and he seems like a perfectly nice fellow. Then over the weekend word (and picture) circulated that the Mighty Jason Segel (Marshall on How I Met Your Mother, one of the three funniest sitcoms of all time) was also in town. Not only that, he stopped into Ye Olde EZFS! Once for dinner and once to buy a hat! Later he stopped for coffee, walked the mall, threw some coins in the fountain, got

October 17, 2019 another coffee, scratched behind his left ear, then dropped out of sight of my high-powered binoculars. Had no personal encounter with him, but by all accounts he’s a nice guy. The Gentlemen. (Deep HIMYM reference, sorry.) Friday was my final final Rusty Nail gig of the season. It was my first gig with Al Olivero where he wasn’t behind a drum kit (Love Me Dudes, The Strangers, Terry O’Brien Band) and, I’m not gonna lie, I was a little nervous at the prospect of a lowly drummer coming out front on guitar and keyboard, but he crushed it. I would not hesitate to work another duo show with him. My only worry now is getting him back behind the drums after all this praise. Toothpaste out of the tube and all that. Awkward Moment of the Week: As happens quite often at any Cape Resorts establishment (Congress Hall, Brown Room, Boiler Room, etc.), a lovely woman in a wedding dress strolled through the Nail. And, as usual, I busted into “I’m Getting Married in the Morning” from My Fair Lady. That’s when another lovely lady in another lovely dress stared daggers at me and hissed, “She just got left at the altar…” Ah, ooh, okay, sorry… but… better left at the altar than married to an asshole. RIP Terry’s Egg Shaker, 1995-2019. It died after a brief illness and had its guts sprinkled in the sand in front of the Rusty Nail stage, those guts, ironically, also mostly sand. It leaves behind an identical egg shaker and a long legacy of doing shooka-shooka-shooka while Terry played the tambourine. In lieu of flowers, please send cash to 110Sunset Blvd, WCM, NJ. Song of the Week: “Let The Mystery Be” by Iris Dement. I am obsessed with this song ever since hearing it play over the opening credits of The Leftovers on HBO, which I’m also obsessed with. The Natalie Merchant/ David Byrne cover is fine, but this original version is gold. ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

adore Hallowe’en. And I detest people who do not use the proper apostrophe. Actually, I despair of the lack of proper apostrophes in society in general, and have been known to lecture an errant signwriter for omitting one, and thrash those who use them wrongly. Hallowe’en marks the time when the boundary between our world and the next weakens, allowing things through that are best never seen in daylight. Things that will suck the life from you, and leave you open mouthed in terror at their very existence. But enough of Wildwood. Where was I? Ah yes, Hallowe’en. We, of course, have the most majestic masked ball in the country, at the D’Catur Mansion, where all are welcome so long as their costume is judged to be grand enough. Judging takes place on the narrow plank across the Crocodile Pit, and those deemed to be just not trying hard enough are transformed, in a few seconds, to very convincing and suitably bloody Hallowe’en-ish decorations. I do find this winnows out those opportunists who have simply purchased a

foam “superhero” outfit on The Internet or come as a “Sexy” anything. That’s not to say we are prudes: why, I recall I was the toast of New York City the time I rode into Studiosomething-or-other naked, riding a white horse. At least, I think that was me: I had swigged liberally from a flask that someone had nefariously filled with liquid LHD, when I was in fact sure it contained only morphine. All I can say for sure was that I awoke several days after Hallowe’en, having lost all my clothes in a poker game, but in possession of

the title deeds for several thousand acres of the bottom of New Jersey. Anyway, in an effort to avoid over-feeding the crocs, we have decided to have annual themes as to the costumery expected. This year’s theme is “Ectoplasm and other Sticky Night-time Issuances,”, which I am sure will be correctly interpreted as Victorian and spooky, yet innocent in nature. That said, I do adore a double entendre, and would tell my favorite joke here, except that I think I have done so a dozen times before. What’s that? Oh well, if you will insist: “A woman goes into a cocktail bar and asks for a double entendre. So the barman gives her one.” Once you have finally managed to stop laughing, you might want to think hard about your costumes, given that the Grand Prize for the best dressed is Eternal Life. And the prize for worst costume is After Life. And let me tell you, that the D’Catur Mansion is quite the place to see ghosts come midnight on October 31, from previous last-place winners to the late and not very lamented Ma D’Catur herself. Who knows, you might join them!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Ghoul Spring Village

L

egend says that the veil between worlds is very thin this time of year — are you brave enough to explore the other side? Believers in the paranormal suggest that a variety of distinct beings inhabit the other world. There are encyclopedias detailing their similarities and differences, and, helpfully, the defenses humans can use against them. Ghosts are different from ghouls, and both are different from goblins — or fairies or gnomes. A ghost is the visible spirit of a dead person, especially one who died suddenly. Ghosts are said to have unfinished business on earth and are therefore tied to a specific earthly location. Ghosts may not know they are dead, which may cause agitation or confusion, but they are generally not considered dangerous and may therefore be ignored. Mischievous ghosts, or poltergeists, may be vandals, but still are often categorized as relatively harmless creatures. Goblins are “little folk,” like fairies or gnomes, but their tricks are more malicious than playful. In many tales, gob-

Hats

Tees

lins get the blame for stealing human infants and replacing them with their changelings. A goblin can be tricked into fleeing. A ghoul, on the other hand, is dangerous. Ghouls are evil spirits which rob graves and eat the dead flesh. Ghouls are not picky — they are also known to feast on living flesh when its handy, so ghouls may disguise themselves to draw victims. Bedouin tales tell of ghouls appearing in the desert as beautiful women to tempt travelers to their deaths, hiding their tracks by riding on dogs, and setting fires to draw loners away from busy paths. Stories caution travelers to look for the hooves — the only feature the ghoul’s

magic can not disguise. Once you spot a ghoul — or, rather, once a ghoul spots you — your only chance is to strike it dead with exactly one blow. A second blow revives the creature, and then you are doomed. Explore all kinds of ethereal beings at Ghoul Spring Village, October 25 and 26, from 6pm to 9pm at Historic Cold Spring Village. It’s Curse of the Mooncussers, a family-friendly haunted walk. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Enter from Seashore Road for this event, which will be held “rain or moonshine.” For more earthly fun, HCSV offers the Pumpkin Festival and Share the Harvest Food Drive on Saturday, October 19th from 10:00 to 4:00. This fun, free event presented by the Lower Township Rotary Club features pumpkin painting, a hayride, a haunted barn, games and crafts. There’s a children’s Halloween Parade at 11am — call 609-8867880 for parade registration information. Guests are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to the Share the Harvest Food Drive.

By Melissa Moschitto, founding artistic director of The Anthropologists

I

magine a one-person show that delivers a captivating physical performance to unearth the life, work and words of 17th century painter Artemisia Gentileschi. Inspired by every proclamation of ‘me too,’ The Anthropologists, a theatre collaborative, craft a startling portrait of a woman caught at the intersection of power, assault, and art. Declared “a powerful parallel to our current cultural moment” and “a solid, timely piece”, Artemisia’s Intent won Best Solo Drama at the 2018 Frigid Festival. See the production one night only, October 21, at Cape May Stage (capemaystage.org for details). The performance opens with the brilliant chiaroscuro of Artemisia’s masterpiece Judith and Her Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes, part of the permanent collection at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Dressed in gold, Judith prepares to escape victoriously with the head of her victim, just as a bright light shines in to reveal what she has done. Is she running away or hiding? She whispers fiercely — to an invisible companion? To invaders? To ghosts? To herself?

The light rises further to reveal an artists’ studio strewn with fabrics and brushes, golden frames suspended in the air. Not just any artist but Artemisia Gentileschi, the nearly-forgotten Baroque master painter. In fact, it is Artemisia herself, dressed in her signature gold, welcoming us into her studio where she has a thing or two to teach us. Over the course of the next hour, performer Mariah Freda deftly recreates Artemisia’s stunning artwork through precise physicality, weaving together the details of a life marked by tragedy and triumph. Artemisia speaks passionately and poignantly about her artistic vision, the arc of her

career and what it meant to be a woman artist in the 1600s. This performance transcends language through its rich baroque physicality, aided by the sumptuous, malleable visual design of designer Irina Kuraeva and the sound design of Adrian Bridges. Artemisia’s personal history is inextricably linked to her art, just as her struggles are forever connected to ours. Mariah skillfully portrays the women painted by Artemisia and is a compelling conduit for the voices of current day female artists, all of whom desire to shake off the shackles of the patriarchy. When creating this show, we were asking, what is lost in a culture that objectifies and oppresses women through sexual violence? Pressing together 400 years of history, the lineage from biblical myth to Italian Renaissance to present day is pulled surprisingly taught. Balancing humor, history and tragedy, The Theater Times hails the play as “astonishingly thorough... The Anthropologists charge forward with humor, intensity, and the madness of the moment.”

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady When my mother died last month, we took in her cat, Mr Bojangles, who is 10 years old. To say it hasn’t worked out well, is a gross understatement. Our own cat, Queen Elizabeth, picks a fight with Mr Bojangles all day every day. The problem being, Queen Elizabeth is small and gets the devil beat out of her every time by the very large Mr Bojangles. Both cats ruled the roost and sharing just is not in their vocabulary. We are heartbroken about the whole thing and wonder what you would suggest. — Cat Fight Referees Dear Referees With a name like Queen Elizabeth, how could it end any other way? She will fight to the death to reclaim her territory and both cats are wondering what they did to deserve this perceived assault. The best thing you can do

Wise answers to perplexing questions

is to consult your vet. The Answer Lady also suggests you pop over to Cape May Animal Outreach. They are wonderful and accustomed to such problems. You may have to resign yourself that Mr Bojangles will have to find another home with their help. He deserves a forever home without strife as does Queen Elizabeth, whom we are sure is also wondering where it all went wrong. Dear Answer Lady My wife wants us to renew our vows for our 25th wedding anniversary. Naturally,

she’s not just planning a simple ceremony and a small reception, but a full-on wedding for Pete’s sake with all five kids in the wedding party. I really object to this. I’d rather take her on a cruise; take her anywhere but be subjected to the torture and stress of a wedding. This is the very reason we eloped the first time. I feel no different 25 years later. Tell me I’m right. — Wedding Phobic Dear Phobic The Answer Lady absolutely will not tell you you’re right. You know why? Because you’re wrong. For Pete’s sake, your poor wife has been waiting to have a proper wedding for 25 years. Isn’t that punishment enough? You’re lucky she still wants to have the wedding. What The Answer Lady will strongly suggest, is that she not plan the event herself but enlist the aid of a wedding planner. Or pick a site like PSI, which is smallish yet elegant. With five kids it looks like it might be a bigger wedding, if so Congress Hall or any of the larger venues have consultants and they will be more than happy to take the burden and allow you both to enjoy what has obviously been a very successful run.

Bird Droppings

T

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

his time of year, all of the beautiful people are found at the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State Park. It’s the raised structure on the side of the parking lot where the lighthouse is not. It features an unbridled view east over Bunker Pond, orchestrated by a stellar cadre of seasonal interns, marshaled by an official hawk counter whose job is pinning names and numbers to the host of migrating hawks. Last Friday, under northwest winds, an avalanche of raptors passed, including 400 Merlin and nearly 1,000 American Kestrel. The platform is roomy enough to accommodate up to 200 visitors, which was about the number on hand to enjoy the autumn spectacle in The Raptor Capital of North America. Fifty thousand hawks per year is about average, and October is raptor prime time. You needn’t know anything about birds to witness one of the planet’s greatest spectacles. Like Woody Allen said, “just show up.” You’ll quickly find that bird watchers rank among the natural world’s finest

ambassadors and not a few annual visitors can trace their introduction to bird watching to an accidental visit to the hawk watch. Two regulars, Thane and Cathleen Maynard of Cincinnati, allow that this is their 35th year. Other regulars on hand this weekend were Professor John Smallwood and the members of his ornithology class from Montclair State. John is the leading authority on American Kestrel. Two people I engaged were a young couple from Manhattan, completely new to birding who saw

the crowd, felt the excitement and sauntered over to see what was happening. They enjoyed the hawks but were enthralled by the ten thousand or so Tree Swallows that massed over the bayberries like a hungry storm. We’re equal opportunity observers at the hawk watch. Whatever Ma Nature is serving, we’re savoring — monarch butterflies, to ibis to swans to soaring eagles. Bunker Pond is loaded with migrating waterfowl and unless the spotting scopes are trained on some perched Peregrine, they’re probably focused on the drake Eurasian Wigeon, back again for another season. If you have binoculars, bring them. If not, there are loaners available courtesy of those fine folks at Swarovski Optik. Arrive early and ask the interns about loaner bins and maybe tips for using them. Dawn to dusk, it’s the greatest show under the sky and its free. Come and get an eyeful and have an experience actually worth sharing on Facebook.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

MISSY is an eight year old lab mix who has experienced quite a bit of upheaval in her life. She is looking for a stable home that will return the affection she is anxious to give. She does well in the company of other dogs and will greet people happily when they approach her respectfully. Missy would thrive living with a family that gives her much needed attention.

MACK came to the shelter as a stray and is estimated at about 18 months old. Mack is friendly with staff and volunteers and craves human attention and interaction. He likes running in the exercise yard and enjoys walks. Mack is a good candidate for adoption with an active family with older kids or in an adult household. Adopt today!

Robert Panaccio, VMD Robert Moffatt, VMD Nancy Reilly, VMD Patricia J. Link, DVM

TEDDY is a small dog with a large personality. This tan handsome boy was brought to the shelter as a stray and was very intimidated the first few days. Due to his diminutive size, Teddy would be best suited to an adult home and one that would recognize his initial anxiety and proceed slowly. Adopt this little teddy bear today!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

JAGGER doesn’t quite have moves like Jagger, more like slinks away hoping someone will save him and let him play outside again! All little Jagger wants to do is hunt, sleep and sun bathe! Could you be the one who saves this outdoorsy kitty’s soul? Stop by the shelter and meet Jagger...he will be patiently waiting.

BIANCA is a Siamese and snowshoe mix. She’s also a senior princess who will likely have many eager suitors stopping by the shelter. Her vaccinations are up to date, she’s house-trained like a boss, and now all she needs is a good home with a deserving guardian. Think you’re cool enough to care for this hip cat?

SIR-TIGER of the Cape is his name! A truly heroic cat that knows no fear. Not from the small children or the large canine. He is as feisty as he is majestic. A knight of legend. No mouse can hide or ball can roll that Sir Tiger shall not hunt and find! So if you’re looking for a regal kitty to run the household, look no further. Adopt Sir Tiger today!
