Halloween Party At Fins Bar And Grille P18-30

Boos, Booze And Music For A Cause Exit Zero Filling Station was proud to once again host our annual fundraiser for the West Cape May Christmas parade, albeit a bit incongrously with a Halloween party, on Monday, October 28. O’Brien & Joyce provided the spooky soundtrack and Chef Bill MacClemmy & Co cooked up the frightentingly delicious food as locals and visitors alike contributed to this noble cause to the tune of $2645. That’s a lot of Jingle Bells! Thanks to all who participated, especially those who channelled the spirit and arrived in costume. More photographs in next week’s issue. Photo: Lisa, Hannah, Jim. SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS
Weird Sea Creature
Did You Know?
What We’re Reading
In Hawaii, the colorful triggerfish is known as the (brace yourself) humhumunukunukuapa’a. Say that five times fast. It has a powerful mouth for crushing crabs and sea urchins. Growing up to 10 feet, it comes with a set of spines to lock itself into crevices and hide from predators. Beautiful and temperamental, kind of like the EZ staff before breakfast.
Some say Cape May has gone to the dogs. Fair enough. The island is home to a 1,500-square foot dog park on Lafayette Street. Rather bring your pet to the beach? Check out Higbee on the Delaware Bay. As for accomodations, the Boarding House, BillMae Cottage, Marquis de Lafayette, Blue Fish Inn, Madison Avenue Beach Club, and Beach Shack all cater to dogs, as do several restaurants on the island. The Rusty Nail even offers a doggy menu and Bowser Beer. Fair warning: Dogs are not allowed on Washington Street Mall. Sometimes, life is ruff.
A Dangerous Man By Robert Crais A kidnapped girl, a family secret, a race against time. Who else but Elvis Cole and Joe Pike to take the case in their 18th adventure. A pulse-pounding thrill ride.

Here’s what the EZ team had for lunch this week
E
very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: Hemingway’s on the beachfront, in the Grand Hotel. Serving all day. The occasion: Lunch! The vibe: Classic. Casual. Unpretentious. The TVs: Six. High Definition. The seats: A four-top with an ocean view. Not a shabby way to spend a Wednesday afternoon, if we do say so ourselves. The manager: Sean Brown. He’s super friendly, and he told us the Grand Hotel is currently full of birdwatchers — not surprising this time of year. For a special meeting in the restaurant earlier in the week, they’d requested the TVs not be on for the Eagles game. Apparently that’s the wrong type of bird. (Badum-ching!) The fish: Sean answered our most pressing question: Yes, that 567-pound blue marlin on the wall IS real. Or, at least, it’s a replica of a real fish caught by Hemingway’s owner Bob Belansen on August 6, 2007. His boat was called Beast, which feels appropriate considering he landed one. Elsewhere on the walls is artwork depicting the story of The Old Man and the Sea. The food: Chicken wings. Chicken quesadillas. And a Caesar salad with — you guessed it — chicken. Hey, we were in a... fowl mood. (We’ll be here all day, folks.) The eavesdropping: Men at the bar were actually lamenting the fact that “you can’t say anything to women anymore.” Cue the popping off of Diane’s head. Then they lamented the Yankees being the type of team who’d “buy their way into the World Series.” Cue the popping off of Yankee fan Jack’s head. Then they started moaning about millenials. Cue the popping off of everyone’s head! That’ll teach us to listen in. The music: “Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts. The hot tip: Hemingway’s is known for its steaks, so we’ll be back for dinner to try the grilled hanger option. That $5 bar menu (Monday-Saturday from 4-6pm and Sunday from 11:30am-9pm) also caught our eye.

Undertow
I
Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence
t was quite the week here at Undertow Central (offices in W. Cape May and beautiful, downtown Erma, NJ) with multiple gigs, increasing shoulder pain and high school plays. We even had the Halloween where, for the 14th consecutive year, the O’Brien household had zero trickor-treaters, which is just how the O’Brien household likes it. Alas, all our kids have aged out of the trick-or-treating, meaning no candy for your favorite columnist to gnosh on. On the bright side, there will be no post-Halloween 10-lb. weight gain for your favorite columnist. This makes your favorite columnist happy, but also a little sad. Guess I’ll have to gain that 10-lbs. the old fashioned way; poor dietary choices and copious amounts of alcohol. Also known as Every Other Day of My Life. I come to you again this week from Jack Wright’s chair in the Exit Zero publishing office (it’s like a regular chair only it reeks mildly of sheep musk and Aqua Velva) and facing a bank of monitors akin to the bridge of the USS Enterprise (sorry, I’m still binge-
ing on classic Star Trek... Kahn!!!). This is my second and final week editing columns at Exit Zero and, aside from pulling the editorial equivalent of putting regular gas in a diesel truck (which I’ve also done) by leaving a block of errant text in the Peter Shields ad last week, I think it’s gone pretty well. I think Jack’s email (“Goddammit, Terry...”) sums it up pretty well. The greatest joy I’ve gotten out of editing other people’s material so far is correcting Tom Sims’ movie column. The Rise of STARwalker? Really, Tom? What the hell kind of
nerd are you, anyway? You’re out of the club! Anyway, onward and upward... I had a whole slew of gigs this week at Exit Zero Filling Station (that’s a word I don’t use enough; slew. But I digress...). On Monday Tim Joyce and I played the annual fundraiser for the West Cape May Christmas parade, which was fun until my Batman mask gave me a migraine and I had to switch to my Star Trek uniform which fits like a tattoo. But the 141 of you that attended should pat yourselves on the back; you helped raise $2645 for the cause! For that kind of money I hope we see a flock of actual flying reindeer lead the way this year. Jang-a-lang! Speaking of Tim Joyce, he invited me to join him at Box It, the new sparring gym in Rio Grande, for a session in the ring. I’m not sure if he wants to help me along in my fitness journey or if he just wants to finally beat the shit out of me after 26 years. Either way, I get it. Curtis Bashaw, Will Riccio and Norris Clark (aka the Cape May Illuminati) stopped in to Exit Zero Filling Station for a beverage

and a bite on Saturday night as Tim and I played. Curtis gave me a hug, which I took as a sign that he has finally forgiven me for mauling him at last year’s Congress Hall tree lighting after a few Christmas spirits. It will now probably take just as long for him to forgive me for referring to him as an Illuminati. Norris was his usual effervescant self, basking in the glow of yet another successful Cape May TedX conference. And Will, as ever, remained deep in my heart as a fellow Squeeze enthusiast. I told Will I’d like to put together a Squeeze tribute band, which he wholeheartedly endorsed. This begs the question; which will be harder: Putting together a band talented enough to pull off those songs or finding a bar that will book a Squeeze tribute band? Only the Illuminati know for sure. We also had quite the Wildwood contingent this weekend, with former Morey’s Piers co-worker’s George Rohman, Kerry Flood, Kaitlyn Smith and Jeanette Dougherty at one table and Zach and Jordan Morey at another. Jordan, an aspiring pro baseball player until a shoulder injury derailed him, confirmed that I’m not being a big baby about my shoulder and that it sounds like a rotator cuff or labrum tear. So... thanks? Zach and Jordan were in the previous week with parents Jack and Karen to celebrate Jack’s 13th 59th birthday. I served as their, uh, server, and can report that not only did they tip, they tipped adequately. (Man, it’s so much easier to make fun of people when they don’t sign your paychecks anymore.) But seriously, all of the people in the above two paragraphs were big parts of my life from 2009-2014, my Morey’s Era, and I am very happy to still call them my friends. (I know, I know, Sappy. But true. Except for Kerry, who was 11 at the time.) A big KUDOS to the LCMR High School cast and crew of Clue, which ran last weekend. These kids start working on fall
November 7, 2019 play literally the first week of school, staying after just about every day, juggling their homework, sports and dance schedules, and manage to put on a great show year after year. Based on the 1985 film starring a host of wonderful 80s comedic actors (Tim Curry, Martin Mull, Madeline Kahn, among many others), Clue is a slamming-door murder mystery that requires split-second timing and honed comedic instincts not usually found in your average 15-18-year-old, but these kids nailed it. My favorite was Jackson O’Brien, who brought a depth and pathos to the role of Mr. Boddy the likes of which I haven’t seen since Laurence Olivier’s Richard III, but I may be a little biased. Things That Make Me Irrationally Angry of the Week: It’s a good thing Halloween is over because that PA Lottery “Monster Cash” commercial made me want to throttle a real life groundhog, though the horribly dubbed “what a great gift” in their “Christmas Cash” commercial will soon have me wanting to murder gingerbread people of all 57 genders. And every preview of New Amsterdam, the hospital show on NBC that makes Patch Adams look like an exercise in dramatic subtlety. “Ooh, look at me, I’m the smarmy doctor who breaks all the rules, aren’t I just so gosh darned incorrigable?” I prescribe 1 punch in the face. As a right-of-center person (which, by 2019 measure, makes me Atilla the Hun), I don’t generally go for Woke entertainment, but HBO’s take on Watchmen is pretty great. I don’t mind super far left entertainment, provided it’s well made super far left entertainment. JFK is a left wing fever dream, and among my very favorite movies. Don’t forget Terry O’Brien & Friends every Tuesday (Bill Caterini), Friday and Saturday (Tim Joyce) at EZFS, 5-9! So-so Music for Okay People. Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow and Jeffrey Epstein did not kill himself.

The Old Fogey
W
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
e are to be the first American city to ban all plastics! And you don’t have to actually trouble yourselves to DO anything to take part! In fact, if you sit back and do nothing at all we will be plastic-free within a month! The original plan was a phased banning, starting with those items whales love to eat, and working back. But you know Cape May – our motto is, for good reason, “Stupidinus Assininus” which translates to “Never leave well enough alone”. Thusly, we had our top scientists (descendants of the ones we whisked away from under the Russkies’ noses in ’45 to help us design the atom bomb who have not technically been informed the war is over and so toil away ceaselessly in the basement) look into a plastic-eating bacteria. The idea was – or at least I had thought it was, as I admit my German is not polished, and consists mostly of me speaking English with a German accent taken from that documentary masterpiece, Where Eagles Dare – that the bacteria
would be a lazy, slow-acting type, that would patiently consume plastic in landfills, at a rate of about a cubic inch a year. Well, did these egg-heads not confuse the imperial system with the decimal one they still insist on using, and produce a strain so ferociously hungry it makes a school of piranha look like one of those fasting buffoons I seem to be reading about all the time, these days. This might have still been salvageable had the cleaning lady, Mrs O’Brien, not decided to polish the inside of the glass
bell jar she assumed was smudged, which was brimming over with bacteria. They consumed Mrs O’Brien Swiffer, vacuum and false teeth, followed by most of the laboratory, and, regrettably, the prototype time machine I had been planning to test by going back to 2016 and sorting out some buffoonery. The lady fled the basement in a state of panic and partial undress – thank the gods she favors hessian undergarments, for reasons unclear but I think to do with Catholic guilt. Less fortunately, the bacteria found our dear city to be a veritable feast and swiftly spread all over Cape May. Ergo, you should avoid vehicles, furniture or electrical devices that contain plastic. Now would also be a fine time to curate your closets, throwing out any nylon, Spandex, Lycra or polyester, and opting for natural wools, tweeds and silk, plus a touch of leather here and there. Which, come to think of it, is pretty much my entire wardrobe anyways, other than the regrettable loss of my rubber pants, that I wear only for the annual Philly Block Party.

T
his Thanksgiving, take a moment to reflect on the Native Americans who lived in Cape May County for thousands of years before the first Europeans arrived. They were members of the Kechemeche tribe of Lenni Lenape, and first encountered Europeans around 1600. The Kechemeche were largely a seasonal population, who came to the sea in the warm months to hunt and garden. They set up fishing weirs, gathered oysters, clams and crabs. Like modern visitors, they collected Cape May diamonds and paddled canoes around the peninsula. In the autumn, they would return to more permanent settlements in the central and northern parts of the state. By 1735, due to diseases like smallpox, the Kechemeche were “no longer a viable population,” and survivors joined other tribes or assimilated into the colonial population, often taking “leave behind” names to disguise their ancestry. Most who remained in the area in the 19th century were forcibly relocated to Oklahoma. According to a New Jersey state proclamation celebrating

the Kechemeche, there were nine separate communities in the Cape May area in 1634, part of the “Unalachtigo,” or “people who live near the ocean,” organized into language groups rather than family groups or tribes. They had a reputation for diplomacy, and may have mediated disputes between tribes. Today, as few as 200 people consider themselves members of the Kechemeche, the “stewards of the waters,” with about 3,000 in the larger nation. You’d think most Native Americans would reject the Thanksgiving holiday, but many continue the long cultural tradition of celebrating “family, community, and the

riches of the land,” the ideal of “giving without expecting.” Some First Nations people in Canada invite the community to gather to strengthen relationships and prepare for the winter. According to Smithsonian magazine, Native Americans may choose to spend the day in reflection. The United American Indians of New England meet at Plymouth Rock for a “solemn and spiritual day of mourning.” Some Native Americans will mark the day with traditional foods, like nuts, berries, wild rice, and fish. Some will serve “pawpaws,” a once-common indigenous fruit that has become rare in New Jersey. Learn more about the Cape May residents who watched Captain Mey sail by at MAC’s Lunch and Learn (with Pizza!). On November 23, the topic is Native Americans of the Jersey Shore. Tickets are $20. This is a limited event. Lunch and Learn sessions are held at the Cape May Lutheran Church, 509 Pittsburgh Avenue. Programs begin at noon; doors open at 11:30. Reservations are required. The Movie Column
Arts columnist Tom Sims reviews the holiday movie season
W
elcome to November. Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and you know what that means! Okay, yes it may mean your family will be around more than you’d prefer. I’ll let you deal with that using your therapist or favorite Cape May bartender. No, the real thrill is all the great movies you can see! It’s holiday time, and maybe you’ve got some spare vacation days (you know, use ’em or lose ’em). Or maybe after so many days with the family (hours?) you’re ready to get out and catch a flick! Or maybe you like to see what’s on the horizon for the upcoming Oscar season. Wait, wait, didn’t we just celebrate Oscar? Or am I still adjusting to Daylight Savings Time? Regardless, whatever your reason, here comes the holiday movie season! Here is a quick preview of some 2019 flicks. Guillermo Del Toro is back! He won Best Director and Best Picture for The Shape of Water (2018). His new film, Antlers, seems to have none of the retro-horror classic feel of
his Oscar-winning film. But it does look as suspenseful as any film in that category. Let’s see if his follow up works with what appears to be a cool creature like the amphibian man! Can’t get enough Star Wars? Then you’re in luck. Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker seems ready to deliver on the folklore of the George Lucas universe. New and familiar characters, legendary voices, laser swords—this one appears to have it all. Some have seen the trailer and asked if there is anything left to show in the film. We can’t help but feel that

there is, of course. Doctor Sleep brings us the next chapter in the Stephen King epic 1980 psychological thriller, The Shining. Yes... that Shining. In this sequel, it’s years later and the hotel has been shut down and has grown dilapidated, with its grounds grown over. Danny, the little boy in the 1980 film, is grown up and played by Ewan McGregor. He needs to travel back to the location he remembers from childhood and face some demons. Good luck with that. I have a special place in my film lovin’ heart for The Shining (though it is famously hated by Mr King). Remember that I was the first to say the story should be a musical? Yes, that’s a cheap plug for my short film Someplace Warm (2010), which featured local celebrities Gordon Vincent, Alicia Grasso, Johnny Alvarez, and Michael Q. Murphy. Write me at the email below and I’ll send you a link. There are so many other film gems we all look forward to seeing. What film are you eagerly awaiting? T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I know Thanksgiving is three weeks away but already I’m getting nervous. I stupidly told my in-laws I would host Thanksgiving dinner. The hardest meal in the world to make. What was I thinking? We’ve only been married a year and they have been so kind I wanted to do something nice for them. Now I fear I will ruin their holiday. Please help Answer Lady. Should I just give up and make reservations? – Stressed Cook Dear Stressed Breathe and be brave. The first thing you need to do is order a fresh turkey from either Gaiss’ Market or Westside Market. A fresh turkey is more expensive, but we think it tastes better and it takes the stress of defrosting out of the equation. Also, ask the butcher how to prepare it. Tell him you are a novice and need
Wise answers to perplexing questions
help. They are extremely helpful. Secondly, stop at LeGates Farmers Market, which will still be open. Buy your potatoes and vegetables there. Don’t forget the cabbage for cole slaw and the cranberries, both of which can be made ahead. You can also order home-baked pies at Westside and Gaiss’. See? You’re all set. Eat, enjoy and breathe. Oh, and make sure you have plenty of alcohol on hand. Dear Answer Lady My family is furious with me for booking a Disney vacation Thanksgiving weekend. Of
course, it’s not just for me, but for my wife and kids. They’re pulling out all the guilt stops; “This could be your mother’s last holiday. You know she’s been ill.” (She has a cold.) This is the very reason I booked the vacation; my mother tells me how accomplished my brother and his kids are while criticizing mine. My wife comes home in tears and it’s a nightmare getting things back on track. Still, I would like to do something as a gesture of thoughtfulness. I love my mother but she’s clearly better monoy-mono than in a group dynamic. What can I do? – Prodigal Son Dear Prodigal It takes quite a lot nerve to stand up to a parent, more so as an adult than as a child. Don’t expect your mother to use this as a learning moment, but we suspect she will secretly have a new-found respect for you. As to the gesture, Cape Winds Florist has beautiful fall table arrangements. And have the Original Fudge Kitchen ship them some pumpkin fudge and chocolate-covered pretzels. There will still be comments about your defection, but your presence will be felt.

Bird Droppings
U
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
nless you have been in a coma for the last week or so, you have certainly noted that Cape Mays bushes and lawns have been vibrating with birds. Yes, migration is still ongoing and early November is the peak migratory period for a common boreal forest breeder, the Yellow-rumped Warbler. These effervescent grayish sprites are active feeders that pluck prey from branches, sally out to snap insects out of the air, forage on the ground for cold numbed insects and even pluck and consume bayberry. This versatility even gives Yellow-rumps, formerly called Myrtle Warblers, the latitude to winter in Cape May while most members of the family, the Parulidae, have retreated to the West Indies or Central America.. Easily identified by their bright yellow rumps and flat, emphatic “chip” call, one of the best places to see yellow-rumps is along the dune crossovers at the South Cape May Meadow, but frankly you passed hundredweights of birds to reach this junction. Despite dire observations concerning
North America’s declining bird numbers, Yellow-rumps remain common to abundant. This is something to savor and celebrate, so why not do so? There are few guarantees in life but if you attend a Monday morning bird walk in South Cape May, I can close to promise that a Yellow-rumped Warbler is in your future. If you are not an early riser, the cedars flanking the Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point State Park, fairly swarm with the birds.
Another late season migrant is Eastern Bluebird whose charming form and churring call is part of the American Robin onslaught. Following the passage of a cold front and following a night of northwest winds, thousands of robins are winging south. There have been times when millions of robins have been counted in a single morning and once in 1976, the massed birds sitting on Sunset Boulevard, came close to stopping traffic. Robins, too, winter here, in great numbers, roosting in the white cedar stands and fox tail, they fan out during the day to feast upon holly berries and poison ivy. But if there is a mid-winter thaw, robins can be counted upon to revert to their classic earthworm catching ways. Pop Quiz. Do robins walk or hop across yards? If you said “walk,” you’re right. If you said “hop,” you’re right, too. It depends upon the height of the grass. So hop (or walk) on over to the Hawk Watch platform and get an eyeful of what the season has to offer.

Come see this luxury oasis at 3 Robin Lane, located in the heart of Cape Island
One of the most beautiful areas of Cape Island is known as Cold Spring, South of the Canal. It provides a quiet, rural respite from the busy, more populated areas of our island. Cold Spring shares its borders with Cape May, West Cape May and Cape May Point. On a quiet cul de sac in Cold Spring, at the heart of the island, is where you will find this beautifully constructed luxury home. You are just a short bike ride away from the beaches, historic district, local farms, winery, lighthouse, nature trails and wildlife preserves. With 5 bedrooms and 4.5 baths, you will have plenty of room for everyone. The living room and great room each have a gas fireplace and cathedral ceilings. The well-appointed kitchen has granite counters, breakfast bar and stainless steel appliances. Dine in the formal dining room or the casual dining area. The first floor master suite is spacious and has a luxury bath with heated floor, plus an oversized walk-in closet. Crown molding, hardwood floors, finished basement, front porch, rear deck, 2-car garage, perennial gardens, lush landscaping and many more desirable features make this a must see!
