A Tribute To Legend George Hungarian-born pianist George Mesterhazy was an internationally known, Grammynominated musician whose death in 2012 shook the community. George was a local legend and the maestro of The Merion Inn. Last Sunday under the direction of Barry Miles, the 8th Annual George Mesterhazy tribute concert, an anticipated part of Cape May Music Festival, was held in honor of the man’s legacy at Cape May Convention Hall. Afterward, donors enjoyed a reception at the Merion Inn. RIP, George, and thanks for all the music and memories. Pictured are Zack Mullock, Sue Smith, Tom Carroll and Michael Zuckerman

SOME INTERESTING CAPE MAY TRIVIA AND FUN FACTS

Weird Sea Creature

Did You Know?

What We’re Reading

Related to starfish and sea urchins, feather stars are marine invertebrates with five arms that have feather-like fringes and tiny legs they use to hold onto corals and move around. The animals are, experts say, the closest thing we have to walking plants. They feed on plankton that they trap with a sticky mucus, and they have an anus located directly next to the mouth. They reproduce every 10-16 months.

Cape May sunsets might be among the best in the world — no, really! They’re so beautiful partly because the air is so clean here. (Pollution in the atmosphere can mute vibrant colors — not a problem here.) But don’t take our word for it. Check out the free flag-lowering ceremonies that happen at the appropriately named Sunset Beach every summer evening. This is a moving event, honoring a different veteran each day. It happens against the backdrop of the Atlantus, Cape May’s World War One-era concrete ship.

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty Written by the author of the HBO hit Big Little Lies, this novel follows nine strangers to a spa retreat in the middle of nowhere — and things get complicated quickly. It’s a witty page-turner.

very week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general vibe. The place: We went a little out of town this week, to Beach Creek Oyster Bar & Grill, just over the Wildwood bridge. The vibe: Inside, it’s dark and moody, perfect for a romantic night out. Outside, it’s a different world — we snagged one of the in-demand hightops overlooking the harbor. The flag: As well as overlooking the harbor, we also got to overlook a boat with a Trump flag. It’s funny how people never used to fly Reagan, Clinton, Bush or Obama flags on their boats. Our thought is that this isn’t progress. But it most definitely didn’t spoil our dinner — or the view. The run-in: Beach Creek owner Chris DiAntonio wandered by once or twice and stopped for a nice chat. Four years ago, fopr just one season, Chris took over Cabanas and Martini Beach (changing the name to Room 429). He brought in four bartenders from New Orleans and the result was a very fun and somewhat tumultous time at the popular beachfront destination. Chris said he’s “done with Cape May” for now. The food: We feasted on a bunch of appetizers, as is our usual desire. There were perfectly seared scallops, asparagus tempura, delectable oysters, a nicely cooked pork in brown ale, and creme brulee, washed down with Manhattans for Jack and a Blueberry Cosmo for Diane. The seats: You couldn’t get any closer to the water without getting your feet wet. Definitely worth waiting for — and the bar is a cool spot to enjoy that wait. The cocktail list at Beach Creek is a refined one. The conversation: We talked about the aforementioned Trump flag then discussed (with the aforementioned Chris D) hunting, West Virginia, guns, overstaffing restaurant kitchens and flaky New Orleans bartenders. The final word: If you ever want to split town for the night (perish the thought!), Beach Creek is a fun little groove, man.

Cape May’s original farm-to-table

Bartender Of The Week This week, Christen Oliver from Harry’s is up. How long have you been bartending? Three years. Favorite drink to make? Margaritas — because I make mine fresh with lime and if I had agave, I’d put that in there, too. More places in Cape May need to carry agave! What’s your bartending pet peeve? The wave and the whistle to get my attention. Dream job? An art curator.

The Signature Dish Place: 5 West Pub Chef: Paul Negro Signature dish: Crab cake tacos. “Hands-down the top seller,” said owner Paul Negro. “I’ve never seen a crab cake taco anywhere else... only fish.” But it’s not just novelty that makes the dish — it’s taste. It comes with housemade coleslaw, tomato relish, pepper mayo, sliced avocado and fresh cilantro on flour tortillas.

Wine Of The Week Joe Canal’s Discount Liquor Store Freemark Abbey Cabernet 10% off original price all month Opaque, dark ruby color introduces this wine that expresses dark fruit aroma and flavors. With spicy sweet oak complexity, the wine exudes blackberry, black currant, blueberry and dark cherry. There are nuances of dark chocolate, cinnamon, clove and graham crackers as well.

Terry O’Brien’s legendary column... social satire, shameless plugs — and general self-indulgence

his Saturday is notable for a couple of reasons. First, my Beatles tribute, Love Me Dudes, is pleased to be the entertainment at this year’s Father’s Day picnic in Cape May Point, 4-6, on the lawn at Pavilion Circle. I am officially not inviting you to attend. I am just making you aware. But if you do attend, I did not invite you. Got it? Good. Second, my acoustic duo O’Brien & Joyce will be the first musical act to perform at Exit Zero Filling Station, 7-10. People keep asking, and we’ve been talking about it for a while, so we figured why not give it a shot? We’re happy to be the canary in the coal mine. Also, I can’t wait to see Tim (Joyce) try The Kraken, our six-pepper curry. His agony will be hilarious to me. Sunday brings the final rehearsal for the Terry O’Brien Band before our June 23 debut at Carney’s, where we’ll reside every Sunday night this summer. This is another experimental-ish project, playing one set each of Beatles, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Prince, but we think it’s going to be pretty cool. You all know I love the Beat-

les and Billy, but I absolutely cannot wait to sing songs like “Spirit in the Night”, “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Alphabet Street” for you. We’ll talk more about the band in the coming weeks, but they’ve taken on a Herculean task for which I am very grateful. On Tuesday, June 25, I begin my second season as karaoke host at Carney’s. (I’ve burrowed into the place like a tick.) This will be the 125th season (give or take) of their famous karaoke contest, and what do contests need? Judges! If you’d like to sit on our esteemed panel with the likes of Kath-

leen Scullion, Cousin Ray Heslip and Chris Bezaire, drop me a Facebook. You judge people all the time, anyway. May as well get a few free drinks out of it. Edward Kohl kissed me on the lips three times last Sunday at my Rusty Nail gig. This brought a few thoughts to the surface. First, it verified my heterosexuality since being kissed on the lips by Edward Kohl, if I were gay, would have elicited in me more than a feeling of mild annoyance because he’s a sexy beast. Second, I retroactively apologize to anyone I’ve ever kissed while sporting beard stubble because that really hurt. Edward is rooming (platonically) with local mover-and-shaker Shane Meier and somewhere in there is the premise to a great sitcom I wish I was smart enough to write. Power couple Jon Sachar and Maddie Hogan stopped by the Nail for a family dinner with many other… what’s plural for Sachar? Sachii? Anyway, Maddie is playing a million gigs this summer and Jon… drives a truck. And come to think of it I gave Maddie a $20 last week to get me a drink and

she never gave me any change! Women be devious. Was chatting with Rusty Nail Hotties Jamie Bottoms (bartender, Anglesea Pub) and Kelsey Wise (I don’t know where she works) when my son Jackson’s name came up (it was recital weekend). Jamie, completely unsolicited, said, “That was your son? I went to see my niece and I’m like ‘who is this kid that’s making me cry’?” I cry too, Jamie. Usually when I have to pay for his classes. Due to a miscommunication with my landscaper, my lawn hasn’t been cut in about a month. This is fine, except for the Vietnamese family that has started farming in the sand puddle where my pool used to be. Is this a better column this week? This feels like a better column this week. Story Line Wrap-Up of the Week, Part One: As I dropped a bundle of EZs at Bank of America in North Cape May, Lance Vogel waved me in and, in perfect deadpan, said, “I think me and you need to sit down with my cousin Frank and talk about…” Courtside seats? Luxury boxes? Locker room meet and greet? “... signing you as a free agent.” (Cousin Frank is head coach of the Lakers.) Way to get my hopes up then instantly crush them, Lance! And thanks for thinking of me, but I’m taking my talents to South Beach. Story Line Wrap-Up of the Week, Part Two: I’ll let Karen Mirable of Cape Bookkeeping tell you. “The year was 2006, my husband and I were trying to sell our home. We were not using a realtor so we had the pleasure of meeting interested buyers. One young couple stood out, they had some energetic young boys who made a beeline for my vegetable garden, my sanctuary. I froze in horror as I watched them run amok, picking cherry tomatoes and trying to shove them up each others’ noses as they romped just out of reach of their embarrassed parents. The rest of the tour was rather awkward as mom and dad tried to restrain

June 13, 2019 the beasts, I mean sweet children. I’m happy to see those rambunctious young boys are now, well mannered, talented O’Brien men.” I wish I could say this was the only garden my kids destroyed, but thank you for the kind words and recollection, Karen, my favorite number-crunching unicorn. This story also sounds suspiciously like the beginning of a fairy tale… “Three young lads meddled in my vegetable garden…” Received a very complimentary text from Jay Bethel (founder of the excellent Bluebone) out of the blue (heh) late last Friday, along the lines of, “I been drinking, so don’t get used to it, but here’s a few nice things...” Jay is one of those book/cover guys; burly bluesman on the outside, introspective deep thinker on the inside. Also guts. I worked for Jay as a carpenter (no, really) in the 90s and he still doesn’t know I stole his copy of Hourglass by James Taylor, which hasn’t left my rotation since, so don’t tell him. If you are not subscribed to Red Letter Media on YouTube you are truly missing out. Their six-hour takedown of Phantom Menace is a work of art. On my delivery route I wandered into the restroom at Cape May Veterinary Hospital and noticed the toilet seat was very stiff, like I was the only one that ever lifted it, meaning you’re welcome, ladies. (This started out as a vet/bathroom/bitches joke but I chickened out.) I did a late-night delivery run a few weeks back and, while the traffic is much more hospitable between midnight and 4am, the police presence can be oppressive. I appreciate the men in blue, who have a hard enough job without me giving them guff, but it is a little unnerving to be followed through five boroughs by multiple cars while stopping every five feet to drop off suspicious-looking bundles. Good thing I wasn’t out for my regular weed run… ’Til next week, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

abhor tattoos, unless they have a story that does not bore me. The thought came to mind when I was visiting a local establishment that I will not name, and was made to wait (something else I despise). While doing so, the receptionist, rather than enquire after my excellent health or my exciting plans for the day, chose to witter aimlessly to a friend on the telephonic device. “So, I’m getting a new tattoo,” she gibbered. “On my ribs. It will say ‘de ja vu’… in French…” I was sorely tempted to suggest she instead get “moron” in English but refrained because that would have been mean, ungallant and also given away the fact that I was eavesdropping. Also, whilst I have had some staggeringly fine tattoos, I have also had some dreadful ones, and as I always say, “Let he who is without subdermal dye, cast the first sterilized needle.” My best is the perfect replica of the sailing ship Cutty Sark on my belly, which, when I flex my impressive seven-pack (a tragic accident in a duel cost me one ab: I will say no more about

it here) the ship seems to be at full canvas in a gale. My worst may be the secret map of the location of Captain Kidd’s treasure, which I had inked on my back, but in reverse, so I could see it in the mirror. The actual map had to be burned, for fear of discovery. My mistake was only that I engaged a tattoo artist who was more about the mood than accuracy. So rather than an exact map, showing local landmarks and a scale, I have a billowing expanse of lovely sand, and a simple “x” in the middle. (I added another smaller “x” myself, with a needle and

Find Your Way Back...

ink, showing the unmarked location of the execrable tattoo artist’s resting place). I do, for purely research purposes, wander Cape May’s beaches, studying interesting tattoos, and documenting the interesting ones in pen and ink. Also, I carry a portable needle and ink set, with which I edit those that I consider to be poorly executed, or in fact, stupid: if you are one of those Caucasians who bear some Chinese script on your body, and when asked, can only say “It’s my name!” or indeed a sleeve tattoo suggesting you are Japanese when you are from New Jersey (if you are of Japanese descent AND from new Jersey, you are exempt), or a Celtic anything, then you will be leaving the beach with a choice of one of three designs that are pre-prepared: a kitten playing with a ball of yarn, a quantity of saltwater taffy, or an all-over sun tan ranging from “latte” to “George Hamilton IV”. In special cases, all three will be combined: there is at least one bemused Wildwooder wandering around looking like George Hamilton eating taffy while playing with a small cat.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, local theater

ncertain what to do with your summer evenings in Cape May? Let your inner physicist figure it out. Physics plays out in the “action planning” center of our brains, as in, plan to leave the beach with time to make it to a show. Werner Heisenberg was the theoretical physicist who articulated the uncertainty principle, which, oversimplified, holds that you can’t measure an object’s speed and position at the same moment. As you measure the speed, the position changes, and vice versa. It’s also used to explain the idea that you change something simply by observing it. A physicist friend described it as the molecular version of trying to sneak up on your dog to get a funny snoring video — as you tiptoe in, you wake the dog. For the non-scientists among us, Heisenberg is Walter White’s alter ego in Breaking Bad, a television show in which a kind teacher becomes a ruthless drug lord. Like Heisenberg, White is a brilliant scientist with cancer. Critics claim that White exemplifies the uncertainty principle — he can’t be both the teacher and the killer. As he moves closer to one, he is less effective as

the other. In addition, Breaking Bad apparently changed America’s methamphetamine business by portraying it. Apparently, just as L.A. Law encouraged a spike in law school applications in the 1980s, Breaking Bad encouraged viewers to follow Walter White’s career path — not into science, but into methamphetamines. Cape May has its own version of the uncertainty principle — can you enjoy the wonders of a Cape May beach day and still enjoy the culture the town offers? It’s a challenge — you have to protect yourself from the sun so sunburn doesn’t render theater seats uncomfortable. You have to pull yourself out of the sand while the summer sun is high and

make yourself presentable. You have to leave enough time to dry your hair, lest the droplets from your speedy French braid land on your neighbor, but it’s possible. You can be both a beach lover and a culture aficionado. Cape May Stage presents Heisenberg through June 21, Wednesday through Saturday at 8 and Saturday and Sunday at 3. For tickets, visit capemaystage.org. East Lynne Theater presents Summerland Wednesdays from June 12 through July 20 at 8:30. Visit eastlynnetheater.org for details, and note that children under 12 are always free. Elaine’s Dinner Theater offers Murder at the Moulin — details at elainescapemay.com. Music lovers can catch the end of the Cape May Music Festival with the New York Chamber Ensemble, playing Thursday June 13 at the Episcopal Church of the Advent at 8, featuring Mendelssohn and Mozart. Tickets are $20, $15 for seniors and $5 for students. There’s an encore performance — including dessert — on Friday at the Carriage House Cafe. See capemaymac.org for more information.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

C

an you find peace in disharmony? Can you live in balance as you struggle through challenges? Okay, maybe you’ve guessed that I saw a cool, thought-provoking documentary to review for this week’s column. A good doc gets you to think — an exceptional one moves you to feel. The Biggest Little Farm is an exceptional documentary. Molly and John are two California dreamers, and their journey begins with a rescue. John is a video journalist, and one of his assignments was reporting on a dog hoarder. He fell in love with one of the dogs. The couple adopts the dog, names him Todd, and makes a simple promise to him, “You will always live in our house.” The problem is the dog is a barker, like all the time, and they all live in a tight apartment space in Santa Monica. While Molly and John work all day, Todd barks... incessantly. They tried every remedy in the book but to no avail. They eventually get evicted from that apartment. As they’re making their way to new places, they begin to give voice to

their dreams. Molly has always wanted to operate a sustainable earth-friendly farm. Using the words “earth-friendly” to describe “farm” may seem unnecessary, but many of the corporate mega farms that grow our food are anything but earth friendly. The couple and their dog find their ideal farm — about an hour from Los Angeles. It’s not paradise, but they work hard to make it productive and profitable. It begins to look like paradise, but troubles are constantly lurk-

ing around the corner. As they become more productive, wildlife begins to invade farm life. Can they find harmony? This film is beautifully shot, and even if the only interest you have in local grown is the farmers markets where you get your produce, you won’t want to miss this film. C’mon, Cape May... you know we love our locally grown. How about Duckie’s, the West Cape May Farmer’s Market, or my personal favorite The Bread Lady. See this movie and you will not look at these favorite farms the same way ever again. You’ll have a new found respect for their hardships, their commitment to producing the best possible product for Cape May and the region at large. For those readers who turned to this column hoping to find a review of Rocketman, the new movie about Elton John, sorry I haven’t seen it yet. Can someone out there send me your thoughts about the movie? It doesn’t have to be a “review” just your ideas. I’ll create the review from those notes. Email tomhsims@aol.com.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I got a job waiting tables for the summer and it is a good job, but I have the feeling that the restaurant manager is interested in me. He is way too old for me. I have a boyfriend and I don’t really like him, but I love my job. I don’t want to do anything to aggravate him. What can I do to avoid any ugly confrontation or to be put on a slow shift? So far, I have the best tables and the best shifts. My fear is that could all change. — Intimidated Dear Intimidated Tough one. The “Me Too” movement should keep him at a safe distance, but don’t count on it. The best thing you can do is pretend you are oblivious to his interest. Be very nice to him but very formal. Call him Mr or Sir to underscore the authority and the age difference. Have your boyfriend drop you off

Wise answers to perplexing questions

or pick you up so he sees there is a younger “rival” already on deck. If there is a manager above him, try to encourage that friendship or at least make that person aware of your enthusiasm for the job. Finally, have a Plan B. Think about where you would be working if that job comes to an abrupt end. If it does, report him. Most likely, though, he will get bored and turn his attentions to someone else. In the meantime, you need a nice milkshake from Exit Zero Filling Station. Milkshakes make everything better.

Dear Answer Lady We are women of a certain age, my best friend and I, and there is not a plethora of men available. The ones who are available either want to date much younger women or are men who are looking for “a nurse and a purse.” Lately, my friend is showing an interest in “Joe,” only because he has shown an interest in her. I feel he’s interested in the “nurse and a purse” aspect and would have asked anybody out who fit that bill. She thinks I’m jealous (NOT — he’s boring and overweight) and won’t listen to my warnings. What can I say to wake her up? — Concerned Dear Concerned There is nothing you can do except be supportive — as supportive as you can be. You don’t want to alienate her, thus making “Joe” her whole world. What you can do is gently advise her regarding her “purse” especially if she has family who could stand to inherit but do it out of concern for them not with the idea that he his trying to get his mitts on her money. Smooth things over and invite both your friend and “Joe” to lunch at the Blue Pig Tavern.

Bird Droppings

B

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

irds have an amazing capacity to acclimate, even thrive in habitats modified for us. Take Great-crested Flycatcher. This large boisterous forest bird has made itself at home in our home town of Mauricetown. In fact I’m confident that the planet’s greatest breeding density is in our town. Almost every other yard seems to host a pair. From May through August, the sound scape is dominated by the guttural harangue of this tyrant flycatcher. “Breep, breep, breep... breep.” The feisty birds arrive in late April already out of sorts and spoiling for a fight with jays, crows, hawks and any other bird hat does not recognize Great-crested’s assumed dominion over its airspace which extends to the border of the next breeding flycatcher pair. Anyone who denies the evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds need only watch this ferocious perch hunter target it’s insect prey. These perch hunting sally hunting specialists like insects in the dragonfly size class but are adept at plucking caterpillars off leaves as well.

This in part, explains the birds breeding density. Mauricetown, may well be the bug capital of North America. If it draws human blood, it is found in Mauricetown. Linda and I call the hordes of biting flies our “air defense system.” It keeps people from wanting to move here. Birds? They think the wealth of insects is just great, grist for the crops of hungry young. The other two reasons Great-crested Flycatchers find Mauricetown ideal has to do with the arboreal nature of the place. Street

after street of tree-lined avenues offering perch hunting birds lots of hunting opportunities. Mauricetown is an old established town, old enough for trees to have taken hold and two hundred year old houses to warp at the seams. Great-crested Flycatchers are cavity nesters. All the nooks and crannies on perches and sagging eves are made to order. But the pair in our yard are traditionalists, using a natural cavity in an ancient sycamore to house their four to eight young. The nests are messy affairs and typically incorporate a shed snake skin into the mix although in recent years, clear plastic is a viable substitute. To see one of these rowdy tyrants, try Belleplain State Forest. Go before September, by late August the birds are already heading for winter territory in southern Mexico and Middle America. “Beep... Beep.” Other birds to look for in Belleplain include Eastern Pewee. Ovenbird. Worm-eating Warbler and Summer Tanager. All these birds are local breeders with a Middle American connection. “Our birds are also their birds.”

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

WINSTON is a lively 9 month old puppy who arrived at the shelter as a stray. Like any young dog, he enjoys a quick romp in the yard and playing with toys that will stand up to his size. Winston would be successful in a home that will give him plenty of physical exercise as well as mental stimulation in continuing his training. Adopt today!

NORMAN was brought into the shelter as a stray and has quickly made his presence known through his happy personality. He loves running in the yard and chasing toys, although he hasn’t quite gotten the idea of returning them! Norman needs a family that will give him some “tender loving care” and continue his training. Adopt today!

MAXINE is a two year old German shepherd who lived with a family including children before coming to the shelter. It is reported that she was good with everyone in the family, but was not comfortable with outsiders. It is for this reason that Maxine came to the shelter. Maxine will be shown to potential adopters with an approved application and by appointment.

FIV positive is not a death sentence, he is healthy and happy. Please adopt this sweet boy. He’s been waiting long enough!
