Upcoming can’t-miss events around town...mark your calendars

ey, how’s it going with that New Year’s resolution to get more exercise? Not so great? Sign up for the city’s Recreation Department Coed Volleyball League. (And we did say coed, in case you’ve also been lagging behind in your 2012 romance resolutions). The league is open to the public for players 17 and older through February 15, with play commencing on Wednesday, February 29, so get cracking. For more information, contact the City of Cape May Recreation Department at 609-884-9565, or visit them online at capemayrecreation.org. This Saturday, February 11, Access to Art presents a world-class (and romantic) concert at Cape Island Baptist Church. Internationally celebrated violinist Bela Horvath will perform the music of Hungary along with American-born artist, Aurelia Mika Chang. The concert will feature the works of Dvorak, Mozart, Kreisler, Brahms and Monti, with some Hungarian dances thrown in for good measure. Guests will have an opportunity following the con-

³

cert to have dinner with the musicians at the stately Peter Shields Inn if they wish — a three-course dinner will be available for just $50, including tax and gratuity. If you just want to attend the concert, tickets are $20 for adults, and $15 for seniors and students. For more information, call Access to Art at 609-465-3963. Speaking of world-class music, there are two upcoming Jazz Vespers events worth getting… well, jazzed-up about. First up is The Rita Stafford Band on Sunday, February 19 at 3pm. Rita is an amazing jazz vocalist with an extraordinary vocal style and range, and she will perform songs from the Big Band era along with her husband, Bob Ferguson on the trumpet, as well as other jazz veterans. Then on Sunday, March 18, enjoy the musical stylings of The Antfarm Quartet (we just love that name, too). This group of jazz veterans, including Paul Jost, Tim Lekan, Bob Shomo, and Jim Ridl, has an extremely large musical songbook, from jazz standards to forgotten gems, original tunes to contemporary classics. Both Jazz Vespers shows will

³

be held at the acoustically exquisite First Presbyterian Church, located at Hughes and Decatur. There is limited free parking, and a $5 minimum donation is suggested for each event. The church is wheelchair-accessible. For more information, call 609-884-0680,or visi capemayjazzvespers.com. Finally, come out of hibernation and go green on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, as Cape May Forum partners with Slow Food South Jersey Shore to host Forum on the Green: A Farm-to-Table Dinner at Congress Hall. The event will be held on Friday, March 16, at 6pm in the Congress Hall ballroom. Cape May’s acclaimed Executive Chef Lucas Manteca, of the Virginia Hotel’s Ebbitt Room, will craft this uniquely green fivecourse dinner with fresh ingredients from Beach Plum Farm and other local sources. A free glass of wine will be offered with dinner, and there will be a cash bar. The tickets are $50, with proceeds to benefit Cape May Forum and Slow Food South Jersey Shore. For more information, please visit www. capemayforum.org, or call 609-770-2626.

Subscriber Of The Week

Each week, we will feature a lucky subscriber (and Exit Zero t-shirt winner!) in this spot. This week’s subscriber: Kim Allen of North Cape May. How long have you been coming to Cape May? I moved here in 1999. My first visit to Cape May was in the eighties when we vacationed in Wildwood. Who are you normally with? Jim, kids, friends, and my weekly Kiwanis Club trip. Favorite thing about Cape May? Beach time. Least favorite thing? Parking. I can’t be bothered with driving around looking for a spot. Favorite restaurants? Cucina Rosa, Louisa’s, Mad Batter, Tisha’s. Favorite place to stay? I Live in the area and never stayed in a B&B in Cape May. Some day I’ll scratch that off my bucket list. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I’d eliminate the parking meters. Favorite thing about Exit Zero? It very nicely pulls together pictures and happenings of the area. Least favorite thing about Exit Zero? I can’t really say. I never gave it any negative thought. What’s your T-shirt size? Large, and thank you!

Facebook Mystery Contest KNOW your way around Cape May? Check out the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Kate Chadwick. If you think you know what establishment this is, you could win a gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter at facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Talk Of The Town

Ramblings, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

Building Resentment THIS magazine last week published a photograph of the Convention Hall construction site on our Facebook page. It sparked 101 comments, although we should add that the last couple were from us, pleading for a truce to be called in the unseemly war of words that had developed. A few days ago we posted another photo, which prompted 40 comments last time we checked. People are passionate about this subject, and no wonder — it’s one of the most important projects in the city’s illustrious history. Some people are also a wee bit frustrated, and a wee bit mad. And we don’t blame them. The quality, and quantity, of information emanating from City Hall has been negligible. Which is why our Facebook page, and a wonderful page called Cape May Good Times, has been filled with questions from residents and visitors, concerning the seating arrangement, the stage setup, the availability of alcohol and, of course, whether or not there will be rollerskating permitted! The reason that people are asking these questions is that the city had not been forthcoming with details — that is, until the other week, when there was a spurt of interviews with local papers, along with tours of the facility, captured on video. Suddenly, we were hearing details about the seating, the stage (there will be a variety of f lexible options) and liquor licenses (the city is allowed 25 every year by the state, or maybe 50, depending on how the law is interpreted). It was great to get an update, even if it seemed like the city was winging it. How else to explain the fact that Mayor Ed

Mahaney, City Manager Bruce MacLeod and Mike Whipple, the new Director of Marketing, Communications and Event Sales, threw out different numbers when addressing how many elevated seats there would be? The construction of Convention Hall has been a fraught process, a complicated one for such a small town... we get that. But the city hasn’t helped itself. From the beginning, it’s been on the defensive. While apparently encouraging an “open process,” by inviting every Tom, Dick and Harry in town to vent their spleen and offer their opinion (which delayed the project and resulted in a regrettable compromise of a building), the process of constructing the facility has been about as transparent as the dark curtain that’s going to be hung over those huge windows overlooking the Atlantic during certain performances. We don’t know why this is the case. It’s surprising to us that so few politicians and city officials realize that telling the truth, and admitting to human errors, isn’t a weakness, but actually builds trust with their constituents. We’ve been trying for a few years to get the people inside City Hall to open up and offer some plain speaking, but it isn’t easy. Take the events of the past week, when we were ignored by MacLeod and Whipple every time we emailed questions that were NOT answered in the brief PR f lurry of a few days previously. Most importantly, we wanted to know who had authorized the $85,000 that’s apparently being spent to bring Peter Nero and the Philly Pops to open the building on Memorial Day Weekend. And we wanted to know how much the tickets were going to cost — by

our reckoning, each one will need to be $87.50 in order to break even. MacLeod finally called us after we forced the issue by sending an intrepid reporter to doorstep him on Monday. However, the conversation wasn’t very illuminating. He refused to tell us who had made the decision to invite the Philly Pops, and would neither confirm nor deny that $85,000 was the number. After a bizarre shell game, he said that city council had yet to ratify the decision. Which means that if three council members were to vote against the idea at the next council meeting, Peter Nero would NOT be coming to town. We doubt that’s going to happen, but we also doubt the city is going to sell 970 tickets for $87.50 each. We hope we’re wrong. We also hope that the city fathers realize that adopting a Kremlinesque attitude towards the press and the public isn’t helping anyone — least of all them.

Rest In Peace, Matt THE day that 53-year-old Matt McGrail of West Cape May took his own life, January 22, was the day Joe Paterno died. Matt’s best friend, Tom O’Hara, of Uncle Bill’s Pancake House, calls this fitting. “What Paterno was to Penn State,” Tom says, “Matt was to Cape May: a legend.” Amidst the grieving for Paterno, the Penn State community has been coping with a great deal of anger. And, as the local community mourns the loss of one of Cape May’s legends, the anger is no less palpable. “One minute you feel sad,” Tom says, “the next minute you’re angry, and that’s because Matt meant so much to so many, because he was such a great guy.” Matt, who founded Cape May Carpentry in 1980, was also a great crafts-

THE EXIT ZERO CARTOON... By Laurie Bender

THE CITY OF Cape May has unveiled a new design for convention hall... with everyone’s ideas included. man. “There’s not a block in Cape May he hasn’t touched,” Tom says. “Whatever he did, he did well. And he always finished the job, even if people ran out of money.” But more than the houses he built, the biggest testament to Matt’s success as a carpenter comes from the devotion of his crew. “I’ve worked for him for 18 years,” says Bruce Brown. “He was my first boss in the trade, and I’ve been with him ever since.” John Rekuc, who worked for Matt for 15 years, says “Religious people ask ‘What would Jesus do?,’ but we used to say, ‘What would Matty do?’” Fellow carpenter Marc Jacopec says, “He’d do anything for anyone.” Matt, who moved to Cape May at the age of 19, used his skills to benefit the community he loved. Most recently, he built a swing set for West Cape May Elementary School and volunteered to build an outdoor shower as a prize for the Mermaid Guild’s annual bachelor auction. But, always the practical joker, Matt’s biggest contributions came through his ability to make people laugh, whether that meant attaching toilet bowels to the rear bumpers of his friends’ cars, or having funny T-shirts made for all of of his buddies. “When we went to Key West,” Tom says, “Matt caught me sunbathing outside without a bathing suit. Next thing you know, I’ve got a counter full of coffee mugs at Uncle Bill’s with pictures of my ass on them.” But, according to everyone who knew

him, Matt’s greatest joys came from time spent with his wife of 17 years, Susan, and their three young boys, Max, Mason and Trey. “That great smile that only Matt had was at its brightest when he spoke of them,” says Jim MacDonald, a friend of 23 years. On the weekends, Matt loved spending time with his kids — working on the antique cars he was restoring for them, sharing Shirley Temples at the Pilot House, playing mini golf, or working on a project like building the world’s largest popsicle. “He was an honest man,” Susan says. “With him, what you saw is what you got. He never pretended to be anyone he wasn’t. He was just a good, honest man who would do anything for anybody.”

Playing The Racy Card Thongs and bras, lacy chemises and sassy corsets. Have we got your attention? Thought so. It’s nearly Valentine’s Day, when a young lady’s fancy turns to hearts and f lowers and boxes of chocolate, and a young man’s turn to… well, see that first sentence. So we popped in for a visit at Lace Silhouettes, the only place in our fair city where one can purchase such sexy

luxuries — nay, necessities. We had a chat with building manager Emily Hansen, who oversees the goings-on at Lace Silhouettes as well as its sister store, Cotton Company. We couldn’t help but wonder: since lingerie is so….uh, important to men, does Lace Silhouettes ever employ men? Emily told us that, unfortunately, it is company policy that all f loor employees be able to accompany guests into the fitting room for complimentary bra fittings, so men wouldn’t quite work out for that. According to Emily, women are intimidated enough as it is to get a fitting, which is really too bad. We did it, and it’s quick, painless, with no nudity necessary. Emily says, “The right bra is uplifting in more ways than one.” And yes, we were wearing the wrong-size bra, just like approximately 80% of the female population. So ladies, get yourself and the girls over to Lace Silhouettes and get with one of their Bra Therapists. And gentlemen, Emily tells us that most of their customers go for utilitarian comfort, and don’t splurge on sexy, dressy lingerie for themselves. So find out your lady’s size, then go buy her something she wouldn’t necessarily treat herself to that will take her breath away (and yours).

PARTING SHOT The fat lady ain’t singing, according to the newest billboard on Seashore Road.

With that red background and those big white letters, the message is hard to miss. It’s also hard to understand. So we did some investigative reporting and discovered that the fat lady refers to an Atlantic City establishment. Want to know which one? You’ll have to wait for the big reveal in March.

The History Column

Historical Editor Ben Miller looks at vintage hotel ads

T

his series of ads gives us a look at turn-of-the century Cape May. The Star Villa later became known as the Morning Star and the Evening Star; both were slated for demolition in the 1960s to make way for a parking lot and moved by Reverend Carl McIntire to East Cape May. The Evening Star was later demolished, but the Morning Star, now condos, remains on Beach Avenue. The Stockton was demolished in 1910; the Brexton is also long gone. The Stockton grounds were subdivided and is now home to many buildings, including the Macomber, Cape Island Baptist Church and the former Beach Theatre site. The Brexton property is on Ocean Street, where the Cape May library now stands. The Hotel Columbia, Dale’s Auditorium and the Hotel Lafayette were demolished during the Urban Renewal period. The Columbia site is now home to Victorian Towers and the Lafayette replaced by the Marquis de Lafayette. Dale’s Auditorium is now the site of Lyle Lane at Jackson Street, behind the 400 block of Washington Street Mall.

The Movie Column

By Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival

I

n this age of computer-generated imagery, elaborate sets and high celebrity payrolls, it is good to see films that stick to the basics of sound storytelling, superb acting, and beautiful cinematography. A new film called The Artist not only sticks to those basics, but to the fundamentals of filmmaking in its most rudimentary format. The Artist is a silent film. Yes, you heard me correctly, it is not a talkie — and it is as captivating and endearing a film as you will see in theaters today. The movie tells the story of silent film star George Valentin (played by Jean Dujardin) and a young protégé he helps to discover named Peppy Miller (played by Berenice Bejo). The time is 1927 Hollywood (then the town was called “Hollywoodland”), and the talkies were the latest rage. Valentin refuses to have any part of the new format, while Peppy uses it to become a rising star. The two cross paths many times as she is on the rise and he falling into a miserable descent.

Look for The Artist to capture plenty of Oscar statuettes this year This is a story that could only be properly told on film. Its subtlety, charm, and nuance needs to be captured in wellplanned close-ups and high concept sequences. The two stars are wonderfully expressive and deliver performances in silence that beat many of today’s talkies (even the ones up for awards).

The supporting cast in this film deserves recognition as well. We all know John Goodman, who plays the producer at Kinograph Studio. Even in silence, he plays his gruff, barking studio executive perfectly. And while you may not know his name, James Cromwell is one of the most beloved character actors of our time. He plays Valentin’s limo driver Clifton. As far as tributes go, this movie does more to capture the essence of early filmmaking than Hugo, a very good work this year from Martin Scorsese (visit capemayfilm.org for a review). So many predictions are surfacing about how The Artist will sweep the Oscars this year that you almost feel like they’re a jinx. And while I’m not the biggest fan of the Golden Globes, this film has topped the nominations including one for Best Movie in the Comedy/Musical category (and unlike My Week with Marilyn, it actually belongs in this section). Suffice it to say you will likely see this film’s title all over Oscar night — all well deserved.

What’s Your Story?

Every week, we ask: Who the heck are you and what are you doing here? Who are you? Isaiah Shapiro and Sophia Binello... the future Mr. and Mrs. Shapiro! Where are you from? We’re originally from Florida, but now we live in Brooklyn. Where are you now? Enjoying some food at The Brown Room — fish and chips and the roasted beet salad. Where are you going? Back to Brooklyn in about thirty minutes, unfortunately. What are you doing in Cape May? Celebrating our three-year anniversary... and getting engaged. Where did you propose? On the beach. Where are you staying? The Star Inn. How do you feel about lingerie, Sophia? It’s always fun to dress up and feel sexy, but I’m a pre-school teacher on a budget! How do you feel about lingerie, Isaiah? Well, that’s something I’ve never complained about. Interview by Diane Stopyra PHOTOGRAPH by gabi urda... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

Sleeping Around

Every week, we test the beds of Cape May’s hotels and inns. This week... The Dormer House. Where is it? On charming Columbia Avenue, at the corner of Franklin. In other words, walking distance to everything. What is it? The Dormer House is a center hall Colonial Revival built in 1899. It’s painted white with red accents, and featuring a good old-fashioned wood porch complete with rocking chairs. Who runs it? Husband-and-wife team Dennis and Lucille Doherty split the duties. Dennis, a retired union electrician and hands-on guy, tackles most of the maintenance work while Lucille handles the baking for the B&B, and, in our humble opinion, does a bang-up job. How many rooms? There are 12 on three floors, as well as an attached, one-bed cottage. There is plenty of parking. What’s the vibe? This is a classic Cape May Victorian B&B – comfy, warm and welcoming, from the entry fireplace to the eclectically decorated rooms to the white-washed wooden floors of the sunny enclosed porch dining area. The parlor is a little jewel box of a room, with inviting places to sit and even cooler things to

look at, from a player piano to a WAY cool antique typewriter. Pull up a chair for a game of chess, or select a book and relax with a cup of tea. Amenities? Old fashioned charm co-exists with modern conveniences, like flat-screen TVs, in-room refrigerator and free wireless internet. And your sumptuous breakfast is included, plus afternoon tea. What’s the bed like? Ours was an absurdly comfy queen, complete with both down comforter AND patchwork quilt. The charming head- and foot-board were a nickel-finish modified fleur de lys pattern.

What’s for breakfast? We had homemade pumpkin bread, courtesy of the talented Lucille, followed by fluffy buttermilk pancakes and link sausage, along with some excellent coffee that we couldn’t seem to stop drinking. Other refreshments? We were smitten with The Dormer House when we walked in to find a GIANT bowl of Hershey Kisses. We also spied a cut glass decanter of sherry on the sideboard… but it was too early in the day, even for us. There is afternoon tea every day at 3pm — tea, coffee, cold drinks, and homemade cookies, cheese and crackers. Insider tip: Check out the videos on their website. Dennis and Lucille might have a future in film if this whole B&B thing doesn’t pan out. Random fact: The Dormer House kitchen was renovated by the late, lamented Andy Boyt. Contact info: The Dormer House is located at 800 Columbia Avenue. Call 609-884-7446, or 800-884-5052, or visit www.dormerhouse.com.

The Cape May Crossword

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Diane Stopyra So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to our theme issue, which is lingerie. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, exitzero.us. Across 1. These short-waisted jackets of yesteryear were worn to keep a woman’s shoulders warm and protect her modesty when receiving visitors while sitting in bed. 4. A type of corset, usually strapless, that often comes down to a point in the front. 6. The first of these was made by tying two handkerchiefs together with ribbon. 7. This brand of shapewear is known for its use by celebrities under their red carpet frocks. It’s also a punishment, of sorts. 8. This sexy Japanese belted robe is usually made of shiny, colorful satin. 9. This short style of nightgown is often made of sheer cloth, like chiffon, and bedecked with ribbons and lace. The name is said to be taken from the title of a 1956 film starring Carroll Baker. 11. This woman, named by Forbes magazine as Hollywood’s highest-paid actress of 2011, kept a throwing knife in her garter belt in the film Mr. and Mrs. Smith. 13. The undergarments traditionally collected by a bride for her wedding and honeymoon. 15. In the 1830s, this piece of lingerie was considered a medical necessity for “fragile” females, even for girls as young as three. 16. This three-time Academy Awardwinning screenwriter/director/actor/

Only first-rate underwear for her — 4 Down.

comedian/ playwright said he doesn’t believe in an afterlife, but he plans on bringing a change of underwear, just in case. 18. Halfway through an interview, this supermodel accidentally broke the $8 million dollar “fantasy” bra she wore on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. 19. The title of a Seinfeld episode, this expression is also used to describe the phenomenom of the roll of flesh that falls over the top of pants or shapewear. 22. A 2000 song by Sisquo sang the praises of this particular undergarment. 23. This full-body stocking was first made popular in the 1960s by actress Diana Rigg in The Avengers television series. Down 2. An episode of the sitcom Friends has been credited with introducing this term into popular vernacular. 3. You’ll still look like a girl in this underwear. 4. Last month, The Daily Telegraph reported that this woman spent $50,000 at Agent

Provocateur, a lingerie boutique that charges $1,990 for a nightie. 5. This iconic singer rose to fame in the early 1980s, and threw down the cavorting-onstage-in-one’s underwear gauntlet currently being carried by Lady Gaga. 10. This former NBA player, who was married briefly to Carmen Electra, admitted to wearing women’s leggings under his clothes — “but not lingerie.” 12. Worn around the waist this garment has straps hanging down to hold up a pair of stockings. 14. This piece of lingerie, also called camiknickers, gained popularity during World War II. 17. The patent for this type of underwear was originally denied on the basis that candy and underpants aren’t compatible. 20. These stockings favored by roller-derby queens and superheroines are super-sexy. 21. These short shorts, syled with a slight flare, can be worn as a slip under a skirt.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I understand Anne Hathaway may be getting married here in Cape May. This breaks my heart, as it’s obvious that she and I were meant to be together, and have lots of sex and babies. (I’m not stalking her or anything, but my love for her is as deep as the shipping channel in Delaware Bay.) So, would it be wrong if, at the point of the ceremony where the minister asks to “speak now or forever hold your peace,” I loudly and publicly tell Anne what a huge mistake she’s making? - The Future Mister Hathaway Dear Mr Hathaway The Answer Lady has heard this rumor as well – how exciting it would be to have celebrity nuptials in our little town! Cape May is, after all, one of the premier wedding destinations in the country – why, even the Answer Lady was married here, prior to

Wise answers to perplexing questions

making Cape May her home. She suspects, however, that you would have to get in line with many other would-be Mr. Hathaways, so good luck with that. And the Answer Lady is not trying to be cavalier about your feelings for the lovely Ms. Hathaway, incidentally. On the contrary, it is lucky for Johnny Depp that he has yet to make an honest woman of his long-time love, or the Answer Lady would have to travel to whatever far-flung destination those nuptials would be held to stage her own intervention. Let’s face it — some of us

simply do NOT know what is best for us. Dear Answer Lady My fiancé and I are getting married this spring, and we’re having what is turning into a major disagreement. He’s been assuming all this time that I will take his name, when in actuality I have no intention of doing so. My name is pretty well established in my profession, and I happen to like it better than his. Plus, my sister got divorced a couple of years ago, and has decided to keep her ex’s name rather than go through what is apparently a major hassle to change it back. We’re at an impasse. Help! – Ms. Smith Dear Ms. Smith The Answer Lady hopes that you did not use your “it’s-a-pain-to-change-it-backafter-I-divorce-your-ass” story as an example, as hopefully you can see how unsettling your intended may find this. The decision whether to take another’s name didn’t used to be a decision at all, but was merely a foregone conclusion. Your fiancé either is surprised and maybe a little bit hurt, or he is a caveman. Talk this out and find out which.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

AM NOT one for the French, as you know, but I do tip my hat at the Gallic rogues for inventing lingerie, or at least the word for it (the actual French, back in my day, were not much for personal hygiene, and so their undergarments tended best to be admired from a good distance, usually with my dear friend Toulouse Lautrec). But the word conjures up such desire, such passion, such naughtiness that, dear reader, I can see my faithful manservant Kitchener blushing and looking faintly sick as I dictate this column to him. It takes me back to the late lamented Mrs D’Catur, and a lingerie creation that was positively opulent: yards of parachute silk, a load of the finest whalebone, hundreds of pearl buttons and a skein of the finest lace tiny children in India could be beaten to produce. When worn, it pushed everything up and out to a degree that defied physics. However, Mrs D said I looked a damned fool in it, and further said that a man’s underpants should be cotton and snug, not resembling an S&M galleon

in full rigging, and so she made me take them off. She herself favored just the merest sliver of silk and the occasional pearl necklace. But I do think a lady or chap’s taste in lingerie (ah yes, Kitchener, I shall keep on saying it just to discomfit you, or do you in fact like it? I think yes you do, you scamp… lingerie! Lingerie!) says a lot about them. For example, if one favors such attire, it must be black, or white if one is unmarried and has a sense of irony. Red is for

strumpets, and tends to be the choice of a clueless man shopping for a lady whom he fondly imagines he knows, but in fact he will soon lose her to that handsome mailman who drops by every day, and when she leaves him, he will open a drawer to find all the unopened, unworn and unwelcome red lingerie lying there taunting his taste and manhood. In general, men should not dare to purchase lingerie (Kitchener! I see you sweating there! LINGERIE!) for a lady unless he is given specific instructions. He should opt for the wiser option of showering the lady with wanted gifts and then dropping very specific hints as to his choice in her lingerie (say it with me, Kitchener, you wretch!) and then begging for several hours for her to purchase it herself. He should also be aware that outside of his surreptitiously delivered Sports Illustrated calendar, gravity DOES have a visible effect on real ladies, and critiques and helpful fitness and dietary advice are not welcome. Oh, and chaps? Boxer shorts are not sexy, especially silk ones. Go to the gym instead.

Why not aGift Card for that Special Someone? What a romantic way to celebrate the day! Enjoy a Victorian Experience in a specially designed couples room, luxuriating in a whirlpool, side by side massage, & lite fare. 607 Jefferson Street Cape May, NJ 08204

Activity Of The Week

I

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: “Schools For The Colored” Exhibit.

N 1960, America was stunned by a picture of federal marshals escorting six-year-old Ruby Bridges to school in New Orleans. Photography showed the contrast: the ugliness of segregation set against that beautiful little girl with the bow in her hair. Today, photography shows the legacy of that ugliness in “Wendel White’s Schools for the Colored: Highlighting the Life and Soul of the Franklin Street School,” on exhibit at the Carriage House Gallery of the Emlen Physick Estate. The South didn’t have the monopoly on school segregation in America. Cape May’s landmark Franklin Street School opened in 1928 as an elementary school for African American children, and segregated schools were common in New Jersey into the middle of the twentieth century. It took a lawsuit by two mothers, Berline Williams and Gladys Hegdgepeth, to change things. In 1944, the New Jersey Supreme Court held that school segregation is unlawful, and ten years later, ‘Hedgepeth-Williams v. Board of Education, Trenton, NJ’ was cited as a precedent for the United States Supreme Court’s decision in

Brown v. Board of Education. Wendel White is a Distinguished Professor of Art at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. ‘Schools for the Colored’ depicts historically segregated schools in northern states. The photos show solid buildings in dreamlike landscapes, effectively highlighting the separation of these schools, and their

students, from their communities. In places where the school no longer stands, the shape of it is superimposed over the landscape, showing how quickly history can be erased. The Franklin Street School has been designated by the State of New Jersey as an African American Historic Site. The Center for Community Arts is renovating the building, with the goal of transforming it into a fully-accessible community center. Plans include space for the John and Janet Nash African American History Archive and the Archive of the Greater Cape May Historical Society, as well as for CCA’s arts programs for children and adults, and Cape May’s recreation programs. Schools for the Colored is presented by the Center for Community Arts and the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts through April 15. Admission is free, and gallery hours vary. A free panel discussion with Wendel White and representatives of the CCA is scheduled for Sunday, February 19. Call (609) 884-5404 for information. Visit the Schools for the Colored exhibit to get a more complete picture of school segregation in America. Next week: A Winter Wine Weekend

junior Christopher Addonizio is not only currently first in his class, but he is also heavily involved in both Key Club and Mock Trial at LCMR. Parents Sandi Eakin and Jim Addonizio and stepfather Dave Eakin are supportive of both Addonizio and his older sister Erica, who is also an LCMR graduate and current student athlete at the University of Delaware. Recently elected as Lieutenant Governor of his Key Club district, Addonizio must juggle his obligation to overseeing his district’s clubs and his own school work. As well as being very active in Key Club, Addonizio is an integral member of the Mock Trial team. With such demanding extracurricular activities, staying at the top of his class can be challenging. “I try my best and keep up my work ethic,” said Addonizio of his ability to handle the rigors of a hectic schedule. Addonizio would like to pursue a degree in engineering after high school. He is currently interested in Rutgers University as well as Cambridge University in England. Surely his strong work ethic will drive him to wherever he wishes to go in the future. by RYANSARA HUNTER / photograph by Alyssa Spatacco

PANDORA is a sweet young girl. She’s very nervous, so you will have to take time to let her get used to things. Pandora does know a few commands, and she’s very food motivated... so she should be great to train! This pup is okay with cats, good with other dogs, and even good with kids. If you think she may be the right one for you, stop on in the shelter and give her a second chance! The adoption fee is only $95.

BOWSER is calm, quiet and sweet, but he does get a bit anxious. He’s going to need a bit of time to adjust to a new home, and will need a little more TLC, but he is a good boy! He doesn’t get along wonderfully with other dogs, and wouldn’t be good with cats, either. A quiet home without children would be best. If you think you could spare the love for this adorable German Shepherd mix, stop in. The adoption fee is only $95.

SONIC is a very handsome one-yearold American Eskimo/Sheltie mix who was recently surrendered to the shelter for being too rambunctious with his owner’s young child. We can’t believe he hasn’t been adopted yet! All he needs is some attention, training, and exercise. Most importantly though, he needs understanding because he doesn’t understand why he’s here; he’s jus a fun-loving pup! The adoption fee is only $95.

MADISON is a beautiful cat...how can you not fall in love with that face? She’s waiting patiently for a forever home with her equally adorable sister, Bella. They are both sweet and affectionate young gals who would make wonderful companions for anyone in need of a new friend. Will you give Madison a chance? Her adoption fee is $70.

CRY BABY is a friendly, middle-aged black male. He loves affection, and loves to give it, too! He will make a very good companion, but he is FIV+, so he does need to be the only cat in the house, or else he needs to be placed in a home with other FIV+ cats. His adoption fee is only 35$, and you can’t beat that.

PERRY came to the shelter a few months ago with his brothers and sister. Most of Perry’s siblings have gotten used to things just fine, but he is still terrified. All he needs is someone with a little bit of patience and a lot of spare love. If you’re that kind soul, give Perry or his siblings a chance; this could be your greatest decision yet.

each week, Exit Zero will be ambushing unsuspecting and deserving citizens with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a local florist. All you have to do is answer a question or two by our roving photographer, Gabi Urda. This week’s lucky recipient is Dani Barnsby of Cape May, who was ambushed at Washington Commons. Age: I am 64. Occupation: Starving artist. Plans for today: On my way to a watercolor class with Marie Natale. When is the last time you got some flowers? Friday. I was up in Linwood at Waldor Orchid Farm. They are working on the entryway for the Philadelphia Flower Show, so I wanted to check it out. I bought myself an orchid plant while I was there! photoGRAPH by gabi urda... flowers from cape winds

Never mind Spanx! The hot news from fashion week in Milan (Italy, in Europe) was that men with tiny waists are once again “chic”. And old-style corsets are the height of skinny fashion! Our original 1934 models are exquisitely crafted from leather and silk, and will reduce a chap’s waistline by up to 50 per cent. Our Men’s Corsets (Morsets) start at just $45. Note: side effects may include frequent offers of a romantic nature, increased self confidence and ruptured organs.

Bird Droppings

S

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

O THERE we were on the outside porch of this kick-vent (that’s the back end on a bird same as our back end) little bar at the end of a dirt road. No, not that end. The other end. We, meaning the twenty or so members of our Winter Raptor Workshop were scanning for eagles and stuff and drinking Yuengling beer and more or less having the good time that people have who are watching eagles and drinking beer. Why Yuengling? It’s what was on tap. Why eagles? Because today, at least, they were more common than Short-eared Owls. Anyway, every five minutes or so one of the regular patrons from the bar would get curious about what the party was all about and wander over. “What are you looking at?” “Eagles,” we’d say. “Real eagles?” they’d ask. Since an image is worth more than a reply, we’d step back and let the patron

look through a spotting scope at whichever one of several eagles happened to be in view (and focus). The most often heard response was: “WOW.” It’s very heartening when people say “WOW” about the national bird. And if they are very much in the moment, we then invite them to look at one or two

other birds. Perched Red-tailed Hawks... perched Northern Harriers... foraging Snow Geese. You know. Birds that are pretty much all over the place when you stand at the end of dirt roads in winter, in New Jersey. No. I told you. The other end The reason you’ve never seen any of this neat stuff yourself is because you are standing at the wrong end. Most people reading this article will never travel to the good end of the road. The one with the beer and the eagles. They won’t do so because they have beer in the fridge at home and don’t particularly care about seeing eagles. But just in case you are a beer drinker and an eagle aspirant who has not yet graduated up to the level of eagle watcher, then you should know that there is a whole bird watching infrastructure in place that has no higher ambition than to move you toward your ambition. An institution that more or less wrote

Bird Droppings ? From Page 75 the book when it comes to bringing people and nature together. An institution jam packed with talented, cheerful, eagle-conversant souls who have turned thousands of people on to the extraordinary natural history all around them and... You won’t even have to buy them a beer. All you have to do is show up at a regularly scheduled Cape May Bird Observatory morning walk. They begin at 7:30am (so it’s a little early for beer anyway) and they go for just about two hours. You bring your eager anticipation. CMBO and Cape May supply the birds. You get a face full of WOW. The natural world gets a new advocate. Everyone wins. Nobody loses. You go off to breakfast with something to talk about and... When you have dinner that night you’ll have something to toast to. Your first eagle! Or Snowy Egret or Gray Catbird or Hooded Merganser or Northern Gannet. Every bird counts as one. There are ten thousand species in the world. But if you want to start in Cape May where there are

Seymore Thanu recommends eagle spotting with good friends and good beer! about 4% of the planet’s species, it’ll make a good start. The beer is better here than it is in many other parts of the world, too. Want to know where and what day to meet for these 7:30am walks? Head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory, THE place for all your nature needs. CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609.884.2736), and is open 9:30am to 4:30pm every day

but Tuesday. Pick up a free schedule, birding map and checklist. We have walks scheduled throughout the season — even in February! Take a look at the sighting sheets to check what’s being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory, or just browse around. While you’re there check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars or, if it’s not a particularly cold day, sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, you can also visit us online www. BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column

T

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on Old Cape Island

HIS week, I eavesdropped on one of those predictable conversations about who has it harder: men or women. “Women have to give birth!” I heard one girl say. “But men want to have sex all the time,” retorted a man. The rest of the conversation went much the same way: “PMS!” “Testicular Cancer!” “Cramps!” “Unexpected erections!” The debate ended in a stalemate. As far as I could tell, there was no definitive conclusion as to which gender has it harder. I was trying hard not to form an opinion of my own. After all, I’ve never been a man, so I can’t very well judge how easy or difficult it is to be one. But I’ve been doing some gender-related research recently (don’t asky why; I am single... in Cape May... in February), and that not-forming-an-opinion thing is getting harder. Here is what I’ve discovered about why Mother Nature hates women: 1. When a woman has casual sex, her

brain releases a chemical called oxytocin that makes her feel instantly bonded to the man she is with — no matter how bastardly he may be. Is she in love? That doesn’t matter…she’ll feel like she is or, at least, like she could be eventually. When a man has casual sex, his brain releases oxytocin, too, but in such small amounts he’s over that pesky bonded feeling shortly thereafter. 2. When a woman gets fat, she becomes less attractive. What a man gets fat, he lasts

longer in bed. A study conducted in Turkey concluded that, because of hormones stored in belly fat that delay male climax, the guy most likely to rock your world looks like Fred Flinestone. 3. Over the years, semen has evolved to work toward the best interests of the donor — the male. The result? There are anti-depressants in a man’s semen on which a woman can get hooked. Take away the sex, and she goes through what researchers are calling “semen withdrawal.” Cue high-fives from fratboys across Cape May. 4. Women now have to listen to obnoxious jokes about said semen withdrawal. American surgeon Lazar Greenfield responded to the above research by printing in a Surgery News editorial: “So there’s a deeper bond between men and women than St. Valentine would have suspected, and now we know there’s a better gift for that day than chocolate.” Har, har. There’s more, but it’s too depressing to write. On the upside: being a single girl... in Cape May... in February... isn’t looking so bad.
