The Police Blotter
GRASS VALLEY, CA: A man from the 200 block of Race Street called the Grass Valley Police Department at 8:30pm to report seeing a man’s face in a mortuary window, and he believed a person had been buried alive. When asked by a dispatcher if it could have been an employee, the man said, “No, you should have seen his face.” – The Union
Learn Russian With Yulia
YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act as extremely xenophobic. We at Exit Zero warmly embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and to this end offer a weekly lesson to help you communicate with your Russian-speaking friends. Please note – the “Russian” we are printing is the phonetic interpretation to make for easier reading. Do Russians believe in Aliens? V rossii veriat v inoplanetian? Here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Konechno, oni chasto priletaut v moi gorod, Znamensk. Which translates to: Absolutely. They come to my town, Znamensk, all the time. – Yulia Goremykina

LONGTIME visitors and residents will recognize Regina’s Sub Shop on Lafayette Street, where Oyster Bay is today. The deli was named for Regina Scoleri, daughter of Peter Scoleri, who opened the sub shop with Edmond McCullough. Peter and Regina are shown in the picture. The shop later changed its name to The Filling Station when it was purchased by the owners of the Shore Bar, Harry and Mac, who made it a traditional restaurant and added a salad bar. – Ben Miller

Random Fact Of The Week
OF ALL the planets in the Solar System, Mars is the one people believe is most likely to contain or to have contained life. In 1938, a radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells (a story about an invasion of Earth by Martians) caused panic in the US.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J When the moment comes, take the last one. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a dinner of chicken and portobello mushrooms. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
RE WE all agreed that tourism is, by far, the biggest producer of revenue in this city? Good, I’m glad. And are we all agreed that parking meters can be a real pain in the butt? I thought so. A few days ago I parked on Carpenter’s Lane and discovered I was a quarter-less man. I got out a credit card and tried to swipe it in the meter. Didn’t work. Tried another card. Didn’t work. Tried three more cards. Didn’t work. (Which was probably just as well, given there wasn’t any credit available in those last three cards, but you get my point.) All in all I performed at least 15 attempts at swiping my card, with no success. A leetle bit frustrating, don’t you think? I was visiting the Whale’s Tale at the time and asked staff inside if they’d heard of any problems like this before. “Oh, yes!” was the emphatic answer. “Lots of times.” Then on Saturday night I parked on Perry Street, with the intention of throwing down a very quick glass of prosecco in The Brown Room (which I did), followed by the opening of the world premiere of Class at Cape May Stage, which was superb (go see it – it will make you laugh and it will make you cry!). This time I came prepared – I had a fistful of quarters. But the couple parking next to me didn’t and, guess what, they couldn’t get their credit card to work. They were heading for dinner at The Ebbitt Room and were really frustrated, which I hate to see. The Class II police officer was not, I’m afraid, much help. He shrugged his shoulders and said he couldn’t do anything about it. Oh, and I should mention that the number that was supposed to mark my parking bay had been completely rubbed off, which happens a
lot, as I’m sure many of you have noticed. The point is... the installation of the new parking meters was a very bad piece of business. A very bad piece of business indeed. First of all, a lot of folks have no idea they are supposed to feed a meter, since there is very little visual prompting, other than a number on the curb (assuming it hasn’t disappeared). Secondly, if the credit card system fails regularly (which it seems to do), then you’re just making visitors (who are the lifeblood of this city) very unhappy. I don’t know how much it cost to put those new meters in, but you and I know it was a lot of money. I asked Cape May’s Public Works Director Bob Smith what the problem was and he said that the credit card function on individual meters sometimes went awry and that when they did, motorists should call a number marked on each meter, which will then alert a member of the Public Works department to come fix the meter. Clearly, this news hadn’t been imparted to the summer cop I met the other night. Of course, this doesn’t help the motorists who park their cars expecting to use their
credit cards and who then have to wander around town trying to purloin quarters. And while we’re on the subject, I would love the new city council to consider changing the 10pm limit on meters – it’s so gratuitous and anti-social. Even in New York, you don’t have to feed a meter after 7pm. I can’t put a number on the damage that these meters inflict on Cape May but put it this way, if we removed every single meter in town I’m guessing that the one million dollars or so that they bring in would probably come back to the merchants of this town, and then some. Of course, we’d have to come up with another way of making up the deficit in the city’s coffers, but it’s a big idea worth considering. THERE are some people in town who think that too much time has been spent discussing the light piers that were installed at the harbor a few months ago. I’m not one of them because I happen to think that first impressions are very important, and that the entrance to Cape May ought to reflect the city’s qualities. It’s true, as recent council candidate Alison Bjork said, that we already have fiberglass sharks decorating the harbor, but that doesn’t mean we should extend the kitschy design ethic. I dislike the light piers, though not quite as much as I dislike the vinyl railings that decorate the promenade. Anyway, the light piers have provoked a great deal of debate. Last week the Star and Wave chimed in on the subject. Cape May’s “newspaper of record” doesn’t make a regular habit of publishing editorials and on the evidence of last week’s effort this is probably a good thing. The editorial suggested that it was wrong that the design committee

Ramblings From The Editor ? From Page 11 recently appointed by the city to come up with an idea to replace the light piers comprised two members who were not residents of the city. Why, the Star and Wave thundered from the mountaintop (okay, I’m exaggerating – it was more of a squeak from the sidelines), are non-residents being asked for their opinions on matters affecting this city? Hmmm. I guess the fact that the two nonresidents in question – Dave Clemans and Hilary Pritchard – have each owned successful businesses in town for a few decades and spearheaded, respectively, the renovations of Cape May Stage and the Washington Street Mall ought to count for something. And, honestly, are we going to be so petty as to prevent such “outsiders” (they both live on the island) from lending us their wisdom, skills and advice – all of which has been provided for free, by the way? (In fact, both of these people, along with their spouses, have each given tens, and I mean TENS, of thousands of dollars to local non-profits in the past few years – really, why would we want such selfish jerks contributing to city projects?) The Star and Wave’s editorial didn’t mention the fact that the School of Environmental
Design at Philadelphia’s Temple University is being paid nearly $50,000 in a year-long project during which students will develop and present proposals for Rotary Park, Harbor View Park, and a biking and walking trail on the island. A few thoughts on this: 1. I don’t believe the Temple students and teachers are residents of Cape May. 2. I don’t believe that there is any evidence that the city reached out to any universities in New Jersey to ask if they would like to be paid that kind of money to come up with ideas for improving Cape May’s recreational facilities. 3. I do believe that Temple is the alma mater of Mayor Ed Mahaney. 4. Neither the Star and Wave’s editor nor its publisher are residents of Cape May, and their offices are in West Cape May (as are ours). By their own rationale, should they be commenting on matters that affect the city? I guess there’s another message here – that neither Cape May’s venerable newspaper nor an upstart phenom (that’s us!) can afford to rent space in this city, but that’s a column for another day. So you get my point – I hope. This is a small town, but there’s no need for us to be small-minded. I am sure the Temple students will come up with some exciting
plans, just as I am sure that Dave Clemans and Hilary Pritchard (along with the other qualified people on the design committee) will bring a lot to the table. There was one item that did make sense in last week’s Star and Wave and that was an idea from local legend and Exit Zero aficionado Shirley Stiles, who suggested that the harbor should be decorated with a sign that says: WELCOME TO CAPE MAY – RELAX, YOU’VE MADE IT. I think you nailed it, Shirley. That’s how I feel after the three-hour drive from New York. I would put that message on a simple, rustic, weathered wooden sign, maybe even arching it over the bridge. AND finally, a last-minute reminder that you are ALL invited to the big party at the Exit Zero Store and Gallery on Sunset Boulevard (across from the Shell gas station) on Thursday, May 20 – which is either today, tomorrow or last week, depending on when you are reading this. We will be unveiling our new color glossy Exit Zero magazine, the 201011 Cool Cape May book and we have also carried out a rather stunning renovation of our store. There will be food from sushi chef Jeff Nace, Seaside Cheese, Depot Market Café, wine from Hawk Haven Vineyard and music by guitar legend Geno White from 2-5pm. See you there, you crazy kids!

First of all, tell me a little about the food and the atmosphere
A lovely little spot in the Washington Street Mall. Fine food, excellent service and great peoplewatching.
This fine restaurant offers superb food, an elegant bar, and dining with ocean views.
Superior coffee that’s always fresh and healthy food that’s fabulous for both breakfast and lunch.
Fine dining near the harbor. Elegant dining room, cozy fireplace, and the classic Clipper Ship Pub.
Downhome cooking and a really friendly, laidback vibe in this gem of a place, just a few minutes from downtown Cape May.
New owners Jim Linnington and Ed Niemann promise creative comfort foods and a lot of improvements.
This Villas favorite attracts people from all over. Why? Because the food is reliably good and very affordable.
“The local café with the wholesome aroma” is what they call it... and that’s how we describe it. Very apt!
A chic interior and stylish food, but the ambience is anything but pretentious. Modern American cuisine.
Congress Hall’s restaurant is better than ever, serving classic tavern food with a twist or two along the way.

A perennial favorite in Cape May. You could say it’s become an ice cream institution! Also a good stop for lunch and dinner staples.
With the remarkable cooking of chef Lucas Manteca, there’s even more reason than usual to visit. Sublime concoctions.
A fun night out. Stop for a cocktail at the classic bar, then sit down for dinner and a hugely entertaining night of comic theatre.
It’s all ridiculously tasty and it’s all cooked right here on the island. This is a must-stop for an afternoon (or morning!) treat.
Still one of Cape May’s finest restaurants. Open for the season, serving food that’s as brilliant and creative as ever. A classic.
It wins awards for its Italian food every year for a reason. This is authentic cuisine served in a beautiful location. A win-win!
This local favorite serves superb southwestern food. Grab a seat on the patio when the weather is nice!
Excellent downhome Italian food, reasonably priced and great for a family dinner. Try Friday Fish Night!
A Key West vibe, great views of the harbor, good food and regular entertainment. Come over for an irresistibly laidback experience.
You know that summer is around the corner when this little slice of the Caribbean re-opens. Bring it on!

A Night On The Town
Bars, restaurants, culture and events... Dan Mathers’ weekly guide to what’s going on in Cape May
A
LTHOUGH the Montreal Inn stands as a silent testament to his work, Harry Hirsch’s name now graces another building which he created and acts as a more obvious tribute to an amazing life. This past Thursday, Harry’s Ocean Bar & Grille celebrated a re-opening, a re-naming and a re-branding – it used to be Café Promenade – but more importantly it celebrated the life of its namesake. Harry was a teenager in Poland when the Germans invaded during WWII. He was separated from much of his family and forced to live in the imposed ghettoes. Under the false promise of a better life Harry and his older brother Joseph both ended up in one of the most infamous concentration camps of the Third Reich – Auschwitz. He spent four years living in conditions that turned his heart to stone. As the end of the war – and the German occupation – drew near, Harry faced a firing squad but the soldiers moved on and, by a miracle, he survived. Later he left the country and came to America.
I’m certain I can’t do Harry’s story justice. The little I know is taken from a threeminute-and-thirty-second clip, available on the CBS website, that I watched after the opening party. Despite this clip’s brevity the message stayed with me. I think if I’d have known his story beforehand it might have lent me a different perspective from which to view this opening. The little I knew of the name’s signifi-
cance at the time of the party came from a story my boss, Jack Wright, had told me about a conversation he’d had with Harry Hirsch’s son, Larry. In this story Jack tells Larry he should rename the restaurant after his father – he should call the place Harry’s. Larry had a slightly different memory of this story, and he told his version at the party. Now, I’m not going to say whose story I think is right because: A. I don’t know; and B. Any judgment either way could cost me dearly. On the one hand I could lose my job and on the other I could lose a place at Larry’s new bar which has one of – if not THE – best beer selections in town. I’m not willing to risk either option. Now, about the beer. The bar at Harry’s is run by Jonathan Hirsch, Harry’s grandson. Although Jon does not have the benefit of the alcohol education that a Penn State degree bestows upon an individual, he did claim that his years at Boston University adequately prepared him for running the bar. “This is what I learned in my time at BU,” he said.

Well, Jonathan must have gotten a good education somewhere because his brew selections were impeccable. Everyone from the casual beer drinker to the beer nerd will likely be satisfied by the draft choices. Rick Swain (of the hardware store family) stepped up to the bar and ordered a Coors Light. I chided him about his choice and pointed out all the other options. Rick just stared for a second before pointing at me and saying, “Twenty-five” then pointing at himself and saying, “Fiftyfive. When you get to be my age you don’t need to try everything. You know what you want.” For the record, Rick, I’m only 23, but thanks for the wisdom. At the other end of the beer spectrum, bartender Zach Smith reached into the fridge behind the bar and began extracting 22oz bottles ranging from a Belgian Trappist beer to the domestic Arrogant Bastard Pale Ale. At this point I’d like to take a moment to apologize to Zach for calling him Kyle. Now, remember, all of this beer is in addition to a draft selection which incorporates a deliciously wide array of flavors and features beers you won’t find anywhere else in town. If there is another bar on the island that has Hennepin on tap, then I stand corrected… but I doubt it. Jonathan takes pride in his new baby, and to showcase this he allowed me to see their keg room. I haven’t seen too many keg rooms (or other giant refrigerators full of kegs and hoses), but Jon assured me that his was state of the art. It has a safety relay that filled with beer and shut off when the keg kicks. I was initially surprised to find that Harry’s wasn’t buying on a larger scale. All but one of the kegs in the system was a quarter keg. (For reference, the kegs we usually see are half kegs.) Jon told me this was because they are going to
continually change the draft selection throughout the year and will be regularly replacing these half-sized kegs with a new selection. As if I needed another reason to come back. And, if you’re wondering, the only beer that wasn’t in a quarter keg was Guinness. Turns out they’re only available in one size. My girlfriend Tanya and I spent most of the remainder of the party hovering around the cheese trays and fruit displays. We commented on how interesting it was that the food was presented on mirrors, while Kim Moryakov helped herself to mutant-sized strawberries which, despite looking like they’d been exposed to Godzillatype radiation, tasted incredible. When the bite-sized, fruitflavored chocolate cakes were nearly depleted and the brownies were entirely consumed we bypassed the still-full vegetable platter and headed to the bar. On our way we passed Mayor Ed Mahaney, who acknowledged my cordial “Mr Mayor” greeting with a stone-faced glare. I’m guessing he saw my campaign ad... While standing at the bar we met Steve Miller, the owner of Frescos and 410 Bank Street, who was nice enough to invite us to be his guest at Frescos later that night. Though it is not the subject of this column, I would be remiss in my duties as a journalist if I did not mention that the steak I was served at Frescos was the best I have ever had. They took filet mignon, chopped it into three pieces and tenderized it into super-juicy, flat sections that were cooked mediumrare. The fried olives are also worthy of a mention But, back to the point. I am happy to say that I’ll be taking bike rides to Harry’s on a pretty regular basis from here on out. I’m ecstatic to see someone in town whole-heartedly embracing the craft beer culture that I love and appreciate.
Marie Nicole’s serves modern American cuisine with a European ambiance in a relaxed atmosphere
A lively nightspot with a friendly vibe and great oceanfront dining with a view!
No frills at this harborfront bar. This is where fishermen go to drink serious drinks and eat seriously good scallops.
The dim, amber lighting, dark wooden bar, period fittings and classy staff give this place a special ambience.

The Georgian revival mansion is magnificent and the modern American menu matches it all the way.

The local legend is back and it’s better than ever. Now in its second season, the relaunched Nail is beachfront dining at its best.
Fresh, delicious food at a great beachfront location is what you’ll find at Sean’s Restaurant!
A huge plus for the area when it opened, and this place continues to delight with gourmet treats.
Situated in the lobby of Congress Hall, this shop has great coffee and some lovely to-go breakfast goodies.
A Cape May legend, and still one of the places you most want to be on a coald winter night (or afternoon).
Reliably-excellent food – there is a reason why people often wait a while to eat here... opening March 12!
Opening April 1! Make your reservation for Easter Brunch or Easter Dinner now!
If you want to bring the family for a fine and fun Italian meal, look no further than here!
Superb gourmet food, a great little cocktail bar to get your night off on the right foot. Quality from start to finish.
Zoe’s has large portions at affordable prices. And they have a great patio if the weather is nice... bring fido!

Terry O’Brien conjures up his weekly recipe full of wit, wisdom, and words in general
T
HERE’S a Fleet’s Enemas in my pantry. Let’s see… 8:58pm Sunday night, deadline is at 10… what to write, what to write… By the time you read this we will 10 days (or less) away from the big grand opening of the super-secret new Morey’s Piers attraction, which will be great for a couple of reasons; 1. It’s going to be a super terrific and memorable piece of equipment that I hope you’ll all come and check out then come and check out again with your friends and family (over 12) because I think it’s going to be THAT good. 2. I can finally talk about it. Thrown away will be the terrible shackles of secrecy that have hounded my days and kept me sleepless at night. It was that or all the nachos. Either way, it’ll be fun to finally be able to chat about it without looking over my shoulder. I swear I keep seeing black helicopters with the familiar Morey’s Piers logo circling my house and following me home from work. About 12 hours after I finish this column we begin real live actor training on the new dealie, which again I am terribly excited
about. The last six months have all led up to the next 10 days and I’m just as curious as (some of ) you to see how it turns out. I just know I’ll be a very happy man come June 1st. (I’ve made funeral arrangements for that day, too… just in case.) Have I told you I feel like I’m shrinking? It’s not so much that I’m losing weight (thank you for not noticing), but just… shrinking. My watch flops around on my wrist, my belt won’t hold my pants up, and my wedding ring now slides easily over my knuckle, but I feel like everything is exactly the same size it was before (watch it), only… less. Like my mol-
ecules is getting smaller or something. Just thought I’d share that with you. For the record, the terry.o’brien that’s been posting on the Website That Must Not Be Named is NOT me. The one who said “there are a lot of queers in Cape May” like it’s a bad thing. Farewell Office Mate of the Week: Alas, just as I began touting the virtues of Kristel Fillmore (my Morey’s homey) I am being kicked to the curb, left to find pens, whiteout, and enough flat space to set up my laptop on my own. Kristel’s been aces. And I’m trying not to be offended by the 15 cans of Lysol and Tilex she’s been stocking up on. Speaking of people who like me now but may not in a few weeks, DJ Jimmy J is about to become ALL KINDS of busy running Terry O’ke. The Reverend James Jay and the Karaoke Choir currently perform at the Ugly Mug (now on Wednesdays!), and soon start Tuesdays at The New Bayshore (5/25) followed in short order by the Boiler Room and the Atlas

The Undertow ? From Page 35 Inn. Plus, there are developments on the Chelsea Hotel in AC, but nothing to report yet. So… yeah… there’s that. How to Win Friends & Influence People of the Week: I’m sure the owners of American Swimming Pools are fine, upstanding, God-fearing people. But I’m not sure that adorning the company truck with Dallas Cowboy stickers (including the now-passé Calvin-peeing-on-Eagleshelmet decal) is the best way to drum up new business. Speaking of which, the more often Pat Jackson Jewelers asks me to be their Facebook friend the less inclined I am to do so. Pat Jackson’s is a fine jewelry store, but coming off a little needy. You know what might sway me? A little jewelry (the wife likes silver). Next goddamn person that pulls out in front of me while talking on their cell phone is getting a ford Windstar up the @$$. It’s a five-mile drive from Morey’s to Erma. Three times last Friday this happened. And, not for nothing, ALL WOMEN. I was very much enjoying a soup called Pepper Pot (I sometimes get adventurous in my selection of Campbell’s Soups), enjoying the spicy aroma and sharp tang, when I noticed what appeared to be schools of baby jellyfish floating around in the bowl. Close inspection of the can revealed that Pepper Pot’s main ingredient is beef tripe. Yep. Tripe. Can’t say I’ve never eaten Tripe now. Much as I wish I could. Gigi Brisson (and man-pet Lonny’s) held their first annual Cape May mini-golf tournament on all three of Cape May’s fine mini-golf establishments (Stockton Mini Golf, Ocean Golf next to Carney’s, and Cape May Miniature Gold on Perry… if they sold beer at those places they’d make a mint… just sayin’) last weekend and were kind enough to invite the Flyin’ O’Brien (Owen, Jackson, Henry) to participate. The Flyins were only
able to complete one round, but Gigi, Lonny, Mike, Eric, Brandan and Liam were able to finish all three. Thanks you guys, it was great. After five years we are finally a Nielsen-Free family! For the first few years it was pretty neat to know we played a small role in the fates of so many TV Shows, and it was only because of Nielsen and my innate goodness that I began watching critically adored but ratings starved shows like LOST and Arrested Development, and my life is better for it. But the process (logging-in/out EVERY time someone leaves/ enters a room) began to wear and it was time (plus, five years is the limit). So you can now expect the South Jersey ratings for On Demand Porn to plummet while I keep reaching for the phantom Nielsen remote. My favorite pizza on Earth (Cape May Pizza on the Washington Street Mall) is apparently no longer. This according to some very close sources of mine who loved the crispy thin crust that has recently been replaced by a thicker, prefab version. My source invited a friend on MY strong recommendation only to be thoroughly devastated when the subpar pie arrived. Hopefully they were just caught on a bad weekend with short supplies. This was my favorite pie in 40 years of eating pies, so it was atop a pretty hefty list. Lastly this week, I’m pretty jazzed about my new short story which starts next week in the fantabulous first color issue of the year. It’s my first time working with recurring characters and I had a ton of fun with the premise. I only hope that fun translates to the page. You might recognize a few characters, as well. Feel free to hit me with your feedback. I’m always interested in hearing from those who think I’m great, and even moreso from those that think I suck (all criticism is useful criticism). I think it’s my Catcher in the Rye. Til next time, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
WILL never forget the day the Martians came to Cape May. There was anal probing and weird misshapen beings looming over me. But that was earlier in the day, when my steam-powered car ran out of fuel in Wildwood; the Martians arrived some hours later. I had been expecting it, of course: my old pal HG Wells had been down visiting, full of his usual warnings of invasion, and though sceptical (he was a hopeless morphine addict), I indulged the man. So there I was peering through the telescope in the topmost turret of The D’Catur Mansion, having shifted its usual focus from the dormitory windows of the distant convent, and looked skyward to coordinates given by a shaking HG, and what should I see? Invaders, in hundreds of bullet-shaped red rocketships, bearing down on us. At the windows I could make out fearsome insectile faces, twisted in rage and waving rayguns and blades. “How long til they arrive, old chum?” I asked the quivering HG, whilst sending my faithful manservant George to fetch a brace of muskets and a horn of powder, plus the cross-
bow I’d used to mortally wound Richard The Lionheart back in the day when he had the nerve to besiege my castle. “An hour at most,” advised HG, tearing up. “And their intent?” I asked, though I knew from their horrific appearance and the fancy Martian weaponry, that the answer would be bleak. “To conquer and enslave the men, and ravish the women to create a race of half-breed warriors,” he said, “based on my mathematical

calculations.” Well, we did our best: the city’s militia was summoned, the ladies hidden away in cellars, excepting Ma D’Catur, who along with The Cape May Women’s Guild armed themselves with knitting needles, stout leather belts and rolling pins and manned the barricades. Finally, 59 minutes later, the sky lit up and we heard a roaring as if from Hell itself as the infernal rocketships descended on to the lawn outside Congress Hall. Nobody said a word. “Your telescope, sir…” HG ventured at last, “what is its magnification? It did say 1,000 times on the outside.” “Ah yes,” I replied, “but I modified it so as to better see the young…er, the stars, and it is 10,000 times.” “And so what we took to be 100-foot long rocketships at a range of 1,000 miles…” “Yes sir, they were actually one-inch long.” I tell you, there was much merry squishing of tiny raging Martians underfoot that night. I have the minuscule trophies on the wall in the East Wing.

Harriett Sosson’s New Show Opening At SOMA

Opening Night Artist Reception is on Saturday, May 22
OMA NewArt Gallery presents the second exhibition of the 2010 season, “Reinventing the Romans,” provocative new paintings and collages on paper by regional artist Harriett Sosson. Also featured throughout the gallery are Max Samuelson’s Woody Bicycles, the latest handcrafted bicycles designed and built by this innovative Cape May artist and craftsman. Opening Night Artist Reception is Saturday evening, May 22 from 6-9pm at the gallery, in Carpenter’s Square Mall. Sosson’s extraordinary exhibition returns to the themes of antiquity and transformation that have permeated her work in recent years. This new series of dramatic paintings transforms the classical iconic faces of Roman statues into hauntingly familiar 21st century contemporary images. This time travel effect is psychologically insightful and startlingly comedic. Sosson uses her mastery of texture and paint to overlay the white marble of the Roman work with pulsating colors. Her skilled brush technique create life like images that capture the unique personalities of these

ancient Romans as seen through a contemporary lens. Sosson will also present a new series of collages created with a mixture of her ‘time-travel’ images of the past and ‘graffiti’ images of her beloved New York City. Max Samuelson, owner of Woody

Everywhere you look there are lovely surprises – a tea set from the 1920s, a cylinder from a turn-of-the-century Edison phonograph or a Wallce Nutting hand-colored photograph.
Chances are good that you won’t get past the front door without trying a piece of something delicious!
It’s the smallest shop on the mall, but it’s packed with beautiful things – Rolex watches, pearls, sapphires, porcelain vases, cut-glass and pocket watches to name a few.
There are more spices, oils, sauces, mustards, herbs, fresh coffees and salad dressing than you can shake a spoon at (they have those too!).
Well, strangely enough, they sell flowers! But not just that... Kate and her staff dispense advice not just on flowers but also on things like philosophy and good books and generally stimulating subjects.

And I just wanted to thank you for EVERYTHING you have done for me and my family. I feel so blessed to have had you in my life for 37+ years... many people never get the chance to know their grandparents so I know how fortunate I am. I’m also grateful that my son and your great grandson Dakota will remember his G-G-Ma. Thank you for the unconditional love and support you have always shown me. Thank you for the values you have instilled in me. Thank you for all the meals you made me (especially the fried patty pan squash!) But mostly, thank you for being the BEST grandmother that anyone could ask for. Until we meet again in heaven, know that I love you, and you are always in my heart. Your loving grandson, Jason

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I’ve got a summer job and I’m getting my driver’s license next week. There’s a girl in school I want to hang out with this summer, and I want to impress her, but I can’t afford to take her to the fancy places in town. She’s totally worth it, but I have to pay my own car insurance, plus I’m trying to save some money for college. How can I impress her on a budget? – Young and Broke Dear Young If you haven’t impressed her already, the Answer Lady has a particularly beautiful 15-year-old niece. She’s just throwing that out there. You sound like a responsible and thoughtful gentleman, and the fact that you want to impress this young lady will come across more loudly and clearly than any $100 dinner ever could. (Plus, that whole driver’slicense-and-a-job-thing puts you way ahead
of the game, even among some of your older ‘eligible bachelor’ peers, if you get the Answer Lady’s drift.) If your heart is set on a ‘fancy place,’ maybe you could plan a special evening at the end of the summer, once you’ve met your other obligations. If you do a little research, you’ll find that several places in town offer reduced-price dinner specials – in fact, The Merion Inn offers a $15 special, a true bargain. Also, Cape May Stage also offers student discounts – go to www.capemaystage.com for specifics. In the meantime, though, the
Answer Lady proposes a romantic evening starting at Hot Dog Tommy’s, followed perhaps by some miniature golf, then a stroll to the Fudge Kitchen for a pair of $1 custards. Then pick up everyone’s favorite free periodical, Exit Zero, and work on the crossword puzzle together. Romantic and fiscally sound – who could ask for anything more? Dear Answer Lady I need some ideas for teachers’ gifts, now that the end of the school year is fast approaching. –Mom on a Budget Dear Mom The Answer Lady was stumped by your question, as this is the first year she has a child in school. She checked with her sister, who offered several suggestions. Perhaps a A Place on Earth or Good Scents for some soothing soaps and lotions, or Tea By the Sea for calming beverages. Your offering should be directly proportional to the challenges presented by dealing with your little darling all day long. So, if your child is more ‘challenging’ than most, we may want to skip the niceties and head to Collier’s. They have gift cards and baskets too!

Cape Curiosity
A weekly historical column by Ben Miller, author of the best-selling “The First Resort”
E
VER since I began writing for Exit Zero in 2005 and especially since The First Resort was published, people have asked me all sorts of questions about Cape May’s history. It’ll happen in hotel pools, restaurants, or while I’m talking a walk around town and I love it. I am so enthusiastic about this city and I feel privileged to be able to share what I’ve learned about its past. For the next three editions of Cape Curiosity, I am going to deviate a bit from our regular routine of looking at a specific location and address some of the most common questions I hear. There are a lot of myths surrounding the Cape’s history, some true and some not, many of which are still being passed along today as fact. I look forward to setting the record straight with these columns and I will welcome any questions you may have by email- ben@ exitzero.us Let’s start with one I heard again this past Friday from a tour guide. The tour was rounding the corner of Decatur and Hughes when I heard the guide tell the group that the Empress
Contrary to local rumors, the Empress is not a Bed and Breakfast Ben Miller
building was only built a couple years ago and it’s a B&B. In actuality, the Empress was formerly known as the Bell Shields House and it was built in 1880. The Bell Shields House operated as a B&B
until it was sold and renovated by the architectural team of Olivieri, Shousky & Kiss, the same people who worked with the Southern Mansion and Angel of the Sea. Although the

Cape Curiosity ? From Page 71 building now includes eight guest rooms with baths, the Empress is a private cottage, not open to the public. Erroneous rumors that it’s a new building can further be put to rest by a New York magazine advertisement from October 2, 1989 that notes, “The Bell Shields House – Delicious breakfast in Victorian home, near mall and beach.” Next up is a common myth that is argued around town even today. Depending on who you speak with, you will hear that Beach Avenue was once called Beach Drive… but is it true? Yes. I know that there are people reading this column who may be disagreeing with me right about now, but hear me out. I’ve heard the arguments that an avenue is tree-lined or that it runs north to south and a drive is a designation reserved for a small road with no traffic lights. While those points may be true in a few select cities with regimented grid plans, it certainly isn’t the case in a small town like Cape May, or in most of America for that matter. Another point commonly referenced is the fact that Beach Avenue is technically Route 604, a county road. That argument doesn’t hold water, however, because the road
This 1870s map, drawn immediately after the road was built, clearly shows ‘Beach Drive’ Greater Cape May Historic Society
was built before Route 604 was designated by the county. Looking to the past, the answer can be found in historical maps that show it as both Beach Avenue and Drive, along with old newspaper articles that say the same. I believe the confusion comes from 1889, when the original road was reconfigured. A Philadelphia Inquirer article from that year titled ‘Seven Mile Beach Drive to Be at Once Completed’ includes the line, ‘There is a good foundation of a road from Sewell’s Point to
Robert Panaccio, VMD Robert Moffatt, VMD Patricia Link, DVM
Madison Avenue, Cape May, which will be reconverted into part of Beach avenue.’ Probing back further, I found an 1870 article from the Cape May that detailed the road’s original construction. It states, ‘Our beach drive is attracting a great deal of attention abroad as well as at home… We learn that over thirty stalls in the stable of one of our principal hotels have been engaged for the coming season, mostly in consequence of the anticipated drive.”

MOLLY and her sister KATIE came to the Shelter when their owner passed away. Unfortunately, there was no one in the family who could take them. They are happy and outgoing but accustomed to a quiet home. Ultimately because Katie and Molly are sisters and are so bonded to one another they MUST go to a home together. They only went outside to go potty, so they are actually indoor dogs. One of the girls weighs fourteen pounds and the other is thirteen. Small children may be too rambunctious. Please come meet them.
GEROGE is an older fellow and as friendly as can be. He greets you with nose-rubbing and purring if you hold him on your lap. He has a minor condition that can make his eyes water a bit, but it is nothing to worry about. If you’re looking for a friend who will even sit still when you cut his nails, stop by to see George. Adoption fee is $20.
SANDIE is a very sweet lab mix waiting for a wonderful family to adopt her. She’s a very happy gal who enjoys being with people and is very well behaved. She really loves to be outside and enjoys being out in the sun where she can run and play with her toys. Even though she gets excited when she is playing, she doesn’t get overlyhyper – which is especially good if there are children in the home. If you come up to the shelter to meet her, we promise you’ll be thrilled with just how awesome she is. Adoption fee is $95.
POPPY is a male tiger cat who was surrendered to the shelter when his owner moved. Poppy is quite friendly, but a bit on the independent side ... when we open his cage, he’s eager to hop down and explore. If you’re looking for a cat who will welcome your petting and love, but who also likes his own time, meet Poppy. Adoption fee is $35.
SANDY BROWN has had a very difficult time lately. She lived happily with a family for many years until that family got a new puppy. Sandy Brown is an older dog with arthritis, so the puppy was too much for her. A neighbor agreed to take Sandy Brown, but that didn’t last long because that neighbor had to move and couldn’t take Sandy Brown with her. Sandy Brown is a sweet, well-behaved older dog who deserves to spend her golden years in a home with people who will love and appreciate her. Adoption fee is $8.
VIXEN is the perfect name for this diminutive white and tiger female. An indoor/outdoor cat who’ll rub against your hand and accept your love and affection, but when she’s had enough, she’ll move away. If a sweet but independent girl seems like the type of cat you would like, then please stop by and see Vixen. Adoption fee is $20.

Activity Of The Week
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Take a trolley tour. Clang, clang, clang went the trolley Ding, ding, ding went the bell...
T
HE 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis kicked off the American century. It celebrated the future by showcasing advances in electricity and machinery. It introduced iced tea to the world, and popularized ice cream cones and hot dogs. Forty-three of the 45 American states participated, sharing local treats like puffed wheat and Dr. Pepper with a nationwide audience for the first time. John Philip Sousa played and Helen Keller gave a lecture. The fair was an important event in the development of American identity and, in 1944, just when it seemed ready to pass from the national consciousness, Judy Garland sang “The Trolley Song” in the film Meet Me in St. Louis. This film turned a salute to the future into a celebration of the past. The 1904 World’s Fair – technically the Louisiana Purchase Centennial Exposition – became the capstone for the Victorian period in America. When you take one of the trolley tours
sponsored by the Mid Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities, you can pretend you’re wearing your high-starched collar and hightopped shoes – and someone on board will be humming “The Trolley Song”. On this day, it was “Nana” Conners, who was taking her grandchildren, Bella, Aidan, and Jared, for a tour. (As Bella informed us, Nana “is always singing” and their parents were having lunch at one of those “fancy restaurants that takes, like, three hours.” God bless grandparents.) It was a crisp spring day, and the kids

danced with excitement as they picked up their tickets at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth and climbed aboard. Picking one of the smooth wooden seats was part of the fun, and the novelty of riding without a car seat may have the been the highlight for little Jared. A trolley is not the thing to do if you’ve been sitting in traffic for hours on your way to Cape May and the kids are fidgety. But, if you are ready to sit still for a while, trolley tours are a great way to see the sights and learn more about Cape May. They last a little over half an hour. The trolley guides give well-researched talks – even if you know a lot about Cape May, you will learn something. There are a variety of tours – the one Nana chose, Tales Around Town, was like storytime on wheels. Others are targeted to adults and focus on history, architecture, and ghosts. The schedule is available in This Week in Cape May. Even if your heartstrings don’t “zing,” you will surely “lose a jolly hour” on the trolley. Next week: Mark Memorial Day

The Movie Column
I
“Exit Through the Gift Shop” is reviewed by Tom Sims
T IS self-dubbed “The World’s First Street Art Disaster Movie.” And when the film first started, I watched the images of two-bit graffiti “bombers” and rolled my eyes expecting that this destructive, ugly lot of sorely misdirected painters would be glorified. But the director quickly focuses on the crème de la crème of street artistry in a quirky, engaging, and funny look at this underground world. How underground, you ask? The director’s “street” name is Banksy, and his appearance throughout the film is in shadows with disguised voice. Exit Through the Gift Shop starts with an oddball filmmaker named Thierry Guetta, who started as a filming enthusiast then turned his obsession toward filming street artists, eventually to documenting the work of elite street artists. He had reached new heights by filming the work of Shepard Fairey, the man responsible for the Obama image of “Hope” that permeated the last presidential election. During the filming of footage a number of years back, Fairey was
A scene from “Exit Through the Gift Shop”
in the midst of branding his face based on an illustration of wrestling celebrity Andre the Giant with the one-word tagline “Obey.” You’ve seen the artwork, you’ll recognize it during that part of the film. But it wasn’t until Guetta was contacted by mega-celebrity street artist Banksy that he felt he had reached the pinnacle of his filmmaking endeavors. Banksy did something he had never before—allowed Guetta to follow him into his underground world of pop street art. What Banksy didn’t know

is how terrible a film editor Guetta was. The result: Banksy took the footage captured by Guetta and turned it into “Exit through the Gift Shop.” Rhys Ifans a British actor who appeared with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts in Notting Hill and in an offbeat film entitled Danny Deckchair narrates the film. Sundance was first to host Exit Through the Gift Shop to a standing room only crowd at Sundance this year. There is some speculation that parts of the film are more “mockumentary” than documentary (that is, “put on”), but this does little to detract from the film. And no it has not played in New Jersey (yet, anyway…). But I’m always on the prowl for the members of the Cape May Film Society! I’ve already contacted the distribution representative to host the NJ Premiere. Stay tuned! And if you’re not a member of the Film Society, why not? Call me at 609884-6700 to learn how you can support our filmmaking educational outreach to students and at-risk youth.

ANY of those who saw the screening of Adopt A Sailor last Monday identified a theme in Charles Evered’s work that is also apparent in Cape May Stage’s production of Class: an innocent or student changes the life of a sophisticate or teacher. Our new show, Class tells the story of a master acting teacher and how a mysterious student transforms his life. Master acting teachers begin with Stanislavski in Russia and pick up in the United States with Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, Sandy Meisner, Robert Lewis, Harold Clurman and Uta Hagen. The Fervent Years by Harold Clurman tells the story of the Group Theatre, where most of the aforementioned teachers had some affiliation. Harold Clurman founded the Group Theatre and the Second Stage is proud to bring Ronald Rand’s internationally acclaimed production of Let It Be Art! to the Robert Shackleton Playhouse on June 7. Ronald Rand plays Harold Clurman in a tour-de-force production that will entertain as well as enlighten. Mr. Rand is also a well-known acting teacher who has traveled the globe with his workshop called The Art of Transformation. There is a special package offered that saves people $5 if they sign up for both the show and the workshop. The workshop is $35 for adults and $25 for students. The show is $20 general admis-
Emmy-nominated actor Thaao Penghlis, who is currently starring in Cape May Stage’s Class, is presenting his new film, Journeys, at the theatre on May 24 sion with a special $12.50 admission for students. These opportunities don’t come along very often. Anyone interested in performing or even knowing about how performers craft their work should be at this workshop! The Second Stage brings world-class artists to Cape May – how extraordinary to find this program in our own backyard. The Second Stage is also producing actor Thaao Penghlis’ Journeys on May 24, which will shortly be a television series. Thaao has traveled to sacred sites around the world and has encountered people and places that are not in any tourist guidebook. Come discover what he has experienced. Some of it is very funny and all of it is fascinating. And because of the

intimacy of our playhouse, you’ll have the opportunity to ask this Emmy-nominated actor questions. You’ll gain special insight when you later see it on television. Cape May Stage is thankful to PNC Arts Alive for sponsoring a special senior matinee on May 30 for the world premiere of Class. Everyone is talking about this special play with two bravura performances. Seniors enjoy a special discount for this May 30 matinee. Soon the Second Stage will expand the programming to include comics and cabaret artists. Right now we are complimenting our main-stage production with programs that give even more insight into the subject of the play and the artists performing in it.

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
OU’VE heard so much about Red Knot and their decline, and the political tug-of-war that was the knot’s undoing. (Oh, aren’t those writers so clever.) You might have despaired of seeing this celebrated longdistance migrant. If so, and if you live within a tank of gas of Cape May, now is the time to head for the beaches of Delaware Bay and feast your eyes on a celebrity among shorebirds. The scientific name, Calidris canutus, is descriptively apt. A calidris is a type or genus of shorebird. The species name, canutus, comes from the name of an old English king (whose full name was The Great Canute) who was, as all kings are, surrounded by sycophants and who was, as most kings tend to be, a bit vain about his lofty standing. Or, in this case, sitting. As the story goes, one day one of the king’s boot-lickers observed that Ol’ Canute was so powerful that even the tides of the ocean did his bidding. To find out whether this theory would hold water (being clever again, I am), the king had his throne set down below the tide line and
ordered the incoming tide to halt. What happened is just about what you might expect. What happened to the flattering lackey is not recorded. Like the coin-calling king the knot, too, spends a portion of its life between the tide lines. In most places it forages on small bivalves that are exposed to its probing bill at low tide.

On the shores of Delaware Bay, it is drawn to the horseshoe crab eggs that are deposited as the tide retreats. Knot are gray-backed, ruddy-breasted. They are larger than the other sandpipers with whom they normally associate. They often associate with Ruddy Turnstones which are red, black and white. To see knot, plot your life to be on a sandy beach on Delaware Bay (north of the Villas) at the onset of a falling tide. Can you see knot when the tide is full or low? Sometimes. But with numbers reduced, the peak foraging period coincides with a falling tide. Be there. Yes, you will need binoculars. No, you don’t need a spotting scope. At some places (most notably Reed’s Beach) there are often interpreters on hand who will have a spotting scope and who will help visitors to find birds. Two important considerations... Number one: Do not disturb the birds. They are trying to feed. You disturb them, not only do they stop eating, they waste energy avoiding you. Be

Bird Droppings ? From Page 101 responsible. Stay behind the signs warning you not to go farther. Number two: The places where knots and other shorebirds concentrate are commonly where people have homes. Both species have a penchant for sandy beach. In your enthusiasm for knot, try not to do something that will cause a resident to become undone (cleverness rises again). Do not just stop in the road. Do not park on private property or block a driveway. Do not, under any circumstances, trespass on private property. There are designated parking places at known viewing areas. Please use them. How long will the knot run? Until about May 27. After that, most of the birds head north for the Arctic to breed. They’ll return in July – but not in the numbers or concentrations. Consider the fact they have flown non-stop from South America to the Delaware Bayshore beaches in May to fuel up in a few weeks for the non-stop journey to the Arctic to breed, raise young, and return back to the Delaware Bayshore beaches before they head back to winter in South America. Too bad they don’t get frequent flyer miles. Enjoy. It’s not like you don’t deserve a celebrated natural spectacle now and again. PS: Bring one or two young people with you. If you want someone to show you Red Knot so you’ll be sure not
to miss it, stop by Cape May Bird Observatory (609-884-2736), THE place for anything to do with nature. We can show what to look for and the best spots to find them. The CMBO is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point and is open 9:30am to 4:30pm every day. Pick up the current schedule, free checklist and birding map, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, the latest in books, bird feeders, and some great new and fun merchandise, including our exclusive CMBO logo jewelry, clothing, jackets, bags, and more. Take a look at the sightings log to check what’s being seen, or take a look at the online sightings in the info center, scan the bookshelves, pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, or just browse around. If you have questions about anything else, ask any of our staff or volunteers – they are always glad to help with anything you need, even things you didn’t know you needed yet. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, you can visit www. BirdCapeMay.org, where birding Cape May is a click away. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the Cape May Bird Observatory), he has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
