THE building we all know as Uncle Bill’s Pancake House at Beach Avenue and Perry Street, started out life as the Congress Hall Bar, built by former Congress Hall owner Joe Uhler in the early 1950s. The seats on the outside of the round, inner section were originally part of an outdoor patio that circled the building.

Once the bar was closed, the building became a Howard Johnson’s, then the Beach Plum restaurant, before finally becoming Uncle Bill’s. – Ben Miller

Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

AM NOT done talking about parking because it’s probably the second most important issue in town (after Convention Hall). Last week I mentioned how there are problems with the credit card processing in the city’s meters. It seems that the problem might be bigger than I thought.

Every local business person I have spoken to in the past week has had similar stories about meters not taking credit cards.

Ugh. We now have a new administration in place, given the election on May 11 of three new council members – Jack Wichterman, Bill Murray and Deanna Fiocca. All three candidates were endorsed by Exit Zero, which means I’m very happy with their election and am looking forward to some thoughtful decision-making by the council, which also includes Mayor Ed Mahaney and Terri Swain.

Right now the city is embroiled in an increasingly ugly battle with the Friends and Neighbors of East Cape May over the city’s plan to instal parking meters in the east end of the city. The group organized a petition calling for a public referendum on the subject, but the city had it ruled invalid last week after challenging the voting rights of one of the group’s committee members.

Did it really have to get to this stage?

I’ve written a lot of words about how Mayor Mahaney has run this council, even though it’s not his job to run the council, and I hope that the three new members will ensure that the council follows proper procedures – that is, that a strong, competent city manager makes all the day-to-day administrative decisions, ensuring that the decisions made by council are properly executed. Right now, it seems pretty obvious that City Manager Bruce

MacLeod is in the pocket of Mayor Mahaney, who is the de facto city manager. That will all change when the new council members come in. Question is – will Bruce remain as City Manager? The reason I make this point is that it’s ludicrous that the city is fighting a lawsuit against its own people, all because they took a decision to instal parking meters without carrying out a proper traffic survey to see what kind of income would be generated and whether or not the meters would actually be effective – many believe that people will avoid the planned new meters on Beach Avenue and simply park on the adjacent streets.

And it’s also become apparent that the rebuilding of Convention Hall has been woefully mismanaged by this administration, but more on that later.

The city is planning on using old meters for the east end – meters which presumably were uprooted when they installed the new system in the heart of town, which is quite the worst system I have ever seen, and that’s a sentiment I hear on the streets very often.

The system the city installed a couple years ago is either deliberately calculated to confuse motorists in an attempt to obtain more money

in parking fines (which is obnoxious in the extreme) or was an ill-conceived plan that has been executed incompetently (which is unfortunate in the extreme).

There are parking meter poles on Cape May streets with no meter attached. Don’t you think that the average motorist getting out of his or her car might assume that this means there is NO meter in operation? Especially if their spot is not next to the little blue payment meter, and especially if the little number on the curb that indicates their spot has been rubbed off, which happens often.

And, assuming that the average motorist realizes that they DO have to pay, they then have to deal with the likelihood that the meter will not accept credit cards, even though it says it does.

I mean, c’mon folks!

How about the new council sits down and takes a long, hard look at this problem. And it IS a problem. I’ve said it before – one stupid meter problem can turn off a visitor for life, a visitor who likely spends thousands of dollars here every year.

In Bethesda, Maryland, the city recently started a new scheme where you can use your cellphone to pay for parking. The old-fashioned metal meters can be used – no need for fancy new plastic ones that don’t work. All you need to do to adapt the meter is put a sticker on it. I strongly suggest that council members speak to their colleagues in Bethesda and discuss how the new scheme is working and also put a stop to their plans for the east end until an intelligent new plan is configured for parking in the WHOLE city. There are a lot of places competing with Cape May for tourist dollars – we can’t afford to be so ignorant of visitors’ needs.

A Night On The Town

Bars, restaurants, culture and events... Dan Mather’s weekly guide to what’s going on in Cape May

DON’T do scary movies. Personally, I find that fear is a negative emotion.

So, maybe I was creeped out by the zombie-looking waitress mannequin sticking out the front of the building.

Maybe I was a little put off by the sign advertising haunted tours. Maybe I AM a bit of a sissy. But – no matter what the reason – I have definitely been missing out on Elaine’s Dinner Theatre.

Luckily, Will Knapp, who plays the title role in Elaine’s new production Cy Specter’s Spectacular Circus, knows how to entice me into doing just about anything: free booze.

So, this past Thursday Tanya Zotava (my girlfriend), Zhenya Drozdao (a friend who was staying with me) and Victor Grasso (not sure what to do with himself without his wife) managed to walk the entire 200 feet (roughly) from my front door to Elaine’s bar.

After we loaded up on Kraken rum and Coke, Will offered Victor and I a tour of the haunted dining room. We checked out the Halloween themes and photos from The Exorcist before the ever-so-hilarious Derek

Miller, also an actor at Elaine’s, unleashed the old snake-in-a-can gag on me. A sudden burst of air and material from behind set me sprinting and cursing. Luckily, as Victor noted, I didn’t spill a drop of Kraken.

We came back in with enough time to load up on another free drink, snack on some tacos and quesadillas, and make our way to a table to watch the show. I won’t give away specifics about the show, but I will say that

the audience laughed at every gag/joke in the performance, and I don’t think their laughter was solely attributed to the open bar. Hell, half of our group spoke English as a second language, and they were cracking up at a lot of the innuendo.

The cast stuck to their outrageous characters and did an excellent job improvising and playing with the audience. At one point actor Parker Smith, who was playing the role of a magician, needed help from the audience. He asked local beauty Laura Zeitler, who runs The Columbia House with her husband Jim, on stage and guessed her named to be MILFred. I’m sorry if you don’t get why that’s funny, because I’m not going to explain it – it’s inappropriate.

The point I want to make is this: though I have no need to see the show again, I had a great time. It’s definitely an overlooked way to spend a night. So, before you set off to yet another night at the same old bar, try Elaine’s. You’ll drink, you’ll eat, you’ll laugh and if you’re as faint hearted as me, you might even scream.

The Undertow

IX Feet Undertow... It is with warm cockles that I welcome you all to the Memorial Day Weekend Edition of The Undertow. And now that that’s done, here’s a fond

farewell.

Last Undertow of the Week of the Week: The little ditty you hold before you right now is officially my FINAL Undertow… until my next one. With my new job at Morey’s Piers (it’s been six months, can I still call it new?) taking front and center and consuming every moment of my waking life, and with a paucity of usable materiel now that I’m an Erma guy working in Wildwood, it has been determined that Ye Olde Undertowe will be taking an indefinite hiatus.

So I’m going to write this really fast before I crumble into a quivering mass of jelly and become an emotional wreck (EZ Editor Jack Wright has already rejected six drafts as the column, dismissing them as “more soapy than your average Sex and the City episode”).

November or whenever it was I officially landed my new job at Morey’s Piers, Jack and

I had a chat over (several too many) fine martinis in the Brown Room to discuss the impact of this new gig on the little wonder you’re reading right now. (At least that’s how I’m choosing to remember it in my sentimental, Absolut-soaked brain.)

The decision was made – Undertow would go the way of the Dodo and Dave Kindred’s fabulous back page column in the Sporting News, to the big recycling bin in the sky.

But wait! After we had one more meeting to talk about it, we completely reversed ourselves and decided that the decision would be to decide to do nothing and keep plugging

away until I couldn’t do it any more.

So, before this space becomes much less about the besotted goings-on in Cape May and more of a travelogue on the joys of driving the 7.3 miles from Erma to Wildwood and the many wondrous sights one can encounter on Route 47 as you pass the sewage treatment plant on the salt marshes, I’ve decided I can’t do it any more. If only the magazine was called Exit 4...

So I hope to keep contributing on a hereand-there basis and sincerely hope you’re all enjoying my latest short (“Killer Read”, which runs seven more weeks… it’s one of my favorites). And I’ll definitely be in the next color issue (wasn’t the first one gorgeous?) ’cuz I’m writing a story on… wait for it… THE GHOST SHIP! (More on that in a bit, but man did that felt really good to say.)

So anyway, I’ve been mentally prepared for a few months now for the end to arrive, but if you see me walking around the boardwalk looking like I’m forgetting something, you’ll

So now the big mystery can be revealed – by the time you read this the Ghost Ship will be open! Unbelievably, the Press of Atlantic City website (which, in their defense, carried an excellent article and accompanying video about THE GHOST SHIP) spoiled the surprise before I could when they ran their story last Sunday. Damn it!

But anyway, she now sits on Mariner’s Landing Pier and she is absolutely spectacular.

I don’t want to give away too much, but Ghost Ship is a multilevel walkthrough dark attraction featuring animatronics and live actors and it will scare the hell out of you. I’ve got a great group of committed actors who have just gone for it at every turn.

Among them are Cape May folk and fellow writers Leslie Truluck (CMS&W, CMC Herald) and John Alvarez (aka Johnny Wawa, formerly of this magazine, currently of the CMS&W). Leslie has been a real find and John brings with him a wealth of theater experience and has been invaluable in helping me train the other actors.

By this I mean I know I can send John into a room and say, “Act scary!” and he will set the tone for the day and loosen up the rest of the crew. This may not seem like much, but, well… it is.

John, Leslie, Chris Nagle (my second-in-command) and the rest of the Ghost Ship crew have been making me look very smart these last couple of weeks. And THAT, my friends, is hard to do.

And for a little Ghost Ship trivia, the gorgeous painting of the ship adorning most of the publicity was produced by, guess who? Victor Grasso. I know. I hate that guy.

In other non-Cape May news, the family and I jammed ourselves into the old Dodge Caravan and tooled up the highway to Reading, PA and the marriage of my nephew, Andrew Beaver (yes, my sister Erin married a guy

named Larry Beaver – it’s been 20 years, they’ve heard all the jokes, feel free to add your own).

Second Most Godforsaken Place on Earth: Reading, PA. We actually stayed in an apartment in my mom’s retirement facility in Reading then headed over to the Elverson Country Club for the ceremony and reception.

Most Godforsaken Place on Earth: Elverson, PA. Brothers Mike and Dan jammed away at some pre-wedding love songs and delivered a beautiful version of The Beatles “I Will” during the ceremony, where Andrew officially made an honest woman of Kelsie Bicking. It was my second time meeting Kelsie, the first being at the killer Acoustic Mayhem gig Will Knapp (Ding!) and I played at Manayunk’s Dawson Street Pub in February. But Kels is a sweet kid and sang a beautiful song (“The First One You Reach For”) to her new husband and barely wavered. I, on the other hand, could not get through my song at Will and Holly’s wedding and I wasn’t marrying any of them! So kudos, Kels.

Being at a large gathering with more than one O’Brien brother in attendance (there were four) is always a case study in social mores. Where 97% of those in attendance traded platitudes and warm hugs, we four sat and made fun of them. It wrong, it’s rude, it’s what we do. It’s probably a defense mechanism triggered by a combined 150+ years of bald jokes.

Is it wrong that it’s noon on Sunday and I’m all aquiver about the finale of Lost?

So here we are, the end of yet another column where I haven’t talked about Cape May but which I hope you’ve enjoyed anyway.

And since I suck at long goodbyes I won’t string this one out. So, goodbye, good luck and I hope to see you again in the fall. If I don’t, it means Jack Wright has fired me and is a big fat jerk. ’Til next time, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

DO feel sorry for cavemen, whom history has not been kind to. In the early days of Cape May there was a thriving multicultural feel to the place, with settlers, Lenape Indians, Cavemen (or Neanderthals, as we learned types like to call them), some Scotchmen, a dozen Mexica and at least one werewolf, living in relative peace and harmony. The settlers brought modern technology to the mix, the Lenape colorful blankets and nice little horses, the Scotchmen whisky and maudlin poetry, the Mexica open heart surgery, the werewolf a certain rough glamour, and the Cavemen er… well, caves and clubs and body hair.

They were not bad sorts, either, compared to the Scotchmen and the Indians (once liquored up both of these groups would run amok after a whisky or two, setting fires, brawling with bare fists and weeping uncontrollably) and the werewolf, who really was a total beast for several nights a month.

But the Cavemen, they just sat around painting with their bare hands, scratching, belching and hitting things with their clubs.

That, sadly, was their downfall: no matter how hard I tried, I was unable to get across that if one’s ‘vocabulary’, no matter the occasion, consisted of a blow to the head from a stone club then their future wasn’t exactly looking bright. “How do you do?” BANG. “Excuse me, is this table taken?” BANG. “Need food!” BANG! “I’m going to strike you with my club.” BANG! Soon, this apparently boorish behaviour was making the others a touch nervous, and

a fashion arose where people wore crude helmets night and day, in case one had to socially interact with them (much like a trip to Wildwood these days). I myself woke more than once with a bump rising on my temple, after merely extending a hand to shake with a Caveman, as part of my ongoing socialization of them.

In the end, enough was enough, and in the spirit of keeping all of the other populations happy, we simply (and secretly) bore holes in the Cavemen’s clubs while they slept (in a great mangy heap on the beach) and stuffed them with dynamite. We then all vacated the area for a few hours and let nature take its course. When the explosions died down, we returned and all pretended there had been no Cavemen in the first place.

Of course, there was a lesson there and so the settlers moved on and poisoned all of the Indians, shot most of the Scotchmen, made the werewolf into a rug and forced the Mexica to clean house.

Still, I feel we acted a little badly.

Dear Answer Lady A good friend will be visiting for Memorial Day. We only see one another a couple of times a year, so I look forward to her visits. However, she just emailed to inform me that she’ll be bringing her little dog along – he’s one of those tiny things that she totes around in her purse. It’s not that I have anything against dogs – I like them just fine.

I’m just afraid the little critter will cramp our girls’ weekend. Can I ask her not to bring him?

– Not a Dog-Hater, More Like Dog-Ambivalent Dear Ambivalent You should be grateful that the Answer Lady is not coming to visit you for the weekend with her canine baby in tow – he weighs 112 pounds. At least your friend’s dog is portable.

There is no point in antagonizing your friend by requesting that she leave Fido behind; surely it won’t kill you to play hostess to a

hound for one weekend. Depending upon what your plans are, you may be able to incorporate the little fellow. Naturally, one shouldn’t make reservations at a place like 410 Bank Street, for instance, and then turn up with a dog in one’s purse. On the other hand, there were at least four dogs hanging out at the outside bar The Beach Shack for happy hour last Friday night (two of them wearing Rusty Nail T-shirts and sunglasses, as a matter of fact, unless the Answer Lady was hallucinating). All were

leashed, well-behaved, and accompanied by equally well-behaved owners. Dogs are also welcome outside at Zoe’s, too. But if you need some pooch-free time, give The Doggie Nanny a shout at doggienanny@hotmail.com.

Dear Answer Lady My dog seems to have a serious dislike for my new boyfriend. Okay, maybe it’s more like hatred. She’s always pacing and staring at him when he comes over, and she growls and snarls if he tries to pet her. She’s never acted like this with anyone else and I don’t know what to make of it. – Ginger’s Mom Dear Ginger’s Mom Since your romance is new, the Answer Lady believes a wait-and-see attitude may be in order here. It could be anything from conflicting astrological signs between your boyfriend and your pet, to the worst-case possibility that he is a homicidal maniac or is otherwise not be what he appears to be (hopefully not, of course). Dogs operate on instinct, so pay attention. In the meantime, I wouldn’t leave them alone together until you figure it out.

Y NAME is Travis Whitaker and I’m a private investigator. I like to sit in my modest little Queen Street office with my feet kicked up on my beat-up old desk because it seems like the kind of thing a cocky PI would do on his downtime, not that I’ve had much of that lately.

I salvaged the desk from a yard sale a little over a year-and-a-half ago, despite repeated promises to myself that I’d never be THAT GUY, the guy who endangers a large chunk of humanity by pulling over abruptly out of steady moving traffic to investigate the shiny bauble displayed in someone’s front yard that they have somehow deemed unworthy of taking up space in their house but for some reason would be perfect in mine. It made me feel white trashy and so unlike the kind of thing a person should be doing in Cape May, even though hundreds, maybe thousands, of people do it every damn Saturday with little regard for the well-being

I JUST HAVE TO HAVE THAT C3PO COAT RACK, DAMMIT! NOW GET OUT OF MY WAY! But I digress. Point is, it was a damn fine-looking desk. It had character and I wanted it, so there we are. The desk was here when it looked like Whitaker Investigations wouldn’t make it through its first summer in existence. I always thought it would be a “starter” desk, sure to be replaced by a fancier model once the money came flowing in. And six months ago the money DID start flowing in, not great big gobs of it, but enough to keep the lights on and make a few needed improvements.

While the rest of the office received substantial upgrades (and by substantial I mean drywall, wiring, working electricity, that sort of thing…), I found myself unable to do away with the old girl, which peeled black paint like dirty dandruff. I guess something about it felt safe, welcoming.

After the harrowing events of last summer (cannibalistic B&B owners… it’s a long story) it felt right to have something familiar greet me in the office when I cracked it open every morning. It wasn’t a dog, but who had the time?

The desk, and who knows why I’m talking so much about the damn desk, I should probably talk to someone about that (probably something to do with my mother), sat about 10 feet directly inside the elegant French doors which, to my everlasting credit, I’d had installed before I became solvent, though my partner, Tim Demarco refused to believe it.

“No WAY you have enough taste for something as architecturally beautiful yet functional as that,” Tim had said. He was always saying nice things like that. And while I pretended to be stung by his slings and arrows, truth was I’d picked these particular French doors because they were the last set in stock over at Cape May Lumber, it was getting cold, and there was a giant hole in the

Plus Kevin Carr offered me 10% off if I’d take them that day. They were about three times as much as I was looking to spend (I mean, come on, it’s a door), but at the time I’d been flush with the inheritance money that had allowed me to open the business to begin with, and so caught in the thrill of setting up my own PI business that I threw caution to the wind. Besides, once the cash and the dames started rolling in who was going to care how much I spent on the damn doors, right?

It was easy to laugh now, of course, but nagging in the back of my head, the thing that keeps me motivated is the fact that I was about two weeks from closing up shop when the phone rang and the bed & breakfast case fell into my lap.

On the wall to my left is a small array of driftwood frames, hanging next to the door of the records room. The records room was still mostly empty, but it’s now decked to the teeth with all manner of filing cabinet and container, and now had modern walls with their electrical outlets and unexposed studs and such. Amazing what a few thousand dollars and one honest contractor in Cape May can do.

A Killer Read ? From Page 67 peopled by members of more than 20 prominent Cape May families, doctors and lawyers and such, until yours truly busted it up like Captain America busting a Nazi spy ring. I was quite the Warholian celebrity for 15 minutes.

“LOCAL P.I. BREAKS HUGE CASE,” read the Herald headline.

“CAPE MAY P.I. SOLVES HISTORIC MYSTERY,” read the Press of Atlantic City.

“JERSEY SHORE DETECTIVE UNCOVERS BIZARRE PLOT,” said the Philadelphia Inquirer.

There were also smaller articles from the Philadelphia Daily News, Wilmington News Journal, and New York’s Post, Times and Daily News, all basically rehashing the same three or four points. But the case did also manage a few national mentions, in publications as varied as Newsweek, Time and Entertainment Weekly, which gave Dateline’s dramatization of the case a C+. But my personal favorite came from the National Enquirer...

“NEW JERSY SUPERCOP SLEEPING WITH ALL SIX NEW JERSEY HOUSEWIVES!” I’ve never even MET any of these housewives, never knew who they were before seeing this little headline, let alone slept with any of them. But I tell you what, I figured out what the hell the Bravo network was in a hurry.

Then came the one that hurt the most...

“SMALL-TIME DICK STUMBLES ONTO BREAK OF A LIFETIME,” read the Exit Zero magazine cover, along with a highly unflattering photo of myself, stumbling out of the Ugly Mug or maybe Jackson Mountain late after a celebratory binge. Mug. It was the Mug. Now I remember, it was a Terrible Tuesday. But the reason it hurt me deep down inside where I’m soft like a woman, the reason was… because it was true.

I had this actor friend once, years ago, during my days as a construction worker and parttime bartender at the King Edward bar in the Chalfonte. This actor

friend, he confesses to me once that all actors are fearful and insecure because, deep down where the truth lurks, none of them think they’re any good, and that someday soon, very soon, someone is going to figure them out and expose them for the frauds they are. And he was a GOOD actor, mind you. Imagine how the bad ones must feel. And while there were plenty of actors I wish would be exposed, never to darken my TV screen again, I knew exactly how he felt. It was an intricate, delicate series of near-misses and coincidence that led to my breaking of the B&B case. I found it hard to sleep sometimes when I thought of the tenuous connections that held the whole thing together. I was about three microseconds from giving up on the damn thing until I saw the jalapeno. The damn jalapeno. And all the hell that followed.

But, eh, nobody wants to hear me bitch about the biggest case of my life, the one that made my career, so I tried not to do it too often. Fact was, luck or not, I did solve the case. Fact was, tenuous connections or not, it did all hold together. Fact was, I’d earned those damn headlines and the upsurge in work (and money and notoriety) that came with them.

And fact was, life is an intricate series of near-misses and coincidences, so my plan was to try and enjoy it and bugger the rest of them.

But the Exit Zero story bugged me, gnawed at me, so I kept it there, six feet to my left, as a constant reminder that we’re all frauds. Then I made a note to see what one had to do to get in touch with those housewives. A couple of them were pretty hot.

“Morning, boss,” Tim bellowed upon entering the office.

In such confined space his merriment was like a shotgun blast.

“You’ve got to lay off the Red Bull,” I replied and took the hot cup of Wawa coffee Tim offered.

“Shit,” Tim replied. “Red Bull drinks me.”

We tapped cups and drank.

Tim nodded modestly. “I know you like that fancy crap.”

You see? Hurtful.

“What’s on the docket, jefe?”

I hated it when he called me “jefe” or “bwana” or “boss” or any of the 27 derivations thereof, but he knew that, so that’s why he did it.

In six months he’d built up am impressive array of them.

I answered, “You know, that shingle out front reads Whitaker AND Demarco, so maybe give it a rest for a day.”

Tim spread his arms, “Hey, whatever you say, Kingfisher.”

I wiped a hand across my face. Tim was a guy that needed a role, and right now his role was employee. When the time came, that role would change. In the meantime he’d pretend to be subordinate and I’d pretend to let him. Guy saved my life, I owed him at least that.

“So,” he asked again. “Any jobs today?”

“Paperwork,” I told him.

“Drag.”

“For me,” I continued. “For you, brighten up, officers Genaro and Austin will be here in about 10 minutes. I wangled you some time

“Still,” Tim said and hugged me, briefly but tightly, his ever-present 5 o’clock shadow slicing into my rosy, freshly shaven cheek, “I know you had to call in a favor. I appreciate it.”

I waved him off. “Don’t sweat it.” But Tim was right; I’d now used every ounce of his pull I had with the CMPD, which was not very much to begin with, to get Tim on the range. In all of my post-case newspaper and TV interviews, I’d been sure to heap effusive praise upon the Cape May Police Department for their swift and smart actions in the B&B case. I did this with 100% sincerity, for were it not for the CMPD I would most likely be rotting, folded up in a few squares of toilet paper, in a landfill under the George Washington Bridge. The unintended consequences of such public praise came in the

form of greater police cooperation on my ensuing cases, the occasional turning of the blind eye on others, and sometimes even a personal favor. These cost a little more in capital and were difficult to repay, but I didn’t ask often and planned to keep it that way.

“Now go clean your gun. And for Christ’s sake, get a haircut you dirty hippie.”

Tim looked back with a smile and his Zen calm, flipped his long locks over his shoulders, and said, “Never.”

He went into the second office, his office, and prepped his gear for the range. I smiled. A year ago, hell, nine months ago, we were little more than passing acquaintances, knew each other well enough from some common social circles to say hello on the street or bum a cigarette (which I’m trying to quit and GOD could I use one right now), but in the 48 hours that comprised the B&B case (which some on the CMPD had nicknamed the Dead & Breakfast case, which I took as a sign of grudging respect) we’d grown closer than brothers. That’ll happen when you take turns pulling each other’s fat out of the fire.

spy) that landed the dame, but not in my world. In my world I get to watch my buddy walk away with the blonde, a real and true looker, while I had to deal with the endless phone calls and paperwork. The blonde was the one we rescued from the old, inactive coal cellar last summer just before she got fricasseed. It was me, the last man standing, that saved her life. Yet Tim got the girl. This should have burned me to no end, but Tim was such a good guy I couldn’t help but be happy for him. Besides, I’d been pretty unlucky in love for most of my adult life and was in no hurry to rush back in there. Tim’s girl, Lizzy Myers, lived in Kennett Square, PA, about two hours from us, but came down every other weekend or so and was still deep in the glow of newfound smittenness with her Orlando Bloom-ish savior. They both were. It was quite sickening, to be honest. Jealous much?

“Ready to go,” Tim announced as he emerged from his office with the small black case that held his silver, snub-nosed .38, just like mine.

“Look who’s all growed up.”

He cocked an eyebrow. “Need a cigarette?”

“Desperately.”

So we stepped outside and I guiltily lit up, started pacing and drumming my fingers on the railing.

Tim asked, “All right, what’s bugging you?”

I paused a moment. “Am I that easy to read or are you just scarily observant?”

Tim shrugged. “Can’t it be both?”

He was my partner and deserved to know, though the news wasn’t good and I hated to do anything to harsh his life buzz, but here we were. “To be honest with you Tim, finances aren’t, uh, what they were. The well’s running a little dry.”

“I thought we were doing well?”

I took a deep drag. “We were.

We are. But I sank most of the cash

back into the business. Computers, safes, alarms, all that crap. It costs money. And now that all the media hype has died down, well, the phone, she ain’t ringing quite as much.”

Tim asked, “How bad is it.”

It was my turn to shrug.

“We’ve got a couple of months, three maybe, before it’s time to really get worried. I’m sorry, Tim. I thought reinvesting was the right thing to do.”

“It was. Absolutely. We’ve got top of the line everything. You need that to compete these days.”

This much was true. We had all the 007 spy gear you could ever want – listening devices, night vision goggles, pen cameras, all the stuff you see in the spy movies.

Trouble was, we rarely had call to use it. But God forbid I get the one phone call from the rich client who NEEDS it and I don’t have it…

“We’ll be all right,” Tim said.

For some reason when he said it I believed it.

“We’ll see,” I replied.

“Come on now,” Tim cajoled.

“You know how much you love telling me the story how you were broke and just about to close up shop, then the phone rings and two days later you’re the most famous PI in the country. It’s fate, brother. Dame Fortuna will determine our lot, not a bigger ad in the AC Press.”

I sucked at the cigarette some more. “I suppose you’re right.”

“Of course I’m right,” Tim assured me. “You know what we need right now? A good old fashioned murder mystery. Something to put our names back in the papers. Trust me, my friend. It’ll all be good.”

Then the phone rang. We stared at it.

Tim said, “Sounds like the phone.”

“You better answer it then.”

It rang five more times. I sighed. Tim was clearly not going to pick it up.

“Come on, what are the odds?”

I said and picked up the phone.

Odds, it turned out, were pretty good.

Cape Curiosity

A weekly historical column by Ben Miller, author of the best-selling “The First Resort”

BEGAN a series of three Cape May myth-buster columns last week, starting things off with a question about the Empress and the age-old Beach Avenue or Drive debate. This week I’m going to continue with three of the more common stories you may hear around Cape May on any given day. Are they fact or fiction… let’s take a look!

Lets start out with one rumor that has been around Cape May since the early 1900s and even made its way on to promotional literature. Prior to the days of Urban Renewal, the Tides condominium property between Jackson Street and Decatur was home to a mammoth hotel known as the Baltimore.

The Baltimore was a wooden structure four stories tall and spanned a city block. It was generally believed by locals, tour guides and historians that it had been moved from Chicago to Cape May on barges. Older generations passed along the story to current generations, tour guides told the story to patrons and a mid-1900s Baltimore Inn brochure said it had been moved – but was it?

Columbia Avenue derived its name from the Columbia Hotel, which sat on Beach Avenue between Ocean and Decatur Don Pocher

No. The Baltimore Inn was constructed in Cape May, just as the Baltimore Inn in Chicago was constructed there. There were two different sets of lodgings with the same name. The rumor stems from the hotel’s first proprietress, Miss Harrison, who left her

position as manager of the Baltimore Inn in Chicago to become the first manager of the new Cape May hotel.

Cape Curiosity ? From Page 87 confirms this by reporting, “One new hotel has been built,” and “Mrs Harrison… will open the new Baltimore Inn, at Cape May on June 1.”

Let’s move on to the often-repeated tale of Henry Hudson being enchanted with the area, anchoring off the coast of the Cape and charting the land. Again, this story is off the mark. Hudson was the first to chart the Cape May area after spending a night off the shore near the Point, but it wasn’t his decision. Hudson’s first mate on the Half Moon, Robert Juet, noted in his log that the ship had become lodged on a sandbar. They were forced to remain through a stormy night until high tide came the next morning and freed them.

For our last rumor this week, let’s talk about Columbia Avenue. As you will hear on tours and through casual conversation, many people believe that Columbia was the ‘original Beach Avenue.’ It wasn’t.

The original Beach Avenue was exactly where it is today, though it was known as Beach Drive back then. The road originated out of necessity in the 1700s and was officially designated as a thoroughfare in the

1870s. This rumor comes from the fact that in early Cape May, the area east of Ocean Street (which ended at Washington Street) was a swampy marsh. At the time Columbia Avenue was built, there was nothing south of it but swamps and beach.

Beach Drive was extended east of Ocean

Street in the 1880s and connected with Sewell’s Point, which is now the Coast Guard base.

At first he can be a timid and shy around new people, but once he knows you he comes out of his shell. Aside from giving kisses, one of his favorite pasttimes at the shelter is going outside to run and play. He enjoys his toys and always drops them for you. SAMMI had a loving home, but finds herself at the Shelter when her owner couldn’t keep her. A declawed, mature female, she is all grey with just a little kiss of white on her chest. She is shy right now, she enjoy being petted, rewarding your you with a quiet purr. She’ll lose that shyness when she finds a new home. Adoption fee is $20.

WILLY is a 75-pound, two-and-ahalf-year-old black lab who came to the shelter two weeks ago as a stray.

He quickly showed the staff that he is fun and loveable as he passed his temperment test with flying colors. He is a great family dog, and the only problem that you might have to worry about is Willy jumping up for a hug. He is currently being treated for heartworms, but the shelter is happy to take care of this problem even after he has been adopted into a loving home. Come meet Willy today. Adoption fee is $95.

CASPER is mostly white, with half of his tail dipped in black, and two black spots on his hocks. Casper is a friendly guy who loves to sit on your lap and be petted.

Once in a while, he’ll reward you with several little licks on your hand or arm. His white fur perfectly offsets his gleaming golden eyes and pink nose. Adoption fee is $70.

BISCUIT is a handsome, five-yearold lab mix. He’s playful, friendly, lovable and just can’t get enough affection from everyone. He is also very well trained and knows commands such as sit, down, and drop it. This well behaved, active guy did very well on his temperment test, never giving the handler a problem. Another thing that Biscuit loves to do is to hop in the pool for a nice, relaxing dip. If you’re looking for a great family dog who enjoys an active lifestyle, stop on by and check him out. You’ll be pleased that you did!

PATCH is just a love of a guy. White with gray patches, he’s as friendly as can be, and loves to sit in your lap for a good petting or brushing .... he’s so mellow, he’ll even let you clip his nails with no complaints.

Activity Of The Week

A

MERICA has been honoring its fallen soldiers since 1868, when Decoration Day was set aside to honor the northern soldiers who died in the American Civil War. (Southern soldiers were memorialized on other dates.) After World War I, May 30 was declared Memorial Day to honor all of America’s war dead, from all conflicts. In 1971, Memorial Day was moved to the last Monday in May, to create a three-day weekend. Since then, it has been considered the unofficial start of summer.

For Cape May, it IS the start of the season – you need your beach badges. The MidAtlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities sponsors a craft show. Historic Cold Spring Village holds an open house. It’s easy to concentrate on that aspect of the day. Even

soldiers are eager to enjoy time with their families; to toss a frisbee, fly a kite and grill a hamburger. Yet, with more than a thousand American dead in the conflict in Afghanistan and more than four thousand dead in Iraq, it is important to reflect on the meaning of the holiday.

“Somber memorials have their place,” according to John Golden, who served 16 years with the United States Navy. “It’s a sign of respect. Parades are nice, and it’s especially

important to show the senior veterans – from World War II, Korea and Vietnam – that we haven’t forgotten.”

There are a number of ways to mark Memorial Day in Cape May. The city plans a Memorial Day service at 11am Monday at the Columbia Avenue monument. At noon, on Gurney Street at the beach, the US Coast Guard auxiliary will honor all who served with a wreath ceremony on the ocean. (This ceremony is particularly moving.)

If you’re staying in, check out the PBS Memorial Day concert, held on Sunday night before Memorial Day every year. Fly your flag at half staff from dawn until noon on Memorial Day. Wear your American flag pin, dress the kids in red, white and blue, and sing patriotic songs. Shake hands with a member of the armed services and say, “Thank you.” At 3pm on Monday, join in a moment of silence.

Friends and family members of those who died in service to our country remember their lost loved ones every day. This Memorial Day, show them that we remember, too.

The Movie Column

“Iron Man 2” and “Adopt A Sailor” are reviewed by Andrew Henry and Tom Sims

W

ITH the release of Iron Man 2, crowds of moviegoers anticipating this year’s summer blockbusters started heading toward theaters. And obviously Hollywood Henry was there with a bucket of popcorn in hand. The film finds our hero Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, letting his ego run amok as the world worships him.

Unlike other superhero films, there is no secret identity factor; everyone knows Tony Stark is Iron Man. The public may love him, but the government is eager to get their hands on the technology Stark has developed. Throw into the mix a rival businessman trying to best Stark at his own game, as well as the son of a former Stark employee trying to avenge his father’s death, and Iron Man is kept very busy.

Robert Downey Jr leads the film as Stark, and the role seems tailor-made to his style. His portrayal is sharp, sarcastic, and has a playful quality that permeates through the entire film.

Gwyneth Paltrow also returns as Pepper Potts, Stark’s budding love interest and eventual business partner. Out of the new additions to the

cast (which include Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johannson), my favorite player was Sam Rockwell. He portrays Justin Hammer, the rival businessman who may be on the same level financially as Stark, but certainly not as smooth (as shown through a hilarious bumbling presentation of his work).

Overall, the film is very well done. Maybe a half-step below the first one, which I would attribute to the first film’s surprises and introductions to this clever world the creative team has built. But if Iron Man 2 is our introduction to

the summer films of 2010, we should be in for some quality entertainment.

Adopt A Sailor review by Sundance Sims: This film (not “movie”— inside joke to those who saw it) played to an enthused crowd last week at Cape May Stage. It stars Bebe Neuwirth (of Cheers and Fraser fame), noted TV and film actor Peter Coyote, and relative newcomer Ethan Peck (grandson of Gregory Peck).

Nuewirth and Coyote play a sophisticated Manhattan couple who sign up for the Adopt A Sailor program, whereby they host Peck for an evening.

Charles Evered (who also wrote the play Class, currently at Cape May Stage) delivers wonderful dialogue. And the cast delivers as well (Peck has that great baritone voice he no doubt inherited from his grandfather). Look for this film wherever you get your flick fix!

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover

I

An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz

’M PLAYING hooky this week to attend the launch party of Cool Cape May, the color issue of Exit Zero, and the second edition of The First Resort at the Exit Zero Store. This is my first official Exit Zero event and I’m quite excited to meet everyone (I started to liken Jack Wright to the elusive Wizard of Oz). This also happens to time up perfectly with the sidewalk sale in Washington Mall, so my one-night trip will be jam-packed with eventful fun (and retail therapy).

I’m looking forward to checking out the new Exit Zero merchandise, and I’m secretly hoping that there are eco-friendly shopping bags because they’ve become a recent passion of mine. They’re cheap, sturdy, and functional (plus you’re supposedly helping the environment so win-win). Also, the Exit Zero yoga pants are ultra-comfy (I hope they still have some in stock) and I’m anxiously looking forward to seeing the fun gift baskets from the businesses in town. I’m a sucker for a gift basket.

Initially I thought I wouldn’t be able

to attend, because one of my beloved chihuahuas, Pie, was very sick with congestive heart failure. We adopted Pie three years ago from Bergen County Animal Shelter and although he was only 4lbs, he was full of sass and vinegar. He only liked me, and would barely tolerate anyone else tending to him.

On Friday I arrived home to find that Pie had passed away. His story is a true example of how important it is to adopt from shelters and rescue groups. Pie was a definite challenge, and he did not always have a pleas-

ant demeanor. He had become that way due to mistreatment and neglect by humans.

I am comforted by the knowledge that he was provided with love and attention at the end of his life and that he experienced the real way animals should be treated. If you haven’t already, please visit the Cape May County Animal Shelter and consider adopting a pet that needs extra special attention and who may not be the most popular choice (like Buttercup, who can be found at www. petfinder.com/petdetail/15117086).

I am also already planning a trip back in June (with my dad!) which will be the second trip with both of my parents I’ve had in a long time. My father has heard rumors of the “best crab cakes EVER” at the Mad Batter (from my mother) and is very eager to test her theory. Also, last time he visited, Dairy Queen of Cape May was not open and I have made the assertion that they are the best Dairy Queen I have ever had (we’re a family of absolutes).

F YOU are like most of those fortunate to live upon the shores of Cape May, you get a lot of attention from friends and relatives, some you even forgot you had, every summer.

People who love you, even though you may not even like them, and who love your humble abode so conveniently located within steps of the Atlantic Ocean (even if it is a few blocks).

You know who you are and you know what I’m talking about!

Sure, you love having them – well, most of them. Okay, maybe some of them. But after three or four days of baking on the beach, or wishing they had three or four days on the beach, it starts to wear a little thin. Either too sunburned for the beach, or crazed with cabin fever because they can’t get a decent day on the beach. You’re getting tired of the sand they’re dragging in whether it’s dry or wet. They’re getting tired of doing the same thing, day after day.

You start looking for alternatives, something to engage them and get them out of

your hair – and your home.

How about a bird walk? How many seaside hotspots are sitting right on top of one of the planet’s greatest bird-watching junctions?

I can think of one other than here, but it’s a long way from Cape May. Try it. You, and they, might be sur-

Doesn’t take a whole lot; don’t even need binoculars if you join one of the birding walks organized by the Cape May Bird Observatory – they’ve got free loaner binoculars available at every walk. They might enjoy finding out that there is a difference in the “seagulls” on the beach – Laughing Gulls, Herring Gulls, Ring-billed Gulls. They might enjoy being able to identify some of the birds on the walks. But they don’t have to know a darn thing about birds. No there is no minimum or maximum age requirement; birding is an equal opportunity enticement. Nobody is ever too old or too young to appreciate birds.
