The Police Blotter
Every week we feature quirky police reports from small towns across America. TRACY, CA: A woman said her roommate punched her in the lip because she was angry and couldn’t find her cat. The caller from Driftwood Apartments, 800 W. Grant Line Road, said the hit made her lip swell, but she refused medical attention. – Tracy Press
Learn Russian With Tanya
YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act. We at Exit Zero warmly embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and to this end offer a weekly lesson to help you communicate with your Russian-speaking friends. Please note – the “Russian” we are printing is the phonetic interpretation to make for easier reading. Do you pick berries in Russia? Vy sobiraete griby v Rossii? And, here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Dah. Me takzhyeh sobirayem volshebnyeh gribi. Which translates to: Yes. And we also pick magic mushrooms. – Tanya Zotava
Weird Word Of The Week
Rhinotillexomania The act of extracting dried mucus and/or foreign bodies from the nasal passage – aka nose picking.
A Picture From The Past
Don Pocher
THE Hotel Cape May was demolished in 1996, but it lives on in history books due to its legacy of both pain and pleasure. This postcard from the hotel’s period as an Army General Hospital during World War I, a position it also assumed in World War II, demonstrates a painful aspect of its past. Guest rooms were turned into medical offices, examining rooms and operating rooms. The grand dining rooms and part of the lobby were transformed into hospital wards. – Ben Miller
Facebook Mystery Contest
KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, taken by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know what service is housed in this building, you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
EARLY American colonists made grey paint by boiling blueberries in milk. And in other compelling berry news... the blue paint used to paint woodwork in Shaker houses was made from sage blossoms, indigo and blueberry skins, mixed in milk.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J I’m watching you... J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a bowl of hot and sour soup and a red dragon roll. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
HAVE created a checklist – the title is “How to Totally Screw Up Cape May’s Promenade and Make it Look Like A Tacky Eyesore.” First of all, instal white vinyl fencing wherever possible so that it will not only crack and split once subjected to wear and tear, but will also represent an affront to the beautiful Victorian architecture that made the town famous. CHECK! Next, introduce a new plastic bench in bright blue and tan colors which contrasts hideously with the classic concrete-and-wood benches and then make sure you mix them up for maximum visual confusion. CHECK! Wait, I’m not done. New horrors await us on the promenade. You know those beautiful metal lamps the city installed a few months ago at the western (Cove) end of the promenade? You know what I’m talking about – the ones that somehow slipped past the city’s bad taste committee and got installed against all the odds. Well, each of those beautiful gun metal lamps now have a pair of plastic orange-and-white traffic cones attached to their base. And if you’re assuming that this is some ugly-but-temporary fix, it would seem you’re wrong. One of my moles (I have an army of them) tells me that the lamp posts were installed wrongly – instead of the electric connections coming up underneath and through the bases, they were installed alongside the posts. Which is, obviously, kinda, you know, dumb. Apparently, people were tripping over them, so the city’s Public Works department installed the traffic cones over the connections and used zip ties to secure them to the new lamp posts. I’ve been told that the cones will be remaining there until the end of the year, when the city plans to do something in the off-season. I
STRYKER, it said. And that was that. This was the same day that Roy Halladay threw a perfect game for the Phillies, and it would seem that there’s some kind of nuance going on – Stryker sounds like strike, and Halladay threw quite a few of those on Saturday, while Keaton begins with a K, which signifies a strike in baseball. Yup, Keaton Stryker Black is gonna be an All-Star Phillies second basemen. BEST of luck to Bryan Brodowski, a nice guy who is opening Cape May’s newest restaurant, Latitudes, at the harborfront spot once occupied by Copper Fish (which is now on Broadway and Sunset, occupied previously by the Moonfish Grill – I know, it’s hard to keep up). Bryan is an industry veteran who seems to know exactly what he’s doing and I’m looking forward to his new venture. Staying on the subject of restaurants, it seems there is no end to the number of people who ask us what happened to Stumpo’s and Tisha’s. I’ve mentioned it before in this column but will repeat it – Stumpo’s is no more and its spot on the mall has been taken by Tisha’s, who should be opening in a week or so. I am always inspired by the fact that commercial space in Cape May never lies empty for too often, despite the usually high (ridiculously high) rents that are being asked. The stores vacated by Bath Time and Bamboo Shack Boutique, across from Swain’s, have already been filled by women’s clothing outlets, in only a matter of weeks. I guess there’s no stopping the American entrepreneurial spirit. I wish you all the very best of luck. Until next week, make some plans for a glorious summer and check out the fabulous new Exit Zero color issue, which is packed with ideas on what do do. It’s on sale in local stores.
³ couldn’t confirm this with the city as I went to press because I’m writing this on Memorial Day and City Hall was obviously closed, but I will let you have their feedback in the next issue. If this is true, then I think we can assume that Public Works won’t be winning the Department of the Year award, given the debacle over the city’s horribly-conceived parking meters system. PS: Did you notice those little light piers at the harbor are now illuminated? Just in case you were hoping people would miss them in the dark, now the city is making sure everyone sees those tacky little things in all their glory. CONGRATULATIONS to Jason Black, our Advertising Manager, whose beautiful wife Colleen gave birth on Saturday to their third (and c’mon, folks, last?) child, the wondrously-named Keaton Stryker Black. Why Keaton? Not really sure. Why Stryker? Well, Jason had put off the task of naming the child until the last minute, believing that he would be struck by inspiration when the time was right. And sure enough, as he sat in the delivery room he looked down at the brand name on the hospital bed at Cape Regional Medical Center –

Downhome cooking and a really friendly, laidback vibe in this gem of a place, just a few minutes from Cape May. New owners Jim Linnington and Ed Niemann deliver creative comfort foods and a lot of overall improvements. This Villas spot favorite attracts people from all over. Why? The food is reliably good and very affordable. “The local café with the wholesome aroma” is what they call it... and that’s how we describe it. Very apt! A chic interior and stylish food, but the ambience is anything but pretentious. Modern American cuisine. A little taste of the tropics at this restaurant, which is located at the Atlas Inn on Beach Avenue. Congress Hall’s restaurant is better than ever, serving classic tavern food with a twist or two along the way. Congress Hall’s chic basement nightclub has an assortment of great music on the weekends and a cool vibe.

A Night On The Town
Bars, restaurants, culture and events... Dan Mathers’ weekly guide to what’s going on in Cape May
W
HILE waiting for Cape May Stage’s production of Class to begin I got a phone call. I ignored it and instead sent a text saying, “In the theatre. Show starts soon. Is it important?” I received the response, “Not important, but I hope you’re seeing Sex in the City 2.” I say this to illustrate a point: my generation are not theatre-goers. I say “I’m in the theatre,” and the assumption is that I am at the movies. This might explain the mindset I find myself in whenever attending a play: I am so used to the total immersion and separation feature films offer that I often have difficulty distancing myself from live actors. I have trouble accepting the illusion that the people on stage before me are not Heather Matarazzo and Thaao Penghlis, but rather Sarah and Elliot. I believe that the true mark of a good film is not one that has great actors, special effects and an excellent storyline. Sure, these can all be components, but the true test is if you are able to sit back and appreciate the production
as a whole, rather than critiquing individual aspects. In my experience with live theatre – which has been limited – I’ve slowly been learning to appreciate this distinct difference between the mediums. Last year’s Cape May Stage productions of Proof and Master Harold… and the Boys were excellent places to begin: a handful of characters, elaborate sets and clear-cut, emotional themes. Class, on the other hand, has only two
characters, a set composed of a door, a window, a desk and a brick wall, and a highly-ambiguous theme. After the show, Artistic Director Roy Steinberg asked me, “What did you think?” I paused for a moment, tried to organize my thoughts and responded, “I’m not sure yet. I know that I enjoyed it, but I’m not yet sure what to make of it.” Not that that’s a bad thing. I feel unfulfilled when I predict the ending of a movie or if I leave the theatre entirely sure of everything I just saw – there’s no intellectual stimulation involved. I never managed to completely separate myself from the people on stage. Instead I critiqued their every line, questioned each motive and wondered, “What’s the point?” I tried to relate the characters to real people and attempted to discern a meaning. In the end, I’m still not entirely sure. Mostly, I left the theatre debating the nature of relationships. So maybe THAT was the point they were trying to get across. Oh, and for the record: I have no intention of seeing Sex in the City 2.

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover
I
An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz
HAD a rare midweek treat as I broke free of my circus-like atmosphere at work and boarded the Honda Accord bound for the launch party at the (new) Exit Zero Store and Gallery. If you haven’t already, be sure to visit the new digs as soon as possible! This is for the locals, too, because the new store boasts not only the coolest EZ-wear and Cool Cape May 2010 edition, but you can now enjoy a onestop shopping experience. The Exit Zero Store, comfortably located with free (!) parking at 109 Sunset Boulevard (last shop in the row), now offers items from local shops in town – yummy soaps from A Place on Earth, great gifts from Whale’s Tale, not to mention the opportunity to customize a cover of Exit Zero for yourself or a loved one. Visit the store to learn more about this unique opportunity, as it is an excellent idea for Father’s Day, graduation, or an anniversary celebration. The store is simply classy, cool and chic – a definite must-see. I loved my one-night stay because I had the opportunity to eat breakfast at George’s
Place (corner of Beach and Perry), a pleasant, no-frills beachfront eatery, smartly decorated with striking black-and-white photos of the owner, John Karapanagiotis, and his sons. We arrived exactly at the moment the door opened, and within minutes (no joke), the entire restaurant was filled. This was a Friday morning, and most of the patrons appeared to be locals. I chose to go the healthy route and ordered the brown sugar-encrusted flaxseed oatmeal topped with fresh blueberries,
which literally will make you fall deeply in love with oatmeal in a way I never knew was possible. It arrived in a suitably-sized bowl with the massive single blueberry pancake we ordered as a “side” treat. This is a definite must-do! Arrive early if you do not like to wait for a table and bring cash (no credit/ debit). The lunch and dinner menus appear absolutely scrumptious and I strongly fancied at least four to five items on each menu. The pitfall of the trip was not being able to catch Class at Cape May Stage, starring Heather Matarazzo and Thaao Penghlis. I have loved Heather Matarazzo for a long time, including when she played Ryan Philippe’s sister in 54. I also happen to be a huge Days of Our Lives fan, and immensely enjoyed watching Thaao as Tony DiMera (I would tape the episodes for the whole week and then watch them in succession on a Friday night, in an attempt to create the feeling of an early DVR experience). Cape May never disappoints – it always inspires me and leaves me craving more! “At the Beach” 715 Beach Avenue, Cape May (609) 884-1233 www.zoescapemay.com

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
HAVE always been partial to a beret, ever since I was a gay blade in pre-war France and realized the ladies love a man in a trendy hat. I had experimented with a few different styles of headgear previously: the bowler, the topper, the titfer, the Panama and for a short while a tri-corn with a feather. While all had a certain style, and increased my reputation for being stylish and standing out in a crowd, none was quite right, I felt. Then one night I was out with the usual crowd – Picasso, Monet, D’Artagnion and the others, and tiny Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec joined us, and instantly heads turned. That is no small feat (if you forgive the pun) for a man that small: Lautrec stood three feet tall and that was in block heels. Normally he was trampled underfoot, but this evening he was center of a growing hush, and the good sort of hush, not the sort that makes a gent realize his flies are unzipped and he forgot to wear underwear. The difference from Lautrec’s usual attire? His beret, which was perched at a
jaunty angle (though one had to be crouching down to be sure of that: anyone over six feet tall tended just to see the top of the hat). All evening, the wee man was center of a crowd of admiring ladies and gents, and every one was hanging upon his minuscule words. I instantly decided that I, too, needed a beret if I was to be taken seriously, and when the little gent retired to the bathroom, I slipped away and followed him, and when no one was looking I struck him a blow to his
temple and made off with the hat. Since that day I have worn the beret religiously, for at least a portion of the day, and luck, fortune and fame have followed. Even as I dictate this to my faithful manservant Kitchener, I am sitting naked in a bath of champagne, wearing only my beret. As soon as I have finished dictating, I will be joined by a trio of oiled… hold on, I see a disturbance outside the window. It seems to be the portly Scotch proprietor of this rag, shouting something indistinct about berries. No matter: he will be in his cups again and ranting. I will have Kitchener disable him with a karate chop to his neck as usual when he shows up uninvited, and continue with my evening as planned, a smile on my lips and my beret upon my head. Editor’s Note: Mr D’Catur was given his usual weekly assignment – to write a column based on this week’s special issue, which is “berries”, not berets. We regret the confusion, which was caused by both his age and declining mental faculties, as well as his curmudgeonly, stubborn nature.

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My 19-year-old unmarried niece is pregnant. My sister is planning a baby shower for her daughter, and I just can’t help but feel that it’s not appropriate to celebrate a young woman’s indiscretion. Am I out of line? – Auntie Em Dear Em The Answer Lady would be the last person to say that we are not entitled to our feelings, my dear. However, since you asked a direct question, the Answer Lady will give you a direct answer: yes, you are way out of line. No one is celebrating a young woman’s indiscretion by throwing a baby shower. My goodness, if we had to attend a party every time a young woman was ‘indiscreet,’ as you so quaintly put it, we would barely have time to work, eat and sleep. The purpose of this baby shower is to celebrate the arrival of a precious
child, a new member of your family. It is not a place for judgment and disapproval. It is a place for punch, finger sandwiches and cake, and much oohing and ahhing over ridiculously adorable baby apparel. (This last bit can be a bit wearing, depending upon the volume of gifts, but when it comes to sandwiches and cake, the Answer Lady is all over it.) Your niece has made a brave decision, and she has a difficult road ahead of her. She needs people around her who will support and assist
her on this road, not people who are disdainful of her. If you cannot put aside your distaste for her ‘indiscretion,’ then by all means buy her a card, pop in a gift certificate to Happy Baby, and excuse yourself from the festivities. Dear Answer Lady I was walking down the mall the other day when I ran into someone I used to work with and haven’t seen in over a year. Imagine my surprise when she told me she just had a baby! I’d like to buy her a little something, but since we’re not close friends, I don’t want to go overboard. Any suggestions? – Small Gesture Dear Gesture How sweet of you to want to acknowledge your acquaintance’s bundle of joy! The Answer Lady suggests you get to the Exit Zero Store immediately. Head directly to the Cape Mayniac section, where you will find a onesie for the wee one in just the right color. It’s what all the fashion-forward Cool Cape May babies are wearing. And they’re only $15. (PS: And don’t forget your friend – arriving soon, Cape Mayniac tote bags, the perfect solution for stowing all that baby gear.)

Chances are good that you won’t get past the front door without trying a piece of something delicious!
It’s the smallest shop on the mall, but it’s packed with beautiful things – Rolex watches, pearls, sapphires, porcelain vases, cut-glass and pocket watches to name a few.
There are more spices, oils, sauces, mustards, herbs, fresh coffees and salad dressing than you can shake a spoon at (they have those too!).

Their $1 frozen custard cones are back so go get that!

A Killer Read
A chilling and compelling new short story by Terry O’Brien (aka Cape May’s Stephen King) Chapter 3: Love on the Rocks

USTINE Smith was young, and pretty for a journalist; young and pretty for anyone, really. At 30, with a sharply attractive face framed by shoulderlength brown hair, all of which sat atop a trim runner’s body, she was a good catch. However, a young and pretty female journalist under 40 was an entirely different animal. To the ink-stained-wretch crowd she may as well have been 1987-era Cindy Crawford. While Justine wasn’t supermodel pretty, she still had the goods. She spent as much time fending off the clumsy advances of her awkward co-workers at Jersey Shore Monthly as she did writing about the Jersey Shore itself (which anyone with more than six working brain cells agreed was nothing like the Jersey Shore that MTV portrayed; that Jersey Shore bore as much resemblance to the actual Jersey Shore as Glenn Beck did to Keith Olbermann). And besides her job at JSM, Justine was a reasonably successful blogger and self-pub-

A Killer Read ? From Page 75 lished author. Her “Shore Thing with Justine” blog and accompanying Shore Points: Everything You Need to Know about New Jersey from Exit 36 to Exit 0 book were climbing, ever so slowly, both the sales and blogosphere charts. Slowly. Painfully so. But climb they did. Public awareness of her was growing, undoubtedly. In the last two years she’d appeared on all three Philadelphia morning news shows as “Jersey Shore Expert Justine Smith” and dispensed knowledge on topics ranging from the best restaurants south of the Walt Whitman (Cucina Rosa on the Washington Street Mall in Cape May) to the best roller coaster (the Sea Serpent on Morey’s Pier in Wildwood) to the best McDonald’s (North Cape May, probably the best McDonald’s in any county in any state in any country anywhere on any planet). She had also recently begun a weekly segment on the local NBC affiliate, NBC 40 out of Atlantic City, which was basically a visual representation of her book and blog – best beaches, night clubs, karaoke bars. The segment, “Shore Things with Justine” (apparently, there was an infinite number of ways to use “Shore” as a title pun) was still in its infancy at six weeks, and clearly visible to anyone watching that she was fighting a losing battle against the show’s wardrobe designer, who appeared to have raided Phylicia Rashad’s closet in 1989. Justine, most comfortable in age-appropriate skirts and blouses, even more comfortable in jeans and supremely comfortable in running gear, most often appeared on TV in ill-fitting, outdated pant suits that would have made Hillary Clinton cringe. Her hair was power-sprayed into a close approximation of the lead actress in any Whitesnake-era music video. Shoulder pads, crunchy bangs, pleats – nothing was out of bounds. When reviewing tapes she
Page 77
Her real ambition was to become a muckraking political go-getter, which is why she found herself here, in Cape May Point, peering through the darkness at the Concrete Ship on Sunset Beach as the clock neared midnight... at first found the show nearly unwatchable, but once past the surface awfulness she found she was actually doing some quality work. And the show, like her book and blog, was slowly gaining viewers. In six weeks her clout had grown such that she was able to convince her producer (“convince” meaning “let him land a paw on her thigh that was not immediately de-coupled from its wrist, therefore promising the possibility of further thighfeeling”) to ditch the wardrobe department altogether and let her dress and make herself up at home. Not quite Jessica Savitchlevel free reign, but progress was where you found it. The TV spot was fine and all, but her real ambition, her true heart’s desire since first seeing Redford and Hoffman in All the President’s Men in her high school social studies class, was to become a muckraking political go-getter of the WoodwardBernstein variety, which is why she found herself here, in Cape May Point, peering through the darkness at the Concrete Ship on Sunset Beach as the clock neared midnight. What began five weeks earlier as a wink-wink-nudgenudge series of cryptic, anonymous posts on her “Shore Thing” blog slowly became a dozen or so exchanged emails, culminating in this – a secret meeting in the dead of night in a quiet part of town. It was not Watergate. But even Woodard and Bernstein had to start somewhere, right?

A Killer Read ? From Page 77 The tipster was a bolt from the blue for Justine, who was working hard on her next book but was struggling to make it compelling. Sure, a detailed history of Jersey shore diners from Atlantic City to Cape May and every town in between would be interesting to her and, perhaps, her mother. But no one outside of that very small demographic would want to read, let alone pay for the right to read, her so-far dry accounts of old train cars and WWII-era laundromats being converted into greasy spoon eateries. Of this, Justine was well aware. She was also well aware of a slew of other books coming out by South Jersey-based writers covering politics, sports, beach dredging (if possible, an even worse topic than diners), the underground gay community and several other topics which, had she thought of them first, she would now be investigating. But as it was, a book about diners, although it would make an interesting coffee table book that no one would read, needed an angle, and the anonymous tipster offered a doozy – a Da Vinci Code-like conspiracy amongst the New Jersey Mafia, the Catholic Church and the Sicilian Cosa Nostra that led to almost complete control of the NJ diner syndicate by the Greeks. Justine found it all a little hard to swallow, but the tipster had offered some tantalizing bits of proof in their email exchanges – names, dates and enough shady-looking Google search results to bait the hook. And Justine bit. She knew that doing so may have been a sign of desperation and lack of faith in her book, and maybe of something a little more deep seated. But she also knew that if this desperate act did not pan out she would reconsider writing the book, even though that meant paying back the advance she had already received. And spent. Whatever. All she could do at the moment was keep plowing
Page 79
ahead and try to finish the damn thing. And do it as best as she knew how, which meant getting this information from the tipster and, if necessary, using her feminine wiles to do so. She hoped the informant was single and lonely. Then she shuddered and felt a little dirty. Nevertheless, she unlooped her hair from its pony tail and let it spill over her shoulders, shaking it out seductively. From her purse she heard the faint buzzing of her cellphone alarm – midnight. “Where is he?” she whispered to herself. She was pretty sure he was a he. There was nothing in the blog posts or emails that belied any femininity and the voice on the phone seemed masculine enough, although they did wonders with voice-changers nowadays. What was once the parlance of spy novels and scary movies was now available with your everyday, garden variety Transformers Happy Meal. She wondered if this is what Eisenhower meant by “military industrial complex.” She took a deep, salt-tinged breath and went through her checklist – sexy short-shorts? Check. Tight tank top? Check. Mace? Check. Running shoes? Double-check. She wanted the information to write the best book she could, and she would cross certain lines to do so, but she was also prepared to turn tail and run at the drop of a hat should things turn weird. She’d recently completed her first Philadelphia marathon, finishing in the women’s top 50%, and it was only 2.7 miles to the well-lit center of Cape May from where she stood, so she was sure she could outrun any pasty internet-dweller who might try to cop more than a feel. A feel she could deal with – more than that and the guy better have pictures of the Pope shaking hands with Michael Corleone. Or something more Greek. She’d left her car in the lot

A Killer Read ? From Page 79 behind the Sunset Beach Gift Shop (which was one of the biggest sellers of her Shore Points book – she made a note to stop by in the morning and drop off another dozen copies) and was prepared to sprint for her life if necessary, although the idea seemed preposterous. So she stood and waited. The minutes ticked by. At 10 after she began to feel foolish. What kind of journalist sets up a secret midnight meeting with an anonymous blog poster an hour from her home? At quarter after, she moved from the spot under the single streetlight in the parking lot that skimmed the beach, and over to the bleached wood veranda outside the Sunset Beach Grille, and took a seat in the little gazebo. She drew a Benson and Hedges Light 100 from her bag and lit it, glancing furtively as she did so. The skullduggery was a bit silly given the hour and desolate surroundings, but as a runner and blogger she was a militant non-smoker, except for the two to 20 times per day she really needed one. She lit the long smoke, dropped the Phillies lighter back in her bag, and fished out her cell, flipped through the phone book to the Es and clicked on the name she wanted. The line rang in her ear and she stared down
In three minutes she would be dead. The “man” on the jetty had been a ruse, a hat and coat slung over the “Keep off the Jetty” sign. at the glowing red nub of the cigarette. As she did so, she saw him. Or her. She saw IT, out on the jetty – tall and thin in a raincoat or some kind of long jacket. She glanced at her watch – 12:20am. From somewhere nearby she thought she heard music. Behind her? Then it was gone. Of course, it made perfect sense that the tipster would show up before her, scout out a superior vantage point, make sure Justine had come alone as promised. Feeling like a fraud because of the cigarette and like an idiot for not spying her observer earlier, she rose and walked onto the beach toward the jetty. In three minutes she would be dead. Dead and stripped of her notes. The “man” on the jetty had been a ruse, a hat and coat slung over the “Keep off the Jetty” sign which now, laying as she did atop the cold, wet rocks, struck her as ironic. Or sinister. She’d need time to figure which. She didn’t have that. Her notes. How stupid could she be? Only now, with the killer poised over her back, knife pressed into the base of her skull, did it make
sense why he would ask her to bring them. It seemed odd at the time – now not so much. She figured out quickly, as the first flash of the knife blade glinted in the moonlight before settling between her ribs and slicing through a lung, who her killer was. What she didn’t understand was the why. As he fished through her bag and pockets, finding her precious notes, she suddenly knew that as well. Of course, she tried to reason with her killer. Did the “I promise I’ll never tell, just take what you want” routine, to no avail. When the end came it was a bit of a relief, just as her killer had promised. Once the knife went yay deep she felt nothing, which made her feel better. He didn’t finish her, but left her there to bleed out. Her face cold on the stone (she could still feel her face), she watched him walk away and thought that she would wear just about any awful pants suit in existence if she could live long enough to film another “Shore Thing” segment on where to view rutting horseshoe crabs. She then grew very sad at her lost career prospects and, more importantly, her hundreds-bordering-on-thousands of readers who would miss her future work. A tear ran down her cheek and she closed her eyes. She would never open them again.

On the bright side, in the days and weeks following her death, as the grisly details of her slaying spread across the internet and publishing world, Sunset Beach Gifts was going to sell a lot more than 12 copies of Shore Points. She had joined an exclusive, yet growing, list of slaughtered journalists the killer had recenty notched on his belt... Hank Schlister, of the Cape May County Herald, forced into a wood chipper 13 days prior at the home of Dave Benoit, owner/ operator of Benoit’s Tree Service & Landscaping Co. His book, Deadly Shores: The Secret, Awful Truth About Dredging, would go unpublished. Bits of his bone and hair still slick the Benoit family’s garage floor. He was 51. Brian Crandall, of Cape May Magazine, bludgeoned to death with a Don Clendenon ash baseball bat 10 days prior. His book, New Jersey Sports Heroes: Six Profiles, would go unpublished. His body was found quartered at first, second, third and home on the Cape May Little League field on Lafayette Street. He was 33. Ray Stein, of Cape May Stage Monthly, poisoned with hemlock nine days prior. His book, Cape Gay: The Not-So-Secret Secret of America’s Outest Shore Town, would go unpublished. His death, at first ruled a suicide, would later be called murder when, along with the hemlock in his flask, coroners found a knife in his back. It was all very Shakesperean. He was 48. Barry Chisholm, of The Shoppe, drowned in his own hot tub seven days prior. His book, Never Order Bisque on Tuesday: The Dirty Underworld of the Cape May Restaurant Scene, although highly anticipated, would go unpublished. His death, first ruled accidental, was reclassified as suicide when copious amounts of liquor and Ambien were found in his stomach, and later reclassified as homicide when bruising in his trachea made it clear he was forced to consume the depres-
sants. He was 33. Lauren Cotton, of the Lower Township Gazette, mangled to death by a taffy-pulling machine four days prior. Her book, A Little Over: The Dirty Secret Fudge Retailers DON’T Want You To Know, would go unpublished. Her death, first ruled accidental, was reclassified as homicide when security tapes showed she was pushed into the machine by a dark figure in a long coat. The killer, aware of the placement of the cameras, kept his face hidden from view. She was 47. Christian North, of the Cape May Ocean & Globe, pulverized with a shovel on the Gurney Street jetty two days earlier. His book, Cape May Political Corruption: A Tradition of Excellence, would also go unpublished as most of his brain now lay at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, some 30 yards off the shoreline, and was now home to a lovely family of Sand Crabs. He was 55. Justine Smith, of South Jersey Monthly magazine, gashed to pieces on the Sunset Beach jetty in Cape May Point. Her book, working title Dirty Dining: The Mafia’s Connection to the Vatican and the Great New Jersey Diner Syndicate, would go unpublished due to a sudden case of 17 knife wounds. She was 30. In her last living moments, Justine had felt so very alone. And while in the physical sense she was, in the spiritual sense she needn’t have worried. She joined six other local journalists, all with books pending, in the ever after, all dead by the same hand. Although the killer was getting less inventive with each strike, Cape May police were certain it was a serial job. A serial rush job. Seven victims aged 30 to 55. A serial killer in Cape May, only four years after the infamous Karaoke Killer blazed a trail through town during the hectic summer of 2006. The Karaoke Killer, however, had never been caught, and Cape May police were determined not to let this one, the one they’d started calling The Editor, get away.

BUTTERCUP is a two-year-old pit bull mix waiting patiently for someone to rescue her. She’s been here at the shelter for a while and when people come in they comment on how pretty and sweet she is. When Buttercup first meets someone she can be a little shy, but once she warms up she does take comfort from human contact. She can be a little handshy and loud noises make her jumpy. Please stop in and meet her today. Adoption fee is $95.

CHAMP is a handsome eight-monthold puppy who likes to be picked up for hugs, and having his belly rubbed – he will let you do it for as long as you like. Cape Curiosity
A weekly historical column by Ben Miller, author of the best-selling “The First Resort”
R
OUNDING out my series of Cape May myth-buster columns, I have three more common stories heard around these parts. First, let’s talk about the Hotel Lafayette, which was replaced by the Marquis de Lafayette. One story that’s often told says the Marquis was built to replace the original hotel after it was damaged by fire in the mid-1960s. The Marquis’s official website authenticates the tale, but is it true? In a word, no. A May 1968 article in the Trenton Evening Times confirms this with their note, “Up the street is the ornate Lafayette Hotel, built in 1884. Its high ceilings in the lobby delight visitors, and it is furnished with white wicker furniture.” In fact, the original Lafayette Hotel was demolished to make way for a newer, more modern building in the Marquis, which leads to the second myth about the hotel. I recently took a trolley tour with the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities, and the guide mentioned that
This late 1960s photo shows the Hotel Lafayette with the motor inn (on the right) that replaced the Weightman Cottages in 1962 Greater Cape May Historical Society
Reverend Carl McIntire offered to move the Lafayette Hotel once the demolition plans were made public. According to the guide, the city denied the permit for fear that the large hotel would cave in the street. The truth is… yes, McIntire did offer to
move it and yes, the city denied the request. McIntire had previously paid to move both buildings that now make up the Angel of the Sea, along with the Evening Star and

Cape Curiosity ? From Page 97 Morning Star. In the process of relocating the Morning Star, the weight of the building caused the truck to break through the pavement, where eroding sand had left an abscess under Beach Avenue. “If it hadn’t been for the steel grid of carriage beams the whole thing would have come apart like a house of cards,” according to Harry Bellangy of the Greater Cape May Historical Society. It took two days for the movers to jack the building back up and continue moving it down to its current location next to the Peter Shields Inn. Residents may remember the bizarre sight of the four-story Morning Star sitting in the middle of Beach Avenue near Madison. Moving on to our last myth, have you heard about the houses in West Cape May that are actually the second and third floors of former South Cape May homes that were damaged by flooding? People hear this on tours and ask me about it all the time. I think it intrigues them to think of someone removing the upper levels of a house and relocating them elsewhere as a new house. I can’t begin to tell you how workers preserved the second and third floors as they

Activity Of The Week
I
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Historic Cold Spring Village.
F YOU need a break from Cape May’s Victoriana, steep yourself in the Age of Homespun, the period from 1790 to 1840 recreated at Historic Cold Spring Village. This living history museum, located three miles north of Cape May, recreates daily life, not big events, and provides a memorable history lesson. Restored homes have been collected in a village, complete with sheep grazing in the center and cotton among the crops on the outskirts. Actors in period costume go about their work, explaining their tasks as they go. The potter creates beautiful, useful jugs and plates. The ink-stained printer composes his pages upside down and backwards – and gives out free bookmarks. The carpenter carves tiny toys and puzzle pieces as well as tools, and the handyman in the family can compare them to their modern counterparts. The basket maker’s capable hands never stop moving. The heat and noise that radiate from the blacksmith’s stall foreshadow the industrial world to come. In the farm kitchen, children learn that
their work is essential to the household. They get a chance to practice carding or spinning wool with a drop spinner. None of the work is easy, and a child may lose patience before her turn is up, but she will gain an understanding of daily life in the pre-industrial age. If you are lucky enough to be there when the beehive oven is going, you’ll see the challenge of turning the farm’s bounty into food. When treats emerge, it’s clear how much went into them. The school house is another
great stop, precisely because it is NOT that kid-friendly, and kids may appreciate modern teaching methods and the absence of corporal punishment. Stop at the tavern to see what traveling was like in 1800 – check out the prices and the corn cob checkers. Maybe you’ll catch an itinerant preacher giving a sermon. Near the tavern, HCSV offers evidence that even play was a challenge. Rolling a hoop down the lane is not as easy as it looks, and tossing and catching rings on sticks takes some getting used to. For a few dollars, try some arts and crafts – we’ve tried painting, corn cob dolls, and marbled paper over the years. Or, dress up in period clothes and pose in the stocks for memorable snapshots. Treat yourself to candy sticks and ice cream, or unique souvenirs from the museum shop. We usually visit HCSV several times a summer – it’s a great activity on a drizzly day – and there is too much to do in one visit. It’s open on weekends until late June, and then Tuesdays through Sundays until Labor Day. Next Week: Go Fly A Kite

“The Secret in Their Eyes” reviewed by Tom Sims
T MIGHT be having a limited theatrical run, but it is absolutely worth the search to see The Secret in Their Eyes. Set in Argentina, the story begins with a former criminal court employee (played by Ricardo Darín) planning to write a novel about a rape and murder case from the 1970s on which he worked. He tells a former colleague, now judge, (Soledad Villamil), whom he has always secretly liked. Flashbacks tell the story at a time when Argentina was under the control of a military junta and justice in the courts was not common. A woman is found raped and murdered while her husband is at work, and two immigrant workers are forced into confessing to the crime. Darin’s character works with his colleague, a functioning drunkard named Pablo Sandoval (Guillermo Francella), who provides much of the comic relief that is essential to the storytelling. The film has twists and turns that leave you guessing. It has some flaws to be sure, but they do not detract from the overall masterful storytelling and wonderful acting from

ing? There are several films coming out this season, but which ones will be a worthwhile excursion to the theater? It seems to be the year of the sequel (or trilogy or more!). I know I speak for my colleague Hollywood Henry when I say that we are both anxiously anticipating the release of Toy Story 3 (in just days). It’s been more than 10 years since Toy Story 2, one of my favorite films. A new generation will have a fresh experience with Karate Kid (preliminary reviews indicate that actor Jarden Smith will impress audiences). On the indie front, there is Nowhere Boy, a narrative film about the life of young John Lennon, and a documentary on Joan Rivers (which you will see or not based on how you feel about Joan Rivers, right?). Lastly, we urge you to sign up your young filmmaker (ages 12-17) while there is still space available. Campers conceptualize, write, shoot, edit, and (most thrilling) screen their film to a live audience. The first camp is June 28-July 2. Call 609-884-6700 or visit www.capemayfilm.org to get details.

Exploring Art At Cape May Stage
R
ADVERTISING FEATURE
ONALD Rand’s internationally acclaimed play, Let It Be Art, is part of the Second Stage program coming to Cape May Stage on June 7. Ronald Rand portrays Harold Clurman, the great critic, director and acting teacher. The play was chosen because of the thematic link to Charles Evered’s play, Class, that is currently on stage. Directed by Roy Steinberg, Class stars Heather Matarazzo and Thaao Penghlis and is the story of an acting student seeking instruction from a master acting teacher and how both learn lessons far beyond acting. Clurman was concerned with elevating theatre to an art – he examined the difference between the poetic and prosaic in theatre. Artists and philosophers have pondered the meaning of art for centuries. Balzac said, “What is art? Nature concentrated” while Beethoven mused “Art? Who comprehends her? With whom can one consult concerning this great goddess?” Modern playwrights like Brecht have exclaimed, “Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it.” Philosophers have had widely differing thoughts about art starting with Aristotle, who wrote, “All art is concerned with coming into being....” through Goethe who famously intoned “Art is long, life is short, judgment difficult, opportunity tran-

sient...” and finally Malraux who penned, “All art is a revolt against man’s fate.” Audiences in Cape May are invited to come up with their own opinions after viewing Let It Be Art on June 7. Like the character of Elliot in Class, Ronald Rand is a master acting teacher and will be leading a workshop called “The Art of Transformation” on June 8. The workshop costs $35 for adults and $25 for students with a special $5 saving for those who see the show and take the workshop. All of these tickets are available at capemaystage.com. There are only two weeks left to see the world premiere of Class with Heather Matarazzo (from Welcome to the Dollhouse and The Women on Broadway) and Thaao Penghlis (the Emmy nominated actor from Days of Our Lives, and Mission Impossible). Come see what the whole town is talking about!

Bird Droppings
A
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
ND suddenly... it’s over. Spring, I mean. Migration, I mean – even more. Birders wait, and wait, and wait, all winter long for the big surge of northbound birds. They gurgle and gush when the trickle starts. Get totally jazzed when the northbound exodus reaches the “one new species every day” threshold. Go crazy in May when the great cresting wave that is spring washes over Cape May... And then, it’s gone. Poof. The flood has come and gone. But not quite. Actually, spring migration continues on into June... even July. The first week in June is like a curtain call for spring. The woodlands of Cape May can be dead one day, brimming with song the next. Well, bird song anyway. Many of the late arrivals are females (who don’t sing) or second year males who are just feeling their oats, and garbed in plumage that is somewhere between the breeding plumage of adult birds and the juvenile plumage they left town
wearing, some nine months earlier. Their songs are nothing to brag about, either. But among the ranks of these Jill and Johnny-come-latelies, you’ll find more than a few Magnolia Warblers and American Redstarts. Mourning Warbler is a notoriously late migrant and early June is far from late for this
uncommon migrant. Shorebirds, too, are still migrating into June. The beaches of Delaware Bay may still host a number of Semi-palmated Sandpipers, up to two weeks into the month. There is even one sandpiper whose numbers sometimes peak in June. This is the White-rumped Sandpiper. It breeds in the high arctic; about as far north as you can go before you hit glacier. It winters in southern South America. About as far south as you can go before you run out of continent. In fact, one White-rumped Sandpiper did overshoot. It ended up in Antarctica (where it apparently starved). I believe it is the only record of a shorebird in this southernmost continent. But all through June, birds are moving. Not in massed flocks. But moving. You can go days, even weeks, and not have a Blue Grosbeak, or Indigo Bunting, or Yellow-breasted Chat, or Willow Flycatcher in the South Cape May Meadows and then,

Bird Droppings ? From Page 125 wham!, one morning there is a bird on territory. Where did it come from? Somewhere else, and there is no reason to believe it was someplace close. Non-breeding shorebirds continue to trickle north. Their internal clock says “Go!” Their age-thinned hormones say, “What’s the hurry?” They get to New Jersey in mid- to late June... even early July. Then the internal clock says, “Time.” Any reason for going farther north ends there. The birds just forage around wherever they happen to be waiting for their internal mechanism to reset the clock for fall. The latest spring migration I’ve ever seen? July 5, 1979 (give or take a year). I had a flock of Broad-winged Hawks over Cape May – all second year birds and all in heavy molt. I can’t swear that the birds were still heading north. But it’s my best guess. Imagine the last spring migrants still heading north two weeks after the first southbound migrants start their exodus south. Yep. Come late June and early July you’ll find birds coming and going. Keeps birders doing much the same thing. No matter what time of year it may be there are always birds to see in Cape May. Just head over
to the Cape May Bird Observatory - THE place for anything to do with nature - and pick up the summer schedule of daily walks. The CMBO (609-884-2736) is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point and is open 9:30am to 4:30pm every day. If you have any questions at all, ask any of our staff or volunteers – they are always glad to help with anything you need, even things you didn’t know you needed yet. While there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, the latest in books, bird feeders, and some great new and fun merchandise – including our exclusive CMBO logo jewelry, clothing, totes, and more. Take a look at the sightings log or our website to check what’s being seen, scan the bookshelves, pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, or just browse around. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit us online www.BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Vice President of Natural History for New Jersey Audubon Society. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the Cape May Bird Observatory), he has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
