The Police Blotter

Every week we feature quirky police reports from small towns across America. ANDERSON, SC: A man was arrested for driving while intoxicated at the wheel of a float during the annual Christmas parade. According to witnesses, the man sped down Main Street in the Steppin’ Out Dance Studio float with 19 people aboard, ran a red light and led police on a three-mile chase. – Canton Rep

Learn Russian With Tanya

YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act. We at Exit Zero warmly embrace our Commie Cousins and offer a weekly lesson to help you communicate with your Russian-speaking friends. Please note – the “Russian” we are printing is the phonetic interpretation. How do you think Russia will do in the World Cup? Kak vuy dumaetyeh Rossia vustupit na chempionatyeh mira po futbolu? And, here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Vu, amerikansu, nichego nye znaetyeh o futbole. Rossia ne uchastvuyet vuh chempionatyeh mira. Which translates to: You Americans know nothing about soccer. Russia didn’t even qualify for the World Cup. – Tanya Zotava

A Picture From The Past

THE Light of Asia stood in the Borough of South Cape May, now known as Cove Beach. It was built by James Bradley in 1884 to promote South Cape May real estate. The wooden elephant stood nearly 41 feet tall and housed concessions in the front legs and a spiral staircase in the back that led to a store inside the belly. A large platform provided panoramic views for a small fee. Unlike her famous sister Lucy, The Light of Asia was torn town in 1900 and sold for firewood – Ben Miller

Random Fact Of The Week

THE Jules Rimet, the trophy awarded to the winners of the soccer World Cup, was stolen in 1966 in England but was found soon after wrapped in newspaper at the bottom of a garden. In 1983 it was stolen in Brazil and has never been recovered.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Each day , compel yourself to do something you would rather not do. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a bowl of hot and sour soup and a red dragon roll. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

IRST, some good news about parking in Cape May. I manned a booth at the West Cape May Strawberry Festival (with some wonderful, beautiful help) for the first time ever on Saturday and was delighted to see that the Cape May Police Department adopted an entirely different set of tactics from last year. The officers made sure that Park Boulevard was decorated with traffic cones and politely advised drivers that they couldn't park there, which is a HUGE step up from last year's festival debacles, when they would allow unknowing motorists to park there and then swoop on them like vultures. So, that's great progress. Seriously. The bad news is that in other parts of the city police officers continue to swarm around parking meters. A very respected local businessman emailed me Monday night to say this, “Parking tickets just gets worse. It’s going to kill us. I passed five officers writing tickets on Carpenter’s Lane and Lyle Lane.” I asked my friend if he really meant FIVE officers in such a little radius and he replied, “Two on Carpenter’s Lane, passed by another in a police car, two on Lyle Lane.Overkill.” Too damn right it’s overkill. It’s one thing upholding the municipal laws by ensuring that motorists are punished for overstaying their welcome, but it’s quite another to dispatch officers in little hit squads with the specific purpose of targeting drivers. And as I have said before recently (and will no doubt say so again), the motorists are operating with one of the most confusing meter systems I have ever seen. And I am not alone – you can’t walk through the streets of this town in the summer season without overhearing, or noticing, people who can’t work it out. This NEEDS to

be a top priority for the recalibrated city council, which is about to receive three new members. The current system can’t be allowed to continue. It makes the city administration look like either money-grabbing cynics, or clowns. Or maybe a bit of both. In other city news, director of Public Works Bob Smith was miffed at last week’s column, which lambasted the installation of those lovely new lamps on the promenade, each of which are now decorated with a pair of traffic cones at the lamp bases. I was informed, by a really good source, that the cones are there because the lights were installed correctly. But Bob spoke last week to my colleague Dan Mathers and explained that there was no mistake. “The contractor installed the lights properly, but during installation it was brought to our attention that it would be good to put in a conduit. What the cones are covering is the unfinished conduit that is coming up at the base of the light posts. When the conduit is finished, the cones will be removed,” said Bob. Okay, but the lights were installed in the winter, nearly six months ago. I’m wondering why the conduits were not finished by now. Unfortunately, it was too late on Monday after-

noon when we tried to put that follow-up question to Bob. (Stay tuned.) Bob was also unimpressed by my criticism of the new blue benches on the promenade, which have been mixed and matched with the existing stone/wood ones – an effect that is not at all pleasing to the eye. Bob told Dan that the new benches are paid for by the public and installed in memory of loved ones. “They pay almost $1200 for these benches and they get to pick where they want to put the benches because they might want them in special places to memorialize the person they bought the bench for. “For years there has been blue along the beach there. The Steger tents are blue.” Dan replied, “Wouldn’t you say that’s a very different color of blue?” “That’s like the Eskimos have different colors of white to describe the snow. I’m not going to get into the differences in the color blue.” Bob said he selected the benches from a catalogue. He submitted the catalogue to the city council. In a public meeting the city council voted to approved these benches. “If you went to the public meetings you would know this,” he said. Ouch! Yes, we knew that the benches were installed in memory of relatives and friends, but I don’t think it is either advisable or practical (what if two different people wanted the same spot?) to organize the promenade in this fashion. The fact that the director of Public Works gets to choose designs in the first place shows how broken the system is. No offence, Bob, but this kind of thing is best left to people with knowledge of good public design. Until next week, enjoy the warm weather, and wear dark glasses on the promenade.

Downhome cooking and a really friendly, laidback vibe in this gem of a place, just a few minutes from Cape May. New owners Jim Linnington and Ed Niemann deliver creative comfort foods and a lot of overall improvements. This Villas spot favorite attracts people from all over. Why? The food is reliably good and very affordable. “The local café with the wholesome aroma” is what they call it... and that’s how we describe it. Very apt! A chic interior and stylish food, but the ambience is anything but pretentious. Modern American cuisine. A little taste of the tropics at this restaurant, which is located at the Atlas Inn on Beach Avenue. Congress Hall’s restaurant is better than ever, serving classic tavern food with a twist or two along the way. Congress Hall’s chic basement nightclub has an assortment of great music on the weekends and a cool vibe.

A Night On The Town

Bars, restaurants, culture and events... Dan Mathers’ weekly guide to what’s going on in Cape May

I

GUESS I shouldn’t have been surprised when I was carded at The Merion Inn as I tried to place an order. After all, I was the youngest person in the bar by about 20 years. But then again, I’ve been to most of the bars enough times that even if the bartenders don’t know me by name, they should recognize my face. Being the baby at the bar isn’t all that unusual an occurrence for me, but rarely do I find the other patrons at the bar busting my chops, as they did at the Merion. “Aren’t you a little young to be in here?” was the riff. Fortunately, Megan Magill, Lisa Gavin and Elaine Widerstrom showed up for dinner and collectively lowered the average age of the bar by about 10 years. I was alone at the bar on a Saturday night because: A. My girlfriend was working; and B. I had to interview George Mesterhazy for the August color issue of Exit Zero. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to wait a month and a half to read the full story (and it’s a good one). What I CAN tell you is that George is a VERY interesting and entertaining man. But any-

one who has been to The Merion Inn while George is playing already knows that. The Merion Inn is the place to go if you want to impress your date but aren’t willing to fork over half your paycheck to do so. I’m not calling The Merion Inn cheap, but I am calling it reasonable. Granted, I put myself on a minor diet, so I only had a bowl of soup and a salad, but my bill was still cheap considering I was sitting at the bar for the better

part of three hours. At the start of those three hours I ordered a glass of pinot grigio and was handed a mini milk jug and a glass. According to bartender Cody Smith, this milk jug technique is to ensure that everyone receives an equal pour. “It’s 250ml,” he said, “That’s a third of a bottle of wine. When you’re pouring a glass of wine there is no sure way to get it the same every time. This solves that problem.” Keep in mind that if you’re pouring four-ounce glasses of wine, you’re going to get about six glasses out of every bottle. So, each mini milk jug was nearly two glasses of wine… all for “about nine dollars,” as Cody put it. According to my receipt, I spent about $24 on wine. Couple this with the fact that George Mesterhazy and I were doing shots of Patron during the course of our interview and you’ll get a picture of how I was feeling as I left the bar to meet my girlfriend when she got off work. “You’re drunk already?” she said. “I was working,” I responded.

Y BAR mate on this spectacular Thursday evening was not my husband Andy; it was my mother, Barbara. The weather was warm enough without the humidity lingering on your skin. The sun filtered through the tree-lined street, as I turned onto Jackson with mom in tow. The occasion was the Mad Batter’s happy hour (daily from 4:00-6:00, in case you were wondering). Some visitors remarked that the temperature was Augustlike, although I think they were exaggerating a little. It was perfect – an ideal ending to an eventful day. Now, I could relax from my shop-hopping and unwind in the casual, cool atmosphere of a restaurant that feels as comfortable as home to me. Never knowing what type of crowd to expect, we entered the Mad Batter and saw that the bar chairs had already begun to fill. It was a Thursday night in May, not attached to Memorial Day weekend, so I was pleased to see a healthy turn-out. Sadly, Bob was not in sight, as Thursday is his designated day off

(please mark your calendars accordingly). However, Joanne was there with her pleasant, smiling face and greeted us warmly, remarking how it had been a while since she’d seen us. It HAS been a while. We sit on our usual side, pretend that we need a moment to consider the options, and then smiled in agreement as Joanne suggests the strawberry cosmopolitan. Absolutely! I’ve waited four months for this moment. The Mad Batter is one of my favorite places to meet people. Over the years, I’ve

met fantastic and curious characters, and I am never disappointed. These experiences always ensure that the memories will be preserved, because we will recant our trips based on whom we meet. Tonight was no different, having met Joe and Cathy McGarrigle. Cathy was sipping a regular cosmopolitan and took particular interest in my strawberry concoction. She had never heard of it and I confessed that neither had I until recently, but that basically it is liquid bliss. She vowed to try it. Joe and Cathy, who live in Cape May, were great to chat with. Joe, perhaps influenced by his cocktail, insisted that I resembled Nicole Kidman (God bless him). Eating our awardwinning crab cakes and chatting with them made for the perfect ending to a fabulous day. Joe and Cathy celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on this Flag Day, June 14. Happy Anniversary, Joe and Cathy! Joe – here’s looking at you, kid! Happy hour at the Mad Batter... great atmosphere, great bartenders, great drinks, and sublime company – all can be found in my favorite town.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

REMEMBER the first-ever World Cup like it was yesterday. Of course, back then we called it the New World Cup, and the rules were a touch different from today’s gentrified spectacle. I invented the game one long, dull Sunday, when we were all sitting around feeling a touch depressed at the realization that we had unintentionally wiped out the last Indian thereabouts, and had eaten the last buffalo (those two events were linked, of course, but I will not dwell on them: the memories are too painful). So, I did a head count and we numbered 220, all strapping young lads and lassies, all needing to cheer ourselves up with some strenuous physical activity and good, honest sweat. Afterwards, we rather fancied some sport, and so, as quick as lightning, I invented soccer. There were some false starts, I admit: my first choice of ball was a stray cannonball, and the first chap to kick it moved it only half an inch, at the cost of five broken toes. How we laughed. Then we

instead swiftly slew, cooked and ate a pig, so as to make its skin into a sphere. I then divided the crowd into two, and decided one set of goals would be the 100-foothigh whales’ jaws at the edge of Coldwater Spring (caught by yours truly, though I am not proud of that incident, either), the other would be the feet of The Collossus of Cape May, standing a ship’s width apart across the harbor (sadly, long gone, sunk beneath the waves when an earthquake shook the

city to punish us for Wildwood’s sins). What fun we had: we chased, kicked, pummelled and improvised all afternoon, until the score passed something like 329782, and tempers frayed. All through the night, fisticuffs, duels and random musketplay broke out around Cape May, and by morning, the survivors – 11 on each team – had lost the ball. We all agreed it had been damn good fun, and that we must play again, and agreed on a date of a century and a half from that day. Hold on: that would be 2010. Well I never: I must get Kitchener, my faithful serving man, to start calling around those long-lived descendants of the original match, and prepare for another bout. I think this time I will cut to the chase, and have him dust off the Sherman tank in the basement, paint it in Cape May colors and sally forth with a load of grapeshot ammunition… ah, no wonder the call it The Beautiful Game.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady One of my favorite things to do with my best friend is to dine out. But it’s embarrassing the way she orders! If you’ve seen When Harry Met Sally, it’s like that. Dressings must always be on the side, bacon has to be extra, extra welldone, pickles on a separate plate, eggs soft, but not too soft, mayonnaise on one side of the bread but not both – on and on! We had breakfast the other day at Bella Vida and it took her five minutes to order. I wanted to crawl under the table! – Sally’s Best Friend Dear S.B.F. Have you tried looking at the server and saying, “We’re rehearsing a comedy scene for our upcoming Broadway production”? Or, better yet, creating a pre-printed business card you can leave under your plate or pass to the waitress on the way out that reads, “I’m

sorry my dining companion is a P.I.T.A.”? The Answer Lady jests, of course, but humor CAN diffuse most situations. Your best bet may be to start chatting with Sally before the server’s arrival, or even on your way to the restaurant, i.e. – “I’m having The Big Kahuna, what do you feel like?” When the server comes over, you say “I’ll have The Big Kahuna and she’ll have The Chunky Monkey.” Then you can launch into the hottest bit of gossip imaginable (making something up if neces-

Please call for new Promotions!

sary), thereby distracting her and keeping her menu modifications to a minimum. Dear Answer Lady I was enjoying my lunch and a good book at The Depot Market Café the other day when an acquaintance arrived with guests. After we exchanged greetings, they insisted that I join them. I really was enjoying my solitude, so I politely declined. I’m just wondering now if that was a social faux-pas. – Table for One Dear Table No, good etiquette does not dictate that we disrupt our own peaceful outing to sit with other people who happen to be dining in the same place simply because we are acquainted with them. While it was nice (and socially correct) of them to offer, politely declining is also perfectly acceptable. And by politely declining, the Answer Lady doesn’t mean we laugh out loud and say, “Hell, no!” It means we say something like, “Oh, this book is such a page-turner, and I’m halfway through my sandwich. Please enjoy your guests and I’ll catch up with you some other time.”

The Exit Zero Guide To Cape May Shopping

Stitch by Stitch is headquarters for Cape May and Victorian cross stitch and needle work designs. No matter whether you are a novice or an expert, you will find project ideas and supplies to please you.

SOMA is an original art gallery in Cape May that features new art from up-and-coming artsist from the region.

It’s an exciting, fairly new women’s store brought to you sisters Jen and Julie, who also run the Victorious store.

Patricia is a self-taught artist who paints beautiful, realistic oils and watercolors that you’ll see on large posters, smaller prints and on postcards all over town.

Owner Pat Jackson has been designing jewelry since the 1970s and has had her shop since the 1980s. You won’t find anything synthetic or treated – just satisfaction.

Everywhere you look there are lovely surprises – a tea set from the 1920s, a cylinder from a turn-of-the-century Edison phonograph or a Wallce Nutting hand-colored photograph.

Chances are good that you won’t get past the front door without trying a piece of something delicious!

It’s the smallest shop on the mall, but it’s packed with beautiful things – Rolex watches, pearls, sapphires, porcelain vases, cut-glass and pocket watches to name a few.

There are more spices, oils, sauces, mustards, herbs, fresh coffees and salad dressing than you can shake a spoon at (they have those too!).

Tell Me A Little About What They Sell Here

Stitch by Stitch has a full service framing department where they can carefully block and mount your finished project.

Local Inn Keeper Harriett Sosson’s new show Reinventing the Romans is currently on display at SOMA.

You’ll find classy tops, dresses, denim, bottoms, linens, jewelery, handbags and shoes.

Patricia has painted some of the most inspiring buildings in historic Cape May and plenty of stunning, natural landscapes, too.

Pat Jackson takes a twist on the seashell souvenir with items like an 18k gold scallop-shell bracelet or a sterling silver conch-shell pendant.

You never know what you’re going to find here, so even if you don’t find something that tickles your fancy on your first visit, make sure to stop back again.

Their $1 frozen custard cones are back so go get that!

Mary Ann’s sells stunning estate and new jewelry featuring a large selection of traditional and fancy colored diamonds.

Among the gadgets available at Love The Cook are Hot Spots, silicone pads that act as trivets, hot pads and jar openers as well as providing the perfect surface for mixing bowls and cutting boards.

A Killer Read

A chilling and compelling new short story by Terry O’Brien (aka Cape May’s Stephen King) Chapter 4: Exit Zero Hero

M

« If you missed previous chapters of A Killer Read you can catch up online at www.exitzero.us.

Y NAME is Travis Whitaker. I’m a private investigator in Cape May, NJ, and I’m not very good with surprises; not a good trait in a PI as surprises are my stock-in-trade; financial, karmic, what have you, but here we are. Actually, one surprise is okay, it’s two I have trouble with. The first wasn’t so bad, bad being relative to the giver or receiver of the surprise – seven south Jersey-based writers had been killed in the last two weeks and their publishing house wanted my help. While there was one writer I wouldn’t mind taking to the woodshed given his treatment of me following the Bed & Breakfast case last summer (which he had oh-so-cleverly dubbed “Dead & Breakfast”), it was my deeply-held belief that killing a writer only served to vindicate their feeling that the world was out to get them. The last thing you want to do is vindicate a writer.

A Killer Read ? From Page 77 No, the real surprise came from the call that came two minutes after that one. The one from Cathy Steltzer, a name I hadn’t thought of in about 15 years, after high school, when she made it clear that she and I would never be more than friends. This despite years, and I mean years, of best friendship combined with a handful of make-out sessions after bad break-ups with other people. The break-ups were always hers. I would have made out with her after all of my bad break-ups, but I had had exactly one. In seventh grade. Jenny Horner. She was a little trailertrashy but in seventh grade if a girl was willing to hold your hand and say you were “going out” she could have looked like Ernest Borgnine. Plus, I would rather have chewed on tin foil than kissed a girl in seventh grade. I know that makes me sound prudish what with seventh graders today crafting their own cell phone pornos, but that’s not something I like to think about. The point is, had I known then that my adolescent, one-way relationship with Cathy would mirror most of my “grown-up” relationships, well… I don’t know what I would have done, but at least I’d have been more aware of the fact that I was everyone’s favorite rebound. There were worse things to be, I guess. Man. Cathy Steltzer. “What’s doing, Bwana?” Tim DeMarco asked me. Tim DeMarco was my business partner and closest thing to a best friend. There was nothing to say so I just shook my head. “Gotcha,” he said. Tim was a world-class ballbreaker, but he also knew when to leave it alone. A rare gift. We were on our way to the Exit Zero Store & Global Headquarters in West Cape May. Until last summer I was only vaguely aware of Exit Zero magazine and the culture surrounding it. I became a much keener reader after their editor-in-chief,

Page 79

While all the rest of the local, regional, and even some national media were busy heaping praise upon me, Lonegan was, what’s the term, taking the piss, implying that breaking the case of my life was more a product of luck than skill. a transplanted Scot called Donal Lonegan, took a few potshots at me following Dead & Breakfast. While all the rest of the local, regional, and even some national media were busy heaping praise upon me, Lonegan was, what’s the term, taking the piss, implying that breaking the case of my life was more a product of luck than any inherent skill. It pissed me off... because he was right. And it pissed me off that it pissed me off so much. “Okay then,” Tim said after more nothing. He was annoyed, but so was I, dammit. Too much information trying to cram itself into my tiny little brain – multiple homicides, ex-flames, the itch in my scalp. It was all too much. “Take a right here,” Tim said so I did. We were on Sunset just past the 7-11, a 10-minute ride from my Queen Street office, five in the offseason. We pulled into Chattel House Village, which was actually a row of four stores. My car, a cherry 1976 El Camino, kicked up a nice dust cloud in the gravel lot as we swung into a spot. The stores were all pleasant looking. From left to right they were the Bird House of Cape May (yellow with green trim), the Butterfly Tea Room (orange with blue), next to it was the Home Fashion & Fun (pink with mauve), then Exit Zero Global HQ, all aqua and blue. It was an aesthetically pleasing, if not quite masculine, color palette. I wasn’t sure if the

A Killer Read ? From Page 79 shop owners were gay but the guy who painted them clearly was. I mean… mauve? But no, that’s mean. It’s Exit Zero I’m upset with, not the gays. I like them fine. I was even a metrosexual myself for a half a summer when Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and jeans with striped button-downs and expensive leather bowling shoes were all the rage. This phase ended abruptly one evening at the Ugly Mug when the girl I’d been doing quite well with allowed me to walk her home, only to confess at her door that, “I love you guys. You’re nice, polite, and I never have to worry about getting jumped.” Somewhere there is a patron of the Cape May Salvation Army walking around with a dozen $75 polos. Still, I do miss Paige Davis and Trading Spaces. The years do slip by, don’t they? I lit up a cigarette and glanced around. I’ve made a habit of this. Ever since that one chance lookback where I happened to see the rubbery slice of jalapeno that broke Dead and Breakfast, I tried to make a visual inventory of my surroundings. I knew it was impossible to memorize everything I saw, but you never know what might stick in your subconscious and get dredged up later in a moment of duress. Or boredom. Wasn’t much to see here, though; a couple dozen parking spots, a few tons of gravel. I walked onto the deck that ran the length of the storefronts, sucked away the last half-inch of the smoke and tossed it into the lot. “Nice,” Tim said, hooking a thumb towards the butt tower six inches to my right. I shrugged. “Biodegradable.” Then in we went. The door beeped annoyingly as we entered, but that was the only annoying thing about the shop. The white walls were adorned with a dozen different types of shirt, tee and sweat. Framed photos filled the gaps, most from bygone eras, sepia-toned and lovely. The

Page 81

dozen vibrant paintings were by a local fellow named Trotti, whose milieu was photorealism. I don’t know – looked an awful lot like tracing to me, but what do I know? We wandered in, got the lay of the land, then a voice called from above. “B’right with you,” it said in a hard Scottish burr. The ceiling vaulted almost straight up, and 20 feet in from the front façade was the open second floor, presumably the “Global HQ” from the noise of tapping keyboards that drifted down. Tim and I shrugged at each other and continued poking around. The main selling floor was laid out in a big U, divided by a wall featuring Trotti’s art. Graphic line drawings and oldtimey cameras and typewriters were also on display. Appropriate. On the far right wall were several large antique bookcases adorned with many books of many varieties; art collections by various locals, a couple of poetry selections, and something called The Butcher of the Point by Jack Henry Owens, which purported to be a true story involving the author, Dr. Jekyll and Jack the Ripper. Sounded far-fetched and convoluted to me, but the author had an impressive array of Jersey Shore exposes to his credit. But the two books most prominently featured were a disparate pair – one was a gargantuan coffee table book called Garden State of Eden by Sam Howard, an apparently-thorough history of Cape May, which is widely known as the country’s first seaside resort, according to the back cover blurb. The other was a slim fiction anthology called Cape Fear, NJ, with pulpy titles like “Death by Innocence” and “Blood Key”, by someone called David McComsey. Both books claimed to be the best of their genre ever published. This was probably not true. The Scottish voice called out again, “One moment, please.” Tim and I shrugged again.

HOPE is here with her sister Faith and they’re both waiting for a new home. She’s confident and knows some basic commands such as sit and come and will learn more. She will give you as many kisses as possible and enjoys being picked up and held. It would be best if she could be adopted with her sister because they’re so bonded. If you think you might be interested in two small dogs, please stop by and meet Hope and Faith.

«

FAITH, unlike her confident sister, isa more on the timid side but still friendly and definitely seeks attention, especially when it comes to being pet. It would be best if faith could be adopted with her sister because of their strong bond. They really need each other and are hopeful that a kind soul will keep them together. If you think you might be interested in two small dogs, please stop by and meet Hope and Faith. We’re sure you’ll be happy you did!

«

TUXIE is a very sweet, lovable boy who is waiting for the perfect family to adopt him. He’s active, playful and really enjoys his toys – especially tennis balls. He loves to run and chase after them all day long. When he is playing with his toys he can get a little over enthused, but otherwise he is great. He’s just having fun! He didn’t show any signs of food aggression and did very well during the physical test. What he needs now is an active home.

BARRY is a free spirit. He’s energetic and loves to explore, but would do best in a home with no other pets or small children, as he tends be somewhat opposed to competing for your attention. If you’re looking for a fellow who will be playful and independent but also loves a good snuggle, come and see Barry. Adoption fee is $70.

«

DORA is quite the explorer. She loves to try to sneak out of her cage when you’re caring for her to wander around the room. She was surrendered when her previous owner couldn’t keep her. So, if you’re looking for a petite, yellow and white female who’s used to living with people, then Dora could be perfect for you. Adoption fee is $35.

Cape Curiosity

I

A weekly historical column by Ben Miller, author of the best-selling “The First Resort”

HAD originally planned on writing only three ‘mythbuster’ columns about Cape May, but after receiving numerous questions during my walks around town last weekend, I decided to pen one more. Before I start, let me thank everyone again for the great feedback and kind words. I appreciate it! Our first myth this week is about a familiar red-and-white landmark on Beach Avenue, the Sea Mist. This cottage is the source of three specific rumors. One says that the house was recently renovated, another that it is an inn or B&B and the third rumor states that the structure on top is a widow’s walk that was used by the wives of fisherman lost at sea. These three stories are widespread and popularly believed around town, but are they true? In short – no, no and no. First and foremost, the house was NOT renovated. It was completely demolished and rebuilt to a similar design as the original. There was a point during the construction in 2007 when nothing was visible from Beach Avenue except one solitary beam of wood.

The new Sea Mist is shown during construction around September 2007 Ben Miller

The Sea Mist was an inn at one time, but those days are over and with the reconstruction came a design that split the building into luxury condominiums. An elevator has been added, allowing people easy access to the penthouse condo, which was priced at $2.3 million.

Now, let’s talk about the widow’s walk. While some homes in Cape May did feature widow’s walks, the Sea Mist was not (and still is not) one of them. The structure on top of the original building was a gazebo, or open-air

Cape Curiosity ? From Page 97 cupola. It was added by previous owner, Fred Morrison, who transformed the building from a standard two-story Victorian into the grand Sea Mist in the 1960s. Morrison passed away in 1999, but the popular story among those who knew him is that many of the additions, including the redand-white paint, were meant to irritate the city. There had been some bad blood between him and certain officials, so he exercised his rights and in the process created one of the most photographed buildings in the city. Next, I’d like to address the question of that red buoy on the promenade, touted as the southernmost point of New Jersey and the adjoining plaque that reads, “CAPTAIN CORNELIUS JACOBSEN MEY, DUTCH EXPLORER WHO FOUNDED CAPE MAY IN 1621.” People tell me that they don’t believe the buoy is the southernmost point because it appears that the 2nd Avenue end of the promenade is further south. Well, they’re right. Beach Avenue neither runs parallel to a line of latitude, nor continues straight to the western terminus. All one needs to do to prove this point is consult a GPS device

This buoy was meant to mark the southernmost point in NJ, but is it misplaced? Ben Miller

or review satellite imagery. The area around the Sunset Pavilion is the southernmost point in NJ, not counting the beaches. The plaque next to the buoy is very nice and I appreciate the kindness of Carin Feddermann, who donated it. Unfortunately, the script is also incorrect. Captain Mey was not the first person to chart the land and he

Robert Panaccio, VMD Robert Moffatt, VMD Patricia Link, DVM

didn’t found Cape May. He never even set foot on the island. Henry Hudson was the first to document the land in 1609 and it was founded by Dutch settlers in 1629, with the first recorded land transfer taking place in May of 1630. If you have any questions about these or other stories you have hear about Cape May, please feel free to email me at ben@exitzero.us.

Activity Of The Week

D

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Let’s go fly a kite

URING the Victorian era, scientists used kites for serious research. Douglas Archibald used box kites to measure temperature, humidity, and wind speed. Marconi used kites to carry his antenna high enough to send radio signals across the Atlantic. Alexander Graham Bell and the Wright brothers used them to study lift and drag. Photographers used kites to take aerial photos for mapmakers. And, while all this work was going on, children discovered how much fun they are. With tuppence for paper and stings You can have your own set of wings With your feet on the ground You’re a bird in flight With your fist holding tight To the string of your kite. Like the uptight Mr. Banks from Mary Poppins, you’ll soon find yourself laughing as you strain to control your kite. I’m not sure how much “tuppence” is, but the raw materials for kite building – string, lightweight paper, and balsa wood – are pretty cheap. (Basic pre-made

kites are also affordable.) The 25th Annual Wildwood Kite Festival, held on Memorial Day weekend, provided plenty of inspiration for budding kite makers. This year, there were butterflies and caterpillars, stacked triangles and long tubes, mermaids and flying fish. Many of them seemed bigger than a minivan, and together, they crowded the sky. The sight sent us home to start creating, but you can also find inspiration from individual kite fliers on any beach day. Kites are a great project for kids, although

Allison, a 10-year-old girl who flies her homemade Phillies kite on Philadelphia Beach, advises getting extra materials for the grownups who are “helping” you. “Start with a basic diamond kite,” she says. “You can find the directions online. Get extra paper – you can reuse the wood over and over.” And apparently you can’t get too upset when the kite gets beat up – it’s part of the fun, and you can patch or remake it. (Consider making two, because someone is going to come along who wants to try your kite, and it may be a little while before you get it back.) “Diamonds are a good shape for light winds,” says Allison. You need a box kite for higher winds, and those are harder to make. And fly your kite away from roads and other people – you don’t want your kite landing on a car or smacking someone in the head. Like Mr. Banks, you may find yourself singing as you fly your kite, but don’t be shy – on the beach, no one can hear you sing. Skip out on work, pick up your kids, and go fly a kite. Next week: Beach Games

The Movie Column

I

“Shrek Forever After” reviewed by Tom Sims

HAD a chance to see Shrek Forever After at the Tribeca Film Festival where it had its premiere more than a month ago. I read the synopsis and thought, “Forget it.” The first Shrek was excellent – albeit especially for the kids. The soundtrack from the first film still ranks among my favorites ( you might even say it’s one of those films where I actually liked the soundtrack more). The second Shrek was so bad in my estimation that I barely even considered seeing the third. So when the fourth came out, I was already not compelled to see it. When I heard the premise is lifted from It’s a Wonderful Life, I was almost repelled. But then I heard some good reports about the film, especially in essentially kicking the daylights out of Sex and the City 2 at the box office, and I thought, “Maybe it’s not that bad.” And frankly, it WASN’T all that bad. I’m putting my reputation on the line here, so let me be clear. If you’ve never seen a Shrek film, you’re not going to see this one. If you liked only the first film, you

Back together... Shrek and Donkey

will be disappointed with this one but you won’t hate it like the second and third in the series. If you loved those two blunders, this is your cue to stop reading this column (at least when I’m writing). Yes, Donkey (Eddie Murphy) is still not as funny as he was in the first movie, and the supporting characters are sort of a blur here as well. The storyline is lifted, no doubt, but it’s done so with some originality. Shrek (Mike Myers), burdened by his new family and extenuating obligations from princess-

turned-ogre Fiona (Cameron Diaz), wishes for a simpler life when he was a “real” ogre, the one whom villagers would hunt down with pitchforks. He gets his wish by dealing with the conniving Rumplestiltskin (Walter Dohrn – of SpongeBob SquarePants fame). And it’s not like this storyline hasn’t been attempted in recent history as well. Consider Santa Clause 3, where Santa (Tim Allen) wishes for the same, and the conniving Jack Frost (Martin Short) takes over the North Pole in a surreal alternative world. But that movie failed miserably. Shrek Forever After manages to pull something together with this overused storyline. Not sure I would spend extra to see it in IMAX (still can’t believe it’s playing in IMAX), but it certainly has enough color and action to see on the big screen. Okay. There’s a half-decent review for supposedly the last in a series that really shouldn’t have been. Can we retire Shrek now?

Bird Droppings

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

W

ANT to know what this column is about? Well, everything you are about to read can be summarized in the title... Just Go Birding. What’s birding? It’s turbo-talk for birdwatching. It’s marketing. See, nobody wants to go bird-watching. What would your neighbors say? What would the kids think? Bird-watching shrinks your gonads, makes you watch the BBC, read the New York Times Book Review, enjoy every moment of every day you don binoculars and go outside. Okay, I lied about the gonad part. But the rest of it is true. Birding is just the neatest, fastest-growing, most engaging, friendly, discovery-filled and CHEAP hobby this side of dreaming. It gives you a whole new intimacy with the natural world. It prompts you to travel to places that the members of your bridge club never heard of. It will bring you into contact with some of

the nicest, most intelligent, cordial, friendly, engaging (and even financially secure) people you will ever meet. Hint to moms trying to fix up their son or daughter with a balanced partner for life: put bird-watchers at the head of your list. Okay. So what do you do if you are already married and your spouse is NOT a bird-watcher?

Easy. Make them one, too. The fastedgrowing band in the birding spectrum is recently retired or soon-to-retire couples who are looking for something to get up in the morning and get jazzed about. Like birding. It’s a treasure hunt. Except you don’t need a map. You need a field guide – a book that helps your identify the birds you see. It’s like going to an art gallery. Except there’s an element of suspense. Birds move; fly. Now you see them; now you don’t. Paintings just hang on the wall. How much of a challenge is that? And birds do things. Run, feed, challenge each other for prime territory, defend young, court, mate. You can see all this by sitting on the beach. Yep. There’s birds there. In fact, there are birds just about everywhere you might care to go (and lots of places you wouldn’t). If you life in North America, you are almost certain to be within 100 yards of a bird no matter

Bird Droppings ? From Page 125 where you are. In Cape May, it’s more likely that you are within a clam shell’s toss of a bird. Cape May is the most famous bird-watching location in North America. It got that title for a reason. I mentioned field guides earlier. Yep. You are going to need a field guide. They’re small. Cheap, too. For the price of a modestly-priced bottle of wine, you can buy a book that decodes every species of bird in North America. Stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory. Talk to the nice, knowledgeable person behind the counter. They’ll fix you up. If you don’t want to go to the trouble of finding and identifying your own bird, you can just show up on a regularly scheduled birding field trip. They happen every day. And the people who go on a birding field trip are a representative cross section of those nice, intelligent, cordial, friendly, engaging (and financially secure) people I was talking about. In other words, they are much like you. By the way, the financially secure element is optional. That’s why birding is cheap. There are always birds to see in Cape May – no matter where you go. But first, head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory – THE place for anything

to do with nature – and pick up the summer schedule of daily walks. The CMBO (609-8842736) is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point and is open 9:30am to 4:30pm every day. If you have any questions at all, ask any of our staff or volunteers – they are always glad to help with anything you need, even things you didn’t know you needed yet. While there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, the latest in books, bird feeders, and some great new and fun merchandise, including our exclusive CMBO logo jewelry, clothing, totes, and more. Take a look at the sightings log or our website to check what’s being seen, scan the bookshelves, pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, or just browse around. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit us online www.BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Vice President of Natural History for New Jersey Audubon Society. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the Cape May Bird Observatory), he has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

You can call, text or email us & we will respond immediately With a long list of GREAT REFERENCES we are sure that if you contact us, you will be our next happy customer!
