The Police Blotter

Every week we feature quirky police reports from small towns across America. GRASS VALLEY, CA: At 11:24pm, a woman called the sheriff’s office from the 11000 block of Bandolier Way reporting that a large bear keeps entering her house. She said the bear took the screen off her window and came in. – The Union

Learn Russian With Tanya

YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act as being extremely xenophobic. We at Exit Zero warmly embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and to this end offer a weekly lesson to help you communicate. Please note – the “Russian” we are printing is our phonetic interpretation, to make it easy to follow. Did Russia Ever have a Wild West? V Rossi kogda-nibud byl Dikii Zapad? And, here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Da. V Sankt Peterburge bylo kak na Ddikom Zapade posle razvala Sovetskogo Souza. Which translates to: Yes. St. Petersburg was like the Wild West after the fall of the Soviet Union. – Tanya Zotava

Weird Word Of The Week

A Picture From The Past

Don Pocher

THE Shoreham Hotel at Cape May Point was built in 1890, the same year as the Cape May Point cottage that was given to President Benjamin Harrison by John Wanamaker. It was believed that the novelty of vacationing near the President would drive business at the Shoreham, so the hotel’s manager, A. H. Hamilton, was disappointed when President Harrison chose not to run for a second term. The hotel was sold in 1909 to the Sisters of St. Joseph, who still own it today and use it as a summer retreat. – Ben Miller

Facebook Mystery Contest

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, taken by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know what road is on the other side of that pond, you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, fullcolor photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Random Fact Of The Week

THE golden age of cowboys actually only lasted from 1867 to 1886 (from the time the first railroad led from Abilene to Chicago to the great cold during the winters of 1885/86 during which 85% of all cattle died).

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Your charm will be excessively appealing today. Use it wisely. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a bowl of hot and sour soup and a red dragon roll. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editor

L

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

OOKING for something to do this weekend? You obviously haven’t read the rest of this issue yet. (If that’s because you always turn to this column first, well, thank you kindly, I’m really touched.) This weekend is ridiculously full of fun events, some of which are going to clash, to the possible detriment of good causes. But lucky YOU get to enjoy a weekend of fun and games. (Actually, all of the events are on Saturday, so you really WILL be spoiled for choice.) The marquee event of the weekend is the third annual Harborfest, which is on from 10am to 5pm and, as you might imagine, is centered around the harbor. There is live music, fresh seafood, a scallop challenge (not entirely sure what that is – are the scallops fighting each other, or is it a cook-off?), beer gardens, and lots and lots of kids’ activities. Around the same time, the Life Rolls On Foundation is hosting an event called They Will Surf Again, in Wildwood Crest, at which kids of all ages and experience level get to enjoy surfing, with all the equipment provided by the foundation, which is so vocally and ably promoted by local surfer Chad deSatnick. In the evening, there are two great events that are both well worth the price of admission, even though one of them is technically free. First of all, the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May is holding a free beach party between Ocean and Gurney Streets, with all donations being given to help the folks on the Gulf coast who are battling the disastrous after-effects of the worst oil spill

in American history. Local legends like George Mesterhazy and Jay Bethel will be playing for free, along with others. This is a really nice gesture by the chamber and I’m sure they will attract a great crowd. A bit further east, at the end of the beach, Cape May Stage is holding its annual Beach Ball at the Beach Club. And yes, as you can guess, it’s being held at the Beach Club of Cape May, from 7pm to 10pm. There is wonderful food being catered by my good pal Annie Mullock, and she never disappoints. There are also some worldclass auction items. You should read the story on page 63 for full details, but I will mention one prize that is absolutely priceless, and that is... editing Exit Zero for a week! So, if the idea of bumping me off my soap box for a week is appealing, as well as having the power to pick the front page photograph, then get along to the Beach Club and get your wallet out. And yes, this auction item is available to everyone, and that means you, Mayor Mahaney, or anyone else who has felt slighted by my columns.

And we’re not done yet... the good people of Historic Cold Spring Village just happen to be hosting one of THEIR coolest events of the year, the Military Timeline Weekend, during which reenactors from conflicts spanning several centuries will be setting up camp — it’s the perfect Father’s Day outing! Check out soldiers from the Hundred Years War, Boer War, American Revolution, Civil War, World War II and the Korean War. Thankfully, this event runs over both days, so it’s probably a good idea to visit the Village on Sunday if you want to attend Harborfest on Saturday. ONE of America’s brightest stars, and definitely the country’s funniest woman, just spent four days in our lovely little town. Tina Fey, star of Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, and an eerily-brilliant impersonator of Sarah Palin, spent four nights at one of the Virginia Hotel’s cottages on Jackson Street. She was regularly spotted at the Congress Hall pool and enjoyed dinners at the Rusty Nail and The Blue Pig Tavern. She also spent Monday night on the Wildwood boardwalk, wearing a Cape May sweatshirt. Now, THAT’S cool. Thanks for that last piece of breaking news from our newly-appointed Wildwood correspondent, Terry O’Brien. “She seemed very mellow and low-key,” said someone who sat next to her on the Cape May beach, and that’s a REAL quote, not one of those “close friends” or “sources” you read aboutg in Us Weekly. Come back and see us again, Tina. You’re definitely the kind of visitor who will put the Cool into Cool Cape May. Until next week, have a wonderful weekend. The weather’s going to be perfect.

Downhome cooking and a really friendly, laidback vibe in this gem of a place, just a few minutes from Cape May. New owners Jim Linnington and Ed Niemann deliver creative comfort foods and a lot of overall improvements. This Villas spot favorite attracts people from all over. Why? The food is reliably good and very affordable. “The local café with the wholesome aroma” is what they call it... and that’s how we describe it. Very apt! A chic interior and stylish food, but the ambience is anything but pretentious. Modern American cuisine. A little taste of the tropics at this restaurant, which is located at the Atlas Inn on Beach Avenue. Congress Hall’s restaurant is better than ever, serving classic tavern food with a twist or two along the way. Congress Hall’s chic basement nightclub has an assortment of great music on the weekends and a cool vibe.

A Night On The Town

Bars, restaurants, culture and events... Dan Mathers’ weekly guide to what’s going on in Cape May

I

T WAS terrifying, exhilarating, completely intoxicating and I almost threw up. No, I didn’t go to some wild old bar and take too many shots of tequila – I got married. I had plenty to drink, but that wasn’t what was responsible for the roiling in my stomach. This feeling came much earlier in the day. Standing on top of the decking at Coral Avenue Beach in Cape May Point awaiting the arrival of the bride, I leaned over the railing and moaned to my best man, “I think I’m gonna puke.” I never thought I’d feel that way. Only 12 hours earlier, over Bud Lights at the Ugly Mug, my close friends were remarking how serene I seemed for a husband to be. “You’re the calmest groom I’ve ever seen,” said Rachel Chupein. But soon after, all their talk began to get to me. You can only hear “I can’t believe you’re getting married,” and “This is craziness, this is forever,” so many times before you start to go a little nuts. I can’t say Friday night was the best or most restful night’s sleep I’d ever had, but I got through it and ran around town on Saturday morning, picking up the cake, grabbing the

soda, delivering the booze and trying to stay busy enough that “You’re getting married,” wasn’t the only thought my brain could process, but it still occupied a significant portion of my mental function. Eventually, though, I was climbing the dunes of Cape May Point heading to forever. I stood on the deck, and my cousin and best man Jack Lindeman saw me taking long, deep breaths. He ask, “Who are the starting 11 for the

US today?” I couldn’t think of one player. Not Landon Donovan. Not Tim Howard. Not Clint Dempsey. My idols, my heroes... forgotten and replaced by a single thought. But – the moment Tanya crested the hill carrying her bouquet all that worry disappeared. Tears came to my eyes, and I did my best to keep them back. I wanted so badly to hold her and to kiss her, but I impatiently awaited Reverend Jack Wright’s permission to kiss the bride. As I write this story, I continue to daydream and those tears begin to well up yet again. I doubt there will be many more meaningful or memorable moments in my life than first seeing her there looking at me. The reception was a blur, and it extended long into the evening. When I saw him the next day, I offered my friend Erik Wszalek a glass of champagne. He responded, “Nah. I’m still trying to recover from the 13-hour reception.” There are a few moments that stand out: our first dance; cutting the cake; the toasts, and the fact that the USA managed a draw with England in the World Cup. And I actually remembered all the players’ names before kickoff.

A Hilarious Romp Opens At Cape May Stage

C

“I Hate Hamlet” features a large cast of big-name actors

APE May Stage is proud to announce the production of the work of another New Jersey native – Paul Rudnick’s I Hate Hamlet! Directed by Roy Steinberg and featuring the acting talents of Kate McCauley Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married¸ Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement), John Patrick Hayden (Tartuffe), Karis Danish (Days of our Lives, The Secretaries), Marlena Lustik (Foxy, Times Square), David Birney (St. Elsewhere, The Deadly Game), and Anthony Reimer (Rescue Me, Chasing Zero), the show will open Thursday, June 17 at 8:00pm at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse on Bank and Lafayette Streets. I Hate Hamlet is an “unapologetically silly” romp (says the New York Times), centering on Andrew Rally, a celebrated television actor who, after the demise of his series, makes the transition to New York City for his chance to play Hamlet in Central Park. His confidence at tackling the Bard is marginal at best, and his stress level is compounded by his girlfriend’s maddening hold on her virginity. His real estate agent shows him an out-of-place

Gothic apartment just off Washington Square – the perfect home for an actor about to play Hamlet for the first time. Little does he know exactly how perfect: when his agent comes for a visit, she reveals that she’d once had an affair with John Barrymore in the very same

apartment while he was playing his legendary Hamlet uptown. Following a séance to determine the veracity of her claim, Barrymore’s ghost, dressed in full Shakespearean garb, appears. Fuelled by brandy and braggadocio, the notorious wastrel explains that he attends to every young actor about to attempt Hamlet, eventually coaching Andrew in the dual pursuits of acting and love. Hilarity ensues as Andrew wrestles with Barrymore, his sword, his conscience, and his ultimate decision to play Hamlet. Performances of I Hate Hamlet are Tuesday through Sunday at 8:00pm. Tickets are $35 adults, $30 seniors, and $12.50 students. Assisted listening devices are also available upon request for the hearing impaired. Call (609) 884-1341 for reservations and information or visit the theatre’s website, www.capemaystage.com. The show is presented with the support of La Mer Beachfront Inn, CapeSCape, and The Corner Cottage Apartments. Season sponsors are 410 Bank Street/Frescos, Exit Zero, Washington Inn, Cape May Winery, Lucky Bones.

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover

I

An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz

ADMIT, with unabashed conviction, that I am more of an animal person than a people person. I know that there are many who cannot, or will not, begin to comprehend that statement, but I know that there are also those of you who understand. As much as I love my own animals – Norma Jean (pit mix), Polo (Chihuahua/rat terrier) and Betsy (deaf/moderately blind/chubby Chihuahua), Linus and Lucy (rabbits) and Bret Michaels (neighbor’s Beta fish that came to visit and never went home) – I have yet to pack them up, stuff them in the Honda, and traverse down the Parkway on a holiday weekend. However, when this seemingly surreal event does happen, we will definitely be headed for Cape May. So now I’m wondering, what would we do with them? Surprisingly (I think) the rabbits have already vacationed with us (twice, once involving an unfortunate towing situation off the Parkway at 11:30 at night on Fourth of July weekend). Bret is staying home (he’s in water already so what’s better than that?) so I needed some dog-friendly ideas. First and

foremost is the lodging. The Billmae Cottage Guest Suites, located at 1015 Washington Avenue and The Billmae Cottage, Too! located at 1037 Lafayette Street (609-898-8558) offer country charm in a seaside setting with a dogfriendly outdoor shower and a fenced yard. Your first dog is included in room rate. If you’re considering a beachfront hotel setting, try the Marquis de Lafayette, located at 501 Beach Avenue, which welcomes both dogs and cats (my mother would be so pleased). There are four room styles offered

and the pet fee is $25 per night. Other pets may be accepted, so it is best to call ahead and consult with the Pet Room Specialist (seriously!) at 800-257-0432. There’s also the Highland House, located at 131 North Broadway in West Cape May, which accepts “just about all pets”. Contact them for more information (and clarification about that pitch) at 609-898-1198. Dogs are not welcomed on the beaches in Cape May. However, you may enjoy a beachbound dog at the Lower Township beaches. But be sure to clean up afterwards! The Cape May Winery, at 711 Town Bank Road, allows leashed dogs on their grounds and by the picnic tables (just not in the tasting room!) as does the Turdo Winery, at 3911 Bayshore Road. Dogs are also welcome to explore the park by the Historic Cold Spring Village (not the buildings). Many restaurants which offer outdoor seating welcome leashed, well-mannered pets. Lastly, just think of of the quality time you will spend traveling in the car with your pets.

The Old Fogey

O

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

H, I DO love a cowboy. In the old days, Cape May was the end point (on land) for the little-known WyomingParis cattle drives (those Frenchies love their beef). We would herd tens of thousands of head of steer to Cape May, where they would await transportation to Europe. We used the ships that had just arrived with hopeful settlers, lured by our city’s newspaper ads suggesting that every visitor would receive a plot of land, a new cabin and an assortment of animals to farm. (In truth, the ads were not lies per se, just slightly positive: newcomers, once they paid their city tax, which amounted to whatever gold, silver or gem ornaments they had on their person, were given a hatchet and were free to wander off and cut down some trees for a house, and to raise whatever wild pigs/buffalo/squirrels/Wildwooders they could catch.) The ships were then filled with protesting cattle. Ah, a walk through the city of Cape May in those days was an adventure: the wooden

sidewalks were 10 deep with strutting cowboys, drunk natives and ladies of questionable virtue. The noise of spurs striking wood was equaled only by that of leather chaps rustling and creaking as we walked. I say “we” as I of course was the most cowboyish of those cowboys. My stetson was a full four feet across, I had no fewer than six pearlyhandled revolvers holstered around my slim hips, and my chaps were each made from a

whole cow, and could on a windy day carry me along at speeds equaling a fast horse. We used to drink neat whiskey, chew baccy and call each other out at the slightest provocation. I remember one Saturday afternoon it took me three hours to walk the promenade, as I had to duel the Thomson Twins on account of their looking at me funny (I later found out they both had a squinty eye), Big Bob McCallister (he spat some baccy on my boot), The James Gang and a score of others. By the time I got to Uncle Bill’s Pancake House, I was reeking of gunpowder, my trigger fingers were blistered and I had been shot 32 times, none seriously, because I carried a total of 58 lucky silver cigarillo cases about my person, to deflect bullets. And there was more action to come – I had to shoot the waiter for being too stingy with the maple syrup and the hat check guy for creasing my brim, too. Ah, happy days: I am off to polish my six-shooter in memory of those carefree times.

The Story Of One Very Special Woman

H

East Lynne Theater Company presents “Emma Goldman: My Life”

OW difficult is it to create a brand new show – a production that no one has ever seen before? How and why do playwrights, actors, directors, and stage managers do what they do? And who is Emma Goldman? Immediately after the show on Friday, June 25, audience members will have the opportunity to ask these and other questions of the crew that brought the world premiere of Emma Goldman: My Life to East Lynne Theater Company’s stage. ELTC’s Artistic Director Gayle Stahlhuth asked actress/playwright Lorna Lable if she would be interested in creating a one-woman show about Emma Goldman. Lorna began her research and finished the first draft in February 2008. Director Karen Case Cook began working with Lorna in the fall of 2009. Lorna was a professional modern dancer with the well-known Ruth Currier and Eleo Pomare Dance Companies, performing in such venues as Lincoln Center and City Center in NYC. She’s performed her one-woman show, The Door is Mine, a positive look at divorce, along

Lorna Lable as Emma Goldman

the east coast from Vermont to Pennsylvania. Emma Goldman, called by J. Edgar Hoover, “the most dangerous woman in America,” was born in Kovno, Russia. At age 16 she emigrated to the United States and worked in a clothing factory in Rochester, NY. When she read about

the Haymarket Riots in Chicago in 1889, she knew she had to be active in the union movement and moved to NYC. Here she met Johann Most and Alexander Berkman. In 1906 she founded the monthly magazine, Mother Earth, devoted to social justice. An opponent of the draft during World War I, Emma was imprisoned for advocating a person’s right to choose to fight or not. On November 7, 1919, the second anniversary of the Russian Revolution, around 10,000 suspected communists and anarchists were arrested in 23 different cities. Emma was among them. Until her death in 1940, she never stopped fighting for a kinder, better world. Emma Goldman: My Life runs from June 16 through July 10, every Wednesday through Saturday at 8:30pm at The First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street, Cape May. Tickets are $28 general admission; $23 for seniors and those with disabilities and their companions; and $13 for full-time students. Children ages 12 and under are always free. For information and reservations, call 609-8845898 or visit www.eastlynnetheater.org.

Free beach concert this Saturday will be a fundraiser for victims of the BP oil spill

T

HIS Saturday, June 19 there will be a free live concert from 7pm to 9pm on the beach, between Ocean and Gurney, in Cape May. This event is part of the Cape May Chamber of Commerce’s many Fun, Free And Friendly events headed up by the Towne Crier Committee. This free concert will feature some local musicians such as Jay Bethel, George Mesterhazy and Maura McKinney Mastro. “Because we are able to use our clean beautiful beaches and enjoy all the birds and wildlife surrounding us here in the Cape May area we feel like we should help those communities and especially the groups that are trying to save the wildlife and birds in Louisiana. “Therefore we are using this opportunity to help raise some funds for that effort and will be taking up a collection at the party,” said a chamber spokeswoman. Those of us who are fortunate enough to live here realize how awful this situation is and the trickledown effect it is having on the

residents and businesses in that area. Please come out and enjoy our beautiful beaches, some great music and help give a little something to help this cause. Grab some family/ friends and a beach chair or blanket and

enjoy this FREE concert, dancing in the sand is always a good way to spend an evening.” The chamber also organizes the Free Movies at the Beach every Thursday night in July and August, so put those dates on your calendars now – 7/8 Star Wars; 7/15 Black Beauty (1971); 7/22 Robin Hood (1952); 7/29 Alice in Wonderland (animated Disney 1951); 8/5 ET; 8/12 King Kong (1933); 8/19 Jaws; 8/26 To be arranged. The movies begin at 8:30pm behind Convention Hall, with kids’ games starting at 7:30pm. Meanwhile, more help for the folks in Louisiana is coming from Aleathea’s restaurant, at the Inn of Cape May. All week, through this Saturday, June 19 $1 from every lunch and dinner will be donated to the National Wildlife Refuge Assocation’s fund for the oil cleanup on the Gulf Coast. THE Greater Cape May Historical Society is sponsoring an Antiques and Fine Crafts Fair on Saturday, June 26 (rain date Sunday, June 27) in Wilbraham Park, across from the CVS, from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Beach Ball Puts The Fun Into Fundraising!

This Saturday, Cape May Stage is hosting its annual fiesta at the Beach Club of Cape May

S

UMMER in Cape May means different things to everyone – funnel cakes on the boardwalk, perusing the shops on the Washington Street Mall, or just wandering the gorgeous Victorian streets in search of a quiet spot to have a great meal. However, everyone can agree upon the great times and memories that await revelers on Cape May’s famous beaches. Cape May Stage has been a part of those memories for over two decades, so join them this Saturday, June 19 for their annual Beach Ball at the Beach Club. You will be dancing under a canopy of stars at the Beach Club of Cape May to live summer beach and ballroom tunes provided by The Sensations. You can gorge yourself on a feast of gastronomic delights catered by Annie Mullock while taking full advantage of our plentiful open bar. This year’s Signature Sunset Margarita will be flowing all night long – don’t forget to sample one or several! There is a live and silent auction that will feature several exciting items. One of the highlights will be a beautiful cedar chest depict-

ing one of Cape May’s lovely cottages, hand painted by local artist Penny Beck of Room Service – the perfect addition to any room. A special item up for bids is a gorgeous Sunset Sail for four followed by dinner at the Corinthian Yacht Club of Cape May. There are several overnight and weekend stays available, including a weekend stay in Center City Philadelphia with dinner and tickets for two at the Walnut Street Theater. The Canal Inn, situated on the waterfront in historic Lewes, DE, has provided an overnight stay and two spa robes, a gift certificate for lunch at The Buttery, a bottle of wine, and a gift certificate for freshly roasted coffee beans. In addition, there is a one-night stay at the beautiful Sweetwater Farm Bed & Breakfast in Glen Mills, PA, including a tour of the local vineyards with wine-tasting. The Royal Family of Monaco has spent many happy years vacationing at the Sweetwater, as the property is owned by the nephew of the late Princess Grace. For all the thrill seekers and speed freaks out there, there is one auction item that you’ll want to make sure you win: an hour of track

time with Rick White and the Porsche Club of America at the New Jersey Motorsports Park in nearby Millville. This world-class Le Mans-style circuit boasts 14 turns, a half- mile straightaway, and 100 feet of elevations! You’ll spend one hour in the classroom for “Performance Driving 101”, then ride with Rick in his 2008 Porsche 997 Carrea-4S – top speed 185mph. Finally, once again, the editorship of Exit Zero will be up for grabs! This has been one of the most popular items in the last two years. Unseat Jack Wright for the week, write his Ramblings and choose the cover photo. Gather all of your closest friends and treat yourselves to a night filled with food, fun, and new friends to be made. The attire is beachwear, so pull out your special party dress, or your favorite Tommy Bahama shirt and flipflops and get ready to HAVE A BALL! The fun begins at 7:00pm and goes until 10:00 pm. Tickets are $75, and proceeds support the ongoing artistic, cultural, and educational programs at Cape May Stage. Call (609) 884-1341 for tickets and information.

It’s an exciting, fairly new women’s store brought to you sisters Jen and Julie, who also run the Victorious store.

Owner Pat Jackson has been designing jewelry since the 1970s and has had her shop since the 1980s. You won’t find anything synthetic or treated – just satisfaction.

Everywhere you look there are lovely surprises – a tea set from the 1920s, a cylinder from a turn-of-the-century Edison phonograph or a Wallce Nutting hand-colored photograph.

Chances are good that you won’t get past the front door without trying a piece of something delicious!

It’s the smallest shop on the mall, but it’s packed with beautiful things – Rolex watches, pearls, sapphires, porcelain vases, cut-glass and pocket watches to name a few.

There are more spices, oils, sauces, mustards, herbs, fresh coffees and salad dressing than you can shake a spoon at (they have those too!).

A Killer Read

A chilling and compelling new short story by Terry O’Brien (aka Cape May’s Stephen King) Chapter 5: The Plan

T

« If you missed previous chapters of A Killer Read you can catch up online at www.exitzero.us.

HE KILLER had a nice morning. He’d completed a vigorous workout, which consisted of a lot of Eastern hoodoo and liberal use of free weights. He’d swapped stories with the owner of the North Beach Gym in North Cape May, which included semi-fictitious tales of female conquest, kvetched over coffee with his spotter, a gay nightclub owner who constantly kidded him about switching sides, which sometimes intrigued the killer, although he had more writers to kill before flexing his sexuality. After the gym was Uncle Bill’s for a ham and provolone omelet and side of oniony home fries, which he wolfed down quickly before the sweat soaking his shirt could dry and turn rank. Then over to the Super Wawa for more coffees and a half-dozen assorted muffins and donuts. Thinking twice, he reached back in for a half-dozen more. He knew he’d better move quickly; his pits were starting to stink.

A Killer Read ? From Page 77 He made his way to the front, dropped his haul on the counter, and moved to the newspaper rack. He grabbed the Philly and NY papers as well as all the locals – the Herald, the Shoppe, Exit Zero, the Ocean & Globe. He paid the lady behind the counter and wondered if there was a secret factory somewhere that manufactured Wawa employees. Next he was in his SUV, apple fritter between his teeth. He began rifling through the local papers. All of them led with the recent discovery that a killer was preying on local journalists. And all of them featured glowing, heartfelt tributes to their fallen writers. The Cape May news cycle, unlike every other place on Earth, was still weekly. Big news tended to stack up so the area was stunned when the news of the killings all broke seemingly at once. The killer, The Editor as the local police had branded him, looked with great pride through the periodicals, skimming the tributes and photos but most enjoyably reading how the police had no idea who was behind it. He chomped on the pastry, picked up Exit Zero, and smiled. Ever contrary, the magazine said nothing about the murders on the front page. Quite the opposite. The headline read; “Exit Zero Publishing Announces New Book!” Below the banner headline was a picture of Travis Whitaker. The Editor knew him from the big case he had worked the previous summer. The Editor thought him handsome, but not annoyingly so. Trim black hair over a pleasant face and square jaw. He could probably stand to lose 10 or 15 lbs but he was by no means fat. He read the paragraph under the photo... “Exit Zero proudly announces the addition of Travis Whitaker to its family of authors. In a deal reached several days ago, Mr Whitaker, a private investigator who rose to national prominence

And all of them featured glowing, heartfelt tributes to their fallen writers. in the summer of 2009 with the Dead & Breakfast case, will author an account of those terrifying events. A press conference is scheduled for 2pm, Wednesday. Continued on Page 3.” The Editor turned and read the rest of the story. It rehashed the first paragraph several times and offered another photo of Whitaker with his partner, Tim DeMarco. It was DeMarco who worried the Editor. Whitaker looked passive, a little soft, a passenger in his own life. But DeMarco looked not physically imposing, and something about his demeanor said PROCEED WITH CAUTION. And honestly, after the ease with which he had dispatched his first seven victims, the Editor was a little aroused at the prospect of a challenge. The Editor also marveled for a moment at the balls on Donal Lonegan, who had not only ignored the murders but plastered the face of the Editor’s next victim on the cover. He looked at the dashboard clock – 10:43. Enough time to drop off the coffee and pastries to the guys then head home for a shower and shave before attending the press conference. He jammed the truck into gear, swung out of the lot, and home. Turned out he had time to shower, shave, and oil his gun. 1:45PM – EXIT ZERO STORE I was nervous. I mean, I was always a little nervous. But this was several kinds of nervous at once. I was nervous about

A Killer Read ? From Page 79 this stupid press conference, although I had no one to blame but myself; it was my own stupid idea. Announcing a book for Exit Zero was my plan, and I thought it a good one. It was our, well, my hope (Tim wasn’t on board) that splashing my face on the paper might draw the killer away from Sam Howard and David McComsey, two Exit Zero writers with upcoming releases, and towards me. But I hadn’t really considered the public speaking aspect of the plan when I magically conjured it from my ass. I was nervous because my high school flame, Cathy Steltzer, was out there. She called a couple days earlier. Her family was down on vacation, she’d seen me in the news last summer and did I want to meet up for coffee or lunch or something. Sure. Why not? I’ll just be working a serial killer case and putting myself in harm’s way to protect two guys I barely know because I need the cash. Absolutely! Italian or seafood? I was nervous the press conference idea might actually work and that some time in the next half-hour some psycho would rush into the store and start firing rounds at my head. That hadn’t been the killer’s MO before, but who knew? Serial killers weren’t regarded as the reliable types. “Jesus,” Tim said, sidling up behind me. “You look like a guy in a maternity ward.” “Nervous,” I said and wiped a hand across my forehead. It came back wet. “How’s it look?” “Half-dozen print media, a handful of looky-loos, no one with a serial killer T-shirt on, a couple of news cameras…” “News cameras?” “Dude, you’re announcing a book deal in Cape May. In case you haven’t heard, someone is killing everyone with a book deal in Cape May. It’s a big story.” “Great. Awesome plan.” Tim clapped me on the back. “I’ll do my best to keep you alive but I can’t promise anything.”

Page 81

I looked at him. “Why did I hire you again?” A drop of sweat ran into my eye and I blinked. “Comfort,” he answered. “And girls. I’m a babe magnet.” Tim patted his ribcage where his brown leather holster, was concealed, just like mine. Copycat. “I got your back,” he said. He nodded. I nodded. He left. I felt a little better. Not a lot. So I paced. I was in the back room of the Exit Zero store among boxes of T-shirts, books and assorted whatnot. Out on the main sales floor they set up a little stage with table and chairs. I could hear the chattering of the crowd. Sam Howard and David McComsey were behind the curtain partition, looking almost as nervous as I. McComsey smirked at me. I’m not sure his taut Irish face was capable of a smile. “Your partner, that’s a pretty cool customer. He’d make a great character in one of my stories.” “Probably,” I answered. Am I not a cool customer? Sam Howard said, “That’s so funny, I was just thinking the same thing.” “Yeah,” I said. “He’s a good guy. But don’t cross him. Ever.” The two nervous writers got two notches nervouser and I felt a little bad. But it was me putting my neck on the block. The two men could not have been more different. McComsey was tall, thin, even a little gaunt, like he’d survived some lean times. Howard was 5-8 and round, like a man who’d known nothing but comfort, with a face that, even in this tense moment, exuded an inner fullness of himself. Of course, physical appearance told you jack about a man. It was entirely possible that McComsey had been born to billionaire oil magnates and Howard had grown up on the hardscrabble streets. I’m just saying what I saw. David said, “Your book, it’s a good idea. Could be a great true life crime read. Can’t believe I didn’t think of it first. Let me know if you need any help with it.”

Cape Curiosity

A weekly historical column by Ben Miller, author of the best-selling “The First Resort”

B

ACK by popular demand, I have another Cape May mythbusters column for you. This week we will look at three common stories which are frequently told on tours of the historic district, can be found on the internet and are passed along through word of mouth. Chances are you’ve probably heard one or more of these popular tales. We’ll start things off by investigating a story I’ve heard about Congress Hall ever since I was a kid. It involves Annie Knight, former owner of the hotel, who lived in a cottage across the street from it. The cottage had been willed to her by her father, Edward C. Knight, who died of pneumonia in the house on July 21, 1892. The tale alleges that Annie Knight had a restriction placed on the Congress Hall deed preventing any future construction on the western side of the property. The reasoning behind this was apparently Knight’s desire to preserve her cottage’s ocean view in perpetuity. To get to the truth, I spoke with someone

who is intimately familiar with the Congress Hall property and its deed. I contacted Sandy Montano, Senior Project Manager for Cape Advisors, and the person who oversaw the hotel’s $22 million renovation in 2002. When I asked her about the tale, her answer

was simple and to the point: “It is not true.” The only real question here is who started the rumor and why. Next up, we’ll take a look at Cape May’s first ‘Victorian’ Convention Hall. I can’t

Cape Curiosity ? From Page 97 begin to count how many times I’ve heard it described that way recently. Regardless of anyone’s personal opinion about its design, the truth is that building was anything but Victorian. Built in 1917, 16 years after the end of the Victorian period, the first Convention Hall was basically three plain rectangle buildings positioned together. There were two on either side of a long hallway in the front and the third positioned centrally behind them. The façade that everyone remembers was in the Mission Revival style of architecture. You may recognize another building in town that matches the style, the former Nelson Z. Graves cottage, now known as the Mission Inn. By the way, for anyone as curious as I was when I wrote this column, his full name was Nelson Zwinglius Graves. I’ll end things this week by addressing the myth that the Washington Street Mall was the first pedestrian mall in America. One gentleman vehemently tried convincing me that this was the case last summer, which was odd because I didn’t disagree with him. I wasn’t 100% sure at the time and I didn’t want to put my foot in my mouth. Maybe he

could see the disbelief in my eyes. I wish I could say this one was true, but it’s not. The first successful street-turned mall was built in 1959 on Burdick Street in Kalamazoo, MI. There were earlier attempts that failed, but regardless, Cape May’s signature mall wasn’t built until 1972. Even though it wasn’t the first, Cape

Activity Of The Week

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Beach games Man is so made that he can only find relaxation from one kind of labor by taking up another. – Anatole France

I

F YOU’RE like most Cape May visitors, you find yourself, at the end of the work week, working hard at playing. You set up a little camp – beach chairs, lunch in a cooler, towels and umbrella – a perfect oasis for sensible adults. Then you ignore it, choosing instead to stand out in the sun and smack a ball back and forth. You’re not alone, which leads to player trades and mini-tournaments. (Maybe you’ll meet a kindred spirit like Lauren, a Chicago native who is leery of the Atlantic but plays beach games like a native, aiming her “errant” shots nimbly at a “coach” offering advice.) Beach games let friends become family, allow generations to bond, and provide fodder for dinner conversation. Some of our favorites... Races All you need are your toes to draw “start” and “finish” lines. Add two buckets, and

you’ve got the makings of a relay. Catch Toss a ball, any ball. Try a simple catch, dodge ball, or monkey-in-the-middle. Frisbee The beach classic can be enhanced with targets, or adapted to any skill level. Wiffle Ball Another classic, but possible only on empty stretches of beach. Poverty Beach used to be a great location, but these days large stretches are blocked off for nesting shore birds, and the rest of the beach is ungroomed and a danger to bare feet. (On Memorial Day,

there were no lifeguards or bathrooms either, which makes one wonder how the City of Cape May justifies charging for beach access.) Hillbilly Horseshoes (also known as ladder ball) Bolas – pairs of balls connected by strings – are tossed on a rack. You play to an exact total of 21 points, so strategy comes into play, and less skillful players always have the chance to catch up. You can buy this game, or get some PVC from Swain’s to make your own. Paddle Ball Two big paddles and a little ball. Draw lines for a court or call everything “in bounds.” Most games can be adapted to the beach with a little forethought. Keep your tolerance for do-overs handy, as referees are in short supply. Eliminate horseshoes and bocce, which are awkward to carry; and soccer and lacrosse, which require too much space. Avoid the beach entrance and the space in front of the lifeguards, and keep your eyes open. (No matter how careful you are, someone on a cell phone may wander into your play area and get hit with a ball.) Establish your rules, and play ball! Next week: Prepare the Pooch for Vacation

The Movie Column

“Please Give” reviewed by Tom Sims

I

F EVER a film captured the essence of the saying “charity begins at home,” it would be Please Give, a new offering from writer/director Nicole Holofcener. The film stars Catherine Keener, who appears in much of Holofcener’s work, perhaps most notable her film Friends with Money. Keener and costar Oliver Platt play a New York City couple (Kate and Alex) who own a vintage furniture store. Kate is constantly trying to help the homeless wherever she goes, but (if this is possible to believe) isn’t always good at it. She tries to give a man her leftovers from dinner out as he stands on the sidewalk near a restaurant. He glances at the leftovers and responds, “I’m waiting for a table.” Awkward! Kate is also not very successful at finding a volunteer opportunity. She cannot understand why she must maintain an almost Pollyanna approach to the residents of a nursing home. And in one of the most moving scenes in the film (or really any film) she cannot stop crying as she tries

“Please Give” is a gem... go see it!

to work with mentally-challenged young people. In an attempt to be charitable closer to home, Kate invites her elderly next-door neighbor and her two granddaughters to dinner. Kate and Alex have already purchased the elderly neighbor’s apartment with plans to expand their own when she dies. This makes for tense moments during the dinner party. The grandmother and one granddaughter are despicable creatures almost beyond belief, but the other grand-

daughter, Rebecca, is a gentle soul (played masterfully by Rebecca Hall – probably best known as the lead in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona). This has got to be one of the most subtle films I’ve ever seen. Beautifully written, with each role brilliantly acted, it gently leads you through the lives of richly-developed characters who relate so well to one another. The one actor who particularly shines is Sarah Steele, who plays Kate and Alex’s daughter, Abby. Her performance is flawless as a teen most definitely with angst. In one scene of unsuccessful philanthropy, Kate attempts to hand a homeless person a twenty dollar bill. Abby grabs the bill before it reaches the guy’s hand, essentially saying, “No way, I’m taking this.” Please Give is one of those rare gems that you need to put some effort into finding. It’s been released through Sony’s independent film distributor, Sony Picture Classics, so you may not find it at a theater near you, but you will want to seek it out this truly inspired film!

UMMER is the time for laughter, and Cape May Stage obliges with a hilarious romp called I Hate Hamlet. There is a half-priced preview on June 16 and a gala opening and after-party at the Pier House on June 17. David Birney plays opposite John Patrick Hayden (both of whom have actually played Hamlet) in this delightful comedy. The rest of the cast is comprised of Broadway veterans and feature film artists as well as polished actors from leading regional theatres. Marlena Lustik, Kate Hathaway, Karis Danish and Anthony Reimer are brilliant comedians as well as dramatic artists. The play tells the story of a television star who has been contracted to play Hamlet in New York’s Central Park and is terrified until the ghost of Barrymore teaches him a thing or two. There is a continued theme from the world premiere of Class and the Second Stage amplifies upon that theme. On June 21, Emmy winner Dave Konig performs his stand-up act that has had Off Broadway audiences cracking up. Residents and visitors to Cape May get to see him perform his special brand of comedy that is related to the character of Andrew Rally in I Hate Hamlet. Laughter has certain health benefits, so do yourself some good and get tickets to this superb show and continue laughing through the main-stage production. Though he rode a horse named lightning, he once rode a tornado and used a rattlesnake for a lasso. 15. The role of Sheriff Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke was portrayed by this actor for all 20 years the show ran.

Bird Droppings

T

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

HIS column is about books. How boring (you are thinking); a string of words discussing words. Well, sorry but that’s your narrow-mindedness talking. In point of fact, I’m not talking about a word book. I’m talking about a picture book. More specifically a book filled with images (and a few supporting words) that will lead you to a world of discovery, wonder, enlightenment, life-long happiness, and world peace in our time. I’m speaking (of course!) about that narrow band of the publishing spectrum known as the field guide; a book designed to help you identify the bird you are seeing. And now you are back to thinking, “how boring.” Boy, you really ARE narrow minded aren’t you? Which could be, in this specific case, a good thing because now that I have that narrow slice of your brain properly focused, I’m going to convince you to run down to the Cape May Bird Observatory and buy The Sibley Guide to Birds.

I repeat – The Sibley Guide to Birds. Which is just the most intelligent, utilitarian, practical, functional, and best all-around field guide to bird identification ever crafted on these American shores. And it was all written and painted in Cape May Point, New Jersey! The Jersey Shore! So not only is it a literary triumph, it is truly a Cape May souvenir.

Okay. So why buy a field guide to the birds in the first place? Because like most people you want world peace, not to mention a world filled with discovery, wonder, enlightenment and happiness. Birds are nature’s most obvious envoys. They sing. They fly. They entertain. They inspire. And they’ve never declared war on the human race (except in movies). The bird droppings on your newlywashed car? That’s a guerilla operation. Why should you buy David Sibley’s field guide instead of the dozen or so other field guides that are on the market? Because it really, really works. It makes bird identification so easy it seems like an afterthought. The layout is brilliant. The illustrations accurate beyond compare. The text spare and apt. But the real reason to buy this book is because nobody in North America knows birds better than David; and, it is his peculiar genius to be able to put this knowledge

Bird Droppings ? From Page 125 in a book and hand it to you. Me? I own about a dozen copies of The Sibley Guide (aka just plain “Sibley”). Have one in the office; one in the other office. One (maybe more) in the car and the wife’s car. One in the kitchen. One in the upstairs bookcase. One in the downstairs bookcase. One in... You get the idea. I NEVER want to be more than a few paces away from a Sibley. You just never know when you are going to need to identify a bird. Of course, I own a lot of other field guides, too. In fact, I own just about all of them. But David’s book is the one I turn to when I’m puzzled about some pint-sized flycatcher or streaky, sparrow-ish like miscreant. If I’ve got a question, David’s got the answer. But maybe you are the kind of person who really doesn’t care about birds (or world peace). Well, you are in luck. It just so happens that David has just come out with The Sibley Guide to Trees! Even nihilists, anarchists, terrorists, patriots, defenders of freedom, mercenaries, industrialists, and assorted warmongers like trees. You’ve got to write your peace-shattering manifestos on something. You’ve got to find something to hide behind when you set on firing a shot to be heard around the world. But alas, David didn’t write his tree book in Cape May Point; although he may have drawn some of the trees here. Doesn’t make nearly as good a souvenir as his bird guide does. If you are interested in looking at The Sibley Guide to Birds (or trees), and possibly buying a copy (or two, just like Seymore), then head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory where they have a selection of Sibleys. THE place for anything

to do with nature, CMBO (609884-2736) is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point and is open 9:30am to 4:30pm every day. If you have any questions at all, ask any of our staff or volunteers – they are always glad to help with anything you need, even things you didn’t know you needed yet. While there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, the latest in books, bird feeders, and some great new and fun merchandise, including our exclusive CMBO logo jewelry, clothing, totes, and more. Take a look at the sightings log or our website to check what’s being seen, scan the bookshelves, pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, or just browse around. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit us online www. BirdCapeMay.org, where birding Cape May is only a click away. Or give us a call, we do mail order as well. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Vice President of Natural History for New Jersey Audubon Society. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the Cape May Bird Observatory), he has written for virtually every birding publication and for the New York Times.

Beautiful books on wonderful subjects await at the CMBO
