The Police Blotter

TEQUESTA, FL: A resident of the 200 block of West Moccasin Trail called for help at 10:37am. She said a boy had been in a neighborhood tree for four days and she wasn’t sure whether he ever comes down. An officer discovered that it was just part of a tree that grew into a shape resembling a sitting boy. – Palm Beach Post

Learn Russian With Tanya

YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act as being extremely xenophobic. We at Exit Zero warmly embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and to this end offer a weekly lesson to help you communicate. Please note – the “Russian” we are printing is our phonetic interpretation, to make it easy to follow. Why did you come to America? Pochemu vy priehali v Ameriku? And, here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Potomu chto ia hotela zarabotat’ deneg. Pochemu zhe eshe? Which translates to: Because I wanted to make money. Why else? – Tanya Zotava

Weird Word Of The Week

Hoity-toity An old English phrase, still commonly used, which describes someone who is being pretentious and self-important.

A Picture From The Past

Don Pocher

FRANK Gurskey’s Sheldon boarding house started life as the Victorian-era private cottage of William Essen, who established the bakery now known as La Patisserie on the Washington Street Mall. Following Essen’s death in 1900, his son, William Jr moved into the cottage with his wife, Tryphene, and son, Willis. William passed away in the late 1930s and Tryphene remained in the cottage until she died, eight years later. The cottage is now Columbia House and is luxury suites. – Ben Miller

Random Fact Of The Week

THE US first issued paper currency in 1862 to make up for the shortage of coins and to finance the Civil War. There was a shortage of coins because people had started hoarding them – the uncertainty caused by the war had made the value of items fluctuate greatly.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Every person is the architect of his own fortune. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with beef negimaki and a selection of sushi. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

M

ARTHA Stewart is nationally known for her “good things”. I’ve become locally known for ranting about “bad things.” At least three people – okay, EXACTLY three people – recently suggested I should write something a little upbeat for once. Inspired by those anonymous sources (Phil Broder, John Cooke, Danielle Swift), I proudly present a column filled with good things in Cape May. Let’s begin with last Saturday’s Harborfest, which entertained 8,000 people with all sorts of water-related activities, plus some tried-andtested land-based pleasures such as drinking and eating. The aforementioned John Cooke emailed me to say, “Harbor Fest was a huge success. It was an example of what can happen when multiple organizations work closely together. The chamber, MAC and the Nature Center cooperated beautifully.” I witnessed another good thing last Thursday when I attended opening night of Cape May Stage’s new play, I Hate Hamlet. I’ve said before that I’m not as cultured as I’d like to be. I love the IDEA of compelling live theatre, important art openings, and majestic opera... and yet in truth I’m usually more satisfied with a great movie (or an episode of Mad Men – now THAT is art). And this is why you should listen to me when I tell you that I Hate Hamlet is pure pleasure. It’s a show with six actors performing at the peak of their powers, and it’s really, really funny. It’s ridiculous how Cape May Stage’s Artistic Director Roy Steinberg has managed to attract so many quality actors to this little town – we’re talking about people with serious Broadway and, gasp!, Hollywood credentials. I suspect he has a stash of brown envelopes containing compromising photographs. It’s the

only reason I can think of. Either that or he’s got a great reputation in the business as a producer and director of the highest quality. Anyway the show is selling out fast. Go see it. Seriously. I haven’t seen the new East Lynne Theater show, Emma Goldman: My Life, but our columnist Tom Sims gives it an excellent review in this issue (page 51). If, as Tom says, you like education to go hand in hand with entertainment, this show is for you. East Lynne’s Artistic Director, Gayle Stahlhuth, is one of the hardest-working, most dedicated and inspired people I’ve come across in my eight years in Cape May. Next up (shameless plug alert) is another really, really good thing: I want you to come and party with me and my colleagues and friends. On the rooftop of a five-story building overlooking the Atlantic Ocean on a balmy July evening. I want you to have a couple drinks on Exit Zero, some appetizers, and I want you to socialize with some of the finest people in town. I am referring to the launch party for the second edition of The First Resort, which shocked everyone (okay, it shocked us) when it sold all 4,000 copies within six months last year. We got so giddy we ordered anohter 7,000 (damn fools that we are). And we’d like to celebrate this fact

with a special party, which the folks at the Grand Hotel are hosting. They have a gorgeous rooftop garden, a secret they would like to start sharing with the world. And what better place to do that than an Exit Zero party. It will be held from 5pm to 9pm on Thursday, July 8 (the day after my 45th birthday). The author of The First Resort, Ben Miller, will be there to sign books. There will also be some entertainment and, as I mentioned, some complimentary drinks and food. As always, it is open to VIPs only and, as always, we regard every single, stinking damn one of you as a VIP. So come! The next good thing is the ad for the Merion Inn on page 31. I loved its creativity and attitude, and I just wanted to point it out and encourage all of our advertisers to try and inject some humor into their ads from time to time. Finally I want to mention an event this Saturday, June 26, because it involves two other really good things. The first is the organization that is hosting the event, Center for Community Arts, the second is the location, the whalers’ cottages on Batts Lane, on the north part of the island, which were beautifully restored by Dave and Chris Clemans (who also happen to be good things – the both of them). The event, An Evening at the Whaler’s Cottage, is from 6pm to 8:30pm and is $75 a ticket. Not so cheap, you say, but when I tell you the food and the wine are from the Washington Inn and that you get to eat and drink all this on the cottages’ enchanted gardens (and get to tour the cottages), I say it’s a good deal. I went last year – pure class, I tell you. That’s it, apart from one little postscript: The Hands Across the Sea environmental group are having a ceremony at the Cove this Saturday at noon. I hope that the person who said the city was going to charge beach tag fees to participants either heard wrong or was joking...

A Night On The Town

Bars, restaurants, culture and events... Dan Mathers’ weekly guide to what’s going on in Cape May

W

OW. They’re not bouncy,” remarked Kate Baker in reference to the fried calamari. “Bouncy?” I asked, “Do you mean chewy?” “No, bouncy,” she said, “more than chewy. You ever eat something that’s so chewy it makes your teeth bounce back? That’s bouncy.” She had a valid point: you can get fried calamari just about anywhere in this town. But, you might struggle to find it done as perfectly as Latitudes’, the restaurant that took the place of Copper Fish at the harbor bridge. The breading was light and crispy, the squid tender, and the sauce? Wow. It’s a sweet-and-spicy Thai chili sauce about which my only complaint can be that there was not enough. Jack Lindeman, my cousin and a local lifeguard, tried dipping the calamari in the table’s garlic humus when we ran out of the chili sauce, but it just wasn’t the same. That’s not to say the garlic humus wasn’t good. It was chock-full of garlic and served with these crispy, irresistible, pencil-thin breadsticks.

The real focus of our appetizers should be the Tuna Pizzetta. A pizzetta, as defined by our server Lia Antonicello, is “like a little, sliced, toasted pita thing with tuna on top.” I can see why Lia struggled to find the right words to describe it. The Tuna Pizzetta was thin slices of tuna, seared rare and encrusted in poppy seeds, topped with ginger, roe, tomatoes, peppers and scallions, over a seaweed salad. All of this fits on a small, triangular slice of pita and

is drizzled with “Japanese” sauce and a sort of creamy wasabi. It’s like a Japanese restaurant squeezed into two square inches. And that’s just the appetizers. Jack went with the tuna as an entrée, and it was just as good as the pizzetta. When asked if he wanted chopsticks to eat his tuna, Jack confidently replied, “No thanks. I’m not that cultured.” Jack would later use this phrase when asked if he’d like a glass for his beer. Tanya, my wife (that’s still strange to say), had the Crab Ravioli, and I pressed her for more of a description than, “It’s good.” Eventually she came up with, “It has a pleasant and unexpected sweetness.” That sweetness came, as Tanya remembered, from a bit of brown sugar. My sister-in-law Olga Zotava, who was unusually quiet, even chimed in. “The portions are really big,” she said, “I would even say huge.” So, five of us sat down, ordered five appetizers, five entrées and one dessert, and the final price was $157. If you don’t consider that price to be more than fair, you probably shouldn’t try to eat out in Cape May… or anywhere, really.

CAPE Mays parking meters suck. Many don’t even work right, the numbers get worn out and the whole system is confusing. Can’t we just go back to the old system. Or better yet, let the tourists park for free since almost all the businesses in Cape May rely on them. Sean Taylor Headlines New Art Show At SOMA

“Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” opens this Friday in downtown Cape May

HE latest show opens at SOMA NewArt Gallery this Friday. “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” is an exhibit featuring an alumnae group of friends from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Cape May artist Sean Taylor has invited three friends and fellow alum from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts to showcase their artwork along with his. This is Taylor’s third exhibit at SOMA Gallery and once again, he is sharing his quirky vision in this new body of must-see paintings. Current themes in his work include desire and sexual tension, hope and futility, nostalgia and childhood. By combining a subdued palette with this challenging imagery, Taylor captures a tone that gives insight to the humor and irony depicted in the work, a welcome interlude of a nostalgic yesteryear and a glimmer that perhaps we, too, will one day look back with a wry smile at “Life.” Sarah Hunter, an accomplished still life painter based out of Philadelphia was greatly influenced by early naturalist artists such as

rendered object and graphite drawn marks to create a world that is accepted as a snippet of a bigger place.” Alex Cohen’s fascination with the illustration of movement conveying action allows this Newtown, Pennsylvanian artist to paint images that can appear to move and be still at once, “a contradictory sense that is the sort of irrational experience that allows a painting to transcend its subject matter.” New York painter Matthew Farina uses his abstract vocabulary conjoining geometric tensions with an aesthetically minded approach to painterly color and mark-making. His work explores invented spaces held together by lush fragmented geometry. The Opening Night Artist Reception is this Friday, June 25, 6pm to 9pm. Light food and refreshments will be served and the public is welcome.

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover

I

An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz

’M PLEASED to report that my husband and I have learned a hard lesson from holiday weekends of the past and finally made our Fourth of July plans in a timely manner. Usually the exchange goes something along these lines – Andy: “When is (Memorial Day, Labor Day, Fourth of July, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s) this year?” Me: “It’s this weekend.” Andy: “Oh. That really snuck up on us. Should we go away? Can you call and make reservations? There must be spots still open, since it probably snuck up on everyone this year.” Usually the end result is a barrage of phone calls to our favorite spots, with me trying to negotiate a proper room and rate, and apologetically acknowledging that I know it is last minute but, “Can’t you possibly accommodate my every whim?” I also like to repeatedly hang up, consult with husband, and call back moments later trying to resume the conversation, only to find myself speaking to a different person. Our summer spot is Avondale by the Sea,

located at 609 Beach Avenue (1-800-6767030). I’ve been frequenting Avondale for years and it’s a fantastic beach hotel with an ocean view and Victorian-inspired rooms. Cape May lends itself to different vibes throughout the year, so during the summer I need to hear the sound of water lapping against the shore in order to capture the essence of the season (hence the beachfront hotel). Lazily we selected a first-floor room, but that might be due to my propensity to over-pack (I cannot predict what adventures

lay ahead, and I like to be prepared… with 30 different variations of flip-flop). If you haven’t already, you must experience the Fourth of July in Cape May. I’m usually not one for crowds, but last year we attended the Congress Hall All-American Picnic ($20 per person, $10 for kids) and had an amazing time! Every square inch of the lawn seemed to be covered with blankets and chairs, so arrive early to secure your grassy spot. It is the quintessential Fourth of July barbeque complete with great company, cold cocktails and spectacular fireworks (I donned a glow-in-the-dark necklace to be festive). This year we’ll be at the barbeque again, but we’re also entertaining taking the Cape May-Lewes Ferry to Delaware (you can check out the points of interest at www.cmlf.com, specifically the Tanger Outlets). There’s also been talk of seeing Eclipse (the 17-year old girl in me is a huge Twilight fan) at Frank Theatres in Rio Grande. If time allows, I’m sure I’ll engage in some foolhardy water sport that my husband will talk me into after my regiment of strawberry cosmopolitans. But we’ll see.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

HAVE always been good at earning money, and even better at spending it. That, plus my deep mistrust of banks, bankers, people who work in banks and oftentimes people who go into or even live near banks, means my financial situation has been and continues to be “fluid.” Of course, in the old days, when I ran short I merely rounded up some lads from the bars and vice dens of Old Cape May, caulked the hull of the “Fat Bob” and hoisted the Jolly Roger. We worked an easy percentage system: all takings were split evenly, then I took back 90 per cent of everyone else’s share at sword-point – much like the banks do these days. Of course, my fiscal dealings were not all conducted over the business end of a cannon – I was an early realtor, and purchased most of the Jersey Shore from those cheery Lenape Indians for a few hatchets and a wagonload of pox-infected blankets. Once again, I see a similarity with modern

bankers. And I did happen to find the long lost treasure of Captain Kidd, after he buried it here, never to return. Well, now I think about it, “find” is a stretch, as is “buried it” and “never to return”. I do believe I filled the rascal full of cheap whiskey and robbed him blind, setting him adrift naked in a small boat, lashed to the mast. I am not ALL bad, though – I smeared the devil in sunblock first.

I did forget where I buried the treasure, as you know, and after some centuries of digging holes in the beach and finding naught save seashells, a World War Two depth charge and a perfectly preserved flight of planes feared vanished in the Bermuda Triangle, I fear ’tis lost forever. I was also caught out a little in the recent financial meltdown. I confess I had invested some large sum in “hedge funds” on the advice of a mustachioed rogue who came down from the city to advise us country folks. I was scarcely listening but have always loved a hedge and have a five-acre privet maze in the grounds of the D’Catur Mansion, so I went along with it, only to be fleeced. Of course, the chap now resides in my basement, with his private parts linked to a car battery and a NASDAQ index, and whenever my portfolio falls a point he receives a charge to his parts that makes his ’stache smoke. It’s only fair, no? I mean, when I was a pirate I expected no mercy, either…

The Story Of One Very Special Woman

Y

“Emma Goldman: My Life” is reviewed by Tom Sims

OU’RE witnessing one of the greatest activists in history answer questions from phantom colleagues sitting next to you. She is a masterful speaker, answering questions with authority and ease. She’s passionate, insightful and, from her answers, you soon realize she is eternally pulling for those who are lacking an advocate. And that’s what you learn to love about her. She is Emma Goldman and she is captured wonderfully in the world premiere one-person play Emma Goldman: My Life, playing through July 10 at East Lynne Theater. The play takes us from Emma’s beginnings in the late 1800s, through a variety of love interests, to her start as an early campaigner for worker and women’s rights. We watch as she first arrives in the US (“We are all foreigners in this county”), moves from Rochester to New York City, where she falls for the city then for a fellow activist. Emma Goldman’s life was filled with glory, as she rose to prominence as a public speaker and activist, to tribulation, as she experienced her lover’s imprisonment and

Activist Emma Goldman is played superbly by Lorna Lable in East Lynne’s new production

then her own. She had her challenges with love as well and says “I could not submit to a love who insists that I must change.” But she did submit to the beauty of her world, insisting, “What is the point of a revolution if you don’t stop to smell the roses.” The play is performed by Lorna Lable, who is also the playwright. Lable is an accomplished actor for stage, TV, and film. She effortlessly draws you into the life of this remarkable

woman, and her words (much like that of the woman she portrays) are “passion-covered.” She delivers a performance that always keeps pace, always keeps in character. Karen Case Cook, the show’s director, is no doubt a major influence in ensuring that the performance is as intimate as it is informative. And the set was subtle, just enough to ensure that you’re brought into Emma’s world and are not distracted from this engaging life story. I’m always impressed that East Lynne Theater productions run education and entertainment side by side. Their shows consistently enlighten and amuse – a rare combination that results in an uplifting experience. Artistic Director Gayle Stahlhuth commissioned this play and is dedicated to revealing to us great figures who are often marginalized by history. As you plan your summer theater plans, don’t miss Emma Goldman. The show is running at the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street. Tickets are priced from $28 to $13. For more information and reservations, call (609) 884-5898 or visit www.eastlynnetheater.org.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady Do you have any suggestions for someone who is wresting with a life-changing decision? I’m thinking about opening my own business. I know it’s crazy in this economy, but I’m sure I can make it work. I’ve got a good job with benefits and it’s hard to walk away from that, but this is a lifelong dream and I feel like it’s now or never. Am I nuts to? – Nutsy Dear Nutsy If the Answer Lady was in charge of deciding who is nuts around here, most of the people in front of her in line at the supermarket or driving in her vicinity would be trapped in a net. Often when we question our motives it’s because we have not done our research. Do you have the temperament to be your own boss? Do you have enough money in the bank to support your family in the event your ven-

ture fails? Have you decided whether your business will offer discounts to advice columnists? These are all important considerations. If you are concerned about insurance and health benefits, give Millenium Administrators a call. They specialize in small business owners. Once practical matters are settled, go for it. No one is going to knock on your door offering you opportunities. You need to chase them down. Dear Answer Lady It’s my wife’s turn to pick a vacation spot,

and she’d like to visit Cape May. We’ve never been, but I’ve been doing some research online and found your website. It looks lovely, but I’m not much of a beachgoer – am I doomed to sit in my hotel room reading Exit Zero? – Paleface Dear Paleface My good man – surely there are worse fates? Have you actually read this publication, or have you been sidetracked by all the lovelies in bikinis scattered through its pages? Do you like art? We’ve got galleries. Do you like to eat? Our restaurants run the gamut from flip-flopfriendly to Zagat-rated. Coffee shops? Check. Theater-goer, are you? We have two top-notch theaters. Architecture junkie? We have stunning examples of Victoriana everywhere you look. Shopping? Check. Music and film festivals and full moon parties too. Bird-watching? Unparalleled. Fun and varied drinking establishments? Some of the best you’ll ever be carried out of. Spas or gyms if you’re so inclined, kayaking and kayaking and parasailing, too. The promenade or mall for walking and people-watching. My goodness – who has time for sitting on the beach?

Stitch by Stitch is headquarters for Cape May and Victorian cross stitch and needle work designs. No matter whether you are a novice or an expert, you will find project ideas and supplies to please you.

SOMA is an original art gallery in Cape May that features new art from up-and-coming artsist from the region.

It’s an exciting, fairly new women’s store brought to you sisters Jen and Julie, who also run the Victorious store.

Patricia is a self-taught artist who paints beautiful, realistic oils and watercolors that you’ll see on large posters, smaller prints and on postcards all over town.

Owner Pat Jackson has been designing jewelry since the 1970s and has had her shop since the 1980s. You won’t find anything synthetic or treated – just satisfaction.

Everywhere you look there are lovely surprises – a tea set from the 1920s, a cylinder from a turn-of-the-century Edison phonograph or a Wallce Nutting hand-colored photograph.

Chances are good that you won’t get past the front door without trying a piece of something delicious!

It’s the smallest shop on the mall, but it’s packed with beautiful things – Rolex watches, pearls, sapphires, porcelain vases, cut-glass and pocket watches to name a few.

There are more spices, oils, sauces, mustards, herbs, fresh coffees and salad dressing than you can shake a spoon at (they have those too!).

Tell Me A Little About What They Sell Here

Stitch by Stitch has a full service framing department where they can carefully block and mount your finished project.

Local Inn Keeper Harriett Sosson’s new show Reinventing the Romans is currently on display at SOMA.

You’ll find classy tops, dresses, denim, bottoms, linens, jewelery, handbags and shoes.

Patricia has painted some of the most inspiring buildings in historic Cape May and plenty of stunning, natural landscapes, too.

Pat Jackson takes a twist on the seashell souvenir with items like an 18k gold scallop-shell bracelet or a sterling silver conch-shell pendant.

You never know what you’re going to find here, so even if you don’t find something that tickles your fancy on your first visit, make sure to stop back again.

Their $1 frozen custard cones are back so go get that!

Mary Ann’s sells stunning estate and new jewelry featuring a large selection of traditional and fancy colored diamonds.

Among the gadgets available at Love The Cook are Hot Spots, silicone pads that act as trivets, hot pads and jar openers as well as providing the perfect surface for mixing bowls and cutting boards.

A Killer Read

A chilling and compelling new short story by Terry O’Brien (aka Cape May’s Stephen King)

Chapter 6: Best Sellers

« If you missed previous chapters of A Killer Read you can catch up online at www.exitzero.us.

’M NOT sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing, but when strange things start going down my mind seems to slow. One second I’m going a million beatsper-minute with that nasty reporter from Philadelphia breaking my balls about my PI business, the next I see the gun and everything stops. A man, looks to be about 50, denim jacket, short black hair. The jacket should have been a dead giveaway; it’s hotter than hell outside. When he reaches I see the butt of the silver gun tucked into his belt. He whips it out quick, like he’s practiced a lot. I yelled, “GUN!” But Tim DeMarco, as usual, was a step or three ahead of me and on the guy as I shouted. Still, two shots cracked out. There was nothing I could do to stop them so I did my best to try to limit the damage any third or fourth shot might bring. I threw myself left, knocked David McComsey down under the banquet table we were sitting at, then tried

A Killer Read ? From Page 77 to do the same to Sam Howard. Sam, however, outweighed me by about 100lbs so I succeeded only in knocking him sideways on his chair. Still, it got the job done; once he went sideways his momentum took him the rest of the way to the little stage we were on, got his head below sea level. I tried to keep him pinned down, he didn’t resist. I couldn’t see under the table because of the cloth, but I heard a scuffle from the front of the store where Tim was undoubtedly wrestling the gun from the crazy man with one hand while saving a baby with the other and keeping a rabid pit bull at bay with his left foot, Mr Wonderful. I took a quick glance around and saw that Lonegan was still standing dumbstruck on the far right side of the stage behind the podium. So I coiled myself like a cobra (I told myself) and sprung catlike (sure) across the stage and tackled him. He was pretty thick, not fat, but sturdy. I put some extra heave into my shoulder and drove my legs a little harder as I went into him. To be honest, it felt good to hit Lonegan. “Ouch!” he yelped as I knocked him from the stage to the floor to his ass. As we landed I heard a third shot, this one muffled. I heard Tim grunt. Not good. “Tim!” I jumped off Lonegan and ran to the front door where Tim struggled with the gunman. I tore the man off my friend and he spun to the ground. There Tim stood, a big splash of red smeared across his nice white T-shirt. He looked at me, face ashen, eyes weirdly unfocused, like he saw me but didn’t see me. “Tim!” I shook his shoulders. He snapped to. “Huh? oh. It’s okay, it’s not mine.” I felt him up like a guy getting to second base for the first time but found no source of the blood. Seems he was right. I turned to the second man on the ground. He was curled into a ball, hands covering the left side of his ribcage. A pool of blood began gath-

I went a little ashen. A weird pounding filled my ears and everything felt far away. Next thing I knew I felt myself falling. “I got you!” I heard Tim say and then I was in his arms. We must have looked like the cover of a gay bodice-ripper; the suave, handsome, long-haired pirate saving the virginal, hopeless, prince’s son from a fatal fall from a towering cliff and the bonedashing rocks below. After a few seconds my head cleared and I stood, trying not to look too embarrassed. We gave each other a quick nod and chuck on the arm. “Thanks,” we both said. “What the hell is going on?” Donal Lonegan asked in his thick Scottish burr. “Safe to say,” I said with a sense of mounting pride, “that you no longer have to worry about The Editor.” I didn’t realize until after I said it how cheesy it sounded. It only dawned on me after I heard the clicking of digital stills and the whirring of the two news cameras that were now trained on me. I felt like fainting again. Tim, never one to miss an opportunity to bust my stones, said, “Nice.” He then did the prudent thing and picked up the stillsmoking gun from the floor. To make it worse, Cathy Steltzer came bursting through and hugged me. “My God, Travis! That was amazing!” She smothered my face with kisses. Now, normally, the girl of my high school dreams kissing my

A Killer Read ? From Page 79 face would lead to altogether different feelings than the mortification I was feeling, but these were altogether different circumstances. I felt myself turning red as all eyes were on me. Not Tim, the actual hero, but me, the guy who just went around tackling everybody. Every face smiled at me, a few people even clapped, I was even starting to feel a little better when I caught Daryl Vance’s sourpuss mug, shaking her head and making some notes. She’d come from the Philadelphia Inquirer. She saw right through me. A fraud. Still, all in all, a pretty good day’s work; the plan, MY plan, working to perfection, the killer revealing himself and no one getting hurt aside from the nutbar in question, and I got the girl. Pretty good day. The Case of the Editor, all wrapped up nice and neat. “It’s not him,” I heard Lonegan say as Cathy worked her teeth across my neck. “Pardon?” I asked, pushing Cathy away without realizing. Lonegan repeated, “It’s not him.” He and Tim DeMarco were kneeling at the man’s side, trying to stem the bleeding from his side. There they were, trying to save him while I stood like an action hero dork basking in his own glory. I knelt down with them. I asked, “How do you know?” “Good question,” Tim said. “Because I know this man,” Lonegan answered. “He’s no serial killer. This is Lou Mandich. I wrote an expose on his father two summers ago. He worked for the city prosecutor’s office and used it to front a drug ring, offering sweetheart plea deals in exchange for a cut of the profits. Pretty small potatoes compared with the real bad stuff going on.” “But?” I asked. “But John Mandich, county prosecutor and pillar of the community, didn’t think it very small potatoes. Just before warrants came down he went into his attic and hung himself. His suicide

Page 81

note copped to all of it. Lou here is his son.” Tim said, “But this guy must be 50, 55.” Lonegan shrugged. “The old man was 80 when he did himself in. He just got old, doesn’t mean you lose your taste for cash and women.” “Guess not,” I agreed. “The son, Lou… this guy, he swore revenge on me, started writing letters a year ago.” Tim asked, “Cops couldn’t grab him?” Lonegan pressed a fresh batch of paper towels over the man’s wounds, but it looked to be too late. “He was very careful with his wording. Remember, his father was a lawyer, he knew his way around a sentence.” Tim said, “Isn’t that great.” I played pragmatic. “Eh, wouldn’t be any fun if it was this easy.” Just then an EMT crew arrived and ordered us out of the way. Right behind them were the CMPD, officers Genaro and Austin in the lead. My friends on the force. Once they saw me through the window they gave a look that said, “Aw jeez, this guy again?” along with some pretty emphatic head shakes. It made me feel, in an instant, like they weren’t my friends at all, never had been, but were the cool kids in high school who tolerated my nerdy presence because they needed something from me. Seemed my effusive praise of them in the press after Dead & Breakfast only bought me a degree of cooperation, not real kinship. I had no reason to expect them all to start suddenly thinking of me as this great guy, but… I thought they had. This stabbed at me deeply and I didn’t know why. Yes. Yes I did. I was never a guy with a lot of friends, even growing up. The kids who hung out with me were those who themselves had no one to hang out with. There were no common goals or hobbies; we just hung out wherever after school – arcade, drug store, someone’s

MOLLY and her sister KATIE came to the Shelter when their owner passed away. They are happy and outgoing but accustomed to a quiet home. Because Katie and Molly are sisters and are so bonded to one another they MUST go to a home together. They are indoor dogs but go out to use the vathhroom. One of the girls weighs fourteen pounds and the other is thirteen. Small children may be too rambunctious. Come meet them.

ROCKY is a one-year-old guy who is a little nervous at first but once he gets to know you he warms up nicely and is very sweet. Once comfortable Rocky enjoys affection. He did pretty well on his temperment test, but he really doesn’t like lots of physical manipulation, so he must go to a home with children over the age of 13. He will need some training and plenty of exercise as he is still just a young guy. Adoption fee is $95.

WAWA is a very lovable 9-10-year-old poddle/bichon mix who does not act his age. Sadly he was found in a Wawa parking lot and his owner has not come to claim him. He was a little shy when he first arrived at the shelter, but since then he has warmed up into sweetest pal you could hope for. He likes being picked up, pet and handled, and knows a few basic commands. All he needs is a home and the attention he deserves. Adoption fee is $35.

Cape Curiosity

A weekly historical column by Ben Miller, author of the best-selling “The First Resort”

T

HE Inn of Cape May is one of the city’s oldest hotels, having been constructed in 1894. It was built by William Church, a contractor from West Cape May. Church worked on properties throughout the city during the building boom that followed the 1878 fire. He recognized the success others were having with their new hotels and boarding houses, so he decided to go into business for himself. Church selected a property Ocean Street near Beach Drive, due to its proximity to the popular Star Villa across the street. The land had previously been home to two private cottages that were lost in the fire. Sitting between the property and Beach Drive were the bath houses owned by John Bullitt. The Inn of Cape May began life as a fourstory boarding house known as the Colonial. Church’s Colonial was one of the largest boarding houses in Cape May, with 60 guest rooms and the ability to house 135 people. It was also one of the most technologically advanced,

The Colonial also offered an elevator, installed shortly after the hotel opened, an amenity that few others offered at the time. That original elevator is still in use today. Visitors need to ask the front desk for assistance, since it has not been modernized and still requires an attendant to operate it. Church hung up his carpenter’s square and assumed the role of innkeeper at the Colonial, one he would hold into the early 1900s when he hired a full-time manager. Prior to his retirement, Church added a large wing in 1905, extending the hotel towards the ocean and doubling the number of available rooms. A Philadelphia Inquirer article from 1914 reported, “With the advent of June, Cape May is rapidly putting on her accustomed summer appearance… The Colonial Hotel under the management of John H. Coleman opened for the season on Thursday with an unusually large number of guests.” In 1927, Church sold the property to Ray Fite, who later turned the reigns over to his

Following a nor’easter in 1962 that severely damaged the Star Villa, it was moved to a new site up the road and the land was transformed into a parking lot for Colonial guests. John Bullitt’s bathhouses, which had been

sold to William Church in the hotel’s early years, were also removed by the Fite family. Some have been saved, including one that was moved to the Winchester restaurant property (now Elaine’s Dinner Theater) and converted into a gift shop. A swimming pool was built on the western side of the bathhouse grounds and a modern motel was added on the eastern side.

Activity Of The Week

T

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Prepare the pooch for vacation

HERE is nothing like 80 pounds of unhappy dog to spark a canine health kick. Good-natured Annie had the “Cape May Crud,” which Dr Mark Logan of Baysea Veterinary Hospital says is the “slang term for the re-occurring dermatitis seen in a percentage of the dog population in lower Cape May County.” (Coast Guard recruits – humans - are apparently subject to a different, and even more miserable, Cape May Crud.) To help spare your dog any health problems on your trip to the Jersey Cape, we asked Dr Logan for some tips. If you spend a great deal of time in the area, you should have a relationship with a local vet. But even if you are down for a week, bring a summary of your pet’s recent vet visits in case he needs to be seen while on vacation. Dr Logan advises bringing water from home “if at all possible. A change in the water made available for your dog may trigger digestive problems. If you are considering using bottled water while on vacation, choose distilled water” over mineral water. Stick to

routine food, and keep the dog away from the barbecue. If your dog sleeps in a crate, bring it on vacation so that your dog feels safe. Always rinse your dog after swimming. “Shampoo is not necessary,” according to Dr Logan, “just plenty of cool, fresh water.” And while all dogs can probably swim, Dr Logan cautions that “some cannot swim far or for very long. Dogs should always be monitored when in the water, just as children are best

watched continuously.” Keep your dog on a leash to reduce his or her chances of being hurt in unfamiliar surroundings. A microchip is useful if your dog runs off. Keep your information up to date. Some dogs (and cats) are at risk for sunburn, like dogs with “thin, short haircoats” and “animals with white fur and pink unhaired skin.” Avoid overdoing the activity in the heat. Don’t extend your dog’s playtime. Dr Logan is clear on the most dangerous threat to dogs in the summer. “It’s the OWNER’S CAR. At home or on vacation, leave your dog at the HOUSE! The risk is too great for death and neurological damage if your dog overheats while you wait for the barrista. Leave him in his comfy crate at the vacation house, cooling away in the AC.” Cape May is a great place to vacation with the family dog. Well-behaved dogs are even welcome to lunch on the patio at places like Zoe’s. Just plan ahead to be sure your dog enjoys the trip as much as you do. Next week: Go Fish!

The Movie Column

I

“Toy Story 3” reviewed by Andrew Henry

T IS common knowledge that film sequels rarely top the original. The characters seem tired, the story is re-hashed, and the filmmakers jam too many special effects together to over-compensate for their lackluster film. And a third movie in a trilogy? Should I mention Godfather 3? Or Spiderman 3? However, these rules do not seem to apply to films from the Pixar Studios – specifically their latest offering, Toy Story 3. The original Toy Story was released in 1995 to rave reviews, both by critics and audiences. It was the first feature-length computer-animated film – it could be considered the grandfather to Shrek, Ice Age, and any other computer-animated film that has come out over the past 15 years. In 1999, Toy Story 2 was released, which managed to top the original in terms of story, and again received praises across the board. Toy Story 3 opens with Andy, the owner of the toys, preparing to go off to college. It has been a few years since our toy heroes – Woody, Buzz, Slinky Dog, Rex and Mr.

“Toy Story 3” is the best of a great bunch!

Potato Head – have had proper playtime with Andy. But hope is not lost, as the toys wind up in Sunny Side Day Care, where new children are ready to play. The toys are excited that they will be able to bring children joy again in a nice, relaxing environment. Or is it? What makes Toy Story 3 work so well (outside of the humor, the story, the amazing visuals) is that the heart of this film contains a very adult theme. What happens to toys when their owner grows up? Yes,

children will love seeing their favorite toys’ adventures, but adults will be able to relate to the toys emotional experience. Similar to children growing up, flying the nest and leaving their parents – the toys have to deal with Andy growing up and no longer needing them in his life. The conclusion is bittersweet, but the journey is amazing. Second opinion from Tom Sims: Sure, there are fewer toys in the toy box this time around, but you love them all. You’re inspired by Woody’s loyalty, impressed by Buzz’s courage, charmed by Jesse’s spirit. These are characters you can believe. Don’t be fooled by what may seem like greener grass, embrace life’s changes, and be true to the people you love (and sometimes to those who may not be so lovable). These are the themes in Toy Story 3 that make the film truly amazing. And its storyline is never juvenile despite the fact that all the kids enjoy the film just as much as the adults – and that’s what makes it a masterpiece. There have been a lot of great trilogies in film – this one tops them all.

UR new hit show, I Hate Hamlet, continues to wow audiences – and now the Second Stage Series has brought Come What May to satisfy the audience’s taste for programs related to our sold-out Hamlet show! On Monday, June 28 at 8pm Come What May will delight theater-goers of all ages. This is a play about the life and times of the world’s greatest playwright, William Shakespeare. Funny and poignant, Come What May follows the young Will Shakespeare from his comfortable country life in Stratford to the bustling, dark and sordid city of London and the cut-throat world of the Elizabethan Theatre. This 80-minute play is performed by two actors, father and son, both named Joe Plummer, who take turns portraying Will and a host of other colorful characters from his life and his plays, revealing a side of Shakespeare you’ve never seen! See Come What May on Monday and enjoy I Hate Hamlet with new eyes on Tuesday! It is all about laughter even as you become better educated about the Bard! Coming up is the first of our Broadway Series at the Second Stage. Two-time Emmy nominee James Reynolds joins internationally acclaimed actress Lissa Layng in an unpublished play by Oliver Hailey called And Where She Stops Nobody Knows. Bird Droppings

I

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

’VE STOPPED watching the news. The sight of another Brown Pelican mired in killing goo is going to turn me into a jumper. I just know it. Ironic, isn’t it? For years I’ve plopped myself down in front of the tube and been treated nightly to the sight of car bomb victims in Kabul and Baghdad markets, but I’ve learned to take it in sad stride. I stared in horror at the footage from the Columbine massacre. But I stared. I watched in disbelief as the towers fell. But I watched. Then I see a moribund pelican cooking in oil under a Louisiana sun. Get angry beyond expression, sad beyond remorse and reach for the remote. Fix a drink. Stare into the amber and feel despondent. Hopeless. Maybe it’s the scope of the disaster. Maybe it’s the senselessness. Maybe it’s the suffering inflicted on living things whose only fault is sharing a planet with the likes of us. So, are you feeling bad yet? Well,

brighten up. I’ve got some good news for you. You can go outside. Stroll down the beaches of South Cape May. You’ll see plenty of birds. Least Terns. Piping Plovers. The first of the migrating shorebirds. Assorted gulls and terns. All healthy. All thriving. None oiled. You are enjoying an environment as healthy and natural as natural can be. This didn’t happen by accident. Only

accidents happen by accident. If your feet are planted in New Jersey and you are at oilfree beaches, natural tidal wetlands, thriving dune forests, environmentally rich pine barrens habitat – all the great natural habitats that are housed on the Cape May peninsula – you are looking at the handiwork of scores, even hundreds, of people in government agencies and non-governmental organizations who have worked for decades to keep Cape May’s environment open, lush, and healthy. You are looking at the efforts of conservationists. You have them to thank. Conservationists? You know. Those funny people who are always getting into a lather about saving this or protecting that and generally making a nuisance of themselves whenever anyone wants to do something that will “boost the economy” or “provide jobs” or “increase ratables” or enhance our “quality of life” by taking a natural area and building something on it.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 125 Take The Nature Conservancy Preserve at South Cape May – 30 years ago, there were plans to put condos there. Take the marshes behind Wildwood, Stone Harbor, Avalon. State regulations keep them from being turned into lagoon communities. Take the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge – piece by purchased piece, it’s preserving the natural core of the Cape May peninsula. As for oil-free beaches, you can thank your lucky starfish that there is a lot of vigilance and diligence that goes into monitoring tanker traffic in the Delaware Bay, the second most heavily trafficked petroleum shipping corridor in the United States. Feeling better? Good. Now turn those good feelings, and your good fortune, into good actions. Open your wallet or checkbook. Become one of those funny people who care by investing a bit of underwriting care in the future. What I want you to do is find a good, solid environmental organization sporting a good, long track record and help them safeguard the future with your support now. What’s done in the Gulf of Mexico is done. Sorry. Can’t change it. The way to redress the calamity is to help safeguard the future. You say you know less about good conservation prospects than you know about stock options? Stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory. We’re part of an organization that’s been protecting New Jersey’s environment for over 100 years. We’re not above insider trading. Not when it comes to a good cause. And what’s a better cause than a Cape May you want to come back to. The Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place for anything to do with nature. The

CMBO (609-884-2736) is located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point and is open 9:30am to 4:30pm every day. If you have any questions at all, ask any of our staff or volunteers – they are always glad to help with anything you need – even things you didn’t know you needed yet. While there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, the latest in books, bird feeders, and some great new and fun merchandise – including our exclusive CMBO logo jewelry, clothing, totes, and more. Take a look at the sightings log or our website to check what’s being seen. Scan the bookshelves, pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, or just browse around. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit us online www.BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away. Or give us a call. We do mail order as well. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Vice President of Natural History for New Jersey Audubon Society. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the Cape May Bird Observatory), he has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The CMBO... an oasis in troubled times – come visit them!

Real Estate Rewind

H

Report from the wonderful world of Cape May property... by Chris Bezaire

ERE we are again getting ready for another summer season in Cape May. Wait... that’s right, this is my first article in a year and a half. Seems like I never left. Did you miss me? That’s okay, you didn’t hurt my feelings. Anyway, back to the real estate. May was similar to the previous few months – slow, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel. We had a lot more buyers snooping around, and I think things are starting to get back to normal – whatever that is. There were 11 properties sold in the Cape, ranging from $125,000 for a lot (actually, not a whole lot!) listed by the Coastal Marketing Group, aka Brian Groetsch and Chris Rothwell and sold by Kelly Herbst of By the Sea Realty, to $750,000 for a condo at the Sandpiper, listed by Heather Turner of Jersey Cape and sold by an agent in Wildwood. (This is a Cape May magazine, we don’t name outsiders.) Some other highlights – 1204 New York, listed by Becky Chamberlain of Coastline Realty, was sold for $750,000 by Steve Cluff of Coldwell Banker Sol Needles Agency (great office!). We also had some action in Cape May

Point with 701 Cape Avenue listed by Andy Moffat of Chris Clemans Sotheby’s and sold by Kim Dellas of the Dellas Agency for $584,500. Finally we had 422 and 424 Green Street sold to the same buyer. Listed by Jan Conwell of Homestead Real Estate, these were sold by Henry Lanzalotti of Jersey Cape for $170,000 and $140,000 respectively. Now on to the tips section. Usually I have something for the buyers, sellers, or renters. But I would rather take a minute for reflection and looking forward. In the past eight years we have seen a market unlike any other. Amid huge property value increases, and subsequent decreases, it seems we never take the chance to realize how special this town is. It is only when forced to be somewhere else, or when we leave,

that we realize we didn’t appreciate how good it really is. As a local I can’t tell you the last time I took a carriage ride through town, rented a surrey (yes the ones we make up point systems for if you hit one with your car), or gone on a tour of the Victorian houses (although I have been in pretty much all of them). All of these things are what bring people to Cape May and are what summertime relaxation is all about. So my tip for today – if you are lucky enough to be reading this article, that means you are lucky enough to enjoy this town on some scale. Go out and enjoy the fact that you are here, walk the boardwalk, have a drink during sunset, or go play a game of miniature golf. You will regret that you didn’t when you had the chance! Here’s one last tip: Make sure to pick up the next special color edition of Exit Zero, out on June 25. I hear there is a big article on the state of real estate in Cape May by some agent/writer guy. Chris Bezaire is a fifth-generation realtor with Coldwell Banker Sol Needles Real Estate. You can find him at www.CapeMayChris.com; email chris@capemaychris.com; or type in Cape May Chris on Facebook and Twitter.
