The Police Blotter

Every week we feature quirky police reports from small towns across America. Found on the website www.smalltownmisfit.com. LAKE OSWEGO, OR – A woman identified only as Ruth called police to say she was “stuck in a hole,” according to a police report. Police found she was stuck between a couch and chair and helped her out. – Lake Oswego Review

Learn Russian With Tanya

YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act. We at Exit Zero warmly embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and offer a weekly lesson to help you communicate. Please note – the “Russian” we are printing is just our phonetic interpretation. Why did the Roman Empire never conquer Russia? Pochemu rimliane nikogda ne pytalis zavoevat Rossiu? Here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Vo-pervuh Rossii togda dazhe ne sushestvovalo. Mozhet byt oni ostavili etu territoriu dlia varvorov. Which translates to: First of all, Russia didn’t exist back then. Maybe they left that territory for the Huns. – Tanya Zotava

Weird Word Of The Week

Arenaceous A useful word for people at the beach, this word refers to something that has a very sand-like texture or appearance.

A Picture From The Past

Ben Miller

THIS is the Cape May beach I remember growing up! Prior to the dunes being constructed and the beginning of beach replenishment in the 1990s, there was a three to five-foot drop-off from the promenade to the beach. The height of that drop-off depended on the specific beach. This picture was taken on the Ocean Street Beach in the late 1960s. Notice Frank’s Playland and the original Hotel Lafayette in the background. – Ben Miller

Facebook Mystery Contest

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, taken by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know what trendy little clothing store this is, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Random Fact Of The Week

IN ANCIENT Greece only wealthy boys attended school. To ensure that each of them made the best of their education, they were accompanied to school by a paedogogus – a slave whose job it was to make sure the boy attended class and paid attention.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J We all have extraordinary coded within us, waiting to be released. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a dish of fried wontons, and sweet and sour chicken. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

L

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

AST Thursday, the Exit Zero team was lucky enough to score seats to the opening night of Cape May Stage’s production of Topdog/Underdog. The entrance was crowded with patrons buzzing about the production, eagerly proffering their tickets and collecting their programs. Artistic Director Roy Steinberg welcomed us inside and promised an excellent show; something that would appeal to younger theater-goers. “For one thing,” he said, “it was written in this century.” Topdog/Underdog does feel very immediate and relevant. Even the set design felt very 2010 – McDonald’s take-out and copies of Sports Illustrated: Swimsuit Edition decorated the dingy one-room apartment onstage. Having done our homework, we already knew the script was brilliant. We aren’t the only ones who think so – the Pulitzer Prize Committee agrees. Playwright Suzan-Lori Parks constructs a riveting story of two African-American brothers, Lincoln and Booth, as they try to navigate life “in the third world” in America today. The language is sharp, current, often explicit and exactly on the mark. But a script will only take you so far. Actors Jed Reynolds and Stephen Rider take the play from page to stage with great skill. This could be the result of the show’s previous run in LA, but it’s more likely a testament to their great talent. Reynolds plays Lincoln, a little world-weary and selfconscious: like any older brother, he carries the weight of responsibility and must play the straight man to Booth’s antics. Rider, for his part, makes Booth a highly-combustible schemer who is better at “boosting”

(stealing) goods than sweet-talking girls. The audience was receptive to the production – sometimes laughing heartily, sometimes exhaling in shock. By the time the show reached its gut-twisting climax, we had trouble shaking off emotion and rallying ourselves to applaud. Satisfied and shaken, the audience, cast and crew relocated to Carney’s Other Room for food and stiff, restorative drinks. The actors entered the restaurant to a round of applause. Over drinks we met Reynolds and Rider, who are as friendly and articulate off stage as they are dynamic on it. Topdog/Underdog grabs your attention and gets you thinking. It runs through October 23, so don’t miss your chance to see this piece of epic theatre. THERE is only a small minority of people in and around Cape May who don’t love crabs – and even fewer that don’t love beer. That’s why it is no surprise that the C-View’s Crab-A-Palooza was such a big hit. The event was running from 1-7pm, and although we only made it out there just after 4pm, the party was still kicking and

³

we had to wait for space at one of the big, brown paper-covered tables. The event was also easy on the wallet: $30 got you a dozen crabs and an additional $8 added a pitcher of Miller Lite or Pabst Blue Ribbon. The crabs were of an excellent size and quality. We would have classified just about every crab on our plate as being “large.” And, as we were handed our plate Dave Hassler said, “There was one small one in there, so I gave you an extra to make up for it.” Dave Hassler and Dave Tilton both deserve credit for cooking up some great crabs. It’s events like this that make the fall such a great time to be in Cape May. SPEAKING of events that make Cape May great, this coming weekend is the debut of Cape May Forum: Chautauqua at the Shore. There are more than 30 events happening in and around Cape May, but the central focus of the Forum is four presentations given by experts on the subject of how humor shapes our world. In addition, there will be a comedy club and barbeque on Sunday night at the Rusty Nail. For a complete list of events, make sure to check out our guide starting on page 27. THE one disappointment of this week was missing the Cape May Renaissance Festival. After a busy Saturday, Sunday had been reserved for the festival, so we made an effort to brave the weather. Sadly it seems that the rain got the better of the Rennaisance and f looded out Queen Elizabeth’s court. But, rumor has it that there could be wine from Willow Creek Winery (where the event was held) available at next year’s festival. We doubt even a hurricane could keep us from that. Until next week...

Alternative Proposal For The New Cape May Convention Hall

«

WE OFTEN forget that there is a genuine difference between appearing majestic and actually being classy and grand. With this in mind, “Exit Zero” commissioned WRM Architecture to design a building that could look like a fitting convention hall for Cape May but cost only a fraction of the price – effectively saving taxpayers an entire $50 a year. At right is the front view of the building with its grand entryway – it certainly looks the part. Below is the reverse side of this facade, the actual building in which small events can be held... using just one bench from the promenade.

THE ABOVE DESIGNS ARE THE INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OF WRM ARCHITECTURE

Definitely not just your grandmother’s tearoom! Sure, you’ll find tasty tea sandwiches, freshly-baked scones and teabreads served with clotted cream, and that traditional, elegant service that you associate with fine dining. But there is so much more to The Carriage House. In addition to our traditional Tea Luncheon and Afternoon Tea, The Carriage House offers hearty fare from the café menu, plus homemade soups, and hearty wholesome entrée salads that fill you up while still letting you feel virtuous for eating a salad.

So try it today, and bring grandmom along, too…. She’ll love you for it!

And Yet Another Proposal For The New Convention Hall

«

IN TIMES of economic decline we all want to keep a close watch on our budget, so our number one priority for Cape May’s new convention hall should be cost. The key is to not only develop a structure that is cheap to build but to create a building with little to no cost for upkeep. Our artists drew inspiration from the homes of the deep, deep South. These buildings can be assembled from scrap and due to the overall lack of pride in its appearance, you won’t feel compelled to keep it clean, safe or sturdy. Below is the initial concept and at right you’ll see an artist’s detailed rendition.

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

Y THE end of the season, I’m sick of talking to diners. I’m sick of explaining the menu, commenting on the weather, and, most of all, discussing my life. Yes, I live here. Yes, all year round. Yes, really. I grow tired of hearing about my own future plans. Table after table asks what I want to be when I “grow up,” so I start inventing things, annoyed that anyone could be so intrusive. Perhaps I’ll build desks for needy Peruvian school children. Perhaps I’ll rescue endangered sea turtles in Guatemala, or guide bamboo rafting trips in Chiang Mai. I might be a mailorder bride, a professional wrestler, a harvester of black pearls. For fear of telling a guest that my true calling is something like exotic belly dancing, I keep my mouth shut. I become anti-social, anti-small talk. Then September hits. I go from claustrophobic in an overcrowded dining room, to lonely and longing for company. All of the sudden I’m starved for social interaction. When people finally do come in to eat,

I’m all over them, hawk-like, for the duration of the meal. “I’ll have the beef,” says the guy at table seven. “Well of course I’d love to tell you about my second cousin’s wedding,” I reply. I overhear bits and pieces of conversation as I refill water glasses, and I can’t help but interject. “Oh, you don’t want to see that movie,” I say, or, “I read that book, too!” Suddenly, I’m eavesdropping with the same enthusiasm with which I used to read my big sister’s diary. “For crying out loud,” I say to the ladies at table two, “When are you going to dump that loser, Cheryl?” In between polishing glassware and detailing this sparsely-filled dining room,

I find myself missing the chatty summer crowds. That pervert in the corner who put his hand on my thigh every time he ordered a martini, he wasn’t so bad; he just liked me, he really liked me! And why did I roll my eyes every time his wife barked an order? She was just trying to talk! On really slow nights, I confide in the Spanish-speaking dishwasher. “I just feel,” I find myself saying, “like I need to date a man who is emotionally available, you know? Somebody who will appreciate me for me.” “Si,” Roberto says, shoving a rack of dirty coffee mugs my way. Finally, feeling as though I might explode with unrequited conversation, I wait on a couple who is anxious to chat. I eagerly fill their glasses as they ask me about my life, my plans for the future. “Do you live here?” they ask. “Yes!” I tell them, “All year round! And you know, I don’t really want to be a professional wrestler.” The couple smiles – kind, interested smiles – and suddenly, I’ve got all the gratuity I need.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

DO lament the fact that a gentleman cannot these days oil himself and go for a stroll in all of his naked, muscular glory without people pointing and whispering. In the old days, when Greek and then Roman culture were at their peaks, it was the done thing, and a fellow might spend a good few hours preparing for his evening stroll, braiding his hair, applying some tasteful eye makeup and doing a few hundred pushups to get pumped, before having the manservants oil him thoroughly. Oh, how the ladies and gents used to admire us as we f lexed, strutted and posed around town. I myself was the inspiration for Spartacus (the original Stan Kubrick version, not the gauche TV version). Not for the main character, I should stress, but for the late lamented Tony Curtis’ character, and the infamous bath scene. Of course in these days I was a younger man, and my washboard abs were the talk of high society. While the movie was filming (I was a consultant) I remember having an abs-off with Burt Lancaster – both

of us breathing in and holding the pose, our stomachs glistening like two boxes of glazed hard-boiled eggs. In the end, he lost, but not for lack of trying: he passed out and toppled over sideways, still f lexing. I confess it was a hard victory and I burst a blood vessel in my head from lack of air, but with Burt, the winning was all, and he never challenged me again. I also was instrumental in the movie Ben Hur, though I considered Charlton to be a bit of a blowhard. I was his stunt double

for the famous chariot race, of course: he was worried that the loss of a limb or two might impede his movie career. In the event, he was quite right, and it was rather dangerous. I was trampled under the hooves of 30 horses, and then f lipped in the air from a tumbling chariot, landing some few hundred yards away before being hurried off to the hospital. The edit shows none of that, and is a cinematic masterpiece. So you can imagine my rage when, watching the final cut from my hospital bed, I saw no mention of my name in the credits. Charlton’s fans demanded he receive recognition for every stunt, my agent explained, as I spat grape seeds at the TV screen (the grapes were a gift from Charlton, who thought it very amusing that with both arms in casts I could not remove the seeds easily). I would love a return to those days, when a man was free to be a man without fear of ridicule or improper accusations when he chose to wrestle a fellow to the ground, clad only in a tiny loincloth, or nothing at all. Perhaps I will start a revival.

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover

T

An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz

HERE’S something about October — the weather, the sky, the colors, the foliage — that’s spellbinding. It’s almost tragic that it’s so short-lived. I adore the gray sky contrasting with the gold, red, and yellow foliage. I love the cooler air, jackets, corduroy, pumpkins, ghost stories, apple picking, and harvest time. It’s a month best spent in Cape May. Seven years ago, my mother and I started visiting Cape May in October, having no idea what to expect. Our previous experience involved June trips complete with warm weather and a general seaside crush. Fast forward a couple of months to autumn and the town exhales a sigh of relief. Parking becomes manageable, restaurants are alive but the wait to be seated is not daunting, the shops offer many discounts, and the mood has shifted. The once open and airy seaside Victorian homes take on a darker, spookier ambiance (even without the Halloween décor). There are so many reasons to take a trip to Cape May during the autumn

months. A new event, Halloween Horror at the Physick Estate, has you face-to-face with the restless souls wandering the halls of the famed mansion. Enjoy this experience with your guide on Fridays, October 1 and 8, Saturdays, October 2 and 9, and Wednesdays October 6 and 13 (beginning at 6:45 and 8:30pm). On my sixth wedding anniversary, October 23, you can join Craig McManus (psychic medium and ghost investigator) on a MAC trolley ride to the Cape May Lighthouse as he recants

his haunted findings. Ascend the darkened staircase of the lighthouse or stand idly exposed near the bottom. Choose wisely… For a less eerie activity, mark your calendar for the Harvest Festival Crafts and Antiques Show on October 16 from 10am on the lawn of the Physick Estate. The event that really sparks my interest is the Looking Glass Mystery Weekend “Cape May’s War of the Worlds” (October 29 and 30) where you look for clues to solve very unusual crimes. There’s also a recreation of the famous 1938 radio “invasion” and prizes for the best-dressed Martians and Earthlings. The Bedford Inn, The Carroll Villa, and The Queen Victoria Bed & Breakfast are all participating There is also the Halloween Parade on October 24, commencing at Rotary Park. The parade ends at the Physick Estate (the hub for all spooky October activities) where the Halloween Party starts at 4pm. Then on October 31, take your little ones trick-ortreating on Washington Street Mall from 2-5pm for some goodies. Happy Haunting in October!

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I read with interest your column last week about the woman who is overly attached to her cell phone. Not only do I not own a cell phone, I only use email at work, and I am not on Facebook. What do I say to well-meaning friends who continuously berate me for not being a part of the Facebook frenzy? – Happily Unplugged Dear Unplugged The Answer Lady can relate, since she was dragged onto Facebook kicking and screaming. Certainly there are those who use Facebook to post each and every daily event or f leeting thought, no matter how mundane, i.e. – “just dropped Little Suzy off at day-care with Cheerios stuck to her dress – LOL!” This is not for the Answer Lady – she is quite convinced that the world does not need to know what is on

her mind every second of the day. On the other hand, she has been able to reconnect with old friends and has seen the website utilized in such smart ways as the following – ‘two tickets to the Phillies tonight – can’t use – first phone call takes them.’ She has a Facebook friend who never fails to randomly post a link to an old, rare video of a great song, which has saved the Answer Lady from despair after a stressful day more than once. She has also been able to see photos posted from trips taken or parties she has

MaryAnn’s CONTEMPORARY & ESTATE JEWELRY

been unable to attend. And let us not forget our friends at Exit Zero, who use Facebook not only to keep us informed of upcoming events but to give away cool prizes. There are plenty of privacy safeguards available, so if you want to remain un-pestered, you certainly have that option, and you don’t have to post anything, ever. So at least check it out – who knows who may be looking for you? Dear Answer Lady I recently attended a local theater production, and we were asked to turn off cell phones and refrain from recording the production. Well, you guessed it – the woman sitting next to me took pictures with her phone several times! I wanted to punch her in the face – have you ever heard of anything so uncivilized? – Indignant Dear Indignant The only thing the Answer Lady can think of that is less civilized than taking pictures at the theater would have to be punching someone in the face at the theater. For goodness sake, dear – get a hold of yourself (and an usher, next time).

Activity Of The Week

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum

L

OOKING for something to do on a rainy day in Cape May? The Naval Air Station Aviation Museum, located at the Cape May County airport, is a great suggestion. Many, many people think it’s a great suggestion, so if you go on a rainy day, you will have LOTS of company. If you really want to soak up the World War II history, make the trip in the sunshine. The museum was created to honor the 42 airmen who died while serving at the Naval Air Station Wildwood during World War II. NAS Wildwood served as a training facility for pilots from 1943 to 1945. It was originally called the Naval Air Station Rio Grande, but the name was changed to avoid confusion. Hangar #1 is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it houses airplanes with great names like Avenger, Helldiver, and Dauntless. On some, you can climb right into the pilot’s seat. This is a hands-on museum with something for everyone. In addition to the aircraft exhibits, there are glimpses into life on the home front with period music, pop

culture and furniture. You can test your eyes with a series of optical illusions, pretend to signal your fellow airmen on World War IIera radio equipment, and learn the science behind flight. Measure yourself against a giant engine, sit in a coast guard rescue helicopter and even try out an ejection seat. Visitors are also encouraged to compare different aviation technologies – Allison’s favorites were the “Allison” engines, of course. This is the kind of museum that

invites you to linger, so it’s worth sacrificing some beach time to have the place to yourself on a sunny day. The dive bombers who trained at NAS Wildwood had a national focus, but the museum gives a nod to its local impact. “Trenton Makes, The Navy Takes” shows the contributions New Jersey’s capital made to the World War II effort. Maps on the museum’s website show training locations, so you can see whether your favorite fishing spot was once a target. The museum also features a gift shop, which is a delight to explore. Across the parking lot, the Flight Deck Diner is open for a simple lunch. The facility remains a working airport, and the Flight Deck offers a great view of the planes taking off and landing – unless they are grounded due to the rain. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for kids, and the museum opens at 9am daily in October and November. Dive into World War II history with a trip to this museum. Next week: Treasure Hunting at the West End Garage

The Dating Column

S

Stella Dixon’s take on romance at the shore.

OME people are probably wondering what business I have writing a dating column at all. My longest relationship lasted just two years, and that was back in college, when our biggest challenge as a couple was finding the bar with the cheapest cover charge. We once had an argument, a bona fide yelling match, because he wouldn’t lend me his blender. Kitchen appliances aside, when it comes to finding that special someone, my track record is disastrous. I once dated the cool surfer guy, because he had good hair and was, well, the cool surfer guy. I dated the nice guy when I got sick of the cool guy flaking on me, until I discovered nice guy’s criminal record. I dated the happy-go-lucky guy, who was all fun and games until he stopped taking his anti-depressants. I’ve gone out with jocks, geeks, and mommas boys. I’ve gone on blind dates, bad dates, great dates, and absolutely ridiculous dates with strange men, goofy men, mean men, and, on a couple of really confusing evenings, homosexual men. Like my favorite and most painful pair of

New! Halloween Gourd Art Collection

five-inch stilettos, I end up swearing off the entire gender every time I give it another go. But, hopeless romantic that I am, I always and inevitably stuff my painted toes back into those godforsaken shoes and agree to yet another dinner and a movie. I’ve done my best June Cleaver impression, striving to be an absolute doll of domesticity. I’ve been the endearing tomboy, feigning excitement over a full count in the ninth inning with bases loaded and two outs. I’ve tried to be sexy, forgoing granny-panties for fishnet stockings and a push-up bra.

I’ve been the free-spirited hippie, the overachiever, and the raging feminist – all the while hoping that Mr Right would recognize my own unique persona. For all the time I’ve spent searching, I’ve never been married. I’ve never even been close. I’ve never lived with a guy or given a man a key to my place. In fact, if I’m worried about keys at all, it’s usually because I’m hiding spare sets from one of several crazy exes. So no, I have no business offering advice of any kind (the Answer Lady has that covered, anyway). But what I can offer are stories – some serious, some seriously laughable – and, perhaps, a little hope as well. Despite dark dating moments, I still believe that chivalry’s alive, however dormant, and that real love does exist, however rare. My best friend says that when it comes to dating in Cape May County, the odds are good, but the goods are seriously odd. I’ll be twenty-five years old tomorrow, and so far I haven’t been able to prove her wrong. But I have had one heck of an adventure trying. I’d like to invite you, my trusty readers, to come along for the ride.

HAD DE SATNICK AND THE ENTIRE LIFE ROLLS ON FAMILY would like to thank all those who participated, volunteered, sponsored, and donated to the 5th Annual LRO East Coast Golf Tournament. Special Thanks for the generous contribution from Cape May Fire Department and the O’Hara Family, as they Converted the Pancake house into Uncle Bill’s PASTA HOUSE for the Inaugural LRO Spaghetti Dinner. Golfers enjoyed a picture perfect fall day at Cape May National, Congratulations is in order, 1st Place Overall to the Title Company of Jersey, 1st Place All-Women Team Wunder/Biancco, Pizza for a Year by Lucky Bones went to Chris McDuell, best blind-folded putter Bart McGinn. And who can forget Todd de Satnick’s Cut-for-a-Cause, in less than 48 hours, he raised over $9,000 for Life Rolls On by offering up his curly locks to be cut off during the fund raiser at the Harbor View. Todd was a man of his word and a true sport, “My idea was to get people that might not have known about Life Rolls On thru Chad’s efforts, involved with something like…My Hair. I realized that 20 years of being a target of clippers and scissors could go to such a good cause.” A portion of the fundraising efforts will be used to allow underpriviledged children the opportunity to attend Life Rolls On Annual Night by the Ocean Annual Gala. Over $25,000 was raised thru the Golf Tournament, and the 5 year total now exceeds $134,000 ! I am so grateful for all of the support thru our small community. I encourage all of you to log onto www.liferollson.org/twsa and stay up to date on all of LRO’s efforts/events. They Will Surf Again will again be held in Wildwood Crest in June 2011, so keep your calenders open.

The Movie Column

Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, covers film offerings at the Cape May Forum

T

HIS upcoming weekend, Cape May Forum will host its inaugural “Chautauqua at the Shore,” bringing together internationally-renowned speakers and a variety of arts and cultural events under one theme. The focus of this year’s event is Humor: Can It Save the World? The Forum runs from October 8-11 this year, and features more than 30 events and several core lectures on the topic of humor. The Cape May Film Festival is contributing plenty of programs to the mix — and we’re going way beyond just “funny films.” A film retrospective entitled “Humor in the Armed Services” will be presented by local film enthusiast/expert Dottie Knapp. “If humor can save the world, those in our armed forces who actually do the saving give us a humorous look at their lives through the movies,” says Dottie. “In these clips from military films you will see that nothing changes – no matter which war, no matter which branch of military service and no matter which theater of operation.” Dottie’s presentation takes place Saturday, October

Grant in “I Was a Male War Bride” from Knapp’s retrospective, “Humor in the Armed Services.”

9, at 2pm at the Wildwood Naval Air Station. The station will also screen several Bob Hope classics presented by station director Dr Joe Salvatore. The Wrong Box is a comedy starring Michael Caine, Peter Sellers, and Dudley Moore. In Victorian England, a fortune now depends on which of two brothers can outlive the other. It features virtuous maidens, cunning cousins, dastardly deeds, bodies in

barrels and boxes and boxes of boxes! This program will run Sunday, October 10, 8:15pm at the Episcopal Church of the Advent on Washington and Franklin. Opposable Chums may well be the very first nature documentary comedy! “Competitive bird watching” may sound like an oxymoron, but it makes perfect sense to the participants of The World Series of Birding, who convene each spring to see which team can identify the most bird species in 24 hours within New Jersey. The event is equal parts scavenger hunt, science expedition and endurance test. This program is Sunday, October 10, 7pm, also at Episcopal Church of the Advent. What weekend of humor would be complete without honoring Mark Twain? The Errol Flynn classic The Prince and the Pauper will screen for the 175th anniversary of Twain’s birth — preceded by staged readings of Twain’s classics by East Lynne Theater Company. This program is on Monday, October 11, 6:30pm at the First Presbyterian Church at 500 Hughes Street. For a complete list of Forum events, visit www.capemayforum.org.

BUNNY is a very pretty girl who needs someone with a firm hand who is willing to train her. She gets excited easily, but only because she’s so happy to see you. Due to that exuberance she cannot go to a home with children. We believe that with the right person, she could become a great pet. If you’re a patient person with a big heart, please consider giving Bunny a second chance. Adoption fee is $95.

the

«

SHAMUS is a cute one-year-old lab. As with any lab pup Shamus is very enthusiastic and can be stubborn, but he actually is a sweet boy. He loves to play but can be a little rough, so we recommend a home with older kids. What Shamus needs now, aside from a stable, forever home, is someone who is confident and firm and will give him the training and affection he needs and deserves. Adoption fee is $95.

Doggie Nanny

While you’re away, your pet must play! I’ll come and stay and play with your pets at their own home!

SKITTLES, along with Roscoe, was surrendered to our shelter because his owners were moving. He’s a wonderful older guy who loves to be around people and other dogs. He’s sweet and friendly and doesn’t mind a little roughhousing either. All he needs now is a home to call his own. We’re sure you’ll love this gentleman and will be happy to make him a part of your family. Adoption fee is $35.

TRIXIE could just as well be named Pixie, as she’s always sitting alertly, with her head cocked slightly to the side. She has a narrow face and slanted eyes, which give her an especially piquant appearance. This little calico loves to play with her brother, Moose, and hopes you’ll adopt them together. Adoption fee is $70.

«

AMARETTO is definitely a cool cat... he does have his preferences, though. He doesn’t like to be restrained, so he won’t welcome hugs and kisses. However, he does like treats and being petted and scratched behind his ears. If a retiring male cat is what you’re looking for, stop by and see Amaretto. Adoption fee is $35.

CHUCK is a rather boring name for a really striking cat. This fellow is yellow and white, and rather on the large side, but not fat. His biggest problem is that he’s bored in a cage. Surely, though, when he has a chance to roam and romp, he’ll be content Buy him a toy, and you’ll be his hero! Adoption fee is $35.

The Comedy That Surrounds Us ADVERTISING FEATURE

T

HE SECOND Stage joins the party as Cape May Forum examines whether humor can save the world. Topdog/Underdog is the perfect model of how humor is used as a theatrical device. This darkly comic fable of brotherly love and family identity is Suzan-Lori Parks award-winning play and it continues on our main stage. Though it has strong language and adult themes, it has been called “an utterly mesmerizing evening of theater.” On Saturday, October 9 at 5pm, Artistic Director Roy Steinberg will present Life Behind The Curtain – a close-up look by an insider of the hilarious things that happen off-stage and behind the camera. So many people have asked him to tell his stories at dinner parties that he decided to let the public in on what really happens at television studios and backstage. The movie Soapdish is tame compared to the real life occurrences in the offices and dressing rooms at network studios. “The camera is facing the wrong way” is a familiar refrain from the crew who find the scenes they are shooting less interesting than what is happening at the studio. You’ll hear of naked actors running through the halls, producers locking themselves in their offices, tigers mauling themselves because of NBC security and a host of crazy situations. It has made people laugh at parties on both coasts. Now it is your turn. In ancient Greece, comic satyr plays were part of the festivals where the great tragedies were performed. Aristotle said “in a comedy the people on stage are like us, but less than us”. We have seen comic servants in commedia del’arte in Italy. Moliere used humor to

“This is a tremendous play. I wish I could do it myself, but I must tell you Stephen and Jed are wonderful. What great performances. People should see this,” said Denzel Washington of “Topdog/Underdog.” Here he poses with one of the shows stars, Stephen Rider (center). poke fun at pompous people in his comedies in France. Shakespeare used comedy in the tavern scenes in Henry IV - Parts 1 and 2 using thieves and whores and cowards to contrast the scenes at court. Suzan-Lori Parks uses two down and out brothers to address more serious issues in Topdog/Underdog. The actors, Jed Reynolds and Stephen Rider, will join Roy Steinberg in engaging the audience in a discussion of how humor is used as an element in their play on Sunday, October 10 at 5pm. Finally, on Monday, October 11 at 8pm, Cape May Stage will present Bust A Gut Laughing where local business owners, politicians and residents will tell their favorite jokes. We expect a large number of audience members so reserve your seats now. Anyone can participate. Just send your joke to roy@capemaystage.com and we will give you a time to be at the stage to tell your joke. Bring your friends and neighbors. Cape May Stage has been known for producing high brow comedies like Topdog/Underdog and Happy Days (whose writers have won

Report from the wonderful world of Cape May property... by Chris Bezaire

Brian and Gregg Giancola and sold by Bill Bezaire, both of Coldwell Banker Sol Needles, for $900,000. Finally, in Cape May 232 Windsor Avenue #2 listed by Justin Aftanis of Cape May Realty was sold by Carol Anderson of Coastline Realty for $310,000. In West Cape May there were two transactions for the period. First, 125 York Avenue, listed by Joe GilMartin of Century 21 GilMartin, was sold by a realtor from Wildwood for $295,000. Also sold was 15 Park Boulevard, listed by Carol Menz of Coastline Realty, for $300,000 by Ryan Griffin of DeSatnick Real Estate. This week’s sales tip has to do with marketing. The internet continues to be the primary source for selling your property and for finding an agent. The survey results from the

HINGS have slowed down a bit here at the Cape and thus so has the frequency of my articles ( you have to have something to write about before you can write it!). Here is a look at the transactions from September 8 through September 29. The big transaction of the period was 615 Jefferson which was listed and sold by Charity Clark-McBride of Chris Clemans SIR for $1,495,000... my wife is so jealous, she loves that house! Also, since school is now back in session, it only seems right that Tom “The Teacher” Shagren of Jersey Cape Realty was back at it again – twice. First selling 205 Howard Street listed by Dee Lanzalotti of Jersey Cape for $850,000, then selling Unit 316 at Cape Roc listed by the husband-andwife team of Douglass and Joyce Jewell of Jewell Real Estate for $285,000. A side note, normally we don’t print the names of nonCape May realtors, but Doug and Joyce have done a wonderful job getting a new soup kitchen up and running in Middle Township and I ask that anybody who can help contribute. Also sold was 305 Pittsburgh, listed by

last poll show that over 73% of respondents found their realtor online. The same can be said of your property. People love to sit on their couch and start looking online long before they ever pick up the phone or send an email. The more media you have associated with your property, the more likely it will be seen by prospective buyers. Video is the best way to make sure your property gets viewed, as properties with videos show up first in most search engines. The point? If you are selling your house, it is a good idea to find out what web strategies your agent will implement, and how they plan on marketing your property through pictures and videos. If they don’t have a plan, you might want to consider someone who does. Finally , the third quarter of 2010 is now over and I have compiled an in-depth overview of the local market over the last four quarters. Let me know if you want a copy. Chris Bezaire is a fifth-generation realtor with Coldwell Banker Sol Needles Real Estate. You can find him at www.CapeMayChris.com; email chris@capemaychris.com; or type in Cape May Chris on Facebook and Twitter.

36 Great Things To Do In Cool Cape May

Think you’ve seen Cape May? Think again. Consult our list for some fresh ideas. 1. Morey’s Piers The Wildwood Boardwalk is now home to the biggest attraction the Jersey Shore has seen in years. The Ghost Ship, unveiled Memorial Day Weekend, is a one-of-a-kind haunted attraction featuring animatronics, a scary soundtrack and live actors. Wind your way through the maze-like course of a wrecked ship that appears it has crashed right into Morey’s Piers, and do it soon – the Piers close after October 10. 2. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a quaint seaside town. Then make sure you explore bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State Park. You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping at the outlets. Or just enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins. For more information or to book a reservation, call 800-64-FERRY or visit capemaylewesferry.com. 3. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a joy to see them. Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. You might even see a whale. Tours take off at Wilson Avenue. You can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For information, call (609) 898-0055 or visit www.capemaywhalewatch.com. 4. Cape May Family Treasure Hunt*

Explore Cape May and uncover its architectural elements from a kid’s perspective. Packet includes a clue sheet and map that will take you on a self-guided discovery tour. their store which carries many alpaca-related items (forget wool; go with an alpaca sweater this winter!) And don’t forget to greet the grazing alpaca – they make it all possible. Call (609) 884-0563. 8. The ground floor of the tower is fully accessible. Entrance fee is $6 for adults and $2.50 for children. 9. Bird Droppings

A

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

NYBODY seen any monarchs around lately? Monarch butterf lies. Big, orange-andblack insects about the size of your average chocolate-chip cookie. You could hardly swing a lollipop and not hit one of the things a couple weekends ago. Various people made various estimates, but one I heard put the number of migrating monarchs in Cape May on September 18 at 1.5 million. That’s a lot of biomass and a lot of reconstituted milkweed (the host plant for monarchs). Wait a minute, you’re thinking, isn’t this supposed to be a column about birds. Yes. Or maybe mostly. Or maybe no, what gave you that idea? The title? Fact is, most people who enjoy birds don’t let their partiality stop where feathers begin and end. Any old envoy of nature is likely to be appreciated, especially something as stunning as a monarch butterf ly. I was at Cape May Point State Park and even people who wouldn’t cross the street to see a bird were stopping in their tracks.

Opening their mouths. Nudging each other and commenting on all the butterf lies. Not bugs. Not insects. Butterf lies. They really recognized them. Like I said, I was at Cape May Point State Park. I tried to do ten one-minute point counts, surveying the monarchs I could see passing using only my eyes (no binoculars). The average count was 180

insects passing every minute. Sound like a lot? It was. But it’s not even half my record. In 1999, I estimated 500 butterf lies a minute. And that’s not even the biggest count I ever witnessed. Back in 1976 or 1977 (before anybody was paying attention to monarchs, including me) I witnessed a f light so massive that Sunset Boulevard was paved with butterf ly wings. Dismembered wings. The sort that fall to the pavement when cars hit f lying butterf lies. Remember, there were a lot fewer cars on Sunset Boulevard at the end of September back in 1976. But there were massive numbers of butterf lies. So why am I telling you about this spectacular aggregation when it’s past? Well, because it ain’t over yet. There is a very real possibility that this great, recent f light was just a warm-up. Fact is, the big monarch migration push occurs at the end of September or the beginning of October – like when you’ll be reading this column.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 103 It’s possible, just possible, that we’re heading for another, larger f light. Breeding monarchs do well in dry years, and this has been a very dry summer. A cold front passing anytime between September 28 and October 8 is almost certain to ferry a big orange cloud of butterf lies our way. Maybe a record f light. In the evening, when tired monarchs call it a day, the goldenrod on the dunes turns orange beneath the weight of monarchs. Roost trees, facing east towards the rising sun, are festooned with these jeweled treasures. Wings closed, monarchs look like dead leaves. Wings open, they look like a bright, orange dollop of stained-glass window. The folks at the Cape May Bird Observatory are keeping tabs on the migration. They’ve been taking annual surveys for a number of years. They have tagging programs and demonstrations and it’s all free… Well, it doesn’t cost anything to just head for Cape May Point and watch what qualifies as one of New Jersey’s most spectacular natural spectacles. Stop by the CMBO; pick up something with a monarch on it! Just think. You could be there the day they break the monarch record. Of course, nature offers no promises. She also offers no

rain checks. If it happens and you miss it, the fault will be yours. The Cape May Bird Observatory (CMBO) is THE place for anything to do with nature. Located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point, the center is open 9:30–4:30pm daily. Ask any of our staff – they are always glad to help with anything you need. Check out the monarch merchandise, the newest in books (including Pete Dunne’s newest Bayshore Summer), bird feeders, and some great new and fun merchandise – including our exclusive CMBO logo jewelry, clothing, totes, and more. Take a look at the sightings log to check what’s being seen, pick up a bargain from the vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, or just browse. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit us online www.BirdCapeMay. org – where birding Cape May is only a click away. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
