The Police Blotter

Every week we feature quirky police reports from small towns across America. Found on the website www.smalltownmisfit.com. AMHERST, NY – A Southcreek Court woman reported letting her boyfriend borrow her truck to run an errand, and he never returned. She had only known the man for two weeks and does not know his last name or address. – Amherst Bee News

Learn Russian With Tanya

YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act. We at Exit Zero warmly embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and offer a weekly lesson to help you communicate. Please note – the “Russian” we are printing is just our phonetic interpretation. Do you pamper your pets? Vy baluete svoih pitomcev? Here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Mozhete schitat nas zhestokimi, no u nas net koliasok dlia sobak, my zastavliaem ih hodit. Which translates to: You may think we are cruel, but we don’t have strollers for our dogs – we make them walk. –Tanya Zotava

Weird Word Of The Week

Cockamamie This word is used to describe something that is ridiculous, incredible or outright implausible.

A Picture From The Past

Ben Miller

CAPE May’s dune wall was installed in the 1990s. The city’s dunes are no longer mounds of sand thanks to beach replenishment, but their fenced off area is still filled with sea grasses and plants that serve two purposes. Their root system helps keep sand in place during damaging storms and the vegetation helps augment the seawall protecting the city from storm surges. Cape May City Ordinance § 15812.C makes it a crime to walk on the dunes or disturb them in any way. – Ben Miller

Facebook Mystery Contest

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, taken by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know where you could find these cute rubber duckies, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a fullsize, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Random Fact Of The Week

A BORDER collie named Rico was documented in scientific testing as having a vocabulary of more than 200 words. He could identify and fetch items shown in pictures, and learned new words at the level of a three-year-old child.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Fortitude is the guard and support of the other virtues. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with Bento Box full of sushi, tempura, teriyaki and a salad. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

T

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

HIS past weekend, after 13 months of planning, the first annual Cape May Forum: Chautauqua at the Shore blanketed Cape May in a variety of events all centered on the question, “Can Humor Save the World?” Myles Martel, program chair for Cape May Forum, talked about the success of the event. “It was extremely well received – Dr. John Morreall’s lecture even produced a standing ovation,” he said. “For me, the highlight was seeing it all come together. There were months of hard work by nearly two dozen people in this community, including representatives of nearly every major non-profit, that went into making this event a success.” And, according to Myles, the event lived up to the expectations of its organizers. “The attendance at all events was reasonably consistent with our expectations,” he said, “and Sunday night’s event at the Rusty Nail exceeded our expectations – especially considering that it was competing with both the Eagles and Phillies games.” On an already busy October weekend, Cape May Forum did more than bring tourists into Cape May out of season – it was a major force in bringing together the many organizations of this community. That’s why we’re happy to hear that Cape May Forum’s executive board members – Ronnie Cohen, Ed Henry, Tom Carroll and Jim Moffatt – are determined to make the event a lasting and meaningful institution for the community and its visitors. So, what’s in store for next year? “I don’t officially know the theme for next year,” said Jim Moffatt, “but I do know that it has to do with food.” We’re sold on that idea.

The forum had some tough competition. In terms of events, Saturday was one of the busiest days of the year. There was the Lima Bean Festivial (on which there is more below), Victorian Week events, a wine festival at the ferry (which we somehow never get to hear about ahead of time) and Coast Day NJ: A Celebration of the Sea, which was held at the Lobster House (and which also managed to fly under our radar screen). Who says Cape May shuts down in the off-season? IT MAY be hard to find a lima bean farm in West Cape May these days, but that hasn’t stopped locals from celebrating the magical bean each year with gusto. We received an edict shortly before the festival (from Lima Bean Czar Diane Flanegan) asking that all participants manning booths give their displays a lima bean theme. This request proved difficult to honor, although the Exit Zero staff did its darndest to come up with ideas on the eve of the festival. We considered a poster rendered in lima bean mosaic, a lima bean crossword, and ultimately settled on a zesty lima bean snack bar. Unfortunately, when we contacted a col-

³

league to pick up the necessary ingredients (we were out of town on an important field trip), she just laughed. So, it didn’t happen. In West Cape May, however, the lima bean is no joke. We failed to bring anything lima-oriented to the table (although our green, oval-shaped Exit Zero magnets came very close), but we were impressed with the variety of beany goods available in Wilbraham Park. There was lima bean chili, lima bean soup, lima bean earrings, T-shirts and masks, home-made mint and lima bean lip balm, even lima-bean-shaped people. It’s safe to say that this event has done for the lima bean what George Washington Carver did for the peanut. Even better, the festival brought all kinds of folks together on a beautiful October day. For most of the morning and afternoon, the park was inundated with more foot traffic than we’ve seen anywhere on the island since early September. There were teenagers whizzing by on bikes, older folks from Victorian Towers, locals eager for diversion, and plenty of out-of-towners who’d come down for the Cape May Forum or Victorian Weekend (all of whom we sent away from our table with a fresh copy of Exit Zero). We’re already looking forward to next year’s festival, where we’ll reveal the biggest, shiniest, most innovative lima bean thingamajig this town has ever seen. BELATED congratulations to John Cooke, who runs the Victorian Motel and Camelot with his wife Suzanne. John was recently voted President of the Chamber of Commerce, defeating Bill Causey, whose defeat CAN’T have been caused by underexposure (he has been EZ’s most-photographed human being in the last six months).

I

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

T’S SO easy to focus on the characters who come to the restaurant for dinner that sometimes I forget how entertaining my fellow servers can be. First, there’s Veronica, the spunky little Romanian waitress for whom everything relates back to sex. A few weeks ago, my manager had Veronica wipe fingerprints off of the mirror in the dining room. Because the shadows on the glass made it difficult to see the smudges while on top of them, my manager stood back a few steps to offer direction. “A little higher,” she said. “Now a little lower. To the left a little more, a little more. And now to the right…and down…and left…” Finally, Veronica turned to my manager, her black curls bouncing over her shoulders. She said, in her thick Romanian accent, “I sympathize with your fiancé.” Then there’s Moe, a waiter whose looks are as boy-next-door as they come. Moe could be one of the all-American guys on the cover of a college admissions brochure. He’d be the one in khaki cargo shorts and a polo, throwing a Frisbee on an impecca-

bly-manicured lawn and smiling with his impeccably white teeth. At a table, Moe is nothing but “Yes, ma’am” and “No, sir.” He’s polite and genteel and courteous – at least until he gets into the kitchen. Then Moe becomes some expletive-using, wallpunching, spoon-throwing version of his mild-mannered alter ego. What looks like a rosy complexion in the dining room (perhaps a mild sunburn from all that Ivy League Frisbee playing), becomes an explosive red under the f luorescent lights of the kitchen. Beads of sweat gather around Moe’s forehead as he curses the bastards who stiffed him or the cook who screwed him. Dishwashers and bar-

tenders alike tiptoe around Moe when he launches into one of his fits. Only Veronica dares to provoke him. “All that passion,” she says, eyeing up Moe like a lioness, “I can think of a few good uses for it.” Then there’s Allison, a 21st-century hippie who’s sworn off cell phones and takes impromptu trips to Sweden for weekends of interpretive dance performance. When we met, she told me she needed to smudge my house in order to cleanse my clogged aura (which prompted yet more sexual innuendoes from Veronica). And me? I’m the hypersensitive one who needs everyone to get along, still takes a bad tip personally, and cries when the guy at table six proposes to his girlfriend. We’re an unlikely family, it’s true. But we are, indeed, a family. Over-sexed, temperamental, and high on f lower power, we’ve got all the dysfunction to prove it. But as much as we bicker, we never wonder who has got our back. We know that somebody will always be there, as surely as a dirty joke from Veronica, to help us find our way through the weeds.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

REMEMBER when it used to rain cats and dogs. Not the sort of cats and dogs feeble city folk refer to when it’s little more than a shower, but actual cats and dogs. Goats, too, and frogs, and, on occasion, Yankees. But no more of that now, it’s the cats and dogs I’m reminiscing excitingly about. In Cape May, of course, lots of strange things happen, and the wider world seems not to hear much about it. We’ve had our mile-high wooden elephant, the world’s first-ever soccer match, the buried treasure of Captain Kidd, the fabled elephants’ graveyard, the fountain of youth, and more, but being tight-lipped folks, we don’t let the wider world know. I bet, for example, that you were unaware that copies of this rag that are distributed wider than the city boundaries have a special hypnotic sequence of letters hidden on this very page, so that readers may recall they were amused, but cannot for the life of themselves remember what they were reading about in this column. I have the same effect verbally, too: it’s quite a skill.

Anyway, rain of cats and dogs, ah yes. The first sign of it was, I remember, tiny disgruntled mews as little kittens landed in gardens and sidewalks. Being made entirely of f luff, they drifted down like feathers, and were unharmed. Though being cats, they were hugely put out by the inconvenience. Then a smattering of Chihuahuas, likewise bouncing and tumbling to a shrill angry halt. At that stage I headed for home, as I had on my favored top hat and did not wish to ruin it. I was barely halfway there

when I heard loud crumps and poodles rained down, crushing a passing charabanc and glancing off a lady’s hoop skirt. There was an almighty commotion as a trio of Huskies landed among some older gents having tea outside the Admiral, and all hell broke loose when an open carriage full of visiting ladies from Philadelphia was landed on by a score of fully-grown, livid Scottish Wildcats. And you do not want to know the details of the next few minutes, when Great Danes and those fat cheery dogs that rescue Swiss people from avalanches started falling. I ran for cover, making it in unscathed, or so I thought, other than having the top of one of my mustaches bent out of its waxed shape by a glancing blow from a pug. But when I took off my top hat, I discovered it to be six inches shorter and concertina-ed like an accordion. Upon close inspection, I found that the culprit was still nestled in the dent: a tiny, newborn Cairn Terrier. We took one look at each other and the rest, dear hearts, was history.

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover

I

An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz

’M LONG overdue for a Cape May trip. I can always tell when I’ve reached my threshold for tolerance of North Jersey life and I need to escape. I’ve celebrated quite a few holidays in Cape May and have completely embraced the off-season. In fact, it never seems to really be “off,” which is why you should visit! However, I have not yet taken the famous Exit 0 in November — and I’m definitely missing out. Every month offers different opportunities for the varied interests of residents and visitors. Not only does November bring the anticipation of the holiday season, it is still a month that does not require heavy winter-wardrobe artillery. For mystery enthusiasts, Sherlock Holmes Weekend is a great way to start off. Dress in appropriate Victorian attire and scour the streets of Cape May for clues to solve a new mystery with Holmes and Watson (the victor is awarded $250). Contact 1-800-275-4278 for tickets or visit www.capemaymac.org for more information and a list of the participating accom-

modations. Cape May sets the perfect stage for drama and intrigue! For music lovers, the 34th Cape May Jazz Festival takes place on November 12-14. Tickets went on sale September 1 and can be purchased by calling 609-884-7200 or 877-7CMJAZZ. The full schedule of performers is available at www.capemayjazz.com and includes The Yellowjackets, Javon Jackson with Les McCann, The Chris Bergson Blues Band, and Jonny Hirsch Blues Band, just to name a few.

For sportsmen, Utsch’s Marina presents the Striped Bass Challenge beginning November 3-27. Awards are as follows: $1000 for heaviest fish, $1000 for most fish weighed in, $1000 for heaviest fish female angler, $500 for heaviest fish junior angler. Official rules and forms can be found at www.capemayharbor.com. For theater-goers, don’t combat New York traffic in the holiday rush! Instead, see The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse from October 27-November 20. Reserve your tickets now (609-884-1341) as they sell out fast. Check out Veterans’ Night on November 11, where the performance is halfprice for all active duty military personnel and veterans, and the Pay-What-You-CanMatinee on Sunday, November 14 at 3pm. All remaining tickets not previously sold will be a pay-what-you-can price on a firstcome, first-serve basis. November is full of fantastic events and activities, and I barely scratched the surface. Visit Cape May in the autumn and I promise, you will not be disappointed!

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I live in Cape May, my sister lives in Philly. Occasionally we get together for a girls’ weekend, just the two of us. Sometimes it’s New York, sometimes we’ll do a Phillies game, or sometimes she’ll come to Cape May. We’ve been keeping these weekends on the down-low for the past couple of years, because if we mention them to our parents or other siblings, they immediately invite themselves. We’re not an especially close family, and my sister and I really enjoy our time alone together. How can we protect it without feeling guilty? – Sneaky Sister Dear Sneaky Ah, “guilt” and “family” – they go together like peanut butter and jelly, do they not? They say that we can pick our friends, but not our family (and then it kind

of devolves into something about picking noses, but the Answer Lady digresses). Family-wise, we’re stuck with whatever we get. So if we happen to have a family member who is also a friend, it’s a blessing, not something to feel guilty about. The Answer Lady is assuming that you and your sister are not using this time together to post junior-high-school-era pictures of your family members on awkwardfamilyphotos.com. Quality time with the rest of your family is still a priority, and don’t

MaryAnn’s CONTEMPORARY & ESTATE JEWELRY

rub their noses in your time together – if you do not make a big production of your weekends with your sister, eventually no one else will, either. We’re all entitled to a girls’ weekend occasionally (those of us who are girls, anyway), so enjoy it and don’t let anyone guilt you into anything. PS: If you’re looking for a great girls’ weekend, check out the Women’s Mind, Body, Soul Sweet Escape, November 5-7, at www.congresshall.com. Dear Answer Lady I am married with three kids, and my sister is a child-free newlywed. She recently adopted a dog and named it after my eldest! I don’t know whether to be flattered or insulted. – Sibling Silliness Dear Silly The Answer Lady thinks that’s what you get for naming your daughter Spot. She jests, of course. Assuming that you have a decent relationship with your sister, and, more importantly, that your daughter isn’t upset about this, I wouldn’t make an issue of it. Or, you could adopt a dog and name it after her husband – that’ll fix her.

Activity Of The Week

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Treasure-hunting at the West End Garage.

DON’T need an excuse to go shopping, but if I did, Ladies Night at the West End Garage would be it. I already love this combination retail and gallery space, which opened in West Cape May in 2009. Add music, food, a fashion show and wine – with my sister Tara, a West End vendor, pouring – and I’m there! Unusual finds abound at the West End Garage, so the Ladies Night menu, featuring cauliflower white chocolate soup from the Ebbitt Room, fit right in. Even without the wine, the funky vibe this unusual space invites you to linger. Where else can you find a T-shirt to last a season, art to hang on your wall for life, and furniture to pass on to the next generation? In front, the Artists’ Cooperative showcases the work of 28 local artists, in materials ranging from beach glass to gourds. To the rear, vendors offer new items, antiques and collectibles. The shoppers are equally diverse – I bought a natural sponge to pamper my skin, and the next shopper picked one like it for her science project. Halloween on your mind? Consider a bat

shirt from Wyndina, a witchy apron and hat, or pumpkin candles. Happy Baby offers tiny tutus, to be worn alone or in combination, for costumes or every day adorableness. Holiday shopping? Consider affordable ornaments, jewelry, or photographs. Need a gift for a teacher or co-worker? You’ll find it here. Antiques aficionados will find a wide range of periods to choose from. Lovers of the Victorian era can find their treasures. Arts and Crafts? Here’s a Limbert

oak rocker. Mid-century modern? How about some McCoy and Hull art pottery? A woman lingering at the Scout & Annie booth pondered the logistics of shipping Brock of California “Desert Mist” tableware back to her Eichler of California home – expensive, but, “This stuff is hard to find!” Pondering is part of the fun, but if you see something you really like, don’t hesitate. Most of these are one-of-a-kind pieces, so when they are gone, that’s it. I saw one disappointed shopper clinging to a surprised vendor, wailing about the sold sign on “her” table. The artwork is unique, too, so commit when you fall in love with a piece you can afford. You’ll find something new every time you visit. The West End Garage has no highpressure sales force – you can wander at your leisure, and volunteers periodically check in with you and offer to hold your items at the check out. Prices range from pocket change to platinum card – there truly is something for everyone at the West End Garage. Next Week: Greet the Ghosts

The Dating Column

Stella Dixon’s take on romance at the shore – where the odds are good, but the goods are odd.

A

GOOD story is important to me. When I was a little girl, I thought I might lock eyes with the man of my dreams across the passion fruit display at the grocery market (“Passion from the very beginning!”). Better yet, my overzealous serve might put a tennis ball through the windshield of his new pick-up truck. (“And that, dear friends, is why we’ll be having a tennis-themed wedding!”). Never, in all my Disney-induced dreams, did I foresee a cyber-space romance. Love at first sight? Maybe. Love at first click? Definitely not. Nevertheless, an eHarmony commercial can look appealing during a crisp Cape May fall. There are few men – young, straight, available ones – here to begin with. Those who stick around through the off-season are often content blowing unemployment checks on beer pong. At a recent party (on a Tuesday night, no less), I watched the loser of a tequila-chugging contest squirt lime juice into his own eye, while men on the other side of the room launched a hacky-sack at each other’s crotches. On the couch with the puppy I’d rescued from the

chugging contest, I commiserated over our shared geographic misfortune and the time I’d wasted shaving my legs – 29 dimensions of compatibility, and I end up with the dog. In the throes of a quarter-life crisis, I created a profile on Plenty of Fish, a dating website that’s free of charge (which only means a higher concentration of couch potatoes). I checked boxes reading strongly agree, somewhat agree, and totally disagree next to statements like: I enjoy being the life of the party, and I sure am

an adventurous eater. The next day, I had messages from FranktheTank and JerzyHomeboy. Goodguy36 asked to meet me, but only if I could swear my allegiance to the Philadelphia Eagles. Perfect4U asked what kind of salsa I like. I received two electronic roses, three requests for an “intimate encounter,” and only one promising e-mail. The note was from Jeremy2, a six-foot tall gentleman, according to his profile, who enjoys writing and coaching little league. Reluctantly, I agreed to a date. Unfortunately, the bachelor’s degree Jeremy2 had during mini-golf became an associate’s on the boardwalk. He was 27 on the Ferris wheel, and a year older on the log flume. Even his dog, who was Zoe at the ice cream shop, became Chloe on the ride home. I deactivated my Plenty of Fish account and told Jeremy2 not to call me again. I do know people who’ve found healthy relationships online, and that’s wonderful. But I am no digital damsel in distress, at least not yet. There are plenty of fish in the sea, but there’s nothing wrong with swimming alone. I’m holding out for that tennis-ball-throughthe-windshield thing anyway.

The Movie Column

T

Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, previews “Sneakers & Soul”

HE Saturday night feature presentation has been selected for this year’s Cape May Film Festival, and it is a homecoming of sorts. Sneakers & Soul was directed by Jon Zelenak (whose mother is Cape May’s Superintendent of Schools) and much of the film was shot here in Cape May! Yes, you may spot a more than one local in a scene right at the beginning. “No matter what you do in life, always have a perfect bed and a comfortable pair of shoes, because when you’re not in one, you’re in the other.” So goes the credo of Johnnyboy Bailey’s late father, Murray, a man whose passion for life and love for adventure was an inspiration to all. It is also the credo that has haunted Johnny-boy, an overworked and under-enthused lawyer from South Jersey who finds himself trapped in a routine as dull as the black loafers he spends every day in. When Johnny-boy inherits a pair of blue sneakers and a key to a mysterious New York City apartment from his father, he is given a chance to find a new direction for himself and live up to his father’s legacy.

Screenshot from “Sneakers & Soul,” the Saturday night feature at this year’s festival.

With his best friend, Ace, by his side Johnny-boy slips on the sneakers and the two embark on foot for a journey spanning the state of New Jersey to the Big Apple. It’s a trip that will not only bring them to the brink of friendship, but also give them a chance to rediscover the connections that matter most in this world. The film has been seen in more than a dozen film festivals, but Cape May Film

Festival will host the movie’s South Jersey premiere. In fact, this year’s festival will screen several world-premiere films, as well as a number of New Jersey premieres. We say it every year, but we work diligently to bring the most film premieres to New Jersey — and this year is no different. Among the features being presented we are also screening See What I’m Saying, a film about deaf entertainers that is engaging and heart-warming. We will also have a matinee screening of Standing Ovation, a film for tweeners that was shot here in Cape May and Wildwood. You can see reviews for both of these films in the archives of this column or at www.capemayfilm.org. For two free weekend passes, be the first to answer the following simple trivia question by emailing capemayfilm@hotmail. com. We have had a number of celebrities as guests of the Film Festival. Name the first big celebrity we hosted! Remember to join us at the Festival, October 22-24, exclusively at the Chalfonte Hotel.

ROCKY is a very cute one-year-old guy who is a little nervous at first but warms up nicely and enjoys it when affection is shown to him. He really doesn’t like lots of physical manipulation so he must go to a home with children over the age of 13. He will need some training and plenty of exercise as he is still just a young guy, but with some training and lots of love we feel he’ll be a great pet. Adoption fee is $95.

The bank pays the difference of whatever a patron can afford so that top quality theatre is accessible to everyone. Part of the mission of PNC Arts Alive is to engage audiences in new ways. Cape May Stage shares that mission as we reach out to new audiences. Topdog/Underdog is taught at universities across the nation and younger theatre-goers have identified this production as the one they are most interested in seeing. Cape May Stage is emerging as an important regional theatre that produces the highest quality productions of important plays. Topdog/Underdog portrays characters that are unlike anyone you are likely to meet in Cape May. That is part of the reason that the theatre has chosen to produce this play. The fact that

the play won the Tony Award for Best Play as well as the Pulitzer Prize, and the author received a MacArthur Genius Grant confirms that many people have celebrated the raw poetry in this text. Moreover, the theme of sibling rivalry goes back to Cain and Abel. Added to this mix is the historical context of race relations and who is on top and who is on the bottom so that the play is a stunning examination of American culture in the twenty-first century. It must be seen by any serious theatre-goer. The language in the play is profane, but it would be false if the language were anything else. Jed Reynolds and Stephen Rider have received accolades about their performances both in Los Angeles and in Cape May. The director is James Reynolds who plays Abe Carver on Days of our Lives. James Reynolds and his cast leapt at the opportunity to explore this challenging text and gave up far more lucrative offers to share this work here in Cape May. Their commitment and generosity is what keeps Cape May Stage in the forefront of American theatres.

35 Great Things To Do In Cool Cape May

Think you’ve seen Cape May? Think again. Consult our list for some fresh ideas. 1. Cape May-Lewes Ferry Take a trip over to Lewes, Delaware, a quaint seaside town. Then make sure you explore bustling Rehoboth Beach, the Fenwick Island Lighthouse or Cape Henlopen State Park. You can also take advantage of the tax-free shopping at the outlets. Or just enjoy the quiet and vastness of the bay on the deck of the ferry as you watch for dolphins. For more information or to book a reservation, call 800-64-FERRY or visit capemaylewesferry.com. 2. Whale and Dolphin Watching Dolphins are fairly common in the waters off Cape May, but it’s still a joy to see them. Cape May Whale & Dolphin Watch and Research Center offers you the best chance to see them up close. You might even see a whale. Tours take off at Wilson Avenue. You can see it on your left as you cross the small bridge before the Lobster House on your way out of town. For information, call (609) 898-0055 or visit www.capemaywhalewatch. com. 3. Cape May Family Treasure Hunt* Explore Cape May and uncover its architectural elements from a kid’s perspective. Bay Springs Alpaca Farm This one’s hard to believe, but Cape May has an alpaca farm. Near the end of beautiful New England Road, Warren and Barbara Nuessle live what they call the “alpaca lifestyle” – quiet and simple. Visit them between 10am and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and see how alpaca fiber is spun into yarn, or shop at their store which carries many alpaca-related items (forget wool; go with an alpaca sweater this winter!) And don’t forget to greet the grazing alpaca – they make it all possible. Call (609) 884-0563. 7. World War II Lookout Tower Museum* Fire Control Tower No. 23 on Sunset Boulevard is New Jersey’s last World War II tower, part of the

Bird Droppings

I

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

RECEIVED an email from a woman asking me about dead f lickers she was finding on the beach. I’m not a dead f licker expert, but few people are. What’s a f licker? Oh. Right. Sorry. A f licker is a magnum-sized woodpecker. Properly called Northern Flicker by birders; Colaptes auratus by ornithologists, “FLICKER!” by people standing on the Hawk Watch Platform at Cape May Point State Park when one of the large, golden-winged birds goes rocketing by. Flickers are common breeding birds of park habitat and open, broken woodlands. Then what were the birds doing on a beach? Nothing. They were dead. Death affects f lickers in much the same way it does other creatures. Even a non-f licker expert like yourself should know that. Anyway she was disturbed by the number of dead f lickers she’d found washed up on the beach. She wanted to know why so many had chosen to die there. Like most problems, this one was based on a misrepresentation. In fact, the

birds didn’t choose to die there. They chose to die at sea. They f lew out over the ocean, probably jumping off from New England or Long Island. Ran out of gas. Drowned. The currents and waves ferried them onto the beach where they joined the natural and unnatural f lotsam on the beach. Okay. They probably didn’t chose to die. They were brought by circumstances to

meet an untimely death. Okay. They don’t really run on petroleum distillates. Their “fuel” is the fat the birds store. I was taking literary license. But the scientific truth is that the foundation of the energy in fat, and gasoline, is the same carbon-to-carbon atom bond whose energetic source is the sun. The birds were migrating. They went offshore on a good tail wind, got tired, realized that it was a long way to land, then turned into the wind. From there they lost speed, lost headway. Ran out of fuel. Ditched. Drowned. Happens to millions and millions of birds every year. The reason this person was finding lots of f lickers was threefold. First, they are common. Second, they are migrating now. Third, being large birds, they don’t get puréed by the waves before they get washed up on shore. They are largely intact and easily identifiable by live f licker experts. Most of the smaller songbirds (and

Bird Droppings ? From Page 103 most f lickers for that matter), just go into old briny and become part of the detritus in the ocean which, in a few million years, might be converted by heat and pressure into oil deposits. But by that time we’ll all be using ethanol. You’re stuck on that millions and millions disclosure aren’t you? Every year countless millions of birds f ly offshore and drown. About 90% of all birds born in any year fail to live long enough to breed. Fall migration is the first big cut in the ranks. You don’t have to be a dead f licker expert to appreciate this: the fact that being a bird is one great, big, colossal challenge. It’s one of the reasons so many people are bird watchers. Every bird they see comes pretty close to a miracle. One that replicates itself every morning the bird wakes to see the dawn. Why not stop what you are doing now, and go outside and appreciate a miracle or two? But before you venture out on your own, you might want to consider stopping by the Cape May Bird Observatory (the CMBO) – THE place for anything to do with nature. Located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point, the center is open 9:30-4:30pm every day.

Ask any of our staff – they are always glad to help with anything you need – even things you didn’t know you needed yet. Check out the schedule of daily walks, pick up a free birding map, and while you are there, don’t forget the newest books (including Pete Dunne’s Bayshore Summer, and Birds of Cape May, a beautiful array of photos just released by Kevin Karlson), bird feeders, and some great new and fun merchandise – including our exclusive CMBO logo jewelry, clothing, totes, and more. Ghost Ship

A chilling and compelling new short story by Terry O’Brien (aka Cape May’s Stephen King) Chapter 2: Morey’s Piers

Mariner’s Landing – May 29, 2010

A

LL of Wildwood was abuzz with talk of the mystery ship that had appeared on the shore, seemingly out of nowhere, capturing the imagination of locals and tourists alike. The media crush was over. It ended a few days after the ship’s appearance, after the Philadelphia news stations reported the puzzling facts, and a couple cable news channels (the ones with hosts who always seemed to be yelling at each other) filed brief sound bites to fill the voracious maw of the 24-hour news cycle. Then the media began looking for the next politician with his pants down. Nationally and regionally, the story was over. Locally, the excitement kept building. In a stroke of incredibly bad luck, or great fortune, the ship had plowed inland and may have kept going into Rio Grande and Cape May had it not abutted the eastern edge of Mariner’s Landing.

Mariner’s Landing was one of three amusement piers, along with Surfside Pier and Adventure Pier, owned by the Morey’s Piers Organization. What had started 41 years earlier as one family, one slide and one dream, today was a model of seaside amusements to which all others aspired. The piers, run by brothers Jack and Will Morey, sons of the original slide pioneers, drew over three million people between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Morey’s Piers annually landed on the top of any number of “Best Seaside Parks” lists, and the brothers took very seriously the business of thrilling their guests. So it was with a sense of great awe and opportunity that they viewed the mystery ship the fates had delivered to their doorstep. Jack Morey, the public face of the company, had sprung into action the first morning after the ship appeared, contacting first the North Atlantic Paranormal Society to study it, then the business office to discuss charging admission. However, in a fit of goodwill, he decided to let those who wanted to look upon it do so for free. This did not stop him from printing up Ignis Fatuus T-shirts and bumper stickers. There were even billboards on south Jersey’s busiest highways announcing the big boat. As such, he had been inundated with text messages from friends and colleagues wondering exactly what in the hell an Ignis Fatuus was. Jack really had no idea, only that the literal translation from the Latin meant “whisper the willows,” and other cursory internet searches mentioned a green, glowing gas from decaying swamps. But the only green Jack cared about was the cash he’d bank on the mystery ship, whose only identifying marks were the words on her hull. “We can’t find anything,” his risk management guy, Geoff Rogers, had told him after a full three days of inspection. “Nothing but walls and cots. Everything else is gone.” Rogers was not a man prac-

He left no gray areas or dangling participles open for interpretation. When he said there was nothing left, he meant it. “Nothing?” Jack had asked, simply unable to accept the fact. “What did I say?” Geoff retorted. He was one of about three people on Earth who could speak to Jack Morey in such tones, the others being his brother and his late father. Rogers had been with the Morey’s Piers Organization for over 20 years and had watched the amusement entity expand from a few rides on one pier into an empire. He was five feet, seven inches tall but acted six-three and intimidated like a seven-footer. He was the Dikembe Mutombo of risk management assessors, and as such commanded almost as much respect on the Piers as the brothers themselves. He had led the Morey’s Piers maintenance crew through the ship a dozen times and found only the walls and cots. No mattresses, just the rusty springs of the bunks. The ship had been stripped of anything substantial. It was downright eerie. So eerie, in fact, that custodial manager Tom Henofer refused a 13th tour of the vessel until he and his men were guaranteed some sort of hazard pay. This is not because Tom and his men were greedy, it was because most of the men, including Tom, were catching a full-blown case of the willies. Everyone employed at management level and above at Morey’s Piers was required to wear a radio while on the clock; it was an efficient way to relay information among on all three piers in the event of an emergency, a stuck ride, or if someone had lost their lunch on the Nor’easter, one of the fastest coasters on the eastern seaboard. All radioed employees were trained in radio

Wednesday, October 13, 2010 communications, using clipped phrases like, “601 to 702, 10-22 at Mini Scooters.” However, during the first days of the Ignis Fatuus’ appearance, there was a lot of squawking “What was that?” and “Who’s in here?” and “Did you hear that?” Almost all of the men who were given eight-hour sleep breaks were unable to sleep. Something about the stillness and silence of the ship had crept into their minds, made them too restless. After three days of exhausted and spooked men, Geoff and Jack made the decision to call in the professionals: The North Atlantic Paranormal society. The NAPS first organized a decade earlier in New England as a non-profit, seeking to understand more about the feelings of foreboding that seemed to permeate some places more than others (proximity to old Indian burial grounds or Civil War battlefields seemed to enhance forebodings), and to bridge the gap between paranormal science and “real” science. NAPS founder Farley Barnsworth was a British national who’d taken up residence in the US in the ‘70s and, tired of being mocked by his more mainstream counterparts, set to the task of raising paranormal study from a curiosity to an accepted branch of science. In almost 30 years of work, at the price of his career and reputation, he had yet to accomplish this lofty goal, despite several tantalizing chances. The general public, raised on Poltergeist and The Ring, did not understand that real paranormal activity was painstakingly incremental and slow. Action figures did not simply rise up and fly across a room. Rather, a baseball might move six inches in a week; not fantastic, but more valuable as pure science than nine seasons of The X-Files. The NAPS shed its non-profit status around the time of Y2K hysteria, capitalizing on the irrational fear of the public, and in its first year made enough money chasing ghosts in machines to finance 20 years of research. Farley felt a little guilty taking advantage of people’s insecurities, but figured there were worse

things he could do. At least he wasn’t on the internet posing as the son of a deposed Nigerian king. He provided a service. No one forced anyone to do anything, so he slept well at night. In the intervening decade, the NAPS had done well enough to open satellite branches in New York and Philadelphia, each staffed with a select few agents looking for the same thing Farley was after; a little respect. “I think we can help you,” he had said to Jack two weeks ago upon receiving his call. And within days the NAPS has set up a makeshift headquarters on Mariner’s Landing. The Morey’s generously overpaid their fee, in cash and in advance, and even erected a small office building mere yards from the ship itself. “If there is something on this ship,” Farley assured him, “my team and I will find it.” “Good man,” Jack had said. Farley and his team began immediately scanning the ship, inch by inch, for exactly 16 hours per day. They found nothing. After two weeks, Farley was summoned into Jack ’s office. “I understand you and your crew have been unable to find anything of intrinsic value on the ship. Is that right?” Jack asked. Farley cleared his throat and thrust forth his stiff British upper lip. “That is correct, Mr Morey. Our instruments have been unable to detect anything out of the ordinary. Aside from her odd, unexplained appearance, there is nothing paranormal here.” Jack stood and moved from behind the desk. “So, in your professional opinion, there is nothing supernatural about this 1940s-era steamer that has suddenly appeared out of thin air and landed on my mini-golf course?” Farley could see the disappointment in Jack’s eyes and wished he could give him a different answer, but all he could tell him was, “No sir. Admittedly, her reappearance is difficult to explain; it’s hard to imagine a boat could drift unnoticed on the ocean for seven decades, but the simplest solution is the likeliest solution. Occam’s Razor and all

that. There is nothing supernatural at work here. I’d stake my reputation as a scientist on it.” Jack chose not to mention that he knew Barnsworth had no reputation as a scientist. “Well, thank you, Mr Barnsworth…” “Doctor Barnsworth.” “Of course, thank you Dr Barnsworth, but under the circumstances I don’t think we’ll need your services any lon…” Squawk! “Zero-one-one to base.” Jack and Farley started when the radio on Barnsworth’s collar chirped to life. “Excuse me,” Farley said and keyed the walkie. “Base to zeroone-one.” The radio whined with feedback. “Base, we’ve found something you should probably see...” Soon they were gathered in a circle along with Geoff, Tom Henofer and the NAPS agents. “Doesn’t look like much,” Jack said as Tom shone a flashlight on the floor. Tom agreed. “Looks like a hunk of floor to me.” Farley, knowing the NAPS was on the verge of being booted off the premises, aimed a steady gaze at zero-one-one. “Okay, Robinson. Tell us why we’re here.” Zero-one-one, known to anyone not on a walkie-talkie, as James Robinson, “J-Ro” to his really close friends, answered, “Here.” He aimed his flashlight at the floor. “I’m not surprised you can’t see it, especially the amateurs on the maintenance crew…” Tom growled. “No offense,” James corrected. “I only meant that they didn’t know what to look for.” James, a tall AfricanAmerican man of 26, bent his sizeable frame down and aimed the light at a spot on the floor. “If you look here,” he said as all the others bent to look, “you can see just the slightest discernible difference in the floor.” “I don’t see it,” Geoff said testily. “And I’ve got things to do.” James continued, unperturbed. “I know it’s difficult to see with the naked eye. I only

“Somebody hid something here,” Jack said. “And whoever hid it didn’t want it found.” chanced upon it when I walked over this spot with my spectrometer hooked to my belt loop. My meter blipped for just a half-asecond. I dismissed it as background noise, then I remembered the damn thing hadn’t made a peep in two weeks, so I swept the area.” Farley failed to contain his excitement. “Get to it James.” James went on. “When I came back I couldn’t find it and almost gave up. Then I figured I didn’t have anything better to do and I was still on the clock, so I crawled. I held my spectrometer right over the floor and crawled.” He unbelted the spectrometer, pressed a button on the side, and waved it over the metal floor. “For a long time it did this; nothing,” James said. “Then…” Beep! “There.” “My word,” Farley said. “Indubitably,” Jack replied, teasing the fussy Englishman. James continued: “A quick scan revealed a hollow about a foot deep. If you train your eye, you’ll see just the slightest difference in the metal over this area.” They trained their eyes, and the longer they looked, the more apparent it became. Jack said, “Someone cut a hole in the floor and covered it.” “Yes,” James agreed. “But they put the old piece back in upside down. That’s why this patch is rougher than the rest of the floor. Without the spectrometer I would never have found it. The texture of this square is the only difference.” Jack surmised, “Somebody hid something in there.” James shrugged in the darkness. “Makes sense.” Jack continued, “And whoever hid it didn’t want it found.” “Now,” Geoff said, “you’ve got my attention.” Jack turned to Tom. “Get me a torch.” Next Week: Davy Jones’ Lockbox
