The Police Blotter

Every week we feature quirky police reports from small towns across America. Found on the website www.smalltownmisfit.com. CHARLOTTE, NC: A woman said she was assaulted by a family member for moving furniture without permission. She did a bit of remodeling whit staying with a relative, and when her relative saw the changes he tried to push a china cabinet on her.

YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act. We at Exit Zero warmly embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and offer a weekly lesson to help you communicate. Please note – the “Russian” we are printing is just our phonetic interpretation. What do you call Bigfoot in your country? Kak vy nazyvaete bol’shuu stupniu v vashei strane? Here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: My nazyvaem ego Jeti, no po bol’shei chasti my znaem, chto eto mistifikacia. A Story From The Past

THE circular building just in front of the Bedford Inn was known as the Green Mill Club, and it was located on the corner of Howard Street and Beach Avenue. Founded in 1938, the Green Mill Club was strictly for Cape May locals and anyone who owned a summer cottage in town. Tourists were not allowed to partake of the ping pong, board games, dances and other activities. The building was lost to fire in the early 1960s, and the property is now home to the Camelot Motel. – Ben Miller

Random Fact Of The Week

THE Okapi, a giraffe-like animal with sebrastriped legs, is indigenous to only one section of forest in the Congo. Until the turn of the 20th century its existence – much like that of Sasquatch – was debated by the majority of the Western World.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Make all you can, save all you can, give all you can. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with won ton soup, and orange beef with vegetables and rice. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

T

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

HERE’S usually good live music in town on the weekends, but this past Friday Exit Zero had the good fortune to be bar-hopping in the midst of Cape May’s 34th Jazz Festival. We began the evening in Carney’s Other Room, where Japanese jazz singer Taeko was scheduled to perform three sets between 9pm and 1am (we have to hand it to jazz performers – they’ve got the stamina to match their technical chops). By the time we arrived (a few minutes late, it must be said) the room was already brimming – jazz fans packed the bar and listened intently from their tables. Taeko is a New York City-based singer who was born and raised in Kyoto. She mentioned that she was inspired by the traditional music of her homeland, and we were curious to see how she fused her upbringing with the traditionally American art form of jazz. The result was night of captivating singing – Taeko shifted comfortably from a soulful chanteuse in a smoldering rendition of “Crazy He Calls Me” to an electric, scatsinging dynamo with her interpretation of Sly Stone’s “Stand!” (which truly had us ready to jump from our seats). The singer paused occasionally to introduce her bandmates and offer anecdotes to a very receptive audience (that receptivity only a bit enhanced with drinks provided by Barefoot Wines). One of the best things about the jazz festival is that you rarely have to wait for another performance to start – you can just walk next door. After leaving from Taeko’s set very satisfied, we traveled a few steps down Beach Avenue and ended up in Cabanas, where the Jonny Hirsch Blues

Band was delivering a whole different sound. Hirsch, a 28-year-old singer and saxophonist, fronted a band bursting with funky, bluesy exuberance. If Carney’s Other Room was more of a moody lounge, Cabanas was one big, raucous party. Given the talented performers and their close proximity, we felt sure we’d discovered a sweet spot in the jazz weekend schedule. IT IS standard procedure: when entering into a passing conversation with an acquaintance you don’t know all that well, the conversation often goes the same way… You: Hey, how is it going? Them: Great, how are you? You: I’m doing alright. What have you been up to? Them: Not much. It is Cape May in November, what else can you say? How are you keeping busy? You: Oh, just working. Not too much else – just trying to stay busy. Them: Well, it was good to see you. You: You too. Take care. The conversations usually center on the same subject – that Cape May is dead this

³

time of year. Still, this couldn’t be further from the truth. We all had plans to get out to the jazz festival this past weekend. Performers had been scouted, schedules had been written, and we were prepared to see some worldclass performers. But, by the time the weekend rolled around we were all so worn out that the schedule seemed daunting. By Saturday the choice was whether to set out for Aleathea’s to see Demetria Joyce Bailey or simply lounge on the couch with a bottle (or two) of Woodchuck Cider. For some reason many of us have the mindset that because there is now room to park in Cape May there must be nothing happening. But when you think about it the summer is just one lovely balmy night after another, without TOO much in the way of entertainment (with some exceptions, naturally), whereas the months of September through December bring a variety of events which encompass entire weekends. And, for those of us who are still working full-time, dedicating an entire weekend to more activity can be overwhelming. All of the activity this autumn almost has the crew at Exit Zero looking forward to February. Almost. THINGS must be happening at the convention hall. How do we know? The city called Swain’s the other day, asking if they sold yellow caution tape. Swain’s, of course, does because they pretty much sell everything. And sure enough, it emerged that the city has accepted a bid to demolish convention hall and the solarium at a cost of just under $110,000. The work is expected to begin on November 22. I know, you’ll believe it when you see it, right?

Holiday Happenings In Cool Cape May

I

The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts prepares a packed calender of Christmas events

T’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the nation’s first seaside resort. Thanks to the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) and Cape May’s support of cultural and heritage tourism, our town has become a top Christmastime destination. The city is transformed into an old-fashioned winter wonderland for the holidays and celebrates the season with seven weeks of special events. Victorian homes, hotels, churches and inns decorate for the season with twinkling lights, boughs of holly and a wreath at every door. Santa arrives early to start the celebrations during Holiday Preview Weekend, November 19-21, but that is just the beginning: the festivities continue through January 2. Take a heated trolley ride to see the city’s twinkling lights, tour the famous Victorian gems decked out for the season, indulge with food and wine events, and celebrate the most wonderful time of the year in Cape May! There is holiday entertainment to please every member of the family. Unless otherwise noted, all events listed below are

One of many beautifully-decorated Victorian homes you’ll see in town this season.

sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). For more information on these events, call (609) 8845404 or visit www.capemaymac.org.

NOVEMBER 19–JANUARY 2 An Old-Fashioned Christmas Exhibit An exhibit of holiday traditions through the years. Complete with working LGB trains, trees, toys and more! At the Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. The Gallery is open daily; hours vary. Free admission. Cape May’s Designer Show House at Christmas Discover Cape May’s sixth annual Designer Show House, beautifully decorated for the holiday season by some of the region’s top designers. The historic Fairthorne Cottage will be open for self-guided tours daily from 1–4pm, plus Thursday and Friday evenings from 7–9pm. Tours can be combined with lunch and dinner packages. Each visitor will receive a full-color program book with information about the designers, products and vendors. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children. The show house will be closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. There will be no evening hours on December 24 and 31.

NOVEMBER 19–20 Cape May Stage presents “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)” You’ve never seen Shakespeare like this – 37 plays and 154 sonnets performed by three actors in less than two hours! This fast-paced comedy offers a hilarious and irreverent take on the Bard’s timeless tales. Imagine portraying Titus Andronicus as a cooking show, Othello in old-school rap style and all of Shakespeare’s histories transformed into a giant, winner-takes-all football game. This zany tribute uses puns and pop culture to create a rollercoaster ride of a show that is hysterically funny and slightly naughty. Performances are at 8pm on Friday and at 3pm and 8pm on Saturday. Performed at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse, corner of Bank and Lafayette. General admission is $35,

A Cape May County Thanksgiving Tradition

THE Sasquatch issue... Really? When are you going to do a real issue, like the Whale Issue? – Mr. Spouty Offy Whale {Spouty Offy Editor’s Note: We did a whale anjd dolphin issue a few years back, remember?!}

Early Birds 1 to 2:30 p.m. “Just Like Mom’s”

*** WHAT the hell is a Sasquatch anyway? And where did that name come from? – Cape May {Spouty Offy Editor’s Note: The term “sasquatch” is obviously an anglicized derivative of the word “Sésquac” which means “wild man” in a Salish Native American language, duh! Okay... we actually copied this from Wikipedia so no duh!} *** ISN’T the Abominable Snowman really just a frozen Sasquatch? – Cape May {Spouty Offy Editor’s Note: We are not YETI sure about that.} *** AND why do all BigFoots have two names? You know, Big Foot can be Big Foot or Sasquatch and the Abominable Snowman can be the Abominable Snowman or Yeti? Can’t we as humans just settle on one name for these mythical creatures? – Cape May *** DO I even need to write in Spouty Offy that Russell looks like Sasquatch? Russell is just a little taller! – Cape May *** HEY ladies, you know what they say about guys with big feet! – Sasquatch himself {Spouty Offy Editor’s Note: I heard that Exit Zero’s advertising manager wears a size 14 shoe!} ***

I THINK the whole myth of Sasquatch started when someone was smoking some funny stuff and saw a bear while camping. – Cape May *** IF I were Sasquatch I’d stay away from humans too because all they’d want to do is put me in a zoo or something. – Cape May *** BIG reunion coming up! Please join Sasquatch, The Loch Ness Monster, Champ, Chupacabra and a few aliens in the Congress Hall Ballroom next Tuesday at midnight! – Erma *** I THINK Chewbacca may have been a Sasquatch! – Cape May

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

HEN my boss asked me to hostess, I jumped on the opportunity. I was sick of my mannish serving uniform and sick of my ponytail smelling like almond-encrusted halibut. I looked forward to wearing a pretty dress, breaking out the lipstick, and trading in my clunky shoes for a pair of stilettos. The experience was far less glamorous than I’d imagined. Mostly, I spent the night calming down all the angry patrons who’d been waiting over an hour because the guests at tables three, four, and seven were getting too sloshed to finish their desserts and pay their bills. Things didn’t get any better when tables did eventually become available. A few couples celebrating special anniversaries had requested private, romantic spaces. I’d reserved the highly-coveted corner tables for these folks but when I escorted one such pair I got an appalled look, a nobodyputs-baby-in-the-corner kind of look. One woman told me that, not only could she not stomach a corner, she wouldn’t sit by the

rate game of musical chairs, I learned to start seating guests where I didn’t actually want them to sit. “We’re going to need to move,” one lady told me, pointing to where she’d rather be. I nodded, and she thought she’d gotten one over on me, that she was moving to a far superior spot. But I knew the truth; she was actually moving to the table everyone else had rejected, the table that she, too, would have rejected had I brought her their first. I’ve heard it referred to as GIGS, or the Grass Is Greener Syndrome. I think we all suffer from it, and I am no exception. I’m happy with my piña colada at the Rusty Nail until I spot the deliciouslooking margarita the girl next to me is sipping. I think I want to be single, until I see all the couples canoodling on the sofas in the Brown Room. I order banana pancakes at Uncle Bill’s, only to trade for the pumpkin ones on the next plate over. Most recently, I decided to trade in my shapeless shirt and coffee-stained apron for a pretty dress, until I actually had to walk a mile in another woman’s stilettos.

door, by the kitchen, against a wall, in a booth, near a heating vent, or in a heavily– trafficked area. “You’re welcome to hang from the chandelier,” I felt like saying. One large and in charge fellow demanded in his Italian accent that I seat him so his back would not be facing any of the other diners. Since he looked like he’d just come from filming an episode of The Sopranos, and I didn’t want to offend this Cape May godfather my first night on the job, I obliged him. He nodded, an unlit cigar dangling between his lips. It seems that most people want whatever table they can’t have, simply because they can’t have it. Exhausted by this elabo-

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

AM not proud of my Sasquatch-pelt cloak, let me tell you. Nor the tall hat made from the same pelt, or the fur-lined boots of the same species. Admittedly, I look fine wearing them all at the same time (when paired with my ivory walking cane and my dodofeather gloves) but there comes a time in a man’s life when conscience matters. One assumes there comes a similar time in a woman’s life, but I have yet to see that happen: I believe the female of the human species to be immeasurably smarter than the male, but at the expense of anything resembling a sense of fair play. Ladies do, in my experience (and I include my beloved and late Mrs D’Catur and my fearsome Ma D’Catur in this) to tend focus on what they want, and hell mend anyone or anything that gets in the way of that. Anyway, my moment came when I encountered a huge, wild, terrible Sasquatch in the woods near Cold Spring. I had already encountered a werewolf, three bears and a brace of Wildwooders and so was out of bullets and throwing knives.

S T I T C H by

Y S T I T C H

We both paused. I had never been this close to one of the beasts, taking them down more usually with a sighted rif le. He stood twice my height and five times my girth, with teeth as long as kitchen knives and arms knotted like clawed tree trunks. He was covered in foot-long matted black hair. I felt for my Bowie knife and prepared to die either the death of a warrior or that of a failed sprinter. The creature opened its mouth wide and said: “Oh, I do beg your pardon, sir, you gave me quite the fright

Extensive collection of cross stitch & needlework designs Custom Framing 315 Ocean Street, Unit 9 Washington Commons Cape May, NJ 08204 1-866-563-5399 • 609-898-9606 stitchbystitchcapemay.com

there, walking so quietly.” I dropped my knife in shock and he bent down and retrieved it with a paw so large it was like a heavyweight boxer holding a toothpick. He handed it back, very gently, and clapped another colossal paw on my shoulder softly, driving me a foot into the soft earth. “Are you all right, young man?” he inquired. “You’re rather pale… have you by chance met the terrible hunter who has decimated my people? I fear he has taken us below a sustainable breeding population, and we are doomed as a species lest we mate with those Wildwood people… and you and I both know that will never do. It might compromise the gene pool.” I recovered my composure and tried to hide my mortificiation by inviting the Sasquatch for tea. We chatted a lot, he and I, and from that moment on I was a changed man, a champion of oppressed simian creatures. I set Kevin (for such was the name he chose) up with a bath, a shampoo, a shave and a nice suit, and to this day he works in a local bar. You surely know him.

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover

T

An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz

RADITIONS are typically pleasant. My husband and I went to Boston last year for our anniversary and we had a fantastic time. We were so (obviously) pleased when my in-laws gave us an anniversary gift of a trip to Cape May this year. Andy had never experienced Cape May in autumn, and I assured him that it’s really a beautiful time of year to visit. Unfortunately, this tradition that we started has also brought heartbreak for us, a second year in a row. Last year, while in Boston, our beloved Chihuahua Betty passed away a day after our anniversary. It was very difficult for us because, although she was older, it was sudden and we were not scheduled to leave for three more days. This year, as I was preparing for our weekend Cape May retreat, one of our rabbits, Lucy, appeared sick. We adopted Linus and Lucy (originally Basil and Snowbelle) from Randolph Animal Shelter in February of 2005. We were married for only four months, lived in a condo where no dogs

were allowed, and being animal lovers, we really wanted a pet. Linus and Lucy were Dwarf Hotots, white with black spots, and very small. In the beginning, we would tote them around with us on vacation and holidays. Then we moved to our house, adopted dogs, and Linus and Lucy had their own bedroom (having a four-bedroom house, it seemed like a logical move). Everything was fine, until just two days before our trip, when little Lucy became listless and refused to eat.

I took her to the vet (not all vets care for rabbits — you need to find one that specializes in “exotics”) and found out that she had a condition called ileus, or an obstruction in her intestinal tract. Her body temperature was lower than it should be, and she was very weak. The doctor suggested a heating pad and a special food mixture. Three hours later, Lucy was gone. I was driving her to the animal hospital as her condition seemed to worsen. I was devastated. But somehow, I had to pull it together — we had a trip planned. I know everyone copes with loss differently, and it may strike some people as odd that we could just pack our bags and try to unwind. Honestly, I had no desire to go (and that’s saying a lot, because I love Cape May). Again, like with our dog Betty, this was sudden, unexpected, and occurring during a celebratory time. But it actually felt healing to get in the car, preoccupy ourselves with a book on tape, and drive down the parkway. As always, Cape May had the healing power we needed.

It all depends on how you put it together

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I broke up with my boyfriend last month. It was the right decision and I am moving on, but it occurs to me that the holidays are right around the corner and I’m alone. I know he’s not the guy for me, but would it be so wrong to get back together with him just for a couple of months? PS: This is not about gifts! I’m thinking family dinners, office parties, etc. Nobody wants to deal with that stuff on their own. – Lonely Girl Dear Lonely The Answer Lady finds your declaration that this is “not about gifts” somewhat suspect. Assuming you speak the truth, however, it’s simply not fair to reel this poor guy back in just so you don’t have to make small talk at the Thanksgiving table with Aunt Barbara. The very fact that

The Flying Fish Studio Open Daily at 10am

you have work festivities to attend and family members you are trying to avoid indicates that you are not, in fact, “lonely.” Yes, sometimes it’s awkward to walk into a party alone; on the other hand, there is a certain freedom involved in it, too. You have no agenda but your own. No fighting over whether you visit his family or yours on the major holidays! No standing around when it’s time to head home, waiting while he has “one more cocktail” with Cousin Phil! If your ex is truly on your mind this

season, send him a Christmas card and see what happens. Otherwise, leave him off the hook, enjoy your freedom, hang around the mistletoe and see who shows up. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I bought a condo in Cape May last spring – we live in New York, and we get down here whenever we can. We invited our Big Apple neighbors to visit over the summer. They fell in love with the place and you guessed it – now they want to buy a condo of their own, in our building! They’re lovely people, but this is our getaway! Any advice? – Must you be my neighbor? Dear Neighborly Holy cow – if you like these people enough to cross state lines with them, what difference does it make if they live down the hall? Neighbors are a series of random people in our lives whom we may not necessarily choose, but we’re kind of stuck with them, so if you happen to like yours, that’s half the battle. The Answer Lady’s advice is to get over to Cape May Linen Outlet and buy them a housewarming gift.

Activity Of The Week

I

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Tea for Two

N VICTORIAN Cape May, when the fall weather is sunny enough to draw you outdoors, but cold enough to make you happy to come back inside again, there is something special about teatime. Tea is more than a beverage – it’s an event. Afternoon tea was supposedly invented by one of Queen Victoria’s ladiesin-waiting, Anna, Duchess of Bedford (1783-1857). Courtiers during the 18th century ate big breakfasts, small lunches, and substantial suppers – but supper was served very late. The Duchess reported a “sinking feeling” in the afternoon, and requested tea and cakes in her room. Though the working classes had long cherished their afternoon “cuppa,” the nation followed the Duchess’ lead and added cakes and tiny sandwiches. Tea rooms and tea shops opened across the empire, and a new tradition was born. Of course, tea was an important beverage long before the Duchess came along – there was that brouhaha in Boston nine years before her birth; that fellow in 1492 who tempted his financiers with easy trade

routes for tea and spices; and the thousands of years of tea drinking by non-Europeans before the Duchess brewed her first pot. Tea offers comfort on a cold day, and Cape May offers some comforting places to enjoy it. The Carriage House Tea Room at the Emlen Physick Estate is one of those places. It’s the perfect stop after a trolley or house tour, when you’re already in the Victorian mood. The Carriage House offers a variety of teas, sandwiches and soups. Call ahead

for their hours, which are very limited in November and apparently unlimited in December. Your kids may already have a fondness for the Carriage House, thanks to those delightful Teddy Bear Teas, but you may want to remind them that you don’t have to drink tea at teatime. The Carriage House and its restrooms are easily accessible, and parking is no problem. The Butterfly Tea Room, located near the Exit Zero store and gallery, is another charming choice for tea, and you get to pick your own teapot. If you want to take the tea ritual with you, Tea by the Sea on Perry Street offers everything you need to create your own high tea at home. The scone mixes are idiotproof, and there are flavors to suit any taste – consider stocking up on the cinnamon for Christmas. If you’re surrounded by coffee drinkers, treat yourself to a pretty “tea-forone” cup. And, if you want to be privy to some confidential conversation from a tiny hostess, treat her to a tiny tea set. You and the teddy bears will get an earful. Next week: Candlelight Walk at Historic Cold Spring Village

The Dating Column

Stella Dixon’s take on romance at the shore – where the odds are good, but the goods are odd.

M

Y SISTER is getting married. As maid of honor, I’ve learned that selecting a dress, a venue, and a color scheme requires excruciating deliberation. Personally, I think if a girl can find the guy, deciding on a couple of flower arrangements should be a piece of three-tiered, vanilla sponge cake. Considering the sheer number of folks tying the knot lately, finding the guy doesn’t seem like it should be all that that hard, either. But committing to one person ‘til death do you part has always seemed a mind-boggling feat to me. Then again, commitment of any kind is difficult: I spend 20 minutes deciding between mouthwash brands. No one else seems to have this problem. While my girlfriends spend Saturday night looking over boutonnières with their betrothed, I am likely crying into my pillow while Boyz-IIMen plays on repeat. My single status makes me wonder if my standards could be too high. Recently, I read a study which found generic mouthwash to be just as effective as brand-name competi-

tors. I wondered: is being picky overrated? I didn’t used to think so. Ask any woman what she’s looking for in a man, and she’ll tell you it’s a sense of humor she values most. This is not something I have been able to understand. Who cares if a guy can tell a couple of knock-knock jokes if the ultimate punch line ends up being that he’s sleeping with his secretary? If it’s merely humor we’re after, we have set the bar quite low. I’m looking for smart, honest, kind and loyal: funny

I can get from the Ramblings column in EZ. But last week, decked out in yet another crinoline-lined bridesmaid dress, I doubted whether my expectations were realistic. I announced that I’ll no longer be seeking the dream guy. I’ll be shooting, instead, for the mediocre guy. I’ll settle for run-of-the-mill looks, second-rate smarts, and, so I don’t end up with a complete dud, a sense of humor. If I continue holding out for Prince Charming in Cape May County, I might end up an old spinster, my apartment full of fluffy cats and fluffier bridesmaid dresses. In the sprit of mediocrity, I agreed to a date with a fella by the name of Carl. Carl used three different slang words for female genitalia over the course of our Lucky Bones dinner, and when the bill came, he asked if I wouldn’t mind picking up the check. In Carl’s defense, he did tell a couple of so-a-nunwalks-into-a-bar jokes that weren’t too bad. Alas, I don’t envision any “I do”s in our future. There are certain things in life just not worth skimping on. Dental care is one; men are another. When it comes to oral hygiene and husbands, I won’t ever settle for generic.

The Movie Column

Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Due Date”

D

IDN’T I just write a glowing review about my new favorite actor, Zach Galifianakis? He is quickly becoming (if he hasn’t already become) A-listed by Hollywood. A couple of weeks ago, I went on and on about how fantastic he was in a film that got a limited run called It’s Kind of a Funny Story. Then I saw Due Date, a new film where Galifianakis is teamed up with Robert Downey Jr for a road trip movie. Yes, the road trip movie. It’s a formula used over and over to produce zany comedies, poignant dramas, and the occasional misfire (such as Due Date). Let’s look at just a few road trip movies that have really set the standard that Due Date sorely missed. There’s my personal favorite, Little Miss Sunshine, about a family of misfits who take a broken– down VW bus from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Redondo, California. Or consider Motorcycle Diaries, or Rain Man. What are the elements of a road trip movie? There must be a plausible premise as to why the road trip needs to be taken. In an age of air travel, you have to convince

Downey and Galifianakis strain the limits of credulity in “Due Date.”

an audience that there is a justifiable reason for two people to travel by car to a distant destination. Not having enough money for an airplane ticket could work, but it presents a host of other storyline troubles that will then need to be overcome. In Due Date the premise worked, although it was a little forced. Downey plays an expecting father who is kicked off an airplane for

being a suspected terrorist because of antics presented by Galifianakis’ character. The two ultimately are placed on the TSA’s “No–Fly” list and have to pair up to make the trip from Atlanta to Los Angeles. Also prevalent in many road trip movies is a sense of adventure. Here’s where the movie has to be careful. Well–crafted adventure and over-the-top antics are two different things. In Little Miss Sunshine the characters were so well–developed and the story so well–written that when the action began to get ridiculous, your suspension of disbelief was working in tandem with the plot twists – perfect execution. In Due Date much time was spent on developments that sped so far from my own sensibilities I was unsure if I could stand another leg of the trip. So ultimately, I’d pass on hopping in the car with these two in favor of renting one of the dozens of other road trip movies that follow a straighter map for better storytelling. If you’ve got a better film in mind, please email your favorite road trip movie to capemayfilm@hotmail.com. I’d like to build a list for our website.

RHETT is a really great guy: fun-loving, playful and very sweet. Rhett is just waiting patiently for a kind soul to rescue him. Bird Droppings

O

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

KAY you procrastinators, you locals, you people in the know. In case you didn’t notice, you just missed the best week of the year – which might explain why Seymore was MIA last week! It was the week that the stuff that doesn’t belong here shows up. Waifs. Extralimitals. Rarities. Vagrants. In a word... Good birds! Okay, that was two words. I gave you a bonus. But my point is that if you are at all interested in birds and particularly interested in rare birds, then early November – in fact the whole month of November – is your time of year. This, traditionally, is when a whole bunch of freak strays from distant parts turn up. Things like Ash-throated Flycatchers, Cave Swallows, Brown-chested Martins, Ivory Gulls.... Originating from farther west, farther south, farther north. If you’re talking Brown-chested

Martin, then you’re talking South America. Anyway, November has proven itself to be prime time for waifs. The local birding crowd will be out in force, searching. You can tune into their fortune by going online at www.birdcapemay.org and clicking on “Recent Sightings.” Why? You mean, why is November such a hot

time when the weather is getting so cold? Yes. Precisely. That is why. At least that is my theory. It works like this. In every generation of fish and fowl there are a percentage of individuals who take the path less followed. The road forks in the forest. You can count on 99.9% of this year’s crop of young to go one way – the traditional or “right way.” The remainder go the other. Something in their brain says not right, left. So that’s the path they take. Most of these pioneers don’t make it. Left is not right for their survival. But every once in a while you find a case where left works maybe even better than right, and the bird survives. When this bird breeds, it passes on its leftist tendencies to its young and they survive, too. And on, and on, and on... This is called “evolution.” But we don’t really care about the end game. We care about the third down and long – the birds that go way, way down field where they

Comedy Makes Way For The Holidays

T

ADVERTISING FEATURE

HE COMPLETE Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) roars in for its final performance on Saturday night, November 20! Our three comedians will be riding that roller coaster ride to your funny bone for the rest of this week and then the walls of the Globe Theatre will come tumbling down to make room for a giant sand-box that will house our next production of The Little Prince. PNC Arts Alive selected Cape May Stage to be part of an elite group of theatres to receive support from its five year, five milion-dollar arts initiative from the PNC Foundation. Through their support, Cape May Stage is producing a special ASL performance on Friday, November 19th. At this performance, signers will be at the side of the stage translating the antics of our cast in American Sign Language. This is yet another way that Cape May Stage reaches out to all members of the community so everyone can enjoy what you voted as “the best theatre in Cape May County 2010.” Thanksgiving is around the corner and one can always use a brief pause to catch one’s breath during the hustle and bustle of shopping. The Friday after Thanksgiving has been dubbed Black Friday because of the huge number of shoppers expected by retail establishments as the holiday shopping season gets started. At Cape May Stage, we call that Friday Opening Night! The Little Prince is Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s most famous novella and Cape May Stage brings that story to life in a groundbreaking produc-

Above: The last chance to catch the hilarious roller coaster of “The Complete Works of Shakespeare” is this Saturday night! Right: The premiere of “The Little Prince” marks the first stop on its journey to theatrical prominence – a holiday must-see. tion that is already scheduled to move on to bigger venues. The holidays bring out the child in everyone and this production celebrates that innocence. Little nuggets of wisdom are shared with the audience throught the play, like “One sees clearly only with the heart. The essential is invisible to the eyes.” Scott Hitz was on the production team of the Broadway smash hit Avenue Q and uses his expertise with puppets to tell this story in a whole new way. Cape May Stage creates seminal theatre. Work that begins here is often seen later in larger and more expensive venues. The best value for art and entertainment is right here in our little town.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 87 aren’t supposed to go. Like here. Back to my theory. So, what I think happens is that a whole bunch of insect–eating birds that go way down field wind up in places like New England. They all stand around, wondering where everybody else went, and by and by (like come November) it starts getting cold. All the insects die. The pioneers are forced to get out of dodge (aka New England) or starve. Some f ly south. They reach Cape May which, as we all know, stays pretty warm throughout November, even December, because we’ve got water all around us. For an insect-eating bird, Cape May is the last and best place to keep body and soul together. Anyway, that’s what I think. Supporting the transportation of birds to Cape May is the preponderance of cold fronts in November. If a bird decides it’s time to get back on the road, the winds are likely to ferry it south and east – hence, toward the coast. Birds hugging the coast eventually wind up getting caught in the big land funnel that is South Jersey and are directed here. Whether my theory does or does not hold water is irrelevant. The fact remains that November is the month that

good birds turn up. Look sharp. Look often. Look up. And look at www. birdcapemay.org – click on “Recent Sightings” – then check the weather – then head to Cape May. Or you could just stop by the Cape May Bird Observatory (the CMBO) – THE place for anything to do with nature. Located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point, the center is open from 9:30am–4:30pm every day through November. Ask any of our staff – they are always glad to help with anything you need – even things you didn’t know you needed yet. Check out the schedule of daily walks, pick up a free birding map and checklist and while you are there, don’t forget the newest books (including Pete Dunne’s newest Bayshore Summer – and Birds of Cape May – a beautiful array of photos just released by Kevin Karlson) and more. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
