The Police Blotter

Every week we feature quirky police reports from small towns across America. Found on the website www.smalltownmisfit.com. ATLANTA, GA: On Roswell Road, a 56-year-old woman said her neighbor sprayed bright purple powder on her front door, flowerpots and stairs. She said the incident stemmed from a spat at a homeowners’ association meeting.

YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we condemn such acts. We at Exit Zero embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and offer a weekly lesson in communication. Please note – this “Russian” is our phonetic interpretation. Dopeople in your country enjoy Charles Dickens’ works as much as the English-speaking world? Liudi v vashei strane uvlekautsa knigami Charlza Dikensa tak zhe kak i anglogovoriashaia chast mira? Here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Da, osobenno deti. U ego istorii vsega schastlvyi konec. Which translates to: Yes, but because they awalys have a happy ending, his stories are mostly enjoyed by children. – Tanya Zotava

A Story From The Past

AS CONVENTION Hall is being demolished, I figured I would address some misconceptions I’ve seen on Cape May message boards: After the 1962 Nor’Easter destroyed the grand Convention Hall pictured above, the city erected the current convention hall as a temporary measure while they searched for a way to rebuild a something as grand as the original. Built in under a year by city workers, the hall was less than half the size of the original and much less functional. – Ben Miller

Facebook Mystery Contest

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, taken by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know what inn is surrounded by such beautiful foliage, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a fullsize, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Random Fact Of The Week

THE Phrase “What the Dickens” is not dervied from the author’s name. The phrase was in wide use during his lifetime and resulted in Charles’ name being referred to as “queer” by a nameless critic. It dates back to Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J A man who trims himself to suit everybody will soon whittle himself away. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a chicken and vegetable stirfry. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

F YOU’RE looking to get into the holiday spirit as early as possible, Congress Hall has transformed from a summertime resort to a Winter Wonderland. Take a stroll on their grounds and you’ll see the halls decked with Christmas cheer: the columns are up-lit in alternating beams of white and red, several illuminated reindeer are grazing on the lawn (look closely and you’ll spot Rudolph consorting with the rest of the team) and a 37-foot Blue Spruce has been installed at the crux of the building, strung with colorful lights in anticipation of the December 3 tree-lighting ceremony. That event begins at 7:30pm with a performance from the Congress Hall festival choir. But the festivities don’t stop there – every Saturday through December 18 children can enjoy breakfast with Santa, story time with Ms Claus by the Christmas tree, and a holiday ceramics class. Winter Wonderland activities will also be available every weekend through January 2 – you can enjoy train rides, a hot chocolate bar and a little tented village. Congress Hall is also screening family-friendly holiday movies in the Harrison Room – this Sunday’s offering is Elf, starring Will Ferrell, a movie that (we’re a little shy to admit) had us shifting from laughter to sentimental tears in record time. Don’t forget that this Saturday you can enjoy the West Cape May Christmas Parade rolling down Broadway and around Perry Street. With performances from local dance troupes and marching bands, fire trucks strung with Christmas lights and enough good cheer to (barely) combat the winter cold, this parade has become a Cape May institution, largely thanks to the incredible

efforts of Charlotte Daily, the woman responsible for organizing this event for five decades. HANDEL composed his Messiah for Easter, but churches nationwide have chosen to perform it around Christmas anyway. You may not be familiar with the work (and no one blames you, since the entire piece is almost three hours long), but everyone with working ears knows the famous “Hallelujah” chorus, a segment of the Messiah so ubiquitous it often ends up as a punchline in TV commercials and cartoons. For the past 23 years, Cape Island Baptist Church has upheld the tradition of a Messiah singalong, bringing together amateur and professional musicians from all over South Jersey. This past Friday, the Mission-style church at the corner of Columbia and Gurney was packed with volunteer musicians and audience members – attendants began pulling out folding chairs for additional seating at the end of each pew. Since the whole work runs about as long as Titanic, Friday’s performance featured an abbreviated program of solo arias

³

interspersed with choral sections. The church provided scores for everyone to use during the singalong, and given the complicated vocal lines involved, the choir gave an incredible performance. They were led by director Nancy Robinson, who teaches music in the Linwood public schools. The choir was accompanied by a large contingent of instrumentalists, culled largely from local high schools and colleges. The solo performances provided a hushed counterpoint to more raucous choral movements – Lena Patterson’s rendition of “Come Unto Him” was delivered sweetly with careful attention to the Biblical text, and Chris Lorge’s “Every Valley” was delivered with all the polish (and considerable breath control) that the score demands. Highlight of the evening was when Herbert Balian approached the podium to conduct the rousing “Hallelujah” chorus. Balian has conducted the Messiah here for the past 22 years, and though he didn’t feel up to conducting the entire piece this time around, he agreed to guest conduct the most famous section. He commanded the singers forcefully, waving his fists and shushing the choir during dynamic shifts. Ruth Fritsch and Mildred Herman were responsible for organizing this large gathering of South Jersey musicians. Thanks to their efforts Cape May was ringing with song this Friday. Here’s to next year’s performance (when they may need a bigger venue...) SPEAKING of which, we are happy to report that there appeared a giant hole in the side of convention hall on Monday morning. We’re excited to see the progress on the new structure, and even more excited to see the great benefits the completed convention hall will bring to our town.

Holiday Happenings In Cool Cape May

I

The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts prepares a packed calender of Christmas events

T’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the nation’s first seaside resort. Thanks to the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) and Cape May’s support of cultural and heritage tourism, our town has become a top Christmastime destination. The city is transformed into an old-fashioned winter wonderland for the holidays and celebrates the season with seven weeks of special events. Victorian homes, hotels, churches and inns are decorated for the season with twinkling lights, boughs of holly and a wreath at every door. The festivities continue all the way through January 2. Take a trolley ride to see the city’s twinkling lights, tour the Victorian gems decked out for the season, indulge with food and wine events, and celebrate the most wonderful time of the year! There is holiday entertainment for every member of the family. Unless otherwise noted, all events listed below are sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org.

The historic Fairthorne Cottage will be open for self-guided tours daily from 1–4pm, plus Thursday and Friday evenings from 7–9pm. Tours can be combined with lunch and dinner packages. Each visitor will receive a full-color program book with information about the designers, products and vendors. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children. Customer Service

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

ESTERDAY I was sitting with a group of Cape May servers sharing our most memorable restaurant experiences. Each story was more shocking than the last, but mine is hard to top. At the time, I was working in a small BYOB owned by a woman named Dana. In the bathroom was a lamp, about four feet high, that Dana had purchased from a yardsale for two dollars. There was nothing special about it; with its chipped blue paint and wooden base, it looked like something that belonged in a little boy’s bedroom. One night, to our greatest surprise, a customer offered to buy it. She was an unassuming woman in her mid-30s, and she just wouldn’t take no for an answer. “How about three hundred dollars?” she asked, but Dana refused to sell. Two years later, on a hectic Saturday night, a waitress named Ally noticed that the bathroom lamp was missing. When she approached me about it, I brushed her off. I was busy, and some of my tables still needed to hear the evening’s specials.

“It’s got to be somewhere,” I told her. But Ally was sure someone had swiped it, and she was lit up about it, no pun intended. She reminded me about the lady who’d offered to buy the lamp two years prior. “I think that’s her,” she said, pointing to the unassuming woman on table four. “But Ally,” I said, “we would have noticed her walking out of here with it.” There was only one entrance to the tiny dining room, and no matter where one stood, the door was always in plain view. Ally and I looked from one another, to the restroom where the lamp had been. “A-ha!” Ally said. It was as though a light bulb, no pun intended, had gone on over

her head. She ran into the kitchen to tell Damien, Dana’s husband and the chef, that the woman on table four had put his lamp through the bathroom window. When the suspect excused herself for her fifth cigarette break, Damien followed her outside, where he pretended to call the chief of police. “I need an officer,” he said. “There’s a thief in my restaurant.” Before Damien could give a fake dispatcher an address, the woman broke. “I have your lamp!” she said, panicked. Then she ran to her brand new Mercedes Benz to retrieve the two-dollar contraband. By this point, every customer waited with bated breath for a glimpse of the infamous lamp and the woman who’d dared to steal it. They silently cheered on Damien as he kicked out the thief and her friends. Sometimes working with the public means encountering some seriously entitled clientele. This can lead to disheartening, if not comical, experiences. But working in fine dining, despite its drawbacks, never ceases to be enlightening, no pun intended.

The Old Fogey

A

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

H, POOR Tiny Tim. I knew him well, you see, and even introduced him to my onetime friend Charlie Dickens, who used to take his summer vacations in Cape May as a young writer. I remember the day they met, and I saved Charlie from a lifetime of writing cheap maritime romance novels, obsessed as he was by brutish seamen. At that time Tim was working in the bar of the Brown Room, and was one of the top earners based on his small stature and ability to nip through the densest of crowds with ease. That and the fact that he widely publicised his imminent death and used to prop his crutches against the bar to hammer the message home. Why, some nights he used to limp back to his lodgings towing his tips behind him on a small wheeled trolley. Of course, Charlie was a soft touch, and when our fine malts were delivered by this sliver of a boy, who coughed delicately into a lace kerchief as he blinked at us through doe-like eyes, I could see Charlie melt. Charlie actually adopted Tim, and

wanted to give the lad all of the comforts imaginable for his remaining time, and the two moved into a fine old mansion on Beach, where they lived like brothers. While here, that summer and the fall and winter that followed, Charlie wrote some of his best works based on our fine city and the folks who inhabit it. I was of course the inspiration for David Copperfield, or possibly Ebenezer Scrooge (I forget which), and in the original draft of A Tale of Two Cities, the cities in question were Cape May

and Wildwood, being changed only when Charlie recognised that one would wait a hundred lifetimes without the prospect of social change in Wildwood. Of course, all good things come to an end and on a cool watery spring day that followed the harsh winter, little Tim slipped away one morning. He did so at 5am, leaving with a laundry sack filled with Charlie’s money, valuables and share certificates, and took the coach to Atlantic City, where he was reunited with his whore of a wife and they f led to Paris. All he left was his consumption medicine, which turned out to be merely watered-down rum, and his crutches, which he had never needed. I felt a little responsible and luckily I found out before Charlie rose from his slumbers, so I tampered a little with the evidence to make it seem like Tim had passed away in his sleep. Charlie was distraught, but better that, I think, than he learn the truth and never write again. A year later, while on vacation in France, I ensured that Tim was indeed no longer with us: I like a neat ending …

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover

I

An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz

FEEL that I spend nearly the entire year waiting for the holiday season. And for me, “holiday season” starts October 1, after the children are tucked safely back at school and the Halloween preparations are in full swing. If you know anything about me, you know I prefer the winter to the summer, and that I love Cape May when the days are short just as much as those endless summer nights. Certainly there are times when the nostalgia of years past brings melancholy notes that wear thin the holiday spirit. But I savor it all: the wistful memories mixed with the feverish anticipation, bustling preparations, frustrating event coordination, decorations dripping from every stationary object in my home. I simply love it. As much as I’m reluctant to let this time pass, I’m always looking ahead to the next celebration. As I prepare my Thanksgiving fare, tearing bread for stuffing and slicing apples for pie, I am daydreaming about Christmas cookies, strolling through Rockefeller Center, and wrapping gifts for loved ones. Weeks ago, after

arriving home from Halloween weekend in Cape May, Andy and I agreed that this year, Christmas would be better spent at home. We decided to resume our tradition of spending New Year’s Eve in Cape May. Living in North Jersey, there is a constant undercurrent of pressure to go to New York City for New Year’s Eve. The coaxing always remains the same: it’s the experience that makes standing in the cold for seven hours worth it; you’re only twenty minutes away from the city; it’s not that cold.

Then there are the parties. There’s always someone who decides to host a party that’s just far enough from home to become a controversial distance: do you have the cocktails or abstain? Aside from feigning a pervasive illness, it’s difficult avoiding a friend hosting a New Year’s bash. So I dialed up our favorite New Year’s spot, reserved a room (where two years ago we met our very own feline friend, who we affectionately called Creamsicle and fed him an absolute feast while we were there). We made our reservations for the Merion Inn, our cozy, festive spot for ringing in the new year. No matter what seat you choose, there is a “mock” countdown complete with hats, noisemakers, and clocks strategically staged at the incorrect time. We will then exit the restaurant, the cold wall of air hitting our faces, and hit the streets looking for our next celebratory spot. Make no mistake—it’s cold in Cape May this time of year. But I still haven’t found a better way to spend the first morning of the new year — walking on the beach in Cape May.

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady Our neighbors invited my husband and me to a holiday party next weekend – but no kids allowed! We have two kids under the age of ten. What kind of Scrooge doesn’t want children at a Christmas party? Can I ask if my kids can come? – Mama Bear Dear Mama Good grief, dear lady, in the name of all that is civilized, do NOT pick up the phone and ask a hostess if you can bring children if the invitation says “no children.” The Answer Lady is assuming that the invitation does NOT say “children welcome, except Mama Bear’s.” Once upon a time, children were ‘seen and not heard.’ While the Answer Lady is not suggesting we take our cue from that somewhat barbaric sentiment, she believes that ours has developed into a rather “kid-centric”

The Flying Fish Studio Open at 10am Thursday Thru Monday

culture. Our job is to love, nurture, educate, and discipline our children, to teach them right from wrong, and ultimately, to make their way in the world without us. It does not dictate that we spend every waking moment entertaining them. You are a person in your own right, outside your role as a parent, and you had a social life before your children came along. You should also spend alone time with your spouse now and then. It will make you a better person, which will make you a better parent.

Accept occasional invitations to grown-up events, and remember: other peoples’ lives don’t revolve around your children, and yours shouldn’t either. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I are childless by choice. His brother, wife, and their four children will spend Christmas week with us in Cape May. I love them dearly, but the thought of all those little feet pitter-pattering has me freaking out. Help! – Clueless Dear Clueless Do not panic, gentle reader – children can smell fear. The Answer Lady suggests that you pack up anything you don’t want broken, defaced with crayon, or vomited upon and store it in a locked closet. Next, buy as many chicken nuggets as your freezer can comfortably hold. Then appoint someone to take charge of getting the children out of the house often – to Uncle Bill’s for pancakes, for instance, or on a field trip to the Wetlands Institute, followed by several laps around the beach to tucker the little buggers out. Keep your sense of humor, your wits about you, and enjoy.

Activity Of The Week

B

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: House Tours at Christmastime

AH! It’s easy to condemn Ebenezer Scrooge for calling Christmas a “humbug,” but he was part of a long tradition of downplaying the holiday. Puritans in England had banned all Christmas celebrations in 1644, and even when the holiday was once again legal, it was considered a bit decadent. Young Ebenezer remained alone at school during Christmastime and knew little of mince pies, holly wreaths and good cheer; the generous Christmas celebration organized by his employer, Mr Fezziwig, was likely his first. Yet the 1843 story of Scrooge’s transformation into a man who knew how to “keep Christmas well” gives us a peek into the homes of Victorians at Christmastime. You can peek into Victorian homes this Christmas without any ghostly guides. Cape May lights up at Christmastime, and it’s a sight no Cape May lover should miss. The restored houses are decorated with gingerbread, after all, and they are equally Christmas-y inside. Start your planning with a visit to the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts

booth on the Washington Street mall (or on their website, if you are planning ahead.) The Candlelight House Tours include churches, inns, refreshments and HEATED trolleys. You will appreciate the warmth – the same sea breeze that tickled you in summer can knock you out in December. Taste your first cup of wassail – even if you don’t like the spicy punch, the cup will be warm. The price of the tour includes the exhibit: “An Oldfashioned Christmas: Holiday Traditions

2nd Annual Holiday Diaper Drive for the United Way of Cape May County NOVEMBER 15 - JANUARY 3 “We had such a great response [last year] ...” says Julie Emery, Wilsey’s Marketing Manager/Realtor. They collected 1,700 diapers and wipes, and they are hoping this year will be even more successful. Diapers will be distributed throughout the year through the United Way food pantry and its partner agencies.Donations can be dropped off Monday-Saturday, from 9am-5pm and on Sunday, 10am-2pm. Diapers in sizes 3, 4, and 5 are most in demand.

501 Lafayette Street, Cape May NJ 08204 Toll Free: 877-884-8907 • Local 609-884-1007 Fax 609-884-4407 • www.WilseyRealty.com

through the Years” in the Carriage House Gallery. Other options include Fairthorne Cottage – this year’s Designer Show House – currently decked out in Dickensian glory. The Lamplighter Tour features self-guided evening tours of five inns. A private home, The Cherry House, built in 1849, is fully restored and features hand-painted murals. Even if you miss its scheduled tours, take a stroll by. Hughes Street would make Mr Fezziwig feel right at home. Each house tour offers something different. Perhaps you’ll be charmed by a collection of hats or period dolls. You’ll be intrigued by a tiny back staircase and imagine the servants who used it – how hard they must have worked to keep these ornate households running. Generations of renovations have left exterior walls inside, windows to nowhere and pretty little nooks. You may hear details of the restoration and find yourself inordinately grateful for SheetRock™ and fire extinguishers. Keep Christmas well with a Cape May house tour! Next week: The Lighthouse

The Dating Column

Stella Dixon’s take on romance at the shore – where the odds are good, but the goods are odd.

I

’M ONLY twenty-five, but I’ve done my fair share of bronzing under a Cape May sun, and I’ve got the crow’s feet to prove it. When I received an invite to a skin care party last week, I decided it couldn’t hurt to de-wrinkle. When I arrived, I joined a circle of women discussing pore size over a bottle of Merlot. The hostess welcomed me by poking at my face. “I’ve got just the zit cream for that bad boy,” she said, drawing everyone’s attention to the blemish. “And what are we going to do about those sun spots? And look at those droopy eyelids!” Hoping that the party’s focus would soon move away from my face, I busied myself by sorting through a table of lipsticks. I tried one on without reading the label and, within a minute or so, my lips began to burn. I panicked, ran to the kitchen sink, and rubbed water over my mouth. The other women couldn’t help but laugh. Apparently, I’d picked up the lip-plumping stick. The tingling I felt, the hostess explained, was merely the collagen-enhancers at work on my “sexy pout.”

“No worries,” one of the girls told me, “you could use some fuller lips, anyway.” I walked away from the party with $80 worth of anti-wrinkle, pro-plumping gels. I’m a sucker, I know, but I live in a world where Lindsay Lohan botoxes. When even pubescent girls are going plastic, it’s hard not to stress over droopy eyelids. I felt pangs of buyer’s remorse, but I couldn’t help but wonder if the products hadn’t done the trick; three days after the

party, a cute Cape May bachelor named Mark asked me out for dinner. On the night of our date, I excused myself while Mark waited for me in the lobby of the restaurant. In front of the bathroom mirror, I checked for food between my teeth, patted my droopy eyelids, and analyzed the size of my pores. I applied some of my new lip plumper, and strutted in front of the empty stalls practicing my sexy pout. When I returned to the lobby, I found Mark in hysterics. I turned around to see why – a double-sided mirror. I was humiliated. During such moments, a girl’s got two options; she can either laugh at herself, or she can cry. I decided to laugh along with my date at my own foolishness because I’d done quite enough pouting already. There’s a lot of pressure on women to look a certain way – younger, prettier, poutier – and I often succumb to it. But if we obsess over things as inconsequential as lip size and sunspots, we can end up looking pretty silly. If dating in Cape May County has taught me anything, it’s that sometimes, a girl’s got to work with what she’s got.

The Movie Column

Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, offers a holiday movie preview

S

O MANY films, so little time! How is it at the holiday season we find time from all the visiting, gift giving, office parties, and general frivolity to get to the movies? But somehow we do — evidenced by Hollywood frantically offering up a healthy helping of films, definitely buffet–style. I’ve got my selections picked out, but now I’m looking for your review. Here is our holiday preview — tell us which films you’ve seen and what you thought about them at capemayfilm@ hotmail.com. We’ll put your comments in an upcoming edition of The Movie Column! Tangled: High praise from critics and audiences so far for the latest Disney offering, a retelling of the Rapunzel fairy tale with recording artist Mandy Moore voicing the lead role. The trapped princess lets down her hair with a runaway bandit (played by Zach Levi) in an attempt to escape. Plot sounds simple enough. Love & Other Drugs: Critics might not be singing this film’s praises, but they aren’t exactly trashing it either — and most admit Anne Hathaway is fantastic (but so many

Hathaway and Gyllenhaal garner mixed reviews in “Love & Other Drugs”

of us in Cape May already know this!). A pharmaceutical salesman (Jake Gyllenhaal) peddling a male enhancement drug meets the woman of his dreams (Hathaway). Burlesque: This is the first film for Christina Aguilera, but most critics are not star-struck enough to give any positive feedback. Aguilera plays a woman who moves to LA to make it big, helped along the

way by a veteran performer played by Cher (who says, “whatever you do, don’t dare call me a veteran”). There are mixed reviews for Faster, a Dwayne Johnson action flick, high praise and even higher box office sales for the latest Harry Potter experience, and good (although not great) scores for DreamWorks latest animation feature, MegaMind. Then there are those films you might have trouble finding that are being released this week to good reviews. The King’s Speech tells of how King George VI (Colin Firth) needed to be coached by an eccentric speech therapist. Black Swan with Natalie Portman is a psychological thriller set in the New York City’s ballet scene (an unlikely pairing of genre and backdrop). And in I Love You Phillip Morris, Jim Carrey plays a con man who meets his true love (Ewan McGregor) in prison. Once released, Carrey tries to break out McGregor. This film won praise at Sundance, but had trouble getting distribution. Do drop us an email about what you’ve seen: capemayfilm@hotmail.com. Look for your review in an upcoming column!

The Cape May Crossword

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle created by us! By Dan Mathers. SO YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: Charles Dickens. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. ACROSS 1. He was the abused, underpaid, overworked clerk in Dickens’ most famous Christmas novel. 3. This crutch-carrying, invalid child is famous for his line, “God bless us, every one!” 6. Despite coming across unpopularity for his staunch opposition to slavery, Dickens still met with this president on his first visit to America. 10. Arguably Dickens’ best known work, this novel has become a holiday classic and has been retold countless times. 12. The Dickens family moved to this city when Charles was three, and it would become a prominent feature in his work. 15. Charles Dickens’ serialized works made him the most popular and successful English writer of this era. 16. Often called “the merry old gentleman,” this character put a roof over the heads of his juvenile pickpockets in return for stolen goods. 17. He was the money-hungry humbug who

had a serious change of heart after being visited by three Christmas ghosts. 19. This was Dickens’ second novel, the story of an orphan who escapes a workhouse to join a gang of juvenile pickpockets. 20. This is the shortened name for Dickens’ first novel. It featured a character named Sam Weller who many credit for Dickens’ popularity. 21. This novel follows the life of Nell Trent, a resident of the building from which this book draws its name. DOWN 2. It is a good thing Charles was successful, otherwise he may have struggled to support this many children. 4. This humorous novel follows the title character as he tries to support his mother and sister after his father’s death.

Characters that transcend – 1 and 3 Across

5. Jack Dawkins earned himself this nickname for being such an adept

pickpocket. 7. Because many of Dickens’ works were serialized, most sections ended with one of these to keep writers coming back. 8. This novel follows the title character through a cruel stepfather, factory work, running away and a name change on his way to adulthood. 9. Depicting the plight of the French peasantry, this novel is set in both London and Paris during the French Revolution. 11. Dickens’ tenth novel, commonly called this, focuses on the difficulty faced by 19th century workers in a fictitious, industrial city named Coketown. 13. Dickens died at age 58 several days after suffering from one of these and failing to regain consciousness. 14. Although they would be separated later in life after Charles fell for Ellen Ternan, she would remain Mrs. Dickens. 18. Charles often wrote under this penname. It was actually a nickname originally attributed to his youngest brother Augustus.

Bird Droppings

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

T’S winter. NO IT’S NOT! I hear you screaming (in your mind). You’re thinking like a beachnik. You’re thinking like a calendarophile. You really ought to go outside and get a face full of reality, Bucko. The birds are saying: “It’s winter,” and when it comes to knowing seasons, my money is on the professionals. Take Turdus migratorious for instance. Take what? Turdus migratorious. Big, beefy, Turdidae with slate gray backs and rufous underparts. Oh, sorry, I didn’t realize I was speaking birderese. Robin. Saw one just the other day in fact. I’m sure you did, too. There are about a million of them in Cape May County. In fact, there are more American Robins in Cape May in winter than there are during the summer. But if you did see one, chances are you didn’t see it strutting across a lawn. Chances are you saw one picking berries off a tree (like a holly tree). Yep. Robins have switched over to a diet of fruit. Worms are what they do in

spring and summer. Fruit is what robins eat in winter. Just this morning I was standing on the front lawn staring at an overcast sky. Trying to find the wedge of white that was the source of the Snow Goose calls falling to earth. Then I noticed hordes of American Robins all heading north. North! You mean they’re migrating

again and already? No. They were heading north to feed. Forage. The birds roost in the tidal marsh south of where I live in Cumberland County. They were leaving their roost and climbing into the sky. South leads out over the Delaware Bay (not a good place to find a holly tree). North leads to a forest just chock–filled with holly trees. This will be the morning pattern all winter. Robins lifting off at dawn. Heading north to feed. Ergo, it’s winter. This morning was, by the Robin calendar, the first day of winter. The Snow Geese were a resident, not a migrant, f lock too. The birds were heading west, not south. And while most of the Snow Geese that winter in our coastal marshes haven’t arrived, these birds were already settled in their winter pattern. If you go to places like Cape May Point State Park, Higbee Beach, the South Cape May Meadows, the sheets and sheets of songbirds that washed across the sky all

ODAY is the day that Cape May Stage joins the most august theatres in the state. We have been nominated by the People’s Choice Awards to be the “Favorite Professional Equity Theatre” in New Jersey. We are competing against much larger and wealthier theatres like Paper Mill Playhouse, McCarter, Two River Theatre, George Street, and Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. This paper proclaimed that “Cape May Stage has gone from being an enhancement to your beach vacation to being a destination all its own.” The word has spread and now we need you to vote online at JerseyArts.com/PeoplesChoice and look for us at “Favorite Professional Equity Theatre” and “Favorite Arts/Theatre Camp”. Voting begins TODAY. Winners will be

Bottom Left: Joel Rooks returns to Cape May Stage this coming Spring to reprise the role of George Burns in “Say Goodnight Gracie.” announced in February and presented at the Governor’s Conference on Tourism in March 2011. We are depending upon your support, and the current play on our stage should erase any doubt about who is the favorite professional theatre in the state. With December comes the end of the year and the grand finale of an extraordinary season for Cape May Stage. We began the season with the world premiere of Class, which continues in productions in California in 2011. We end the season with the world premiere of The Little Prince, which will continue with productions at other theatres in 2011. There will also be a Pay What You Can Night on December 12 so that everyone can see this spectacular production regardless of ability to pay. Just come to the theatre on Sunday, December 12 and any seat that is not sold will be yours for any price you can afford. It is PNC Arts Alive’s way of giving a holiday gift to everyone in our community. With gifts in mind, this is the time to give the gift of theatre to friends and family. A gift subscription gives throughout the year and next season promises to build on the momentum we have created. Favorites like Say Goodnight Gracie will be on the roster and comedies like Steel Magnolias and dramas like Red (which won the Tony Award last season) are being considered.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 87 fall are mostly gone. Gone with the season. Most winter species don’t travel great distances during the day. American Robins are an exception. White-throated Sparrows, Hermit Thrushes, Yellow-rumped Warblers, etc. lead pretty sedentary lives, roosting close to where they forage during the day. Energy in winter is too precious to waste. Humans are just beginning to get what birds have been putting into practice all along. Other signs of the season? No, not Christmas carols. How about bird song? There is little to none – compared to the incessant clamor on the radio, in the supermarket… Yes, you are still hearing bird calls. They are different – single note utterances. In fact, about the only birds still singing are Carolina Wrens and possibly Northern Mockingbirds (which do maintain territories all year). Mockingbirds may have already clammed up for the winter. In winter, aside from the occasional White-throated Sparrow and Fox Sparrow, birds are not given to song. It’s a winter day as I write this and it’s a winter sky. Made all the more wintery by the winter patterns of birds. Good thing I like winter. Going to see a lot of it in the weeks ahead.

If you want to enjoy some of nature’s bounty, stop over to the Cape May Bird Observatory and pick up a schedule of our winter walks. The CMBO is THE place for anything to do with nature. Located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point, the center is open 9:30am–4:30pm every day except Tuesdays, December through March. Our staff and volunteers are always glad to help with anything you need. Check out the schedule, pick up a free birding map and checklist and while you are there, don’t forget the newest books (including Pete Dunne’s Bayshore Summer – and Birds of Cape May – a beautiful array of photos just released by Kevin Karlson), and more. Pick up a bargain from the vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, binoculars and spotting scopes. Have a nature enthusiast on your gift list? Pick up a gift card, redeemable at any of our New Jersey Audubon Centers throughout the state. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit us online www.BirdCapeMay. org – where birding Cape May is only a click away. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
