Sluice Creek Gallery at the Cape May Bird Observatory “A Bayshore View” celebrates the southern New Jersey wetlands with regional folk art, wood carving, pottery, paintings and photography. During the holiday season the multi-media show will be augmented with a presentation and sale of folk art decoys. The exhibit runs through December 23, so make sure you stop in before it’s too late! Sluice Creek Gallery hours at the Cape May Bird Observatory are 9:30am-4:30pm every Tuesday through Saturday. For additional information, contact Susan Zipper at (609) 861-0700. Pilot House Family Friendly Trivia Night, 7pm

Ghosts of Christmas Past Trolley Ride Members of the East Lynne Theater Company regale you with classic American ghostly tales (including Hawthrone’s “The Snow Image”) told in a dark trolly while the twinkling lights of the decorated homes are seen through the windows of the heated vehicle. The “spirited” 30-minute ride departs at 7:45pm from the Washington Street Mall information booth. Tickets are only $10 for adults and $7 for children. Call (609) 884-5404 for more information. Cape May Stage presents “The Little Prince” Everyone’s favorite children’s book has been turned into a wondrous production for the whole family. Based on Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s fable, this tale reminds us to hold on to what is truly important. Designer Michael Shupbach (Avenue Q, Sesame Street) creates the characters in this production. The show starts at 8pm at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse on the corner of Bank and Lafayette. Admission is $35. For tickets call Cape May Stage at (609) 884-1341. Open Mic Night at the Pilot House This weekly event had a great turn-out last Friday and a few stellar performances. If you’ve got an itch to play or sing, head over to the restaurant at 142 Decatur Street, sign up with Barry, and bring your A-game. They’re always looking for fresh talent, even younger performers. If you just want to come and listen, well, all you have to do is order a drink, sit back and enjoy. Performances start at 9pm, so come a little early if you’re looking to sign up. Christmas Day Celebrate! Haul out the holly, fill up the stocking, climb down the chimney and slice up the fruitcake (or perhaps a nut-covered cheese log, if you’re not watching those holiday calories). However you celebrate – that includes ordering Chinese and going to the movies – make sure you enjoy yourself. You deserve it. Happy holidays from all of us at Exit Zero. Coming Up...

A Mistletoe Mystery at the Physick Estate Enjoy an interactive holiday mystery performance – “The Stolen Gift” – in this Victorian mansion, authentically decorated for the Christmas season. It is Christmas Eve, 1918. A war bride receives a telegram bearing good news about her husband in France. But what should be a joyous holiday goes horribly wrong when she discovers her most prized possession, a diamond necklace, has been stolen. Her search for the culprit takes her on a surprising, emotional journey that ends in a way she could never have anticipated. Come take part in this memorable holiday drama, penned by Ray Crew. Tickets for adults are $25, $20 for children. For more information, call (609) 884-5404. Merion Inn Live Music, 5:30pm Pilot House Complimentary bar snacks during football games

Gallery Exhibit: An OldFashioned Christmas For a look at Christmas a few generations removed (before every toy required batteries), explore this exhibit of holiday traditions through the years. Complete with working LGB trains, trees, toys and more! The exhibit can be seen at the Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. The gallery is open daily, hours vary. Admission is free. For more information call (609) 884-5404. Cabanas Wing Night featuring 35 cent wings, $2 Bud & Bud Lights, NFL, Fun. Winter Wonderland at Congress Hall Christmas may have ended, but winter continues, so we can all be thankful that Congress Hall extends their Winter Wonderland festivities through January 2. Stop by the hotel to enjoy train rides on the Congress Hall Express, sip on hot chocolate, and browse an assortment of shops set up in the tent village. Train rides begin at 10am, and don’t think you’re too grown-up to take a ride – half the Exit Zero team fit into one car more-than-comfortably. For more information, call (609) 884-8421. Copper Fish Chef Geoff on the radio, 101.5fm from 9am-noon Ugly Mug Terrible Tuesday with DJ Jon K

Seventh Annual Burns Supper On Thursday, January 27, Cape May will celebrate the birth of Scottish hero Rabbie Burns at the Ugly Mug. This is a sell-out gig every year, and for good reason: you can look forward to Scottish singalongs, poetry recitals, and bagpipe playing from the Irish Pipe Brigade (yes, we’ll let the fact that they’re Irish slide in this case). Plus, you’ll get a heaping helping of haggis (or fish and chips, if you’re weak of stomach). Tickets are $30 dollars, and they’re going fast, so call Exit Zero at (609) 7708481 to reserve your spot!

Did we miss anything? Call our global headquarters at (609) 7708479, fax us at (609) 770-8481 or email jon@exitzero.us.

Don’t let its size fool you – the Congress Hall Express is also for grown-ups.

The Police Blotter

GRASS VALLEY, CA: A 2:10pm caller from the 10000 block of Bettcher Court reported a neighbor was yelling at him. The neighbor called and said the first caller was swinging a baseball bat at his friends. The first caller then called back and said the neighbor’s friends were trying to run him over. Deputies went to the scene to mediate the matter. – The Union

Learn Russian With Tanya

YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act. We warmly embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and to this end offer a weekly lesson to help you communicate The “Russian” we are printing is our phonetic interpretation, to make it easy to follow. Do children in your country love candy as much as American kids? Deti v vashei strane liubiat sladosti tak zhe kak i amerikanskie deti? Here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Da, vzroslye liubiat sladosti tozhe. U nas est mnogo shokoladnyh konfet napolnenyh likerom. Which translates to: Yes, and adults love them, too. We have lots of choclate candies filled with liquor. – Tanya Zotava

Weird Word Of The Week

Stotting When an animal (like a gazelle surprised by a lion) jumps straight into the air and extends all four legs out straight.

A Story From The Past

Mark Kulkowitz

THIS early 1900s shot of the Carroll Villa Hotel on Jackson Street is the reason we now have the Mad Batter restaurant, which led the way for modern Cape May’s many gourmet restaurants. When Harry Kulkowitz bought the hotel in 1974, he hoped to use the porch for a restaurant, but the city wouldn’t allow the necessary awning because it wasn’t ‘historic’. Thanks to this picture, Harry was able to prove the historic basis for an awning and the Mad Batter was born. – Ben Miller

Facebook Mystery Contest

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know what inn these people are exiting, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Random Fact Of The Week

CANDY has long been used as a scapegoat for bad health. It was once blamed for the spread of polio and is now blamed for obesity. But, the truth is that candy makes up for only 6% of the added sugar in an American diet – soft drinks and juice make up 46%.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Meet your opponent halfway. You need the excercise. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a pint of pork lo mein and a Philadelphia roll. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

T

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

HE annual Christmas fundraiser at Cabanas was a great success. We were impressed by the pile of gifts shored up by the entrance – enough toys to stock five or six Christmas trees at the very least, and since all these gifts will benefit the children of the Cape May County Special Services School District, they’re sure to put a big smile on someone’s face come December 25. Since we didn’t have any trucks, Nerf guns or dolls lying around the house (at least not any we were willing to part with) we paid a $5 admission fee, the proceeds of which will benefit Family Promise of Cape May County – a local organization that provides housing, education and transportation for homeless families in our area. It’s unusual to have to elbow for space in Cabanas in the winter, but in this case the crowded room was an indication that folks in Cape May are happy to come together for a good cause, and even happier when they can do so while enjoying live music, a buffet spread, and happy hour specials at the bar. Laurie Johnson, of Family Promise, said she was thrilled with the turn-out. “It was great to see so many from the community turn out for such a special cause,” she said, and added that she was honored that Cabanas would choose their organization as a charity to advocate. “The Cabanas staff were a tremendous help all night,” she said. Payton Bowman of Cabanas was equally pleased – “We love seeing the bar this busy, especially when it’s for a great cause,” he said. We left feeling warm inside, both from the sight of a community that gives back, and a selection of food and drink that kept us insulated against the December cold. THIS Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church, the Rev Jim Richards described

a recent holiday comic he’d read. It depicts a family driving through town and noticing commercial holiday signs like “Don’t forget the Christmas lights!” and “Don’t forget the batteries!” In the last frame, the family drives by a church with a sign that simply reads: “Don’t forget.” We respect that not everyone makes Christ the focal point of Christmas (and there are plenty of folks who don’t celebrate Christmas at all), but if you were looking to remember the roots of the holiday this Sunday, you would have done well to attend the Christmas Festival of Lessons and Carols at Episcopal Church of the Advent on Washington Street. The service of lessons and carols is an ancient custom that details the story of the nativity interspersed with Christmas carols – this year’s event was a new addition to that longstanding tradition. Parishioners, choristers and bell-ringers from both the Episcopal Church of the Advent and the First Presbyterian Church came together on Sunday night to create an evening of moving words and song. The Advent Bells, Cape May County Recorder Consort, and the Joyful Ringers opened the

program with a selection of Christmas favorites, followed by a choral processional to “Once in Royal David’s City” with solo performance by soprano Karen Buckley. The Bible readings were delivered simply and clearly, aided by the poetry of the King James Bible. The evening featured a premiere performance of “Comfort Ye My People,” composed by Cape May local Jane Sbarra, and a memorable rendition of “Still, Still, Still” by the combined bell choirs of the Presbyterian and Episcopal churches. The event was organized by the organist and choirmaster of the Episcopal Church, Carol Obligado, and presided over by Reverend Richards, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church, Reverend Daniel Hall, and Reverend Dr John Mitchell, Rector of the Episcopal Church. At a time when religious division seems the norm, it was reassuring to see two of Cape May’s churches join forces for an evening. For many of us, Christmas is about coming home, and Sunday’s service, featuring timeless readings and familiar carols, provided just that feeling of comfort. SINCE this is the second but last issue of the year, we need to remind you to buy tickets for the Seventh Annual Exit Zero Burns Supper, at the Ugly Mug on Thursday, January 27. It’s become a sell-out event and no wonder. Where else can you be treated to brilliant bagpiping from the men of the Irish Pipe Brigade, Scottish poetry and song, the wonderful dish of haggis (or fish-n-chips if you prefer), and a lovely, warm and fuzzy night of appreciating the best things in life? Tickets cost $30 and you can buy them either by visiting us at the shop on Sunset, calling us at (609) 770-8479 or online at www.exitzero.us. From us to you, have a very merry Christmas.

Holiday Happenings In Cool Cape May

I

The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts offers a packed calender of Christmas events

T’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the nation’s first seaside resort. Thanks to the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) and Cape May’s support of cultural and heritage tourism, our town has become a top Christmastime destination. The city is transformed into an old-fashioned winter wonderland for the holidays and celebrates the season with seven weeks of special events. Victorian homes, hotels, churches and inns are decorated for the season with twinkling lights, boughs of holly and a wreath at every door. The festivities continue all the way through January 2. Take a trolley ride to see the city’s twinkling lights, tour the Victorian gems decked out for the season, indulge with food and wine events, and celebrate the most wonderful time of the year! There is holiday entertainment for every member of the family. Unless otherwise noted, all events listed below are sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org.

One of many beautifully decorated Victorian homes you’ll see in town this season.

trees, toys and more! At the Carriage House Gallery at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street. The Gallery is open daily; hours vary. Free admission. Cape May’s Designer Show House at Christmas Discover Cape May’s sixth annual Designer Show House, beautifully decorated for the holiday season by some of the region’s top designers. The historic Fairthorne Cottage will be open for self-guided tours daily from 1–4pm, plus Thursday and Friday evenings from 7–9pm. Tours can be combined with lunch and dinner packages. Each visitor will receive a full-color program book with information about the designers, products and vendors. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children. The show house will be closed on Christmas Day, so stay home and relax! There will be no evening hours on December 24 and 31. M

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

OST everyday people I know eat everyday food, like tuna casseroles, peanut butter and jelly, or sloppy joes. But thanks to the “Top Chef” craze, everyday people now have the culinary vocabulary of Anthony Bourdain, and they’re all-too-willing to show it off. Enough television, it seems, and anyone can be a foodie. “Hmm,” the man on table five says, “I was really hoping to see some yuzu-f lavored tapioca pearls on the menu.” I shrug apologetically. “How are these short ribs prepared?” he asks. “Braised,” I guess. I’m not sure what it means to braise something, but I’m pretty sure this guy doesn’t know, either. “Is the couscous Israeli or Lebanese?” he asks. I contemplate telling him the couscous is Italian, which is why it’s puffy like Snooki’s hair and so common on Jersey shore menus. “I’ll check with the chef,” I say. “And this Halloumi you’ve got on the cheese plate,” the man continues, “is that

sheep’s milk?” Oh, for Pete’s sake, I think to myself. I haven’t the foggiest idea what kind of animal Halloumi is from, but I decide to throw this guy a bone. Perhaps he’s hoping to impress his date, and this will help his cause. “Sure is,” I tell him. My customers play this guessing game often. They remind me of the elementary kids my sister, Kate, teaches. During a math lesson, Kate holds f lashcards with multiplication tables on them in front of the class. My guests look at their risotto dishes like a third grader looks at 9x7, and they’re just as thrilled when they figure it out. “Is it basil that I taste in here?” one

woman asks me, “Could it be?” Her eyes are wide with anticipation. I know there is no basil in the risotto dish, but I tell her I will check with the chef. I walk out of the dining room, spin around three times, and walk back in. “Gold star,” I tell her, “You got it!” She claps her hands as though she’s guessed the cost of a washing machine on “The Price is Right.” As a waitress, I spend so much of my day discussing seasonal ingredients, the rate at which a demi-glace reduces, and the f lavor profile of squid ink, that these things no longer seem exotic. I understand the thrill of an adventurous menu, but at the end of a shift I’m not craving Halloumi cheese. Instead, I want fries from the North Cape May McDonald’s. Eating from the dollar menu does not a foodie make, but it’s nice crawling into bed with a cup of Hi-C and the unpretentious trans-fat of a quarter-pounder. They don’t call it comfort food for nothing. After a hard night at work, nothing tastes better – except, maybe, for yuzu-f lavored tapioca pearls.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

WAS never allowed candy (or “sweets”, Ma D’Catur called them disdainfully) as a child. Once a year, on the Queen’s birthday, we were allowed to queue outside a department store that sold impressive candied treats from all over the world, and all of the poor children were lined up in front of a huge candy cane. A penny was collected from each grubby urchin and one by one, we were hustled past speedily and allowed to take a single lick of the candy cane as we went by. If you were first in line, the advantage was that the cane was clean and fresh, the downside was that at a near-run, one’s tongue would, if not wet enough, stick to the candy like glue, leaving behind tiny strips of f lesh. If last, of course, an entire mouthful of sweet candy goo could be collected in the mouth, but that mouthful included the saliva and assorted fillings/ milk teeth/stray buttons of the score of rickety kids who had gone before. It was not that we were poor, you understand: Ma D’Catur was a shareholder in the East India Company and had made

her fortune from forcing opium on the Chinese. But she was never a fan of spending on things that would bring what she scornfully described as “pleasure.” Ma had had a strict Scotch Calvinist upbringing, where smiling was not encouraged except at Jesus, and laughter was swiftly followed by tears, courtesy of a leather strap applied to one’s bottom. Of course, once I broke free of Ma, I was able to compensate for a life empty of candy, and indeed I overdid that, locking

myself away in my room at Gordonstoun School for Errant Boys for a week with a year’s allowance worth of treats. There were sherbet dabs, chocolate buttons, gobstoppers, ropes of liquorice, boiled sweets, sugar drops, and fancies whose names were not known and whose sugary potency was almost lethal. I consumed the lot – much in the style of Augustus Gloop – and then spent a week lost in a sugar-induced trip that had me thinking I could f ly, and I had long conversations with Ali Baba, who (it transpired) lived in the wallpaper with his 40 thieves. When finally I regained consciousness, I was curled up hugging the base of Nelson’s Column in London, naked as a baby and from the damp patches all around the stonework, I had been licking it for a good few hours. From that day on, I allow myself only a single bonbon on Christmas Day, and I have my faithful manservant Kitchener on hand with a stout cudgel, with an order to club me senseless should I start f lapping my arms and strip off.

Exit Zero talks sweets with Joe Bogle of The Original Fudge Kitchen

IRST-TIME visitors to Cape May stock up on saltwater taffy, but insiders know that fudge is truly our town’s sweetest export. Exit Zero’s Jon Roth (who has an ancestral sweet tooth – his grandfather owned Roth’s Candyland) sat down with Joe Bogle, co-owner of The Original Fudge Kitchen, to learn just how he handles those overzealous fudge-samplers. How many pounds fudge do you sell in a summer? About 250,000 pounds. That’s our six stores in Cape May, Wildwood, Stone Harbor and Ocean City. What’s your busiest holiday? Definitely Easter. We make an Easter egg out of chocolate nut fudge dipped in chocolate. The biggest sellers are coconut, buttercream and peanut butter Easter eggs. Are there any occupational hazards in your line of work? Yes. We whip all the fudge by hand, and you can get a stiff back really fast. You’re on your feet for eight to ten hours. People say it’s just for show, but we’re very serious

about our fudge and we whip it daily. Are people greedy with fudge samples? People used to take handfuls, but by the grace of god the Board of Health ruled that we have to hand them out. We still give them as many as they want, but people aren’t shy about taking samples – some people will take the tray out of your hands and start walking down the mall with it. What’s your favorite candy to eat? My favorite candies are licorice allsorts. It’s like a licorice mix. We sell it at the

store if you want to give them a try. How did the Fudge Kitchen get started? My brother Paul and I started the Kitchen in 1972. I was 17 and he was 15 and we opened a store in North Wildwood. We acquired our candy know-how working for Mr Sagel – he had a store called Sagel’s Candy Kitchen on the beachfront, and he was a competitor and friend of your grandfather George Roth. When we began business in Cape May we bought a candy store called Baxter’s. The owner was interested in retiring, and I think because we were so young he was interested in selling to us. The next place we bought was Roth’s Candyland. Mr Roth was ready to retire, and he asked us to come in and take over. Buying Roth’s Candyland was the most important thing we ever did for our company. Your grandfather had a year-round business, and until then we were mostly a summertime operation. If someone looks in the mirror and says “Candyman” five times, will you appear? You only have to say it twice. I’ll be there.

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover

B

An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz

RUCE Springsteen’s rendition of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” on December 12, 1975 begins with “It’s all cold down along the beach. The wind’s whipping down the boardwalk.” How can I think of anything other than the Jersey shore and Christmas whenever I hear this song? It reminds me of how much I love Cape May throughout the seasons, and especially during the colder months. If Cape May has its own magic to begin with, it is only amplified around the holidays. It seems that all memories begin with just that – something as simple as a song that brings us back to another time. Around December, there are so many more reminders of days past. The sound of time passing rings loudly – and the prospect of new beginnings loom ahead. How can you optimize your enjoyment of this season? You just need to be a little adventrous and invest in a warm coat. Anyone who shakes their head at me in dismay (“What?? Cape May in December??”) has usually ventured into

New York City at the same time, which is not widely known for its warm winters. I’ve had my share of December evenings in New York so I’m open to the prospect of finding solace in another tourist hotbed of fun… complete with thermal shirts and parkas. What type of fun can you expect? Snuggle up, grab a cocktail and enjoy some live entertainment. Check out the Boiler Room, in the basement of Cape May’s famed Congress Hall, Cabanas Beach Bar and Grill on Beach Avenue (Thursdays

through Sundays) for music and/or some NFL action, or the Mad Batter on Jackson Street on Fridays and Saturdays. Looking for a good, old-fashioned tavern setting? Check out the C-View Inn at the corner of Texas Avenue and Washington Street for ribs, pizza, wings, and (what else?) football or Marq’s Pub at the Marquis De Lafayette Hotel and all-you-can-eat Taco Night on Sundays. This may not make you beachready, but it’s certainly crowd-pleasing in the frigid air! Still looking for indoor activities? Check out one of my favorite spots…The Cape May Stage and see The Little Prince through December 30 (Thursday through Sunday at 8pm, Saturday and Sunday at 3pm). Treat yourself to Cape May Day Spa on Jefferson Street, get inked at Cohwen’s Ink Emporium at 1210 Bayshore Road, or buy a duvet at 20% off at the Cape May Linen Outlet on Park Boulevard in West Cape May. There’s so much to do, you may not even notice the wind whipping down the boardwalk.

Why choose when you already have it all?

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I’m headed home for Christmas break and I am sad. This will be our first Christmas since my grandmother passed away, and it’s just not the same without her. I know my family will talk about her and it will just upset me even more. what can I do to snap out of this? – Grieving Grinch Dear Grieving Please accept the Answer Lady’s condolences on your loss. Don’t try to “snap out” of grieving your grandmother. Snapping out of the grieving process is one of those things that sounds good on paper, but isn’t all that realistic. The Answer Lady remembers the first Christmas after the death of her beloved mother; actually, she really doesn’t – it was kind of a big, sad blur. Allow yourself to grieve in your own way, and tolerate the grieving of your rela-

tives, even if it’s different. If their talking about her becomes too uncomfortable, remove yourself from the situation: either take a little walk, or just go to your happy place (the Answer Lady’s happy place is by the fireplace at the Brown Room). Your grandmother’s absence will always be felt, but this is no reason that someone so young should dread the holidays. For now, please try to think of what your grandmother would want – she’d like you to be happy at Christmas, the Answer Lady is quite sure.

So try, for her sake – and know that next Christmas will be a little easier. Dear Answer Lady My family has decided that instead of buying gifts for everyone, we’ll just buy for the children in the family this year. I’m so upset about this! – Angry Elf Dear Angry The Answer Lady would like you read the previous letter. Twice, preferably out loud. Then remove your head from your behind, march down to the Zoo Company clutching your list, and buy two of everything while you count your blessings. You’re welcome, and Merry Christmas. Dear Answer Lady What goes under the tree of the person who has everything? – Giftless Dear Giftless Oh, come now, dear – everything? As Steven Wright said, “you can’t have everything. Where would you put it?” Presumably this lucky person already has an Exit Zero subscription, but an Exit Zero store gift certificate is just the ticket for any stocking.

Activity Of The Week

W

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Ring in the New Year

E’VE been dropping the ball in Times Square for over a hundred years, but the best thing about America’s traditions is our willingness to customize. Americans adapt ideas from cultures around the world to meet our individual New Year’s Eve needs. Hate to procrastinate? Celebrate early with the Australians. Feeling overwhelmed by Christmas clutter? Follow the Japanese Oshosatu and spend New Year’s Eve cleaning out the “dust” of the old year. Show your Danish friends you care by throwing broken dishes at their front doors. Eat 12 grapes with your Spanish neighbor, and carry your empty suitcase around the block if you hope to travel. Copy the Scots – champions among New Year’s Eve celebrants because of “Auld Lang Syne” – and bring salt and coal to your neighbors as you go First Footing. (It’s lucky if a tall, dark-haired man enters the house first, and apparently redheads should just stay home.) Most cultures hint that what you do at midnight sets the tone for the year, so this year, ring in the new year in Cape May.

If you’re looking for quiet romance, consider dinner at the Ebbitt Room, The Washington Inn, or the Copper Fish. The more gregarious among you may choose the Grand Hotel, with its six-hour open bar, banquet, dancing, and midnight toast; or the Glitter Ball at Congress Hall, with its 10-piece orchestra, party favors and fivecourse dinner. Partying with the kiddies? Try an early dinner at the Merion Inn, complete with music, balloons, party hats and a 6pm

countdown. Rock your New Year’s Eve at Carney’s, Cabanas, Marq’s Pub, or the Boiler Room. Stay home with Scrabble and choose Carson Daly, Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest, or Snooki on television, then treat yourself to a New Year’s Day brunch at the Peter Shields. Recognizing a great idea when you see it – it’s the American way. We borrowed Guy Lombardo and polar bear swims from the Canadians. The Mummer’s Parade in Philadelphia began with Swedish, English and German immigrants in the 1700s. In 1890, the Tournament of Roses parade began as a way to promote the “Mediterranean of the West” – the accompanying chariot races were later replaced by football games. So choose your celebration! Eat ringshaped food for luck. Put a quarter on your windowsill and bring it inside in the morning. Spend time with friends, share a kiss and make a resolution. Ancient Babylonians pledged to return borrowed farm equipment and your neighbor wants his snow blower back. Isn’t this a great country? Happy New Year! Next week: Winter Wonderland

Tis the season... for Murder, Mystery & Mayhem ...you’ll love

Stella Dixon’s take on romance at the shore – where the odds are good, but the goods are odd.

W

HEN I was a little girl, my mother would play a singalong tape in her station wagon on the way to school. I hummed along with the lyrics which cautioned, “Be careful little mouth what you say.” My mom would echo the sentiment. “Remember, Stella,” she said, “your words have power.” I’d like to believe this is true, but I find myself scoffing at the inspirational speakers on TV who beseech the members of their studio audiences to repeat positive affirmations: I am unique, I am special, I am loveable. It’s hard for me to imagine that by simply saying something with enough conviction, the universe will make it happen. I gave it a shot myself once. For a week, hoping for that self-fulfilling prophecy, I walked around repeating: I am unique, I am special, I am built like a freaking Victoria’s Secret model. Unfortunately, my legs never got any longer, and I became the black sheep in a family of believers. The last time my sister, Dawn, was in town, I had two glasses of wine and an emo-

tional breakdown. “I’m going to be alone forever,” I told her. “I’m going to be the pathetic old woman who forms imaginary relationships with daytime TV characters.” “Stop putting that negativity into the universe,” Dawn told me, “Or you really will end up alone.” “Right,” I said, “the universe.” But the next day, I wondered if I couldn’t use an attitude adjustment after all. Maybe my family was right, and my words have

more power than I give them credit. Perhaps the only women who end up alone are those who expect to do so. As I got dressed for a blind date with a guy named Dale, I decided to try the positive affirmation thing. “This guy will not be a loser,” I said. “He’ll be charming. He’ll be kind.” Then, just for good measure, “He’ll look like Don Draper.” Take that, universe. To my surprise, Dale was all the things I’d been hoping for – charming, kind, and attractive. He was also gay – common knowledge, apparently, to everyone but his parents, the folks who’d set us up. By the time our appetizers hit the table, Dale had folded my napkin into an origami swan and apologized for wasting my time. I couldn’t help but laugh. At least the universe has a sense of humor, I thought. I ended the night feeling pretty silly for believing that by saying a bunch of words out loud, I might have the power to alter the cosmos and will myself the ideal man, or anything else for that matter. After all, a bunch of words is merely that – a bunch of words. Of course, I’d never say that too loudly…

Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “General Butt Naked”

Y

OU can say you saw him at the Cape May Film Fest first! Greg Henry, award-winning filmmaker and recent guest of the 2010 Cape May Film Festival, is going to Sundance! And guess who’s getting the New Jersey premiere of the film he’ll screen at Park City? Greg’s production company, part2 pictures, will screen its latest indie documentary, The Redemption of General Butt Naked. This film has been in production for over five years by Eric Strauss and Daniele Anastasion, and follows the rebirth of Liberian warlord-turned-preacher General Butt Naked. During Liberia’s 14-year civil war, Joshua Milton Blahyi (aka General Butt Naked) murdered thousands. Backed by an army of children who were generally naked, addicted to drugs, and carrying AK-47s, he committed the most horrific crimes against humanity — killing, raping, and even cannibalizing across the country. Then came his conversion to Christianity, when, as the production company says, General Butt Naked “surrendered his

weapons at the height of his power, leaving an army of baffled fighters behind. In an unsettling portrait, cameras follow Joshua as he relentlessly crusades to redeem his past. This is just the beginning for this film about faith, good and evil, and the power of redemption.” Greg’s father, local restaurant owner and philanthropist Ed Henry, says his son made

a notation on his Sundance application that he will screen the film first in the state with us. “There were over 800 films submitted to Sundance for 16 slots in his category,” says Ed, “It’s great that Greg was able to make one of those slots.” Check out more of Greg Henry’s unbelievable projects at www. part2pictures.com. In other film news, the Golden Globe award nominees have been listed for the 2011 event. Typically seen as the award ceremony topped only by Oscar, this program is hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and covers several areas of entertainment. Whenever the nominees are announced, it reminds me of all the films I haven’t seen. So now I’ve got Blue Valentine on my list of must-sees (staring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, both nominated for a Golden Globe for best acting). The King’s Speech, The Social Network, and 127 Hours are among some of the films receiving multiple nominations. Look for more reviews and previews here in the Movie Column and make sure to send your insights to us at capemayfilm@hotmail.com.

TANK is a three-year-old boxer mix who will need a home with someone who is breed savvy. During his temperament test he did tend to guard his food so he must go to a home with children who are 15 and above. Tank has also had some training as he knows the commands sit, speak, and paw. All he needs now is a stable home with someone who’ll spend time with him. Adoption fee is $95.

«

MIAMI, a young 10-month-old, came to our shelter after being found by a good samaritan. Miami just doesn’t do well around other dogs but she was fine with the cats in the home. As with any young pup Miami is energetic, playful and loves attention. She’s definitely going to need some training and lots of exercise but with time and patience she’ll make a great companion. Adoption fee is $95.

«

SASSY is a fairly well-behaved puppy. She knows the commands down and sit and will do so automatically. Since she is still so young she is still going through her teething phase and can be a little mouthy but it isn’t anything serious. Even though she is a very sweet and loving girl we recommend she go to a home with older children. If Sassy sounds like a match for you drop in and meet her today. Adoption fee is $95.

The Cape May Crossword

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for Exit Zero! By Dan Mathers. SO YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: candy. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. ACROSS 5. These tangy, taffy-like candies come in individually wrapped strips and can also be a name for stupid people. 8. These decorative confections often coat chocolate and derive their name from the French for “having no equal.” 9. These chewy, chocolatey candies have been made in the US since 1896 and were the first penny candy to be individually wrapped. 11. Shaped like caricatures of children, these soft, chewy candies are sour at first, then they’re sweet. 17. Sometimes you feel like a nut; sometimes you don’t. Almond Joy’s got nuts, but these don’t. 18. Invented in Philadelphia in 1928, this gum was included in military rations during WWII. 19. Created by a dairy farmer who went on to be shipping foreman for Hershey, there is no wrong way to eat this candy. 20. This brand of fruit-flavored sweets have a hard, sugar shell and a chewy center. They claim to taste like the rainbow... doubtful. 23. Sold by Willy Wonka Candy Company, this candy is ridiculously chewy. The name is said to infer that the candy’s texture is the embodiment of silliness. 24. This oblong, fruit-flavored chewy candy is named after rhyming male names. It is a kosher candy. 25. These chewy, cinnamon-flavored candies might be too spicy for some to handle. 26. Remarkably similar to tablet-style pills in

They’re festive AND delicious... see 22 Down.

both shape and texture, these candies won’t increase your intelligence. 27. Hungry? Why wait? Grab some nougat topped with peanuts and caramel then covered in chocolate. 28. These hard candies resemble a tube of lipstick much more closely than they do a standard lollipop. DOWN 1. These sweets came about in 17th-century France. The children eating them were so happy they shouted “Good! Good!” 2. The name for these irregularly shaped rocks of sugar also refers to studious people with unique interests. 3. Shaped like flat-bottomed teardrops, these candies are wrapped in foil with a thin strip of paper protruding from the top. 4. These hard candies come in shapes like banana, orange, cherry, strawberry and lime. 6. It’s a giant, cherry-flavored diamond. 7. This fruit-flavored hard candy has a name

that could also refer to a happy person who breeds cattle for a living. 9. Although strawberry-flavored, these sweets are often refered to as licorice candy. 10. Available in yellow, orange, red and pink, this soft, chewy taffy candy often gets stuck in your teeth. 12. Sharing a name with a Peanuts character (though spelled differently), this candy was first produced in York, PA. 13. These chocolate-coated, malted milk balls are produced by Hershey. 14. The generic name for this Willy Wonka candy is jawbreaker. 15. This licorice candy is covered in either a red or white candy shell to form a capsule. 16. Bird Droppings

A

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

DMIT it. You want a new focus on life. Which, in the world of birdwatching, equates to a top-of-the-line binocular. Swarovski, Zeiss, Leica… you know. One of those instruments that a birder can shed an imperial gallon of drool over in the past year alone. Attention uberglasse lusters! This is your time. This is the moment the iron is hot. This is the perfect alignment of give, take, desire, generosity, good cheer, and end-of-the-year indifference that makes NOW the perfect time to wrangle your way into high-end ownership. It’s also a very cost saving time (providing you are a CMBO or NJA member) and that’s all I have to say about that. Here are a few surefire techniques that are almost guaranteed to get the glass. Technique #1 – Sell shares of stock in binocular futures. Design and print up shares of My Super Glass Stock. Make sure PT Barnum’s (or one of those famous Ponzi scheme mavericks) image is on the cover. Sell them to all your friends. Heck,

they’ve all been trying to figure out what to get you for the holidays anyway. Sell them shares of your great joy (to shore up their own mean and petty lives). Win/win and best of all, you get the binocular you want. Technique #2 – Hold your breath until you get the glass you want or until you die. This is a very effective technique. It’s

gotten more kids BMX bicycles and more trips to Disney World than all other techniques combined. IMPORTANT: Make sure there is someone present who really cares if you die before holding what you promise to be your last breath. The effective employment of holding your breath until you die technique requires a willing partner. Also, keeping the end game in mind, make sure that person in attendance has the financial wherewithal to buy the glass you want. It would really stink to be told, just as you lose consciousness, “sorry but I can’t afford them.” Waste of a last breath. Technique #3 – Sulk. Sulking is a very good way of guilt-tripping your way into a great binocular. It takes time, days even weeks – and there are none left before Christmas – but there is almost nothing you can’t get with a good, tenacious sulk. Sigh a lot. Look downcast. Appear to take no interest in beer, reality TV, your iPhone, text messages, life.

Celebrate The Holidays With Theatre ADVERTISING FEATURE

ERRY Christmas from all of us at Cape May Stage. This is a time to celebrate the wonder of the season. What better way than to embrace the innocence of childhood with a production of The Little Prince? There is an added performance tonight (Wednesday, December 22) and the show performs Thursdays through Sundays at 8pm until December 30. In observance of Christmas, there are no shows on December 24 and 25th so that our artists and theatre staff can be with their families. This new production features the title role being played by a puppet designed by multiple Emmy Award-winner Michael Schupbach. We have brought an artist from Los Angeles in to do the voice of the little prince. Marc Petrosino who was most recently on Broadway in The Little Shop of Horrors joins cast member Lenny Haas who plays the all-important role of the aviator. Scott Hitz has been working on this show for a decade and chose Cape May Stage for the first production. PNC Arts Alive will sponsor a special performance on Wednesday, December 29 with a sign interpreter for the deaf community. We close the season the following day (December 30) with a double header - a matinee at 3 PM and an evening show at 8 PM. There is still time to buy a gift subscription for 2011 and that season promises to continue the momentum with hilarious comedies and poignant dramas and new versions of popular plays with the writer in residence at Cape May. Next season William Mastrosimone will be here to tweak his script of The Woolgatherer which was a hit in the 80s at Circle Repertory Company. This new version will have its premiere at Cape May Stage!

Bird Droppings ? From Page 87 Mutter, as you look mournfully out the window: “If only I had an Ultravid... an Ultravid would save me from the pit of despair and depression”. At night, toss... turn... and scream (at odd and annoying intervals) “SWAROVSKI!” Draw the names Leica, Zeiss, and Swarovski on the bathroom mirror with toothpaste. Or try writing in blood.Just a finger prick will do. No need to open a wrist. And don’t prick your index finger. You’ll need it to move the focus wheel on your new binocular. Technique #4 – Beg. Plead. Promise. After all, it’s all you want in the whole world; all you’ve ever wanted. It’s not a lie! You won’t begin to want the high-end spotting scope you also covet until you get the binocular of your choice. When all else fails, just use the money you’d use on other people’s gifts and buy the glass for yourself. I mean if they don’t care whether you are terminally depressed, deprived of your greatest need, or hold your breath until you die, why are you buying them presents? Buy the glass yourself and do everyone a favor.

Drop all the hints you can!

It’s not too late to stop over to the Cape May Bird Observatory and find the proper equipment to relieve your depression. BUT YOU NEED TO HURRY! The CMBO will be closing at 4:30pm on Thursday, December 23 until January 2, 2011. Clueless as to what high-end optics

cost? Not a problem, just stop over to CMBO’s Northwood Center, at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point. THE information spot for anything to do with nature, the center is open 9:30am-4:30pm except Tuesdays, December through February. While you are there, pick up a schedule of daily walks, pick up a free birding map and checklist to include with your Christmas gift. Don’t forget the newest books, including Pete Dunne’s newest Bayshore Summer. Pick up a bargain from the vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, clothing, hats, jewelry, and more. Gift cards are available in any amount, have no expiration date or fees, and can be redeemed for merchandise or programs at any New Jersey Audubon Nature Store. If you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit us online www.BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Author of several books on and about nature he has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
