Learn Russian With Tanya Greater Cape May Historical Society
A Story From The Past YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we would condemn such an act as extremely xenophobic. We at Exit Zero warmly embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and to this end offer a weekly lesson to help you communicate. Please note – the “Russian” we are printing is our phonetic interpretation. Do you make champagne in your country? V vashei strane delaut shampanskoe? Here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Net, shampanskoe proizvodiat tolko v Shampane, vo Francii, vse ostal’noe - eto igristoe vino. Ves god vy sprashivali menia glupye voprosy. Which translates to: No. Champagne is only made in Champagne, France – the rest is sparkling wine. You’ve really been asking me stupid questions all year. – Tanya Zotava
Weird Word Of The Week
Bodacious Not just a word for 90s surfer dudes, this word means to be blatant, remarkable, audacious and impressive.
IN HONOR of the snow and ice blanketing Cape May at the end of 2010, I present this shot of the boardwalk in 1936, taken during a nasty ice storm. The boardwalk extended to what is now the Coast Guard base and was in the process of being repaired when the storm hit, freezing everything solid. This was taken directly in front of the Christian Admiral, then the Hotel Cape May. Note the lack of beach, which remained the case until beach replenishment in the 1990s.
Facebook Mystery Contest
KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know which fishman’s favorite this is, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-yearold nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
THE pressure in a bottle of champagne is 90psi. To put that into perspective, the pressure in your car’s tires is usually around 35psi. Dom Perignon champagne derives its name from the Benedictine monk who discovered champagne.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Laughter is the shortest distance between two people. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a pint of pork lo mein and a Philadelphia roll. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
ALL it the Miracle on Decatur Street. What could have been a devastating fire that could have taken lives, as well as a precious historic building and a muchloved restaurant and bar, was foiled by the teamwork of firefighters from Cape May, the Coast Guard, West Cape May, Town Bank, Cape May Point, Villas and Erma. The fire broke out at the Merion Inn on Thursday morning, two days before Christmas, and ripped through the second floor of the Victorian building. Owner Vicki Watson was rescued unhurt, along with her partner, musician George Mesterhazy, but Vicki’s brother, Erik Watson, who bartends at the Merion, received second-degree burns to his body and is still listed in a critical condition at Temple Burn Center. “We’re hopeful Erik will be okay in the long run. He is in the best burns center in the region, so he is in good hands,” said Vicki, who then added the remarkably good news that she was planning on reopening the Merion this week, conditional on city permits. Vicki seemed calm and upbeat despite going through such a traumatic ordeal. And she was quick to pay tribute to the people who saved their lives and their business. “The fire departments worked so well together – we are so grateful to them.” The firemen went back into the building to save Vicki and George’s dogs, Amra and Taylor. Their three cats – Spicy, Moffatt and Tilly – were also rescued. “Poor Taylor. He’s a rescue dog, only 18 months old, and already he’s been badly hurt after being run over by a car and now this,” said Vicki. The couple have been overwhelmed by the reaction of local people. “We’ve had so
many offers of places to stay that we could live for free in Cape May for the rest of our lives! Then there have been offers of food and anything else we need,” Vicki told us on Monday. “We’ve had people offering to help us go through the rubble to salvage anything valuable. It’s just been amazing.” Vicki added that construction inspectors from the city as well as the county’s health department were also quick to react and help with the re-opening of the restaurant. Our thoughts are with Erik and we wish him a speedy recover. In the meantime, cocktails and dinner in the Merion Inn, with its classic vibe and perfectly moody lighting and ambience, will seem all the more special. AND now… your last reminder (in the pages of this magazine) of THE big event of Cape May’s winter calendar. We are referring to the SEVENTH Annual Exit Zero Burns Supper, held at the Ugly Mug on Thursday, January 27. This event has become a sell-out gig every year, which we’re very pleased about because proceeds go to Cape May Stage’s Preservation Fund, which was set up to maintain
the theater company’s beautiful building on Lafayette Street. For those readers who don’t have a clue what we’re going on about, the event celebrates Scotland’s most famous poet, Rabbie Burns, who wrote, among many other things, “Auld Lang Syne.” And the reason we celebrate him is because EZ’s publisher is Scottish, which might strike you as a tenuous reason for having such an event, but just go with it. The event features Scottish singalongs, poetry recitals, and bagpipes played by the men of the Irish Pipe Brigade. Those burly men doing laps around the bar while pumping out such classics as “Amazing Grace” and “Scotland the Brave” is enough to give you goosebumps. The Burns Supper also features, at its heart, that most controversial and misunderstood food: the haggis. Or, as it’s known in Scotland, the haggis. Many Americans still refuse to sample this fine food, which is such a shame, because, trust us, it is no longer made up of all sorts of offal (deliberate usage) things wrapped in a sheep’s stomach – it’s simply choice meat mixed with oatmeal and spices. In other words, delicious. Now don’t be a wuss and try some. For those who simply won’t, there will be fish ‘n’ chips. Tickets for the event are STILL $30 (just as they were at the inaugural event, in 2005). Trust us, you need to reserve them in advance because tickets will almost certainly not be available at the door. To buy them, you can either call us at (609) 770-8479 or buy them from our website at www.exitzero.us. You can also mail us a check (see our address on the inside back page) or stop by the office. Finally, a Happy New Year to all of our darling readers and advertisers... we couldn’t do it without you!

The Undertow
Terry O’Brien is back for an end-of-year special, full of wit, wisdom, and words in general
F
OR those of you who have been wondering “where in the hell is that fantastically intelligent, rakishly handsome Undertow guy?” Well, wonder no longer! I’ve returned to Exit Zero for a one-off, end-of-year special just to update you on my year. In July of 2009 I began a creative writing project for Jack Morey, half of the Morey brothers (Will being the other) who own and operate the fabulous Morey’s Piers in Wildwood (Exit 4). Long story short, that gig morphed into my being tapped as the first manager of Ghost Ship, a new haunted attraction on Mariner’s Landing in the ’Wood. And since I then became a guy who lived in Erma and worked in Wildwood, well, there was no real way to keep Undertow going. But I thought I’d pop in and annoy you one last time. Ghost Ship had a great year, and I’m now almost as famous in Wildwood as I am in Cape May. Ghost Ship sailed above expectations and along the way I got to go on a couple of nifty private plane rides (piloted by one Will) and spent an amazing week in Europe. How amaz-
ing? So amazing that the fact that I spent the final night in an English pub in Zurich, Switzerland having beers with former Flyers coach Mike Keenan was really not all that surprising. We hit Amsterdam, Netherlands; Strasbourg, France; and Cologne, Germany, all en route to the unbelievably cool Europa Park in Rust, Germany, which is very similar to Cape May, if Cape May had a Disney Land next to it. Celebrities Met in the Summer: T. I. (I’m told he’s a rapper) and Ice Cube (I’m told he was once a rapper) while in the CBS 3 studios in Philly for a morning chat show with Ukee Washington. They were, quite obviously,
thrilled to meet such a huge celebrity. For 2011 we’re adding a bunch of new stuff to Ghost Ship AND staying open until Halloween! Yeah, I’m nervous. But what the hell, right? And my book (Murder-Oke & Other Spooky Cape May Tales) really found its niche up on the boardwalk, moving around 120 copies from July 4 through Labor Day. Ten more years like that and the first run will be sold out! But I DID do some Cape May stuff this year. On October 17 Acoustic Mayhem (me and Will Knapp… DING!) played a cool Beatles Brunch fundraiser at Cape May Stage. And boy did they raise some funds. MC Roy Steinberg started by auctioning off a walk-on part next summer. He began the bidding at $1,000. I thought, “Is this guy nuts?” Two minutes later the part sold for $2,500. Not so nuts. Several other items followed, all going for stupefying amounts, and as a guy who hasn’t been as involved in the Cape May Stage as I should be, I now understand the generosity I’m always hearing and reading about (on approxi-

mately 84 pages in Exit Zero every week). It was truly astounding. We also offered karaoke for those willing to pony up $20 a song and embarrass themselves in front of their friends. And after an hour-and-a-half of mimosas, there were plenty of those people. I’ll leave out names to protect the innocent (and regretful). Hmm, $20 a song… I might have to steal that idea. And to further prove that Acoustic Mayhem is a thing that still exists, you can catch us Saturday, February 5 at the Dog Tooth Grill in Wildwood. We will be joined by several guest stars, among them Terry Dougherty (The Herb Moore Trio) on standup bass, Mike O’Brien (of the late, lamented O’Brien Bros. Band) on guitar, and Ric Rutherford (Cape May Diamonds, owner Rio Station) on whatever is lying around. Will Knapp is owed congratulations on several levels; for his new gig with Atlantic Broadcasting (where, thanks to his insider, he was able to land a sweet deal with Morey’s Piers) and for having the good sense to put a bun in Holly’s oven (too much?). I suppose Holly deserves some congratulations for this, too. Victor and Alicia Grasso are also expecting. I mention this mainly because Alicia makes a fantastic-looking pregnant lady, and because I’d hate for an issue of Exit Zero to pass without mention of Victor Grasso. Will and I also hung out with Ye Olde Parker Smith (public defender, private dancer) and EZ centerfold Dan Mathers at Good Night Irene’s to watch the Eagles SHELLACK the Redskins on November 15. Before I was halfway through my first beer it was 21-0. And I drink FAST. Will deserves props for sporting his vintage John Riggins jersey and cheering every time Washington made a play (like, six times). Scary O’ke rocked it at Martini Beach on October 30 for their annual Halloween bash. I was
surprised that, since it directly followed the GABLES shindig, that there were only five Lady Gagas. I went as Joaquin Phoenix, meaning I just didn’t shave for about two months. I thought it was a pretty original idea… until Martini Beach manager Anthony Barra showed up wearing a BETTER version. Jerk. For those that didn’t “get” the Joaquin Phoenix thing, I just told them I was “Fat Victor Grasso”. Terry O’ke has made a spirited comeback, starting at Atkinson’s (kudos to Her Majesty Sue Delanzo-Atkinson for retaining her title of Mayor) where I’ll be Tuesdays, 9-12, through March ($3 cheesesteaks, $2 drafts). December found me back at Cabanas, Thursdays, 8-11. We started a little slow (as is wont to happen at a beachfront bar in December) but perked up Christmas week. It’s great to be back working in Cape May. Thanks to Chris Nagle (whom I HATED when he left me on Ghost Ship, but whom I LOVE now) and George Kelly (the first Irish bar man to serve me a Mexican beer) for making it happen. And starting New Year’s Eve (THIS FRIDAY!), I’ll be reclaiming my regular Friday night post at Rio Station, 9-12, after a brief absence. I would be remiss if I did not mention those who O’ke-ed in my absence this past season: Mark Reeder (Congress Hall) and Jimmy J (Atlas, Ugly Mug, Chelsea Hotel) did yeoman’s work in helping me keep the brand alive while I toiled away on the pier. Lastly, Undertow said goodbye to two friends this year. Former co-worker and constant friend Nancy Beck passed away in October. Words fail, but those that knew her can speak volumes. And Henry’s on the Beach, which employed both myself and my wife over the last 13 years, shuttered its windows last month. While it hardly compares to the loss of a friend, it was just as big a part of my life. ’Til next time, don’t get caught in The Undertow.

Customer Service
Y
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
ESTERDAY, I waited on a friendly couple. Over the course of the night, I brought them their bread, appetizers, wine, entrées, coffee, and dessert. Then I walked up to their table and said, “Welcome. My name is Molly. I’ll be taking care of you tonight.” “You’ve been taking care of us,” the gentleman said, puzzled, “for the last two and a half hours.” I had completely zoned out. A girl waits on enough people, I’ve learned, and she can’t help but zone out. She becomes more like a robot than a server. I may seem focused as I rattle off the ingredients in the fish special (sweet potatoes, coconut, mangoes) or field questions about the bronzino (mild, white, deboned), but the truth is, I’m actually thinking about my to-do list or reciting the lyrics to Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” in my head. I’ve given the same responses so many times, they’ve been burned into my brain... “It’s delicious? I’m so glad you’re enjoying it.” “You’re dissatisfied? I’m sorry.”
“You’re a vegan who’s allergic to garlic, nuts, gluten, and air? I’m sure the chef would be happy to accommodate you.” The problem with this routine is that I often stop listening to what the customers are actually saying and, as I’m just about done listing all 50 states in my head, I pull out the wrong stock phrase. “You’re dissatisfied? I’m so glad you’re enjoying. I mean, I’m sure the chef would be happy to accommodate you. I mean, um, I’m sorry?” I may end the night feeling like a broken record, but I’m sure my customers do, too. I’ve heard the same jokes so many times, I can no longer fake a laugh. I try my best, but
my giggle now comes out more like a grunt. “I’ll have the halibut,” says the guest at table five, pausing for dramatic effect, “just for the hal-of-it.” When I clear the plate of this guest, if he’s a serial jokester, he’ll ask if I can wrap up the leftovers, even though he’s slopped up every last sugar snap pea. When I ask if I can bring a refill, he’ll say, “Somebody keeps polishing off my vodka!” Then, when I bring the bill, he’ll say something to the effect of, “I hope you accept Monopoly money.” My response to this last one is always the same: there are plenty of dishes to be done. My guest and I throw our heads back and chuckle as though this is the first time we’ve taken part in this verbal dance of hilarity. There’s one at every table. I used to think people went out to eat for something different, but all this repetition got me thinking – maybe there’s something to be said for the comfort of routine. Maybe my job isn’t just about bringing food to the table, but a little consistency. So the next time you come out, look for me. My name is Molly. And I’ll be taking care of you.

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
REMEMBER the day I invented Champagne like it was yesterday. My old chum Dom Perignon was visiting Cape May and had brought his customary 500 bottles of wine with him. It was while opening a new bottle that we realized an accident of fermentation had let to a certain fizz, as the cork f lew out, knocked Dom’s feathered hat clean off his head and brought down a passing eagle. We continued to pour the fizzing liquid, as it’s a crime to let good alcohol go untasted, and found the results to be interesting. Only then, in the silence as we considered the merits of the new discovery did we hear, from all around in the crated bottles of wine, a faint hiss and creak, as of colossal pressure on the corks. We looked at each other for a horrified moment, Dom and I, and then both dove for cover, as bottles began exploding all around. I have not been in the midst of such violence and chaos since then, save of course during the Tet Offensive and once at a bachelor party in Atlantic City. How neither of us lost a limb or eye is a miracle,

Y S T I T C H
and we lay there for some minutes after, covered in shards of glass, little pieces of cork and in the center of a sizable pool of bubbling wine. It helped, of course, that the first taste (following on as it did from a few bottles consumed by each of us) had made us tipsy, and rather than being defeated, we saw the positive side of the incident, and set to replicating those conditions, as it was clear to me even then, that a light, effervescent, bubbling wine would appeal greatly

to gents of high station, society ladies, and homosexualizers, who are always in the vanguard of all that is trendy. In the end, we thought the tipple best be named after Dom, as a bottle bearing the moniker “Jackson D’Catur” was too rugged to be quite right, and I am saving it for the day I perfect my 10,000 per cent proof whisky, an ongoing experiment only slightly less dangerous than playing Russian Roulette with a f lamethrower. These days I limit myself to a bottle a week, but do bathe in vintage Champagne once a month: I find that sitting there in the golden nectar, inhaling the bubbles, induces a dreamlike state that brings visions and premonitions of high quality, with little of a hangover the next day. Also, my eczema benefits hugely, for some reason. Once done, I have my faithful manservant Kitchener bottle the bath Champagne – I detest waste – and hand it out as New Year’s gifts to you, my dear dear friends. So, with no more ado, I say “Bottoms Up!” to you all!

Thank you!!! On Thursday morning, December 23, a fire broke out on the second floor of The Merion Inn, injuring Erik Watson and causing damage to the second and third floors. The restaurant, kitchen and bar located on the first floor were untouched other than the ceiling in one of the dining rooms, which sustained minor water damage. Erik was evacuated through a second floor window by the Cape May Fire Department and airlifted to the Temple Burn Center in Philadelphia where he is in critical but stable condition, and is expected to recover fully. The damage to the building is being repaired and we are planning to reopen the restaurant Tuesday evening, December 28. ALL THREE INHABITANTS AND THEIR FIVE PETS WERE RESCUED AND THE HISTORIC PROPERTY WAS SAVED THANKS TO GOD’S GRACE AND THE IMMEDIATE RESPONSE AND AMAZING TEAM EFFORT OF THE CAPE MAY FIRE DEPARTMENT, CAPE MAY VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT, CAPE MAY FIRE POLICE, CAPE MAY POLICE D EPARTMENT AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS OF WEST CAPE MAY, CAPE MAY POINT, TOWN BANK, THE VILLAS, ERMA AND THE U. S. COAST GUARD. Patterson Electric, Valdo’s Cooling and Heating, local contractors, officials from the City of Cape May and Cape May County Health Department, Atlantic City Electric, Greg Coffee and Norm LeBounty of National Associates, and our fabulous Merion Inn staff, family and friends pitched in over the holiday weekend to ensure that the restaurant will reopen safely and swiftly. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts, and are so grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support from our customers and community. We are very sorry to have disappointed those diners who were planning to join us for Christmas Eve or Christmas. We hope that you were able to make other arrangements and that we will see you in the future. If you purchased dinner tickets, we will refund your money, or you may use your ticket as a gift certificate in the future. If we have your address, we will be sending you a Christmas CD and notecards, no matter which option you choose.

The Answer Lady
T
Wise answers to perplexing questions
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady Every year I make New Year’s resolutions and every year I break them by March 1. What am I doing wrong? – Good Intentions Dear Good It was Einstein who opined that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Clearly you need to stop making these resolutions, although The Answer Lady can relate. Every year she resolves to stay the heck out of The Original Fudge Kitchen, but let’s just say it doesn’t always work out that way. Perhaps our biggest mistake is actually making these New Year’s resolutions – it’s simply too much pressure. Certainly, the start of a brand-new year is an excellent time to reassess and re-evaluate the course of
our lives, but in the end it’s just a bunch of not-necessarily-realistic demands we make upon ourselves that may or may not be possible to fulfill. Plus, the very word “resolutions” has a very stern and unyielding quality, does it not? The Answer Lady prefers “goals.” She suggests writing down one or two things you might like to accomplish in the coming year, one realistic, one a little more demanding. Then just start taking small actions to work towards it. For instance, the Answer Lady walks clear on
the OTHER SIDE of the mall when passing The Original Fudge Kitchen. Usually. Good luck! Dear Answer Lady I go to a friend’s New Year’s Eve party every year and last year I had a little too much fun. I won’t get into the gory details here, but suffice to say some friends weren’t speaking to me for a while afterwards. How do I make sure this doesn’t happen again this year? – Party Animal Dear Party Hmm, The Answer Lady will venture a guess that a little too much bubbly is involved. There are all sorts of things one can do to keep the vino from going straight to one’s head – or other regions. Pace yourself, have a glass of water between alcoholic beverages, and don’t forget to eat! Bring a tray from Seaside Cheese to the party – this will soak up some of that bubbly. Easier said than done, but stop when you’ve had enough. And remember – never drink and drive. Sleep on your friend’s couch (if your friend is agreeable), or call Aart’s Taxi. Be safe, and have a happy, healthy new year.

Activity Of The Week
T
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Winter wonderland.
O BE happy in Cape May in winter, you need to like yourself and the people who share your life. The quiet is intense and there is no noisy crowd to distract you from each other. But, if you know the difference between “alone” and “lonely,” Cape May is your place. First, there is the beach. “To the sound of crushing waves, to the call of ebbing memories, I walk on the winter beach,” writes poet Suchoon Mo. He’s right – nothing clears the static from your overindulged holiday brain like a brisk walk along the Cove. Marvel at the miracle of snow on sand. Tilt your face to the bright midday sun. Walk all the way to the lighthouse. Or not. Don’t even try to keep the wind at your back – just let it take your breath away. Next, there is the community. Visit Fiber Arts and learn to crochet an Afghan. As you work, you can snuggle under the blanket you’re creating. Now your lap is warm, now your knees, and now there is room for cuddling under the growing rectangle of wool. You’re not goofing off, you’re creating
– and you’re very cozy. Take an art class at the library – learn to stencil or draw portraits of your loved ones. Borrow some jazz CDs while you are there, so you’ll enjoy the next jazz festival that much more. Talk to people. Linger at a restaurant, and overtip. Visit an art gallery without feeling the need to make even one intelligent comment. Then, there is the freedom. Park almost
anywhere! Ride your bike around town safely. Fly your kite without stomping on sunbathers. Get out your metal detector and search the beach for the treasures that only winter storms can kick up. Jog even though you are totally out of shape. Goof around with your dog. No one is watching! Finally, there is the lack of pressure. In January, no one – not even the little voice in your head that sounds a lot like your mother – will say, “How can you stay inside on such a beautiful day?” So linger with a loved one – there’s a good reason most babies are born in August and September! Read long books that have no recognized literary merit. Sip leftover Christmas wine. Write a real letter to someone who sent you a Christmas card. Try to cook like the chef at your favorite restaurant. Watch a Twilight Zone marathon. Clean out a closet. Nap. Cape May in winter is still Cape May. The sunset is still spectacular. The fudge is still tasty. You can still play skeeball. And you can enjoy it all, all on your own. Happy New Year!

The Dating Column
Stella Dixon’s take on romance at the shore – where the odds are good, but the goods are odd.
W
HEN I was little, my aunt bought me a porcelain doll for every occasion. They spooked me out. From the corner of my room, they’d stare at me with their creepy, glass eyes until I finally had to give them away. I told my aunt that I loved the dolls – because that was the polite thing to do. No harm in a little white lie, I thought. When I was in college, I told my boyfriend, John, that I loved watching him play basketball. I’d sit through his painfully long games in an unbearably hot gym while the drunk, shirtless guy beside me spilled cheesy fries on my purse. True love is worth the cost of a dry-cleaning bill, I told myself. And John did the same for me. When I gained a few pounds or let a roommate of mine chop up my hair, he told me I looked beautiful. No harm in some little white lying, we figured. I understand sparing the feelings of those we care about, especially in a romantic relationship. But the problem with little white lies is that they don’t stay little for long. One day, he’s telling you how pretty you look,
even though you don’t. The next day, you catch him in the next room over, telling your roommate how pretty SHE is. When I found out how unfaithful John had been, I called it quits. My friends were relieved. They told me how much they’d distrusted John from the very beginning. “This would have been good to know,” I told them, “two years ago.” But honesty between friends, at least when it comes to the men we date, is a tricky
business. Tell a girl how you really feel about her fella, and you risk doing serious damage to the friendship. Plus, there’s always the chance that your gut feeling is wrong, that the man in question could turn out to be a white knight instead of a white liar. Then, at your friend’s wedding, you’ll find yourself stuck at the same table as Uncle “pull my finger” Herman or the seventeen-year-old second cousin with the wandering hands. I’ve consoled heartbroken friends by telling them what they expect to hear, that the scoundrels they love so much might one day magically transform into the kind, respectful men they deserve. It’s become our MO as women. But maybe it’s time to put all the little white lying to rest. Because, when it comes down to it, if your friends won’t be honest, who will? Perhaps it’s worth the risk of spending a wedding or two with Uncle Herman. After all, without the truth, you can give away all the porcelain dolls you want, but there’s still going to be a great big pink elephant staring at you from the corner of the room.

The Movie Column
I
Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Black Swan”
’VE often been the voice of dissension in this column. It would seem that audiences (for the most part) loved Inception with Leonardo DiCarprio – I didn’t. Then I saw what Hollywood had to offer this holiday season, and I wasn’t impressed. Little Fockers – did that trilogy barely cross the finish line! You really going to try and sell me on Yogi Bear? When I saw previews for Black Swan, I thought... hmmm. The movie stars Natalie Portman as a ballerina dancer who is trying to climb to the top. As she gets her big break, demons from within try to pull her apart. Portman is fantastic as Nina Sayers, the fragile, tormented lead. It’s like she was born to play this part, which might be why she is nominated for a Golden Globe and the buzz is on about an Oscar nod as well. Also nominated for a Golden Globe is supporting actress Mila Kunis, who plays a more rebellious dancer in the ensemble. Mila has had an interesting career. Still best known for her role as Jackie in That 70s Show, she has been gaining in prominence over the past few years. The Golden Globe is her first
“Black Swan” has been receiving major Oscar buzz, but our reviewer is not a fan.
major nomination. This film relies heavily on realism vs. fantasy or dream state. So much that by the end I was left confused… but not a good confused, not a confused that makes you say, “Wow, how cool was that?” but one that says, “What just happened, and do I care?”
And now I suppose we have to be clobbered over the head with images of sexuality express metaphor. It would seem that Darren Aronofsky, the same director who brought us Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler, would rather spoon feed emotions to his audience than allow us to take them in ourselves. But once again it would seem that I’m somewhat alone in voicing dissent for a film that is winning critical acclaim (with numerous Golden Globe award nominations) and fantastic scores on several internet film review sites. And locally we’ve got a reader of this very column who (agreeably) disagrees with me. Denise G. from North Wildwood writes: “Black Swan was terrific. The film nailed Nina’s psychological and emotional problems manifested in her perfectionism and self-harming behaviors. Dark and disturbing, it was a thriller in a setting not usual to the genre.” Want to disagree with me? Please do! Send comments to capemayfilm@hotmail. com! Thanks to Denise for letting her voice be heard (and in this case it is the voice of the majority!).

ROMEO, who came in with Sheba, is a timid seven-year-old boy who will warm up to you once he meets you and then he becomes very affectionate. Like Sheba, Romeo lived with 7 kids so he does well with them and doesn’t have any possessive issues. All he needs now is a quiet home due to his uneasiness. If you can offer Romeo a calm home stop by the shelter or give us a call for information. Adoption fee is $35.
«
TARA is another one of our pets that was found on the streets and brought to our shelter by someone with a good heart. She is affectionate and social but does also need to learn some manners as she can be jumpy. She enjoys her toys and rawhides but can be protective of them so we suggest a home with children over the age of 13. Overall she is a good gal who just needs some training and guidance. Adoption fee is $95.
«
KALIB, a three-year-old shepherd mix, came to our shelter after his owner passed away. He’s been very fearful and has not been socialized. He does seek comfort and security from people he is familiar with but a couple of times he hid under the desk when he was not familiar with someone. He wants so much to please everyone, but he is just going to need a quiet, adult home. Adoption fee is $95.

LAZARUS has had a difficult life. He was an inside cat who we believe was dumped. After being let loose he found his way to a cat colony where he was beaten up regularly by other cats. On top of that he is allergic to cat food – wet and dry – that has fowl ingredients. This friendly guy must go to a home where he will receive special care.

PAM was found abandoned in a yard with Pumkin and Puddin. She is a nice cat who does well with cats and dogs but would do best in a home without small kids as she is a little timid. All she needs now is a second chance to have a good life. If you can offer Pam the comfort of a home please come rescue her today.

EVELYN and sister Erika are sevenyear old gals who have been at the shelter since August. They’re sweet cats who like to be petted and picked up which leads us to believe they may have been dumped. Since they are now familiar with being both in and out they would do well as inside/outside cats. They mix well with other animals.

Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
F YOU live in Cape May you are fortunate indeed. You live within a short drive of a bird that non-coastal residents must make a pilgrimage to see. I’m speaking of Brant, a small, stockynecked marine goose. They nest in the high arctic. They winter along the Atlantic (and Pacific) coasts. Inland? They are rare to nonexistent. In fact, over the course of 52 birding years I have only twice seen Brant away from the coast. One was on a Christmas Bird Count in Morris County, New Jersey. A single bird slumming it with Canada Geese on a body of water known as Bee Meadow Pond. The other encounter was a flock that passed over my head while I was birding in Stokes State Forest on the Memorial Day Weekend. The birds were migrating. Heading north. I know most birds have stopped migrating by late May, but there’s no reason for Brant to leave much earlier because their Arctic breeding grounds are covered by snow into June. In fact, sometimes their breeding
grounds are covered by snow into July. The birds respond to this by not bothering to breed at all. Must be frustrating. Brant are a favorite of mine. They are animate, amiable, and handsome. One of the first paintings I ever purchased featured a Brant. Painted by a local artist/ carver named Jim Seibert. I still have that
work of a bird crouched in snow commemorating the winter of 1977 when marshes (even Delaware Bay) froze and Brant died in droves. I was part of the salvage team. So were Jim and Joan Seibert. Also in my home are several brant decoys. They, and Black Duck decoys, are about all I collect; all I’m interested in. Both birds are Jersey-centric and, as mentioned, wholly or mostly coastal. Anybody, almost any place in North America can collect pintail decoys or mallard decoys. Black Ducks and Brant are special. Semi-indigenous. As much a matter of local art as regional pride. The name Brant comes from the old English word brennan, which means “to burn.” The mostly soot-black birds (with white sides) do look like they were worked over with a darkening flame. The scientific name, Branta bernicla, is somewhat fanciful. This marine goose’s penchant for hugging coastlines, combined with its distant and isolated breeding range, gave rise to speculation that the birds hatched from ber-

APE May Stage closes its season with a double header on December 30 – there will be a matinee at 3pm and the farewell performance of The Little Prince at 8pm. This beloved children’s classic has been re-imagined in a stunning production by Scott Hitz. It has been a triumph for the theatre, continuing the tradition of bringing the very best theatre to Cape May before these productions move elsewhere. After the December 30 production, crews will pack up the set and puppets to bring them to Bristol Riverside Theatre and then on to New York. That is why you voted Cape May Stage “Best Theater in Cape May County 2010”. We intend to continue that tradition in 2011 by bringing back favorite productions like Say Goodnight Gracie while adding what are bound to be new favorites like Steel Magnolias and more world premieres. Subscriptions are still available by calling (609) 884-1341 or going online to capemaystage.com. We so appreciate the tremendous support the community bestows upon Cape May Stage. This past season helped establish us as a serious theatre of stature. Grantors have taken notice and individuals have stepped up with annual giving so that we can continue the momentum of making Cape May Stage a destination all its own. We thank you for joining the party and look forward to celebrating again with you next year. As our reputation grows, so does all of Cape May. We think next season will be the best ever. Happy New Years. See you in May.
Above: Celebrate the wonder of the holiday season with the hit production, “The Little Prince.” There are added performances tonight, December 29 at 8pm, and a matinee on December 30 at 3pm. Right: Next holiday season, patrons will enjoy “This Wonderful Life” – the classic Christmas show adapted from the famous film “It’s a Wonderful Life.” It is just one of many plays that are sure to make a memorable season, so subscribe today and don’t miss a moment!

Bird Droppings ? From Page 87 nekka or barnacle. Be assured they do not. They do not even feed on barnacle or shellfish. The birds are vegetarians, feeding primarily upon sea lettuce or eel grass. Dry gray, of a sort you (and they) might find on lawns, is also consumed. Several years ago I was fortunate enough to be up on Baffin Island in June. On a wind swept bluff, overlooking a still frozen ocean, I noted a flock of a dozen or so Brant. They, and all the other waterfowl, were still waiting for the lock to be picked on winter. While they waited they fed on the withered grass exposed by the wind. Very arguably the best thing about Brant is the bird’s call. You’re familiar with the sound of Canada Geese (I’ll bet). Well diminish the decibels, soften the syntax, compress the syllables, and mix in a tempering measure of purr and you’ve got a Brant. Quick sum. The call of brant sounds like a cross between a honk and a purr. If you have a computer (maybe Santa was extremely nice and you got one of those new iPad thingamijiggies), you can go to Cornell Lab’s website (www.allaboutbirds.
Wednesday, December 29, 2010 org/guide/Brant/sounds) and hear it for yourself. There is something about it that is viscerally pleasing. Something that strums the soul. It is wild and soothing and it makes you want to laugh a little, too. So if you are in need of soothing (or a laugh) take advantage of your Cape May pejorative and go out and enjoy an afternoon with Brant. You’ll find them in the back bay or foraging on the marsh. Listen for the sound of a honk that purrs and look for a white-sided goose the color of burnt cork. Barring that, look for the guy watching the birds through a spotting scope. That will be me. Just ask, I’ll be glad to show them to you. With Goose Tidings for a wonderful new year, Seymore and his whole flock of birding associates wish everyone at Exit Zero, and all their readers, a happy new year. Even though Exit Zero will, as usual, be on hiatus until February, you can get your nature fix by stopping by the Cape May Bird Observatory. CMBO’s Northwood Center, at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point, is THE information spot for anything to do with nature. The center is open 9:30am to 4:30pm, except Tuesdays, through February. Ask any of our staff – they are always glad to help with
anything you need, even things you didn’t know you needed yet. Check out the schedule of daily walks, pick up a free birding map and checklist and while you are there, don’t forget the newest books (including Pete Dunne’s newest, Bayshore Summer, and Birds of Cape May, a beautiful array of photos just released by Kevin Karlson), and more. Pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, binoculars and spotting scopes. Have a nature enthusiast on your gift list but are clueless what they want or need? Pick up a gift card, redeemable at any of our New Jersey Audubon Centers throughout the state. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit us online www.BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
