The Police Blotter
PUNXSUTAWNEY, PA: On Thursday, March 25 at 3pm, locals reported a visibly intoxicated man kneeling by the side of Route 36. The police found him attempting mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on a roadkilled possum. – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves. – Albert Einstein I kissed my first girl and smoked my first cigarette on the same day. I haven’t had time for tobacco since. – Arturo Toscanini If you are ever in doubt as to whether to kiss a pretty girl, always give her the benefit of the doubt. – Thomas Carlyle People who throw kisses are mighty hopelessly lazy. – Bob Hope It takes a lot of experience for a girl to kiss like a beginner. – Ladies Home Journal, 1948 There are two things that are more difficult than making an after-dinner speech: climbing a wall which is leaning toward you and kissing a girl who is leaning away from you. – Winston Churchill
Weird Word Of The Week
Kissing-crust Happily, this is a noun, not a verb. It describes the soft part on the crust of a loaf of bread where it has touched another loaf while baking.
National Archives
DURING the early colonial period there were no European settlers in the midAtlantic region with the exception of the few surviving Jamestown colonists. The land was mostly inhabited by Native Americans of the Lenni Lenape tribe. A subdivision of the Lenni Lenape, the Kechemeche lived in southern New Jersey, which they called ‘Scheyichbi,’ or ‘Land along the water.’ The Kechemeche were a peaceful tribe who spent much of their lives hunting and farming the land. – Ben Miller
Facebook Mystery Contest
KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know who this patio belongs to, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-yearold nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!
Random Fact Of The Week
SURE, a kiss might take your breath away, but did you ever think it might come from exertion? According to Lana Citron’s A Compendium of Kisses, every time you pucker up you’re flexing 146 muscles. Remember: when you next lock lips, you’ll get a workout too.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J There is absolutely no substitute for a genuine lack of preparation. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with an order of medium spicy chicken pad thai. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editor
W
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
E’RE back! And we know you missed us because there was a steady trail of people coming into Exit Zero Global HQ every Wednesday to request the latest issue. Which just goes to show that some people really don’t pay attention – we’ve been doing this winter hiatus thing ever since 2006, although it’s hard to call it a hiatus when the first six weeks of the year form the busiest, most intense period of the year for us. This is when we work on our Cool Cape May book, and a whole bunch of projects we do for other companies. Anyway... Every year, we like to come back with fresh ideas – that way, the relationship between you and EZ never gets stale. It’s our mission to make you fall in love with us all over again, each and every February. And so we have some fun new items in the issue. There is the return of three old favorites – the Random Gift Certificate Giveaway, What They’re Wearing, our great shopping column, Must Haves – plus the introduction of Employee of the Week. And we’re not done... more new columns and features will be added in the coming months. WANT to know the perfect definition of a self-fulfilling prophecy? It happenered here in Cape May last month. And it concerned Cape May’s designation as a National Historic Landmark city. Almost every time something happens in this city that I would call progress, we hear from the same old folks who just love to oppose things – we used to call them obstructionists in these pages. These folks make the same noises about Cape May being in danger of losing its prized status as a National Historic Landmark (which it was awarded in 1976) every time the
city moves ahead with... (insert name of project). The plans for a new convention hall was the most recent example. Some people wanted the building to look more like the original, though any sensible person who knows anything about preservation will tell you that there aren’t many more jarring things in a historic town than a new building pretending to be historic. The National Parks Service, who police the historic landmark designations, would not have been impressed by the erection of a fauxVictorian structure. However, it seems that enough people caused a fuss in the last few months that the National Parks Service has seen fit to place Cape May on their watch list, which is designed to act as a warning shot to towns that they better be careful. Cape May’s mayor, Ed Mahaney, contacted the NPS to ask them exactly why they had taken such a course of action but so far hasn’t heard back. The NPS website says that, “Recent development and rehabilitation efforts in the historic district are potentially detrimental to the landmark’s historic character. Concerns from local and federal preservation interests necessitate a change in status.”
This is an official way of saying that the organization is reacting to whistle blowers in this town, who are causing trouble because, in my view, they don’t like it when they believe their voices aren’t being heard. It’s a pretty crappy way to conduct yourself – if you really care about Cape May’s status as a National Historic Landmark, why would you go telling tales to the very group that could take that staus away from the city? You could argue that it’s a warning shot to which Cape May should respond before it’s too late, but I happen to believe that the people who run city hall are proud and protective of the city’s status. Yes, there have been mistakes – the erection of vinyl fencing on the promenade was a terrible decision, but it replaced metal plumber’s pipe, which doesn’t sound very historic to me either, so I don’t see how THAT would be an issue. The folks in the NPS shouldn’t just be listening to the views of a small group of blowhards – it would be smarter for them to make a decision based on some real information gathering. WE HAD a blast, as usual, at the Exit Zero Burns Supper at the end of January, at the Ugly Mug. (I can’t believe it was our seventh annual event.) It’s always a great pleasure to reconnect with Pipe Major Kevin Tolan and the men of the Irish Pipe Brigade, and people like Clyde and Pat Saign, who travel for at least two and a half hours every year to come to this event, no matter the weather (and there’s usually snow on the ground when we have the Burns Supper). It is a little strange that I only get to see these people one night of the year. Strange, but also quite a sweet little tradition. I should also thank Clyde and Pat for the lovely ‘Got Haggis’ T-shirt – it finished off my outfit quite perfectly. It’s nice to be back. Until next week...

alentine’s ay Enjoy our
Valentine’s Day Specials Saturday, February 12 through Monday, February 14 Name: Hank “The Tank” Moller. Workplace: The OriginalFudge Kitchen. Age: Thirty-one. Hometown: North Cape May. How long have you worked there? Twelve years. Best thing about the job? The family atmosphere, for sure. Also, the constant variety of the customers who come in here. And the fact that it’s year-round is great, too. What do you recommend there? I like the Jordan Cracker. It’s a small wafer dipped in either milk or dark chocolate. It’s kind of similar to a Kit Kat Bar. [Reporter’s note: For the sake of authenticity, we felt compelled to sample the dark chocolate Jordan Cracker. Hank is clearly a very, very wise man.] What would be your other dream job? Maybe I have the Super Bowl on the brain, but something in sports. I guess a football player – a linebacker. Favorite thing about Cape May? That would definitely be the night and day difference between summer and winter. I like how busy the season is, and then how totally quiet and relaxing the off-season is – the winter gives you something to look forward to after the craziness of the summer. EVERY week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first of all, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our theme issue, which this week is all about kissing. Our first winner of the year is Lily Mullock, 17, from West Cape May. We found Lily behind the counter of Whale’s Tale (where she happens to work). Here are her answers to our piercing questions: What was the name of the person you first kissed? Dylan Rutherford. Who is the most kissable person in the world? Orlando Bloom. On a scale of 1 to 10, how good a kisser are you? 10.5. Lily wins a $50 gift certificate to Artizan Salon and Spa. Congratulations, and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY DANIELLE O’NEAL

Customer Service
I
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
N THE winter, when shifts at my Cape May restaurant are few and far between, I have plenty of time to experience dinner from the other side of the table – as a guest. But working in the industry makes dining out difficult. Like a lifeguard who can’t help but scan the ocean for swimmers in trouble, even on her day off, I can’t help but scan a restaurant dining room, painfully aware of details my fellow diners might never otherwise notice. Recently, I went to Atlantic City for a long overdue dinner with an old friend. She was excited to fill me in on her new promotion, but I was too distracted to listen. “I can’t believe how many tables these servers are covering,” I said. “That’s great, Molly,” she told me, “now back to my job…” I pretended to listen but, discreetly, I was noticing where the glassware was kept and the distance from the kitchen to the server’s station. This habit of mine is especially problematic when out with a gentleman. It
doesn’t matter if my date is a professional underwear model who rescues abandoned puppies in his spare time (a girl can dream), all that I’ll be able to focus on is whether or not my silverware has been polished. And when things go terribly wrong, I won’t ever let anyone at my table voice a complaint. Our waiter spilled clam chowder down the back of your shirt, brought the wrong order, and overcharged for your wine? Suck it up! While you’re in the bathroom rinsing clam juice from your collar, I’ll be leaving a 40% tip and filling out a comment card describing what an enjoyable time we’ve had. Servers everywhere – from Denny’s
to the French Laundry, from Cape May to California – dine by this unspoken code. We look out for one another. It’s the reason I can tell immediately if the people I’m waiting on have ever been in the business. An off-duty server who’s not ready to order won’t keep me waiting by her table while she debates the pros and cons of ravioli. She knows better. She won’t order a welldone steak or a dish that isn’t on the menu, because she knows how much it annoys the kitchen. And if her date is at all rude or snappy to the server, she won’t hesitate to put him in his place. Recently, my friend Daniel, a diehard firefighter, described for me what a brotherhood there is among rescue workers. I know this is true. And I’ve known groups of schoolteachers, doctors, and insurance salesmen equally as close. Still, I’d say that restaurant loyalty rivals that of any other profession. If you don’t believe me, don’t take my word for it. By all means, bring a server with you to dinner and, while you’re there, go ahead – try to send back your steak.

The Old Fogey
B
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ACK in the day, my kissing was legendary. It was I who brought the French kiss back from Paris, after a long gay (in the old-fashioned sense, mostly) summer with Toulouse Lautrec and his decadent circle of atists, writers and implausibly f lexible dancing girls. And of course, I was successful in wooing the Late Mrs D’Catur only because of my kissing prowess. She steadfastly refused my advances for some months, scoffing at my interesting tales of adventure, yawning loudly in company when I told hilarious jokes and once rapping me sharply on the temple with the ivory handle of her parasol when I bent to kiss her ungloved hand. I am not a man to be denied, though, and I knew her outward appearance of disdain, mixed with some mild hatred, was naught but a smokescreen to hide her true feelings. If I know anything about ladies at all, and I think I do, it is that if they truly are disinterested in a man, they will nod politely and turn away: sarcasm, disdain, scorn and irritation are signs of a growing
passion, and a chap should redouble his efforts, while engaging the services of a good lawyer just in case he has misjudged the situation and legal action follows. Anyways, I became the lady’s constant companion, through cunning, guile and great patience. And one fine day in summer, myself, Ernie Hemingway, Amelia Earhart, Dorothy Parker and the soon-tobe Mrs D were all picnicking at The Point. The sun was shining, the birds were singing (though warily, as all animals had a well-
founded wariness of Hemingway) and the champagne was f lowing. I had just tried for the third time to tell a long but fascinating anecdote about the time I took a hot air balloon trip across the Alps, and she had, as usual, waited until the punchline: “And I said ‘but the only ballast we have LEFT is my undergar…’” before she interrupted and said, “Did anyone else hear a train whistle?” and the moment was lost. Usually she did not look me in the eye when sabotaging my bon mots, but this time she glanced up at me through long lashes and there was a definite twinkle, so I pounced like a ravenous tiger, and before she could even protest, locked my lips on hers. Well, I delivered the best kiss I have every planted, let me tell you. A full minute passed and not a sound was made by anyone or anything nearby. Even Ernie stopped shooting at passing boats. When I finally disengaged, the lady’s eyes were filled with tears, and I knew she was mine. Of course, oxygen deprivation meant she needed a short spell in hospital, but who said love was painless?

L’Erbolario At The Italian Garden
Flowers = good. Flowers + necklace = better. This smoky red vase is pictured with a dozen roses, but you can also select pink lilies. The kicker here is the red heart dangling from a dainty silver chain, all for $99.95. Take it from just pretty to pretty, sweet AND cuddly with the addition of candy, a plush friend and a balloon. 860 Broadway, 609-884-1865, www.capewindsflorist.net.
Pick a card – any card! If you’re not up to penning a soul-baring love letter for Valentine’s Day, peruse the cut-above selection at Cape May’s greeting card HQ. Lit Flowers At Good Scents
Diamond Ring At Artisan’s Alcove
A Bottle Of Wine From Hawk Haven
When you think Good Scents, you naturally think amazing candles and incense. But check out these fabulous flowers that light up – you get the Valentine’s Day flower factor AND ambience in one (and knocking them over in a moment of passion won’t burn the house down). Kate says they’re the best-selling item in the store. 327 Carpenter Lane, 609-884-0014, www.sensia.com.
If you’ve decided to put this Valentine’s Day on the map by popping the question, seal the deal with a ring from Artisan’s Alcove. The beauty pictured here is an Art Deco (circa 1920) platinum, hand-engraved filigree stunner with a 1.84 carat diamond. The rings range in price from $450 to $50,000, and they have layaway. 523 Lafayette Street, 609-884-0202, www.artisansalcove.com.
Released in time for Valentine’s Day, two new offerings from Hawk Haven will make your Valentine’s mood mellow. Talon is 50% Syrah, 50% merlot, while Quill is a Bordeaux blend comprised of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet blanc, and merlot. A jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and thou – a perfect Valentine’s Day. 600 South Railroad Avenue, Rio Grande, 609-846-7347, www.hawkhavenvineyard.com.

The Answer Lady
T
HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I just spent yet another holiday season surrounded by well-meaning relatives who relentlessly harassed me about being single. I’m happy with my life, but they don’t seem to get that. How do you politely tell people to mind their own business? – Sincerely Single Dear Sincere This subject is near and dear to the Answer Lady’s heart, as she did not marry until the advanced age of 37, apparently about 15 years past the relatives’ expectations. The Answer Lady even went through a phase where she got so tired of being interrogated that she started going for shock value. Picture this: Well-meaning uncle at family function: “So why haven’t you settled down yet, young lady?” Answering
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Lady (with several beverages in her): “Well, Uncle Phil, I get bored having sex with the same person. Aunt Janet always says variety is the spice of life, right?” The Answer Lady does not recommend this method for the faint of heart. Your life is your own to live as you see fit. So smile, sidestep, smile, change the subject, smile, and when the going gets tough, excuse yourself and find someone else to chat with. Dear Answer Lady A friend emailed to ask about my boy-
friend’s picture in Exit Zero – she wasn’t sure it was him. Well, it was him, alright – at the bar at Hemingway’s, with a bunch of people, including women, that I don’t even know! I immediately dumped him. Why can’t I find a guy I can trust? – Still Single Dear Single Hmm, perhaps because you’re a lunatic? The Answer Lady jests, of course, but seriously, get a hold of yourself. Unless you and your boyfriend had a set of rules banning him from appearing in public without you, then the Answer Lady fails to see the problem – with him. Your letter indicates that trust is an ongoing issue in your relationships, but if you’re holding your boyfriends to an unachievable level of behavior, then ask yourself: what is the common denominator? It is not “untrustworthy men,” although the world certainly has its share of them. It seems to the Answer Lady that the link in this chain of failed relationships is you. If you can’t trust your current boyfriend, that’s him. If you can’t trust ANY of your boyfriends, that’s you.

Y FRIEND Cathy has a two-year-old daughter. When the baby’s father came home with Barbie’s Dream Playset, Cathy was appalled. Like many a feminist mother before her, she left the doll lying around the house until the family dog just happened to tear it to smithereens. “Whoops,” Cathy said, smiling as she tossed the plastic remains of Barbie’s cellulite-free butt into the trash. I wondered if my friend’s reaction might just be a little overboard. Sure, the Barbie doll was originally modeled after a cartoon prostitute. Sure, were Barbie a real person, she’d be over seven feet tall with no room for a liver and a head the same circumference as her waist. But doesn’t Barbie have some redeeming qualities? She’s the only woman I know who’s been a doctor, an astronaut, a UNICEF volunteer and a World Cup soccer player. And besides, if we start giving little girls only trucks and trains to play with, won’t we be sending the message that there’s something inferior with all things “girly”? And if there’s nothing wrong with girls
embracing their inner Barbie dolls, then maybe there’s nothing wrong with boys embracing their inner GI Joes. Maybe girls will be girls and boys will be boys, and what’s so bad about all that? Brian, I think, is a good example of what is so bad about all that. Brian is a man who, I’m sure, played with GI Joe as a kid. This is a man who exudes machismo, a man whose parents never had the good sense to leave the macho-themed toys lying around the house
for a family pet to destroy. I met Brian at a party with my sister. At six-foot-five, Brian’s large frame might have been intimidating, but his camouflaged waders and black facepaint made him laughable. “I’ve been hunting ducks,” he told me. Yes, I wanted to say, but are you still? I quickly realized that this was a setup. My sister was hoping this man shoveling three bags worth of beef jerky into his mouth might end up being the Ken to my Barbie. That night, while everyone sipped on cans of Miller Lite, Brian did shots of Everclear and beat his chest like a caveman. When I got off the couch to refill the chips, Brian did pull-ups. Then, while I watched in horror, Brian played a gruesome video game about chopping up zombies, like a virtual GI Joe game for grown men. What I learned from Brian is this: perhaps our concepts of feminine and masculine shouldn’t fit some cookie cutter ideal, and identity shouldn’t come in a cardboard Mattel box. After all, something so easily contrived is easily destroyed… as easily as a plastic doll in a dog’s mouth.

Activity Of The Week
I
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Winter Poetry and Prose Getaway.
F YOU can’t beat the winter blues, maybe you can turn them into art. Unleash your inner poet with a writing workshop, conveniently located right here in beautiful, blustery Cape May. Peter Murphy, of Murphy Writing Seminars, has been leading the Poetry and Prose Getaway in Cape May for 18 years. The goal is to provide a supportive environment to foster creativity. Judging from the atmosphere at the Grand Hotel over Martin Luther King weekend, that goal was met. The friendly tone of the getaway was set by the welcoming reception on Friday night, which featured hot soup, crusty bread and a singalong of “On the Way to Cape May.” Workshops began in earnest on Saturday, and by lunchtime the hotel was full of scribbling and sharing. By Saturday night, there were no strangers in the group. Outside the classroom, guests gathered for sunrise yoga, beach walks, evening board games and late-night dancing, fueled by a steady supply of fresh fruit, coffee and chocolate. Since Mr Murphy is a native of Wales, it’s only natural that he draws participants from
around the globe. They came from California and Canada, India and Ireland – even the Republic of Georgia – bearing notebooks, laptops and an urge to get creative. They brought a wide variety of life experiences with them. There were soldiers, diplomats, accountants, bartenders and reporters, ranging in age from college kids to senior citizens. All were eager to create. The curriculum was equally diverse. Michelle Cameron, author of the historical
fiction work The Fruit of Her Hands led the beginning novelists. Other prose workshops included memoir, revision and young adult fiction. Nancy Falkow came from Ireland to inspire the songwriters. Then there were the poets – lots and lots of talented poets. Dorianne Laux and Patricia Smith, the featured readers at Sunday night’s “Getaway Cafe,” impressed the audience with humor and pathos. This night of poetry and ice cream included a bookstore, where participants could sell and autograph their published works. On Monday morning, there was time for a short workshop before a moving tribute to Dr King. Then, after an express lunch, the workshop was over and it was time to get back to real life. Armed with practical knowledge and a year’s worth of motivation, the participants scattered. The Poetry and Prose Getaway is over for this year, but there are other chances to produce art. The Cape May County Library offers classes in memoir and photography – create your way to spring! Next week: Party like the Presidents

The Movie Column
I
Guest review of “The King’s Speech,” by Dottie Knapp, board member of the Cape May Film Festival
T ISN’T often that you get to see Mr Darcy, Captain Barbossa, Bellatix Lestrange and Wormtail as well as Adam/Felix (one of my favorite drag queens) all in one movie! But that’s what you get in The King’s Speech, the story of King George IV (the current queen’s father) and his triumph over stuttering. As the Duke of York, Colin Firth may not be as dashing as he was as Mr Darcy in the many hours of Pride and Prejudice (BBCTV), but the stiff upper lip is still there, and you hold your breath as you agonize with him, willing him to form the words as he tries to overcome his impediment. Geoffrey Rush as the therapist is also a little less dashing without the pirate hat he wore in Pirates of the Caribbean, but is so charming that you envy his family. I’m not a fan of Helena Bonham Carter, only because she is so evil as Bellatrix in Harry Potter, and yet here she is matronly, adoring, kind, everything we’ve come to believe the Queen Mother was. The transformation of Wormtail (Timothy Spall, also in Harry Potter) into the character of Winston Churchill is outright amazing.
“The King’s Speech” boasts an all-star cast and refeshingly smart dialogue. Guy Pearce gets to give up the throne for the woman he loves, and as you watch him play the sycophant to a domineering Wallis, you hope that the next movie will be about them (and no, he doesn’t don any ladies clothes a la Priscilla: Queen of the Desert). This is really a buddy movie, even
though it is about royalty. The writer asked the Queen Mother if he could make a movie about the king’s problem and she asked that he not do so until after her death as it was too painful a period. The movie makes you understand this. It’s not what we have come to expect of period drama, so if you want opulent sets and lavish clothing, you aren’t going to get it here. Most of the scenes are in very restricted surroundings, and while the clothing is lovely, we are talking about the House of Windsor here, so it is – tasteful. There are so few movies involving words with more then two syllables that when one comes along featuring dialogue and not car chases, it seems like a whole new genre. Support it. Maybe they’ll make more. And if you’re looking for a Valentine treat, come to the Cape May Film Society’s screening of For Roseanna, starring Mercedes Ruehl and Jean Reno. The film starts at 7:30pm Saturday, February 12 at Cape May Stage, and the evening comes complete with champagne and chocolate. No reservations needed, but you can call (609) 884-6700 for details.

ZOLA is a shy gal who is uneasy when she first meets new people. She will need a firm hand to guide her. She does know basic commands like “sit” and “drop” but will still need more training. She can become jumpy when playing so we recommend a home with children over the age of 14. If you can offer Zola the training she needs, stop in and meet her. She may be the right one for you. Adoption fee is $95.
«
PATCHES is an energetic pup who loves to play but he will need some training and lots of exercise. Due to the fact that he can be jumpy when playing he must go to a home with children who are over ten years old. Otherwise he will make a great friend and companion. All he needs now is someone who is willing to offer him the training and exercise he needs. Come and meet Patches today! Adoption fee is $95.
«
TARA was found on the streets and brought to our shelter by someone with a good heart. She is affectionate and social but does also need to learn some manners. She enjoys her toys but can be protective of them, so we suggest a home with children over the age of 13. Overall she is a good gal who just needs some training and guidance. If you’re able to offer Tara what she needs, please stop by. Adoption fee is $95.

LAZARUS has had a difficult life. He was an inside cat who we believe was dumped. After being let loose he found his way to a cat colony where he was beaten up regularly by other cats. On top of that he is allergic to cat food – wet and dry – that has fowl ingredients. This friendly guy must go to a home where he will receive special care.
«
MIDGET is a calm, older lady who would be a great companion for someone looking to brighten up their day. She’s friendly, does well with other cats and is really sweet. Midget is biding her time until a kind soul comes and takes her into their life. Why don’t you be that kind soul and adopt Midget today? Adoption fee is $8.
«
NUMMY came to the shelter with her brother Pike, but Pike has been adopted, leaving Nummy all alone. Nummy is a sweet, playful cat who is curious about her surroundings. She can be a bit shy, but once she warms up she is a sweetheart. If you’re looking to brighten up your day, stop by and meet Nummy! Adoption fee is $70.

Bird Droppings
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
T
HIS column is going to make you wonder or make you dismissive. No middle ground about it. Unless you are a birder, so you are already empathetically attuned to the world around you. A person who steps out the door and checks the wind direction before the presence or absence of precipitation. A person who knows the difference between November sunlight and February sunlight; knows that one puts a luster on all it touches, the other an edge. A person who knows the subtle sounds of the season; the brittle laughter of reed grass, the admonitions of tree-top birds, the mutterings of rustling leaves. If you say ,“I know all these things,” then you are a birder. If you say, “What is this stupid nonsense?” then just skip this column. Look at the photos in the rest of this issue. If you say, “Hmmm, really? I’ve never noticed that,” then keep reading. There’s a whole sensory universe out there that is inviting your awareness.

All you have to do is... Become a bird watcher. Easy. The first step to gaining a toehold in the natural world is getting cozy with nature’s most obvious envoys: birds! They are everywhere and they’ll take you everywhere! Take clouds. You think you know clouds? Nope. Nobody knows clouds better than hawk watchers. I’ll bet I’ve spent
10,000 hours looking at the bottoms of clouds. Watching them form. Watching them unform. Watching eagles and osprey and vultures use them for a dramatic backdrop, then to conceal their presence. Now you see them, now you don’t. Take frozen lakes. The average person drives by a lake and says “frozen.” But a birder drives by a lake and checks the sunny edge to see whether spring has already picked winter’s lock, opening up dark lees that draw northbound waterfowl the way sweaters draw lint. Take the smell of spring. Spring has a smell? Lots actually, but I’m talking about that first, frail drift of spring-tinged air. It smells like wet. It smells like promise. Later it smells like earth. Then smoke. Then standing water. Then... Well, by the time it smells like green everybody can smell it (even the guy who is looking at the pictures right now). What do birds have to do with the smell

It’s chilly, but the birds are out if you know where to look. fall – sometimes twice a day! of spring? They lead you to it. If you go out in search of courting woodcock, you smell the bare earth that is both the launchpad for courting birds and the source of earthworms. If you smell smoke, you are in the forest (the smell is last year’s oak leaves) and you’re searching for newly arrived spring migrants. If you smell standing water, then you are looking for northbound waterfowl, followed by northbound shorebirds. And, of course, the sea has a smell in early spring. Cold and briny and refreshing. It’s a smell that goes with the sanderlings playing tag with lapping waves. Herring Gulls keen into the wind and Red-throated Loons quack just beyond the breakers. Summer visitors never know these sounds. But you can. So many elements in this tapestry of sight, scent, sound. A discovery at every turn. Starting with birds. Make a resolution that you’ll actually enjoy keeping – get out and enjoy nature. The Cape May Bird Observatory (CMBO) offers naturalist-led field trips throughout the year; everyday in spring and
help with anything you need – even things you didn’t know you needed yet. We always eager to help new birders! Check out the schedule of daily walks, pick up a free birding map and checklist and while you are there, don’t forget the newest books on and about birding and nature. Pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, binoculars and spotting scopes. Need a gift for a nature enthusiast friend or loved one but are clueless as to what they want? Pick up a gift card, redeemable at any of our New Jersey Audubon Centers throughout the state. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit us online www. BirdCapeMay.org, where birding Cape May is only a click away. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.
