The Police Blotter

NEW HAMPSHIRE: An officer attempted to stop John Coughlin for speeding to the hospital with his pregnant wife – he didn’t stop. She gave birth six minutes after arriving, but the cop cited John with a $500 ticket. The ticket was later overturned by a judge with a brain.

“By accounts from the Capes we are informed that a brig from St. Thomas’s with 400 barrels of powder, arms, dry goods & coming into our Capes on Saturday last, was chased by the [British warship] Kingfisher, and run aground off Cape May. Captains Barre and Weckes sent their boats to assist in unloading her; having taken out all the arms, cannon, 160 barrels of powder, and some dry goods, as much as their boats would hold.” – The Pennsylvania Ledger on July 6, 1776

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, prepared by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know this boardadorned eatery, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-yearold nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J The gambler is like the fisherman both have beginners luck. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with pork pad thai and a Philadelphia roll. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

WROTE enthusiastically last week about Cape May’s beautiful beaches and how they had been voted the second best in the country and the ninth best in the WORLD by the readers of Trip Advisor, the most influential travel website in the universe. Naturally, I was excited, and I still am. It’s a great piece of PR for the city, and we need it in these convention hall-less days… tourist dollars are vital for the city’s well-being. But only a few days after I wrote that column I read a tortuous story in The New Yorker, consistently the world’s best magazine – nowhere else do you get such an esotoric mix of brilliantly told stories. This particular article was written by a grief-stricken novelist whose wife, just days removed from celebrating her 30th birthday, died on vacation in Mexico after being thrown by a wave into the sand, breaking her neck. It reminded me, not surprisingly, of the safety crusade that was launched several years ago by former lifeguard and avid surfer Chad de Satnick. Chad, who broke his neck while surfing here 10 years ago but made a remarkable recovery, never seems to tire of campaigning for safer bathing and surfing, arguing that beach replenishment has made the city’s beaches dangerous because it changed the way the waves break. Chad successfully campaigned last year for the city to print quarter of a million leaflets highlighting these dangers to beach lovers. This was a big step forward, and the city has since confirmed that it is working with the Army Corps of Engineers to come up with a better beach replenishment process. Reading The New Yorker story underlined to me the dangers of body surfing in Cape

May. Personally, I never body surf. I’m a hopeless mess in the water, much as it pains me to admit this. But many do, and my point is this – this summer, enjoy our beautiful beaches and the coolness of the ocean, but when the waves are even a little gnarly, be really, really careful and maybe just don’t body surf. It was heartbreakingly random how that young woman lost her life in a surf that was full of happy, splashing bathers. ON A lighter note, this is a great time of year. The weather’s getting warmer (as I write, it’s beautiful, though The Weather Channel’s prediction of 78F was 10 degrees off the mark) and Cape May establishments are beginning to open, which always gives me a sense of expectation about the coming season and makes me hopeful that this will be The Best Summer Ever. Those of us who have spent the winter frequenting the same small number of eating establishments look forward to spring, and the slew of seasonal restaurant openings. While the year-round spots continue to serve up stellar food and drinks, April affords all of us a chance to broaden our palates. Looking for a Southwestern dish

³

served under the stars? You’ll find it at Gecko’s in the Carpenter’s Square Mall. Harpoon Henry’s is also reopening this month, which means you can enjoy a meal paired with the best sunsets in town. You can stop by Aleathea’s for a cocktail on their wraparound porch, pull up a chair at Martini Beach, tuck into Italian fare at Godmother’s, or enjoy Tisha’s consistently excellent menu at their new location on the Washington Street Mall. There isn’t space to list all the dining establishments getting back in on the action (though here are a few more: Carney’s, Marie Nicole’s, Oyster Bay, the Old Grange) so make sure you take a look at the advertisements and our Ultimate Cape May Food & Drink Chart on page 25. Then get out and enjoy them – it won’t be long until summer heats up and we’re all fighting to get off the wait lists and into the dining rooms. A HAPPY 25th birthday to Good Scents, one of my favorite places. Owner Cindy Huf and her staff will be celebrating with customers by offering wine, cheese and giveaways every Friday in April, from 6-8pm. The shop, on the corner of Carpenter’s Lane and Jackson Street, always smells amazing, thanks to the incense and candles, and always stocks an eclectic collection of goodies. FOR those who had heard a rumor that the summer arts and crafts show was being moved from the promenade (because of construction work on convention hall – if indeed there will BE any construction work) to Cape May Avenue, I can put your minds at ease. The show will be remaining on the promenade. Enjoy the weather, EZ lovers!

Chance Meetings

I

Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies

HAVE the body of a god. Buddha. Thanks to a 17-year-old, I’m okay with that. Among the musicians at last month’s Singer/Songwriter Cape May was a teenager armed with an arsenal of songs about positive self-image and being true to yourself. I sat in Martini Beach listening to her, and thought what a good message she had for kids. A bit later I was in the Boiler Room. Nearby at the bar was a paragon of manhood, a guy right out of Men’s Health. Half a foot taller than me, muscular arms, fashionable clothes, a chunky gold wristwatch, a Bowflex body. Yes, I was jealous. It hasn’t escaped my attention that despite their protestations to the contrary, women like hunks. In a recent Customer Service column, Molly Stone lamented the loss of interest from a “cute guy.” Not a smart guy, or a funny guy, nope, she said “cute.” Forty pages later, Stella Dixon spun a yarn involving an “adorable bachelor.” Not a considerate bachelor, or an intelligent bachelor, sorry, she said “adorable.” Clearly looks count for a lot.

So for that moment, I was jealous of that guy. And the moment passed, as the advice of that girl less than half my age registered. You know, I like who I am. Sure, I could lose some weight. Yes, being taller wouldn’t be bad, although it’s a genetic impossibility. Certainly, I could draw attention to my arms with a nice Rolex (when I win the lottery). But I wouldn’t try to fix those “shortcomings” by giving up what I already have, things like a good family and fantastic friends. I’ve

traveled America and the world and seen things that most people only find in books. I work at an interesting job that makes a difference in the community, and I come home to a fun dog in my cozy house. If that’s not what a particular woman wants, then I don’t think I want that particular woman. If the only thing women want is a goodlooking stud, Cape May has plenty of them. Go nuts. Enjoy them. But judging by what I’m hearing, you ladies aren’t happy with the results. You might want to look a little further, dig a bit deeper. There’s brains, humor, loyalty and adventure out there, lurking beneath the surface of plenty of those average-looking men. Do you want something more than just a pretty face? Send an email to info@ exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go out to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine eating establishments. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. (Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t.) But if you’re all about the looks, you’ll might have to keep cooking for one.

But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about cartoons. This week’s winner is Dolly Newby, 28, owner of Shore Guys Heating and Air, from Villas. Here are her answers: In cartoons, what carrot-chewing animal says, “Whats up, doc?” Bugs Bunny What is your favorite cartoon? Spongebob Squarepants Where did Wile E. Coyote buy his explosives to try and catch the road runner? ACME Dolly wins a $50 gift certificate to Cape May Wicker for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

FEAR I am Foghorn Leghorn. Or possibly Wile E. Coyote. That odd thought came to mind when I was rooting through a trunk in the basement and discovered my original correspondence with my old pal Walt Disney, some fewscore years ago. We had had the idea, when Walt was in town staying at The Admiral, of creating an animated character of some sort for the purpose entertaining children and Idiots. Over the course of a few malts, we agreed that the character should be an animal of sorts, and Walt was very much in favor of it being a pig called Chester, or possibly Jackson. I objected on several grounds. One, I am uncomfortable with anthropomorphizing animals that we eat, as it causes emotional confusion among children. Two, pigs are inherently not nice at all and will, if a man falls into their pen, strip him to the bone in 30 seconds. Three, I will not have my name mocked by a purveyor of children’s entertainment. I counterproposed a rat by the name of Walt, which he refused to consider, and so we

compromised on a mouse called Mickey (named after the barman at The Admiral that night, an Irish rogue who tried to water down our malt and whom we thrashed with sticks). I realized I still have Walt’s original sketches of the rodent Mickey, and so, not being one to waste paper, I wrapped some of my medals in them, for safe keeping, and put them back in a box. But the whole thing had me thinking: while I refuse to be a two-dimensional vermin, or a hand-drawn pig, were I to BE

a cartoon character, I think that Leghorn or that Coyote fella would be my lot. Or possibly Pepe Le Pew, the amorous skunk. I see in Leghorn that same confident, dauntless optimism that I have, and something of my booking voice and barrel chest. These are not bad things, I maintain, but I realize that on occasion I might annoy lesser mortals just a little, by always being right and unable not to point that out. Coyote, I realize, is a creature of boundless ambition and a refusal to accept defeat, qualities I admit to in myself, though I have yet to crash a rocket into a mountain with me sitting on it, or fall for many thousands of feet into a dusty canyon (at least, not without a parachute). As for Pepe, I would rather more aspire to be like that amorous skunk, than claim to be his kindred spirit – a gentleman does not pat himself on the back like that. Certainly, he and I know the underbelly of Paris, and in the past I, too, used to leave my (figurative) scent on a lady, such that no amount of scrubbing would erase her memory of yours truly.

Customer Service

A

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

T THE restaurant where I work, there are quite a few regulars. Because I’ve spent so many evenings with these folks, bearing witness to many of their special occasion dinners, I’ve become more a friend than just a server. With some of them, I’ve built relationships that extend beyond the dining room walls, even meeting them for after dinner drinks. But as much as I enjoy the company of these customers, there is a problem with befriending guests. When they come in, they’re anxious to fill me in on the happenings of their lives. I know all about Eleanor’s first grandbaby, Benny’s last hip replacement surgery, and poor Francine’s trouble getting pregnant. These conversations can cut into time I need for delivering food; unfortunately, there’s no tactful way to say: “Sorry to hear that you’re barren, Fran, but table six needs his refill.” Meanwhile, the dehydrated guest across the room is shooting me the evil eye and calculating his three percent tip. Equally frustrating are the folks on

the other side of the spectrum, who have no interest in talking to me whatsoever. When I approach the table to introduce myself or take an order, I get the who-areyou-and-why-are-you-interrupting look. Sometimes, these guests don’t acknowledge me at all. Non-responders, as I call them, refuse to stop talking while I explain the specials, or that the new oxtail dish does indeed have bones. I feel invisible, like I could run through the dining room wearing nothing but foie gras-fashioned nipple tassels and no one would even notice. Later, as I listen to Benny describe the difference between plastic and ceramic hip implants, I’ll hear the non-responder who

Not Your Everyday Hallmark Shop! Full Line of Seaside Souvenirs, Gifts & Cards New spring items arriving daily! Warm up with Bean Pod Soy Candles & Himalayan Salt Lamps

ordered the oxtail screeching about the bones she hadn’t been warned about. I can understand not wanting to pause conversation with friends in order to listen to a stranger describe an oxtail. What I cannot understand are those folks who ignore me for no reason. Yesterday, I asked a couple who’d been sitting in silence if they would care for coffee. I then hovered awkwardly, waiting for an answer. “Coffee? Espresso?” Silence. “Tea? Hot beverages?” Silence. The minute I walked away, this nonresponder shouted “decaf” in my direction. I would never come to your place of business to bombard you with small talk while you’re working, and I would never come to your place of business to ignore you, either. After dinner, if you want to meet for that post-shift cocktail at the Pilot House, I’ll be happy to chit-chat, and I won’t even mind if you ignore me. Until then, while we all work on finding that happy conversation medium, I wouldn’t be surprised to spot your waitress wearing nipple tassels in the dining room.

The Answer Lady

T

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I have a good friend who is great fun when we’re alone. But when we’re with other people, she makes fun of me and puts me down. We met some friends for happy hour at Cabanas Friday night, and she made jokes at my expense the whole time. I was mortified. I said something to her about it, but she blew me off, saying she’s just joking around and that I should lighten up. What do you make of this? – Hurt Dear Hurt Hmm. You don’t indicate your age here, gentle reader, but the Answer Lady assumes that if you’re going to Cabanas for happy hour you’re over the age of 14, even though neither one of you is acting that way. Now we could sit around all day trying to figure out what is making your friend behave like this. Perhaps she feels infe-

Wise answers to perplexing questions

rior to you, and her “humor” is a defense mechanism. Perhaps she is completely oblivious to her own behavior. But although your friend’s behavior is completely abhorrent, the Answer Lady is mystified as to why you would tolerate this abusive treatment. Granted, you don’t want to get into a spat in a public place – they call it “happy hour” after all, not “fisticuffs hour,” but, as the great Eleanor Roosevelt once said, no one can make you feel inferior without your consent. Call her on it, privately.

Dear Answer Lady My favorite comedian is performing in Atlantic City in June, and I’ve asked my husband to get tickets for my birthday. He has agreed, but says that I should take my best friend or my sister, because he doesn’t care for this particular funnyman. But I feel bad doing that, because I’d rather go with him! What should I do? – Funny Girl Dear Funny Are you telling the Answer Lady that you would rather sit next to a stoic, unsmiling (and possibly snoring) man than next to a woman who is laughing her head off? The Answer Lady is confused. Unless you and your husband spend 24 hours per day attached at the hip, there is no earthly reason why you can’t enjoy a night out laughing with a girlfriend or your sister. Your thoughtful husband has already told you that this is not an activity that he would enjoy, so please don’t invent a reason to fret about this. PS: The Answer Lady would just like to mention here that she is a big fan of comedians, so if your sister and your best friend are busy, please keep her in mind.

LCMR Athlete Of The Week: Meaghan Mann

«

THREE sport senior standout Meaghan Mann of Lower Cape May Regional High School is really impressed with how the girls’ lacrosse team played against their rival Middle Township last Friday night. Mann scored three goals in the team’s 12-11 loss to the Panthers. “It was a hard-fought game,” said Mann. Mann started playing lacrosse her freshman year and has loved it ever since. Now she’s the top player as a senior, working to lead her team to another state tournament run. Mann’s younger sister Victoria, 16, also plays on the lacrosse team. Meaghan says that she loves playing with her sister because they push each other on and off the field. Liz Mann, 19, the oldest of the three sisters, played soccer with Meaghan and Victoria last season, so you can only imagine how competitive their house is. Barbara Mann, an aide at LCMR, and Ken Mann, a builder, help Meaghan maintain her busy schedule. Mann plans to attend James Madison University and major in elementary education. She will also play club soccer at the university. PHOTO AND STORY BY CURTIS GIFT

The Cape May Crossword

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Dan Mathers SO YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: Cartoons. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. ACROSS 1 . With an extremely large head and tiny little wings, this yellow bird should never have been able to fly. 3 . Her sex appeal, cutesy voice and ditzy charm made her a star of the “talkies” in the 1930s. 11 . The raspy voice and speech impediment of this avian have been imitated many times through the years. 14 . The laugh of this prankster is as iconic as his red, white and blue feathers. 16 . You have to imagine the soles of his feet were rather callused from powering his car. 17. “No need to fear,” this canine is here. 21 . These three superhero girls had enormous heads and huge eyes. 24 . He eats spinach. Need we say more? 25. He’s the bald, beer-drinking nuclear factory employee whose three children haven’t aged in more than 20 seasons. 26. He’s the blind, adventurous and oblivious old man who accidentally finds his way out of trouble time and again. 27 . This good-humored national park resident can’t say no to a pick-a-nick basket. 28. This feline slobbers when he talks and

Insert swine here... 22 Down.

never manages to swallow his yellow prey. DOWN 2. He has what is arguably the best-known catch phrase in cartoons: “What’s up, doc?” 4. He even cut the roast beast after his heart grew three sizes. 5. This character began in a series of shorts that came before and after Inspector Clouseau films. 6. His dogged pursuit of a speedy bird made him one of ACME’s best customers. 7. This cartoon about four foul-mouthed boys from Colorado is the most successful show in the history of the Comedy Central network. 8. The criminals usually feel they would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for this pup and his meddling friends. 9. He was the moose whose lucky mishaps often saved his friend Rocky. 10. He is the most iconic cartoon of all time and the face of one of the world’s largest companies.

1 2. “Here I come to save the day,” this rodent would say before rescuing his friends from a variety of feline villains. 13. These teenage slackers brought their own brand of comedy (and stupidity) to latenight MTV. 14. He’s the honey-hungry, lovable resident of the Hundred Acre Wood. 15. This gullible character doesn’t understand that he’ll never get to kick the football. 18. This black and orange aquatic avian had a variety of personalities depending on how Warner Bros wanted to use him. 19. This cat-and-mouse pairing are constantly tormenting one another. 20. This is the last name of George, Elroy, Judy and Jane, the family of the future. 22. This sweet little swine has been stuttering “That’s all folks!” for the better part of a century. 23. This anime character and his Mach 5 car were adapted for an American audience.

Activity Of The Week

A

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Time for a lecture...

LEXANDER Pope warned that “a little learning is a dangerous thing,” but ignorance also has its risks. In a town like Cape May, where historians abound, you’d better risk a little learning, just so you can keep up with the conversation. One great source of learning is Historic Cold Spring Village, a living history museum located three miles from Cape May. Fans rely on HCSV for interesting recreations of life in South Jersey during the “age of homespun,” from about 1790 to 1840. The museum is closed in winter, but history lovers are treated to a spring lecture series to tide them over until the Memorial Day opening. The lecture series fits with the time period HCSV recreates. At the turn of the 19th century, Americans were eager to learn – and the History Channel was still 169 years in the future. Thomas Jefferson, president from 1801 to 1809, advocated education in the public interest, believing that an educated electorate would lead to a successful democracy. In 1826, the National American Lyceum began to offer lectures for adults on topics ranging

from politics to fine arts. The lectures were very popular, as history buffs joined with fans of science and art to learn and share their knowledge. The live lecture format was interactive – you spoke directly to the expert, instead of tweeting your questions. Live lectures still provide a connection unrivaled by technology, as the HCSV lecture series proves. Topics include “John Barry: An American Hero in the Age of Sail,” led by author Tim McGrath; “Jersey Shore Place

Names,” led by author Lee Ireland; and for the kids, a discussion of the Nicky Fifth series of books by Lisa Funari Williver, in which young Nicky and his faithful companion TBone share adventures across the Garden State. The final installment, on April 13, is “Monmouth Court House: The Battle that Made the American Army,” led by historian Joseph G Bilby (we Jersey girls, who grew up playing softball in the Molly Pitcher leagues, have a special place in our hearts for this battle). If you sometimes envy your children for the things they’re learning in school, the HCSV lecture series is for you. You can support Historic Cold Spring Village by attending “Feasting on History,” the annual gala fundraiser scheduled for May 3. Sample food from Cape May’s best restaurants and wine from local wineries at Hangar #1 of the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum. Tickets are $70 per person and $650 for a table of ten. More information is available at www.hcsv.org. Live dangerously – go learn a little something. Next week: The Garden Club’s “Birds of a Feather”

HAT is it about Say Goodnight, Gracie that, two years after Cape May Stage produced this play with Joel Rooks in a tour-de-force performance, people are still talking about it and asking the theatre to bring it back? Well, the people at Cape May Stage have listened and are opening the season with this hilarious valentine to show business and a love story that still inspires. Thirty or more people were turned away each night as patrons lined up to get tickets back in 2009. Joel Rooks loved his time with Cape May Stage, so you’ll soon see him bicycling around town as he rehearses for this extraordinary performance. Linda Steenrod, owner of The Billmae Cottage, is just one of the people who could not get a ticket the first time around, “But now I’m on the board of trustees,” she joked. Although Joel Rooks has performed this role all over the United States, he still wants to rehearse with his friend and colleague Roy Steinberg before starting the new production. “Joel is the consummate artist, always fine-tuning and exploring his performance,” enthuses Steinberg. “Our theatre space demands that the director be well aware of keeping the blocking fluid since there are two sections of the audience that need to be addressed” says Steinberg. This season, there is a new stage manager in the house and some of the production values have been improved to bring the

Left: Joel Rooks returns to Cape May Stage on May 11 to reprise his role as George Burns in “Say Goodnight, Gracie.” “George Burns was born again at Cape May Stage and it was as if he never left,” hailed Jacob Schaad of the “Cape May Gazette” in 2009. Below: Brad Zimmerman brings his hilarious one-man show, “My Son, The Waiter – A Jewish Tragedy,” to Cape May audiences as the first Second Stage production of the season. audience an higher level of entertainment. Say Goodnight, Gracie is as much a story about immigration as it is about George Burns. Early Jewish immigrants changed their names to sound more American. Within five blocks of the lower eastside of Manhattan lived some of the most important names of early television, film, and vaudeville. The Marx Brothers, Jack Benny and Jimmy Durante all came up together. They learned how to live frugally – making soup out of ketchup and hot water. And

3/31: Dylan Rutherford Presented General Billy Mitchell Award

«

The General Billy Mitchell Award is earned by Civil Air Patrol cadets who have successfully completed the second phase of the cadet program. It marks the end of the enlisted phase of the cadet program; cadets are promoted to Cadet Second Lieutenants upon receipt and, by extension, Cadet Officers. The award is given in honor of Maj. Gen. William “Billy” Mitchell, former Deputy Chief of the Army Air Service and military aviation visionary. In order to earn this award, cadets must pass a series of leadership, aerospace and physical fitness tests and attend moral leadership training for each achievement from Cadet Airman Basic through Cadet Chief Master Sergeant. In addition, cadets must attend a military-style encampment before this award is made, and have maintained active membership in the Civil Air Patrol for at least 18 months since joining. Just 15% of Civil Air Patrol cadets achieve the Mitchell Award.

TINKEY is just a bit confused about suddenly living in a cage instead of a comfortable home. With the unique black markings on her white face, Tinkey is strikingly different, and given the chance, she’ll easily adapt to a new home. This six-yearold spayed female is soft as silk, and just waiting for you! Adoption fee is $20.

OCIE is a friendly five-year-old spayed female tabby. She arrived along with her companion, Trooper. Ocie will come right up to you and gently touch her nose to yours, as if she’s Eskimo kissing. We’d love it if Ocie and Trooper could be adopted together, but will consider an individual application. Adoption fee is $35.

«

TROOPER and his companion, Ocie, arrived at the shelter together. Trooper is a three-year-old brown, gray and silver male tabby and is extremely friendly. If you take a close look, you’ll see his eyes are especially striking. We will waive one cat’s adoption fee if they are adopted as a pair. On his own, Trooper’s adoption fee is $35.

Bird Droppings

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

D

ON’T look now, but they are back. Or at least, they have been sighted. Purple Martins, I mean. North America’s grandest swallow. You’re wondering why it’s called “Martin” if it’s really a swallow, right? I don’t know. But I do know why its scientific name is Progne subis. Progne is the Greek who was changed into a swallow. Subis means “name of an unknown bird.” I guess we’re no further along than we were before. Anyway, Purple Martins are back. After a few months in Brazil, the birds are vaulting the Gulf of Mexico and homing in on breeding territories in North America. One of the closest and most viable is in Cape May Point State Park. When they get here, they’ll find their “houses” ready for them, thanks to their own property manager, CMBO volunteer Dave Thomas. Yes, I did say houses. Martins are home

bodies. In fact, they are almost wholly dependent upon our good will. Only in the Southwest are Martins still partial to natural cavities (like those excavated by large woodpeckers). Not just home bodies – condo bodies. The birds are communal; partial to having nest door (and first f loor and upstairs) neighbors.

We’re talking about Martin neighbors now, but human neighbors are also welcome. Even before Europeans settled on these shores, native people were hanging up hollow gourds to attract Martins to their encampments. There were two reasons for this. First, the birds are wonderfully vocal. The musical chips and chortles and bleats are as much a part of summer in Cape May as wind, sand and waves. The second reason is their voracious appetite for f lying insects. Large insects. Insects in the greenhead size class. Gooooo Martins. Eat ‘em up, boy. Some people mistakenly believe that Martins eat mosquitos. They don’t. These tiny insects do not offer enough energetic bang for the buck for Martins to deal with. Also, Martins commonly forage during the day (when mosquitoes commonly don’t) and Martins also commonly forage at very high altitudes (altitudes that mosquitoes, which feed on ground-hugging prey, gener-

Purple Martins make picky tenants the chirps and whorls of sound and iridescent blue-black f lashes darting in and out of the boxes. They are checking out the neighborhood, but in a couple more weeks, they’ll start moving in and by summer (just like in Cape May on a holiday weekend), vacancies are hard to find. If you’re still not sure what to look or listen for, head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point – THE information spot for anything to do with nature. The center is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Ask any of our staff – they are always glad to help with anything you need – even

ally avoid). You probably know all this. Purple Martins rank among North America’s favorite birds. The thing you would most like to know is how to attract Purple Martins to a Purple Martin house near you. That’s more difficult. Some people have been trying for years without success. First, you need a big open area. How big? Football field big or bigger. If you live in woodlands or in a place with lots of nice shade trees, you are out of luck. Then you need a Purple Martin house or a lot of Purple Martin calibrated gourds. Then you will need lots of insects. No problem, you think. Then you will need to do something about the starlings and House Sparrows that will inevitably try and take over the Purple Martin box before and after the Martins arrive. With a pure heart and lots of luck, you too may fall into the ranks of Purple Martin landlords. But if all you want to do is enjoy them, try Cape May Point State Park. Take a drive (or walk) over to Cape May Point State Park and look up at those white boxes high atop the poles. Then listen for

things you didn’t know you needed yet. While you are there, pick up the schedule of daily walks, a free birding map and checklist. Did you know that the CMBO offers naturalist-led field trips throughout the year; everyday in spring and fall – sometimes twice a day! And don’t forget the newest books on and about birding and nature. Pick up a bargain from the used and vintage book selection, or some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise. Need a gift for a nature enthusiast friend or loved one but are clueless as to what they want or need? Pick up a gift card, redeemable at any of our New Jersey Audubon Centers throughout the state. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit www.BirdCapeMay.org where birding is just a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Movie Column

W

Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Win Win”

RESTLING. You can wrestle with today’s tough issues, with your spouse, your in-laws, your conscience. Or you can wrestle with the challenges of everyday life. Enter Mike Flaherty (played by Paul Giamatti in the new film Win Win), a lawyer wrestling to keep his practice alive. A former student wrestler, he also coaches wrestling on the side for his alma mater. The team is about as successful as his law practice. Just as his financial outlook is looking as grim as ever, he learns that one of his elderly clients Leo Poplar (Burt Young), who is wrestling with dementia, needs a guardian. The job pays $1,500 per month. Mike tries unsuccessfully to find Leo’s daughter, so it appears that Leo will be turned over as a ward of the state. Instead, Mike takes the job, promises the judge and Leo that he can stay in his house (which the old man very much wants), then promptly parks him in a nursing home. Despite that jerk move, Mike Flaherty is not all bad. Leo’s grandson, Kyle (played by Alex Shaffer) runs away from Leo’s elusive

Alex Shaffer and Paul Giamatti in "Win Win" daughter (meaning that she is hard to pin down — sorry, last wrestling gag, no kidding!). Mike takes the teen in and discovers Kyle is an expert wrestler, a fact that Mike has no trouble exploiting — until the truth comes out. Win Win is a film about life’s wrestling matches, the ones we have to face daily. And

it is a fantastic comedy/drama. Giamatti is as convincing as ever, giving you insight into his flawed but loveable character. And he is surrounded by a cast of actors you have either seen for years in character roles or should keep your eye on as future stars. Amy Ryan plays Mike’s wife, and while she doesn’t always pull off the Jersey girl attitude (the film is set in New Providence, NJ), she still delivers. Shaffer’s portrayal of Leo’s grandson, a kid who is both aloof and longing for deep, strong relationships, is wonderful. And it is a who’s who of character actors. You’ll recognize Leo from TV and the Rocky movies. Jeff Tambor plays Mike’s law associate, and you’ll remember him in at least a half dozen other appearances. Melanie Lynskey, most popular as Rose on Two and a Half Men but making guest appearances in no fewer than three major feature films a year, it seems, plays Kyle’s mom. Writer/director Tom McCarthy, who gave us such great films as The Visitor and The Station Agent (and if you had to see one, see The Station Agent) delivers again. A win for film lovers and story lovers alike.

The Dating Column

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island

W

HEN you’re a teenager, you never doubt that, someday, you’ll meet your soulmate and live happily ever after. You’ll pass on a perfectly good guy simply because he doesn’t appreciate your Tracy Chapman cassette collection. Then you grow up and realize that happily ever after is harder to come by than you thought, and you start lowering your standards. I’ve learned that the lower your standards go, the more bad dates you’ll have. I’ve been on a great deal, and I’ve written about many of them in this column. But the truth is, the most frustrating dates aren’t actually the bad ones at all. The most frustrating dates, ironically enough, are with the really wonderful men. I went out with one such guy yesterday. I was impressed with Zach, a Cape May bachelor, from the very start. I’ve always complained about men who ask a woman out and then follow up with something along the lines of: “Um, where should we go?” But when Zach asked me to go on a date, he already had a destination – the Camden aquarium – in mind.

While Zach waited for me to give him an answer, I started to panic. After all, I didn’t really know him yet and, like any overly cautious girl who assumes every guy is a psychopath, I’m reluctant to take a road trip with a stranger. I asked if he wouldn’t mind going to dinner closer to Cape May instead, and he agreed. When Zach picked me up, I lost any misgivings I’d had. In his tie and ironed shirt, holding a bouquet of tulips, Zach looked more

like the boy next door than a potential psycho. He waited patiently while I found a vase for my flowers, and then took me out for a threecourse meal that cost more than my rent. He pulled out every chair, opened every door, and even walked me to my front stoop at the end of the night. Zach was a perfect gentleman, and I had a lovely time with him. The problem is that the chemistry just wasn’t there. At one point, during a lull, Zach asked me what my favorite color is and I asked him what his favorite time of day is – not exactly titillating conversation. I don’t know what, if anything, will happen next. Perhaps we’ll never go out for another date. Even when everything goes right between two people, things aren’t necessarily quite right. This probably should be disheartening, but I actually feel grateful. He may not have given me much fodder for my writing on what men do wrong, but Zach did give me something that is far more important; he gave me some of my faith back. There are gentlemen out there after all and, if I’m really lucky, one of them might just be a Tracy Chapman fan.

For Buyers: Still do a home Inspection, sign the “As Is” addendum and make sure it is incorporated into the Sales Contract, & it should have been explained to them carefully and completely.
