The biggest property cleared in the 1869 fire was the site of the United States Hotel.

The owner of the hotel, Charles Conway, had just purchased the United States a week before the fire for $80,000. With no money and no source of income, rebuilding the hotel was not a possibility. Instead, the acreage was subdivided and sold as individual parcels of land. Storefronts and businesses were built along Washington Street, cementing the area as Cape May’s commercial district. Ramblings From The Editors

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

e’ve been getting reactions all week to the previous comments in this column about the assault following the GABLES event earlier this month. First off, a clarification – we heard from Doreen Talley at GABLES on this.

They were distressed to hear about the incident (and also distressed that our comments were the first they had heard of it), but she also wanted to stress that GABLES always provides security personnel at their events, so attendees can rest assured they will be safe. Also, the alleged assault happened outside of Carney’s, not Cabanas as we originally heard it. Finally, it didn’t take place directly following the event, but a couple of hours later. We are hearing, through other sources, that the offenders in question have crossed the law before, and this is not the first time they’ve harassed someone because of their sexuality. The last (known) incident was verbal, however, not physical. But these things seem to escalate, don’t they? We called the CMPD several times over the past few days to check on the progress of their investigation, but they were remarkably uncommunicative. one man’s trash is another’s treasure, it’s said – hence, the humble yard sale. West Cape May’s fourth annual borough-wide yard sale is slated for next Saturday, May 14, and it’s always a big event. We wrote recently about how the reopening of certain restaurants was a sunny confirmation that the season would soon be upon us in America’s Original Seaside Resort... the season when we all make merry, make money and make new friends. There’s another happy harbinger of summer, and that’s the opening of Cape May Stage. The theatre company makes its debut this year on Wednesday, May 11 with Say Goodnight, Gracie, which returns from last year due to popular demand – the performances were pretty much a sell-out every night in 2010.

The show stars Joel Rooks and is based on the reminiscences of comedian George Burns, tracing his life from his childhood on the Lower East Side to his momentous meeting with Gracie Allen, who became his partner on stage and in life. The show runs at Cape May Stage’s beautiful playhouse at 8pm Wednesday through Sunday, and there are also 3pm matinee performances on weekends. The best time to enjoy a new show at Cape May Stage is the official opening night, because there is always a fun after-party where you can meet the cast.

In this case, that would be at Harry’s, at the Montreal Inn, on Thursday, May 12. We’ll see you there!

This worthy organization assists victims of spinal cord injuries, like Chad DeSatnick, who was injured in 2001 while surfing at Poverty Beach. Once again the race will have the Wheelchair Division as part of both the 5k and 10k runs.

I

hadn’t been to Rio Station since the blizzard of February, 2010 – my house had no electricity or cable, my new TV was a paperweight, Rio Station was the only place open and showing the Super Bowl. Maybe I only go there to commemorate life’s little tragedies, because it’s where my friend Sonya and I went to celebrate her divorce.

Rio Station isn’t entirely romantic – more like unpretentious and familyfriendly. The booths are cozy, and you needn’t worry about breaking any fine china. When you need tasty, familiar food, reasonable prices, somewhere the whole family can go, there’s Rio Station. I had a bowl of chili, a nice salad and beef tips marsala. Sonya had a salad and chicken parmesan. No bells or whistles, just a tasty and satisfying meal at a price roughly half of what you’d pay at many other places.

Sonya’s been dealt a bad hand, but she’s working past it. Divorcing her abusive addict husband and earning her degree were big steps on her path to a new life. Now she’s got kids in the military, a dead-end job, and

she’s readying to move away in search of a fresh start. In the midst of all this, she’s started dating again. Although, by her own admission, she hates men.

I’m torn. On one hand, I’m happy to be her friend and help her through her problems. It’s a good feeling to be there for her, as close to knightly chivalry as a guy can get these days. On the other hand, I’d kind of been hoping that when Sonya was ready to date again, I’d be her first phone call.

We get along famously, and she knows I’m interested, so why am I not dateable? And since I’ve run out of hands for counting the number of men she’s dating, I’m ticked off that she’s dating while she can’t stand men.

Talk about false pretenses! On behalf of all men, I protest.

Maybe it all comes down to expectations.

If you go to Rio Station expecting a sommelier, you’ll be disappointed. And if I expect to be both Sonya’s shoulder to lean on and the next love of her life, I know I’ll be disappointed. Of course, any guy who dates hostile Sonya will likely be disappointed.

But if you stay realistic and try to keep your expectations reasonable, things usually come out alright.

The Old Fogey

O

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

f all my inventions (and there are many, from the telephone, to the repeating rif le, to electricity, but I am not one to boast) I am most proud of the sombrero.

I was rather ashamed of my minor part in introducing the Spanish conquistadors to the New World (afraid they were about to discover Cape May, I sabotaged the helm of Cortez’s ship at the last moment, sending us a long way south. I expected a barren swamp; who knew there was a thriving if rather gullible civilization there already?) and sought to give the Mexicans some distinctive traits to help them form a national identity. My first plan, the retaking of the Alamo, was not a huge success.

So, I hit upon the notion of a national hat: a fine hat is the making of a man, I have always thought, and I saw the American cowboys in their fine Stetsons, the Frenchies in their little berets, those Germans in whatever helmets they could get their heads into, and the English in their bowler hats.

So, I thought, we needed something that combined confidence with a tendency to the f lamboyant, and a practical need for shade. I labored long and hard, discarding such brilliant but f lawed ideas as a cap in the shape of a paper airplane (very chic and aerodynamic, but prone to lifting off in a high wind), a perfectly spherical chromed helmet (very fancy indeed, and proof against laser fire, should we be invaded from space, but costing the GNP of Mexico for one helmet) and a large top hat

with a handle on the side that when wound vigorously, played revolutionary songs and unfurled a f lag and sunshade (just plain silly).

In the end, I devised the perfect solution: the sombrero. I had some scale issues to start – my first model was some 30 feet in diameter, offering excellent sun protection and the surface area for enough spangles to spell out “VIVA MEXICO” around the rim in ten-foot-high letters, but tending to weigh in at a good half ton, limiting the wearers to circus strongmen or whole villages at once. My next prototype was three inches wide, and did sit at a rakish angle on the side of one’s skull, but tended to be mistaken for a cockroach by helpful strangers, who would f lip it off, causing huge offense and an immediate challenge of a duel.

That last fact rather added to its appeal, so though I adjusted the dimensions to be less foolish, I did keep the sombrero’s air of confidence and menace. That means that to this day, a chap puts one on and tends to be both sexually irresistible and also prone to drunkenness and fisticuffs.

Wildwood Catholic fundraiser provides chips for a cause

ometimes you’re just itching to gamble, but Atlantic City seems just out of reach. If you’re eager to roll the dice a bit closer to home, Wildwood Catholic High School has just the event for you. This Friday, May 6 at 6pm, the school will offer a “Casino Royale” fundraiser. Proceeds benefit Wildwood Catholic, which was almost shuttered last year due to lack of funding.

Since then, alumni, parents and students have made a concerted effort to ensure the future of their school. This fundraiser is their latest bright idea.

Elaine Schiano of the Wildwood Catholic PTA says there will be around 13 gaming tables sponsored by local business and offering games like blackjack, Texas hold’em poker, craps and roulette.

The games will be conducted by Tumbling Dice’s professional croupiers, most of whom have worked in Atlantic City casinos. When not betting, guests will enjoy butlered hors d’oeuvres, a light buffet and dessert. This fare, plus $25 worth of chips, is included in the $50 admission price.

After almost closing last year, Wildwood Catholic has rebounded with a variety of fundraising initiatives.

While guests will be gambling at Casino Royale night, they won’t take home money. Schiano explains that the fundraiser is “kind of like an arcade for adults.

They get tickets, not cash, which can be put towards a 50/50 raff le or an auction of various prizes.” Many of the prizes in this auc-

tion are donated by local businesses, and include two VIP tickets to “Late Night with David Letterman,” a Cole Hamels autographed print and several island getaways.

Schiano has been thrilled with the community response to the event. “There are so many businesses participating,” says Schiano. “The Ravioli House is donating all the desserts, and Congress Hall donated their Grand Ballroom. Businesses from Cape May, Wildwood, Stone Harbor and Cape May Court House are all taking part.” It’s easy to see why the community is so eager to get involved: Wildwood Catholic High School is the only Catholic high school in Cape May County. After last year’s near-closure, the community is rallying behind the school.

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

hen you’re a kid, you don’t picture your teacher as having a life outside the classroom.

You’re a little freaked out when you see her at the mall, shopping for trousers or buying toilet paper like a normal person. Intellectually, you know that your teacher must exist outside of the school building, but you can’t picture her doing anything with her free time but wiping chalkboards or sharpening pencils.

It’s the same with celebrities. We know that Xena, the warrior princess, isn’t a real person. We know the woman who played Xena on TV isn’t really an Amazon fighter seeking redemption in Ancient Greece. Yet if I ran into Lucy Lawless wearing anything but a leather corset, I’d be taken aback.

While I don’t mean to compare myself to your second grade teacher or Hollywood’s most famous warrior princess, I can relate to anyone whose work persona overshadows her real persona. I don’t wear a corset on the job, but I do wear an apron, and it pigeonholes me just the same.

For starters, a waitress is not supposed to use the bathroom like a normal human.

Over the course of a shift, I sometimes run into customers in the ladies’ room, and they always look stunned. I’m about to drop off the food, handle the bread, and carry the wine, so my bladder be dammed. As customers eye me suspiciously, I feel compelled to wash my hands for an absurdly long time. After all, that employees-mustwash-hands-before-returning-to-work sign applies to me. Even though the sign should read: “All people must wash their hands before returning to whatever.”

martini, the man who’d been dining on table four scowls. We both know I’ve just spent his entire tip on a single cocktail, and he stiffens with resentment. His money hasn’t gone toward my rent or my groceries, but toward my buzz. For a moment, I feel compelled to convince him that I am, in fact, a fiscally responsible person.

But then there are those times when I enjoy running into former guests, at least the rude ones. There’s nothing more satisfying than plopping my beach chair next to the woman who spent the previous evening snapping her fingers in my direction.

Not only do I now exist for her outside of the dining room, but we’re sharing the same stretch of sand, maybe even toting the same brand of beach towel.

You see, the dynamic between a server and her guests can change as quickly as I can change out of my apron. In the dining room, I may be just a waitress. But I’ve learned that what separates a waitress from a warrior princess, well, that’s little more than a wardrobe change.

Dear Answer Lady I put a swing set in my yard for my kids, and now every brat in the neighborhood wants to hang out at my house. I don’t have anything against these kids, but some aren’t very well-behaved and several are older and bigger than my kids. I have enough trouble keeping tabs on my own offspring, much less every child on the block, but I don’t want to be the neighborhood mean guy. – Dad Dear Dad Why not? Every neighborhood has a curmudgeon, might as well be you – just watch your back on Mischief Night. The Answer Lady jests, of course. You are well within your rights to want to protect your children and your property, not to mention your sanity. Remain firm, but kind.

Approach the parents of these children,

Wise answers to perplexing questions

and tell them you don’t mind having neighborhood urchins over occasionally, when you or your wife are available to keep an eye on things, but simply because you’ve installed a swing-set in your yard doesn’t mean it’s a daycare center. Advise parents that misbehavior of any kind will not be tolerated, and any offenders will be subject to dismissal immediately, never to return.

You can suggest that parents accompany their child to your yard to supervise, which will likely never happen, so problem solved.

Dear Answer Lady I’ve been working the past couple of summers at one of Cape May’s better restaurants. My boyfriend wants me to get a job there for his sister. I’ve never worked with her, but hesitate to recommend her because she’s a total airhead. I don’t want to be accountable if she gets a job and screws up. Suggestions? – Rock & a Hard Place Dear Rock If your boyfriend’s sister wants to apply for a job at your place of employment, it is her prerogative. Just as it is your prerogative to tell the manager, if asked, that she is an utter twit whose employment will no doubt result in the immediate downfall of said establishment. The Answer Lady jests, of course. You can say you are acquainted with her, that she is a decent human being, but that you cannot attest to her work ethic as you have never worked with her. Whatever happens beyond that depends upon her, and the Answer Lady is hard-pressed to imagine any restaurant owner in town who would hold you accountable for the shortcomings of an acquaintance.

LCMR Athlete Of The Week: Matthew McGaffney

«

Junior Matthew McGaffney, second singles tennis star, is ready to bring the heat for another successful LCMR boys’ tennis season. Parents Renee and Matthew McGaffney of North Cape May have supported Matt since he first picked up a tennis racquet at the age of eight.

McGaffney has had an outstanding personal record of 5-2, while the LCMR tennis team has an overall record of 4-3. McGaffney’s season highlight was beating his rival from Middle Township, Jeremey Novick, 6-0 at the Cape May Tennis Club Tournament.

Among McGaffney’s current goals is that the LCMR tennis squad will advance beyond the second round of the state tournament this year.

What started as “something fun to do in the summer,” according to McGaffney, has clearly evolved into a passion. “I hope to continue playing tennis in college, but that will depend on where I decide to go.

That will really be the determining factor,” said McGaffney.

No matter what his decision, it seems pretty clear that McGaffney will leave his own indelible mark on the Lower Cape May Regional boys’ tennis program.

all it the golden rule of garage sale shopping, or “garage sailing.” Towns like Cape May, full of unique, charming shops, have great garage sales. This is no paradox – start with good stuff, and you’ll have good stuff to sell. Voila – garage sale paradise!

Selling your unwanted stuff is the ancient way to recycle. Garage sales – or rummage, yard, estate or tag sales – offer used items for sale outdoors. “Rummage” originally meant “the act of arranging cargo on a ship.” When they reached port, captains held “rummage sales” on the docks to get rid of their ballast, packing material and unclaimed freight.

Homeowners borrowed the term, and the American shift to suburbia gave us “garage sale” in 1966.

Garage sales are sparked by spring cleaning, according to the experts. The little bike with training wheels works, but now you need room for the big two-wheeler. The music stand that was essential at 14 may be superfluous at 24. The stuffed marlin scares the dog. Two people merge households and

have extra furniture. Time for a garage sale!

The most popular items at garage sales are kids’ clothing, toys and board games, purses, tools and cookware. You may not use the item as designed – perhaps an old kettle makes an interesting flowerpot or a saw becomes a wall hanging. Shoppers tend to prefer “hard” furniture to “soft” or upholstered furniture because the hard stuff is easier to clean, and

less likely to harbor bugs.

Garage sales also require a willingness to haggle, because sellers expect to get 30% of the original retail price, and buyers expect to pay 10%. Sellers are advised to organize, advertise and send their kids away for the day – nothing kills a sale faster than a fight over a forgotten favorite. If the goal is to clean house, consider quantity discounts. For $5 a bag, shoppers may take away more than they intended, leaving the seller with a clutter-free home. Shoppers are advised to bring cash, boxes, newspaper to wrap fragile items and a bungee cord to hold the trunk closed.

Garage sales are about more than money.

They can also be about finding a home for your treasures. The porch rockers my mother bought at a Cape May garage sale in 1996 – for $10 each – served our family for 14 years before she sold them at her garage sale – for $5 each. It makes her smile to see them in use on a neighbor’s porch.

So hop on your bike on a sunny spring day in Cape May and scout the garage sales.

Joel Rooks’ triumphant return in Say Goodnight, Gracie is the perfect way to launch the new season. This play was the Tony Nominee for Best Play and Winner of the Outer Critics Circle. The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

t just so happened that I was standing in the Cape May Bird Observatory, staring over the Director’s shoulder, when the wooden crate arrived. It took about half an hour to get all the wood screws out of it. Another five minutes to decode the key to the impregnable wrapping job. Now it will take me about a lifetime to recover. What the crate housed was just about the most gorgeous oil painting of shorebirds and horseshoe crabs ever savored by human eyes.

The artist was Robert Bateman, who is arguably the most celebrated wildlife artist in North America.

“I asked him to donate a field sketch,” the director rasped.

Me? I was speechless.

“Will you look at the date? He just painted this. He painted this specifically for the CMBO for CAPE MAYgration’s Silent Auction."

I was speechless.

“Nobody could look at this now and not want it on their wall,” the Director

prophesied.

I was speechless.

But I was also in the majority that wanted ownership. An original Bateman.

Depicting Cape May’s signature wildlife spectacle. It almost qualified as a once-ina-lifetime opportunity, except for several undermining things. The Bateman original was not the only centerpiece in the

I

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island

love you, but I am not IN love with you. I don’t want to hold you back.

You’re too good for me. It’s not you; it’s me. I’ve heard them all – break-up lines about as clichéd as they are false – and all from the same Cape May guy.

But there’s no need to lie. I know that, despite what this man says, it’s not him, it’s me. I am a boring pansy who stinks at a lot of things.

I’m boring. I organize my daily planner and watch infomercials for fun. I’ve never gone zip-lining in Honduras. I’ve never smoked a hookah. I’ve never been on TV, on the radio, or on a motorcycle. I’ve never snorkeled in a Turkish lagoon. I’ve never hosted a canyon swinging launch. I’ve never hosted a keg party.

I don’t wind-surf. I can’t cook. I’ve never been to med school, law school, or clown college.

I’ve never been in a fist fight. I can’t play the harmonica or understand the sonar signals with which whales communicate. I don’t search for exotic monkeys in the Indonesian archipelago. I don’t dress up for Halloween.

I have no tattoos. I’ve never given birth or dropped acid. I’ve never taken a vow of silence,

of poverty, or of marriage. I’ve never walked in a picket line. I have yet to go green. I’ve never seen a Bollywood film, a porno or a praying mantis.

I’m a pansy. I use my sleeve to open the door of a public restroom. I don’t drive if it’s snowing and I don’t shower if it’s lightning.

I tell anti-Americans that I’m Canadian. I’m afraid of change. I feel guilty returning things to a store. I don’t slide into home plate. I shy away from confrontation.

I stink at a lot of things. I’m clumsy. I stammer. I can’t hold my liquor. I’ve never kept a New Year’s resolution. I’m not stylish. I can’t do a pull-up. I can’t parallel park.

I’m not graceful. I’m not photogenic. I’m not articulate. I have no idea what goes on at the Pentagon. I don’t understand 0% financing.

I can’t find Cyprus on a map. I can’t do the butterfly stroke. I can’t jump on a trampoline without having to pee. I have six overdue library books and two unpaid parking tickets.

I’m claustrophobic. I’m broke. Men can’t tell when I’m flirting. I bite my nails. I almost always push when you’re supposed to pull.

I get the giggles in church. I’m indecisive.

I’m insecure. I don’t wear sunscreen or my retainer. I have no idea what’s happening in Libya. I’m gullible.

But I’m honest. When my heart’s no longer in a relationship with a man, I give him the real reason why. I have a ton of flaws, but I am honest as hell.

And if I’m ever again with a Cape May guy who doesn’t appreciate that, then maybe it’s not me, after all. It’s you.

What is the Difference Between Void Contract & Voidable Contract?
