The Police Blotter
Buenos aires, argentina: An unidentified man pushed his wife out of an eighthfloor window, but his plan to kill her failed when she became entangled in power cables. Seeing she was still alive, the man jumped and tried to land on top of her. He missed.
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past A man in love is incomplete until he is married. Then he’s finished. Zsa Zsa Gabor I love being married. It’s so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life. Rita Rudner Spouse: someone who’ll stand by you through all the trouble you wouldn’t have had if you’d stayed single. Author Unknown After all, there is something about a weddinggown prettier than in any other gown in the world. Douglas William Jerrold Marriage is nature’s way of keeping us from fighting with strangers. Alan King To keep your marriage brimming, with love in the wedding cup, whenever you’re wrong, admit it; whenever you’re right, shut up. Ogden Nash
in 1940, the United States passed the Harbor Defense Program, which called for the installation of 150 armament batteries along the coast, to protect against a naval attack or invasion. Cape May was an important strategic location for artillery and in 1941, work commenced on Battery Dunn, also known as Battery 223. Federal officials chose to position it along the coast between Cape May and the Point to give its guns the ability to defend the Cape and help secure the Delaware Bay. Ben Miller

Weird Word Of The Week
Cassone is a large Italian chest or coffer, and was the most important piece of furniture in the late Middle Ages. Richly carved, giltcovered and often decorated with paintings, it was made to hold the trousseau of a bride and was given as a present from her parents.

Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. Random Fact Of The Week
FOR ancient Greeks and Romans, the wedding bouquet was a mix of garlic and herbs. The garlic was to ward off evil spirits and the herbs were to insure a fruitful union. In ancient Poland, sugar was sprinkled on the bride’s bouquet to keep her temper sweet.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “ A woman who seeks to be equal with men lacks ambition.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a Maki platter. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
T
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
HE birds are chirping and the weather’s warming, so we must be on our way to another summer season in Cape May. Oh, and let’s not forget that other reliable harbinger of our busiest season: another construction nightmare perfectly timed to coincide with the first real influx of visitors. We’re talking about the streets around town that have recently been closed, which include portions of Broadway, Grant, Mount Vernon, Congress and Claghorne. If those orange traffic cones are enough to confuse the locals, imagine the difficulty tourists will have navigating the snarl of one-way streets and sudden detours in the heart of town. A property owner on Grant Street spoke with us about his frustration, but wouldn’t go on the record for fear of a vindictive response from the city. “My rentals are down 20% this year,” he said. “It’s the same problem we had last year at another property when they were doing construction on Maryland Avenue. They told me they had notified us by posting it in the newspaper, but I want to know what paper, because I haven’t seen it.” [That paper would be the Cape May Star & Wave.] Paul Kates of Mott Associates, the engineering firm for the project, told us that the city originally required the construction be completed by April 16, but the crew was granted an extension due to unforseen renovations (we heard that an undergound bridge had been unearthed – which actually sounds quite cool) and the wetness of the ground (what – the ground isn’t usually wet in April?). They are hoping to have construction completed by Memorial Day (that would be nice) and finish the pav-
safer in a supernatural sense). Happy h(a) unting! WHILE we were sorry to hear that The Southern Mansion would no longer host the seventh annual Designer Show House, we’re pleased report that the folks at the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities have found a very posh replacement. This year’s show house will be a fourstory luxury home at Osprey Landing on Cape May Harbor. Some of the best vendors and designers in the area will lend their services to enhance this already state-of-the-art dwelling, which features three porches, a gas fireplace, a fourth floor master bedroom suite, deep-water docking and a private elevator. We’re not exactly sure just what the team can add to what already sounds like a palatial spot, but they’ve consistently impressed us in the past. The seventh annual Designer Show House will be open for self-guided tours starting June 17, and tours can be paired with happy hour and lunch specials at local eateries. So make a visit, be inspired by a beautiful piece of waterfront real estate and talk over your own renovation plans over a drink later. A BRIEF correction: In our April 27 issue, we mistakenly listed Townbank Fire Hall as the venue for Sharon Musson’s birthday party, when in fact the celebration took place at the Cape May VFW. The veterans went to a lot of effort to throw a great party, and Sharon wants to make sure they get the recognition they deserve. finally... RIP the Beach Theater. We will be addressing the subject in future issue – there isn’t the space right now to do the subject justice.
ing by early June (June?!), but “hope” is a less-than-promising word, and for business owners and landlords on the streets in question, it won’t recoup their losses. It doesn’t say much for the city planners that these problems seem to have become an annual event. Also, when we called the city to ask for comment, we were referred to the engineer, which is a pretty shocking example of passing the buck – man up! SPEAKING of ill omens, this Friday falls on the 13, promising all sorts of unearthly events. If you’d like a spiritual guide during this most inauspicious of dates, make sure you meet up with psychic medium and Ghost Writer Craig McManus. This weekend he’ll be hosting several events sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities, including a Dinner with the Ghost Writer on Friday at the Carriage House Tearoom & Café and a trolley ride with the Ghost Writer the same evening. If you prefer to stay inside with a fourleaf clover on the 13th, consider a walk with the Ghost Writer on Saturday night, which promises to be just as chilling (but likely

Going Local With Food And Wine At Hawk Haven
I
Hawk Haven Winery and Vineyard team up with Congress Hall’s Chef Lucas Manteca
n this world of drive-through restaurants and microwavable meals, it’s easy to forget how much joy can be found in eating. Always on the go, busy with kids and work and errands, we feel guilty spending time on preparing and, especially, on savoring real food. According to some members of the Cape May community, it’s time to bring back the joy. On Saturday May 21, the folks at Hawk Haven are teaming up with Chef Lucas Manteca of Congress Hall for “The Table,” a food and wine experience. Beginning at 3pm, Argentinean-born Manteca will cook over an open fire pit for approximately 100 guests, all of whom who will dine at a communal table snaking through the beautiful vineyard. Of course, before you sign up for a ticket to The Table, you’ll want to know what’s going to be on, well, the table. Manteca’s starter menu will include local oysters, steamed cherrystone clams, seafood ceviche and skewered beef anticucho. For dinner, Manteca will serve organic lamb, chicken, pork and fish with local corn and asparagus. Dessert will be berry cobbler and apple pie.
“Eating local isn’t important because it’s trendy,” Manteca said. “It’s important because it’s healthier, because it is a way to support the workforce of the community, and because it’s a more sustainable approach. This event will be about food at its most pure and most simple.” It will also, according to Hawk Haven owner Kenna Wuerker, be about the wine. “We’ve been trying to put this event together for nearly two years,” Wuerker said. “When people think about supporting local agriculture, they
often forget about the wine.” At the Table, guests will have an opportunity to taste all nine of the vineyard’s newest releases. Guests will also have the opportunity to mingle with local farmers, wine-makers, restaurant owners and chefs. Contributors to the event include Jah’s Creation, a community supported agriculture association, and Atlantic Capes Fisheries. Representatives from each organization will be present to answer questions about the slow food movement over a glass of Cabernet. Proceeds from the event will support the Free Meal Center of Cape May County, the goal of which is to provide anyone who walks through its doors with free lunch, Monday through Saturday, beginning Labor Day weekend. “We are no strings attached,” said founder Douglas Jewel, “no questions asked.” The Free Meal Center also supports local agriculture with weekly flea and farmers markets in Cape May Court House. Tickets to The Table are $99 dollars, and include wine, food, and gratuity. To reserve your seat and, most importantly, satisfy your appetite for real food, call Hawk Haven at 609-846-7347.

5/8: Cape May Artists’ Cooperative Support Community Food Bank
«
THREE cheers to the Cape May Artists’ Cooperative, who have joined together to support the Southern Branch of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey by creating and providing plenty of artwork for the annual Beach Ball, being held Tuesday, May 24 at the Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield. The Ball will feature a sampling of fine foods from area restaurants, silent and live auctions, and live entertainment. Tickets are $100, and proceeds benefit the FoodBank’s mission of fighting hunger and poverty on a local level. The Southern Branch serves Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and southern Burlington counties. Diane and Rich Flanegan, Mary Stewart, Lee Hadjuk, Anita Roth, Sue Lotozo PHOTOGRAPH BY Aleksey Moryakov... And the #1 Reason to Visit Rio StationName: Jimmy Murtha Workplace: Bartender at the Brown Room Age: 42 Hometown: I’m from Phoenixville, PA, and now live in North Cape May. How long have you worked here? Six-and-a-half years. Best thing about the job? A comfortable work environment, and it’s not a “Groundhog Day” kind of existence. Every day is different. What do you recommend here? Any special Chef Jeremy comes up with is outstanding, and I always recommend the scallops – they’re consistently excellent. As for drinks, mojitos are great. What’s your OTHER dream job? I have a horticulture degree, so I’d be running a nursery, ideally on an estate like the Biltmore. Of course, it would be nice to be rich and not work at all! Favorite thing about Cape May? Besides beaches? It’s nice and quiet in winter. The off-season doesn’t go by slow enough for me. Want to nominate an employee of the week? Email kate@exitzero.us.

Chance Meetings
Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies
I
t was a dark and stormy night. Seriously, really stormy. When Jessica and I met at the Harbor View, the rain was coming down sideways, lightning was blasting Cold Spring Inlet and low-lying islands were already underwater. We had a great seat, looking out the windows from the second floor. The Harbor View – for those who haven’t left the island in years – is on Ocean Drive, on the way to Wildwood Crest. The first floor bar is a popular spot for boaters, who can tie up outside and enjoy drinks on the deck. The upstairs restaurant is perfect for watching birds and harbor traffic. The food’s good, too. Jessica started with the mango mozzarella tomato appetizer, while I went with a spicy gumbo. I continued on to a generously-sized veal chop, and she had the sea bass. Portions were large, everything was flavorful. Jessica is interesting and attractive, and I hope we’ll get together again sometime, but she’s about to face the perfect storm: her teenage daughter’s prom. You remember the prom, that unnatural disaster that’s
the culmination of high school romance. Mine was a Molly Ringwald-ian nightmare: the rental store losing half my tux, my family scheduling my grandparent’s 50th anniversary party on the same night, the awful Salisbury steak that my vegetarian date wouldn’t eat, and her loud announcement in front of all my friends that she might be pregnant (which I was totally not involved with). And that was before the police got involved.
But Jessica is applying all her maternal skills to the event, beginning with a weekend of dress shopping. There’s also some concern (in this age of quickie “change my Facebook status to single” relationships) that her daughter and her date won’t even be together by prom night. And I’m sure that at some point Jessica and her daughter will be having “the talk.” So I’m doing what any man can reasonably be expected to do: staying as far as possible from the whole mess. Dresses: not my department. Teen dating advice: watch some John Hughes films. Talking about sex: every kid should learn the way I did, by reading Dad’s basement stash of Playboys. If you’d like to hear the gory details of my prom, join me for dinner. Send an email to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. I won’t wear a tux, but maybe I’ll bring a corsage.
Now Open Thursday through Sunday!

BEACH AVENUE & PERRY STREET, CAPE MAY (609) 884-7199
Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about weddings. This week’s winners are Diana and Robert Suer, 61 and 58, a retired homemaker and traffic analyst (respectively) from Cincinnati, Ohio. We found this lovely couple strolling along the Washington Street Mall. Here are their answers to our questions: How long have you been married? 38 years Where did you go for your honeymoon? Poconos, Pennsylvania. Who hogs most of the covers at night? Teddy the dog. Diana and Robert win a $50 gift certificate to Mary Ann’s Jewelry for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! Keep A Cop For The Kids
S
A guest editorial on Officer Tony Genaro, former Juvenile Officer for Cape May. By Sally Bingham
pring has finally come, but as we welcome this seasonal transformation, other changes remind me of a quote I once heard: “All change is not growth, as all movement is not forward.” Almost four years ago, my family left a home we loved to come to a place where schools still thought of kids as joyful and individual learners. In the process we discovered a community. There is the honk from a passing friend when we get the mail, the bus driver that checks up on our son when he’s not in school. There are the kind-hearted neighbors that helped find an escaped dog… the friend who fixed a f lood-soaked water heater. Neighbors, parents and teachers who have gone from strangers to friends. I look back at how it all unfolded and find that some of my earliest memories are of Officer Tony. We were new to the area and new to the school when we arrived for the annual school Halloween parade. There, enthusiastically greeting every child by name (even my own), was a man in a wig,
false teeth and a police uniform. After that, it seemed Officer Tony was everywhere we went — running Cub Scout meetings, organizing ceremonies in the park, selling pretzels at Octoberfest, handing out awards at school, working out at the gym, spinning records at a fundraiser. We didn’t feel so isolated because, hey, at least we know that guy. And incredibly he knew us — greeting us with a blinding smile and a sincere “How are you?” every time. We began to feel that we might just belong here and Officer Tony became part of our new lives. He even made it to my children’s bedtime ritual. My anxious son had the hardest time banishing fears and monsters at night. More than once, I found myself assuring him, “Don’t worry, Coop. Nothing bad is going to happen. Officer Tony is on duty and he protects us. He won’t let the monsters in.” And I believed it as much as my eight year old needed to. Officer Tony wore his uniform as easily as his smile. His professionalism came from within but was inextricably connected to his career. He commanded great respect and
that respect adhered to the uniform. As we celebrated, Tony celebrated with us. And he wasn’t just there for the fun times. I’ve seen him wade through some pretty intense situations and resolve them with quiet dignity for all involved. Teaching our kids about good choices was invaluable. Protecting them and setting a good example was heroic. Now I understand that Officer Tony will no longer be the Juvenile Officer and therefore no longer a fixture in my children’s school and their community. I do not pretend to understand nor mean to judge the decision made to end this vital role he played in our lives. I can’t help but think we are missing a creative solution to whatever problems are solved by the loss of Tony as the Juvenile Officer. I urge the community and our representatives to find a creative solution and get Officer Tony back as the dedicated officer to our most valuable resource — our children. I urge them to see that one child with a brighter future or a greater feeling of safety is worth fighting for.

The Old Fogey
t
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
hose royal scamps had SUCH a lovely honeymoon in Cape May last week. Of course there was little doubt that they would come here, given it was Princess Di’s favorite spot, and that late lamented People’s Princess had her very own honeymoon here back in the day. As did the current Queen Elizabeth and her boorish Greek paramour. Then there was Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, who stayed for a month after their nuptials and scandalized and delighted Cape May’s high society with their wild ways and voracious appetitites. Of course we hold the royal trust dear, and not a word leaks out to those paparazzi who chase the royals here and there on little motorbikes, snapping all sorts of unsavory shots. That’s not to say some of the more enterprising and ruthless photographers have not, in the past, found out the dates of our regal visitors, and have come here in disguise to ambush them. I have always taken the time to praise those chaps’ ingenuity and compliment them on their cun-
ning, as I take them on a late-night rowingboat trip out past The Point, the only noise being the gentle lapping of waves against the muslin-muffled oars, the gentle clink of heavy chains, and a stifled cry from inside a sack-cloth hood. So, the recent arrival of William and the delightful Kate was well planned, stealthily executed and known to very few. We had to take precautions, of course: William had to wear a hat at all times (that balding gene he inherited from his father is unfortunate and
easily recognizable) and had been coached in what was meant to be a passable New Jersey accent, but was so incomprehensible that it turned out to be the perfect match for a longtime resident of Wildwood. they of course stayed with me, in the seldom-used but splendid East Wing of the D’Catur Mansion. They flew in with minimal staff – a few dozen retainers, butlertypes, muscly be-suited security chaps and a brace of Royal Corgis for added protection. Albert usually detests other dogs, but something about the Corgis – their tiny legs, perhaps, or their impeccable manners – led them to get on like a house on fire. We toured all of the local high-spots: The Ebbitt Room, Martini Beach, The Brown Room, and by the time the royal couple left, some pounds heavier from saltwater taffy consumption, they were swearing to make our fine city their official summer residence, and build a new palace in town. Also, I am proud to report that judging by, um, late-night sounds, yet another future king/queen of England will be able to claim he/she was conceived in Cape May.

A High-Flying Music Festival Gala
T
The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities hosts an event with wine, food and fun.
he 22nd annual Cape May Music Festival is just a few short weeks away. In preparation for that three-week event the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities will host an anticipatory gala full of food, drink and prizes. The event will be held on Sunday, May 15 from 3 to 5pm at 645 Hughes Street. The Washington Inn will present a wine tasting that features f lights of Italian, French and Argentinean wine – they’ve aptly titled the international wine tasting “Come Fly with Us.” The Carriage House Café & Tearoom will cater hors d’oeuvres carefully paired to complement the wine. If the world-class drinks and fare aren’t enough to entice you, the gala is being held at a beautifully restored Cape May home, the Joseph Hall Cottage. Doug and Anna Marie McMain, owners of the Queen Victoria B&B, have generously offered to host the event at their residence. The cottage was the first home in Cape May to be painted in authentic Victorian colors and was rendered by painter Thomas Kincaid.
The gala will be held at the newly restored Joseph Hall Cottage. Throughout the afternoon, guests can bid on live and Chinese auction prizes, such as original art, gift certificates to local businesses and one-of-a-kind experiences including a channeling session with Cape May’s psychic medium and Ghost Writer, Craig McManus. Some of the
items up for bid include performances by Cape May Stage and East Lynne Theater Company, a “Girls Night Out Party” valued at $400 courtesy of Lace Silhouettes Lingerie, VIP passes to Morey’s Piers, lunch with Congressman Frank LoBiondo in Washington DC, and gift certificates to Cape May National Golf Club, Cape MayLewes Ferry, Summer Cottage Inn, Union Park Dining Room and the Washington Inn. There will also be gift baskets and certificates from many of Cape May’s fine restaurants and shops, tickets to sporting events and cultural attractions, artwork and hand-crafted gifts from local galleries and artists, and more. Admission to the Cape May Music Festival Gala is $50 per person. For tickets, call the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities at 609-884-5404. Proceeds help support MAC’s f lagship cultural offering, the Cape May Music Festival, which brings world-class orchestral and chamber music performances, and a popular world traditions series to the city every spring.

Customer Service
W
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
orking in the customer service industry requires that I be perky and upbeat and, for the most part, I can handle that. I don’t mind being irrationally excited about local produce or the fact that our piano player knows your favorite song. It’s my job to be happy all the time, I get that. Tom Hanks will tell you there’s no crying in baseball; any server will tell you there’s no crying in the dining room. But on days where everything’s gone wrong, my hair’s gone f lat, and my attitude’s gone sour, I don’t feel like plastering on my perky face and chatting about grassfed chicken. I do feel like stealing a bottle of Jose Cuervo from the bar and hiding from the world in the walk-in refrigerator. Like many people who don’t want to be fired, I can hold it together even when I feel like bawling into my polyester-blend uniform sleeve. At least, that is, I can hold it together until someone asks me how I am. Unfortunately, this is a common query in the dining room, where polite patrons
at every table will preface an evening with “How are you?” After all, it’s what you’re supposed to ask when meeting a stranger. And since I meet 30 new strangers a night, I field that question quite a bit. I know it’s a rhetorical question; what my customers really want to know about are the specials, not the tribulations of their server’s life. So I smile and lie. “Great!” I say, before moving on to fish and filet. I’m great. Always great. Night after night. Table after table. Great. I wonder sometimes what would happen if I told the truth. The friendly customer on table two says, “How are you?” And I picture myself saying, “Broke, bitter,
Best of luck to all in the 28th World Series of Birding! Chattel House Village • 109 Sunset Blvd. West Cape May, NJ 08204 (609) 898-8871 • www.birdhouseofcapemay.com
and sexually frustrated. More wine?” In reality, of course, I only smile and say: “Great!” And then I ask my customers the same question. They tell me that they, too, are great. Then we nod in mutual appreciation for one another’s greatness. It doesn’t matter that waiting tables was supposed to be a one-summer gig when I was 16. Nor does it matter that the couple on table two breaks up between dinner and dessert every time they’re here. It doesn’t matter that I recently backed my car into a new BMW, or that the guy on table seven can barely eat anything because he’s allergic to everything. The dining room is the great equalizer. Here, no matter the circumstances, everyone is great. And maybe there’s more to this than I acknowledge; social formalities can be civil and pleasant. Or maybe not. Maybe we should stop with all this “How are you?” business unless we genuinely want to know. Ironically, not having to answer that question anymore would actually make me feel pretty, well, great. Until then, it’s my dining room, and I’ll cry if I want to.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I’m getting married in couple of months – small ceremony on the beach, reception at the Peter Shields Inn, no bridesmaids, just my only sister as maid of honor. She was VERY caught up in the recent royal nuptials, and has now announced that she will wear a white bridesmaid’s dress! Unfortunately for me, I told her she could wear whatever she wants, but obviously I don’t want her in white – I think we’ll look ridiculous. What now? – Bummed Bride Dear Bummed This is a quandary that the Answer Lady suspects will be faced by brides far and wide for the next year or so. At least your sister isn’t insisting that Prince Harry walk with her; on the other hand, who could blame her for that? He is so adorable. But the Answer Lady digresses. You won’t be
Wise answers to perplexing questions
a “bridezilla” if you simply tell your sister that you love her, you’re thrilled she’ll be a part of your nuptials, but that you must put your foot down about her wearing white. Surely with all of the other colors under the sun, she can make a second choice. Or you could really take the gloves off and just tell her she looks hideous in white. That should take care of it. Dear Answer Lady I am in trouble with my wife and don’t know why. She is upset I didn’t get her a
Mother’s Day gift last week. But we don’t have any children – we just got married a couple of months ago! I don’t mean to sound obnoxious about it, but she’s not my mom! Did I screw up here? – Confused Groom Dear Confused The Answer Lady has a friend who was livid with her boyfriend of two months for the same thing. The difference there is that while she was not the mother of his children, she does have a child of her own. If one has a girlfriend or a wife – or a sister or a friend, for that matter – who happens to be a mom, acknowledging that person on Mother’s Day is a civilized thing to do. The Answer Lady is assuming your wife doesn’t have children from a prior marriage, which leads us to the conclusion that either this is her bizarre way of telling you she is pregnant, or she expects that since you are now married, you will be gifting her with something for every possible occasion on the calendar. Start saving now – Memorial Day is right around the corner! Congratulations on your marriage, and get used to being in trouble without knowing why.

Two-year member of the Lower Cape May Regional track team and this year’s captain, Alessa Antinori, 17, from Cape May, is the daughter of Charles Antinori and Christine Rothwell, and sister of Cole Rothwell and Chaz Antinori. She has had an outstanding season so far, with four personal record-breaking performances against rival Middle Township. Antinori ran the 400 hurdles in 1:22.7, the 800 meter in 2:58.7, the 2 mile in 15:59.1, as well as getting 6’6” in the pole vault. Antinori started running track two years ago, and has been a strong participant ever since. She originally joined to stay in shape for her field hockey game, but ended up having so much success in track that she stuck with it. Antinori says the hardest part of track is “all the running,” but that she keeps in shape by eating healthy and doing On Demand workouts. Antinori plans to attend William Paterson University in the fall to play field hockey. We’ll be looking for her to continue her successful track season as she gets ready for next fall. Activity Of The Week

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: World War II Lookout Tower
eople come to Cape May to forget that the world is a scary place. Gaze at the sparkling waves for a few hours and it’s hard to imagine that the sea can bring anything other than friendly dolphins and tasty shellfish. Members of the Greatest Generation remember when the sea also brought the threat of battleships, and soldiers came to town to face that threat. Imagine the impact World War II had on Cape May. Blackout restrictions extended miles inland, so you couldn’t open your shades to the sea breeze. You couldn’t take pictures or use binoculars at the beach. You couldn’t fish near a bridge. Gasoline rationing restricted tourism. Merchant ships were sunk offshore by German submarines. Volunteers searched the skies for enemy airplanes. In response to the threat of attack from German battleships, the United States built Fort Miles, a defense system which included 15 lookout towers to protect the Delaware Bay. Soldiers in the towers scanned the seas and calculated the coordinates to fire upon enemy ships. You can visit Control Tower
#23, recently restored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities, on Sunset Boulevard. The Lookout Tower offers a great view of Cape May Point and the rest of Cape May. Bring binoculars to focus on the concrete ship for an idea of the view spotters had of ships attempting to enter the bay. Built in June 1942 of concrete poured into a sliding tube-shaped form, the Lookout

Tower took just two-and-a-half days to create. Certainly, anyone interested in construction can spend that long just walking around the narrow tower, marveling at the way it was made. The Lookout Tower is open to the public for a modest admission charge. Check the calendar in This Week in Cape May for times. Tickets are available on site, or at the booth on the Washington Street Mall. Consider a combination package – the nearby lighthouse makes a good pairing, and is a nice place for a picnic lunch. And if you are in Cape May on May 21, celebrate Armed Forces Day with Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower, a group dedicated to explaining Cape May’s role in World War II and promoting the values of the era. The group will honor World War II veterans and their families with tales of civilian life, re-enactors, and recorded music of the time. For more information, call 609884-5404. Visit the Lookout Tower and salute Cape May’s Greatest Generation. Next week: Spring Sidewalk Sale on the Washington Street Mall

Tiki is a cute one-year-old boy who has had a tough life so far. He came to us covered with bite wounds which have since healed. While Tiki has lots of nervous energy, he’s very submissive and wants so much to please everyone he meets. He needs someone who will dedicate their time to him and give him the exercise and training he will need to thrive. If you can give Tiki a loving home, meet him today. Adoption fee is $95.
«
Foxxy is a sweet yet reserved female Shepherd mix who will need a quiet, adult home. She was an outside dog so she will need some training but with lots of love we think she will come around. She showed no interest in toys or rawhides and did well on her temperament test. All she needs now is a second chance to have her own home and an owner who will give her the affection and attention she deserves. Adoption fee is $35.
«
Oscar is a really cute one-year-old boy who is very exuberant and playful. He knows basic commands but will need some training as well as plenty of exercise to help him burn his energy. He really enjoys playing with his toys so if you like to be outside Oscar may be the one for you. If you’re able to, stop by and check him out. You can spend some time with him to see if he would be a good match. Adoption fee is $95.

Kismet was brought to the shelter in March and is still getting adjusted here. She belongs in a home where she can go indoors and outdoors. She’s still very shy, but slowly warming up to people. With a little time, and love, she could be the perfect cat! Come on by the shelter and see if she’s the right cat for you. Adoption fee is $70.

Joey is in need of a home. He came in as a kitten with his sister. She was adopted a long time ago, but he’s still waiting for an owner. He was very shy at first, but since then he’s really come around! He may be a little slow to warm up to you, but when he does, he’s a very good boy. Come by the shelter and meet him! Adoption fee is $35.

Teddy came to the shelter with his three sisters. His owners had to move, and they weren’t allowed to bring the cats to their new home. He’s a very loving and affectionate cat, and he loves attention. There is nothing he likes more than being pet. Give him a second chance and stop by the shelter to take a look! Adoption fee is $20.

The Season Is Finally Upon Us advertisinG feature

fter months of planning and countless hours of meetings, the 23rd season of Cape May Stage launches this week. Dr. Ron Goldstein exclaims, “I can’t wait for Cape May Stage to get up and running – that makes the town really come alive.” Thanks to the Queen Victoria Bed & Breakfast (the show sponsor), Say Goodnight, Gracie returns with Joel Rooks playing George Burns. This production played in 2009 and 30 people were turned away every night hoping to get tickets. Even Linda Steenrod who was on the City Council missed it last time. This year, she joined the Board of Cape May Stage and already has her ticket. We listened to the clamor of people asking us to bring back their favorite show and listened to your requests for matinee performances, too. Before Memorial Day, there will be matinees at 3pm on Saturday and Sunday. Opening week means there is a gala opening-night party on Thursday, May 12. These opening nights are always great fun with special electricity running through the audience. Joel Rooks will be at the party as well as the Cape May Stage staff and Board of Trustees. Come join us for a night of great food and drink at Harry’s Ocean Bar & Grille at the Montreal Inn. Bird Droppings
T
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
his is an article about the “brown backs.” Northern Rough-winged Swallow and Bank Swallow. What’s the difference (beside one having a long name and one a short name)? Ah, that is the very crux of this article. How clever of you to have ascertained this on so few clues. Actually, I’m lying just a little bit. The focus of this article is less brown vs brown than then vs now. You see, had I been writing this piece say, 30 years ago, it would be a much different article. When I first started birding, I learned that there were these two “brown-backed” swallows. All the other swallows were colorful. Two were brown. I was told that the way to tell them apart was to look at the underparts. Northern Rough-winged Swallow had a dirty throat. Bank Swallow had a bold, black band across the breast. Yes. Very different. Providing you got to see the undersides. Problem was, most of the time all you saw was the back of the bird
going away from you. I saw lots of brown-backed swallows. I managed to identify about half. My point? Simple. The birds are so dissimilar in shape, f light, even color that they were perfectly identifiable all the time. It was my preconception, the one that made me look at the breast, that was f lawed. Take Rough-winged Swallow. They are

compact, almost pudgy. The brown is fairly uniform and dull. The white on the underparts is also dull; not bright white. Take Bank Swallow. Slender, lithe, almost like a shorter-tailed Barn Swallow. The back is glossy brown (with a rump that seems somewhat silvery). The underparts are bright white – gleaming white. The two birds really don’t have a great deal in common. Except they are brown above and all the other swallows are not. Does my point stop here? No it does not. This brown vs brown is only the point of departure. You see the problem with bird identification has been that for far too long we’ve been focused (make that fixated) on plumage. We were told to look at this detail to distinguish this bird from that. We ended up overlooking a lot of very salient clues. Like shape and manner of f light. Shape affects movement. The Northern Rough-winged Swallow has a fairly slow,

Bird Droppings ? From Page 89 f luttery f light. Well, slow and f luttery for a swallow. The very stream-lined Bank Swallow is a veritable aerial gymnast. It darts, weaves and turns with tight-corner finesse. It makes Northern Rough-winged Swallow look all tuckered out. So 30 years ago, when I first started to teach bird identification, I used to tell people to look at the underparts of brownbacked swallows. Dirty throat vs band across the chest. Now I say, brown and compact or brown and sleek. Does it remind you of a Cliff Swallow or does it remind you of a Barn Swallow? Which brings up another matter. Yep. Northern Rough-winged Swallow and Cliff Swallow are much more similar in shape than Northern Rough-winged Swallow and Bank Swallow. Be careful. If the Bank Swallow you have has a real dark throat, white forehead and pale rump, it’s not. One solutions begets new problems. Eh. It’s what keeps birding interesting. The Movie Column
Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, previews upcoming summer films
A
few nice days of spring, and wham, we’re all thinking of summer, right? And what would summer be without some great summer flicks to get us into air-conditioned theaters, away from rainy summer days (okay, so it doesn’t rain that much in Cape May County — still there’s a shower or two!). So what’s on Hollywood’s summer horizon? Plenty! But if you’re watching television or seeing the ads for summer films, you’re getting a slanted view of god-like superheroes and overplayed pirates. Why does Hollywood pick one or two big films and shove them in our faces — leaving perfectly great movies off their hit list for big advertising bucks? I can’t say, but sometimes it’s better to troll around searching for those rare gems that have to be stumbled upon rather letting the blockbusters hit us over our head. Or is that “our heads?” Our collective heads? You know what I mean. When I was a kid, Marvel Comics were the comic book of choice (versus “your dad’s comic book,” DC). Now it would appear the Marvel is Hollywood’s choice as well. Seems

Marvel also has Conan the Barbarian coming out this year (you might remember that Arnold Schwarzenegger played the muscle-

bound hero in 1982). And as if the last two installments in the Pirates of the Caribbean series didn’t flop enough, we’re being sold another episode in theaters this summer. So what’s out there that looks just a little more inspired than this offering? City of Life and Death tells the story of the Nanking Massacre in 1930s Japan and China, and while it might run a little long it’s getting rave reviews. Cave of Forgotten Dreams is a 3D documentary from IFC Films that is getting some strong reviews as it takes a look at early cave illustrations in a dynamic new way. And 13 Assassins, featuring a group of Japanese mercenaries hired to take down a would-be leader, is also garnering a good critical response. Of course, you can always wait a while and see what films are being created right here in Cape May at the Cape May Film Society’s Young Filmmakers Camp, June 27-July 1. If you have a child interested in storytelling, filming, editing or acting, they can do it all at the film camp. If you’ve seen any of the movies mentioned in this preview, email your reaction to capemayfilm@ hotmail.com. We may include your comments in an upcoming review!

The Dating Column
l
Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island
ast Sunday, I competed in the annual Broad Street Run. I had heard that the course would be scenic, but I had no idea just how scenic. Waiting for the gun to go off, I was surrounded by 15,000 men – guys of every size, shape and demeanor. It was a view that rivaled that from any Beach Avenue bench. As I stood there taking in the scenery, a thought interrupted my musing. Dating a man is a great deal like running a ten-mile race. At the start, you feel nervous and excited and anxious to get going. You’re convinced that you can make this work and that you’re doing something special. Your head is telling you to slow down, but you ignore it. This could be your personal best, and you’re as ready as you’re ever going to be. Halfway through the adrenaline wears off and you fall into your stride. It may even become a little monotonous. This is no longer all that fun, but you’re prepared for that; you didn’t sign up expecting passion to carry you through. Besides, you’re in it now, so you might as well keep going. Toward the end, there’s usually some pain.
You have trouble remembering what drew you to this in the first place. You worry that you moved a little too quickly at the beginning. You consider taking a break, but you can’t decide whether that would be smart or cowardly. You’re exhausted and angry with yourself for being so exhausted. As soon as it’s over, you swear that you’ll never do this again, no one in her right mind ever would. You’re too tired to fight anymore. And you kind of want to vomit.
But after you’ve had just a little time to recover, it becomes difficult to remember anything but the good stuff, like that nervous excitement you felt at the beginning or the sense of pride you now feel for making it to the other side alive. You’re no longer angry. If nothing else, you’ve learned a lot. Eventually, some time after you’ve caught your breath, a new man will approach you. You’ll know he’s interested because you’ll catch him smiling even though you’re a sweaty mess. He’ll ask for your number, and you’ll realize that he doesn’t mean the one printed on the bib across your shirt. You’ll smile. You’ll laugh. You’ll share a Gatorade under a time clock. Before you know it, you’re signing up all over again. You feel nervous and excited and anxious to get going. You’re convinced that you can make this work. And maybe it will work this time. Maybe you and this guy will still be together at the finish. Or maybe, like running, he’ll only be a temporary high. Either way, your head tells you to slow down, to pace yourself, but you ignore this, of course. You are, after all, as ready as you’re ever going to be.
