The Police Blotter
Ashland, Oregon – Police responded to a report of two dogs running loose and attacking ducks. The officer cited a resident for the loose dogs. The ducks refused medical treatment and left the area, according to police records.
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past “Life’s pretty good, and why wouldn’t it be? I’m a pirate, after all.” Johnny Depp “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.” Walt Disney “The average man will bristle if you say his father was dishonest, but he will brag a little if he discovers that his great-grandfather was a pirate.” Bern Williams “Where there is a sea, there are pirates.” Greek proverb “Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates.” Mark Twain “It is when pirates count their booty that they become mere thieves.” William Bolitho
it was just before 3am on May 10 when crew members from the USS Sutton first laid eyes on U-858. The U-boat was ordered to proceed to a rendezvous point just off the coast of Cape May. Once the submarine arrived at the location in the early morning of May 14, the US Navy formally accepted the U-858’s surrender and took possession of the ship. Most of the crew members were moved to an American ship and US sailors boarded the Nazi vessel to bring it back to Fort Miles in Lewes, DE. Ben Miller
Facebook Mystery Contest
Weird Word Of The Week
A corsair used similar swashbuckling methods to a pirate, but acted in the commission of a government or monarch in the capture of merchant ships belonging to an enemy nation. Because they were acting on behalf of the Crown, they were treated as prisoners of war if captured, instead of as pirates.

If you think you know what establishment you’re staring at, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a full-size, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. Random Fact Of The Week
Pirates believed that wearing pierced earrings would improve their eyesight. They also believed that having women on board their ship was bad luck, and that whistling on a ship would cause the weather to turn stormy, as in ‘to whistle up a storm.’
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “Excitement and intrigue follow you closely wherever you go!” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with chicken pad thai. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
M
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
OST of our readers likely know about the construction on and around Broadway. You might already have endured the frustration of trying to navigate your way through this gauntlet, the result of ill-timed construction which has been undertaken to put in new sewage pipes, situated 12 feet directly below Broadway. Those pipes are sunk below the water table, so, day and night, the construction crew has been pumping the surrounding water with a large pump that sounds a lot like a jackhammer. For the past week that pumped water has run down the curb along Grant until it reaches the drain at the low point of the street. The low point of the street happens to be where Exit Zero employees Dan Mathers and Jon Roth live. Each morning they must make a decision straight out of The Oregon Trail: how best to ford the river bordering their front lawn. The ground has become saturated, turning their front yard into a mushy mess. Dan’s grandmother, who will undergo knee-replacement surgery next month, had to gingerly walk across a body board as she crossed the flow, then soaked her shoes on her way across the yard. The Roth-Mathers house isn’t the only one impacted by the flooding. Their nextdoor neighbors have a driveway half covered in mud and silt, and we don’t suspect they will be too happy to park in a sludgy mess when they show up. The real problem? It’s not that the water is there – if it has to be done, it has to be done. The REAL problem is that no one was consulted or warned about this nuisance. The residents came home to find that someone had decided to build a
moat around their homes, and it’s been that way for more than a week. Paul Kates of Mott Associates, the company overseeing this project, promised to try directing the water elsewhere and claims the soupy-yard problem was caused by a plugged culvert. “Much of the water in the area is directed through a culvert [a really wide pipe], and we had to plug up that culvert during construction,” said Kates. When asked why he hadn’t told the residents about the overflow, he said that the street was mostly vacant this time of year. “We tried to warn everyone that we saw,” Kates said. Hmmm... the crew couldn’t have tried all that hard, since Dan’s wife was home most of the week. “It’s easier to ask forgiveness than permission” goes the old saying, but it’s probably not the best policy to pursue when it comes to managing a city. You’ll end up with a whole bunch of unhappy residents even if the engineer assigned to dealing with the angry phone calls is a total sweetheart. members of the EZ team attended the opening night of Cape May Stage’s Say Goodnight, Gracie, and the experience was
pretty magical. First, there were the stage effects created by Benjamin Loverin, the new stage manager at the theater. Loverin masterfully employed fog machines, artful lighting and a slew of audio-visual effects throughout the show, half-convincing us at various times that god or Gracie Allen were in the playhouse with us. The greatest credit goes to Joel Rooks, whose performance as George Burns is remarkable. From his gravelly smoker’s voice to his facial tics, this actor has captured the late, great comedian with great nuance. The play follows Burns’ life from his boyhood to his days in vaudeville, where he met his partner and future wife, Gracie Allen. The story grows increasingly poignant as their romance blooms. We left the theater with a warm feeling and the faint smell of cigar smoke, then headed to Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille for the after-party. We highly recommend the show – it will refresh old memories and just might teach you a thing or two. This Thursday, May 19 we are hosting our annual Cool Cape May book launch party. It will be at the store on Sunset, from 10-5, and hear this… everyone is invited – advertisers, readers, family members, paramours and so on – to partake of cheese from Seaside Cheese, wine from Hawk Haven Vineyard and food from Depot Market Café. Not a bad trifecta. Plus, if you advertised in the book, you get a free copy. The best part, though, is you get to rub shoulders with the geniuses who create this magazine, and the books, and the merchandise, and the…. You get the point. Come along and don’t worry… we won’t gossip if you start drinking wine at 11am.

Going Local With Food And Wine At Hawk Haven
I
Hawk Haven Winery and Vineyard team up with Cape Resorts Group’s Food Guru Lucas Manteca
n this world of drive-through restaurants and microwaveable meals, it’s easy to forget how much joy can be found in eating. According to some members of the Cape May community, it’s time to bring back that joy. On Saturday May 21, the folks at Hawk Haven are teaming up with Chef Lucas Manteca of Congress Hall for “The Table,” a food and wine experience. Beginning at 3pm, Manteca will cook over an open fire pit for approximately 100 guests, all of whom who will dine at a communal table in the vineyard. Before you sign up for a ticket to The Table, you may want to know what will be on that table. Appetizers include local oysters, steamed cherry-stone clams, seafood ceviche and skewered beef anticucho. For dinner, Manteca will serve organic lamb, chicken, pork and fish with local corn and asparagus. Dessert will be berry cobbler and apple pie. “Eating local isn’t important because it’s trendy,” Manteca said. “It’s important because it’s healthier, because it is a way to support the workforce of the community, and because it’s a more sustainable approach. This event will be
about food at its most pure and most simple.” It will also, according to Hawk Haven owner Kenna Wuerker, be about the wine. “When people think about supporting local agriculture, they often forget the wine,” says Wuerker. At the Table, guests can taste all nine of the vineyard’s newest releases. Guests will also have the opportunity to mingle with local farmers, wine-makers, restauranteurs and chefs. Contributors to the event include Jah’s Creation, a community
agriculture association, and Atlantic Capes Fisheries. Proceeds will support the Free Meal Center of Cape May County, which aims to provide a free lunch to anyone who walks through its doors. “We are no strings attached,” said founder Douglas Jewel, “no questions asked.” Tickets to The Table are $99 dollars, and include wine, food and gratuity. To reserve your seat and, most importantly, satisfy your appetite for real food, call Hawk Haven at 609-846-7347.

Name: Christy Igoe Workplace: Photo Lab Supervisor, CVS Age: My honest age?! Okay - I’m 64. Hometown: I’m originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, and I currently live in Tranquility, North Cape May. How long have you worked here? I’ve worked here for six years. Best thing about the job? That I get to do something I love every day. It’s such a nice feeling to simply love your job. What do you recommend here? People should know that even with all the changes and advances in technology, we can still meet all of their photography needs. What’s your OTHER dream job? Selling sandals on the beach in Hawaii. Or retirement, but I guess they’re kind of one and the same! Favorite thing about Cape May? The beauty of the architecture. When I first relocated to South Jersey, I lived in Seaville. But Cape May kept calling me further south. Interview by Kate Chadwick Want to nominate an employee of the week? Email kate@exitzero.us.

I
t was a big year for my Fantasy Five. (If you’re not familiar with that phrase, it refers to the five people your significant other would allow you to sleep with, free of emotional charge, no strings attached, if somehow the chance arose.) First, Anne Hathaway hosted the Oscars. Then Tina Fey won another Emmy, got pregnant (okay, the fact that I wasn’t involved was a bit disheartening), and hosted Saturday Night Live. Next, NBC newsbabe Natalie Morales got a big promotion on the Today Show. And while I’m still waiting for twice-cancelled actress Jaime Ray Newman to get a new show, and it seems unlikely that Jessica Rabbit will ditch Roger and stage a comeback, three of my five are blowing up. So what does it take to crack my Fantasy Five? What am I looking for in a dream woman? Brains and humor seem obvious. A certain twinkle in the eye doesn’t hurt. A way with words is a fine thing, too. There was a time when I had lofty standards. The bar was high, I was looking for a lot in a woman. But as the years
passed and I remained single, I lowered my standards. Eventually, I was simply looking for a woman who lived in my area code, and not with her parents. Even that was nearly impossible to find. What exactly is my type? That’s trying to eff the ineffable. Of course, I have an idea of what I’m seeking, but it’s blurry and out of focus. It seems like with every woman I meet, I try to fit her into that picture, to sharpen things up. It’s not as easy as saying,
“I like redheads,” or “I want to find a woman who shares my interests.” In fact, I think I’d prefer someone with her own interests that she’d like to share, someone who’ll challenge me a bit. Someone practical, pragmatic, and with a love of life’s less finer things. Of course, red hair wouldn’t hurt. Ultimately, I’m dreaming of a woman with Tina Fey’s wacky smarts, Natalie Morales’ grasp of current events, Jaime Ray Newman’s sass, Jessica Rabbit’s dulcet voice and Anne Hathaway’s vivaciousness. Maybe that’s a fantasy, but that’s what dreaming is all about, isn’t it? In reality, though, I want someone who knows me as I am, understands where I’ve been, accepts who I’ve become, and still, in spite of it all, gently invites me to grow. Who’s in your Fantasy Five? Tell me over dinner. Send an e-mail to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. It’s good to have a healthy fantasy life.
Now Open Thursday through Sunday!

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about pirates. This week’s winner is Jessica Frankel, 32, a recruiter from Haddon Township, New Jersey. We found Jessica (pictured on the left) strolling along the Washington Street Mall with her family. Here are her answers to our piercing questions: Name a famous pirate. Jack Sparrow. Why do pirates say ‘Arrggh?’ Because their favorite socks are argyle! Would you rather have a peg leg or a peg arm? Peg arm. Jessica wins a $50 gift certificate to The Original Fudge Kitchen for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY DANIELLE O’NEAL

Cape May Forum’s Big Night
T
Winery tours, wine tastings, art auctions and great music – don’t miss the Big Night!
he Cape May Forum – Chautauqua at the Shore extends an invitation to the Cape May County community and its visitors for a special evening celebrating the launch of its 2011 program. Cape May Forum’s Big Night will be held at the Cape May Winery, 711 Town Bank Road, on Saturday, June 4 at 7pm. Tickets are now on sale by phone and on the CMF web site. All proceeds from this evening benefit the fall program, “Guess What’s Coming for Dinner? - The Politics of Food in the 21st Century.” The June 4 rundown of activities will guarantee you a big night in a special setting. You can tour the Cape May Winery, one of the area’s top tourist attractions. Guests will have the opportunity to explore the winery with Toby Craig, proprietor, on one of two tours that evening. Visitors can also sample the wine bar. The vineyard has grown over the past two decades to produce some of South Jersey’s most distinguished wines. Blended wines, both dry and sweet, really hit the
mark, and are a specialty there. Guests will also enjoy a delicious variety of hors d’oeuvres as only the Washington Inn can serve them. There will also be an art auction at the event. Did you know the Cape May Forum has been running a New Jersey-wide poster competition? The winner of the contest
Ocean View
will be unveiled on the Big Night, and all juried work will be on sale at live and silent auctions. The live auction will be hosted by Jack Wright, Exit Zero Editor/Publisher. A limited-edition Politics of Food Art Poster will be the Cape May Forum’s gift to you. As if all this weren’t enough, you can dance to the sounds of the Bob Campanell Band on the winery’s newly opened terrace and fire pit, overlooking the vineyards. Cape May Forum – Chautauqua at the Shore (CMF) is a non-profit organization founded in 2009 as a consortium of the region’s organizations and individuals. The Old Fogey
A
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
h, I remember the days of the Cape May Land Pirates with such fondness. We had tired of the adventures the high sea offered, me and my merry band of cutthroat lads and lasses, having looted every port for a hundred miles, sunk every ship we met and sent a thousand mateys to Davey Jones’ locker with blade, cutlass and cannon. Plus, all that salt water was giving me an awful rash on my hands – really, it was agony and looked terrible. So, I came up with the bold plan to transfer business to the land, where we could fall upon an unsuspecting public, not get wet or seasick, and ideally be able to hove to at the occasional café for a hot snack and to wash the blood off in the restroom (I was sick of the paper towel expenses we incurred at sea – have you ever tried to get blood off using only dry paper? This was before Wet Wipes, you understand). So we hauled our trusty ship, the “You’ll Be Laughing On The Other Side Of Your Face In A Minute,” ashore late one night,
into a specially constructed warehouse near The Point, added wheels and angled canon ports down a little. That morning, there was a fine easterly and we picked up speed along Sunset, sails a-billowing. We cut left onto Bayshore, where we surprised some camping shoebies with a broadside, and a boarding party scampered down ropes and jumped on little bicycles to gather loot. We took a right on Stimpson Lane, but found the dwellings there to be rude shacks, which we set alight
as a favor to the city. We had just enough wind in the sails to tack down Broadway, flattening a constabulary car that attempted to pull us over for running a red light that was clearly yellow, then left onto Beach, where the fun began. We raked every hotel along the stretch, even dropping anchor outside Congress Hall to pillage and have a cocktail at the Brown Room. By the time we passed Reading Avenue, the cannons were red hot from firing, the holds crammed with souvenirs, wallets, rare statues, gold, silver, trinkets and saltwater taffy. Some score of hapless shoebies had walked the plank (sustaining nasty roadrashes) and as we passed Pittsburgh Avenue, I commanded: “turn us about, mateys, we’re off to Wildwood!” Rather than a new course, I was met by a blank silence, none of these water-rats having thought to add a steering wheel. We coasted off the end of Beach at close to 100 knots. And there to this day lies the “You’ll Be Laughing” in 30 fathoms, with a treasure fit for a king. On calm days, they say, you can see taffy floating to the surface…
Definitely not just your grandmother’s tearoom! Sure, you’ll find tasty tea sandwiches, freshly-baked scones and teabreads served with clotted cream, and that traditional, elegant service that you associate with fine dining. But there is so much more to The Carriage House. In addition to our traditional Tea Luncheon and Afternoon Tea, The Carriage House offers hearty fare from the café menu, plus homemade soups, and hearty wholesome entrée salads that fill you up while still letting you feel virtuous for eating a salad.
So try it today, and bring grandmom along, too…. She’ll love you for it!

I
The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
’m tougher than I look. I’ve eaten a fried cockroach, the balls of a bull and the airplane food on a Malaysia Air f light. A lousy tip won’t break me. I’ve lived in north Philly and just outside of Compton. A bad attitude won’t scare me. I once took a full-grown tiger for a walk around the temple of a Buddhist monk. I rode the head of an elephant with a f lesheating disease through a contaminated river in Asia. I let a black bear eat milk tablets from my hand. I’m prepared for animals in the dining room. I’ve dated liars, cheaters, and sociopaths. I can handle you. I’ve spent 12 hours scaling a glacier in New Zealand with nothing but a granola bar and an ice pick. I’ve spent seven days at sea during hurricane swell. I’ve spent ten days living in a fraternity house with seventeen boys. I can survive food service. Don’t let my smile fool you. Don’t be duped by my ironed blouse. I’m tougher than I look.
I’ve gone scuba diving through the Great Barrier Reef with a broken mask. I’ve rafted through class-five rapids with a broken paddle. I’ve boarded through Swiss mountains with a broken binding. I don’t care that your napkin is dirty. I’ve jumped from the second-highest bungee in the world, and out of an airplane at 15,000 feet. I’ve jumped from a cliff into 45 degree water. What makes you think I’ll let you jump all over me? I once let a 400-pound bartender dig the spine of a sea urchin from my foot with nothing but a needle and a shot of Bacardi 151. I’m not as timid as I seem. And I’m not as polite as you think.
Welcome Birders!

I once danced on a Vegas bar in fourinch stilettos after five shots of Tequila without falling over. I won’t crumble in front of you. I once spent an entire afternoon in the dark of a glowworm cave. I’ve been through worse than you. I’ve surfed eleven-foot waves over four feet of water and a bed of fire coral. You don’t really want to mess with me. I’m tougher than you think. You may want to keep that in mind the next time you decide to pluck a hair from your own head, place it on the rim of your plate, and then scream “I demand compensation!” across the dining room. I’m on to you. And I’m tougher than you think. Do you expect me to apologize, to tell you that I’m sorry? Because that’s not going to happen. But I do have two other words for you. Two words, sir, for you to keep in mind the next time you feel like pulling such nonsense on my turf, in my dining room, again. Bring it.

Mermaids From Antiques Emporia
Wooden Pirates From Antiques Emporia
Perhaps the only danger a pirate fears – the fatal call of those sirens of the sea. Check out these beauties from Antiques Emporia; pictured here are two of a large selection of mermaids of all types and in various mediums - hanging and sitting figures, prints and much, much more. The large mermaid cost $39.99, the smaller is $29.99. 405 West Perry Street, 609-898-3332.
Sometimes a little pirate goes a long way, and these dashing figures are the perfect case in point. Standing about eight inches tall, they are charmingly carved and painted, and just the thing to brighten up a little corner of any room in your home. And arrgh – they’re a steal at just $6 each! This will keep your little scallywags busy – and your big ones, too. The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady I am a single woman in my 30s, and I’m sick and tired of getting my heart broken. I admit I have a tendency to go for bad boys, but that can’t be the only problem, can it? I want to settle down and have a family someday – do I need to move out of Cape May? – Good Girl, Bad Boys Dear Good The Answer Lady thinks it’s safe to say that most women go through a badboy phase at some point in their lives. It appears, however, that you have not yet outgrown yours. Yes, it’s captivating to think about being taken prisoner by Captain Jack Sparrow, swept off one’s feet by his swashbuckling ways and his devastating charm and that fiendish twinkle in his eyeliner-rimmed peepers. But the Answer Lady digresses. What were we talking
Wise answers to perplexing questions
about, dear? Oh, yes, consorting with pirates. While fun in the short-term, at the end of the day it boils down to living on an unsteady vessel with someone who, while easy on the eyes, has no real plan in life, hangs out with unsavory criminal types, and is perpetually running from someone or something – hardly “settling down” material. The Answer Lady also feels compelled to point out that when one fixates on a “type,” one limits oneself unnecessarily. Don’t just check out the leather jackets the
next time you are out and about; check out the suit jackets and windbreakers too. You never know what will happen when you broaden your horizons. Dear Answer Lady My neighbors have a new boat and took my husband and me out for a spin. We pulled right up to the Harbor View for drinks after that – what a great afternoon! I’m officially hooked now, and have been trying to talk my husband into buying a boat ever since, but all he cares about is paying bills and putting money into our savings account. I realize all that stuff is important, but life is short, right? – Sailor Girl Dear Sailor Yes, indeed, life is short, which is why the Answer Lady wouldn’t want to spend it living in her new boat, parked outside of what used to be her house. One of the great joys of living by the sea is the opportunity to cruise about in a boat, and another is the Harbor View for happy hour. But for now, get a hold of yourself, enjoy your neighbors’ hospitality and let your husband continue to keep a roof over your head.

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: pirates. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. Across 1. Pirates always seems to lose a limb below the knee. When that happens, they get one of these wooden replacements. 4. This is a euphemism for the bottom of the ocean, or where a certain Monkees band member keeps his gym clothes. 6. Now we know him for the brand of rum that bears his name. 17. Be on your best behavior on a pirate ship, or else they might force you to do this, the most stereotypical of piratical punishments. 18. This 1985 film follows a band of neighborhood teens as they go in search of

This ghost ship is doomed to sail forever and never reach its port. 23. The spoils that pirates claim from their victims. Also slang for someone’s posterior. 24. His real name was Edward Teach, but he’s better known by this moniker, inspired by his facial hair. DOWN 2. This Gilbert & Sullivan operetta features a man who is “the very model of a modern Major-General.” 8. If a pirate receives a piece of paper bearing this, he’s been judged guilty by his brethren and will likely lose his life.
9. This optical accessory could strengthen weak vision or obscure a missing body part. 10. Adored by the English and reviled by the Spanish, this privateer (or pirate, depending on your allegiance) was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the earth. 11. Written by Robert Louis Stevenson, this quintessential pirate novel follows the perilous adventures of Jim Hawkins. 14. Something that happened aboard the HMS Bounty. 15. This pirate buried treasure somewhere on his way to New York, only to be imprisoned, extradited to London and executed. Each year, kids gather along the promenade to hunt for his unrecovered fortune. 19. This is the type of Spanish currency most frequently found in pirates’ chests. 20. Activity Of The Week
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Sidewalk sale at the Washington Street Mall
W
hat is that delicious scent in the air? Warmth? Pollen? Bargains! It’s the Spring Sidewalk Sale at the Washington Street Mall on May 21 and 22. Cape May’s Washington Street Mall is one of the most successful outdoor malls in the country. Created in 1972, this threeblock pedestrian concourse is the heart of Cape May. There are many ways to enjoy the mall - stroll before your dinner reservation, shop for Christmas presents in July, pick up accessories for your beach outfit. You can find shoes, baby gifts and artwork in addition to fun beach items, and the sidewalk sale means there are bargains everywhere. On Saturday, street performers will be on hand to add to the fun. Many of the shops are family businesses, with several generations involved. If you shop with several generations of your family, however, you’d be wise to plan ahead. Remember, the dog is not invited. First, make your dinner plans. People shop better with firm dinner plans. Collier’s Liquor Store is on Jackson, in case your
restaurant is BYOB. Next, note the locations of the restrooms – one set at Ocean Street and the other on Decatur Street. Now you are free to shop – and if your trendy grandma is in town, duck into the Free Shop to show her the jeans you want for your birthday. Buy a raffle ticket for the car in front of Our Lady Star of the Sea and imagine how good you’ll look behind the wheel. Get a sample of fudge from

The Original Fudge Kitchen. Browse through Atlantic Books, but set a time limit or you’ll miss dinner. Sons, nephews and brothers are required to make bra fitting jokes outside of Lace Silhouettes – leave them behind if you really want to shop, or send them to Dellas 5&10 to browse. At the mini-mall, take the escalator up to Second Story Sweets, and note that there is no escalator down – there are stairs. Don’t forget a popcorn sample from Cape May Popcorn. You can learn a lot while shopping. For example, the Winterwood building was built as the New Jersey Trust and Safe Deposit Company in 1895. The church was built in 1911. Monkey Farts is a funny name for soap. Everyone laughs at the window of Great White Shark. People coming out of Good Scents smell good. Lovebirds are oblivious to the the circle of boys pretending to urinate into the fountain. The kids know you aren’t going into the Toy Shop for change. The Mall is a great place to spend some time – and save a little money – in Cape May. Next week: The Unofficial Start of Summer

Mallory is a very energetic young girl and she loves to play. Sometimes she’s a little rough, but she just has too much energy to burn. Because of this, smaller kids would not be the best fit for her. She’s a very sweet girl, but doesn’t get along with other pets, so she would need to be an only pet. With a little training, she might be the perfect dog for you! Come down to the shelter and see if she might be a good fit. Adoption fee is $95.
«
O’Malley is a cool looking twoyear-old English Pointer. He’s enthusiastic and very curious of his surroundings. He’s knows basic commands but he is really going to need a home where he will get lots of stimulation and exercise. He does love his toys, though he can be a little mouthy with them. Because of this it is recommended that he not go to a home with smaller children. Adoption fee is $95.
«
Aubrey is a sweet young gal who loves to be around people, especially when she is outside playing. She’s very energetic and will need lots of exercise. Since she’s so exuberant we recommend she go to a family with older children. If you have the patience and are willing to dedicate the time needed for training, please stop by and meet Aubrey today. You’ll both be happy you did. Adoption fee is $95.

Petunia came in with her two sisters, Amore and Villia. Their owner got very sick and couldn’t care for them anymore. She’s adjusted well here, but she would love to be in a home again, as she seems lonely. She is a very sweet girl that loves attention. Stop by the shelter and see if she may be the cat for you! Adoption fee is $8.

Villia came to the shelter with her sisters Petunia and Amore. Her owner got sick and couldn’t take care of them anymore. She has a beautiful, soft white coat with special brown marks on her ears. She’s a sweet, affectionate girl looking for the perfect folks to take her to a new home! Could you be her new owner? Adoption fee is $20.

Albert is looking for a new home. He loves to be pet, but make sure you take care when you do. When you pet him, he may grab your hand if you stop! He would make a great barn cat, and is a great mouser. He wouldn’t be great with small children. Stop by the shelter if you think he might be a good fit for you. Adoption fee is $35.

he place to be on May 12 was the opening night party for Say Goodnight, Gracie at Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grill at the Montreal Inn. An overflow crowd of well-wishers joined Joel Rooks to celebrate his performance of George Burns. With the sound of the surf across the street and a cold drink in their hand, some of Cape May’s most fascinating people got together to laugh and discuss the evening’s fare. But if you missed this one, there are still five more opening nights on the Cape May Stage calendar for you to enjoy. Say Goodnight, Gracie is a love story between Gracie Allen and George Burns, but it is also the story of immigration in this country. As we debate immigration policy anew in 2011, there is a resonance in this play that is even more contemporary. It is also the history of show business and the death of certain institutions like vaudeville to make room for new technology like television. Once again, broadcast television seems to be an endangered species as the convergence of computers and digital content take over our leisure time. Of course, Say Goodnight, Gracie is pure entertainment, but it can provoke thoughtful discussions as well. Call 884-1341 or go online to capemaystage.com to order tickets now. Those looking for extended savings can get a subscription and save 15% or go to the “Dinner & A Show” page on the website and choose one of Cape May’s finest dining establishments while getting a discounted ticket to the area’s finest theatre. People all over the country talk about the programming and amazing performers who come to Cape May Stage. Speaking of amazing performers, this is your last chance to get tickets for Brad Zimmerman in My Son The Waiter - a Jewish Tragedy performing on Monday, May 23. This is a show you don’t want to miss. It was selected to launch our third annual Second Stage Series because we think of Brad Zimmerman carrying on the tradition begun by George Burns. Prepare to laugh until it hurts. Bird Droppings
I
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
f you are reading these words, it is already past. As I write them, it is yet to be. I’m speaking, of course, about the World Series of Birding. I’m anticipating it. You missed it. And this column would concern us both a good deal less than it already does except for all the good that falls in the wake of this celebrated event. You think I’m talking about money, right? I’m not. But since we’re on the subject of money, I might want to take a moment to thank the hundreds of people (mostly Cape May Bird Observatory members) who made a pledge on the birds seen by our team on May 14. You guys are great! Economic downturn? Not according to your generosity. You made our day and you helped raise a lot of money for the Cape May Bird Observatory. Back to the good. What puts the good in World Series of Birding has a great deal to do with birds and how we look at them. You see, all birds might be created equal but they don’t remain that way in the minds of birders.
Over time they assume levels of value. Birds you see all the time fall to the bottom of the pile. Birds you see seasonally become seasonally significant. Birds you see infrequently become valuable. Birds you rarely see become rare. A bird you have never seen rings the
gong. But on the World Series of Birding, egalitarianism rules. As does ploveritarianism. As does vireoitarianism. As does duckitarianism. That’s right. An eagle is as important as a mallard as is as important as a starling. In the World Series of Birding, all birds count as one. So on that special day, each and every bird is savored alike. Wouldn’t this be a wonderful world if every day we appreciated a Carolina Chickadee as much as a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher? Sure, I admit it. Chickadees are just cute. Scissor-tailed Flycatchers are f lamboyant. But I ask you, which bird would you choose to spend the rest of your life with? Which bird would you take to the prom and which one would you want to take home to meet the parents? Take European Starling: the bird we love to hate. It usurps the nest cavities of other

Bird Droppings ? From Page 97 birds. It eats all the suet. It clogs drain pipes with nest material. But... when was the last time you actually looked at a starling? They’re beautiful (in a Charles Bronson sort of way). Their feathers glisten (like too much hair tonic). They sing beautifully (when they aren’t screeching or nattering). And Canada Geese. If you go on a CMBO field trip, almost never does a leader even mention Canada Geese. If they do it’s usually to give directions. “OK, there’s a Greater Yellowlegs just left of that Canada Goose.” But, on the World Series of Birding, on that blessed day, the goose and the shorebird rate equally. There should be more days like World Series of Birding Day. Imagine how wonderful it would be if every time you saw a Mute Swan, you got the same charge that you would if you saw a Whooping Swan! I know it’s a lot to imagine. Just try. May 14 was the 28th annual New Jersey Audubon World Series of Birding where teams of birders, from novice to well-worn veterans, converge from around the globe
Let's give the European Starling credit, just this once. to bird for 24 hours all within the state of New Jersey to raise money for habitat preservation (and to have fun)! Even though the event is over, it’s not too late for you to pledge your support. Just head over to the Cape May Bird Observatory at 701 East Lake Drive, overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point – THE information spot for anything to do with nature, and tell one of the staff that you want to donate to Pete Dunne’s World Series team. You can do a f lat pledge or a certain amount per species that was seen (like $1 a bird). Pete’s team total will be posted on the official results available at the Bird Observatory or online at www.
WorldSeriesofBirding.org. While you are there, pick up the schedule of daily walks and a free birding map. Then go out and see how many birds you can see in a day. The center is open every day from 9:30am to 4:30pm throughout May. Ask any of our staff – they are always glad to help with anything you need – even things you didn’t know you needed yet. The CMBO offers naturalist-led field trips throughout the year. And don’t forget the newest books on and about birding and nature. Pick up a bargain from the vintage book selection, or some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise. Need a gift for a nature enthusiast friend but are clueless as to what they want or need? Pick up a gift card, redeemable at any of our New Jersey Audubon Centers throughout the state. And if you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, visit www.BirdCapeMay. org, where birding is just a click away! Seymore Thanu is New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island
HAVE a crush on my plumber. I can’t help it. He doesn’t look like your stereotypical plumber, the one with the too-low trousers you’ll see parodied in Saturday morning cartoons. My plumber is handsome and masculine and gentlemanly. The way he plunges my tub makes me want to run around the house dumping pennies into all of my toilets. I even love his name. It’s Clarence. And yes, that is his real name. I considered changing it for this column, but then I figured that if I don’t, Clarence might read this, figure out how much I adore him, and track me down for something other than a leaky faucet. When he comes over, I have trouble talking to Clarence. I don’t know enough about plumbing to carry an intelligent conversation. Plus, I get nervous. Clarence is, after all, the only man I’ve invited upstairs in an embarrassingly long time. The last time Clarence came over, to fix a testy garbage disposal, I tried to be charming by giving him my best plumbing joke. “Have you heard the one about the cop’s toilet?” I said. “It got stolen right out of the
station. Right now, the police have nothing to go on.” Clarence laughed, a genuine belly laugh, and I could tell that he liked me, too. I should have been happy and I was. At least, until he went to work on my sink with his plunger. Then I was too grossed out to be happy. I told myself it wasn’t a big deal. I told myself not to picture the bacteria multiplying exponentially in the very place where I rinse my fruit and wash my dishes. But I couldn’t help it.
I forgot about batting my lashes and pouting my lips and trying to be cute or funny. Instead, I scrunched up my nose in a lessthan-sexy expression and asked Clarence if the plunger resting so dangerously close to my cutting board was the same plunger that’s been in other peoples' toilet bowls. “Um,” Clarence said, “I can lie if you want.” “But you sanitize it between jobs,” I said, “Right?” Clarence shrugged apologetically, gave me the bill, and left. This was it, the longest conversation we’ve ever had, and it involved a terrible joke and a dirty plunger. I put on a pair of latex gloves and poured a bottle of bleach into my sink. The truth is, having a crush stinks. You can spend years making silly jokes in an effort to appear charming and collected when what you actually are is a hopeless germaphobe who contemplates clogging a toilet with small change. You might as well be up-front from the beginning. Resist the urge to play games. Put yourself out there. Tell him how you feel. Above all, be honest. Otherwise, like a plunger in the kitchen sink, you’re full of crap.

Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "Cave of Forgotten Dreams."
B
efore we get all wrapped up in the high glitz of this summer's Hollywood blockbusters, let's get deep – really deep. In Cave of Forgotten Dreams, we're taken on an exploration of the earliest cave art ever found. These are fascinating works from thousands and thousands of years ago. Werner Herzog is the filmmaker, who is best known for his work in Grizzly Man (2005), another documentary. Here, Herzog is given exclusive (and very rare) access to the Chauvet caves in Southern France. You don't have to be a spelunker to enjoy the caves' natural beauty, but when you see the drawings themselves, mostly of bison or horses or rhinos, it is breathtaking. We have our fair share of artists in Cape May County, right? Well, get to know your ancestors a little. These drawings and composites of drawings that are thousands of years in the making are truly remarkable. If the best teacher is history, then the best curators of ancient art are the Chauvet caves. Archeologists, anthropologists and a whole bunch of other "gists" are interviewed in this film. Some of their intellectual themes may

In addition, some of the lessons learned are repeated unnecessarily, as the film takes about 20 or 30 minutes too long to make its point. The narrative was sometimes preachy or (if this is even possible) poetic to a fault. My last criticism is that of the sin of

omission. This film could have explored much more than just the caves and the observations that came from the discovery. There were several insights in the human condition that can be gleaned by this film – namely that the urge to create art is so innate that no formal training or education is needed to fulfill that instinct. But perhaps it is better for the viewer to be creative in their own way of interpreting the lessons from this film by simply hearing the facts and seeing the images. No matter the criticism, there is still much to enjoy about this film – if not simply the opportunity to take a well-needed break from the cornucopia of mind candy that hits theaters this summer. Don’t agree with me about the mind candy? Think there are plenty of good films to see and not just the ones with hangover high-jinx or explosive CGI effects? Well, tell me about it. Let me know what you’ve seen in theaters and what your insights are. We could use them in an upcoming edition of the movie column. Send your comments to capemayfilm@hotmail. com. Chris Bezaire on the latest trends and sales on the island
AST year was a very strange one for real estate in Cape May. On a positive note there were a total of 180 transactions, compared to 106 in 2009. The average home price was also up, from $564,000 to $670,000. The problem was that there was no rhythm to it, no conclusive trends. One month was gangbusters and the next was as quiet as a mouse. So far the start of 2011 is the same. January and February were very slow but we now see signs of things picking up again. Another good sign is the average sales-tolist price for properties in the area, specifically single family homes. For five quarters in a row, that ratio has increased – from 79% in the first quarter of 2010 to 91% in the first quarter of 2011. Remember, though, that the main reason for this is that sellers and buyers are being more realistic about property prices. All this means that even with continued economic uncertainty Cape May is holding its own. And with interest rates still at low levels buyers are realizing now is the time to buy their own little piece of heaven here. So what if you can’t buy? Well, the rental
news is very encouraging... this year is running 15-20% above last year at this time in terms of gross rental bookings and total dollar rental amounts. I have heard the same from local businesses and B&B owners. On the commercial front, there have been a couple of major changes. The Atlas Motel, which was owned and operated by the Satt family for more than 40 years, is now in the hands of Nick Nazai, who owns and operates Hotel Alcott and West Cape Motel. The Ocean Club, as the old Atlas is now called, has undergone a remodeling and will be a great new first-class accommodation for Cape May. You might also have noticed that Henry's on the Beach, which was owned and operated
for 15 years by Ed and Teresa Henry, is now called The Beach House, and is owned and operated by the Almadani family, who run the town’s 7-11. When it comes to real estate in Cape May, I think the combination of the positive market data from the last four quarters and the changing of hands for these long-standing businesses symbolizes the direction Cape May will be headed in. For the last year many people have been hovering and nervously waiting to see what was going to happen. It’s time now to stop hovering and start heading in a new direction. Change is inevitable, it is how we deal with change that defines us. I think that Cape May has historically always dealt with change in a positive manner. So whether for a day or a lifetime; enjoy your stay here and know that the beautiful resort that you love will change with the times, yet remain the same place you remembered.
