The years between 1882-1884 were especially momentous for Cape May, with the construction of the Carroll Villa and Atlantic Hotel on Jackson Street, the Lafayette Hotel on the corner of Beach and Decatur, the Star Villa on Ocean Street and the famous iron pier. Electrical and gas lines were also run throughout the city. The iron pier was finished in 1884, extending the boardwalk 1,000 feet. Ramblings From The Editors

L

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

ATE spring is a glorious time of year in Cape May. The town, like the trees and flowers lining the Washington Street Mall, starts to bloom again. Shops open their doors, restaurants fire up their grills and a few unfamiliar faces make their way back into our town. But, it’s only a few unfamiliar faces, meaning it’s the perfect time of year for locals to snag a seat at the Lobster House’s Raw Bar or grab a bite at some of the town’s most popular (and typically packed) restaurants.

That is why it doesn’t make sense that we were one of only a few tables at Frescos on Thursday night. Just a few weeks from now you’ll be lined up at the door just waiting to get in, so why wasn’t everyone in Cape May at Frescos for their opening? We’d been counting down the days and were surprised to find the restaurant wasn’t packed with familiar local faces. The food, as always, was exceptional – their lobster, champagnecream sauce makes the Seafood Pescatore worth all the carbohydrates in the pappardelle... even with swimsuit season right around the corner. The guys behind the line – Chef Joe Badger, Will Bassett-Powell and Jonathan Martin – deserve a shout-out.

So remember, gentle reader... this is the time of year to get out and sample the sweet tastes of Cape May before things get crazy. Don’t waste time sitting on your duff awaiting the return of summer. You know just how busy you’ll be after Memorial Day, which happens to be this weekend, and you know just how hard it will be to get a seat around the fire pit at The Rusty Nail. Take advantage of the last few days of spring before the town is inundated with carloads

Speaking of starting the season off right, a big THANK-YOU to all of our friends who stopped by the launch party for this year’s Cool Cape May book. We’re quite proud of it – be sure to snag your copy ASAP. About this time last year we wrote about Jack Wright having his bicycle stolen from outside the Exit Zero global HQ. This past week staff member Dan Mathers had two bicycles stolen in the space of a couple days (Dan’s silver and black cruiser was stolen from the bike rack in front of The Beach House restaurant in daylight). Both bikes were locked, which means the thief must be carrying around some hefty bolt cutters.

It is a frustrating situation, and it will cost Dan a couple hundred dollars to replace both his bike and his wife’s bike (a greenish lady’s mountain bike).

We hope you will all keep your eyes open for any shady character walking around with a set of bolt cutters. If you do, give the police a call. In the meantime we suggest everyone head over to Swain’s and purchase themselves one of those hefty, solid metal, U-shaped locks. Dan was using $7 braided wire combination locks, but an upgrade is clearly worth the investment. We doubt this lowlife would get away with carrying a plasma cutter around with him.

We’ve said it before... you can leave your front door unlocked in Cape May and get no trouble, but bikes, you need to guard them with your life. Get yourself to Swain’s today, and get a sturdy lock before some creep rips you off, too.

 

We here at EZ Global HQ have a feeling that this will be a great summer – all those folks talking up Cape May on TripAdvisor can’t be wrong, and we’ve been hearing some good news around town about rentals and B&B bookings, which are obviously good indicators of what’s to come.

Speaking of fine establishments, we dropped by The Ebbitt Room on Saturday night for the opening of its new bar and revamped restaurant. What a difference! The tiny service bar has been replaced by a U-shaped bar that sits around a dozen people, and a wall has been taken down in the restaurant area, creating a freeflowing space that’s buzzing with energy.

Furthermore, the floor, walls and ceiling have all been given a do-over. The end result

A user’s guide to Cape May City Council meetings... By Jon Roth and Kate Chadwick

elcome to another installment of Exit Zero’s User’s Guide to City Council meetings.

Disclaimer: this is not meant to trivialize the importance of such meetings – we appreciate the gravity of this and all government proceedings. But at the end of the day, we all put our pants on one leg at a time (some more successfully than others), so please enjoy our lighthearted assessment.

Meeting of Cape May City Council, Tuesday, May 17...

7:01 – Pledge of allegiance 7:05 – Mayor Ed Mahaney strikes the gavel. He is attired in a navy blazer with a flag pin and striped tie. Clerk Diane Weldon takes roll: absent is Councilmember Deanna Fiocca. Mayor Mahaney assures us she has had excellent attendance and the members of the council “know her wishes.” As usual, the notes from the council meeting are being sent to every other paper in the area.

7:06 – Mayor Mahaney discusses the Knights of Columbus Fund Drive at Star of

the Sea, which has been taking place for 40 years, and thanks the two K of C (not to be confused with KFC) members seated in the audience of about one dozen – why are these gigs so sparsely populated, we wonder?

(That’s rhetorical – we know why.) These men and others will collect donations outside of Swain’s, Wawa, Star of the Sea and other local establishments to benefit children with special needs.

7:07 – Clerk Diane Weldon, wearing a peasant blouse, reads a proclamation declaring May 28 and 29 official K of C collection of funds days in Cape May; Mayor Mahaney presents the representatives with a certificate and a check.

7:09 – Late agenda items regarding the annual sidewalk sale for merchants on the Washington Street Mall (we hope you all made it out between Thursday and Sunday – the sales were killer).

7:11 – Bond ordinance 235-2011 regards a $500,000 Community Affairs grant to comply with the mission of the American Disability Association. The money will be used in a project to improve beachfront

accessibility, add a handicap ramp to the Franklin Street Civic Center and widen sidewalks – that last item should benefit everyone else who doesn’t enjoy walking single-file through town.

7:15 – All vote yes on Ordinance 2352011.

7:15:50 – Resolution 234-2011 makes Elmira a two-way street – the traffic light should be programmed by Memorial Day. Uh-huh. All vote yes to this as well.

7:17 – Mayor Mahaney remarks that Deputy Mayor Jack Wichterman is smiling tonight because it is his turn to read resolutions. There are 23 of them, so we settle in as Wichterman warns us, “If I catch anyone sleeping, it goes in the paper.”

We scanned the room several times, but everyone remained remarkably conscious. Here are some “highlights:” 99-2011. Harborfest slated for June 15.

100-2011. Housing inspections on homes, hotels and motels to ensure they all have the proper mercantile licenses.

102-2011. Annual fireworks display approved for the Fourth of July. Annually, 40,000 people come to town for this event.

103-2011. A new green initiative is introduced for civic,

commercial and residential buildings. Mahaney remarks “the time has come for this.”

Indeed. We wonder how they’ll fit solar panels on those pesky Victorian turrets though.

108-2011. Award of recycling removal contract. Wichterman, nattily attired in a spring-y, lime-green dress shirt, remarks, “Not too exciting, but we need it.”

111-2011. Agreement to hold closed meeting with attorney regarding the Beach Theatre, which is described as “a decrepit building that’s sitting out there.”

Of course, “anybody can read the minutes” regarding the Beach Theatre meeting “once the topic is eradicated.” Besides the Terminator vocabulary, this sounds a bit backwards to us.

120-2011. Remington & Vernick engineering contract for either repair or demolition and replacement of water tank at Columbia and Madison. Mayor Mahaney mentions the town of Sanibel Island, FL, that lobbied to have their water tank

placed underground because the above-ground structure was an “eyesore.”

121-2011. Annual sidewalk sale, where Deputy Mayor

Wichterman reminds us the Kiwanis Club will have a car on the mall for raffle. Councilman Bill Murray adds “By the way, the Kiwanis car will be here at the next city council meeting,” eliciting chuckles.

7:31 – Public Portion: Paul Johnston, in a lavender checked shirt and light jeans, makes a brief statement about Harborfest, which coincides this year with the 100th anniversary of Cape May Harbor, built by the Army Corp of Engineers in 1911.

Now it’s the fourth biggest port in the country with an inland canal wide and deep enough to berth the Battleship NJ. 7:34 – Bernie Haas, attired in a checked blue and white Oxford and khakis (was it khaki night and no one told us?) begins with a disclaimer: “No, I don’t want to talk about that decrepit building. That decrepit historic building.” Instead he asks about the cost of a Ford Explorer purchased by the city: $24,000.

He also asks for specifics on the city’s Green NJ initiative before leaving the podium. As he goes, Wichterman offers a parting shot: “Bernie, as for the Beach Theatre, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

Councilman Murray dissents, arguing that Ogden Construction ought to pay the fee, but Mayor Mahaney explains that “this is the most economically viable choice,” and the cost of reserving the lot was already part of the $1.5 million budget for the project.

He also mentions the K-Kids (Kiwanis Kids) will be cleaning the beach on May 23 (as everyone waits with bated breath for Deputy Mayor Wichterman to bring up the auction car again at the mention of the word “Kiwanis”).

If any readers would like to sit with Exit Zero crew at the next council meeting, it has been rescheduled for Wednesday, June 8.

7:58 – Deputy Mayor Wichterman comments on the proliferation of dogs on the mall, where they are prohibited. “I had to point out to a policeman on the mall that a man with a dog was standing right by me,” Wichterman says, then interjects as a side note that Kiwanis Club is having a huge garage sale.

Mayor Mahaney rejoins, “Mr MacLeod, will you make sure the Kiwanis Club gets an invoice for all this free advertising?”

8:07 – Paul Johnston returns to the podium and inquires how much it cost the city (and thus the taxpayers) in their failed attempt to put him out of business (he owns The Cove restaurant). The council is quiet before Attorny Monzo advises Johnston to submit a request to the Clerk’s office through the Open Records Act (or OPRA). Johnston remarks that the judge described the city’s case as “misguided, ill-advised and in bad faith” before leaving the podium.

Wednesday, May 25, 2011 8:10 – Linda Steenrod returns to the podium and inquires after the institution of sign ordinance (we have one) and whether it’s being enforced (loosely). Steenrod recently tripped over an A-frame sign, and she understood that they’re not allowed.

City Manager MacLeod explains that a permit is required for these signs, and if there’s a particular establishment with a sign, he will check on their permits. She also wants to know why the city is always picking on dogs on the mall, but not skateboarders or bicyclists. Council member Terri Swain agrees, and mentions that Swain’s Ace Hardware is a dog-friendly establishment.

ments are “not about the historic Beach Theater.” We can’t help noticed Haas’ voice resembles a certain NPR radio personality.

He explains that the Convention Hall construction has created problems for pedestrians crossing the street, and proposes the erection of two chain-link fences and perhaps a bit of community art. He then says that the city should make it more noticeable on the website about Cape May’s historic designation.

Mayor Mahaney explains that more fencing will be erected and a police officer will be stationed at this area to help with street crossings.

8:15 - The meeting is adjourned, and the members of the public still in attendance shuffle out the door while the council prepares to meet and discuss the Beach Theatre.

Your correspondents then headed to The Brown Room for our customary postcouncil aperitifs and to gossip even more shamelessly than we do in this column. A word to our readers: we noticed the same members of the audience kept returning to the podium during the public portion, perhaps because there were only 12 people in attendance. We suggest you stop by the next meeting (that’s 1pm on June 8). You’ll at least enjoy some Kiwanis Club jokes.

ROUCHO Marx said, “Outside of a dog, man’s best friend is a book. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” That Groucho, he knew a thing or two.

Women would be wise to understand the relationship between men and their dogs.

I coveted a dog my whole life, but various reasons kept me from getting one for years. Without question, the shelter puppy I finally adopted was my best buddy. We did everything together, went everywhere together, and he became an expert in picking up women (helped by the leash my sister got him, embroidered with the announcement, “My dad is single.”) We enjoyed 14 years together before cancer claimed him, and I wouldn’t trade a single boring evening in front of the TV with my faithful furry pal snoring loudly at my feet.

Some say dogs offer unconditional love, but I’m reasonably certain that the conditions of that love are the three Ts: treats, toys, and tummy rubs. Still, my dog is the happy face staring at me in the morning, the wagging tail at the door when

I come home at night, the sounding board who always listens to me, and my reason for getting off the couch on some bad days. There’s certainly room in my life for a woman in addition to my dog, but not in place of him.

That was Nancy’s mistake. We began dating a few months after I adopted a new puppy. She’s from Chester County, so seeing her meant taking the dog along or dropping him at the kennel. She rarely visited Cape

May, and when she did she wouldn’t stay at my house, only at the lovely but no-dogsallowed Virginia Hotel, so I drove to her a lot. The puppy loved her place: the big yard, the abundance of squirrels, the soft carpets.

But he acted like a puppy: he left nose prints on the windows, he tracked grass clippings inside, he left hair on the floor, and one night, left alone in the laundry room while we went out, he chewed on an old rug. No big deal, she said, but he wasn’t welcome there anymore.

So, she demanded I choose. The woman, or the dog? Keep seeing her, knowing the puppy wasn’t part of the relationship? Or pick stray dog hairs from my dinner for one?

It wasn’t a difficult decision.

Drop by Cape May’s dog park on any given weekend morning and you’ll find lots of guys reveling in the joy of their hounds.

There’s nothing we like more than living vicariously through our canines. And while we love women, trying to come between a man and his dog can be a relationship killer.

You might be the woman we love, but you’ll never be a man’s best friend.

Cape May Forum’s Big Night

Winery tours, wine tastings, art auctions and great music – don’t miss a very special evening!

he Cape May Forum – Chautauqua at the Shore extends an invitation to the Cape May County community and its visitors for a special evening celebrating the launch of its 2011 program. Cape May Forum’s Big Night will be held at the Cape May Winery, 711 Town Bank Road, on Saturday, June 4 at 7pm.

Tickets are now on sale by phone and on the CMF web site. All proceeds from this evening benefit the fall program, “Guess What’s Coming for Dinner? - The Politics of Food in the 21st Century.”

The June 4 rundown of activities will guarantee you a big night in a special setting. You can tour the Cape May Winery, one of the area’s top tourist attractions.

Guests will have the opportunity to explore the winery with Toby Craig, proprietor, on one of two tours that evening. Visitors can also sample the wine bar.

The vineyard has grown over the past two decades to produce some of South Jersey’s most distinguished wines. Blended wines, both dry and sweet, really hit the

mark, and are a specialty there. Guests will also enjoy a delicious variety of hors d’oeuvres as only the Washington Inn can serve them.

There will also be an art auction at the event. Did you know the Cape May Forum has been running a New Jersey-wide poster competition? The winner of the contest

will be unveiled on the Big Night, and all juried work will be on sale at live and silent auctions. The live auction will be hosted by Jack Wright, Exit Zero Editor/Publisher. A limited-edition Politics of Food Art Poster will be the Cape May Forum’s gift to you.

As if all this weren’t enough, you can dance to the sounds of the Bob Campanell Band on the winery’s newly opened terrace and fire pit, overlooking the vineyards.

Cape May Forum – Chautauqua at the Shore (CMF) is a non-profit organization founded in 2009 as a consortium of the region’s organizations and individuals. CMF provides an annual forum where creative and inspiring artists, speakers, events and courses are presented to further enhance the Cape May experience for residents and visitors alike. CMF aims to attract more visitors to Cape May by integrating and showcasing the existing cultural, artistic, and educational aspects of the community.

Cape May Cooks

A new column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle

I

t’s the official start of summer, and in newly re-populated kitchens all over Cape May, families are wondering – what do we have to eat here that tastes good and doesn’t take forever to prepare? As wonderful as Cape May restaurants are, we can’t eat out all the time!

Exit Zero, as always, has some answers for you in this new weekly column penned by two local cooks. Don’t expect Martha Stewart – who has time for all that? We’ll give you delicious recipes using fresh local and seasonal ingredients, easily prepared in most kitchens – full-time resident or not. Sometimes we’ll suggest a complete meal. Other weeks we’ll feature a theme.

Mostly we hope to encourage yet another form of healthy fun in cool, culinary Cape May. Happy eating!

This is a grill-centric menu, so you’ll need one of those.

We’ll plan on serving six people. Here’s an appetizer for your first-of-the-summer party: Grilled Clams 15 minutes 36 littleneck clams butter sauce (optional) 2 sticks unsalted butter juice of 1 lemon 2 tbsp chopped parsley Heat the grill to medium high. Wash the clams to remove sand and dirt. Place the clams directly on grates of the grill and close lid. The clams will open in 6-10 minutes, depending on the fire. Remove with long tongs – the shells are very hot – and serve individually or arrange them on a platter.

If your grill has a separate gas burner, combine the butter, lemon juice and parsley in a shallow pan and melt. If not, prepare on the stove. Now for your entrée and vegetable:

Colorful Fish Kabobs 45 minutes 2 lbs assorted fish (swordfish and tuna or salmon), cut in chunks 3 assorted peppers (red, yellow and/or orange), cut into squares Marinade: ½ cup olive oil 1 fresh orange, juice plus grated rind 1 large clove garlic, minced 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated 2 tbsp flat leaf parsley, chopped 1 tsp crushed chili flakes (optional) fresh ground pepper To make the marinade, put the ingredients in a glass or ceramic bowl and whisk. Place the fish chunks in the bowl and marinate in a cool place for 20 minutes. Remove the fish and toss the pepper squares in the marinade to coat. Thread the fish and peppers on to six oiled wood or metal skewers.

Grill kabobs for 5-8 minutes on medium heat, turning once.

Grilled Asparagus Rafts 20 minutes 2 tbsp olive oil salt and pepper 1 tsp balsamic vinegar one large bunch of asparagus, medium-thick stalks are best.

Break off the tough ends of the asparagus. In a large bowl, combine the first three ingredients and add the asparagus. Marinate for 10 minutes.

Thread about six asparagus spears on two skewers to make little ‘rafts’ – one through the tops of the spears below the tips, and one through the lower ends. Grill for about four minutes.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

id you know Cape May is the birthplace of ice cream?

Perhaps you did: you are an erudite lot, known for your taste, elegance and certain peculiar sexual habits. But no more of that: did you also know that our city was where the most powerful, most flavorful ice cream ever made was created? Of course you didn’t, for only one man survived that day to tell the tale, and he paid such a terrible price that the details will horrify you further down this very page.

I remember it like yesterday (when it was really more than half a century ago): the boardwalk was thick with people slurping on cones. I thought I saw on some faces a certain ennui, a boredom with the humble ice cream, and knew then that it was time to up the ante.

So I locked myself away with the world’s top ice creamiers, who also counted among their number some of the world’s foremost German rocket scientists. I was never able to work out why, other than the speculation that sweating in searing hot bunkers below

a rocket’s exhaust cause a chap to lust for the very best frozen treats. And that is also why rockets are the same shape as ice cream cones – an homage to the refreshment.

Anyways, we realized that the pinnacle of ice cream evolution would be to pack the flavor and creaminess of 100 regular ice creams into the one cone. Well, those rocket scientists devised a machine of fiendish complexity and frightening size, where helmeted and masked technicians shoveled fresh ice cream into a pressure chamber.

All was going well. The lights were dimming, the valves were crackling and static electricity was making the hairs on my head stand on end. The blame for what happened next was not mine, I stress, even if my hand was the one that turned the large, red dial marked “Intensität” (those Germans…) from “hoch” (high) to “lächerlich Hohe” (ridiculously high). I mean, who puts that on a dial if it’s not meant to be used?

I recall a high-pitched scream, everything went very bright, then there was what can only be described as an explosion of glass, metal and taste. A shimmering glitter coated every surface of the room, smelling most wonderful. I had no choice but to touch a finger to my tongue, and could see everyone else doing so too.

Doctors later said that only I stumbled out of that basement, raving about tasting God. The others had all suffered exploded heads, and army bulldozers had to fill in the site and concrete it over for fear of contamination. My tongue, sadly, was unsalvageable, and I now wear an ivory replica in its place.

HE internet is an amazing tool.

It can also be an amazing waste of time. Thanks to the web, I know that my friend Todd had Cheerios for breakfast; Carla is, like, totally over her boyfriend; and Samantha can’t fit into last summer’s jeans…OMG! Many of us adopt an online persona.

Some folks communicate their mood only via song lyric: “Yesterday, I was a blue jean baby. Today I’m free, free falling.” Some people are chronic here-is-what-I’m-eating-now posters: “Awesome Blue Moon Pizza!!” I’m guilty of it too. I post nonsense online more than I’d like to admit.

Yesterday it was my favorite Popeye quote.

We live in a world that encourages us to update 600 of our closest pals on every passing whim in 140 characters or less.

Maybe this is why we think our voices are so important, and why online restaurant reviews are so popular. We’re convinced our opinions matter, so everybody’s a critic.

I’ve perused some of the reviews that have been written about my service.

Guests have complained on websites like TripAdvisor and OpenTable that I run around the dining room like it’s on fire (I wouldn’t have to run, dear guests, if you didn’t suck down refills like YOU were on fire.); that I’m so young I look like I should be doing body shots in a college bar instead of serving shots of amuse-bouche in a fine dining room (body shots? Well, I’ve never! Okay, maybe once. But it was spring break.); and that I too proudly announce to my tables that our whole fish comes with its head intact (if I don’t get this point across, Grandma Connie on table two will most surely, when she notices her dinner’s got eyeballs, have MY head).

The point is, enough with the virtual complaining already. Just because there is a forum for every little gripe doesn’t mean we should all take advantage of it. I think a little more LOLing and a little less FMLing would do us all good.

And I’m not alone. A study conducted at Kent State University in 2008 found that students made to write letters of gratitude over a six-week period reported feeling more satisfied with their lives. Dr Steven Toepfer, who conducted the study, believes that positive, non-whiny writing can increase immune system function and reduce symptoms of depression.

I think we should all give it a shot (yes, an actual shot, Mr Foodie57, not a body shot). If you don’t roast me online, I won’t tweet about your bad tip. I’ll serve your whole fish with a side of gratitude if you suck back that refill with a splash of appreciation. But if you still insist on blogging about every stinking complaint, I have just one request. OMG, guys, at least watch your grammar.

Dear Answer Lady I have a crush on someone completely inappropriate. I’m involved, she’s involved.

There’s a race difference, a religious difference, an age difference, even a class difference. Cape May is too small for me to avoid her altogether, and we work together in the same restaurant, so we run into each other at all the time. How do I snap out of this? – Crushing Dear Crushing The Answer Lady’s immediate reaction is to instruct you to tell your crush-ee that you perceive a “class difference” between you; your crush will come to a screeching halt as she hands you your own severed head on a platter. Crushes are tough, especially when they’re on someone with whom we have no chance, although none of the factors you named are necessarily insur-

mountable. (Now opposing sexual orientations, that would be insurmountable.) But crushes can be endured, even conquered, if one is determined. Limiting the amount of time you spend with the crush-ee is a no-brainer, but the Answer Lady will say it anyway, because sometimes we lose our minds in Crushville. The quickest way to get over it is to find someone else to “crush on,” but the Answer Lady advises against it here, since you are “involved.” So, try to train yourself to think of this person in the

most negative possible terms. It’s easy to have a crush when you’re dazzled by them at their best, all dolled up on a Friday night (this is why everyone looks good at the Boiler Room, though beer goggles may be a factor). Replace these with thoughts of her incoherent and vomiting at the end of that Friday night. Or sick and sniveling on the couch with three days of unwashed hair and a runny nose, or reaming out a hapless waiter because she’s had a bad day. People show us what they want us to see, especially if they’re aware of and flattered by your crush. Keep your wits about you, and let it run its annoying course.

junior Rebecca Holden has been tearing it up on the softball field, anchoring the team behind the plate as starting catcher.

Last week, she led the team with a home run, giving the Tigers the goahead run in their victory versus league rival, Mainland.

The Fishing Creek native started playing softball in 3rd grade as an outfielder, but due to her short attention span, she became a permanent catcher for the team in 4th grade. Since then she has been the starting varsity catcher since her freshman year in high school.

The daughter of Sharon and Michael Holden, Rebecca is the second eldest of four children. “I like to hit home runs when we play at home, that way I can dedicate it to my mother,” said Holden.

Holden, also a field hockey goalie, has fully committed herself to playing Division I field hockey at Rutgers University in the fall of 2012. Although she won’t be playing softball at the college level, she says that “being a catcher for softball and a goalie for field hockey are almost one in the same.” Her success on the softball field will undoubtedly carry over to her field hockey games this the fall.

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Memorial Day

here is a line in the Ernest Hemingway short story, “Hills Like White Elephants,” that captures the bittersweet feeling of Memorial Day weekend: “Everything tastes of licorice. Especially all the things you’ve waited so long for.”

We’ve certainly waited long enough for summer to enjoy the sweetness. Sure, Cape May is a vibrant year-round community, but it has a special flavor in the summertime.

Your favorite restaurants are waiting for you, although there are some changes – the Merion Inn has recovered from a fire, for example, and the “little brother” from George’s now has his own place down the street. But you can still get your cotton-candy-confetti ice cream at Dry Dock, your appletini at Martini Beach and your silver-dollar pancakes at Uncle Bill’s. There’s a craft fair at the Physick Estate. Take a traditional trolley tour, like “Mansions by the Sea,” or something a little less traditional, like “Cape May Unzipped.”

It’s time to start your beach reading, and to break out your kite – the Wildwood Kite Festival is this weekend, if you need

inspiration. Go fishing, or try the Fish Fry to benefit the Center for Community Arts on Saturday, 11am-6pm, at the West Cape May Fire Hall – $12 for adults, $6 for kids. Dust off the beach chair, buy your beach tag, dip your toes in the water; it’s summer, whether the weather cooperates or not.

But Memorial Day is bittersweet, too.

Spend some time remembering the sacrifice.

Don your red, white and blue and go to hear the Atlantic Brass Band at the Rotary Bandstand on Sunday. Buy poppies from a veteran. Join the Memorial Day ceremony on Monday at 9am at the Columbia Avenue monument, or the county ceremony at 2pm at the Cape May County Veterans’ Cemetery, where John Weigand, MA1, USNR, recently returned from Afghanistan, will participate.

You can remember Ernest Hemingway, too. Hemingway’s, the restaurant in the Grand Hotel, is hosting the “Ernest Hemingway Look-a-Like Contest.” The event starts at 4pm on Sunday, May 29, and includes three separate contests – a strict look-a-like contest, a “creative interpretation of the Hemingway look” contest, and a “creative interpretation of a Hemingway story” contest.

We’ve waited so long for summer, yet it seems impossible that another year has gone by. These beautiful days can slip away before you know it. Enjoy the bitter and the sweet, and make time for a stroll to the candy store for your licorice.

emorial Day is almost upon us and with the opening of “the season” comes changes in our schedule. It also marks the big return of a beloved Second Stage performer, David Konig whose Hebrew School Dropout was “standing room only” last season.

Chris and Dave Clemans have sponsored the Second Stage Series from the very beginning, and we launched the series with a brilliant comedian last week who was in the tradition of George Burns. On June 6 we bring back Dave Konig in The Further Adventures of A Hebrew School Dropout.

Dave picks up where he left off in a completely new routine developed for Cape May Stage. Again, we reference George Burns by bringing audiences a brilliant comic who comes out of that tradition. Dave Konig converted to Catholicism and had a radio show on a Catholic station only to convert back to Judaism. His timing is perfection and his life is hilarious with truths revealed all along the way. The Second Stage celebrates comedy and now is the time to get tickets for June 6.

Bird Droppings

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

S

oon the phones will be ringing and the questions will start coming in. The time when f ledgling birds are out of their nests.

Being “found” by caring humans and presumed to be “abandoned.” Who then, motivated by anxiety and the milk of human kindness, pass their finds to the presumed waiting hands of those who work in the birding arena – like the people at the Cape May Bird Observatory. Maybe I can help prevent some of those phone calls and answer the questions in advance.

First – f ledging is part of a natural process. Birds are hatched and reared by their adults. They leave the nest but remain under the care of adults for days or weeks, then disperse to keep living until they die.

For most birds, this birth-to-death process takes much less than one year.

Dying, for young birds, is much more natural than living (providing you define natural as “probable”).

Second – regarding the definition of the word “found”: Yes, you found the bird.

Its life path intersected your own. Most

creatures upon reaching such an intersection go about their way (unless small birds are part of their diet). Humans, for some human reason, often pick the young birds up and transport them somewhere else.

Most commonly into a box, lined with grass clippings or newspaper and placed on the kitchen table or on the back porch.

Then they realize they don’t know what

to do with a baby bird, which is when they call and ask, “Now what?”

For the sake of the bird, it is much better to ask this question first, because only rarely is a baby bird really “abandoned” – meaning uncared for by adults.

Yes, sometimes birds leave the nest before they can f ly well. This doesn’t mean they are not being cared for by adults.

In some species, like Great-horned Owls, the young are hot-wired to leave the nest early. They “branch.” That is, they leave the nest but hang out in the nearby foliage. It’s a way of protecting the genetic dowry. Keeping predators from getting all the eggs (so to speak) in one basket.

Some species, like killdeer, leave their nests almost immediately. Mere hours after hatching the birds are running around.

Snapping up insects. Doing just about what the guarding adults do (except f ly).

But most of the birds that people “find” in their back yards are young robins, starlings, house sparrows, cardinals, etc. that

Bird Droppings ? From Page 105 are chirping away and drawing attention to themselves (so that the adults know where they are). They are mostly feathered. They simply cannot f ly at all or well.

What to do?

Nothing. If the bird is in your way (especially if you want to cut the grass) move it off to the side (under a bush is fine).

No, touching the bird will not make the adults “reject it.”

If you have a cat, dog or toddler who is likely to take an interest in the bird, place it (the bird, not your pet or child, although you might be tempted) on an elevated branch or in a bush out of their reach. It doesn’t have to be right where you found it.

But it does have to be someplace close, say within a hundred feet of where you found it.

No bush? Try placing the bird in a small box atop something high enough to keep it above the reach of ambitious things.

Next question. "But what should I do if the bird keeps jumping out of the box?"

Then it’s time to let nature take its course.

The one thing you should not do is bring the baby bird to the Cape May Bird Observatory.

See this fledgling Woodcock? Leave it alone!

Save yourself some gas. All they are going to do is tell you to do what I just did.

Give the adult birds a chance to nudge and nurture their precocious offspring into that upper percentile: the ones who make it to have young of their own.

Heck, the parents made the grade. The kids got their genes. They’ve got half a chance if we just let them be.

Rather not rescue baby birds that don’t need rescuing, but still want to be involved in nature? Consider taking a bird walk with the folks at the Cape May Bird Observatory.

Just stop by and ask any of the staff or volunteers and they’ll be glad to show

you what’s on our schedule. And you’ll see why the Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place to come for all your nature needs. The CMBO, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point (609-884-2736), is open every day 9:30am to 4:30pm except Tuesdays through August. The Dating Column

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island

AM not a competitive person. I don’t get bent out of shape over things like mini golf and Monopoly. I’m not cutthroat when it comes to playing games.

But when it comes to playing the field, I’ve had to man up. Dating is, by nature, a competitive sport.

I probably spend more time checking out women than I do men. Lots of girls do. We wonder if we could pull off the pleather miniskirt that the blonde at the end of the bar is rocking. We compare our buns and gams to the ones we see in Glamour. We want to know how our breasts rate on the saggy scale. We measure ourselves against the competition.

When our guy gets a new job, we secretly hope that the woman in the next cubicle has buck teeth and a unibrow. When our guy gets a new apartment, we hope that his leggy redheaded roommate moves to Guam.

No matter how insecure I’ve felt over the course of my dating career, I’ve taken heart in knowing that I am, at least, aware of who my competition is: the sexy coworker, the pretty friend, the sultry singer he’ll probably never meet anyway. And I’ve come to terms with

reality – there will always be girls out there with perkier butts or better senses of humor than I’ve got, so I might as well get over it.

What I didn’t consider is that there are also men out there with perkier butts and better senses of humor. And when it comes to competition, a girl’s sometimes got to worry about these game players, too.

For months, a friend of mine has been trying to set me up with a man we’ll call Gary.

Gary is charming, intelligent and very sexy.

He is also, according to my friend, bisexual. At first, this gave me pause, but then I reconsidered. After all, who says Prince Charming has to be straight?

Last week, I went to the Washington Inn with a gay coworker of mine named Max. And across the wine bar, we spotted Gary.

“You know,” Max said, pointing to Gary, “a friend of mine has been trying to set me up with that guy for months.”

When we realized that we’d been eyeing up the same man, of course we couldn’t help but laugh.

“Let’s each make a move,” Max joked, “and then we’ll see what happens.”

But, the truth is, I am far too insecure for this. I can’t man up. I’m simply not cutthroat enough to be competing against two teams at the same time. And perhaps this is a forfeit, another big loss on my personal dating scoreboard.

Or maybe not. Maybe one can’t be a real dating winner without being a gracious loser first. Part of being a true competitor is, after all, knowing when to take yourself out of the game.

The Movie Column

Dottie Knapp, President of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "Bridesmaids."

I

read a review that began, “Bridesmaids is an unexpectedly funny new comedy.”

Unexpected? Are you kidding me? Did this reviewer see any of the numerous trailers? How could you watch one and not be laughing out loud? The trailer for Bridesmaids made me want to see this movie immediately if not sooner and, so it would seem, did a number of other people. My sister and I went to a Saturday afternoon show thinking we would have the place to ourselves and, “unexpectedly,” the place was packed.

Obviously, the general public is better able to recognize funny when they see it than the aforementioned reviewer.

I expected this movie to be essentially The Hangover with a female cast: raunchy and a bit over the top. In fact a better comparison would be The 40-Year-Old Virgin. It was funny but had genuine moments of caring and compassion.

Relationships were explored. Insecurities were exposed. A person comes of age. There are explosions, some temperamental, some – well, let’s just say, some more earthy (this is a family-friendly weekly). So yes, it can be a bit on the disgusting side, but when you were in

screenplay along with Annie Mumolo. You know Kristen Wiig from SNL, and both she and Mumolo were with the comedy troupe Groundlings. Like Second City, Groundlings is all about improvisation. As I was watching the movie I wished I had a script in hand, because I knew that with these two actresses, as well as Maya Rudolph and Ellie Kemper, a lot of improv was taking place. I’d guess they probably have a whole other movie consisting solely of out-takes.

These women are great, but the scene stealer is Melissa McCarthy (Gilmore Girls, Samantha Who, Mike & Molly). I put those references in because I don’t think you are going to recognize her. She plays every moment completely straight, no matter how ridiculous, which makes her the funniest of the bunch. Go see the movie if only to hear her first introduce herself to Wiig.

Final words: Guys, you’ll love it too. Go. Dottie Knapp is a film workshop presenter and President of the Cape May Film Festival. Her previous presentations included a workshop on Buzz Berkeley as well as humor in the military. An upcoming presentation will include a look at films about baseball!
