Atlantic Hall was purchased in March of 1839 by two brothers from Philadelphia.

When Captain Benjamin McMakin and Captain Joseph McMakin bought it in 1842, the McMakin brothers had the New Atlantic built across Jackson Street. The Cape Island hotel surge continued with the construction of the Columbia House in 1846.

Ramblings From The Editors

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

t’s easy to love Wawa... Good people serving good food and good coffee. However, it’s difficult to love Wawa HQ. First of all, it was practically a crime to shut down the Bank Street location – does anyone else think that place could have been losing money?

Seems hardly likely. Then they imposed draconian conditions on the sale of the property, preventing anyone else from operating a food and drink establishment.

And now... Well, you can’t even park there any more. The 14 spaces have been roped off and threatening signs erected: Park here and you will be towed. The reason?

Construction work in the month of May? Well, May has come and gone, and those parking spaces went unused. What a waste!

Getting anyone on the phone from Wawa was just as difficult as trying to get a straight answer from City Hall (see below), but we were informed it was a “liability issue.” Really? The Wawa has been closed for two years – where was the liability issue then?

It seems to us that Wawa are showing a distinct lack of community spirit. It would be fine if they had someone charge money for the parking spaces, like Swain’s does.

But to prevent them from being used...

That’s just bad form.

WE’VE said it before, but it’s worth repeating. Isn’t it appalling that whenever we call City Hall to ask when those fiendish roadworks on Broadway are going to be finished, they always pass us on to Mott, the engineering company?

Call us crazy, but we think City Hall should have a handle on matters such as this. Telling us that they have no idea when



the works are going to be done is unacceptable. Actually, it’s embarrassing. The fact that the roads were all cut up during Memorial Day weekend is a joke. It’s not enough that the convention hall site is a mighty eyesore – let’s throw in some roadworks on one of the busiest stretches of roads in the city.

It’s ridiculously difficult to get information from City Hall, and that has to change. We recently heard a lamentable story from a local business owner who was having a devilishly hard time trying to get a hold of either City Manager Bruce MacLeod (Bruce, you need to stop hiding behind your desk) or Mayor Ed Mahaney over an important matter that had serious ramifications for his business.

This shouldn’t be hard. This is America, not the old Soviet bloc. The people inside City Hall are public servants, paid by you.

Would be nice if they acted accordingly.

It’s officially summer, dear readers, and what better time for a refresher course on Exit Zero photo etiquette? Our EZ photographers are all around town, snapping photos of happy visitors and locals



enjoying all that Cape May has to offer.

We would just like to point out a couple of things that would make life easier on your friends here at your favorite publication.

Once in a while, we get a complaint that a reader’s name has been misspelled in the paper. Please, please, please keep in mind that we have to work with what is given to us by you, the photo subject. When a little notebook is proffered by a photographer for you to sign your name, bear in mind that one of us staffers must then decipher it for publication ––sometimes easy, sometimes not. Now we realize, probably better than most folks, that sometimes in a dimlylit bar after a few cocktails, it’s hard to keep one’s penmanship in mind. But please try. And if you write “Superman” or “Lady GaGa,” that’s what we have to go on.

Speaking of our talented photographers, we try to get them out to each and every event that comes to our attention, so give us a call, but try to give us as much notice as possible. And don’t forget – your favorite EZ photo is available for sale, in color or black-and-white, and in three sizes: 4x6, 5x7, or 8x10. Give us a call with your credit card information and we’ll make it happen – they make great gifts for out-of-town friends and family.

THE West Cape May Strawberry Festival this past Saturday was a smashing success by all accounts, full of happy browsers and berry treats. Rich Flanegan remarked that it was “a really great day for everyone,” and adds that his wife Diane worked “super hard” to make it all happen. Thanks to Diane (and to all the shoppers who stopped by the Exit Zero booth)! We’ll see you this time next year!

ummer movie season is here, and that changes my dating strategy. Picking a movie that both men and women will enjoy is the age-old problem. For guys, it’s usually something with gratuitous sex, violence, car chases and ammunition use.

You can bet that Thor and X-Men or anything comic-book-based isn’t going to score a lot of points in the romance department.

But does that mean that you have to go to a chick flick? You know what I mean: a gynocentric comedy predicated on the scenario where men are cheating bastards and middle-aged women the goddesses who best them while cementing their sisterhood with Motown-scored makeover montages, vengeful shopping sprees, warmed over Lucy-and-Ethel hijinks and random humiliations visited upon women who are younger and therefore by definition stupid hussies. No, you need to avoid those too.

Let’s go middle of the road. I’m not exactly sure where that is, but I think it’s safe to say that you need to at least discuss it.

Take the movie listings, cross out anything

with excessive testosterone or estrogen, eliminate the kiddie fare and choose from what’s left. By my calculations, that means Pirates of the Caribbean (and how many sequels of this franchise will there be? I’m betting the last one will be called Pirates of the Caribbean: On Golden Pond), which isn’t the greatest date movie ever, but at least offers Johnny Depp for her and Penelope Cruz for you.

Or, skip the theater. Stay home for dinner and a movie. If you can’t cook,

you’re in luck, because there are plenty of restaurants around here that do fabulous take-out. Get something that you have to eat sitting down – not on the couch! – and set a nice table with real dishes and flatware and glasses and candles and everything.

Then get rid of the distractions (phones, Blackberries, kids, etc) and pop a good DVD into the player. Try Stranger Than Fiction – quirky comedy, unusual role for Will Ferrell, and the delectable Maggie Gyllenhaal. It’s cheaper than a night on the town, you won’t have to go far to get more popcorn, and your significant other just might have a better time than if her feet were stuck to week-old Pepsi on the multiplex floor.

Cape May Cooks

A culinary column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle

Y

our local culinary coaches are here once again to cheer you on to quick and tasty meals that you can prepare at home.

This week we’re venturing into cooking for a crowd, with “EZ Flounder Night.” How do you feed 20 or so people for dinner, while not wasting a great beach day in the kitchen? Easy!

We’ll give you simple recipes, like the fish, as well as recipes with “short-cut” ingredients, like canned beans in the festive dish below. We’ll even call them “EZ” so you know you can get them on the table fast.

One of our EZ-est main course solutions happens to be a Cape May specialty – flounder. Do you ever find it as fresh, delicious (and inexpensive!) anywhere else? We don’t.

Attribution from ‘Belle’ – this recipe comes from my brother-in-law’s very large family. All their Jersey Shore vacations include a ‘flounder night’. And ‘recipe’ may be too strong a word. It’s more of a free-form, highly participatory cooking experience. You’ll need: about ½ lb flounder fillets per person flour eggs butter salt and pepper skillet for frying, and oven to keep the already-cooked

fillets warm 3 people – a ‘wet guy’, ‘dry guy’, and a ‘fry guy’ (always a ‘guy thing’ in this family) In a medium-size bowl, the ‘wet guy’ beats several eggs lightly and dips the fillets into the eggs. The ‘dry guy’ has flour, seasoned with salt and pepper to taste, ready for dredging the fillets. Your ‘dry guy’ will need tongs to keep from getting caked in flour.

Meanwhile, the ‘fry guy’ has butter melted in the skillet(s) and does his thing. It only takes about three minutes per side – ready when golden brown. Keep the cooked fillets warm until serving.

My brother-in-law’s family always serves this with white rice and corn, making for a very monochromatic meal. Must have been a ‘60s thing. However, we love this no-frills fish with tasty Southwest-inspired side dishes. Make the ‘fry guy’ share the stove while you prepare: EZ Festive Black Beans Feeds 8-10 45 minutes Serve this recipe as soup, or spoon over rice as a side dish.

1 tsp olive oil 4 cloves of garlic, peeled and smashed 1 large Bermuda or red onion, chopped 2 ribs celery, chopped

In a two-quart saucepan, heat the olive oil and cook the garlic, onion, celery and half the green pepper about five minutes until the onion is translucent.

Add the beans with liquid and the broth if making soup, cumin, oregano, half the parsley, half the cilantro, bay leaves and hot sauce. Simmer uncovered for 20 minutes.

Add salt and pepper to taste, the rest of the parsley and green pepper, the sherry, lime juice and zest. Mix well, turn off the heat and let sit covered about ten minutes. Adjust the seasonings and remove bay leaves.

Serve hot in cups or over rice with a variety of festive garnishes like sour cream, chopped red pepper and scallions, more chopped cilantro, chopped avocado and mango, and lime wedges.

Make this slaw in the morning so it has time to chill.

Southwest Slaw Makes eight large servings 15 minutes, plus at least four hours to chill ½ c olive oil 2 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp orange juice 1 garlic clove, minced ½ tsp ground cumin

½ tsp salt ½ tsp pepper 1 10-oz package shredded cabbage, or broccoli slaw 1 large carrot, coarsely grated (1/2-1 cup) ½ lb jicama (shredded), or ½ c chopped Asian pear 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and diced ¼ c chopped fresh cilantro Whisk together olive oil and next six ingredients. Add the remaining ingredients, toss to coat, cover and chill for at least four hours.

Now you need an ‘EZ’ dessert. The local strawberries should still be available, so grab a box or two and treat your guests to: EZ Strawberry Shortcake 10 minutes strawberries, sliced lemon juice sugar one or two (depending!) angel food cake(s) or pound cake(s) – store-bought to make it truly simple your favorite whipped cream Add a bit of lemon juice and sugar to taste to the strawberries. You’ll want to do this very close to serving time to keep it fresh. Top slices of the cake with the strawberries. Then add a dollop of the whipped cream.

And tell your guests that it was truly no trouble at all!

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

miss the days when Cape May had a princess or two, though I am comforted that we still have some splendid queens. Not that I am a fan of royalty: that notion is always the result of one enterprising, opportunistic brute with a sword, leading to 20 generations of chinless inbreeds who mistake family wealth as a sign they possess some measure of authority. It always ends the same: a demand that the poor people eat cake (or in the case of Cape May’s infamous Queen Gertrude, saltwater taffy) then rapid flight from the palace ahead of a raging mob.

But I am nostalgic for this city’s extinct line, the Jersey Huguenots, who misruled from around 1790 until the mid 1940s, much of that being in secret, of course, as they had learned some lessons from their European cousins, the Romanovs and Tudors, and did not want to be too obvious, lest they find themselves lined up in a dark wood in their monogrammed jammies.

Notable was King Bertie (1867-1899), a genial man who built a fairy tale castle out on The Point (against my counsel), and

overnight saw the whole colossal wondrous confection sink into the sands.

Then there was Princess Graceless, a young lady with such lack of social skills that she was hired out to mediate between parties who loathed each other with such intensity that every other effort had failed to find peace. Princess Graceless would sit down, start casual conversation with the sworn enemies and within minutes they would be united in such dislike of her that they patched up their differences.

And of course Prince(ss) Hubert, a most ambiguous young blade, who surrounded himself with perfumed chaps and chapesses, and indulged his appetites when and with whom he pleased, as the mood took him. For Hubert, “no” meant “yes” and “yes” meant “can my sister join in too?”

Let us not forget The Party King (whose actual name is lost to record), and who turned his coronation party into a weeklong event that segued into his week-longrule bash, which ended with his “first-yearin-power” celebration that tailed off just as his “still here on the throne after a decade” soiree started. In the end he laughed himself to death during his “I’ve Been King For 30 Years” gala event, watching a chimp on a tricycle chase a midget around a maze.

My favorite was Princess Rapunzel, on whom the story was based. She was a comely thing whose jealous mother locked her in the attic of a bungalow just off Lafayette Street, and a prince rescued her using a stepladder. What, you expected a tower and hair 100 feet long, without split ends?! Really, you live in a fantasy land.

Definitely not just your grandmother’s tearoom!

I

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

t is important when waiting tables to appear in control. A waitress must be collected at all times. It doesn’t matter if she’s just been quadruplesat. It doesn’t matter if table seven has waited an hour for escargot. It doesn’t matter if the hostess is crying in the kitchen and the chef just sliced off his thumb. There is never an excuse for appearing frazzled in the dining room. Did you spill cranberry juice on the VIP’s lap? Bring him some club soda for the stain and f lash your best “silly me” smile. Whatever you do, keep from apologizing too much. One too many “I’m sorrys,” and those sweet Cape May guests are going to eat you alive.

This is easier said than done. I use “I’m sorry” more than any other words in my server vocabulary. Sometimes, of course, it’s called for. I once had to tell a guest that I’d lost his credit card somewhere in the dining room. After 25 minutes of searching, I found it in an ice bucket. I know that my guest had a right to be upset, but the more profusely I apologized, the more, ahem, bothered he became.

Other times, I’m not really sorry at all, but the words come spilling out of my mouth anyway. There are moments where I can’t very well say nothing, and “suck it up, sir” will likely get me fired. Last week, a man told me that our chef must have sat on his crab cake because the patty was too “squished.” I offered to bring another crab cake and my guest scoffed at the suggestion. I offered to bring something else altogether and this just upset him more.

Finally, because I was at a loss, I gave this guy the validation he’d been seeking and I said “I’m very sorry.” Then, of course, he all but told me where to stick that squished crab cake.

I say “I’m sorry” all night long. I say it when we run out of strawberry shortcake. I say it when a guest wants a table that is already occupied. I say it when the noise level is too high, I say it when the bar is too full, and I say it when the chef decides to stop serving chicken. Because I’m sorry every day. At every table. Sorry, sorry, sorry.

“I’m sorry” has become one of those things I’m getting sick of hearing myself say, but there aren’t any good synonyms – and believe me when I tell you – I Googled it. “I am apologetic” sounds facetious. “I express regret” is clunky. “I ask for forgiveness” is just plain dumb. Only in the kitchen, where most everyone speaks English as a second language, can I get away with “lo siento.”

So it looks as though I’m stuck with sorry. But, until I learn to be more conservative with my sorrys, perhaps my guests will learn to be more forgiving. Either that, or they’ll find that last line totally offensive. If this is the case, and I hope that’s it not, what can I say except, well, I’m sorry.

I don’t really care what the calendar says when it’s 82 degrees inside my house. The worst part of it is that we have this same argument every year. Get Your Feet Wet At Harbor Fest

This year’s festival features all kinds of aquatic entertainment

his year’s Harbor Fest on June 18 will feature some very special aquatic activities to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Cape May Harbor.

These include a Search and Rescue Demonstration in the harbor at 1pm. The rescue simulation will feature the HH-65C “Dolphin” helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, one of the most advanced helicopters serving the US military today. The demonstration will display the precise teamwork required of the pilots, flight mechanic and rescue swimmer to save boaters in the water. Don’t miss this daring feat of bravery and skill, easily visible from any point along Delaware Avenue near the Nature Center of Cape May. Immediately following the SAR demonstration will be the “Paddle for a Purpose Kayak Regatta,” sponsored by Aqua Trails Kayak Tours. This two-hour noncompetitive tour of Cape May Harbor and the surrounding marsh benefits the Nature Center of Cape May’s Good Neighbor Fund for Coast Guard families. The Good Neigh-

bor Fund was established to provide free tuition for summer nature classes to children from the Coast Guard base.

Ocean activist Margo Pellegrino, who has paddled most of the coastline of the continental United States in the past four years, will once again serve as the regatta’s Grand Marshall. Pellegrino will speak to the Harbor Fest audience before the launch of the regatta.

The registration fee with rental kayak is

$40 for a single kayak and $70 for a double.

The fee is $20 each if you bring your own kayak, and includes a T-shirt, water bottle and refreshments. Participants are asked to check in by 12:30. Any group that would like to make participate can call the Nature Center to make arrangements.

Other nautical adventures during Harbor Fest include water taxi transportation aboard the Skimmer, a 40-foot, flat-bottomed boat that will ferry festival-goers between the Nature Center, the Lobster House and the Harbor View Restaurant.

Also, Jason Kleinschmidt and his Cape May Lady charter fishing boat will treat young fishermen to fishing forays in the harbor, all equipment provided.

All of these adventures and more await visitors to Harbor Fest, which will take place between 10am and 5pm, Saturday, June 18, along the banks of Cape May Harbor on Delaware Avenue and at the Nature Center of Cape May. senior captain Christopher Grace has had no problem on the mound for the LCMR baseball team, notching an 8-2 record with a 2.0 ERA. Grace has been consistently outstanding all year for the Caper Tigers, keeping base runners off balance and off base with his variety of pitches.

“My favorite pitch would have to be the change-up. It keeps batters off balance,” said Grace.

Grace doesn’t get fazed by the tension of pitching in high-pressure games; instead he lives for it. The youngest son of Joe and Frankie Grace of Cape May, Grace began playing baseball at age seven. He is also a true example of a student-athlete, maintaining a 3.8 grade point average. He plans to pursue his dream to play in college and is considering York College and West Chester University, among others.

A scout for the New York Yankees has also been keeping an eye on Grace, hoping to place him on his minor league team. No matter which decision Grace makes regarding his baseball future, he will be “in control of the game,” exactly where he likes to be.

Chapter 2: The Morning After

M

orning came early, as mornings do, and Brendan Quinn, BQ to all who knew him, wanted nothing to do with it. He hated mornings, was never very good at them, and especially hated mornings like this one: dark.

But mostly he hated mornings because they meant one thing to him. Pain. He opened his eyes, the lids full of cobwebby resistance, and immediately noticed the hot ache running through his right shoulder blade and up into his neck. The pain was the first thing he noticed every time he woke up. Usually it rose up from his feet, hummed through his knees and centered nicely in his hips until he got up and rode his bike to Wawa for a coffee. It was the physical toll paid for years spent hefting heavy trays full of food and drink to waiting customers. This upper body pain was really something of a pleasant change.

Vampire City ? From Page 74 when he woke too early, but he knew the sizzle in his neck would prevent that today, so gingerly he rolled to his side and eyed the alarm clock, which glowed back an angry 5:55am.

Now his whole day was screwed. He would never recover from being up so early and knew he’d be dragging ass by 7 o’clock, or about a third of the way through his shift at the restaurant. He was also muddy in a hungover way, though he could recall ingesting no intoxicants the night before.

His eyes were heavy and thick, his brain a clouded mess, his throat raw and sore. He blinked slowly and rolled to his left and the beautiful-auburn haired girl lying there.

Girl? What girl?

Breaking glass.

The mysterious figure running across the street. The figure turning into a beautiful woman, tackling him into the dunes. The explosion, the Beach 4 Theater erupting into flames and smoke.

The bats. Bats!

He bolted upright and shook her. “Come on, we have to go! We have to run!”

Now he remembered, in crystalline detail, the cloud of bats attacking his car and chasing them up Beach Drive, then zig-zagging through town to lose them.

“Move!” he said.

He swung his legs off the bed, knees cracking, and scrambled for his clothes on the floor at his feet.

“Easy,” the girl, Hannah, said and put a hand on his shoulder.

At her touch he went rigid.

Then he also remembered falling deeply in love with her as they criss-crossed Cape May. And while he really loved the show “How I Met Your Mother,” if he married this girl it would be the all-time champ of meeting stories; in an aging Camry, surrounded by swarming bats.

“It’s okay, we’re okay,” she said and scratched at his shoulder with her fingernails.

BQ’s entire body went flush.

She withdrew her hand.

“I don’t remember coming here to my apartment,” he said, shoulders slouching.

She smiled and his heart melted. “You were pretty out of it by then.”

He thought for a moment.

They had driven a circuitous route around Cape May for a half hour or so, hoping to baffle any following bats, before going to his Corgie Street apartment.

Corgie Street was as out-of-theway as it got in the small hamlet of Cape May. The apartment was a spartan second-floor walk-up he’d been living in for four years now. It looked as if a single 31-year-old man occupied it but did not spend many hours there; the paneled walls were bare of art but bore a collection of cult movie and pop culture posters – Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Shaun of the Dead, Goonies, etc. The coffee table was stacked neatly with Entertainment Weeklys.

The kitchen, which was part of the living room, was small but tidy, however the recycling and trash bins were full of take-out boxes of Chinese and empty seltzer bottles. The bedroom they sat in now was the largest room in the apartment, with high windows and a state-of-the-art entertainment center.

But the best part about the bedroom, as BQ figured it, was the glowing auburn-haired beauty occupying it with him.

“I remember,” he said. “I crashed pretty hard.”

“Yeah, well, most people aren’t used to running for their lives from a swarm of bats, so I don’t hold it against you.”

She yawned and tousled her hair.

“Thanks for letting me stay here.”

BQ shrugged. “No problem.

I’m always running women in and out of here. I’m a regular Charlie Sheen.”

She laughed. “Really?”

“No.” In truth, it had been a long time, quite a long time, since his bedroom had known the company of a lady, the scent of a woman. BQ grew depressed.

She sat up and stretched her toned arms over her head and worked her neck round.

BQ was glad to know he wasn’t the only one feeling it today. While she stretched he looked at her in the dim light of early morning. Her hair seemed more red than auburn in the gloom, almost alight. Her face was all sharp angles yet somehow warm and inviting. Her sinewy body rippled under the grey tank top she wore. He scanned her from the waist up, lingering over her womanness. When he got to her face she was returning his gaze.

He flushed and turned away. “Sorry.”

“It’s okay; I’m a half-naked woman in your bed. I’d be surprised if you didn’t take a gander.”

“That’s nice of you, but I’m… I’m not really like that. You’re just…” Beautiful?

Otherworldy? Perfect? “… not like the women I usually have in here. Not that I’m… I mean, not that I’m NOT, but… I mean I’ve had my share of… good grief. I am so awkward.”

She laughed again and it filled the room and BQ’s heart.

“Relax, cowboy.”

“I’ll try.”

In silence they dressed. BQ pulled jeans and a T-shirt over his boxers and skinny torso and pulled on his Nike running shoes.

Hannah shrugged on the black pullover and leggings she’d been wearing. She caught him, again, admiring her form as she did so, but was kind enough not to mention it. She gathered her white robe and stuffed it into her pack, which looked part-backpack/part duffel bag. The pack had appeared out of nowhere once they’d reached the apartment.

Inside it BQ saw a flash of extra clothing, some communication devices, perhaps a GPS, and what looked like a set of railroad spikes. He suspected they had something to do with feminine hygiene, which was now, and forever would remain, dark magic to him.

Dressed, they moved into the kitchen and living room, where Hannah plopped down on a comfy chair and put her black hiking boots on. Very dim grey light spilled lazily through the shades. It looked like a cloudy, possibly

stormy morning, though it was difficult to tell through the closed drapes.

“Coffee?” BQ asked.

“Sure,” she answered.

“French roast? Italian blend? Morning melange?”

“You’re quite the connoisseur.”

“Not really, I got this Keurig machine from the trash heap at the restaurant. Technically, I think I stole it.”

“You bad boy, you.”

“Yeah, well, anyway, you just pop in the cup, press the button, 30 seconds later you got a perfect cup of coffee. I get the little K-cups at Acme. It’s really changed my life.”

“I can understand that. I’ll have a French roast, please. Black” A minute later, they each had a steaming cup of coffee, hers dark, his loaded with cream and sugar.

She sipped. “Mmm… this is nice.”

“Thanks, I slaved over it,” he quipped and hoped she didn’t notice he’d burnt his lip and was squinting back tears.

She did, but was again kind enough not to comment. “It’s not like the coffee I used to drink back home, but it’ll certainly do.”

“Where’s home?”

She pondered his question for a long

She smiled and BQ saw a note of sadness in it.

“It’s… complicated. You have a while?”

For you? All the time in the world, all you want, all I have, is what he thought. What he said was, “I guess.”

She sipped again. “You’re not far off. I grew up in a sort of travelling circus. My… parents owned it, we travelled from town to town, set up our tents for a day, a week, a month, and moved on.”

BQ was agape. “That sounds… awesome!”

She shrugged. “Awesome is a strong word. It was interesting.

We were never in one place for too long, which was tough for a young girl, but I got to see much of the continent.” BQ saw the sadness again. “Some places I’d like to forget.”

BQ knew better than to pry. “So what do you do now?

I assume some kind of pest extermination what with the angry swarm of bats and all.”

She took a slow sip.

“Something like that.”

BQ lowered his cup as he leaned against the sink. “Well, now I’m all curious.”

“It’s… it’s difficult to explain, and not something you need to trouble yourself with. As soon as I can get myself together I’ll get out of your hair,” she smiled wanly at him. “I won’t darken your door again.”

BQ was crestfallen. “Well, you don’t have to go right now…

I don’t have to be to work until four. You can hang here for a

while if you want. If you want.”

She smiled warmly and emptied her cup with a big swallow. “That’s nice of you, but I need to keep moving.”

Taking her cue he dumped his cup into the sink. “Okay.”

He made himself busy washing the cup in the sink as Hannah rose and gathered her things. He scrubbed the mug with some dishwashing liquid and a little brush, his disappointment almost palpable.

She was not dumb and so picked up on his fallen mood.

She set her bag on the couch and approached the sink.

“Don’t forget mine,” she said and nudged his shoulder with the mug.

“Right,” he said and took it without turning.

She felt bad. He’d helped save her from the angry clan of bats, had opened his home to her, gave her a passably decent cup of coffee, and now she was leaving him in the dark, confused. But she knew it was best this way, to keep him as uninformed as possible. The more he knew, the less he’d understand.

“I really appreciate your help,” she said, trying to cajole him back to a good mood. “You really saved my bacon.”

They both knew that, aside from providing a vehicle, it had been Hannah that had dragged them to safety. But that was neither here nor there. BQ had played a significant role in them both still being alive, and for that she was thankful.

BQ flipped off the sink and dried his hands with a paper towel. “So… anything else?”

Hannah chewed on the inside of her lip. She scanned the kitchen and eyed a halfopen cupboard and the brown cardboard box inside it.

“Are those cocoa puff?”

BQ looked up at the cupboard. “Cocoa Krispies, actually.’

“You don’t even want to know how long it’s been since I’ve had a bowl of sugar-filled, processed breakfast cereal.”

“My God,” she moaned and touched his shoulder, “that sounds amazing.”

He grabbed a loaf of Wonderbread from the small breadbox. “Then allow me.”

“Wonderbread,” she said. “My goodness, you sure know how to treat a lady.”

They both laughed. Hannah went back to the chair and BQ put the bread in the toaster and grabbed two bowls from the cabinet.

Five minutes later they sat, slurping their cereal, crunching their toast. It really had been ages since Hannah had sat down for breakfast. And it really had been ages since BQ had had company for breakfast. All in all they felt pretty good. It wouldn’t last.

“That was delicious,” Hannah said, plopped back on the chair and rubbed her belly.

“All finished then?” he said and grabbed their bowls and paper towels holding the last bits of their toast.

“All finished.”

He deposited the bowls in the sink, but went to the window with the toast scraps.

She asked, “What are you doing?”

He shrugged. “I like to feed the birds. I have a little window box. A family of robins moved in last year. They also seem to really

Inside the window-length flower box was indeed a family of robins, but they were eviscerated, torn to bits. Pieces of beak and feather covered the dirt and tulips.

“What the hell?” BQ asked.

Hannah squeezed his shoulder. “Looks like a hungry cat got in there.”

“On the second floor?” he leaned out the window and examined the box.

That’s when a thought occurred to Hannah, a terrible thought.

BQ said, “Jesus Christ…”

Hannah leaned out the window with him and her blood ran cold.

Sitting there, in the dark corner of the

box, were two red-eyed bats, gnawing on the carcasses of the two adult robins. Noticing them, they looked up with a guttural hiss.

“Chweeee!”

“MOVE!” Hannah cried and pulled BQ out of the window. Too late.

As they hit the floor the window crashed open and shattered, bits of wood and glass rained down upon them.

“GO!” she yelled and yanked BQ to his feet and across the living room, back toward the bedroom door. BQ ran for the bedroom, but over his shoulder he saw Hannah grab her pack from the couch. Behind her he saw two shadows. No, animals. Wings. Then they were men. Two large men.

“DON’T LOOK!” she cried and pushed him into the bedroom, locking the door behind them.

“What…”

Behind the door the living room was now all crashing noise and waiting violence.

Hannah unstrapped her bag and grabbed two of the spikes.

“Behind me,” she whispered forcefully.

BQ did not hesitate. “This is going to get ugly.”

The banging began, then the door splintered and flew open.

And it got ugly.

Crafts And Curiosities At The Victorian Fair Shop for antiques and enjoy live music at the Emlen Physick Estate this Sunday

I

f you’re looking for a taste of the fabled Victorian bazaars of old, be sure to visit the 40th annual Victorian Fair this Sunday, June 11. Held on the shaded grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, this yearly open-air fair provides entertainment for all ages. There will be craft and antiques vendors, live music, children’s activities, games, refreshments and more for your amusement. Did we mention that admission is free?

Perhaps the biggest draw at the fair is the multitude of vendors on hand, presenting a wide range of antiques and collectibles. The MAC’s popular “white elephant” table will offer books, trinkets and decorations.

Other vendors include Nostalgic Designs’ ladies shawls and purses, KG Bees’ honey, glazes and beeswax candles, Deja Jewels’ antique trains, sheet music and Victorian jewelry, Shift Sand Sea Glass’ jewelry and Delectable Collectibles’ vintage jewelry, glassware, antiques and prints.

Guests can also enjoy tours of Cape May’s only Victorian house museum beginning at 11:15am. Walk through the Physick Estate

and learn the social customs of the Victorian era – from where to leave your calling card to where the servants slept. The theme for 2011 is “Victorian Health and Fitness,” so be prepared to learn what sporting types were up to more than 100 years ago.

Activity Of The Week

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Smile For The Camera

ime flies. A few years ago, I took my daughters to have their portraits taken on the beach by a professional photographer – M.P. Myers of Cape May. It was simple – I braided their hair, dressed them in white dresses and took them to the beach around sunset. Mary Pat set them at ease, encouraged them to walk, talk to each other and chase waves. The result was a lovely mix of poses – thoughtful smiles, outright giggles, and a shot of them walking, hand in hand, away from the camera. Somehow, this woman who had met them only an hour before had captured the relationship between two sisters who love the beach. Everyone loved the Christmas cards that year!

It’s hard to say what made the photographs so beautiful. After all, they say a good photo is like a good joke – if you have to explain it, it just isn’t that good. I planned to do it again in a year or two, but somehow, six years have gone by, and now, those two “little” girls stand taller than the photographer. No more braids – a trip to Shear Sunsations was essential. The dresses were vetoed in

favor of T-shirts and jeans, and somehow the family dog was invited. The results are just as delightful.

Professional photography may be a luxury, but it is also a treasure. Those moments you want to grab on to and hold with both hands are recalled in portraits.

memories are made, beach shots can be even more meaningful. Large families can be accommodated, as well as individuals, smaller groups or pairs.

Beach sessions require a reservation, and the photographer will advise you on clothing.

Be sure to ask if your pet will be welcome.

Arrangements can usually be made to use the studio as a backup if the weather doesn’t cooperate. A few days after the session, you will visit the studio to make your selections – the photographers are aware that many clients are only in town for a few days. If our experience is any indication, the biggest problem is narrowing down the options.

t’s the last week of Say Goodnight, Gracie at Cape May Stage. As poignant and funny as this play is, it is also the story of immigration at the turn of the last century and how those immigrants created what we now think of as show business by reinventing themselves in our great nation. Bird Droppings

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

B

y the time you read these words it will be all but over.

Spring I mean. All the birds that needed to get north have gotten there. The odd sandpiper or second year male American Redstart that straggles into Cape May in mid-June is the caboose on a long train whose engine pulled into the Cape May station way back in February.

Count ‘em. February, March, April, May, early June. That’s spring in these parts. Never mind the calendar.

But don’t despair. Just because you missed another spectacular spring migration doesn’t mean that there are not lots of birds to see. Fact is Cape May has a wealth of breeding birds.

Big and small, colorful and vocal, too.

Orioles, buntings, herons, egrets, eagles, rails, gulls and terns… If you want to get up close and personal with the birds that call Cape May their summer home, team up with the Cape May Bird Observatory’s core of ace field trip leaders.

What can you expect to see? Depends

on where you go.

If you head out on the Monday morning field trips to the South Cape May Meadows (just off Sunset Boulevard) you are assured of seeing birds like Piping Plover (an endangered species), Least Tern (another endangered species) plus Snowy Egret, Great Egret and maybe even a Least Bittern or Bald Eagle.

Least Bittern are herons about the size of a coffee mug that breed in the meadows.

Bald Eagles, who spend much of their lives relieving Osprey of their fish, have a nest south of the Cape May Canal.

If you go to say, Higbee Beach, you stand a very good chance of running into Blue Grosbeak and Indigo Bunting and Yellow-breasted Chat.

Indigo Buntings look like sapphires on wings. Blue Grosbeaks looks like sapphires on wings with ruby chevrons running across the shoulder. Yellow-breasted Chat?

Well, it kind of looks like a tanager but it’s classed as a warbler and it makes about the most amazing array of sounds you are likely to hear.

About two hundred years ago people called it “The Raucous Polyglot” – an apt name for a really bizarre bird.

The salt marshes are alive with herons and egrets. One hundred years ago, the birds were rare in New Jersey. Now, after a century of conservation, the birds are once again common.

It’s funny, really, but when people think of wildlife they think of places like Florida and Alaska. The truth is that New Jersey’s wildlife riches are equal to any place. We have natural spectacles here that other celebrated states only dream of offering visitors. Great concentrations of migrating shorebirds, Purple Martins, songbirds and birds of prey.

No, of course not now. It’s summer. The birds have spread out. Apportioned themselves across the northern hemisphere.

Taken advantage of seasonal warmth and a super abundance of food.

Okay, I guess you can find a pretty good concentration of Laughing Gulls breeding locally. In fact, the largest concentration of breeding Laughing Gulls in the world is found in the marshes behind Stone Harbor.

This is just one of the spectacles you’ll see on one of our CMBO-sponsored birding by boat trips.

Look for a Least Bittern in the meadows.

Come June, the first southbound birds enter Cape May airspace and the focus of the CMBO’s walks shifts. Want to experience yourself what I’m writing about? A CMBO field trip is in your future.

The Dating Column

Stella Dixon’s take on romance on old Cape Island

am a person who is always afraid of missing out, so I’ll say yes to just about anything. I once drove to Quitman, Georgia for the weekend just because a friend of mine said that the boiled peanuts are delicious there. And I don’t even like peanuts.

At least now I can say that I’ve seen Quitman, Georgia. Trust me when I tell you, it’s not a thrilling place. Eating boiled peanuts (or “goober peas,” as the locals call them) is just about the only thing to do there. But if I hadn’t gone, I’d always worry that I missed out on something special. I’m the same way when it comes to dating – always afraid of missing out.

This is why, when a friend or a coworker or even a total stranger offers to set me up, I can’t say no. No matter how many terrible blind dates I’ve been on, I just won’t learn my lesson. I manage to convince myself that the next date could be THE date – the one with the man who is masculine but not macho, assertive but not aggressive, protective but not possessive, simple but not simple-minded.

I’ve had no luck finding this guy on a blind

date, which is surprising when you consider just how many blind dates I go on. This week alone, three people said they know someone who is “just right” for me. One of these people even went so far as to approach me at a wake, while we waited to pay our respects at the casket.

If there is anything more depressing than a bad blind date, that would be finding out what other people think I’d find appealing. My friend Kate said that I need a rugged man. A

manly man. A guy’s guy. A Neanderthal. The Cape May bachelor Kate picked for me got drunk at dinner and said that he would keep me in mind for the “overnight guest list.”

A former boss told me that I need a guy who is intellectually stimulating. I agreed to a date with the professor of biology she picked out for me. He was smart, for sure. So smart, however, that he spent the evening correcting my grammar and looking appalled because I’d never read Dante’s Inferno.

Then there was the surfer guy my aunt thought I’d love. He referred to me as “bro” and told me that his profession is “imaginationist, dude.”

And yet, for some reason, I keep agreeing to blind dates. They say you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince. I say you have to meet a lot of goober peas – men who just aren’t worth the drive – before you can even know what it is you’re looking for, and what it is you’re willing to miss out on. I have faith that I’ll figure all this out eventually, maybe even on my next blind date. After all, if what they say is true, love is most definitely blind.

The Movie Column

Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "Incendies."

F

or those of us in Cape May, this week's review might be a Netflix alert, because even though this film is currently in theaters, it's not widespread. The film is Incendies (a French word meaning "scorched"). This movie travels from Canada across the globe while telling the story of twins who find out upon their mother's death that their father is alive and they have a brother they didn't know existed. Their mother does not want to be buried until the father and brother are found and given special notes she has written.

The story then begins to unfold years ago as we see the mother lose her infant son, presumably killed in the war-torn country in which they live. The film travels from the past to present as the mother's daughter, one of the twins – the other is a son – travels to find the father she thought was dead and brother she never knew she had.

For a film that so vividly depicts a warravaged country, it is beautifully shot. The story sometimes cuts so quickly from past to present that the viewer can lose ground on what's happening and when. But when you get your

"Incendies" crosses the globe to narrate a story of family ties and the ugliness of war. footing again, you're in awe of the amazing storytelling behind this film. It may be sluggish in its first half, but when you begin to see the story unravel you're amazed at how it's told.

"Difficult to watch," might be one way to describe this film, but "important to watch" is another. This is especially true if you're a fan

of high-quality, suspenseful writing. The film is based on a stage play of the same name by Wajdi Mouawad.

The movie was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at this year's Oscars but is only now being placed in distribution – and even now it's mostly in art houses. And it's no wonder. There are no superheroes in this film, no car chases or pirates or zany antics. This is a disturbing story on many fronts, and I'm not one who likes to be so profoundly disturbed, but as the credits roll you're amazed at how the film ended. While it's woven awkwardly at times this film presents a brilliant story, well acted, and one that you'll find yourself talking about (having to talk about, really) to someone.
