The Police Blotter
St. Louis, Missouri - A woman told police that after informing her bank of stolen checks, she discovered that one of them was used to pay for pizza at her apartment during a party she had hosted. The suspect, a party guest, was the boyfriend of a friend of the victim.
Classic Quotations
A Story From The Past “Hating the Yankees is as American as pizza pie, unwed mothers, and cheating on your taxes.” Mike Royko “Ideas are like pizza dough, made to be tossed around.” Anna Quindlen “The perfect lover is one who turns into a pizza at 4:00 am.” Charles Pierce “Pizza is a lot like sex. When it’s good, it’s really good. When it’s bad, it’s still pretty good.” Author Unknown “Without question, he greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. The wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.” Dave Barry “There’s a pizza place near me that sells only slices. In the back there’s a guy tossing triangles in the air.” Stephen Wright
Weird Word Of The Week
PLACENTA Not just a name for afterbirth, placenta is also the name for an ancient Roman version of pizza. This “pizza” consisted of sheets of flour dough, similar to modern phyllo dough, topped with cheese and honey and flavored with bay leaves.
Don Pocher
“on Saturday nights, tables were cleared from the Stockton hotel dining room, the floor smeared with bees-wax, Hen Prouty came with his fiddle and cottagers came to join hotel guests in a dance. There was no thought of cliques – even introductions were dispensed with. Ordinary rowdies were not drawn to Cape May and our dollar aristocracy had not arrived, so no one had reason to shun anyone. Every Summer meant the reconvening of a happy family.” New York Times July 28, 1928

Random Fact Of The Week
popular pizza toppings in Japan are squid and a mayonnaise, potato and bacon mixture. In India, it’s pickled ginger, minced mutton and tofu. Brazilians prefer peas, and Russians serve pizza covered in a mix of sardines, tuna, mackerel, salmon and onions.
Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “It’s easier to resist at the beginning than at the end.” J Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a Cape May Roll. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors
G
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends
ENTLE readers, prepare for an important administrative announcement: We are moving our publication delivery day back to Thursday. Our deadlines will remain the same, advertiser friends. Why? Because our paper is so popular that by the time the visitors come for the weekend there isn’t a single copy to be found, and that isn’t good. It’s important for both locals AND visitors to share the love. This will take effect as of THURSDAY, JUNE 30 – plenty of time to mark your calendars, so try to avoid popping in to Exit Zero Global Headquarters at any time on Wednesday the 29th seeking your weekly fix. Not that popping into the store is a bad idea – we’ve got lots of great new merchandise for the summer: outback hats (great for the beach), as well as ladies’ board shorts, which dry in a snap, and windbreakers emblazoned with the EZ logo. Grab a copy of the new Cool Cape May and you’ll be set. Oh, and advertisers: this is the perfect time to sign up for the 2012 Cool Cape May while you’re at it. Speaking of checking things out, you may have noticed that the former Dock Mike’s has moved dangerously close to EZ HQ and is now in the former Mangia Mangia location. The former Dock Mike’s is now Wallace’s Harborside Café, and if the Wallace name sounds familiar, it should – they are the folks of Wallace’s Whaler’s Cove fame. We hear they have big plans for expansion this winter, but in the meantime, stop in for a bite. In other area restaurant news, congratulations to Union Park’s John Schatz and Bob Dimitrov, who recently
purchased the Pacific Grill in Wildwood. We’d wish them luck, but with talent like that, who needs luck? Last week we reported on the old Broad Street Wawa that has now shuttered its parking spaces in addition to its doors and windows. We speculated that the lot had been closed for liability issues. But, we wondered, why now? While the signs told motorists not to park, they had gone unenforced for nearly two years. Well, it seems we were right about the liability issues. The Exit Zero team received a phone call this week from Marylou Cook, a 68-year-old woman who works on the Washington Street Mall and didn’t seem too happy that we were arguing for the lot remaining open for public use. Marylou was walking home from work and tripped over an exposed pipe on the Wawa property. It seems the pipe had been used for irrigation, and in the two years since the Wawa closed the pipe had made its way to the surface. In the end Marylou went to the hospital where she received a CAT scan that turned up negative. She did receive a cortisone shot for an existing shoulder injury that the fall
aggravated and ended up with two black eyes. Marylou says the black eyes kept her from working for a week, and she called up Wawa to complain. She was supposed to receive restitution for her lost week of work, but has not received anything thus far. Regardless of the condition of the property, it isn’t really Wawa’s fault that Marylou fell (though we’re very sorry that she did). A person who falls through the skylight of a building while stealing floodlights shouldn’t be able to sue for damages (Bodine v. Enterprise High School), nor should you able to win $2.86 million from McDonald’s because you spilled coffee on yourself (Liebeck v. McDonald’s Restaurants). People shouldn’t blame others for falling during a burglary, spilling the hot coffee they ordered or the actions of their own two feet. But, these lawsuits happen, so when someone calls Wawa saying, “I tripped and fell on your property,” Wawa has no choice but to shut the property off to everyone. Case closed – except, why do the Wawa signs says the parking spots are closed off because of “renovations”? Folks in Cleveland, Ohio will get an up-close and personal look at our fair town, courtesy of our friends at the Chamber, who arranged for a film crew from Fox affiliate WJW-8 to film segments all over Cape May this week for their show New Day Cleveland. Cape May is the latest in a long list of cities and towns they’ve has visited, including New York City, Boston, Las Vegas and Chicago, among others. A segment was also filmed here at EZ (just the next step in our quest for world domination).

Kafka And Comedy At Cape May Stage “The Understudy” opens this Thursday at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse
H
ave you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of a Broadway play? Well, wonder no more – up next from the folks at Cape May Stage is a production of the hilarious The Understudy, written by Theresa Rebeck. Originally produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company, critics hailed it as one of the funniest plays of the 2009 season. Directed for Cape May Stage by Roy Steinberg, The Understudy stars G.R. Johnson as Harry, Kristen Calgaro as Roxanne and Lucas Darnell as Jake, and opens on Thursday, June 23 at 8pm at the beautiful Robert Shackleton Playhouse on Bank and Lafayette streets. Rebeck manages to achieve the astounding feat of melding Kafka with comedy in this backstage farce. Things couldn’t be better for Harry, a smug, overpaid and untalented movie action star, when he is cast in Kafka’s fictitious masterpiece, The Castle – until the arrival of Jake, his understudy. Harry lets Jake know immediately exactly where he stands in the pecking order. Add the lovesick Roxanne, a
Luke Darnell, Kirsten Calgaro and G.R. Johnson will star in “The Understudy.” charming but harried stage manager (who happens to have been jilted two weeks before her wedding to Jake) and the Kafka-esque triangle is complete. Can Roxanne prevent a battle royale from developing between the two rival actors? Will the show go on? One of the most produced female playwrights in America, the Pulitzer Prizenominated Rebeck draws on her own show business career as fodder for the play. “You
could say it’s about theater,” Rebeck says, also well-known for her work on television’s Law & Order. “And it is – how a play gets put on and what’s behind it. But it’s also about more. A lot of what happens in show business is just horrible, and with next to no reason for it. Your life is out of your control.” Harry’s hilarious and frustrating battle with dramatic fulfillment is pitted perfectly against the metaphor of the understudy. Sharing the stage with biting dramatics and on-the-nose satire, The Understudy is highspirited camp and laugh-out-loud funny. Cape May Stage is South Jersey’s #1 professional Equity Theater, and has also been voted one of the top three theater companies in the state. They are committed to providing a high-quality, award-winning professional theater experience in the intimate setting of the beautifully restored Robert Shackleton Playhouse. Check their website at capemaystage.com for more information about subscribing, upcoming production schedules, the Second Stage Series, the Dinner & A Show program, and much more.

:0 SATURDAYS P.M.0 Name: Lisa Senape Workplace: Cape May Winery Age: 45, unless I can be 25. Hometown: Born and raised in Allentown, PA, currently I live in Cape May. How long have you worked here? Six years. Best thing about the job? That I get to work in such a beautiful place. Let’s face it, it’s gorgeous here. You can’t ask for more than that. What do you recommend here? I recommend visiting with a picnic and just enjoying a bottle of wine on the beautiful grounds. What’s your OTHER dream job? Running a vineyard in Italy, and then maybe marrying the Italian man who owns it. Favorite thing about Cape May? This is going to sound corny. I’m not a beach person – I’ve just always been drawn to Cape May’s quaint environment and its beautiful architecture. Interview by Kate Chadwick Want to nominate an employee of the week? Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about pizza. This week’s winner is Jackson, 11, from West Orange, New Jersey. We found Jackson on the Washington Street Mall. Here are his answers to our piercing questions: What is your favorite kind of pizza? Pepperoni How many slices are in a large pie? Eight Do you fold your pizza to eat it? Always! Jackson wins a four passes to Morey’s Piers for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! Chance Meetings
They finally meet! Everett Chance goes for date with Stella Dixon – see her take on page 111.
W
orlds have collided. The long-awaited has happened. The stars are aligned in the heavens, and Stella Dixon and I
went to dinner. We ate at Panico’s, the refurbished church on Broadway in West Cape May. I’m always surprised that many Cape Mayans haven’t made the trek to dine there, but clearly the smart folks have, since I saw several friends there. And it’s worth the journey for this: Panico’s kiwi and strawberry salad, on spinach with glazed walnuts, is the single best salad I’ve ever had (Stella had it too, and can back me up). They have delicious bread baked in their pizza oven. Stella had the swordfish, I chose the veal saltimbocca, and we both cleaned our plates. Top it off with a shared cannoli, and the food could hardly have been better. I’ve eaten at Panico’s on previous occasions, and this meal confirmed it as one of my favorites, with everything from pizza to pasta to suit any taste. Here’s what you should know about Stella: she’s stunningly beautiful, absolutely
whipsmart, tasteful, elegant, talented and entirely out of my league. I’ll admit that from the start; she’s way more than I can handle. I wasn’t harboring any secret hopes that she and I would become the First Couple of Cape May. But it’s still healthy for someone like me to stretch myself, and to try to elevate into Stella’s orbit. There’s a Sara Hickman song called “Woman Waiting To Happen,” that reminds me of Stella. She’s so close to launching
herself into an amazing life. She just needs to catch one lucky break, get a career started, and she’ll be blindingly white hot. But until that happens, I think she’s dealing with a lot of frustration. For a guy, there’s something settling about dating a woman who’s already got a handle on life. She’s not hopping from job to job, leaping from place to place, living with Mom and Dad, thinking about her next move (and whether or not you’re part of it). Stella is waiting to happen, and when she does she’ll be brilliant, but until then it’s hard to get close to her without getting burned. I don’t want to be the guy attempting to start something with her when everything in her life gels, and she moves on. For now, I’ll adore her from a safe distance. Join me for dinner, won’t you? Send an email to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. I might not be in your league, but I’ll still bring my A game.

Cape May Cooks
A culinary column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle
S
ummer is Belle’s favorite season: berry season, that is. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries... The seasonal berry parade is just beginning – if you haven’t been feasting on strawberries, we must ask you, why not? Hold on to these recipes as we roll through summer. Your local cooks thought it appropriate to devote an entire column to the blueberry. After all, not far to our north in Atlantic County is Hammonton, New Jersey – the Blueberry Capital of the World. Wherever you live, check the label on the package in your local market. Hammonton, right? You can start the day with blueberries (see the first two recipes below), and crown the evening meal with a gazillion different blueberry desserts. We’ll suggest only three – all of them ‘berry EZ’. OK – no more berry jokes. EZ Blueberry Pancakes with Cape May Blueberry Sauce 5 minutes per batch Bisquick milk eggs cooking spray New Jersey blueberries, washed Make pancake batter according to directions and pour onto hot greased griddle – whatever size you like. Dot with
blueberries, the more the better! Cook until bubbles break on surface. Turn and cook until bottoms are golden. Keep pancakes in low oven until you’ve made enough for your crowd. Serve with Cape May Blueberry Sauce, below.
* Best Crab Soup on the East Coast * Outdoor Seating - Free Parking Family Affordable • Vegetarian & Gluten Free Friendly
EZ Cape May Blueberry Sauce 10 minutes yields 1 cup 1 dry pint New Jersey blueberries, washed ¼ c water 1 tbsp beach plum jelly from local stands Place ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Cook over medium heat 7-10 minutes until sauce has thickened slightly. Serve hot over pancakes, waffles or French toast, or cold over ice cream or yogurt. Breakfast Smoothie 5 minutes 2-3 servings 1 banana, cut up 3/4 c blueberries 3/4 c any other fruit you like – strawberries, sliced peaches, etc. 1 c plain yogurt (we like the thickness of Greek-style) 1 c fruit yogurt (any berry is good) ½ c orange juice 1 c milk (more if you prefer a less thick smoothie) Place all the ingredients in a

blender, starting on slow speed and gradually increasing. Blend for a minute or two, carefully scraping down the sides of the blender to mix all ingredients. According to Joe Colanero, in his fine book Down Jersey Cooking, Italian immigrant field workers bussed in from Philadelphia created the following delicious dessert. Another Hammonton factoid: it has one of the highest percentages of residents of Italian ancestry of any municipality in the US. Blueberry and Ricotta Dessert New Jersey blueberries, washed ricotta cheese honey from local farms fresh black pepper Pass around the table separate bowls of blueberries and ricotta. Eaters should assemble their own desserts, topping spoonfuls of the ricotta with the berries. Pass the honey for drizzling and the pepper mill, grind to taste. Hold on to this next recipe all summer, and use it when Jersey peaches appear. They work equally well as blueberries. Or go crazy and mix the two! Blueberry Surprise 1 hour 6-8 servings ½ c butter 1 c all-purpose flour 1 ¼ c sugar, divided 1/8 tsp salt 2 tsp baking powder 1 c milk 2 c fresh Jersey blueberries, washed and drained ¼ c lemon juice Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Melt the butter in an 8-inch square pan. In a medium size bowl, combine one cup of the sugar, flour, salt and baking powder. Stir in milk and blueberries. Pour the batter over the melted butter. Combine the lemon juice with the ¼ cup
reserved sugar and pour slowly and evenly over the batter. Bake for 45-60 minutes, until the top is golden. EZ Blueberry Beach Plum Pie 30 minutes Serves 6-8 1 frozen pie crust, Oronoke if available 2 dry pints blueberries from local stands, washed and drained ½ cup beach plum jelly from local stands ¼ c water Bake the pie crust according to directions and cool. In a small pot, heat the jelly with the water over a low flame until it melts, about five minutes. Put the berries in a bowl and add the jelly, pouring through a strainer and dissolving any lumps with a spoon. Toss the berries in the beach plum glaze until mixed, then pour into the pie crust creating a mound in the center. Serve with ice cream.
So, if this isn’t enough for you, get in your car and go pick some berries in the Pine Barrens. And be sure to keep an eye out for that great Jersey Blues® Blueberry Iced Tea introduced by the Blueberry Grower Network, Rutgers University and the NJ Farm Bureau two years ago. It was brought to market through NJ farm stands and then disappeared. If it’s back, don’t miss it. And, if not, make your own blueberry cocktail. Pop some fresh blueberries into ice cube trays and slip them in a glass of iced tea mixed with blueberry juice, a shot of vodka and some lemon wedges.

The Old Fogey
D
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
id you know that the original name for “pizza” was “piecea”? Of course not, but now you do, and soon you will know exactly why. It all began, dear hearts, when I was stationed in Italy during WWII, and was parachuted into the mountains to capture Mussolini and bring an end to Italy’s insane collaboration with the Nazis. I did not go alone: the Young Albert of the day was also dropped in: the special ops chaps had designed a neat little harness and ‘chute for him (along with an ingenious automatic machine-pistol affixed to a chest strap that fired whenever he barked. This was a top success and resulted in several dozens of enemy soldiers being wounded about the ankles, until the day we were to meet General Patton and be presented with medals, and a rabbit bolted from beneath a bush. Well, Albert could not resist a rabbit, and got over-excited. I will spare you the details, except to say that he emptied a 30-round magazine in under ten seconds, hitting just about everything except for the damnable
rabbit. One round even hit Patton’s jacket, fortunately glancing off a star and ricocheting into a shell-shocked soldier the general was about to slap. There were no medals for us that day…). We landed safely, and had been hiding for a few days in dense brush, waiting to ambush Il Duce, when we spotted an Italian Army patrol. I believe they were looking for us, but in typical Italian fashion, they had paused to spruce up their uniforms, cook and write letters to their mothers. There
was a lovely hotpot cooking over the fire, and the smell was most appetizing. So, of course, I vaulted over the outcrop I was spying from, and landed in the open turret of a tank they had been riding on, while Albert yipped and fired simultaneously down on them. I was keen not to destroy lunch, and so rather than fire the tank gun into them, I merely started the engine and drove over the lot of them. I had intended to brake short of the cooking pot but my foot became tangled in a gilded chain and medallion of The Virgin Mary that was hanging from the steering column and I overshot. When I climbed out, I was horrified to find the contents of the pot had been flattened by the tank treads, and now resembled nothing more than a large round flat ménage of ingredients. “Why,” I raged at the tank, “you piece a s**t!”, which was overheard by some of my backup rangers as they arrived on scene. “Doesn’t LOOK like s**t, Sarge,” one said, sniffing approvingly at the flattened meal. “What did you call it? A ‘pizza’?” And thus was a legend born …

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone
eginnings can be exciting, especially when we’re beginning something we feel passionately about. Last week, I went to dinner at one of Cape May’s fine restaurants, and my waiter, I’m convinced, was new. A restaurant beginner. He was animated as he described the ravioli dish. His eyes got wide as he opened my bottle of wine. “This one is awesome!” he said. Then he described for me the lovely wedding party he’d waited on earlier, the delicious smell of fresh-from-the-oven bread, and the beautiful Cape May weather. I decided he was far too chatty, too smiley, too happy to have been a seasoned server… right? Spend enough time taking orders from grumpy guests, clearing used tissues from empty tables, and working holiday weekends while the rest of the world barbeques, and all that friendly enthusiasm will get beaten right out of you. It’s the same with anything – a new job, a new hobby, even a new relationship. Stick with it long enough and the magic is bound to fade. Passion subsides. The puppy
that was cute and cuddly at the pound will eventually poop in your bed. The man who was cute and cuddly when you met will leave his dirty underwear around the house and start drinking straight from the milk container. And that serving job that was supposed to mean cash-in-hand and free crème brulee at the end of every night, you soon find out, also means dealing with a needy public and sporting a long sleeved uniform blouse in 90 degree heat. And yet, given the chance, I wouldn’t go back. Sure, my job is a little old hat these days, not a great deal of excitement. I’m held more accountable for mistakes than when I was learning the ropes, and cowork-
ers are comfortable enough now to tell me when I’m being a whiny brat, no sugarcoating. But I’m comfortable now, too. It’s easy to look back at a beginning with a false sense of nostalgia. It’s the reason we start stories with the line: “Back in my day…” But the truth is, “back in my day” wasn’t always as great as we remember. Take my first week waiting tables, for example. I accidentally paid for seven people’s dinners with my own tip money because of a terrible computer error I didn’t realize I was making. And, because I was so under-qualified for the job, my miffed coworkers assumed I must have been sleeping with the chef. It was a rough start. So maybe that friendly, chatty server isn’t new at all. Maybe he’s been waiting tables – and loving it – for years. Maybe he’s simply figured out that the secret to keeping the passion alive is enjoying life – jobs, hobbies, relationships – for what they are, when they are. After all, old and comfortable can be just as wonderful as new and exciting. Once you realize that, even a few used tissues won’t bring you down.

Pizza Must Haves
The finest things from the shops of this charmed city... by Kate Chadwick
A Breakfast Sandwich From Cappy’s Pizza
Brick Oven Pizza From Lucky Bones
A Slice Of Heaven From Blue Moon Pizza
Man cannot live by pizza alone. Cappy’s is open at 8am, seven days a week, ready to hook you up with a yummy and BIG breakfast sandwich to start your day off right. They’re made with two eggs, lots of melted cheese, and your choice of breakfast meats. $3.50-$5. (And of course come back later for some outstanding pizza!) 1432 Texas Avenue, 609-898-8885.
Sure, Lucky Bones has excellent lunches and dinners, to-die-for nachos, not to mention great cocktails, beers and wines. But if you haven’t tried their brick-oven pizza, you are doing yourself a grave disservice. We here at EZ Global HQ are especially partial to the arugula and prosciutto – to know it is to love it. 1200 Route 109, 609-884-2663, www. luckybonesgrille.com.
When you just want to grab a slice on your way from the beach, but aren’t sure what you want, Blue Moon is the place, with a dizzying selection of pizza slices at the ready. Try barbecue or Buffalo chicken, bruschetta, or – YUM – kill two birds with one stone with a slice of cheesesteak pizza. Prices vary: $2.60-3.75. 301 Beach Avenue, 609-884-1170.
Gourmet Pizza From Italiano’s
Pasta From Vincenzo’s Little Italy
Pizza Dog Treat From Dog Days
Now for something completely different – how about a Verde: a white pizza with broccoli, ricotta cheese, fresh garlic and olive oil? Or a Greek pizza: tomato, onions, black olives, feta and mozzarella. Bring home a taco pizza for dinner after work – snappy taco sauce, ground beef, lettuce, tomato, onions and sour cream. 600 Park Boulevard, 609-898-2200.
Italian doesn’t always mean pizza, but you can get great pizza here, too! Bring the family, sit down and relax with one of their mouthwatering pasta dishes. Their pescatore is a local favorite, featuring mussels, shrimp, scallops, clams and calamari in a homemade red sauce – delicious! Open daily, eat in or take out. 3704 Bayshore Road, 609-889-6610.
Don’t forget, our canine friends enjoy a little pizza once in a while too. This version, however, is much better for them than the tomato and cheese kind. A peanut-butter and whole wheat flour biscuit topped with a yogurt frosting, it sounds good enough to eat. Taste-tested and approved by the newest EZ dog, Odin, and a bargain at $2. 315 Ocean Street, Washington Commons, 609-898-0001.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady At some recent work functions, my boss has had one or two glasses of wine too many. She drinks just enough so that people are noticing that she’s acting funny. Besides the fact that she’s damaging our business’ image, I don’t want her driving drunk. But I also don’t want to lose my job if I take her keys and put her into a cab. Is there a right answer here? – Employee Dear Employee That depends upon your definition of “right.” While the Answer Lady can certainly understand how terrible you would feel if you lost your job, imagine how much worse you would feel if you knowingly let your boss get behind the wheel while intoxicated and she killed someone, or herself. It sounds like one of those ‘couldn’t happen to me’ situations, but it happens.
Wise answers to perplexing questions
Of course, that’s easy for the Answer Lady to say, while you visualize wrestling the keys from the drunken woman who signs your paycheck, as opposed to wrestling them from a buddy or a relative. In the boss situation, find safety in numbers. Approach a couple of trusted coworkers and say ‘Hey, I think Margo’s had one too many. Can you guys back me up when I tell her I’m calling Aart’s Taxi?’ Another option is to calmly and gently inform Margo that you will drive her home, in her own car, and have a
coworker follow you in your car. This way, Margo can be safely deposited at her doorstep, and her car will be there in the morning. Worst case scenario, if she absolutely insists upon leaving on her own, call the police and report her – anonymously, if you want – the instant she leaves the building. Perhaps a DUI will force her to address her reckless behavior. Dear Answer Lady I have a crush on a pizza delivery guy – there’s just something about him. I’ve been ordering pizza twice a week just so I can say hi to him, but I don’t have the nerve to ask him out. What should I do? I can’t keep eating like this. – Pizza’d Out Dear Pizza’d The Answer Lady suggests you go to his place of business and dine there, on a slow night, perhaps a Tuesday. If he’s not busy, and you are sitting there eating, perhaps ONE of you will work up the nerve to start a conversation, which is less likely to occur when he’s standing in your doorway with the car running. (Note: Excess pizzas cheerfully accepted at EZ Global Headquarters.)

T
This year’s festival features all kinds of aquatic entertainment, exhibits, demonstrations and more
his year’s Harbor Fest on June 17 and 18 will feature some very special activities and demonstrations to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Cape May Harbor. These include a Search and Rescue Demonstration in the harbor at 1pm. The rescue simulation will feature the HH-65C “Dolphin” helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, one of the most advanced helicopters serving the US military today. Don’t miss this daring feat of bravery and skill, easily visible from any point along Delaware Avenue near the Nature Center of Cape May. Immediately following the SAR demonstration will be the “Paddle for a Purpose Kayak Regatta,” sponsored by Aqua Trails Kayak Tours. This two-hour noncompetitive tour of Cape May Harbor and the surrounding marsh benefits the Nature Center of Cape May’s Good Neighbor Fund for Coast Guard families. The Good Neighbor Fund was established to provide free tuition for summer nature classes to children from the Coast Guard base.
The registration fee with rental kayak is $40 for a single kayak and $70 for a double. The fee is $20 each if you bring your own kayak, and includes a T-shirt, water bottle and refreshments. Participants are asked to check in by 12:30. Any group that would like to participate can call the Nature Center to make arrangements. Other nautical adventures during Harbor Fest include water taxi transportation aboard the Skimmer, a 40-foot, flat-bot-
tomed boat that will ferry festival-goers between the Nature Center, the Lobster House and the Harbor View Restaurant. Jason Kleinschmidt and his Cape May Lady charter fishing boat will also treat young fishermen to fishing forays in the harbor, all equipment provided. In addition, visitors can expect an interactive exhibit on the history of commercial fishing and Cape May Harbor, a squid dissection, a Blessing of the Waters at the Fisherman’s Memorial, Rutgers science exhibits, birding from the Nature Center and wharf tours hosted by the Lobster House. All of these adventures and more await visitors to Harbor Fest, which will take place between 10am and 5pm, June 17 and 18, along the banks of Cape May Harbor on Delaware Avenue and at the Nature Center of Cape May. Jackson Sole isn’t following in brother Tyler’s footsteps; he’s making his own. The sophomore wrestles, plays football and lacrosse, and recently broke LCMR’s lacrosse ground ball record, previously held by Kyle Boyle, picking up 264 ground balls. “It feels pretty good to break the record as a sophomore,” Sole said. Jackson isn’t the only talent in his family. His brother, senior Tyler, plays lacrosse and football, and mother, Betsy, is a LCMR Hall of Famer for field hockey. “I do feel pressure,” Sole said of his family’s athletic history. “I try to work harder and do my best.” He is also the first underclassmen to be selected “Athlete of the Week,” which he described as an “honor.” His wants to break the faceoff record, and he hopes to be lacrosse squad captain next year. “I want the team to be more disciplined in practice and on the game field,” Sole said. With an attitude like that, Jackson Sole is on his way to achieving his goals and making it to the top. PHOTO and story by Susie booth

Winged invaders terrorize Cape May in a chilling new installment of Terry O’Brien’s short story Chapter 3: Revelation

RENDAN Quinn cinched in as close to Hannah as he could. Five minutes ago this would have sent him to the edge of ecstasy. At the moment, he was mostly hoping not to wet himself. “Stay close…” she whispered. He felt her body go electric. Her arms tensed and relaxed, tensed and relaxed. She rolled her neck. He felt her take long, slow, deep breaths, keeping herself calm. “Close…” she whispered. “Close…” BQ echoed. She stood in a protective crouch like a mother cub guarding her young. The metal spikes gleamed dully in her hands. BQ had spied them earlier in her bag and wondered what they could be. He could see now they were instruments of death: cold metal daggers fitted with wooden handles and leather straps. “Oh Jesus…” he hissed as the realization

Vampire City ? From Page 74 came to him in that moment. A swarm of angry bats, the metal spikes, the shredded robins in the window box, the bats that turned into men… vampires. BQ and Hannah were trapped in his bedroom with two vampires in his living room. BAMBAMBAM! The pounding nearly rattled the door off its hinges. BAMBAMBAM! It was deafening and BQ’s heart leapt. “Easy…” she said as she felt him jump. BABAMBAM! With a sharp crack the door splintered and flew out of the jamb. “Follow my lead…” she hissed over her shoulder at BQ, who nodded vigorously. The bedroom was still gloomy, heavy with morning. The doorway was empty. “Hannah…” came a terrible, dead voice from the dark living room. “Hannah, please…” came the second voice, just as dead. “Why must you make it so difficult….” Hannah quickly turned and took BQ’s face in her hands. “Ignore them,” she said, “and listen to me.” BQ nodded feebly. “When I move, you move. Understand?” Another nod. Hannah nodded back, hoped it was reassuring, sure it was not. “Hannah… All these years… aren’t you tired?” “Get ready,” she said. BQ wrapped a hand around her waist. Her body was different now, no longer relaxed and waiting. She rocked side-toside rigidly. BQ followed in a macabre dance. She flexed, relaxed, flexed her grip on the spikes. Whatever was coming was coming soon, BQ sensed. The lights in the living room went out. The doorway was now black and empty, like the demons on the other side had absorbed the light.
“Hannah…” A murky figure stepped into the doorway. “Come with us…” said the second large man stepping into the bedroom. “It doesn’t have to be like this.” “I’m afraid it does,” Hannah replied coolly. And then it happened; the figures lunged at them, but Hannah was too quick. She rolled, BQ attached to her, and the figures flew over them. As they went to the ground she drove her arms upward into the dark. Chunk! Chunk! The dark figures flew over them, crashed to the floor, and did not move. “What…” BQ started. “SHH!” They stayed there, quiet, for several long seconds, then BQ felt Hannah relax and they stood. “I don’t… what just…” “It’s okay,” Hannah said. “You’re all right.” She moved across the room and flicked on the light. And there against the far wall lay the two large men, apparently dead, two long metal spikes sticking from the middle of their breastbones. Only now did BQ notice the incredibly large men were completely naked. He went gray and his legs wobbled. Hannah caught him and set him on the bed. “Okay, you’re okay.” But BQ did not look okay. A few minutes ago he was trying to make time with the beautiful mystery woman who’d literally run into his life the night before, and now he was standing in his room with two dead vampires. “Th-that…” he panted, “w-w-was unbelievable.” She shrugged. “I’m well practiced.” “Tell me more…” “In a minute, but you might want to look away; this is going to get nasty.” In a fit of manly pique he shook his head. “No.” She smiled at him briefly and went to her pack. From it she drew a beaten, black rod, about nine inches in length and three

Vampire City ? From Page 74 inches in circumference. It was wood, dark wood, and ornately carved. “A gift from my father,” she said. She gripped it by the well-worn grooves, pushed a button that BQ didn’t see, and snikt!... a gleaming, serrated blade popped from the top. “You sure about this?” she asked. BQ steeled himself, still gray, and nodded firmly. Hannah walked over to the bodies, gripped each man by the hair to expose the neck, placed the blade firmly on the Adam’s apple of each, and calmly sawed off their heads. It was short work and mostly bloodless. The deed done, she said a few silent words of what BQ assumed was prayer, and placed the heads in her pack. BQ was starting to wonder what else was in there: a gun? A motorcycle? A Navy SEAL team? She finished her incantation, sighed deeply, and moved back to the bed. She sat down next to BQ and they were quiet for a long time. Hannah could tell from the vibration of the mattress that BQ was crying. She placed an arm around his shoulders, turned her face to his with a finger, and

He stopped crying. She broke the kiss. “My name is Hannah Von Port. I’m a vampire hunter.” BQ was still stunned. Attentive but stunned. Hannah took his face in her hands. “What just happened here… I’m sorry. I’ve been doing this a very long time; you’re the first civilian to survive the experience. There is... there’s a clan of vampires living in Cape May, I’ve traced them to the Point. I haven’t found the lair yet, but I know it’s there. It’s dangerous work and I’m sorry you’ve gotten dragged into it, but here we are. I will do my level best to keep you safe, but I can make no promises. You will live, or you will die. But I will not allow you to become one of them. They know who you are now and they will never stop chasing you. They exist in secrecy. They have for centuries. Anyone who becomes aware of
their existence either joins them or dies by my blade. I’m… sorry.” She released his face. BQ pondered for a moment, then said, “I’ve watched a building explode, been chased by a swarm of bats, had my apartment destroyed, and now I’ll have to live the rest of my life on the run from an army of undead vampires.” Hannah nodded. “Yes.” “But you kissed me, so it’s worth it.” Now it was Hannah’s turn to blush. “What’s our next step?” he asked. She shook her head. “I’m not sure. But I do know we have to get out of here. When their scouts don’t return…” she nodded at the bodies in the corner, which were graying and emitting a bluish fog, “…they’ll send more. How long do you need to pack?” “Not very damn long.” BQ moved to the closet and grabbed a Nike gym bag. Embarrassed, he knocked the dust from it and began shoving in stacks of clothes from the wire racks. “So, last night,” he asked, picking through his socks and underwear bin, “what was that all about?” She answered, smiling as he sniffed various items before jamming them into the bag, “Well, like I said, I’ve been doing this a

Vampire City ? From Page 76 long time, with a large degree of success.” Sniff. “How large?” “100%.” “That’s pretty large.” “Yes. This clan, I’ve been tracking them for a very long time. I lost them in Maine a while back, but picked up on them very recently.” “How do you track vampires?” She shrugged. “After a while you just learn what to look for; in the news, the papers, the Internet.” “Who’da thunk that Internet vampires were real.” Hannah smiled. “Yeah, well, it doesn’t take long to weed out the fakes. The real ones are very subtle. Believe me when I say I’ve been in some very disturbing chat rooms with some very disturbed people.” “I don’t doubt it.” “There’s no Team Edward or Team Jacob in the real world. They don’t glimmer and make goo-goo eyes at you; they slash your throat and drain you dry. There’s no romance about it. In a way I pity them for the constant hunger they feel. But the world must be rid of them or it will never be safe.” “So how do you track them?” he stuffed a pair of sneakers into the bag which was now bursting. “Lighthouses.” “Really?” “I won’t bore you with the details, but every major lighthouse in the United States was built by a vampire clan as a beacon to others arriving from Europe.” BQ stopped. “Why?” Hannah shook her head. “There’s no time now. We really have to get moving.” “Okay.” “But last night, I had finally tracked them to that old, abandoned theater, which they were using as a sort of den. It wasn’t the main lair, but a kind of leisure spot.” BQ said, “If they lived off sticky theater floors they could have stayed there forever.” Hannah smiled at this. She

But she still wasn’t sure why she had kissed him. “Once I tracked them, I allowed one of their minions to capture me nearby.” “Why on earth would you do that?” “It’s a long story, but they have a ritual, a feeding ritual.” “I’m assuming it involved that awful white robe you were wearing.” She said flatly, “The robe is mine.” “And it’s beautiful. Go on.” “I allowed them to bring me in, was going to destroy them all, but one of the elders recognized me. So I set off the holy bomb and got out.” “Holy bomb?” “It’s like a pipe bomb, but instead of packing it with nails I fill it with holy water. Old family recipe. Gets the job done. That black smoke you saw last night wasn’t from the fire; it was the vaporized remains of about 50 vampires.” BQ saw she was grinning widely and it disturbed him. “I’m ready,” he said. “How much stuff you got in there?” “A lot, I think.” “Good, you’re going to need it… if you live that long.” “Comforting.” And with that they left the shattered apartment. Thankfully, BQ’s neighbors were of the hard-partying fisherman variety and so either

Vampire City ? From Page 78 were sleeping one off or out chasing cod. Regardless, no one had called the police so their getaway would be clean. *** From the window box the third bat watched the black car drive away. Carefully it followed, flying tree-to-tree, staying out of sight, hurrying against the brightening morning sky. The bat knew the driver was being careful, taking a circuitous route through the small Victorian town, just in case they were being followed. After 20 minutes the car made its way back up Beach Drive toward the burnt-out theater, which was now cordoned off with yellow police tape. The black car slowed and stopped. An ambulance, a Medical Examiner’s wagon and a police cruiser sat, lights spinning but otherwise silent in the lifting gloom, and a very confused policeman and equally confused EMT exchanged hushed words and nervous glances. From the ruined building the ME emerged with a stunned look and a glass specimen jar. The bat scout landed on the charred roof above and observed. The EMT asked, “What is that?” The ME shook his head.
Several things set this bat apart: it was very large, it had two short, humanlooking arms jutting out from its breast, and its face was unmistakably human... The policeman said, “It looks like…” The ME said nothing still, just lifted the jar and set his eyes on the foulest thing he’d ever seen; a greasy black bat, dead and shriveled, pathetic. Several things set this bat apart: it was very large, about the size of a regulation NFL football, it had two short, human-looking arms jutting out from its breast, and its face was unmistakably human, etched into a vision of agony. The EMT backed away, the policeman turned and retched up his breakfast bagel The ME said, “There are about 50 more like it inside, not all of them this pretty. I’ve never seen anything like it.” The cop and the EMT went to their radios; the ME walked to his vehicle, set the jar on the front seat, and drove away. The black Camry also pulled away and the bat followed. The sun was almost up, and the bat found it hard to keep up, the light sapping its energy, but it carried on dutifully.
The Camry came to rest in the parking lot of a large house on the north end of town where the Christian Admiral hotel once stood. The couple emerged from the car and scurried inside. The driver hit the lock button and the car horn beeped twice. The girl smacked the boy on the head. It looked painful. The bat, its mission now accomplished, landed in the dark shadows of a nearby mansion and transformed. On this sleepy end of town and so early in the morning, nobody noticed the naked woman shuffling to the pay phone outside the Pier House restaurant. With great effort she raised an arm and pressed the buttons. “I’ve found them.” She hissed the address into the phone. “Excellent, you have done well,” said the voice on the other side. “May I come home now?” “I’m afraid there is no time, my love.” “Master, please…” The phone went dead. The woman, too exhausted to transform and fly away, trudged across the street, climbed into the dunes, and burst into flames. Seconds later there was nothing left to mark her passing but a few ashes, which quickly flew away in the morning breeze.

The Cape May Crossword
None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: pizza. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. Across 1. This pizza chain’s storefronts are often recognizable by their signature red roof. The nearest location is on Rio Grande Avenue in Wildwood. 6 . This style of pizza, which features a thicker crust and extra cheese and sauce, is said to have originated at Pizzeria Uno in Chicago way back in 1943. 8 . This popular pizza topping is a variety of Italian-American salami. Its pink color comes from sodium nitrate, which is used as a curing agent. 10 . You might call a pizza loaded with mushrooms, peppers, onion, broccoli and olives this. 11 . This is the sweet, tomato-based sauce similar to the sauce used on pizzas. 12 . This is an Italian word for “man who makes pizza in a pizzeria.” 13 . In 2009 this pizza chain began an advertising campaign showing customer dissatisfaction with their product, then vowed to rebuild their pizza “from the crust up.”

Activity Of The Week
H
A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Harbor Fest
arbor Fest is billed as a celebration of the sea, and it is a great party. Thousands attend, the street is closed, vendors line the block, the smells are intoxicating and the food is delicious. This event is pure summer, but it’s a little hard to describe. Harbor Fest is a street fair with half the street under water, a block party with boats. It’s a popular community event, made more special by the fact that Cape May’s community includes permanent residents, coast guard families, seasonal residents and tourists. The event also draws attention to the sea as a fragile natural resource, and celebrates Cape May’s economic ties to the water. This year, Harbor Fest also salutes the 100th anniversary of the Cape May Harbor and the 20th anniversary of the Nature Center. The weekend starts at 5:30 on Friday night with the Blessing of the Waters, a tribute to commercial fishermen lost at sea. This solemn event includes local clergy and the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Band, and takes place at the Fishermen’s Memorial, at
Missouri Avenue and the harbor. On Saturday, the fun begins with arts and crafts vendors, nature programs, food, live music and a beer garden. The scallop challenge is like an episode of Top Chef. The children’s activities will make you feel like Peter Pan. The boating challenges will have you cheering for people you don’t know.
We have SO many ways you can get your feet wet.
“Paddle for a Purpose” is one of the highlights of Harbor Fest. It’s to raise money for the Nature Center’s Good Neighbor Fund – a scholarship fund to allow children of coast guard personnel to attend the center’s summer programs. Kayak rentals, $40 for a single, $70 for a double and $100 for a family (two doubles), include a T-shirt. Aqua Trails Kayak Tours presents this two-hour tour of the waters in and around Cape May Harbor at 1pm. Paddling out with such a large group can be a challenge – prepare for lots of giggleinducing collisions – but it’s also a lot of fun. Harbor Fest is scheduled for Saturday, June 18, from 10am to 5pm, with a June 19 rain date. Events will be held at or near the Nature Center at 1600 Delaware Avenue. Trolley service will be available. Harbor Fest is a partnership of the Chamber of Commerce, the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts, the Nature Center of Cape May and the Cape May Tourism Commission. More information is available at www.capemayharborfest.com. Celebrate the sea at Harbor Fest! Next week: Inactivity of the Week

Oscar is a cute one-year-old boy who is very playful. He knows basic commands but will need some training and plenty of exercise to help him burn up some energy. If you’re an active person and like to be outside, Oscar may be the right one for you. If you’re able to, stop by and check him out. We have a play area outside where you can spend some time with him to see if he would be right for you. Adoption fee is $95.

Haze is a sweet two-year-old young gal who was surrendered to our shelter because she didn’t get along with other dogs. Otherwise she is a very good girl who does fine with both kids and cats. She is also housebroken. She has been known to dig a hole or two. If you think Haze may work for you, stop by and meet her. She’s a little on the shy side, but once she warms up to you, you’ll see she is well worth it. Adoption fee is $95.

Tara was found on the streets and brought to our shelter by someone with a good heart. She is affectionate but also needs to learn some manners as she can be jumpy. She enjoys her toys and rawhides but can be protective of them, so we suggest a home with children over the age of 13. Overall she is a good girl who just needs some training and guidance. Stop by to meet her today! Adoption fee is $95.

Ferris is an independent fellow but he seems to want to learn to be a good companion cat. He likes to be petted, but since he lived the first part of his life outside, he has to learn a few manners. If you’d like to help Ferris become the charmer he’s destined to be, please stop by the shelter. Adoption fee is $35.

Haze just arrived at the shelter. His owner’s landlord won’t let him in the house anymore. He’s a sweet, affectionate young fella, and he loves to be held. He’s very good with kids and dogs, and he’s even used to being indoors and outdoors. If you’re looking for a younger guy with lots of love to give, stop by and see him! Adoption fee is $70.

The Understudy Takes The Stage
T
advertisinG feature
he closing week of Say Goodnight, Gracie can only mean one thing: next week is the official opening night for The Understudy. The Understudy by Theresa Rebeck is the story of an action hero from feature films making his Broadway debut in a play by Franz Kafka. His understudy arrives for a rehearsal and it turns out the understudy was engaged to the female stage manager. That relationship provides the fodder for outrageous comedy and insightful observations about our culture. Three New York actors bring their wonderful work to Cape May Stage. The next night is the official opening night. Join the party after the show at the Pier House on Beach Drive and meet Kristen Calgaro, G. R. Johnson, and Luke Darnell. There is always a celebratory energy after an opening night, particularly after a comedy. The designers and director will be in attendance and they always enjoy talking about the work. Grab a cocktail and enjoy a special night. And the exciting news continues because Cape May Stage’s spring fundraiser, Denim & Diamonds, is next Sunday, June 26th at the Corinthian Yacht Club. This is the “see and be seen” event of the year and a wonderful excuse to wear something glittery with your dress-up denim. There will be great music supplied by Blondage and an auction with new and exciting prizes. It is guaranteed to be fun – and while you are enjoying yourself, you are also helping to bring the finest theatre and education out-
Clockwise: Luke Darnell, G.R. Johnson and Kristen Calgaro star in Cape May Stage’s new show, “The Understudy.” Meet them after their opening-night performance at the Pier House. Below: Make sure to get your tickets to Cape May Stage’s spring fundraiser, Denim & Diamonds, at Corinthian Yacht Club. reach to our community. The community of Cape May is such a special place. It is events like Denim & Diamonds that provide the support for the growing reputation of Cape May Stage. People here see cutting edge theatrical events before anyone else. The New Victory Theatre in Times Square just announced their new season, starting with The Little Prince comprising the same cast you saw at Cape May Stage. We are so thankful to all of our supporters and that list expands with each new season. More and more people are hearing about Cape May Stage and coming here to see what all that talk is about. Bird Droppings
H
The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu
aving just led scores of people in the field on the Cape May Bird Obser vator y’s Spring MAYgration Festival and then at a festival in Maine, I have amassed fresh insights into the field of bird study. Specifically, why some people have trouble finding birds and others don’t. Evidence suggests that it does not relate to age. It does not relate to experience. It does not relate to gender. It does not relate to belt size, hair style, eye color or even, necessarily, visual acuity. It seems to have everything to do with binoculars. People armed with newer binoculars that are specialized for birding excel at finding birds. People who have binoculars that are not designed for bird study or were purchased more than 20 years ago have a tough time getting on target and enjoying the birds everyone else is seeing. So fix the problem, why don’t you? For less than $300 you can buy binoculars that are better than the stuff we paid over a
thousand bucks for in the 1980s. Really. Why would I lie to a fellow birder? You want examples? You want me to name names? Okay. Are you, for example, the owner of a Zeiss 10x40 Classic? If so, your binocular is a step ahead of the Galileo dustbin. Yes, the instrument was the end-all and
be-all of optics back when Ronald Reagan was president. Yes, you and that glass have seen a lot of great birds together. But the technology is stone knives and bear skin compared to the stuff they make today. Near 100% light transition. Optical clarity edge to wide field edge. Close focus makes the ol’ 10x40 an optical trilobite. Even if they do work as good as the day you bought them (which is unlikely) the image is not a patch on what a new Zeiss FL or Swarovski offers today. I dare you, I beg you, to go into the Cape May Bird Observatory. Look through a Leica Ultravid. See what you are missing every time you raise your old trilobites to your eyes. The difference will shock you. But what will really amaze you is what happens when you compare your old instrument with something like a Nikon Monarch. The Monarch now is a third of the price that you spent on your relics way back

Bird Droppings ? From Page 105 when. What you are about to see is how good optical technology has gotten in 30 years. So what’s stopping you? Pride? Obstinance? Loyalty to a technologically outf lanked tool? If bird watching is something you enjoy, why not get all the enjoyment you can from it? Why cheat yourself every time you bring binoculars to your eyes? If you owned a dishwasher that stopped getting dishes clean you’d replace it, right? If you owned a suit that was one step ahead of the Salvation Army drop-off bin, you’d replace it, right? Why are binoculars any different? They may not go out of style. But they do stop being your friend. Do yourself a favor (and do the people whose job it is to get you and your binoculars on birds a favor, too). Head down to the CMBO and see where the glass ceiling is now. It doesn’t cost a thing to look. And the image you’ll discover is priceless. The Cape May Bird Observatory, at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking lovely Lake Lily in Cape May Point is THE information
Isn't it time for a new pair? spot for anything to do with nature. The center is open 9:30am to 4:30pm except Tuesdays through the end of August. Ask any of our staff – they are always glad to help with anything you need – even things you didn’t know you needed yet. Get your hands (and eyes) around a pair of binoculars that you can really enjoy; take them out on the deck; enjoy the fit and feel; try different makes and models. It's a lot like test driving a car.
While you are there, pick up the schedule of daily walks, a free birding map and checklist so you’re ready to start using those new binoculars. Did you know that the CMBO offers naturalist-led field trips throughout the year. And don’t forget the newest books on and about birding and nature. Pick up a bargain from the vintage book selection, or some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise. Need a gift for a nature enthusiast friend but are clueless as to what they want? Pick up a gift card, redeemable at any of our New Jersey Audubon Centers throughout the state. If you aren’t fortunate enough to be in the area, you can purchase your binoculars from our online store, FeatherEDGEOptics. org. If you want to know what’s happening in the natural world, visit BirdCapeMay.org where birding is just a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column
e
They finally meet! Stella Dixon goes for a date with Everett Chance... see HIS take on page 33.
verett Chance and I don’t have a great deal in common. Everett is nearly 20 years my senior. He owns a home; I own, well, a lot of shoes. I like to jog; he doesn’t see the point. He enjoys kite flying; it just isn’t my thing. I like to think of myself as a glasshalf-full girl, but Everett’s glass is decidedly half empty. Over the course of our date, he told me that the interns who work for him are annoying (because they’re “so perky”), that his cousins are aggravating because they married really great people (“damn overachievers”), and that his idol is Seinfeld's George Costanza (because things are constantly going awry in his life). I’m inclined to believe this last point, as even our date didn’t go swimmingly. (Cucina Rosa was closed when we got there, then Everett’s car remote stopped working, and then, on the ride home from Panico’s, we nearly got side-swiped by a bus.) The first four times I tried to write this column, I wrote about all of these differences. I wrote that, despite all of Everett’s good qualities (he’s intelligent, talented, articulate, gentlemanly, and he’s got good hair, too), that
we just wouldn’t work. Our lack of common ground would tear us apart. Or it would be the age gap. Or it would be the differences in our dispositions. But I couldn’t in good conscience submit that, because it’s just not the whole truth. And I’m constantly harping about the importance of being honest so, at the risk of sounding like a superficial twit, here goes. I am not attracted to Everett. I’m not saying that Everett is a bad-looking guy; he certainly is not. And I’m
ance! m r o f er Live p e 21 • 7pm Jun
not saying that I’m some kind of Cape May nubile model type who should hold out for a Brad Pitt lookalike. (I spent the better part of the week trying to find a bikini that disguises my lopsided breasts and the cellulite on my butt.) But physical attraction is as important as it is nebulous. Ironically, things like cynicism and kiteflying are probably the very things I’d describe to my girlfriends as endearing, if only Everett and I were physically attracted to one another. And I’d convince myself that the age difference is more exciting than problematic. That’s the funny thing about attraction; it’s more powerful than is probably PC for me to admit. It’s more polite to peg an age gap as the problem. I know what you’re thinking; perhaps I shouldn’t place so much weight on physical attraction. But I believe that, in order for a relationship to work, there has to be at least a little of it there. And in the spirit of being honest – with Everett, with my readers, and with myself – I’ll tell you the truth. I’m looking for someone else. I can only hope that, when I do find him, he’s as attracted to me – lopsided boobs and all – as I am to him.

The Movie Column
Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Submarine”
C
oming of age films have been hit or miss in recent years — in fact, I think they’ve been a little less frequent compared to when I was younger. Then again, maybe coming of age films have more of an impact when you’re actually… well… coming of age. The new film Submarine is a self-proclaimed coming of age film, but it doesn’t look like the coming of age movies I remembered as a kid, like Porky’s (1982) or Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) (wow did I just date myself). At 15, protagonist Oliver Tate (played by relative newcomer Craig Roberts) pursues who he believes to be the love of his life while trying to help save his parents’ marriage. The girl of his dreams, played by Yasmin Paige, is (for all intents and purposes) a pyromaniac and an oddball. Then again, all the characters in this film are — oddballs that is, not pyromaniacs. But this only endears you to this quirky, offbeat comedy all the more. Don’t be fooled by the above-the-title credit given to Ben Stiller, who was a producer for the film. Not only is his presence in the film limited to a cameo on a soap opera that

Craig Roberts plays a teenager who loves a pyromaniac in “Submarine.” flashes on the screen for a few seconds, but this film’s sense of humor cannot be traced back to the Ben Stiller style. No antics, not much empty comedy calories in this film — so perhaps Stiller wanted to express a comedic bent we don’t get to see in many of his films. Or maybe he just wasn’t that involved in writing
Submarine (which was written by another relative newcomer Richard Ayoade). This film takes you in several different directions, and each one is as well constructed as the last. The subplot of Oliver’s mother (played by Sally Hawkins) flirting with exlover (now neighbor) Graham Purvis (played by Paddy Considine) is as engaging and funny a storyline as Oliver’s pursuit. Roberts plays his protagonist with a lot of emotion and energy, and Paige has equal depth and vulnerabilities. Coming of age has never had such a grown-up style or approach. This film goes for the laughs but doesn’t do so on the cheap. The humor is subtle at times, but never so subtle that you’re not laughing along. This film is proof that comedy does not have to be taken from a dumpster of adolescent humor. It’s as intelligent and moving as it is funny, and you don’t have to stoop to get it. The summer movies are out! What have you seen lately? Drop me a line at capemayfilm@ hotmail.com if there’s been something that has impressed (or disappointed) you at the box office.

Chris Bezaire on the latest trends and sales on the island
elcome to another edition of Real Estate Rewind, where we take a look at all of the transactions on the island for the previous two weeks. Once again we had a slow period, with four transactions, but the number of properties going under contract has increased, so I expect a jump in the number of sales in the upcoming weeks. That being said, let's take a look at what properties have changed hands. The first one of note is 11 Frigate Lane, which most of you would recognize better as being a street in the Osprey Landing development as you just get into town in Cape May. This development has been ongoing now for over five years and this is the first unit to settle. The unit was listed and sold by Todd "How come no one ever told me short hair was better?" DeSatnick of DeSatnick Realty for $2,000,000. Yes, that's a two followed by six zeros, so for those of you who think that the big money has left, this is just a reminder that properties are still doing okay here. It is hoped that

this is the first of several units to sell in this wonderful complex. Next we have 201 Pittsburgh Avenue, which was listed by Rich Parker of Chris Clemans Sotheby's International and sold by Lisa Ransom, from a Wildwood agency (She used to work in Cape May so we'll at least include her name....) for $540,000. Also in Cape May was the sale of 1300 Missouri Avenue which was listed by Rich Townsend of Jersey Cape Realty and sold by Peggy "Mother-in-law to Indiana Pacer's coach Frank" Vogel of Coldwell Banker Sol Needles for $495,000.
Finally we have a sale in Cape May Point. The property at 704 West Lake was listed and sold by Andrea Moffat of Chris Clemans Sotheby's International Real Estate for $500,000. On a sad note, as I was composing this article I was informed that my colleague Steve Cluff had passed away in his sleep. Steve has been with my office for more than nine years and never has a person made such a lasting impression. For those of you who knew Steve, you kn0w that he was a larger-than-life man with an even larger heart. Steve battled and beat cancer, and truly lived his life to the fullest. He was one of the nicest and kindest people any agent in the industry could have hoped to have the pleasure to deal with. More than than a colleague and peer, he was a friend, a husband and a father. He will be missed by all. Chris Bezaire is a fifth generation real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Sol Needles Real Estate in Cape May.
