The Police Blotter

PALM BEACH, Florida - A man stole a package of cookies valued at $1.19 from a store on Southwest Warfield Boulevard and was seen chewing as crumbs fell from his lips. When approached by police, the man said, “Yeah, I stole the cookies, I’m the cookie monster.”

Classic Quotations

A Story From The Past “A thinking woman sleeps with monsters.” Adrienne Rich “Adversity makes men, and prosperity makes monsters.” Victor Hugo “I am able to play monsters well. I understand monsters. I understand madmen.” Anthony Hopkins “Kings are in the moral order what monsters are in the natural.” Henri Gregoire “Everyone carries around his own monsters.” Richard Pryor “Scary monsters, and super creeps, keep me running, running scared.” David Bowie “We create monsters and then we can’t control them.” Joel Coen

“Across from the pier is the Lafayette, a relic of Cape May’s gay old days. Theatrical people frequented it and it was thought a “lively” place. On the next corner are cottages originally owned by the late William Weightman, of Philadelphia. They were considered the finest and most modern houses at the Cape. Now painted a dull battleship grey and overshadowed by the newer residences, they are unremarkable.” - South Jersey, A History, 1664-1923

Weird Word Of The Week

THERIANTHROPY This word, from the Greek word therion for “beast,” refers to the metamorphosis of humans into other animals, otherwise known as shapeshifting. Lycanthropy, the transformation of a man into a wolf, or a werewolf, is the most wellknown form of therianthropy.

Random Fact Of The Week

Loch Ness is the largest fresh water body in Britain, at over 22 miles in length, a mile and a half at its widest, almost 800 feet deep, and a surface area of nearly 21 square miles. It’s estimated that the loch is large enough to hold the world’s population ten times over.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J “A closed mouth gathers no feet. ” J

Once a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with a Dragon Roll. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

I

t seems nearly impossible to believe that by the time you read this, June will be over. On the other hand, that means the Fourth of July is upon us, so bring on the fireworks and other festivities. Fortify yourself with a Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, July 2 from 7am12:30pm before the parade kicks off at 1pm. The parade will start at Pittsburgh and Beach, head down Beach Avenue and end at Patterson. Get your groove on with The Doctors of Rhythm at the Rotary Bandstand, starting at 8pm Saturday night. You can catch a great fireworks display on Sunday, July 3, along the bay in North Cape May – get there early for music, food and amusements for the wee ones before the fireworks start at 9pm. On the Fourth, listen to the Congress Street Brass Band at the Rotary Bandstand at 6pm, which should pump you up nicely for the spectacular fireworks across from Congress Hall at 9pm. Congress Hall deserves a special shoutout for bringing fireworks back to Cape May in 2004, after a lapse of over 15 years, and they’ve brought it back with a bang, if you’ll excuse the pun. Round up the kids and bring a blanket or some chairs for a casual All-American Picnic on the Lawn. They’ll have face-painting, games and balloon sculpting, and the picnic begins at 5pm. The menu includes picnic favorites like hamburgers, hot dogs and all the fixings, with the added bonus of a priceless spot on the lawn for the fireworks. Looking for something a little more high-brow? But of course! How about a Lobster Bake on the veranda? This sit-down surf-and-turf din-

ner, complete with hors d’oeuvres and dessert, is by reservation only, and it sells out every year, so contact Congress Hall right away if you want to get in on this one-of-akind event. At 9pm, you’ll enjoy some patriotic music by the Congress Hall Festival Choir, and we happen to know they’ve been practicing long and hard, so it will be a treat. Then of course, the fireworks begin at 9:15 or thereabouts. Oh, and the party isn’t over once the fireworks are done – there will be live music in both the Boiler Room AND the Brown Room. WE WOULD be remiss if we didn’t also mention the splendid activities being held at Historic Cold Spring Village this coming weekend. Stop by the Village on Route 9 between 10am and 4:30pm and you’ll enjoy a baseball game straight out of 1873, various patriotic stories and speeches, demonstrations of early American trades and crafts, plus some American heritage tunes courtesy of the John Walter Cape Community Band. Trust us, one of the best ways to celebrate this country is to get back to its roots - isn’t that what Independence Day is all about?

After a little bird tipped us off to some local talent, members of the Exit Zero crew snuck out to Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille to catch happy hour and live music. The word was that Audrey Snow, a gifted, 20-year-old LCMR grad, would be playing acoustic covers. Typically, happy hour singers are decent musicians – people who have memorized more than a few tunes and have a voice capable of mimicking some of their favorite musicians. Audrey didn’t exactly fit into the category. She was cute and a bit bashful for a performer. She spoke only briefly and shied away from eye contact and applause. However, the applause kept right on coming because Audrey has a beautiful voice, and the same qualities that make her different from most happy hour performers make her utterly endearing to the crowd. To hear Audrey, stop by Harry’s between 4-8pm on Saturdays, or – if you can’t wait that long – find a video of Audrey playing her original song “Late Night” on YouTube. Just search “The Watermark Sessions Audrey Snow.” We here at Exit Zero strive for perfection, but sometimes we fall short and we’re the first to admit it. We send our apologies out to our friends at A Ca Mia for the misprint accompanying last week’s photo of Rosalie Hettenbach’s art show, which we mistakenly identified as taking place at Cucina Rosa. (This is what happens when you live in a town where the mall is anchored by two excellent Italian restaurants, but we apologize for the error nonetheless.) So please get over to A Ca Mia and check out Rosalie’s work, which will be on display there through the summer.

The Inside Scoop On City Hall

T

A user’s guide to Cape May City council meetings... by Kate Chadwick and Jon Roth

he Exit Zero team navigated the summer traffic to attend another city council meeting this past Tuesday. Your intrepid correspondents enjoyed some bureaucratic doublespeak, further Kiwanis grandstanding, a bit of bathroom humor, and an instance of putting the cart before due course. Is there a pun in there? Read on to find out... Meeting of Cape May City Council, Tuesday, June 21, 2011. 7:04: Mayor Mahaney, attired in a maroon striped polo (we’re guessing a polyester-cotton blend), strikes the gavel and mentions that the meeting agenda has been sent to the Star & Wave and the Herald. We cast an envious glance at the press table, mostly because their chairs are much cushier than those in the audience. City Clerk Diane Weldon takes attendance – absent is Councilmember Fiocca. 7:05: All stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. 7:06: Mahaney mentions the excellent

work done by the Cape May Visioning and Planning Committee, particularly on the part of Craig Hurless, professional planner and engineer, Dennis Crowley, committee chair, and Linda Steenrod, committee member and owner of the dog-friendly Billmae Cottage. The purpose of the committee is to garner “public input, asking citizens what they want the city to look like in 20 years.” Mr Hurless says the goal “is to increase the degree of consistency between counties and agencies to work together… and this is the portion of that process in which the citizens are involved.” Hear hear, we say, for citizens getting involved. 7:10: Just how involved were the citizens? A Community Visioning Survey was posted online, sent to a number of residents, and (we happened to notice) inserted in several programs from the Music Festival. The response? About 65 surveys were returned, and attendance as the Visioning Meetings was 55 people (at each meeting or in total, we can’t rightly say). Not a dismal turn-out, but as we always say: if you want

your survey filled out, make sure to offer the applicants a prize – we suggest a year’s free parking.

Speaking of dismal turn-outs, we should mention that there were five citizens in the audience at this council meeting, six press representatives and eight bodies at the council table – a wee bit lopsided. 7:12: Mr Hurless lists the next five steps in the Community Visioning process, which, we admit, are almost completely unintelligible to us – highly bureau-

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 15 cratic, hardly straightforward. The gist, in Hurless’ words: “We’re looking at seven months,” before the process is complete.

7:13: Happily, Deputy Mayor Wichterman steps in to ask the benefits of the visioning process. Hurless responds, in a nutshell, “Numerous state agencies can provide funding and assistance” to our city. Mayor Mahaney remarks that during the previous program in 1998, the city received “priority status for federal and state grant programs… we received millions of dollars.” Suddenly seven months of red tape doesn’t sound so bad. 7:16: Linda Steenrod, in a forest green blouse and fitted dark jeans, thanks Craig

for all his work, adding “Everyone that attended the meetings had valuable information, but Craig was the one that pulled it all together.” 7:19: City Clerk Diane Weldon, wearing a black pantsuit, takes another roll call. Attendance hasn’t changed in the 19 minutes since she last took roll. 7:20: Deputy Mayor Wichterman, channeling Tony Soprano in a black dress shirt and gray jacket, begins reading resolutions – as usual, there are plenty of them. 131-2011 – Regarding the Community Visioning Plan – Wichterman again thanks Craig and the committee, remarking that it’s self-explanatory that this resolution will pass. 132-2011 – Shared services with county; discusses off-site storage for computer files at a facility in Woodbine. 133-2011 – Performance bond guarantee for the Lutheran Church. 134-2011 – Special revenue item – unforeseen income. 135-2011 – Shared service agreement with Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authorities regarding trash and recycling removal. 136-2011 – Approval of liquor licenses. Wichterman adds “We allow the hotels

to have live music outside the building between noon and 9pm. This seems to be a good time to shut them inside.” Tell that to all the revelers at the Rusty Nail who just want to hang around the fire pit and finish their beer in peace. 137-2011 – Approval of Remington & Vernick to handle ADA-sanctioned handicapped-access improvements to Franklin Street School and Carpenter’s Lane. 138-2011/138A-2011 – Bill-paying. 139-2011 – Approval of an agreement between Craig Testing and the City of Cape May regarding convention hall “quality control testing.” The test company will takes vials of cement from each truck to ensure they’re of the expected quality. The city signed with this company under the advisement of Hunter Roberts Construction.

140-2011 – Approval of a closed meeting immediately following the current one to discuss two things: appointments for next year (we don’t think they mean dental); and negotiations of CMFD firefighters’ contract. 141-2011 – A reorganization meeting has been scheduled for July 1 at noon. 7:25: Linda Steenrod asks for clarification on Resolution 133-2011, which mistakenly mentions the Lutheran Church when the company in question is actually Steger’s Beach Rental. Clerk Weldon graciously throws herself under the bus, admitting that it was a typo (which those of us who type for a living can surely appreciate). Linda then asks about Resolution 136-2011, and whether this includes renewals for ALL liquor licenses in town. Mayor Mahaney replies that it applies to every license except Carney’s, which is awaiting a tax return for approval. Linda’s last inquiry, regarding the cement testing in 139-2011, is whether or not this testing was accounted for in the initial convention hall budget. And it was. 7:29: Mayor Mahaney asks for the mistake in Resolution 133-2011 to be fixed: that “Lutheran Church” be replaced with “Steger’s.” Councilman Murray adds “Not that we have anything against the Lutheran Church.” Mayor Mahaney responds, “Let’s just hope they don’t call Steger’s asking for $13,000!” 7:31: Diane Weldon, who, bless her heart, seems charged

with reading a lot of lists, launches into her litany of monthly reports received since the last City Council meeting, which include police, construction, Washington Street Mall Management, fire department, Shade Tree commission, Madison Avenue and water tank evaluation reports.

7:37: It’s time for new business! This is less exciting than it sounds. 7:38: City Manager Bruce McLeod, wearing a white dress shirt with no jacket and a polkadotted tie, briefs the council on convention hall progress. The first four weeks were spent on administrative paperwork and finalizing contracts. Since then, Arthur Henry Inc. has laid the piles with “marine-grade quality” grout in the center of each. Concrete work is scheduled to start next Monday. It will be a ten-week process during which five to ten concrete trucks will enter town daily, and three vials of cement will be tested from each truck. McLeod also mentions that the construction has allowed for the elimination of two telephone poles in the vicinity of the promenade, which will enhance the “beautification

The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 18 of the site.” The floor planking and the erection of steel framing should take place by early September. Mayor Mahaney says “We should be able without a doubt to meet the opening deadline of Memorial Day 2012.” (You may want to save this issue of EZ for posterity folks – we still have a doubt or two.) 7:42: McLeod remarks that the construction fence around the hall prohibits pedestrians from walking directly down the promenade. When construction isn’t heavy, visitors will be directed to a safe passage with a series of cones and barrels. When deliveries are underway, they will have to “cross and recross the street,” assisted by a policeman controlling traffic and pedestrian crossings.

7:45: City Manager Bruce McLeod and Councilmember Terri Swain (looking sharp in a black dress and a bright yellow jacket) distribute to the council plans for an “informational cart” the Washington Street Mall Business Planning Committee proposes as part of a greeting program. The cart would be positioned at various junctures along the mall, and someone will man the cart to answer visitors’ questions about “the location of

the library, the beach…” (The beach? Are these visitors from the Sahara?) While there are ordinances preventing kiosks on the mall, this mobile cart would be purely for informational purposes. 7:50: Deputy Mayor Wichterman weighs in: “Anything that makes it easier for them to find their way around, I’m all for it.” Mayor Mahaney, on the other hand, has some reservations, as follows: 1) We already have an Information Booth at the end of the mall; 2) permission was already given to build a town crier kiosk outside of Casale’s; 3) thus far the city has tried to increase signage while respecting our history; 4) he doesn’t want to encourage other organizations to lobby for their own carts; and 5) it seems late in the game for this proposal. Mayor Mahaney “would have liked to have seen this proposed in March at the latest.” 7:55: It’s ultimately decided that the council is not ready to vote, as the proposal is premature – putting the cart, as it were, before due course. 7:59: City Manager McLeod mentions upcoming events in town, including the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast on July 2, at which point he leaves a meaningful silence. Deputy Mayor Wichterman smiles while Mayor Mahaney takes the bait: “Will there be raffle tickets?” You bet there will.

Independence Day fireworks will take place on July 4 at 9pm from a barge in the ocean before Congress Beach. 8:01: Mayor Mahaney alerts the council and audience to the second seasonal Sunset Parade, which will be held at the coast

Thursday, June 30, 2011 The Inside Scoop On City Hall ? From Page 20 guard base at 8pm on July 3 – “a very patriotic event.” Mahaney also credits Dennis Crowley, Arnold Pitman, Andy Fontaine, Mary Rothwell and others for their work with the Community Visioning Committee. Finally, he says that the city will erect three signs by the convention hall site explaining the project, accompanied by “a beautiful front view of the proposed convention hall.” 8:03: Linda Steenrod returns to the podium and makes inquiries as to the route the cement trucks will take in and out of town. She directs attention to the cones placed outside of the convention hall, and says they are “often moved so that cars can park there.” McLeod says “That’s not permitted. We’ll have our law enforcement address it.” Mayor Mahaney says “It’s always the same people…”

Finally Ms Steenrod asks whether bathroom custodians have power washers at their disposal, and remarks that she always notices “a lot of pieces of toilet paper on the ground,” which she attributes to overly thin toilet paper. “Maybe we can get thicker toilet paper?” she asks. McLeod replies: “We only carry two-ply, not fourply.” Linda responds emphatically, “This is not two-ply, it is single-ply!” Everyone laughs, but as hard-hitting journalists, we have to wonder: will Cape

May’s derrieres be any better served by this discussion?

8:07: Dennis Crowley approaches the podium in white and blue striped seersucker shorts. He asks how the city is maximizing the upcoming National Lifeguard Championships, running from August 3-6. Mayor Mahaney replies that the city is working closely with the United States Lifesaving Association. They’ve notified local organizers and media outlets on a regional and national level. Since this year’s competition is not sponsored by ESPN or Sports Illustrated (as in previous years), the event has been totally publicized by the Civic Affairs Department. This will be the fifth time in 23 years that the competition has been held in Cape May, which we think is pretty cool.

8:11: Meeting is adjourned. Everyone begins to chat while we dash to the car to make sure our meter hasn’t run out.

Name: Leslie Donaldson Workplace: Congress Hall pool manager Age: I’m 37. Hometown: Born in Philly, raised in Cape May, and live in Lower Township. How long have you worked here? On and off since 2005. This is my fourth year as pool manager. Best thing about the job? I get to be on the beach in the sun, interacting with fun, interesting people – how can you beat it? What do you recommend here? A coconut ginger mojito – delicious and dangerous. And I really like the chicken Caesar wrap. What’s your OTHER dream job? To be a flight attendant – it’s just hospitality in the sky. I always say “Coffee, tea or me?” Favorite thing about Cape May? The beaches, and it’s the one place on the planet where you can see the sun rise and set over the water. Interview by Kate Chadwick Want to nominate an employee of the week? Email kate@exitzero.us.

Every week our photographer Danielle O’Neal roams the streets of Cape May on a mission... to give away a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. But it’s not quite THAT easy – first, the lucky recipient has to answer three questions related to our issue theme, which this week is all about monsters. This week’s winner is Bob Ruff, 62, a software trainer who hails from Bloomburg, PA. We found Bob strolling along the Washington Street Mall with his lovely companion. Here are his answers to our piercing questions: What’s the scariest monster you know of? Zombies are pretty creepy – they just keep coming. Do you check under the bed before you go to sleep? Always, but only to see if our dog is hiding there.

What is your favorite monster movie of all time? Hmmm... Bride of Dracula? Bob wins a $50 gift certificate to Copper Fish for answering our questions. Congratulations and enjoy! PHOTOGRAPH BY Danielle o’neal

Chance Meetings

T

Everett Chance wines and dines Cape May’s single ladies

here are plenty of fish in the sea. Around Cape May, there are even more on plates. Dating and seafood go hand in hand (or fin in fin?) around here. That’s how Cindy and I wound up at Axelsson’s Blue Claw, one of the area’s best seafood restaurants. It’s full of old wood beams and paneling, models of ships, and none of the trappings of young hip places. Axelsson’s lets the food do the talking, not the decor. And what you give up in view – the windows overlook the commercial fishing boats that likely brought in your dinner – you gain in freshness and taste. Cindy went for the surf and turf, I ate a grilled seafood kebab, and we both left full. Everything was cooked to perfection: the vegetables were fresh and savory, the beef was tender, and the lobster, shrimp, and scallops were all just right. The kitchen staff knows their way around a fish. And Cindy knows her way around a date. She’s done this before, and isn’t afraid to say so. Ours was her 14th date since she re-entered the singles scene after a

divorce, so she knows what works and what doesn’t. A casual dinner for pleasure, good. Taking her to Atlantic City and getting a hotel room on the second date, not gonna fly. Cindy discusses her previous dates in a refreshingly honest way, not in an “I’ve got a lot of baggage” fashion, but in a manner that gives a guy some direction. And I like that she’s not afraid to eat dessert. We shared one of my favorites, Bananas Foster, which Axelsson’s does

with gusto. Cindy has an attractive figure, and she’s mindful of it, but not to the point where she frets about the effects of a single bowl of ice cream, bananas, cinnamon and rum sauce. There’s nothing wrong with casting a wide net when you’re trying to find the right fish. If you’re looking to meet new people, it doesn’t hurt to try online dating, go on fixup dates arranged by friends, or respond to columnists in Exit Zero. Take sensible precautions, know what you’re trying to catch, and don’t be afraid to throw back the ones that aren’t keepers instead of leaving them to flop around on the hook. Would you like to stop swimming around long enough to enjoy a good meal? Send an email to info@exitzero.us, I’ll be in touch, and we’ll go to dinner at one of the Cape’s fine restaurants. Afterwards I’ll write all about it, a combined date and restaurant review. Your name will be changed, the restaurant’s won’t. Maybe I’m the fish you’ve been trying to catch.

Late Night At Cape May Stage: A Sure Thing

T

Acting interns present comic and cerebral performances at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse

here are only so many ways to spend your Saturday night, but for the month of July Cape May Stage offers an exciting new option with Sure Thing, an evening of one-act comedies by David Ives. Ives, a graduate of Northwestern University and Yale School of Drama, is a recipient of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Playwriting and has written humor pieces for The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker in addition to his career as a playwright. Sure Thing, described by Ben Brantley in The New York Times as “a wild slice of cerebral vaudeville,” features a series of short, smart comedies. In Words, Words, Words, three brilliant chimpanzees hammer away at typewriters, striving to write Hamlet for the mysterious doctor overseeing them. Phillip Glass Buys A Loaf Of Bread pokes goodnatured fun at the contemporary composer as he enters the grocery store. These lighthearted but thought-provoking pieces are sure to delight. Each raucous late-night performance of

Catch these interns in David Ives’ “Sure Thing” Sure Thing will feature Cape May Stage’s talented summer acting interns. Internships at Cape May Stage give students the opportunity to meet with professional actors, directors and designers. During the course of the

summer they watch rehearsals, participate in workshops and work in all aspects for the theater, from administrative offices to backstage during the productions. In addition to their late-night performances, the interns also offer family-friendly entertainment in the mornings with Cape May Kids. This is the third year of the internship program at Cape May Stage and it continues to expand every year. Directed by Eric Oleson and stage managed by Len Luvera, Sure Thing features interns Sabrina Blackburn, Daniel Povinelli, Jodye Carroll and Iraisa Ann Reilly acting in these absurd tales of love, language and missed opportunities. In the words of Artistic Director Roy Steinberg, “When you combine attractive, talented actors with smart, comic writing... It is the perfect way to start or end your Saturday night!” Sure Thing runs on Saturday, July 9, 16 and 23 at 10:30pm at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse on Bank and Lafayette streets. Tickets are $15 and can be reserved by calling 884-1341.

Cape May Cooks

A culinary column by Knickerbocker and the Southern Belle

A

sk any Cape May produce vendor when the local beans, tomatoes, corn and peaches are coming in, and they’ll tell you “around the 4th of July.” That gives us two reasons for fireworks this week! Your Exit Zero culinary guides invite you to celebrate with a 4th of July lunch on the beach. This week’s column offers recipes for some of our favorite packable picnic goodies. Now, for picnickers inexperienced with Cape May shores, we offer a word of warning: seagulls! Those winged marauders will stop at nothing to steal whatever is in your hand, including your hand. So to avoid your personal Hitchcock moment (we speak from experience!), enjoy your meal under some type of shelter – beach umbrellas will do nicely. Coolers are handy, but not essential for these recipes. Nothing contains mayonnaise. And another tip – while we do NOT condone feeding the seagulls (it’s also against beach rules), taking care of your lifeguards is another story! They are so much friendlier, and much more appreciative! We’ll start with several salads. We never met a chicken salad we didn’t like, and this one is nice for stuffing into

* Best Crab Soup on the East Coast * Outdoor Seating - Free Parking Family Affordable • Vegetarian & Gluten Free Friendly pitas. Make ahead, and allow time to chill. Mediterranean Chicken and Tomato Salad 20 minutes serves 6 3 c chopped cooked chicken (make it EZ and buy a cooked chicken) 1 c grape tomatoes, halved 1 medium cucumber, peeled and chopped ¼ c finely chopped red onion, ½ c chopped fresh parsley ¼ c chopped fresh mint 1 lemon 2 tbsp olive oil salt and pepper to taste ½ c crumbled feta cheese In a medium bowl, combine the first six ingredients. Grate zest from the lemon to equal two teaspoons; squeeze lemon for juice. In a small bowl whisk zest, lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper together; pour over chicken mixture and mix. Add crumbled feta, if desired, just before serving. Tabouleh is a Middle Eastern grain salad that is a refreshing addition to any picnic. If you really want to make an EZ meal, just combine the tabouleh with the chicken salad above, omitting the duplicate ingredients. It’s delicious all together, and means one less container!

2/3 c chopped fresh mint 3 tbsp white wine vinegar 1 garlic clove 1 tsp Dijon mustard ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp sugar 1/8 tsp pepper ½ c olive oil Process all ingredients except olive oil in a blender until minced, scraping down sides. With the blender running, slowly add the olive in a steady stream until blended. In a small saucepan, bring broth to a boil and add cous-

cous; cover, remove from heat, and let stand 10 minutes. Toss together couscous and next five ingredients. Drizzle with vinaigrette, stirring gently to coat. Serve immediately, or chill. When poultry farming was a prominent industry in Southern New Jersey, asparagus and egg breakfasts were so popular that they were featured like pancakes on posters for local fundraising events. Typically, this recipe would have been cut in six portions and served on sandwich rolls. Or you can serve it cold in wedges as an appetizer or side dish. Summer Frittata di Asparagi 25 minutes serves 6 1 lb asparagus 8 eggs ¼ c grated Parmesan or Romano cheese salt and ground pepper ¼ c olive oil Special equipment: heavy sauté pan with oven proof handle and pot holders Snap the ends off the asparagus, wash and cook them in boiling water 5-10 minutes until tender. Cut in two-inch lengths. Drain. In a bowl, beat the eggs and add the cheese, salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a large, heavy sauté pan and add the asparagus, stirring to coat. Pour the egg mixture over the asparagus and cook over medium heat. As the eggs set, slowly lift the edge of the frittata with a spatula so the uncooked mixture runs under the solidified part. When the frittata seems almost done, finish cooking it in a pre-heated broiler five inches from the flame for about three minutes. Slide the frittata onto a platter, let it cool and cut into wedges. Make sure you use potholders when taking the pan from the broiler!

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

do not like the term “monster,” excepting when used to describe inhabitants of Wildwood, and even then I prefer the more accurate term “throwbacks.” Indeed, the night we created Frank and Stein’s “monster,” we had only the best of intentions. My two old inventor buddies were in town for the Scientists’ Ball, along with such luminaries of the age as Mary Shelley, that rogue Byron and that Polidori chap. There was talk of Progress and Rational Thought and God, and much whisky was consumed, when Frank declared that Electricity was the key to Life (he talked in Capital Letters, which he felt gave him Authority), and we should create Some that very Night. Well, the only subject who had passed away recently was a previous Young Albert, my treasured canine companion. I was loath to disturb the little terrier’s rest, but missed him something awful and was two sails to the wind, so off to the Pet Sematary (I made the mistake many years later of mentioning the place to that little scribe, Stephen King) we staggered, in a thunderstorm, trailing a

tin kite that Stein has rigged up from the foil labels of beer bottles. We applied wires to Albert’s headstone (“Chasing rats in Hell,” it said) and waited. The third strike trailed blue fire down the kite string to the ground (the first two hit Byron on the head, but he scarce noticed). Well, nothing happened for a full minute, and we were all looking sheepish, when suddenly a pair of sparks sprung back out of the ground and hit Frank and Stein respectively. Frank instantly fell to all fours and

began growling and yipping something awful, while Stein hopped upon a nearby tombstone and began cawing at the sky. “Gad, sir, what madness?” gasped Byron, who had been saying exactly the same thing all evening, to everything from the accidental addition of ice to his malt whisky, to his losing an ear in a razor fight in Cabanas. Shelley, the sharper quill in that writing desk, instantly declared: “Your dog, was he an aggressive terrier?” “He was,” I admitted. “But seems less than pleased to be roused from his Afterlife.” Indeed, Frank/Albert was advancing on us, foaming at the mouth. “And was he buried with anything?” the lady asked. “The very seagull he choked to death on,” I whispered in horror. “Well, sir,” Shelley declared, “this experiment was a success.” “Can we cure them?” I asked. “I am not fond of Albert in this mood and form.” “Sort of,” she replied, producing a large revolver from among her clothing. I will say no more, dear hearts … save, avoid the Pet Sematary at night. And don’t be an ass who flies metal kites.

I

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

f you’ve ever tried muting a movie during a climactic moment, you know that, without the background music, everything changes. Action scenes become less suspenseful, romantic scenes less sappy, and feel-good scenes less cheery. When I was young, I decided that my life would be much better if I could have a soundtrack, too. I wanted appropriate background music to spontaneously play just like it does in the movies. This way, I figured, the scenes of my life would become more suspenseful, romantic, cheery and altogether more visceral. Of course, this doesn’t occur in real life. And if there does happen to be music playing during a big moment, it’s often not what we’d choose. The song that played during my first kiss was AC/DC’s “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.” When it came time for my high school class to pick a graduation song, everyone voted for The Police’s “Don’t Stand So Close to Me,” because so many of our teachers had been fired for, well, doing more with students than teaching. Not exactly the music I’d had in mind. The

soundtrack of the restaurant – and, trust me, every Cape May restaurant has one – isn’t what I’d choose, either. The kitchen is chaotic, so it makes sense that cooks are drawn to beats that get adrenaline pumping. Unfortunately, this music – usually Russian techno or Spanish heavy metal – also gets my head throbbing. If there are lyrics, they usually consist of indistinguishable screams. (Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” comes on occasionally, but none of the cooks will admit to adding it to the kitchen iPod.) Ironically, this music is a welcome distraction from the music of the dining room. A girl can only take so much jazz piano

before she starts playing it in her sleep. And, at holiday time, I may hear “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer” 17 times. By night’s end, I almost wish someone would run me over with a reindeer. Restaurant employees often make their own music, too. When he’s totally stressed out, my favorite busboy sticks his head in the ice box and sings. I suppose the acoustics are better in there. Actually, this busboy sings all the time. Last summer, after his girlfriend dumped him, I’d catch him humming Maroon Five’s “I Am In Misery” as he cleared plates. Music is what gets most restaurant employees through a shift. I know a waitress who hears “Welcome To The Jungle” in her head while serving; for another, it’s “Highway To Hell.” The songs that play while doing the dining room dance – dodging ice buckets and maneuvering through tables – may not be ideal, but they keep us dancing. In the restaurant, just like in the movies, you take comfort in knowing that, even if it’s Russian techno or the Titanic theme song, there will always be music.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady My sister, her husband and kids are headed to Cape May soon to spend their annual week with me and my husband. Is it wrong that I’m kind of dreading it? Her kids are out of control – I’m talking about jumping on furniture, commandeering the television remote and harassing my pets, to name a few offenses. Of course I love them all to pieces, but what can I do to get through this invasion? – Helpless Hostess Dear Hostess One of the drawbacks of living at the shore is occasional “invasions” by friends and relatives, but the Answer Lady believes you have a completely different problem, known as “disciplining other people’s children.” The Answer Lady has addressed this issue before, and it is quite the sticky wicket. As a general rule, the disciplining

Wise answers to perplexing questions

of children is the domain of parents alone, but if it’s your house, your furniture, your pets and your peace of mind being affected, certainly you have some say. Something along the lines of a quiet but firm “Brittany, please don’t jump on Aunt Sally’s $3,000 sofa” should suffice – no need for yelling or heaven forbid, spanking. Parents on vacation sometimes “clock out” of their disciplinarian roles, but that doesn’t mean you should suffer for it, particularly since this motley crew is benefitting from your

hospitality. If Mom and Dad take exception, don’t make an issue of it – a simple “I don’t want her to get hurt” should quell any rumblings. (And presumably it’s also true.) By the way, children often misbehave when they’re bored. Since you don’t have children, it might behoove you to stock up on a few playthings for your wee relatives – check out Toy Shoppe, Zoo Company, Dellas and Atlantic Books. And remember – it’s only a week – repeat that mantra to yourself as often as necessary. Dear Answer Lady New neighbors just moved in, along with loud parties, motorcycles and bonfires. If it was just a weekly vacation rental we could live with it, but it’s not. What to do? – Not Feeling Neighborly Dear Not The Answer Lady realizes that it’s easy for her to tell you to stroll over and speak with these barbarians, but you really should give it a shot. This way, you can comfort yourself with that attempt at civilized discourse when you pick up the phone to call the police the next time they disturb the peace.

Vampire City

Winged invaders terrorize Cape May in a chilling new installment of Terry O’Brien’s short story Chapter 5: This Old House

rendan Quinn sat, jaw agape, trying to process the tale he had just been told, of centuriesold vampires and the traveling circus clan that hunted them. Of Abraham Van Helsing who, it turns out, was not just a figment of Bram Stoker’s imagination. That nothing was a figment of Bram Stoker’s imagination, that it had all been real and sold as fiction to make a buck and support Van Helsing’s team. BQ had never been what you would call a scholar of classic literature, but he remembered studying Dracula in a college writing course and being chilled to the bone. Now, much more than his bones were chilled. “Are you okay?” Hannah asked him. BQ nodded. “I’m good, just… wow.” “I know.” “So you’re, what, descended from Abraham Van Helsing?” She gave a noncommittal shrug. “In a manner of speaking. I… my family, we were

Vampire City ? From Page 79 recruited to work for Abraham, generations ago, and the tale I told you is the tale I learned as a child. Von Port was not our given name, but after so many years in the carnival it just stuck.” BQ shook his head, “Crazy. Abraham and Tituba, what happened to them?” Hannah’s face clouded over, “The history there is a little hazy. It’s over a hundred years ago now. I know that Tituba lived a long life, long enough to make it to America near the turn of the century and find success as a seamstress and nanny.” Hannah produced a small leather booklet. Inside it was an old, yellowed photo of a very black woman standing next to a very young child, a toddler really, one or two years old. “1921,” Hannah said. “Tituba would be about 50 years old here.” “Who’s the baby?” BQ asked, staring at the photo. “What do you mean?” “The baby, with Tituba. The original Hannah Von Port would be about 22, 23 years old in this photo.” Hannah stuffed the booklet back in her pack. “Probably one of the kids she nannied. This picture was handed down to me – it could have come from anywhere.” “Then how do you know it’s her?” he asked. She smiled at him. “I just know, okay? Why don’t we leave it at that.” “Just saying…” “Are you hungry?” she asked, changing the subject. “Starved,” he replied. They’d gotten to the very large house on Beach Drive early that morning. They fell asleep immediately after the adrenaline rush of being attacked by two massive vampires at BQ’s apartment. When they woke again the sun was setting over the Delaware Bay. That’s when BQ asked her exactly what the hell was going on and Hannah had told him the tale handed down to her many years before.

“Hannah Von Port became the name of a lot of girls that moved in our circle,” she had told him, “the better to confuse any vampire assassins that might want to carry on Vlad Dracul’s dirty work.” It was all massively confusing to BQ, yet also somehow made perfect sense. He was terrified and thrilled to be caught up in such an insane adventure. Death now loomed behind every corner and in every shadow, but never had he felt so alive. If he knew exactly how close to death he was at the moment, he might have felt differently. * Outside the sunlight waned, and as the shadows crept across the dunes so too did a small army of vampires. They moved between buildings, vehicles, anything that cast a shadow. To passersby they looked like a clutch of albinos, trying their best to avoid direct sunlight in their long coats and sunglasses, but not so much as to be conspicuous. They divided into several small groups and took several paths up the beach toward the neighborhood of giant houses where the mighty Christian Admiral once stood. As the seconds turned to minutes the darkness spread. By the time they massed at the northernmost jetty it was almost fully dark. The last rays of sunlight still stung them, but it was tolerable through their clothes and thick sunscreen. Even vampires needed to be practical. They gathered excitedly, chattered and gnashed their teeth. As the light disappeared they shed their human guise and clothing and rocked excitedly among the dune brush, saliva dripping from their jaws. “The plan…” the biggest one hissed, “remember the master’s plan… ten from the front… ten from the rear… ten from the windows… ten from above… we must not fail him or our punishment will be great…”

Vampire City ? From Page 80 At this they chattered more loudly, more excitedly, anxious for the kill. “Forward…” the biggest one said a moment later when the moon shone bright. They slithered through the brush and to the sea wall. Across the street they went, their feet skittering on the blacktop, to the front yard of the big house. The smell of cooking animal flesh met them. “On my command…” the biggest one said and the vampires separated into four groups. Ten of them transformed into flying creatures with a barely audible pop! and floated up to the roof. The biggest vampire took a deep breath of the foul, salty human air, and gave the command. “Now!” he cried, and the vampire army stormed the house, crashing through the front and rear doors, shattering the gable windows, seeking their prey like fleshy missiles. The house would soon be full of death. * “I’ve got steaks or chicken,” Hannah announced from the freezer. “You pick,” BQ replied. “Hmmm…” she pondered and looked

BQ coughed, “Sounds good.” Hannah set to the task of preparing the steaks as the awkward moment hung there. “So…” BQ asked, “does the Von Port Traveling Amusement still exist?” “You’re looking at it,” she answered and popped the steaks in a pan. “What happened?” She put a bag of frozen veggies in the microwave. “It was… it was 1973. It did not end well.” BQ swallowed hard, reached out, and put his hand on hers across the breakfast nook. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. I’ve asked enough questions already.” She shook her head, “It’s okay. You should know everything. I got you into this, the least I can do is tell you how it got this far.” She wiped her eyes with the back of her

hand – it came away wet. “We were doing a show in rural Pennsylvania, little town called Kennett Square. We weren’t there to hunt, we stopped there every year to do a show, make a few bucks, and move on. We should have known, we should have seen it coming… it’s a mushroom growing town, lots of illegal labor, lots of brown skin… We didn’t charge much, so we’d fill the tent with hundreds of them every night. Cheap for them, but it added up for us. But this night…” It was her turn to swallow hard and grab BQ’s hand. “This night it was all gray skin. We should have known. We did our show as we always do, about an hour-and-a-half of all the tropes; clowns, trapeze, a few animal bits… at the end we all came out for a curtain call. But this night… nobody clapped. We stood there, all of us, in the center ring, lambs to the slaughter. The crowd stood, all of them, but not to applaud. By the time we figured it out it was too late. They descended on us like the vermin they are. We took a good many with us. We fought, God knows we fought, but they were too many and we fell. One by one, we fell.” “My… guardians ordered me away and

Vampire City ? From Page 82 covered my escape.” By the last few words she was weeping. He wiped a few tears from her cheeks. “Thanks,” she said, and went back to preparing the meal. “We,” BQ said. “What?” “You kept saying ‘we.’” “So?” “You said it was 1973. You can’t be older than 28, 29.” “Right,” she did not look up. “I meant the royal we.” He gazed steadily at her. “Right, the royal we. I gotcha’. I suppose somebody passed down this story to you, too?” “Exactly,” she said, still looking down. “It’s been a lot of years, there are a lot of stories.” “Right…” She turned the steaks in the pan. The aroma was heavenly. She looked up, BQ was still staring at her. “What?” “Tell me,” he said. “Tell you what?” “The truth.” She considered this for a moment, then went to her pack and retrieved the leather booklet. She opened it to the old photo and held it up to BQ. “The little girl in the picture is me. I was there in 1973 when the vampire clan destroyed my team. They fought to the death to cover my escape. Most of them, the ones that were prepared, chewed on the little red tablets they kept on them at all times. Those that weren’t prepared were turned or drained. My name is Hannah Von Port, the only surviving child of Abraham and Elizabeth Van Helsing. I am 113 years old, but due to the vampire blood from which I was born I do not age very quickly. It is a blessing and a curse. A blessing in that I can continue my father’s good work, a curse because I’ve seen too many people I love die. I do not intend to let that happen to you.” BQ blinked several times. “So…” “What?” “You love me?” “I… no, that’s not what I… I

mean, you’re a good guy and all, but… you misunderstood me. I only meant I’m going to try to protect you. What?” BQ was laughing hysterically. “You should see your face. That must be what I look like all the time!” “You were just messing with me?” “Yeah,” he said. “I know you don’t love me. I mean, I love you, there’s no doubt about that. Happened somewhere around the third or fourth second I laid eyes on you. But that’s me. You can take your time, because I’m never leaving your side.” They smiled at each other, then she turned the stove off. BQ asked, “What are you doing? The steaks aren’t cooked.” “We’ll get to those later,” she said. “Right now I want to eat something else.” “Wha…” “Take your clothes off…” She rounded the breakfast window and was on him like a cat, kneading at him, pulling him off the chair. He did not resist. “Come on,” she said and led him to the stairs. “Let’s go fu..” KWEE! KWEE! KWEE! The shrill alarm sounded from a panel in the next room. Hannah grabbed her pack from the chair. “We have ten seconds. Move!” BQ was flummoxed. “What…” “FOLLOW ME!” She slung the pack over her shoulder and dragged him through the kitchen and into what looked like the pantry. “Hannah…” “No time!” She pulled them inside the closet-sized pantry, punched a button on the wall, and the floor beneath them disappeared. They fell into blackness. * The biggest vampire watched as his charges entered the house. No sooner had the sound of breaking glass ended when a new sound emerged. KWEE! KWEE! KWEE! Vampire City ? From Page 84 the alarm pierced his ears and he fell to the ground. Inside the house his minions did the same. Hidden inside the alarm was an ultralow frequency pulse that instantly ruptured their ear drums. It was then, several seconds too late, that the biggest vampire figured out that Hannah Von Port knew what the hell she was doing. “Master…” he hissed. “We have failed you…” Two seconds later the house erupted into a giant fireball. * With a thump they landed on a cushion. Hannah immediately bounded to her feet and pulled BQ away. “It’s going to get warm,” she told him. FWHOMP! Above them the house exploded. A sonic wave of heat shot down the corrugated metal and cement tube they had just fallen down and the small room was insufferably hot and airless for a few seconds. Hannah wasted no time in pulling them into yet another room by hitting yet another seemingly invisible button on the wall. Fresh, cool air met them in a dimly lit hallway that stretched for eternity in either direction. BQ could breathe

It was then, several seconds too late, that the biggest vampire figured out that Hannah Von Port knew what the hell she was doing. again. His lungs worked fine; it was his brain that was failing him. “Are you kidding me?” he asked. “Let’s go.” “You’re Batman.” At this Hannah allowed a flickering smirk and pulled them down the corridor. It was lit every 20 feet by very small, low wattage bulbs. She pulled them along. In his confused state BQ wasn’t much help. She felt like she was running a three-legged race, yanking and coaxing her partner along. “You’ll never get your deposit back on that house,” he quipped. “I own it, smart guy. And the three around it.” “How…” “The traveling amusement did well. I invested wisely over 113 years…” “Good grief.” As they talked he returned to himself, his body loosened up and she no longer had to pull him. A few minutes later they came to a stop.

“Here,” she said. “What?” Another invisible button-push and down came a red ladder. Up they climbed into a small rectangular room. She pushed open the door and they stood in the bathroom of an efficiency motel room. BQ looked out the heavily tinted window and from three blocks away saw the pluming smoke rise from the burning house, darkening the moon. Sirens rang in the distance. Hannah went to a control panel near the front door, punched a series of buttons and the windows went full black by some computer voodoo. She turned to him. “You okay?” He nodded. “Good. Get on the bed.” He nodded and did as he was told. “Lay down.” He laid down. “Hold on.” He gripped the sheets. She stalked him, circled the bed twice, eyed him up and down. She climbed onto the mattress and felt the cool silk sheets against her hot flesh. It was time. She put her face in his and kissed him deeply. He snored loudly.

The Cape May Crossword

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle just for “Exit Zero”! By Jon Roth So YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: monsters. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. Across 1. This 14-minute music video released in 1983 includes a voice over by Vincent Price and direction by John Landis, who also directed An American Werewolf in London. 4 . This 1962 novelty song was “a graveyard smash.” 8 . This many-legged sea monster, which is said to frequent the sea around Norway, could be related to the giant squid. There’s also a brand of rum that bears its name. 9 . He was the thirteenth child of Anna Leeds – after his birth, he flew out the chimney and stalked the Pine Barrens. 14 . Perseus slew this snake-haired gorgon after her reflection turned her to stone. 15 . This 1933 film stars Fay Wray and an enormous primate. 16 . In Irish folklore, if you heard this female spirit keening in the night, you probably wouldn’t last until morning. 17 . This bipedal, hairy primate frequents the forests of the Pacific Northwest. 19 . Halle Berry won an Academy Award for Best Actress in this 2001 drama.

“Riddle me this...” 21 Down.

20 . This is the three-headed dog that guards the gates of Hades. He also makes an appearance in the Harry Potter films. 22 . Things get a bit hairy in this 1985 paranormal comedy starring Michael J. Fox. 23 . Spanish for “goat sucker,” most scientists believe this monster, known for draining the blood of farm animals, is likely just a coyote with a bad case of mange. 24. T his female monster lured sailors to crash on the rocks with her song. Down 2 . This composite of a bird and a woman was prevalent in Greek mythology, usually snatching food or valuables from unsuspecting victims. 3 . Nicknamed “The Man of a Thousand Faces,” this actor was known for his work in silent films like The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. 5 . Mike Myers voiced this lovable green monster, the title character in the successful Dreamworks series.

6 . The Book of Job describes this coiled sea monster who will resurface to wreak havoc at the end of days. Also the name of a Thomas Hobbes treatise. 7 . This monster first appeared in a 1954 Japanese film as a mutant created after a nuclear detonation. 10 . This lake-dwelling beast, believed to be a descendent of the plesiosaur, has never been found despite extensive sonar searches. 11 . Also known as a yeti, this monster lives in the Himalayas. 12 . Though this name is commonly attributed to the square-headed monster himself, it actually belongs to the doctor who created him. 13 . Hercules slew this nine-headed reptile by cauterizing the stump of each neck. 14. Half-bull, half-man, he dwelt in a great labyrinth on the island of Crete. 18. This Greek monster had a lion’s body, a goat’s head on its back, and a snake for a tail. 21. T his riddling beast had a lion’s body and a woman’s head – she’s easy to spot in Giza.

Activity Of The Week

F

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Fourth of July Fireworks

ireworks on July 4th have been an American tradition for 234 years, since the first anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The outcome of the Revolutionary War was far from certain in 1777, but fireworks gave hope and a sense of patriotism to the citizens of the new nation. It’s easy to forget what a longshot independence was, and what radical ideas the declaration promoted. Few people in the world of 1776 thought all men were created equal, or that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were inalienable rights. The idea that rulers derived “their just powers from the consent of the governed” was treason, and punishment for treason was death. Those early Americans needed a boost of patriotism in the midst of war, and fireworks provided it, with the blessing of John Adams, who wrote that Independence Day should be marked with “illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other.” Fireworks have been making a joyful noise for thousands of years. They may have originated with green bamboo tossed onto

a fire in China – the resulting explosions were thought to scare away evil spirits. Soon, chemicals were added to enhance these explosions and fireworks marked most Chinese celebrations. Marco Polo brought the technology to Italy, and Italian pyrotechnicians added color. The Italians also began the tradition of setting the fireworks off

We have SO many ways you can get your feet wet.

on a barge – as Cape May does – so that the reflections on the water could enhance the entertainment while reducing the risk of fire. Cape May hasn’t always had its own fireworks display. Before Congress Hall sponsored it in 2004, the town hadn’t had an official display since 1988. Seven years has made it a tradition, and now the town lights up long before the first rocket is launched. Cap off your Fourth of July weekend with fireworks, even if the weather isn’t perfect. On July 3, watch the Lower Township Fireworks in North Cape May along the bay from Emerson Avenue to Lincoln Boulevard at 9pm. Come early for live music and rides. In Cape May, the fireworks will be on Monday, July 4 at 9pm near Congress Hall. Watch from the lawn if you enjoy being part of a patriotic crowd, or set up camp on a beach to create your own private party. Consider walking or taking your bike – the traffic leaving the fireworks can be a challenge. Come away with a renewed sense of patriotism, and a renewed connection to the colonists who changed the world. Next week: Kayaking in the Rain

This could be your view... Kayak tours daily at 11:00 am (until late June) for 2-3 hours

Dean is a good-looking, three-yearold Chow mix waiting for someone to rescue him. He has plenty of energy but due to that enthusiasm we recommend a home with children who are 10 years and up. Dean does just fine with other dogs but he has to be in a home where there aren’t any cats. Other than that he is a good boy who just needs a second chance. Could you be the second chance he needs? Adoption fee is $95.

«

Tiki is a one-year-old boy who has had a pretty tough life so far. He came to us covered with bite wounds which have since healed. While Tiki has lots of nervous energy, he’s very submissive and wants so much to please everyone he meets. He will need someone who will give him the exercise and training he will need to thrive. He would do best as an only pet where there are no small children. Adoption fee is $95.

«

Bono is a one-year-old Chow mix who has a great zest for life. He loves to play and would make an awesome companion. He will need some basic training but he seems more than willing to learn. Bono belongs in a home with older children because he does have the potential to knock over smaller children. If you think he could fit with your lifestyle please come meet him. You’ll be so happy you did! Adoption fee is $95.

Oreo is a black-and-white male kitten who is about six months old. Reach into the cage and drape him over your shoulder and you will hear his motor start – he’s a purring machine! He loves the company of other cats. He has never lived with dogs so we are not sure how that would go. He is very well socialized. Adoption fee is $70.

Sweetie is a female kitten, about six months old, and was given the name Sweetie because that’s just what she is. She’s extremely affectionate and she loves the company of other cats. She has never lived with dogs so we are not sure how that would go. She was surrendered to the shelter by a kind soul who loves cats. Adoption fee is $70.

Jeffrey is a very cool six-monthold guy who is as sweet as can be. He does well with other cats but hasn’t lived with dogs so were not sure how that would go. Jeffrey was surrendered to our shelter by a kind soul who loves cats but simply had too many. All he needs now is a second chance. Adoption fee is $70.

The Interns Are Taking Over advertisinG feature

W

e are getting ready to celebrate July 4th with fireworks and celebrations and the Second Stage is ready to bring our own fireworks with our Broadway Series of revered theatre artists. This special group of artists are “la creme de la creme” and your ticket admits you to a special after party at the Washington Inn and a complimentary signature drink. July brings Cape May Stage’s interns onto our stage in two different programs. Families will love Cape May Kids performing on July 5, 7, 9, 12, 14 and 16 at 10am. This is the story of a family vacationing in Cape May in the 1950s. The kids discover the newest high-tech device called a transistor radio, so they can hear music on the beach “without wires.” It is a funny, nostalgic look at our past that will have adults wipe a tear even as the children in the audience laugh. Late nights on Saturdays bring a very different program called Sure Thing with four short plays by David Ives that are funny and designed to appeal to audiences that stay up late on Saturdays. The plays start at 10:30pm after the main stage show. Both shows are really fun and the interns are talented actors from as far away as South Carolina and Louisiana. They have come to Cape May Stage to learn from our accomplished artists and share their talents in a beautiful venue. On Monday, July 18 one of Broadway’s brightest leading ladies comes to Cape May Stage with a new evening of cabaret. The Tonynominated and Emmy award-winning Liz Callaway brings her soaring vocals to Cape May Stage for an evening of Broadway, standards

Above: Flashback to 1950s Cape May in “Cape May Kids” – a timeless family story. Below: Liz Callaway, the voice of Disney’s Anastasia. and contemporary fare. Audiences around the world have raved about her versatility and talent. The New York Times gushes that Liz is “as incandescent as ever.” Liz Callaway appeared on Broadway in Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, Baby, Miss Saigon and Cats where she sang the hit song “Memory” over 1,500 times. She is also known for singing leading roles in Disney’s animated films and for the theme song in television’s The Nanny. She’ll be there to sign her new CD, “Passage of Time.” Call for tickets today to see one of Broadway’s timeless voices in the glorious Robert Shackleton Playhouse and don’t miss an unforgettable experience. Cape May Stage is offering three extraordinary ladies – Liz Callaway, Maureen McGovern and Tovah Feldshuh – for a special price of $150. Individual tickets are $75. It is rare to see these artists in such an intimate venue. Call 884-1341 or go online to capemaystage.com to order your tickets now.

Bird Droppings

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

I

f you are like most of those fortunate to live upon the shores of Cape May, you get a lot of attention from friends and relatives, some you even forgot you had, every summer. People who love you, even though you may not even like them, and who love your humble abode so conveniently located within steps of the Atlantic Ocean (even if it is a few blocks). You know who you are and you know what I’m talking about! Sure, you love having them; well, most of them; okay, maybe some of them. But after three or four days of baking on the beach, or wishing they had three or four days on the beach, it starts to wear a little thin. They're either too sunburned from the beach, or crazed with cabin fever because they can’t get a decent day on the beach. You’re getting tired of the sand they’re dragging in whether it’s dry or wet. They’re getting tired of doing the same thing, day after day. You start looking for alternatives, something to engage them and get them

out of your hair – and your house. How about a bird walk? How many seaside hotspots are sitting right on top of one of the planet’s greatest bird watching junctions? I can think of one other than here, but it’s a long way from Cape May. Try it. You, and they, might be surprised. It doesn’t take a whole lot; you don’t

Join/ friend us on

even need binoculars if you join one of the birding walks organized by the Cape May Bird Observatory – they’ve got free loaner binoculars available at every walk. Your guests might enjoy finding out that there is a difference between all those “seagulls” on the beach – Laughing Gulls, Herring Gulls, Ring-billed Gulls. They might enjoy being able to identify some of the birds on the walks. But they don’t have to know a darn thing about birds. That’s why the CMBO provides local leaders who not only know the birds of the region but delight in sharing them with people. There is no minimum or maximum age requirement; birding is an equal opportunity enticement. Nobody is ever too old or too young to appreciate birds. Okay, you do have to be somewhat ambulatory. After all, by definition a bird walk involves walking. But even people who have bum knees or health problems that cut into their mobility can enjoy birds with minimal (or no) walking involved.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 105 the Wildlife Viewing Platform (aka “The Hawkwatch”) at the Cape May Point State Park is equipped with ramps and nice benches and you can park yourself at the park and still see birds. And there are easily accessible boardwalk trails to boot. The CMBO does walks there, too. Now there’s good news and bad news about opening your guests' eyes to birding. Good news is, it will get them out of your hair for awhile and give them something else to do. In fact, there are walks every Saturday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday through the summer along with back bay boat and kayak trips. Bad news is, getting in touch with nature will give them something else that they’ll look forward to coming back to Cape May for. Sure, they’ll find birds anywhere but birds like you can find in Cape May? All year long? I don’t think so. That’s why Cape May is unique; but you already knew that – you live here. So when your visitors (and you) need a break, send them over to the Cape May Bird Observatory. Ask any of the staff or volunteers what walks are happening. They’ll be glad to

Try the Hawkwatch Platform for spectacular views show you and you’ll see why the Cape May Bird Observatory is THE place to come for all your nature needs – and not to be missed. The CMBO, located at 701 East Lake Drive overlooking Lake Lily in Cape May Point, (884-2736), is open every day

from 9:30am to 4:30pm except Tuesdays through August. While you're there, check out the view of the lake from the wide selection of scopes and binoculars, pick up a free map and schedule of daily walks and programs for the season, take a look at the sighting sheets to check what's being seen, scan the bookshelves or pick up a bargain from the used and vintage books section, look at some of the wonderful Charley Harper merchandise, including a terrific lithograph done just for the Cape May Bird Observatory, or just browse around. Sit outside on our garden benches and enjoy the birds at the feeders and the view of Lake Lily. If you can’t make it in person, visit us online at BirdCapeMay.org – where birding Cape May is only a click away! Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey's own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. Pete uses his talents and energy to make the natural world real for others. Author of several books on and about nature (available at the CMBO) he weaves information, insight and even fantasy into a net that captures minds and hearts. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

The Dating Column

I

Stella Dixon's take on romance on Old Cape Island

’ve always been wary of having a fling, which is unfortunate for my coworkers. Because all of them are attached, they live vicariously through me. They tell me to find a man – any man – and have a no-strings-attached good time. I should be dancing the horizontal tango every night – or at least every year. I should be living it up; this is, after all, what being single is all about. But I just can’t. It’s not that my moral compass points me in another direction (though I am the product of a Catholic school upbringing and all the accompanying guilt). It’s not that there aren’t any good men (I know there are plenty of them out there). It’s that I’m terrified of herpes. I once ran to my doctor in a panic because I convinced myself that a spider bite on my thigh was the symptom of an STD. I spent what felt like hours on the exam table, halfnaked, crying and wanting to bash my head against the ceramic reproductive system on the far wall. I’d heard one NPR program on the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases, and that was all it took. It's kind of like what happens when you buy a new car, only, instead

of seeing Volvo station wagons everywhere, I was seeing STDs. Even when my doctor convinces me that the only thing wrong with me is paranoia, and I make a vow to get back on the single-andready-to-mingle horse, I can’t seem to have a decent fling, even when I give it my all. My sister told me that, according to Millionaire Matchmaker, if you hold a man’s gaze for a full five seconds, he'll be so mesmerized he’ll have no choice but to approach you. On the advice

t ircraf A 26

of my coworkers, I figured I’d give it a go. At three different Cape May bars, I locked eyes with plenty of strapping young men. At first, I had a hard time holding for the full five seconds. I never realized just how long five seconds can be, especially if you spend them questioning whether your “come hither” look comes across more like “I’m constipated.” Each man turned away before the full five seconds, but not before giving me a whyare-you-staring-at-me look and tapping his buddy’s shoulder as if to say: are you seeing this? I’m pretty sure one guy thought I have some kind of disorder that doesn’t allow for blinking. I left each bar feeling demoralized. The bottom line is that some people are built for flinging. Not only do they enjoy all the no-strings-attached fun that comes along with being single, they’re good at finding it, too. I am not a flinger. Even when I can get past my own paranoia, I can’t send out a good-time vibe for the life of me. So I guess what I’m saying is this: If you’ve got any great swinging-single stories, feel free to drop me a line. My coworkers would sure love to hear them.

The Movie Column

H

Tom Sims, Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews "The Trip" and "Midnight in Paris"

ere is a twist: shameless self promotion at the beginning of the column! We hope you can join us this Friday, July 1, for our Film Camp free screening of student work. Joe Stinson and Stefan Prosky are in town to work their magic at this year’s camp, and the students are hard at work creating shorts that you’ll no doubt enjoy. Join us at 7pm at West Cape May Borough Hall on Friday. You know your summer isn’t complete until you’ve taken a road trip — on the big screen at least. The last road trip film I reviewed was 2010’s horrible Due Date. So I was relieved when a new film out of the UK, The Trip, was a much better, more consistently funny road trip movie. Steve Coogan and the lesser-known Rob Brydon (both from the UK) play their comic selves as two friends traveling through England on a food tour. Could the film have lasted about 20 minutes less? Listen, I’m glad when a real road trip only goes 20 minutes over. Most road trip films I’ve seen of late are a feature length too long! Coogan and Brydon bounce off each

Steve Coogan and Rob Bryden present a road-trip movie with real humor and style. other like only two well-connected comics could. Their interactions are priceless – mostly inane, off-the-cuff conversations captured at the heart of their intense silliness. Don’t look for a whole lot of poignancy

in this film – there's no powerful or moving conflict. In fact, there is little to no conflict. Still, there is a certain depth of character that keeps the dialogue to more than just the two of them being goofballs (although it is mostly that). So if you’re only in it for more than just a few laughs, it works. Midnight in Paris is the latest from accomplished director Woody Allen. Hey! Did I just see you roll your eyes? Well I’m glad I got my shameless self promotion in at the beginning because if you don’t respect Allen’s work you’re not going to see this movie anyway. In fact, you’ve probably stopped reading this review, right? Hello? If you do like a good Woody Allen movie, this one isn’t so bad (wow, did that sound as lame as I think it did?). Owen Wilson plays a fairly successful screenwriter who struggles as a novelist and is infatuated with legendary writers and artists of the past. One night, wandering the streets of Paris a little drunk, he is picked up by a cab and transported to a place where his legends become real. Sure the movie is a little too hokey at times (especially for Allen), but I’ve seen worse from the once icon.

he weather finally feels like summer and the town is becoming more and more crowded. Once again there were a total of five properties that changed hands during the past two weeks and for those of you interested in Cape May Point, we have one sale this time. So without any further delay let's see what has transpired over the last two weeks. It must be fishing season again, because we start off with a double hitter at 1307 Beach Unit #11 in the Morning Star which was listed and sold by Justin Aftanis of Cape May Realty for $415,000. (Make sure to wish him a happy 40th birthday. Sorry I wasn't there for the party, but then I wasn't invited...) Justin wasn't the only one who had both sides of a transaction: we next have 1488 Washington Street Unit #3 which was listed and sold by Todd DeSatnick of DeSatnick Real Estate for $475,000. Todd did have a little help with Ryan Griffin chipping in. We still have one more transaction with only one agent involved – 704 West Lake was listed and sold by Andy Moffatt

of Chris Clemans Sotheby's International Realty for $500,000. We had a commercial transaction in West Cape May at 106-108 Sunset Boulevard. What was formerly Vanthia's was listed by Ryan Griffin of DeSatnick Real Estate and sold by Todd DeSatnick for $575,000. Finally, 621 Columbia Avenue, better known as The Delsea, was listed by Carol Menz of Coastline Realty and sold by Ami Menz of Coastline Realty for $904,000. This week I would like to also take a minute to focus on rentals. Let me remind those of you who are on vacation that

before you leave, you have the opportunity to re-rent the same place you stayed in this year. As the tenant, most offices and owners allow you to reserve the property for the same week next season now for little or no immediate deposit. It amazes me every year how many tenants I have that either didn't know they had that option or just forgot. Then when they call in the fall or winter they're disappointed because the week has been rented to someone else. My advice to you is that if you think you want to come back to the same place next year, don't forget to reserve it before you leave. As always, if you have any questions about any of the properties in this edition or any general real estate questions feel free to contact me. Until next time, make sure to enjoy your time in Cape May for however long you may be here.
